BMW recalls various model year 2013-2018 vehicles with EGR issue

BMW of North America is recalling 50,404 of the following vehicles that come equipped with an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) module with an integrated cooler:

  • Model year 2013-2018 328d, 328d xDrive,
  • Model year 2014-2018 328d Sports Wagon, 328d xDrive Sports Wagon,
  • Model year 2014-2016 535d, 535d xDrive,
  • Model year 2015 740Ld xDrive,
  • Model year 2015-2017 X3 xDrive28d SAV, and
  • Model year2014-2017 X5 xDrive35d SAV diesel.

The EGR cooler may leak internally, causing coolant to mix with diesel engine soot. This could result in smoldering particles and a melting intake manifold.

A melting intake manifold increases the risk of a fire.

What to do

Dealers will replace the EGR cooler and inspect the intake manifold, replacing it -- as necessary -- free of charge.

Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on January 12, 2022.

Vehicles previously recalled in late 2018 for the same issue will need to have the new remedy performed for this recall.

BMW recalls X4 xDrive30i vehicles

BMW of North America is recalling 13 X4 xDrive30i vehicles.

The tire label may contain the wrong size and pressure information.

Incorrect tire size and pressure information could result in the wrong tires being installed, or improperly inflated tires, increasing the risk of a crash.

What to do

Dealers will replace the tire information label free of charge.

Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed October 11, 2021.

BMW recalls various model year 2019-2021 vehicles with braking issue

BMW of North America is recalling 50,024 model year 2020 M340i, M340i xDrive, 540i, 540i xDrive, X3 M40i, model year 2020-2021 X4 M40i, 745Le xDrive, model year 2019-2021 Z4 M40i, and model year 2020-2021 Toyota Supra vehicles.

During engine start, the engine management software may cause a loss of braking assist. Full mechanical braking (without assist) remains available.

Loss of braking assist can increase the risk of a crash.

What to do

Dealers will update the engine management software free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on October 1, 2021.

Fuel pump issue leads to BMW recall of xdrive vehicles

BMW of North America is recalling 11,216 model year 2014-2018 328d, 328d xDrive & X5 xDrive35d, model year 2014-2016 535d ,& 535d xDrive, model year 2015 740Ld xDrive, and model year 2015-2017 X3 xDrive28d vehicles.

The high-pressure fuel pump may fail and can cause an engine stall while the vehicle is being driven, increasing the risk of a crash.

A seat belt retractor that does not function as intended in a crash increases the risk of injury.

Dealers will inspect the seat belt retractors (including the seat belts) and -- if necessary -- replace the retractors free of charge.

BMW recalls Class X3 and X4 vehicles

BMW of North America is recalling 138 model year 2018-2019 X3 sDrive30i, X3 xDrive30i, X3 M40i and model year 2019 X4 xDrive30 and X4 M40i vehicles.

The front passenger seat occupant classification system may have been improperly assembled, which could result in the misclassification of the seat as unoccupied, and deactivate the front airbag.

A deactivated front airbag will not deploy in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

What to do

Dealers will replace the seat foam, which includes the occupant classification system, free of charge.

BMW recalls vehicles with Takata Non-Azide Driver airbag inflators

BMW of North America is recalling 4,511 of the following vehicles:

  • Model year 2000-2001 BMW 3 Series (323Ci, 325Ci, 328Ci and 330Ci),
  • Model year 1999-2001 323i, 328i, 330i, 330xi, and
  • Model year 2000 323i, 328i stationwagons.

All vehicles are equipped with Takata Non-Azide Driver airbag Inflators (NADI).

The inflators were inspected, but not replaced under previous recalls.

Due to a manufacturing issue, the NADI inflator may absorb moisture, causing it to explode, or the airbag cushion to underinflate.

An inflator explosion during airbag deployment could result in metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants. An underinflated airbag may not properly protect the occupant. Both situations increase the risk of serious injury or death.

What to do

Dealers will replace the driver-side airbag inflator with a newly designed inflator free of charge.

Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed July 19, 2021.

BMW recalls model year 2021 230i and M240i vehicles

BMW of North America is recalling two model year 2021 230i and M240i vehicles.

Supports within the roof liner may be insecurely attached.

As a result, the support may separate from the roof liner and fall into the passenger compartment, increasing the risk of injury during a crash necessitating the deployment of the head airbag.

What to do

Dealers will inspect and repair or replace the roof liner -- as necessary -- free of charge.

The inlet check valve weld may fail, allowing the filling pipe to separate from the fuel tank.

Fuel may leak through the failed weld, increasing the risk of a fire.

The head-thorax air bag may not deploy as intended in certain side-impact crashes.

An incorrectly deploying airbag can increase the risk of injury.

The remedy is currently being developed.

If the driver initiates an automatic closure of the sunroof, and the vehicle key status is changed to "off" or "lock," the sunroof may continue to close.

The sunroof continuing to close after the vehicle is shut off may pose a risk of injury.

The right front brake disc may have been assembled with incorrect fasteners, which over time, could result in the front brake disc becoming loose.

The output shafts (left/right) which transfer power from the driveshaft to the rear wheels may break due to a heat treatment error during supplier production.

A broken output shaft can lead to a loss of drive power or a rollaway condition in a parked vehicle (if the parking brake is not engaged), increasing the risk of a crash.
