PODS may be the best-known moving container company, but it isn’t the only option. The right PODS alternative depends on your moving distance, budget, storage needs and how much flexibility you want with loading, delivery and pickup dates. This guide compares the top alternatives to help you choose the right moving container company.

Key insights

U-Pack, 1-800-PACK-RAT, U-Haul U-Box and Zippy Shell offer comparable container services with varying sizes, materials and pricing models.

Jump to insight

U-Pack typically costs less for long-distance moves and serves all 50 states, while 1-800-PACK-RAT uses all-steel containers and U-Haul U-Box works best for smaller loads.

Hidden fees like delivery charges, fuel surcharges, redelivery costs and extended storage can significantly increase your total moving container price beyond the initial quote.

PODS alternatives for moving containers

PODS alternatives include:

  • U-Pack
  • 1-800-PACK-RAT
  • U-Haul U-Box
  • Zippy Shell

These companies offer portable containers you load yourself, then either store, ship or have picked up for local delivery. Before comparing brands, it helps to understand what a moving container is and how moving container sizes affect the number of containers you’ll need.

PODS and 1-800-PACK-RAT offer the closest size match to a PODS unit if you want an 8-foot, 12-foot or 16-foot container. U-Pack takes a different approach: Its ReloCube is smaller than a 16-foot container, but you can order multiple cubes, and its moving trailer option lets you pay only for the space you use. U-Haul U-Box works better for smaller loads, especially studio apartments, dorm moves or room-by-room storage, because each container holds less than a full-size 12-foot or 16-foot unit.

Materials also vary. 1-800-PACK-RAT describes its containers as all-steel and weatherproof, while U-Pack describes the ReloCube as metal and weatherproof. U-Haul’s U-Box uses a smaller container with a weather-resistant cover. Steel or metal containers may feel safer for heavier furniture, long storage periods or rougher weather, while smaller wood or composite-style containers can cost less and fit tighter driveways.

Storage is where the differences can get expensive. PODS and 1-800-PACK-RAT often appeal to people who want their container on-site, like in their driveway, for a while. U-Pack can store ReloCubes at one of its service centers, but it doesn’t work the same way as a long-term driveway storage setup. U-Haul U-Box charges by container, so a four-container move can multiply storage costs quickly. Zippy Shell makes sense if you want the company to pick up the container and store it indoors while you wait on closing dates, renovations or apartment availability.

PODS competitors for long-distance moves

For interstate or cross-country moves, start with U-Pack, 1-800-PACK-RAT or U-Haul U-Box. U-Pack is built for long-distance self-moves, while 1-800-PACK-RAT offers long-distance container moving and U-Haul can ship across town, country or internationally.

U-Pack ReloCube overview

U-Pack uses a “We Drive, You Save” model: You pack and load the container or trailer, and U-Pack drives your shipment to the new home. Its ReloCube is a metal, weatherproof container, and each cube holds about one large room of belongings.

U-Pack is often worth pricing for moves over 1,500 miles because it charges by the ReloCubes or the trailer space you use. Transit for most shipments averages four to six business days, and customers get three business days to load and three business days to unload. Estimates include the equipment, delivery, transportation and standard liability coverage. It has no deposit requirement, which can help if you’re trying to avoid a large upfront moving charge.

1-800-PACK-RAT overview

1-800-PACK-RAT is worth comparing if you want a PODS-style container for a long-distance move. It offers 8-foot, 12-foot and 16-foot all-steel, weatherproof containers, which gives it a closer size match to PODS than ReloCube or U-Box.

Long-distance moves include a no-cut security lock and $10,000 in content protection. You’ll want to verify payment timing during the quote process. Route, container size, storage time and location can affect the final terms.

U-Haul U-Box overview

U-Haul U-Box works best for small moves, partial household moves and flexible storage. Each container measures 8 feet by 5 feet by 7 feet. The container fits about a room and a half and has a 2,000-pound loading limit.

U-Box containers can be delivered to your home, loaded at a U-Haul location, shipped across the country or stored at a U-Haul facility. U-Haul also offers international U-Box shipping, with ocean transit. Ocean transit takes about five to eight weeks, depending on the origin and destination.

Best options for small loads

For a studio, dorm, one-bedroom apartment or partial household move, try U-Pack ReloCube or U-Haul U-Box. A ReloCube fits about one large room, while a U-Box fits about a room and a half with a 2,000-pound limit.

U-Pack may work better for a state-to-state move, where speed, transportation and no deposit matter. U-Haul U-Box is great for when you need a smaller container, extra loading time or international shipping.

PODS alternative pricing and hidden fees

Your cheapest quote isn’t always the cheapest move. Moving container prices can change once you add delivery, pickup, fuel, storage, redelivery, coverage and cancellation fees, so compare the full order total before you book.

Ask each company to confirm these charges in writing:

  • Delivery fee
  • Pickup fee
  • Fuel surcharge
  • Monthly storage rate
  • Redelivery fee
  • Contents protection or insurance
  • Cancellation fee
  • Accessorial charges, such as difficult parking

Quote type and deposit

The quote for a moving container doesn’t always cover the full move. Before booking, compare delivery, pickup, transportation, storage, coverage, cancellation and redelivery charges, then run the same move dates and ZIP codes through each company’s quote tool.

For example, PODS charges initial delivery and the first month of rent one day before delivery, then charges long-distance transportation seven days before transit begins and redelivery one day before service. U-Pack has no deposit, and payment occurs after it confirms how much space you used and your shipment is on its way. U-Haul U-Box payments are split into stages, so your card may be charged at reservation, delivery, shipping or storage depending on the order.

Pay by container vs. space used

PODS, 1-800-PACK-RAT and U-Haul U-Box price services around container use, storage time, delivery and transportation. That’s fine when you can fill most of the container, but costs can add up if you rent more space than you need.

U-Pack is good for a smaller long-distance load because it charges by the ReloCubes used or the trailer space used, with a 5-foot minimum on trailer moves. If you reserve more ReloCubes than you need, unused cubes are picked up without additional charges.

Storage time and monthly rates

Storage costs can add up quickly when a closing date moves or a rental isn’t ready. PODS’ monthly billing renews on the same day each month as the original delivery date, while 1-800-PACK-RAT includes 30 days of container use for long-distance moves. Long-term U-Box storage rates start at $74.95 per month per container, though the final rate depends on location and container count.

PODS alternatives for city parking issues

City moves come down to space, not just price. A full-size container may be cheaper on paper, but it will not help much if your building manager will not allow curb placement or the truck needs more room than your block can give.

Short containers and tight driveways

Smaller containers can make apartment and city moves easier. U-Haul’s U-Box is 8 feet long, 5 feet wide and 7 feet tall, while Zippy Shell’s commonly listed container is longer at 15 feet but narrower than many full-size moving containers.

Facility drop-off vs. curb delivery

Facility loading can be the better call if your street has no legal parking, your building has no loading zone or a delivery truck can’t fit. Curb delivery works better when you have a driveway, reserved spot or written building approval.

Permits and HOA restrictions

Check city, HOA and building rules before booking. Street placement may require a permit, and some apartments or HOAs limit how long a container can sit outside.

Is it cheaper to do a PODS container or U-Haul?

Are there other pod storage or moving companies besides PODS?

Yes. U-Pack, 1-800-PACK-RAT, U-Haul U-Box and Zippy Shell all offer portable moving or storage containers.

How do U-Pack and PODS compare for long-distance moves?
