The action alleges that subscribers who maintain multiple screen names on their AOL account have unknowingly had those screen names "spun-off" into individual separate accounts. AOL then automatically bills the subscriber's credit card or bank account the normal $23.90 monthly subscription fee for this spun-off account. Oftentimes it has taken months for subscribers to find the problem, because AOL has allegedly intentionally manipulated the billing cycle for the spun-off accounts in order to make it appear that the charges are for different billing cycles.

I have cancelled my account with AOL on February 15, 2009. They continued to take money out of my account. I have called the company several times. Their voicemail is conveniently set up to "not work, I do not understand your request" when you request to cancel or question your bill. When I called back and said I wanted to upgrade my service or ask about a new account,it miraculously found my account information. I have sent letters and nothing. I finalled called my credit card company and had them cancel the card and issue a new number. I am also faxing my cancellation form, again. I am quite sure reading about all of the credit collection efforts on the part of AOL that they will soon be pursuing me to get more money. I really think the president needs to step in and shut this company down, because obviously AOL could care less about any rulings the court has.

So today I received an overdue payment notification 103.60 from AOL. The payment was overdue 130 days claims AOL, yet the also claim the account hadn't been used since February of 2008. And that they had tried to notify me via the account's email address. We canceled the account, yet they claim we didn't. I've done some research and found that Im not the only one to have this problem. What I find odd is, if the account hadn't been used since early last year, and we certainly hadn't made any payment's since then, at least to my knowledge. And if payment's had been made, since my "successful attempt" at cancellation, then AOL has alot to deal with from me.

I order AOL as Internet Provider on April 2, 2009. I was told it was a "get free month, when you pay for one month." After the account was opened, I was told that that deal ended, and that I was not getting a free month of AOL. I purchased a prepaid Visa card for May 09 payment and the rep at AOL did not know how to enter the Visa number to receive payment. I called the bank that issued the card and AOL three times. The bank offered to help AOL with the billing but AOL would not contact the bank. The account was suspended on May 6, 2009.

I got another ISP "cable" for internet on that date and did not use AOL software after that date! They are billing me for May and June 09 even after I told them in May to cancel the account if they didn't know how to enter the Visa number in to get payment. AOL will not remove the $19.98 charge and their computer states I was using their system for the two months on Dial Up. I have proof I had Cable at the time and only used the free AOL email. I never used the Dial Up after they disconnected service on May 6, 2009! This is fraud! And the techs in India can't understand English outside of their AOL handbook!

I had set up my boyfriend an AOL account (**). A few years later (last year), I tried to cancel it because we got broadband and they wouldn't let me because I wasn't him. Well, not only did he not have the time to mess with it, he didn't know any of the information they kept asking. I did, but he was working 200 miles away from me. Anyway, so we decided to ride it out until the credit card expired. A month before it expired, I got online and switched from a paying account to a free account. Yet, after it expired, they still kept billing us and telling us to update our account information. So, again, we both called and canceled it.

For three months, they kept billing us $44. Yesterday, they billed us $59.80. I called today to try to pay the bill off to keep his credit good. Not only did they tell me it was $68 but the guy said the account was still active. I explained to him it should not be and all we been through. Then, he would not just accept payment. He wanted to put my card on the account so they could bill it monthly. I finally had to refuse to give him my account number and I hung up. I called my boyfriend and he called them. After hours of painstaking calls for him, too, and 8 people later, he finally told them we would mail a check for $59.80 and he wanted the account canceled. They offered him a free account and he said that is what they told us months ago so he didn't want anything, to cancel it all. I just checked and they still have not canceled it.

I called AOL to change my address and my phone number, and they told me that my monthly charge of $9.99 went up to $11.99 a month. I told them that without notice, I would not pay for that. I said I wanted to cancel my paying account after 15 years paying them and 90% are getting it free. I wanted to cancel, and they were trying to sell me all different plans. I kept saying cancel, but they kept on going, not hearing what I had to say. I hung up and called back, and they said, "Keep what you have, I will give it to you for $4.99." I said no and that I wanted to cancel and wanted free AOL mail. They finally said yes. I had to call them back four times.

    1) It was not cleared on their end for me to get into my mail. 2') I checked it, it was fine; and then an hour later, it didn't work again. 3) I called again. It was in India, not US. I could not get my mail. They told me they would fix it, and they did. And now, it's back to not working again. If you do not have a paying account, they will hang up on you.

I called AOL to cancel my internet account with them as I had another internet provider. I had been paying AOL $25.00 a month for the last ten years. The rep told me I could keep AOL for $11.00 a month. I told them I did want it. At this point, I was offered the service for $4.00 per month. Again, I turned them down. Finally, I was told that I could have the internet service free of charge. I was quite shocked at this. The rep told me that if I had gone to the account management page I would have seen that these options were available and have been since 2006. When I asked them why I was not informed that I could obtain a lower rate, I was told it was my responsibility to go and find this information. I asked for a refund of money but was denied. I pointed out that I never received a letter or an email regarding this. I feel that AOL has deliberately ripped me off and that I was paying what turns out to be an exorbitant fee for something that I could have had for much less for the past 3 years.

They canceled me as of July 2009. When I contacted someone through live help (I was hung up on when I tried to call), I was told that they can't cancel ahead. When I asked why I was not notified and advised, the question was ignored. I was also told that they could not reinstate me - I would have to begin paying again as though I was a new customer. I had America Online service for almost five years. The last year we had their service, it was extremely slow and had problems getting Web pages to come up. It timed out and couldn't access email most of the time either. I made several calls to AOL tech support and they would say it was my computer. Then, I would call Dell and they would run through stuff with me - in the end, it was the dial-up service.

We unfortunately live in the country and couldn't upgrade like they kept wanting me to, to DSL. It was not available. The last time I tried AOL, I believe they just increased their rate, didn't notify me, and just took out of bank account as this is how the account was set up. I tried to cancel then and they said it would be better if I would just go to Walmart and get a free copy of the latest version of AOL and call back. I did this as I was told that I had to do this before they could proceed with cancellation.

It still wasn't better so the guy transferred me to Customer Service. They to tried to get me to continue service and I told her I want it cancelled. After a long battle and her telling me a million times what a valued customer to AOL I've been, she said it would be cancelled. We started utilizing our Sprint air card that we had already got for our laptop for all computers in our household. I then cancelled my debit card and got a new one after I called and told them that I cancelled. They told me at that point that I was notified by email that they weren't able to properly complete cancellation. I told them how was I supposed to get my email when I cancelled the account and didn't know that to check that email and one reason for cancelling was we couldn't get online to check email.

So after a long conversation, they said that they will cancel. I told her I already cancelled so what other information did she need. She stated she needed my physical address. I gave it to her and she said there is now a better version of service so I should get a better service. I told her no, I already cancelled and I hung up. This was sometime late last year. I never heard from them again until yesterday, 07/28/09. I received a phone call from collection agency indicating I was placed in collections by AOL. I was very, very upset.

I told her I cancelled and, as always, had a hard time understanding the people due to language accent. They wanted me to give them another credit card number to pay. I told them no. I argued with them that I didn't owe and they said yes. I asked them for AOL's number and they said the account no longer belonged to AOL and they wouldn't talk to me. I asked if they could explain the charges and they said it was for unpaid service since December 2008. I said I wasn't paying for something I cancelled. They said if I cancelled, I would have a cancellation number.

I honestly don't remember getting such number, but since it had been sometime, I honestly don't remember. I tried contacting AOL twice yesterday and spoke to a supervisor. I got some same information and some different information, but all basically said that the cancellation didn't go through. They tried to contact me via email and that I owed this money. I asked why they didn't call me or mail me a bill. They said that when I signed up for AOL, I agreed to a clause that said they would only contact me via email.

I said that is absurd, that you couldn't call or mail anything, but you can give it to a collection agency to do that. They said that is what I agreed to. They also tried to tell me that I had sent an email and that "I" called them on 03/31/09 to request a free email account. That sent me through the roof. I never called them again, nor did I ever ask or even know that they offered a free email account.

We set up a free hotmail email for the family as we couldn't access emails regularly with AOL nor get Web pages to open timely or always. This is absolutely unbelievable! I am very frustrated after 2 phone calls to collection agency and 2 to AOL yesterday, 07/28/09. I don't feel I owe the money and am having a hard time and don't know where to go to do anything about it. I'm scared to give them another card to pay for it as they might say I signed up for service again. Please help.

Following several years of poor AOL internet service, the company's retention department in 2005 (then based in Albuquerque, NM) promised that if I remained with AOL, they would lower my monthly charge to $9.95 per month, and that it would never go up in return for my loyalty. This was reneged on by AOL about a year ago, but corrected when I called customer service in Virginia. However, on 6/23/09, AOL emailed to announce a rate hike to $11.99 per month effective 7/23/09 - with absolutely no acknowledgment of the prior agreement. When I tried calling the American customer service number, 703-265-1000, I was called back by a Mr. ** who could not have been more rude or threatening.

He admitted that AOL's Albuquerque, NM office had closed down and thus that he did not have access to any paper records. However, he claimed that AOL could not possibly have promised me such a guaranteed price - thus effectively calling me a liar - because he had never seen such a plan offered. I explained to him that it wasn't a plan per se, but rather a promise made by the customer retention department. Mr. ** then asked me if I had a tape recording of the cell phone conversation I had had with AOL's disbanded Albuquerque office in 2005 to prove they had offered me the $9.95 per month plan, to which I explained that that was absurd, as the average person does not normally record conversations with reputable businesses, nor should we have to. Moreover, if I was making the story up, how did AOL come to charge me $9.95 for most of the last 5 years?

I further explained to ** that even my original price of over $20 per month way back in 2000 was agreed to over the phone - not by any paper contract. He then became threatening, saying he could kick me off AOL if I didn't like the pricing, and that it was my responsibility to prove I had been promised the $9.95 per month pricing if I stayed with the company, an obvious impossibility, other than the fact the company had mysteriously implemented this price in 2005. I was then hung up on by ** , and have since left nearly a half-dozen messages on the so-called executive section help line through the number noted above with none of my calls returned.

Now today, July 11, 2009 I received a letter in the mail from AOL saying I owe them payment for the last 2 months. I called and talked with several people asking why I was still being charged and why it had not been canceled. The person I talked to had apparently never canceled the account, despite telling me the total opposite.

The customer service supervisor said they can see that I have not used my account in the 5 years or logged in even once, but they have no record of my canceling it, so there is nothing they can do about the balance on my account now. There is no record of it being canceled because whoever I talked to 4 years ago never actually canceled the account so there obviously would be no record of it. AOL is refusing to erase the balance and are threatening to turn it over to a collection agency if it is not paid in full, when it was clearly 100% their fault. Mr. **, a supervisor, told me there was nothing he could do and my partial payment would be refunded to me in a couple months. I asked to speak to someone else and he told me the managers don't take calls and he couldn't give me the names of the managers or the CEO who took my money out of my account. He stated he didn't even know the name of the person I had talked with in Customer Service.

I believe Mr. ** was acting like a manager and he was the person I talked to in Customer Service. Please, I need help. AOL is ripping people off and they're not even realizing it. I was told I could get the same service, they were charging me $30.90 for, for $11. What a joke! I live on a budget and they messed up my entire account. I'm so stressed out about this. I joined AOL in late September 2008. I needed dial-up for access while traveling. Because the service/connectivity/speed was so appalling (even for dial-up), I called up within ten days and canceled. I have never used the account since. Why would I? I thought it was canceled. On 5/28/09, I started getting repeated calls as shown on the caller ID from a number I did not recognize. They did not leave messages (nine calls in 2 days). I called that number back and got a heavily accented male (outsourced customer service, go AOL). I managed to figure out that he was trying to tell me that I owed AOL over $100 for 4 months of service. I promptly hung up and called AOL.

They have no record of my cancellation, saying instead that I called in February and switched to a free account; I did no such thing. The individual I spoke with (Raul? Aul?) was insistent that I called in February and still owed the money, and that I had never called to cancel before. He sounded like a broken record! They have sent me to collections over this. I have not used the service since late September. I will not pay them this money. I received no phone calls, no mail, nothing about this until the phone calls from the collection agency started 5/28.

I plan to file with the BBB in hopes that someone will do something about it. But based on the complaints I've seen about this very problem, I doubt it. I'm just grateful they didn't get the money since I had a compromised debit card in October and had to close it. It just happened to be the one I had told AOL to bill.

We cancelled our AOL account in June of 2008. We used my son's bank account. He is 17. We thought that the AOL account was closed. Today 5/27/2009 we discovered his account is overdrawn bt $65.83. AOL is charging us $65.83 a month for an account. They are charging us for 2 accounts so they are charging us over $130 a month for 2 accounts. The second account they opened without authorization is in my dead brothers name. He died on 5/23/1989. They charge $65.83 for his account.
Total the have overdrwn the account $653. First I called their customer service number that I had to get from Google because AOL does not post one. That person'sname was Christine. She said she could find no account for us. She said she needed our bank account number and routing number to find our account. I did not have the routing number so she gave me the fraud number saying they could find the account without the routing number. I called the fraud number. I spoke with Mark he said he could not find the account without the routing number. So Christine lied to us. Sound familiar? So I got the routing number from my bank and called fraud back and gave it to them. They told me that either the bank account number was wrong and I read it to Mark 2 times. Then he said the bank probably changed the account number and routing number without me knowing it. I was looking at my April 2009 statement and had just called the bank and got the routing number. I had the bank woman read the number back to me so I knew I had the right one. Now Mark told me that the bank had to call AOL to resolve this problem otherwise there would be no resolution. I have been reading on this website that this is the tactic they use with everyone. The new twist to tortre me with is using my dead brothers name to open an account then charge him $65.83. The really weird part is they are sending my dead brothers charges to my son's bank account. My son was not even born when my brother died. My son was born a full 3 years later. AOL is a totally evil LLC and I wish some lawyer would stand up for the rights of people like me. You see my brother was a Medical Doctor that caught HIV and died of AIDS. I miss him dearly and destroying his memory like this is causing me a very large amount of undue stress. If AOL is doing this to you let them know you know about their tactics.

Well about 9 years ago, we got our first computer so we tried the AOL 90-day free trial online deal and we were assured that no long distance charges would accrue. Well, there was & AOL took care of it, but gave us a lot of problems. Well around the 5th Jan., 2009, my children, knowing I am disabled, bought me a computer and told me to get online and have fun. So, ok, they got me the 30-day AOL free trial disc. I remembered what happened the last time we tried the online experience trial. So before I even thought about going online, I read the fine print and called AOL to make sure I would not be charged any charges whatsoever because I am disabled and only get a $687.00 social security check. So I asked the rep. 3 times, “Are you sure with these access numbers you helped me put in? Am I going to be charged?” 3 times he told me, no, so I said, “Are you sure?” He said, “If,” and I was to call 1-800-827-6364. So I said, “No, I want to make sure I am not going to be charged.” He said, “No, Mr. **, you won’t be charged.”

So I finished installing the software. Well it didn’t even stay on the full 30 days, I think 25 days at the most, and I get a $900.00 phone bill that next month. So we called them about it. They told us to send them a copy of the phone bill and they would take care of it but to call back in a few weeks and check. Well they said the board said, no, it was my problem now. Can you imagine how I feel? I’ve got heart problems now. In about 1 month, I am gonna be without a phone, (no 911) just because of AOL’s lies. Please help me! Well if I have a heart attack, I won’t have a phone. I live way back in the country and I’d probably die before my wife could get help. This is going to just mess our lives up bad. I mean, these people shouldn’t make promises they can’t keep. How will I call my doctor or them call me. I don’t know what to do.

I recently discovered that AOL was triple billing me (quadruple billed me in Feb. 09). They had initially declined my method of payment - a debit card. So I tried again. That, too, was turned down. As I was exiting the site, it allowed me to put the billing method on my phone, which I did. It later authorized the debit cards and began taking money out, twice. I was unaware I was being billed, because I received the bill on my phone bill. I opened a new account, had my billing transferred over, and just happened to catch the double charge on the account they had initially declined (and billing me on my phone). I tried to bring that to their attention and was told by Billing to call Frauds who told me to have my bank contact them, and my bank tried to recover the illegal withdrawals. But AOL refused any attempts to make it right.

I have full conversations with their representatives that show you what a runaround they give. They play stupid. They keep giving pre-pasted useless responses. This is fraud. Being an ex-cop, I knew by what they were doing (stonewalling) that this was a common practice. It is out and out theft. You know it. They know it. And I have the documentation from bank accounts to conversations I logged with them. I believe this is a common practice for them - declining methods of payment, forcing you to try other accounts, and then approving the ones declined so they can access it and fleece you. This is a crime. They figure that since it is petty theft, it’s OK. But they have exceeded the limits of petty theft on many occasions. Someone needs to be held accountable. Please advise for future recourse. I have all the documentation.

My husband, Mitch, called to cancel his $9.99 AOL monthly charge for email. The rep told him that the free email would not allow him to keep his existing email address. Mitch did not want to change that email address so he agreed to pay the small $2/month charge that the rep said it would cost to keep the same email address. My husband blindly paid monthly but the amount began to change each month going up to $14.95. Every month was different and we could not get a straight answer when we called customer service.

I contacted AOL customer service help desk at 0844 499 5555 to inform them of the changed card and to provide them with my new credit card information. The AOL helpdesk person informed me that the new credit card was in the system and my service would be restored within three days. I called back a week later in early March '09 because the service was still not working. I was then told by the AOL helpdesk person that they could not accept my United States Credit card (MasterCard from bank USAA). Neither the helpdesk person nor the helpdesk manager could make a US credit card work in their system.

I informed them that I had paid with a US credit card in the past 2.5 years. They actually questioned me on that, stating that it had to be a UK card. They did not have access to all the numbers on the card, just the last few, so they couldn't tell what country the card was from. At that point, I told them that since they are not providing service and since they can't or won't accept my US credit card, then the account is closed. Today, 6 May '09, I received a bill from Roxburghe collection agency informing me that I am required to pay my debt of 77.21 Pounds (about $130) to them to collect because AOL was not able to attain payment from me.

I explained to the AOL rep my concern. She proceeds to explain how I can easily change my plan for a paying account to a free account but I will lose technical support of the software. I explained to her that is fine as I never contacted their support before bc I only use AOL for email purposes. However I was concerned why I never heard of this. The AOL rep repeatedly explained how I can easily go to "change my plans" and I would see the free plan offering. I said that is great but how I would have known to check that feature if I didn't know it to begin with and therefore had no reason to change my plan. I asked how did AOL paying customers know about this free service and she only continued to repeat herself about the change my plan option. After I asked to speak to a supervisor, and she told me that the supervisor is only going to follow the same protocol as she. She puts me on hold and returns with another explanation.

The AOL representative explained to me that the CEO sent an email to all AOL subscribers explaining the change in payment plan. I do not recall receiving this email and asked that she email me a copy. She proceeded to explain to me that she cannot because it is an internal communication.

I too have been ripped off by AOL in trying to cancel the internet service.
I was an AOL internet subscriber for about 15 years and always paid my fees on time. Many years ago I went to annual service fee charged to my credit card in January/February. This year 1/24 an annual fee of $239 popped up on my credit card. I called the card company to dispute it and they put a hold on the charge. I tried calling AOL to cancel on 1/26/09 and they said they would and a cancellation notice was received. I thought that was the end of it. Two months later it showed up again on my credit without notice. I contacted the credit card company and they said AOL had sent in the "paperwork" documenting my responsibility to pay. I said that I had a cancellation notice and had not had the service for two months. The credit card company said to fax in the cancellation notice. I did but the $239 was never taken off. I paid the credit card bill and called AOL's "customer service" again. "Mike" the accented "supervisor" I talked to said he was "powerless" to refund any money even though I had a cancellation and essentially was not using the service for the year's worth of premiums I was paying ahead of time. He said the only thing he could do was to re-start my service which I did not want of course. I stated that no other service for which I pay simply charges me without notice ahead of time--no other utility etc. simply goes into my credit card account and charges me like that--none. He gave me this song and dance that I had been "notified" in September with the chance to cancel by October. I made two points to him: 1. The email notice was four months in advance (among many other emails) and no other utility does it so far in advance of a due date, where one would expect a later notice. 2. The purport of the email was that AOL annual subscription customers could change to a monthly fee. I did not want to change to a monthly fee; I wanted to use up my prepaid annual subscription and then when they notified me like any other utility about 4 weeks in advance, then I would cancel it.

Now they are billing me for a program that was never used. I did not register with AOL and I'm not interested. They are telling me that AOL account access has been suspended for non-payment. I never had even an access to AOL which was deleted in the first place. I protested the charge of $65.80 for an AOL account that I never had. My girlfriend and I have fairly good credit history and such a collection described above is not fair and correct. If I had access to use AOL in the first place, I would be willing to pay but my girlfriend and I have no AOL access at all. Please help me solve this problem because they have an account number assigned to my name to pay for a service that does not and never existed.

I am a member of AOL for almost 12 years with five email addresses, 3 for business and 2 for personal use. I have an estate liquidation business in Las Vegas, NV and have used ** for most of those 12 years, sending out 2-4 emails a month with newsletter with announcements of where the estate sale will be and what is going up for sale. A few years ago, AOL began enforcing a limit of 100 emails but if you called and got on their mass email list, you would be cleared to send out newsletters and such. Several times in the past, I have sent out my email and gone online thereafter and not been able to sign on to my account. I would call AOL, remind them I have permission to send them and they would update their data.

On April 21st, I sent out an email. On April 22nd, I could not sign on to my accounts. I called AOL and was told that I was blocked from all my accounts and that there was no one who I could speak to to clear up this matter. I was instructed to write a letter to the Communities Action Dept of AOL (CHAT). I went to a supervisor and was told the same thing. There were no telephone numbers and the only contact was by writing a letter. Please note that I have paid for the month. I was shut out not only on the emails that they feel was in violation but all of my emails. I cannot sign on to get the email addresses of my businesses to continue my business. I feel such exclusion is absolutely criminal.

I can't pay my upcoming bills because I was unable to communicate with my clients and my clients are going to think I didn't pay my bill. There could have been a way that I could gain access to an account that has been mine for 12 years and that I have paid for to get the information that I need to continue to do business, let alone contact friends to let them know. I've never known a company that you could not talk to someone about a problem. There is no access to the chat dept that controls who gets removed. In other words, I paid for a product and not only can't use it but can't talk to anyone about getting it to work again.

Account was opened in May 2003 for free 45 days. They billed $28.90 a month from July to December on the phone bill. This account was closed on October 13, ‘03. Another account was opened on Oct. 4 for 1,175 hours free which they claim was up on Oct. 7 (impossible, that totals 72 hours if I stayed on non-stop). They started billing my checking account on Nov. 2. Also, I received a lock out for non-payment of an old sub account from my friend’s account from 2001. I mailed a check received on Oct. 8, ‘03 for $23.80 after finding out what that was billed for.

Now, I'm fed up and wrote them a certified letter about the two accounts that they haven't closed (one real, the other bogus) even though this was my third request and I already had one confirmation number by phone. Also, I closed every other account they claimed I had by Dec. 19 and had not used any of their accounts since I opened a Walmart Connect account in Nov. ‘03 (not knowing they were owned by AOL).

Still, I am out $90.00 in NSF charges plus (phone bill) Nov. and Dec. ‘03 $57.80 since I actually got a confirmation # in Oct. for it plus $57.80 (for billing on the checking account) in Nov. and Dec. Also, the $23.90 paid in Sept. plus $28.90 for an old sub account. Total lost is $258.40.

I contacted America Online in 2001 and canceled my internet provider services with them via their 1 800 number. I had switched to broadband services with Verizon. The gentleman on the phone said I could keep my email accounts even if I did not use their dial up services. He made no mention of charges. Since AOL offers free email accounts like Hotmail does, that is exactly what I was led to believe I was doing. My wife informed me today that we have been getting charged $20.95 per month since 2001 for AOL services we have not used. When I notified AOL, they said the charges were normal and were charged whether we used their dial up services or not since they have no record of us ever canceling with them. They do, however, have records showing we have not used their dial up services since 2001 but cannot refund our money because it is not their policy. To add salt to the wound, he goes into a 20-min. sales pitch trying to sell me more products I do not need.

I am extremely upset. I feel like I have been taken advantage of. My children could have benefited from the extra money. They make it so difficult to cancel and when you think you do, they pull the bait and switch. They use a play on words to take advantage. I feel like they went into one of my bank accounts that I hardly use and stole $2000. They should be made to send out monthly bills so people are not taken advantage of. It may not sound like a lot of money to some people but it has put considerable strain on my marriage. That money was being saved for our child's future. We always paid loyally when we used their services and to get treated like this makes you wonder why our great country that I faithfully served is in the mess that it is in today.

I'll be married 6 years in may. they continued taking out 32.98 so my oldest sister called them(cause my mom doesn't understand all the talk), said that they would cancel it, not to worry. Two months go by, and charges pop up again, so my other sister calls to cancel it. Tell them what has happened. They say sorry, no problem. We get no cancellation number or anything, and when asked about it, they say that it's fine, everything's been taken care of. here we are almost six years later, and they're being charged again! My parents have never checked their bank statements on a regular basis, and when they do, it's to check to see if the house came through, vehicle, etc. no little charges or anything. My mom got to looking the other day and noticed the AOL charge. got what bank statements she could find, after they moved and looked at them. Eight months of bank staements and counting so far with aol charges. My mom calls them and they give her the run around saying they've received no cancellation, so I get on the phone the next day and call them. They try to give me the run around, but it doesn't work. I told them how long we've been without service, and who called to cancel previously. They tell me that that's not possible, because only the account holder can cancel. I told them that that wasn't my problem, because my sister's clearly stated who they were at the time and why they were calling and on who's behalf that they were calling for. I told them that it was their mistake on their end, if they went ahead and told us that they had cancelled the account and everything was taken care of. I was so mad. I told them that I wanted that money back into the account and that they were not authorized to take out anymore payments. I had them put a supervisor on the phone cause I was getting some answers. She claimed that without a cancellation number they couldn't confirm the date of cancellation and the only number I had was from the day before when my mom called and chewed their butts out. I told her that that wasn't right because my sisters had called five years ago and canceled it, and THEY didn't give us any cancellation number! She told me that I had to write a letter to some place with my claim, and proof. I'M NOT STOPPING CAUSE THIS IS CRAP!! People don't have the money, especially now, to be getting ripped off!!

Then they want me to fax my credit card information to them. I do not trust faxing private information like that out for anyone to pick up. They will not quit billing me. They said maybe someone was committing fraud. The only ones that could be doing that would be them. AOL is the one reaping the benefits every month.

Signed up and used it for about 2 weeks and then didnt renew my subscription as i as not needing it anymore. Few months ago (Nov 2008)i had my Debit card compromised and had it closed. After a review of my bank statements i noticed an Charge of $25.00 every month going all the way back to the year of 2004. For one i NEVER signed any letter authorizing AOL to make a withdraw. Since i was leaving on business when i found this out i would call them when i returned. Well after i returned my parents call me to tell me that AOL was looking for me. They didnt tell them where i was as they didnt know why they would call them there. After that i called them and one lady kinda laughed when i told her what was going on then she told me oh sorry you need to call the billing department and didnt bother to help me out or nothing!! After looking at all my statements it seems they want 2 months of service after i closed my Debitcard. I would have to say they OWE me 4 YEARS of service i never used!!! Anyone got any idea's or someone i can talk with about this situation???? Any help would be helpful on this matter. Anyone know ANY Attorneys who are seeking action with AOL. I have paid my bill monthly by credit card. Saturday, I got a past due bill for the long unused screen name from AOL and demanding I send them $25.00 to clear up the problem. I then received bills for 25.90 a month with which the back paid. For the past two years AOL has been debiting my credit card $25.90 AOL TWX Services. I did not catch the monthly fee until December 08. They would not look at my account when I told them to check the usage hours and activity of my account which I told them had been cancelled in April of 2007. They told me that I could indeed cancell the account with a confirmation number and told me to please use the service for the month of December as it had already been debited. I told them that did not make any sense to me as I did not have an active account with their services. Today I received a bill from AOL services stating I owed for the last three billing cycles for $77.90. They had already taken those payments from my credit cards statements. I called the AOL service number on the billing statement. They said I had to mail copies of the statements to prove they had been paid. I hung up on them and told them they were frauds and scamers.

I ask them to help me reconcile this and the operator would not let me speak to anyone else. I do not have the original agreement nor passwords to even logon and cancel it online. The payment is taken directly from the church bank account which is no longer active and they said we would still be billed for the service until they speak to the original person for cancellation. They said that the bill would likely go to collections if payment is unable to be paid. I asked could I send information to them that shows that I am the authorizer of all of the churches financial matters including accounts payable and banking and the operator said no.

Then we discovered they couldn't provide us with a local dial-up number in our area I tried to cancel. They wouldn't speak to me because it was billed to my husbands debit card. He called and they wouldn't speak to him because he wasn't the member. We finally got through and they said it was cancelled. That was in March of 2008. They continued billing us for 25.90 per month, knowing they could not provided us the local access number for 10 months even after we cancelled!!! We filed a fraud claim with our bank and cancelled the debit card they were billing. On 01/22/09 I received a bill from them for 25.90. I called them. They said they have no record of us cancelling. They only have record of a non-member calling for some unknown reason in March of 2008. They stated they would cancel but that I had to pay the 25.90 or they would turn it over to collections. They tried to intimidate me into giving them another card number over the phone to pay them. Finally one of there managers admitted that they were billing me for membership services that they knew they could not provide but that it was just too bad and that there was nothing I could do about it but pay or get sent to collections. They know what they're doing. It's fraud plain and simple. They know whether or not they can provide services but they con people and then take them for a ride.

The customer service reprentative sent to me a document to cancel my services, once again for the second time. She further stated that AOL could only reimburse me for so many months going back as to their error of billing and debiting my account. I followed through and sent back the letter authorizing them to cancel this account which was as of that date illegal and not authorize by me. As of today's date January 21, 2009 this account which is "fraud" is still being debiting from my account. Lastly, my telephone as of this date Janu21, 2009 to AOL lead to two employees attempting to pose as "superiors" as I had request. The gentleman stated that the superior was busy and unavailable., and left me on hold for more that 45 minutes. My next call was answered by a young female, who came back to me boldly pretending to be a superior even though I expose her, by explaining I recognize her voice. In a child like asian accent, she actually believed that she had fooled me into thinking she was indeed a different person and superior. After to confront her, she began creating noise on her mouth piece to scramble conversation's clarity. Upon this behavior, I decided to end the call.

When I asked to speak with the supervisor he said he had no discretion to forgive the outstanding debt because I could not provide him with a confirmation number re my request to terminate over two years ago. I later learned that same day on another attempt to contact aol, this time their billing department, that the confirmation number that the billing department at AOL uses when members call in with various concerns is the same as his or her account number, something Mr. Johnson surely was aware of when he mislead me about AOL not being able to verify that my request to terminate ever had been made. Mr. Johnson then left me on hold for the billing department where I eventually spoke with Harris who similarly avoided addressing the wrongful billing to an account that had clearly no online activity for years. When I requested to speak with his supervisor, he put me on hold again for a prolonged period of time after which I discovered I had been connected to technical support rather than his billing department supervisor, clearly another attempt to avoid responsibility. After hours on the phone including another billing department phone call that went to India to a Ramesh I fiunally learned that I would have to provide a written complaint, that the softwear of the various departments couldn't go back prior to 6-20-08.
