I contacted AOL, Suji on October 11, 2008 to cancel one of my accounts two accounts, and change the remaining to the $11.99 plan with unlimited usage. They continued to bill me for the cancelled plan, and changed the remaining account to a usage based plan which added additional charges of $35.00 in usage. I was not given credit to the cancellation date which they continued to bill on the Nov. and Dec. bills. I called again on 12/02/08 and 12/31/08. They have double billed me in the past and refused to credit my account. I believe they should be penalized and my monies refunded. Thanks. Ruined my credit rating and was billed a $15.00 Late Payment Fee by my credit card.

In July of 2008, we changed our billing amount for AOL from 24.95 to 9.99 per month. This amount is automatically paid through our Citi Visa card. During the transition from the larger amount to the smaller amount, AOL doubled our payment. We are now being dunned by a collection agency saying that we must pay the 25 dollar amount. We do not owe the money and would like AOL to rescind the amount they turned over the collection agency.

I was promised a refund of $18.99 to my Visa debit card for charges taken out of my account prematurely. I did receive that refund but I was also told that I would receive a refund of the $35.00 NSF charge on my account because of the overdraft this first charge caused. All I was to do was to fax proof of the overdraft charge which I did do. I was told that yes this would be refunded to me. I received an email telling me the information was received and the credit would be made. But now they say they are not going to Refund that charge.

AOL offers free and chargeable email service. I have been an AOL customer for over 10 years and recently discovered that they offered a free email service. Since I did not use all the features of the chargeable service I wanted to switch to a free email account. I attempted several times online to cancel my account but I no longer have the original information that I used to open the account. Without that original information, AOL customer service has informed me that I am unable to close my account or cancel my payment. When I asked to speak with a higher level supervisor (after being on the phone for over 20 minutes with the representative) there was no one available for me to speak with and rather was told to contact my bank to get the information they required. AOL basically receive $11.99 per month from me for a service I neither use or want. I have provided other information that clearly identifies me as the account holder and have requested to provide any other means to identify who I am to cancel they account they have been unwilling to assist me.

I have been getting charged for over 2 years for an AOL account that was cancelled and that I cannot use (screen name cancelled). 9/07 I reported this and was advised that I would be getting a credit for the monthly charges that were taken out of my account. I waited and did not receive the refund. I called and was disconnected... imagine that! I now have called again and was advised that they would cancel the account today but that they were not authorized to refund my money (25.90) which they admitted they have been collecting for years. I also have a current account that I pay 9.90 for. My question is this: Can they do that and do I have recourse to make them refund the money on the account that is not active and has not been for three years? Please help....

This relates to an AOL account belonging to my wife. Well over a year ago, she cancelled her AOL account. Apparently, they continued to charge our bank for services that she neither wanted nor used. Now, because the bank card used to charge the fees was lost and the card number changed, AOL is claiming that we owe them for the last 3 months at least, even though the account, to the best of our knowledge, was closed. AOL has reported us to a collection agency for the recovery of what they are charging us. At $20.00 a month for over a year (probably closer to 2 years), AOL has collected easily $300.00 in funds that they were not entitled to.

For the month of Oct. 08, they have charged me twice. Both in the amount of $25.90. I only have one membership. Why are they charging me twice a month? I have called about 6 times trying to get a refund. Today, October 2, 2009, I was told since I cancelled on the start of my billing cycle the 8th, I would be charged for the month of September. According to AOL, if you don't cancel on the right date, you have to pay for a month's service. What kind of business practice is that? Also, the service rep. tried to get me to stay with AOL for $11.99. Despite lawsuits and fines, AOL continues to make cancelling very difficult.

I called AOL on August 6th or 7th to cancel my account because there was supposed to be a 90 day free trial but, I was billed after only 2 months. The woman I spoke with assured me that the account was closed and that I owed nothing, several times I asked her if she was sure everything was taken care of and her answer was yes. I was given two confirmation numbers, one for the account being closed and the other comfirming I owed them nothing. Because of them trying to get a payment early, the money was not in my wifes account therefor she was charged $25.00 insuficient fund fee by the bank.
Even after the account was supposidly closed and I owed them nothing, they again tried to get money out of my wifes account on 8/12/08,8/25/08 & 9/3/08 . The bank charged a nonsufficient funds fee of $35.00 for each of these attempts. As of 9/29/08 my wifes checking account is $133.62 cents overdrawn because of AOL.com. I feel that it is their mess up, they should have to fix it.

I called to cancel my membership with AOL in March 2008. I had a very difficult time getting thru all the automated lines, but was finally able to speak with an actual person after 20 minutes. Unfortunately, her accent was very difficult to follow and I had to repeatedly ask her to repeat her questions. I could hear her hitting computer keys, and naturally assumed the information was completed and she assured me the cancellation was complete.
I received a notice that they were unable to process payment, but I had changed my method of payment, just before cancellation due to a lost card and explained that to the female I spoke with and that was partially why I was cancelling. Now, however, they have turned it over to a collection agency for more than $39 and it is on my credit report as a deliquent account. It is not deliquent if it was cancelled. I am now applying for a loan and this needs some resolution.
I could of course just pay the darn thing, it's just the principle of the matter. I've emailed them to no avail, in fact the collection letter I got came shortly after the email. I have tried to call their 888 # but again, the wait of going thru their automation, I finally just hung up, feeling it would be useless, since in all probability would just be another foreign speaking person, who I wouldn't be able to understand or who would be able to understand me.
Why should I have to pay for the inadequancy of their staff? Could you give me some direction in how to handle this matter? Thank you in advance for any assistance you can in this matter. Now on my credit report.

On September 11, 2008, I was informed by a relative that they had had AOL e-mail as a free service. I have been a long standing, loyal customer with AOL for 9 years and 8 months, paying $25.90 a month. When I spoke to a consultant at the AOL call center (Michael) explaining the situation, he simply replied that AOL does not send a courtesy letter or email disclosing this free option to their loyal customers or to any of their customers for that matter. Making me completely unaware of this free service. He also did not have a good enough reason as to why AOL conducts business in this sort of ill manner. When I pressed Michael on how long AOL has been offering this free service for, he stated maybe 1 year and then replied he was not sure.
At this point, I asked for a refund up to the time when AOL started offering free email. As a customer I was not given an opportunity to choose from 1 or the other option. AOL made the decision for me. I would have been delighted to know that AOL has a free email service and that it would have saved me a little over $300.00 a year. I currently have wireless at my home and only wanted to check my mail on a daily basis. Other than that, I do not use AOL for anything else.
When I said this, Michael flipantley expressed that he nor anyone else in his building could authorize a refund or help me. He placed no urgency on my situation what so ever. I then asked for the number to AOL Corporate. Micheal replied that he did not know the number and refused to provide it to me. I asked Michael to put a supervisor on the phone and Michael said the floor manager would not be able to help me, but would gladly get them. Michael hung up on me. I quickly found the AOL Corporate number and found no luck speaking with anyone. When I was transferred to an operator, they were just as insensitive to my needs transferring me as fast as they could without listening to whom I needed to speak with. I was even cut off before I could briefly explain the situation.
As a longstanding customer with AOL Incorporated paying on time every month for the last 9 years and 8 months at $25.90 a month, $3,004.40 all together. I merely asked for a simple refund for the monies owed to me since the time AOL brought out this free service. I was not asking for much. As a great, loyal customer I can not believe how poorly I have been treated with no consideration for the simple fact that I have paid all these years for a service I could now get for free. As a business professional and someone who has to uphold to a clean and honest reputation, I'm appauled by the behavior of this organization. This to me is just bad business. They have lost me as a customer for life.

On september 2008 I noticed the double billing and contacted the supervisor at aol--Alvin in which he acknowledged that account had never been accessed. The reference number for that conversation is 1030737542 and I spoke with Alvin employee number (26572) who would not divulge his last name.
I waited over 90 minutes to speak with a supervisor who stated the company policy was to only reimburse for the last 90 days. So in essence for 2-1/2 years I was paying for a service I never received.
$23.90 monthly from February 2006-September 2008 approximately $715.

I used my credit card several years ago to set up a AOL internet account for my daughter and grand children. My daughter moved and no longer had access to her computer. I found out the account had not been accessed for well over a year. I was upset with my daughter because I was being billed for a service that was not being used. I tried to contact AOL to discontinue the service and I kept running into dead ends. I don't know the user name or password for the account. I went online and I found many others were having simular problems. I finally found a number to call but after being on hold for a half hour I gave up in frustration. I went to my bank and explained my situation. My bank agreed to stop payment on that account.
On March 20, 2008, I received a urgent bill from AOL for $25.90. I was threatened with collections if I didn't pay. This was the only correspondence I ever received from AOL in all these years. On March 30, 2008 I sent response. On April 07, 2008 I called a customer rep. I asked why AOL made it so difficult to discontinue their service and I was told it was for the customers security. I wanted to know if the issue was resolved. I was told to put my issue in writing and send it to the address I was given. I told him that had been done. I was told I would be contacted in two or three weeks with an answer.
I never heard back from AOL, however, on August 8, 2008 I received a collection letter from Alliedinterstate demanding payment. AOL is far from being consumer friendly and they are unfair. I paid them for many, many months while not using their service. Now they want to beat me up for $25.90. Please help. Thank You

When I first set-up service for internet I was having trouble with my current service due to weather and no service and not realizing what was going on I signed up with [AOL]. After a week with special free service for 90 days trial, I cancelled the service around June 25th, 2008 and also emailed a second time and had to call again a few days ago. Furthermore, [they] have debit my account twice on a free trial service for $25.90 x 2 = $51.80. This is an unauthorized transaction and should not have happened.
When I emailed and phoned the first two times I thought the matter was settled and threw away the reference number given, but I should not have to go through this poor customer service. Please credit my account for the monies due.

My wife and I cancelled our AOL back in the Spring of 2004. I noticed this week that they were still charging my account and that they increased the amount that they were charging me from $3.95 a month to $9.99 a month. We have not used the service since then and had a terrible time trying to cancel our account again over the phone which they (AOL) of course said we never cancelled.
These unauthorized charges and increases are theft. We have been trying to pay off our credit cards and the theft of several hundred dollars of my money and the additional credit card interest on that money is an offense to me. I plan to inform my credit card company that my card has been fraudulently charged by AOL.

One year later I have received a bill from their collection department stating that I owed them for four months of service. I questioned why they feel it is ok to continue to charge someone for additional monthly service when it is obvious the customer doesn't know that the account exists since the first bill wasn't paid. Also, there are no transactions on the account so it was clear I wasn't using it. Most other businesses would value their reputation and never adopt this policy. The account would be placed on hold.
I told the rep I would paid the bill but I wanted a guarantee that account would be cancelled as I have heard that they have a bad reputation with this. I refused to pay by phone and asked for their address to mail a check. I am now hesitating with this as I have this feeling they will open up the door for additional charges since their cancellation process is not obvious. What should I do?

Several years ago I paid both AOL and Comcast but AOL made their email service free. Last week I sent an email out to my partners (150) which I have been doing for ten years. Some did not receive the emails as they were returned Mailer Daemon. I called AOL Technical Department who assured me it was Comcast, Yahoo, MSN, Hotmail, Juno, etc.
Upon calling them each and everyone said it was AOL who blocked sending them having blacklisted me as a Spammer. When I called AOL back I reached someone in the billing department who had the IQ of a flea. She said unless I paid her $11.99 she could not put me back through to technical even though she saw the note that I was to call them back if the problem was not resolved which it isn't.
I asked her to put her supervisor on the phone and she refused to do so. She then poured oil on the fire when she said what do you want for free. That was it as I exploded. Is it any wonder that AOL is going out of business. They want us to use their Email service that they made free but treat their loyal customers as if we were garbage. I finally have had enough.
Blacklisted by my own email provider as a spammer when I have never sent a piece of spam in my life. My business partners are unable to correspond with me via email. Thank AOL.

For years we have been grossly over-billed by AOL for dial-up service, although we had switched to high-speed access about 3 years previous. At no time were we ever notified, directly and in a clear manner, of the price differential in that the dial-up plan has been $25.90 per month versus the lower rate of $11.99/month for high-speed. Certainly not made aware in any reasonable manner that any normal person would accept as reasonable notice. Expecting us to go to a web site to discover this rate differential, would assume that we even knew of the pricing practice in advance.
I never recall receiving any sort of notice explaining this type of pricing structure. Neither does my mother who shares this account and has been paying for the service. Clearly, if we had, we would have had the sense to request an immediate adjustment rather than over pay for a service that has not been used for years. I am outraged by the service terms that enable a company to charge fees for a service that should have been adjusted years ago.
Assuming consumer knowledge of pricing practices assumes that we were educated and made aware. That never occurred. We have paid at least $500.00 in overages over a period of 3 years, with no way of knowing that there was such an extreme price differential. Clearly we would like some sort of consideration made in response to this matter.

He called AOL and spoke to someone and said he wanted to cancel his part (using the disc) because he was not going to be in the states. He was told it was cancelled. Unknowingly to him, AOL did not cancel his service.
After our son realized what was happening, he called AOL and was told that if it had been cancelled they would have sent a letter to him as well as it would be noted in the computer. He asked for them to send a copy of the letter that they said they sent (which he did not receive). He was then told they knew nothing of a letter nor was it in the computer as being cancelled. Another thing I do not understand is how can AOL charge both my husband and I as well as our son for the same service on the same phone number. Our son who is a veteran was fighting a war during this time. Our son was being charged $30.00 and we were charged $16.95 for the same service.
Our son's bank account was being charged by AOL $30.00 a month for 2 years. That equals to $720.00 they took out of his account. This cost him to have insufficient funds which in turn cost him alot more that the $720.00 he had already lost. He also had to pay for anything that had bounced as well as all NSF fees.

Fastforward to May 2007. I usually notice an automatic payment to AOL on my bank account at the end of the month. In may I noticed one on May 7. I assumed they were just late in taking the money out of my account. On May 28, another $25.90 was taken out of my account. Another on June 9 and again on June 30. Checking back as far as my checking account online would show, AOL has been double billing me at least since March 2008.
I called AOL and spoke with Jane. She acknowledged I had called in December 2006 but had no record of me cancelling the second account. She said she would cancel the account. She refused to do anything about the double billing. At my request she refered me to the floor supervisor, John, who said as well, they could do nothing to help me. I contacted my bank and was advised that the only way to stop AOL from taking money out of my account was to cancel the card and have it reissued.
Since my bank statement is available only to March 2008, I can only say for sure, I have had $103.60 taken from my account. However it is most likely that AOL has taken $466.20 from my checking account for a closed account.

I was told that AOL does not give refunds... and then i surfed the web only to find that COUNTLESS NUMBERS HAVE BEEN VICTIMIZED BY AOL - FOR SUCH FRAUDULANT BUSINESS PRACTICES OF DOUBLE BILLING. They owe me from Mar2006 up to June2008
i have Heart failure - and Lung Disease.. with High blood Pressure.. I'm confined to my home- and am in need of Oxygen - the aggravation that a company like AOL has been getting away with this for many many years only made me even sicker. I want my money back- WITH INTEREST and want to see them penalized under the scrutiny of an unbiased watchdog!

I signed up for a 90 day risk free trial on May 18 2008. I had trouble signing up for it and had to do it again. Come to find out AOL signed me up twice, and began charging me immediately. I was billed for 2 months, twice before I caught it. I called them on Jun 28 2008 to cancel and they refused any credit.
Although I havent had a large economic impact yet, I was advised from AMEX that AOL is infamous for these tactics. They will try to keep billing me if I dont keep on them. Also, after I cancelled I found out that AOL has litterally hundreds of thousands of complaints against them for their schemes.

I was an American Online subscriber and cancelled my account in March 2006. In August 2006 AOL contacted me with free offers, and I turned them down, since I was using NetZero for internet service. They charged my credit card $1 (credit check) in August 2006 and kept my account open anyway. No monthly charges were incurred until March of 2008 and April 2008 was not charged, then I was charged in May of 2008.
I do not have or use their service. I did not authorize this. They fraudulently charged my credit card out of the blue almost 2 years after cancelling their service. I think this is very bad business etiquette, and consider it a crime to be able to charge my credit card without my knowledge or so much as a phone call to solicite their product.

I have been a member of AOL since 1995. Last year I became unemployed and my credit cards maxed out. I contacted AOL and they allowed me to prepay my account which I have been doing, usually two months at a time. In May 2008 I sent a money order for $55 to be applied to my account which would be more than enough to cover June and July. On June 2, I received an email from AOL stating that they received my payment. On June 25, when I tried to log into AOL, I received a message stating that I must provide a new credit card and that I had a balance due of $24.90. Using a friend's computer I was able to get AOL help desk, as I always have trouble with their customer service on the phone. I was helped by somone name MHI HAIDS who claimed that my payment of $55.00 was received on June 2. My payment was due on June 1, so I was LATE for my June payment.
So therefore the payment was applied to July and August and I still owe for June and cannot access AOL until I pay the $24.30 for June. They are giving me no way to pay that but by credit card which I do not have. Have you ever heard of anything like this. They have $55 of my money but will not use that to credit my June bill as it arrived June 2.
So they have my $55.00 but I cannot access AOL until I give them a credit card to cover for June. WHen they acknowledged my payment on June 2, they never told me it was being applied to July and August. Please help me. It is easiest to contact me by e-mail I can access my AOL email through my friend's computer and I have been doing that daily for the past few days.
This company is demanding another $24.30 before I can access my account and yet they are holding a credit for $55.00. I do not have a permanent full time job and I try to pay AOL at least two months at a time when I have the money. I have always sent the money in at least ten days before it was due. And even so, I am not able to get into my AOL account from my home computer. To get my AOL email, I must go to my friend's computer and log in through the internet explorer. Since I am seeking employment, this is quite a hardship.

American Online charged me for internet service that I didn't use. I signed up for a Free trial offer to test my new laptop's online capability and used the service once. Since the speed was so slow I signed up for an online account with my local cable provider. AOL then proceeded to charge my credit card for three charges after the Free trial period expired.
I put a stop on the charges and AOL filed my account with a collection agency-Allied Interstate-and a representative named Scott Murphy harrassed me over the phone for payment. I was unaware of the Free trial conditions that he stated that I was responsible for whether I used AOL or not. I finally had to pay the charges just to alleviate the harrassament from Allied Interstate and AOL. If these conditions were made clear upon registration, I never would have signed up for AOL.
Even though I used their service one tine only, I still had to pay three charges that amounted to about $80.

AOL has been trying to extort money from customers by using devious tactics. I switched from pay to free service. Everything was fine and then I needed a CD for 9.0 upgrade which I had asked for while still a paying member. They told me I had to take out a contract for service in order to get the CD and it didn't matter that I had requested it while still a paying member. So I took out a month of service and then cancelled before the due date.
My AOL service was frozen and in order to have it restored I had to get back the membership in for technical support. They also deleted all my information in my file cabinet. I now have the tech support service and am terrified to cancel again for fear of what else they might do to force me into giving them $10 a month. I don't need this service. I have AOL through Road Runner and get free tech support there. AOL is saying they are free but when you try to use them, they force you to buy a $10 a month tech support contract or they will stop you from using them..this is illegal. I don't know where to turn to but I bet I am not the only victim here.
$10 a month, loss of time, lose of valuable information and I am sure I am not the only one.

I purchased a new computer in approx Oct 2007 and downloaded an AOL Free Download Trial. I attempted to use their service, but it was very slow, so I cancelled it shortly after and signed up with Insight to have Broadband, which I still currently have.
However, apparently my Free 6 month trial was up in May and they never cancelled my service as requested and have no record of my call. What a surprise? However, they refuse to refund these draft fees b/c they say I never cancelled. The only thing they would do was to give me the address and fax number to complain to. What can I do about this?

Again in May of this year we contacted AOL to cancel the account and we wanted a refund for each and every month the account was not accessed. Aol states the account was accessed as of 04 March 2007, Which is nonsense as neither my wife or I had the account screenname or password, It was the last time we tried to cancel it, at which time AOL accessed it. We have filed a complaint thru the Better Business Bureau and at this time have the account closed 'Hopefully' AOL thought that 68.40 was fair compensation, Which is what they stated in the 2 reponses they have sent to the BBB, No further compensation is warranted, the exact words.
I am writing this after receiving the second response i received from AOL thru the BBB, I have filed a complaint thru the Federal Trade Commission also, I think that one was a waste of typing, I had requested a log of session activity from AOL, They want a notarized request that states the request, 'which waives any and all rights to claims and compensation I may have as a result of AOL releasing such information' My question is, Is there a Class Action Suit being started against AOL?
