State Farm renters insurance coverage

While your landlord is responsible for insuring your physical apartment, they aren’t liable for any damage to your personal belongings. It's crucial to make sure you're covered by a good renters insurance policy to ensure you have security in the event of a disaster. State Farm's renters insurance offers financial protection by providing comprehensive coverage for your personal belongings.

Most of State Farm’s renters insurance policies cover:

  • Fire or smoke damage to your personal belongings
  • Damage or loss caused by people from theft, burglary, vandalism or vehicle accidents

State Farm's renters insurance policies might not cover:

  • Damage caused by natural flooding or surface water
  • Business or professional services provided from home
  • Motor vehicles, including boats, aircraft or cars

To find out what renters insurance policy is right for you, start by approximating the value of your belongings. You can work with your local State Farm agent to decide on the coverage you need based on your personal assets.

How much does State Farm renters insurance cost?

The price of your State Farm renters insurance policy depends on the information you provide when getting a quote, but a policy with $30,000 in personal property coverage costs about $12 a month. You also have the option to add on or adjust your plan by adding different types of coverage to your policy, including:

  • Personal liability coverage
  • Loss of use coverage
  • Inflation coverage
  • Medical payments to others coverage
  • Losses not insured coverage
  • Personal property coverage

State Farm’s renters insurance policies offer a standard $100,000 in liability coverage. Some landlords require tenants to have a specific minimum for liability coverage, so read your rental agreement or talk to your landlord before choosing a plan.

After over 25 years with State Farm. We were in the process of settling our Roof claim when informed that our policy was being terminated due to too many claims. 2021 plumbing claim, 2022 Roof to House and 2025 Roof to detached Garage Apartment. 3 claims in 25 years and because of this third claim that is still not completed or resolved we were cancelled. We have had (4) policies in the past that were rental property and never had an issue with State Farm that ALL go back to 1986. Is there some assistance in helping finish and settling our claim or do State Farm get away with not paying this claim.

Warning: It does not benefit you to purchase additional products/services as State Farm will find reason to deny your claim. This comes from following a phone call I received from Home and Fire Claim Services regarding the denial of my renters insurance claim for personal property damage.

I have been a loyal policyholder, paying for renters insurance consistently for the past 14 years. It is both distressing and unacceptable to learn that my recent claim has been denied on the grounds that the damage to my property, which resulted from the actions of my neighbors where they chose to use their bedroom as a makeshift lavatory in which the soil leaked into my unit causing tons of damage and State Farm has denied my claim. What is the purpose of renters insurance? You now tell me I have to read 34 pages of approved coverage but when you signed me up for the policy, you ensured me that any damage caused within my unit would be covered ie; smoke, water, theft, electrical, and any other damage. Your information was deceiving, misleading, and left this customer highly disappointed.

My apartment was flooded, and State Farm denied my claim because the flooding caused mold. They would only cover my belongings if they were simply wet, offering to pay for drying them. I suggest not relying on State Farm; their service is terrible.

I would avoid State Farm Renter's insurance at all cost. My insurance adjuster would not send someone to take a look at my apartment to assess what happened (a leak from a different apartment that flooded mine). He led me believe I would be covered with temporary accommodations while my apartment's entire floor was redone + being treated for mold. Instead, he manufactured a narrative that frankly did not happen, lied about what my policy included (said mold coverage was not included but it did) so that he could promptly deny my claim.

It took me months to finally get him kicked off my case, I wrote, called and chatted 5+ times. I also suffered an medical emergency, requiring surgery and was unable to keep pursuing an opened case. On top of that, the managing office that gave me my policy did not want to send me details. I could write in more detail but this particular adjuster was unprofessional and incompetent.

I had water damage in my home from my fridge. I made a claim over a month ago. They never call you back. I have to call. Leave five messages just to get a call back then put in my claim on items that was damaged and only paid me out half of what I submitted and still can’t get a call back. They care more about their deductible than they do about your items.

They charged us about $400 per month for full coverage car insurance. Today, we had flat tires and we requested towing through State Farm roadside service. We waited more than 3 hours and nobody came for towing! When I call my State Farm agent to ask, it is another service, I don't know why they delayed, I can transfer you to roadside service!!!! It was the answer, they charged us $400 per month, and one time that we needed their service, we got zero services!!! Just avoid this company, THEY GET YOUR MONEY WITHOUT ANY SERVICES!!

Bottomline is this!!! How much are they making, and that's it. When the final agreement has been signed, count on never hearing a word back from your agent or adjuster ever again! Way to go State Farm!! You lead by great example. You must be so so so proud of all you have accomplished. Keep it up. Friend.

Renters insurance is SUPER simple through State Farm. Full disclosure, I worked for a State Farm when I started my policy, but I don't work for them anymore (but I kept the insurance). I had never had renter's before my agent (then boss) explained it to me, and now I recommend it to everyone renting, especially because it can be so affordable! I personally haven't had to file a claim, but I know personal friends who have and it has totally come through for them. Additionally, when we moved a couple months ago it was insanely easy to update our address and not have any lapse in coverage. And the State Farm app makes it super easy to monitor and make payments as well! Highly recommend!

I had State Farm's renter's Insurance for many years, for protection of my personal property, not ever thinking that I would ever have to use it. Unfortunately one morning my daughter woke up after I had left for work to an electrical outlet fire in her bedroom. I'm so very grateful that the smoke detectors were in good working order, and that the FDD got to her in a timely manner. My daughter's life was spared which was most important, but afterwards we had to deal with the damage that was done emotionally and physically. State Farm made the claims process easy and it was done in such a timely and professional manner. Within less than 1 month I received a check to cover the damaged personal property. I highly recommend State Farm Renter's Insurance. Also the monthly payments are very affordable. It's better to need it and have it, than to not have it but need it.

Mother passed away August 2020, on 9/2/20 I called Dane **'s office to inform him. Spoke with someone named Jeff, he said he will cancel policy and send a check for $95.80 in her name. I recently received a renewal bill for her renters ins., called and spoke with Dane. His response was "her policy is still in effect, I can only go back 30 days for a refund, and I don't know who Jeff is". He finally agreed if I provide him with a Death Certificate and Lease Termination he'll look further into it. Worst customer service and less empathy. I haven't heard that State Farm has to file bankruptcy..

Why only ONE star. I received an email stating I was being dropped from my renter’s insurance through State Farm. Currently I have multi-discount because of car and renter’s insurance being covered through State Farm. I was shocked to hear I was being dropped. Prior to State Farm we were with Progressive for 15 years. We changed from progressive to State Farm because we moved from one state to another and got a better price quote.

Jan 2020 My car was vandalized along with three other vehicles parked in a row and stuff were taken from my vehicle. It was my first time filing a claim. Prior to this incident I’ve never filed a claim. Good payment history, good driving record and no prior incidents before. I spoke with a underwriter and it was explained to me the reason from the dropped because the ASSUMPTION that it could happened again and it was a new policy. I still have my car insurance through them but no longer my renter’s insurance or multi-discount. I felt as if I was dropped because I filed a claim. There were no history of multiples claims…. Only ONE. I’m Just disappointed in State Farm and don’t look at the company the same anymore. You can’t predict what’s going to happen in the future but getting dropped after filing one claim really sucks.

I have had renters, auto and supplemental health coverage with State Farm for almost 20 years. In 2015 I made a claim due to water damage in my apartment that State Farm paid out $2169.93. I had fire in the same apartment in August 2018 that State Farm paid out $0. I moved from that apartment into a house and received notice from State Farm that they would not be issuing the new policy due to those 2 claims. Again one of the claims State Farm paid out NOTHING!!! Now State Farm has had my payment on time every month for almost 20 years and this is all the it takes to consider me unworthy of their services. Don't bother with State Farm Renters insurance or any other services. I will be taking all my business elsewhere.

I have been a State Farm customer for over 10 years. The end of February my home was burglarized. I put in a claim through my renters insurance for items that were stolen from me. State farm has been a nightmare since. They sent an adjuster to my home who took pictures of my belongings. He interrogated me at my own dining room table with a tape recorder. Will ask you about your income, how much rent you pay, do you receive any assistance, do I work, basically telling me that since I'm black that I shouldn't be able to afford to have these items. But never asked me how I could afford to pay this high state farm bill every month!! I sent state farm many receipts of my items.

After the interrogation was over. He proceeded to take more pictures of my place but never took any pictures of where I said the entry was made to break in. I waited and waited for a phone call. Never heard anything so I called the adjuster back who told me they dont believe my story and they are scheduling an EUO. Examination under oath. Okay fine I go to euo that was about 45 mins from where I lived. WOW statefarm will take y from u through hell and back. He did the same thing as the adjuster in my home. I sat through a 5 hour interrogation with a lawyer hired by statefarm who told me flat out, "Why do you need so many clothes for what purpose? You dont go anywhere." Never asked me to bring proof of my income to the euo. Or the 2 times my lawyer sued state farm and got settlements for me. Or any tax refund information that I brought and had to explain that's how I could afford it.

Their euo lawyer will call you after the interview and try to get you to drop your claim. He asked me was I still going to pursue. I said yes. After I fully cooperated it took months for them to deny my claim claiming fraud and misrepresentation. Doesn't matter how long you have been a loyal customer to state farm if they feel you cant afford certain items or you shouldn't have certain things and you dont fit the profile. Your claim will be denied. After I received a denial through via email I immediately called the claim team manager and asked my was my claim denied. He told me for fraud so I said, "Can you be more specific than that," and I got a "Read your policy" response. I then said, "So I dont have a policy with statefarm anymore?" He said, "No your policy is still active"....WHAT! If state farm is accusing me of fraud why do I still have an active policy. They have acted in bad faith with trying to settle with me. And I will get my story out there to whoever will listen.
