What is Root Insurance?

Root is a web-based insurance company that offers auto, homeowners and renters insurance. Its car insurance requires new policyholders to download an app and track their driving habits for 30 days. This data is then used along with traditional factors to determine their rates.

By using this model, Root only insures drivers who meet its safety threshold and claims the average driver can save upward of $900 a year.

Root Insurance car insurance coverage

Root’s car insurance policies are customizable, but drivers are required to meet the minimum levels of liability coverage set by their state. This typically includes coverage for bodily injury, property damage and medical expenses.

Root covers most major makes and models of cars, but doesn’t cover motorcycles, ATVs, commercial or exotic vehicles.

Root Insurance car insurance quotes and rates

Root Insurance uses an app that tracks your driving habits for 30 days to help determine your eligibility and rate. It also looks at traditional factors like credit score, driving record, age, marital status, gender, ZIP code and vehicle type.

There are two ways to get a quote from Root:

  1. Test drive: Download the Root app, drive for around 30 days, then receive a quote based on the collected data.
  2. Instant quote: Click on the “Get a Quote” link on the company’s website and complete the online application. Instant quotes can insure you for up to 60 days, but you have to complete the 30-day test drive within this window.

After your test is complete, you’ll be sent an updated rate offer or be notified that your coverage won’t be continued if you don’t meet Root’s safety standards.

Policy options:

  • “Basic”: Fulfills your state’s minimum liability requirements and may include:
    • Bodily injury
    • Property damage
    • Uninsured/underinsured motorist bodily injury
    • Personal injury protection (PIP) or medical payments (MedPay)
  • “Fantastic” (full coverage) includes all of the above and:
    • Collision
    • Comprehensive
    • Option to add property damage for uninsured motorists

You can choose to pay month to month, or in full for a six-month term, which reduces your total premium by around 18%.

Root Insurance FAQ

Does Root Insurance offer classic car coverage?

No, Root doesn’t offer classic car insurance.

Does Root Insurance have a safe driver discount?

Among other factors, Root looks at your past driving record to determine your rate, and safer drivers receive lower premiums. Additionally, safe drivers can also earn lower rates by completing Root’s 30-day test drive.

Does Root Insurance offer full coverage car insurance?

Yes, Root offers full coverage car insurance that includes bodily injury, property damage, collision and comprehensive coverage.

Where is Root Insurance available?

Root Insurance is available in 35 states plus Washington D.C. Coverage is currently not available in:

  • Alaska
  • Hawaii
  • Idaho
  • Maine
  • Massachusetts
  • Michigan
  • New Hampshire
  • New Jersey
  • New York
  • North Carolina
  • Rhode Island
  • South Dakota
  • Vermont
  • Washington
  • Wyoming

Is Root Insurance good car insurance?

Because Root requires all drivers to complete a 30-day test drive, only those who meet its safety threshold will be insured, making it a good option for those who don’t drive a lot or who already practice safe driving habits.

Additionally, its policies are customizable and can be managed entirely online. However, if you know you’re a higher-risk driver or are afraid you may get a low score on the test drive, Root may not be the best option for you.

    Refunds & Payouts

    Reviewed Dec. 27, 2025

ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE COMPANY. They would not refund me the money they should have claiming there were "fees". Do yourself a favor and don't ever sign up with them. I will make it my mission to let others know that they steal from consumers unless they give me the rest of my money back.

On November 27th, 2025, I hit a deer coming home from work. Deputy Layne ** from Clay County police department came to the scene. I filed my claim with Root Insurance as I was sitting in my vehicle, awaiting the officer. On the 28th I called root, to be informed that my claims adjuster was not in office. Over the next several days, I continued to contact root insurance's claim department regarding my claim, never to be put in touch with my claims adjuster. I left her countless voicemails, I called many times, I emailed her to only receive automated responses.

I am at my wit's end and canceled my insurance policy with them, going with progressive. However, the claim is still active. I received a notice stating "your vehicle is currently located at a storage location," etc, etc. This is not true. My vehicle was never inspected or picked up. The company scheduling the pickup has reached out, however, in my policy it states I am due a rental in the event of my vehicle being wrecked, my claims adjuster never provided the rental nor did she succeed in contacting me so I did not hand over my keys to this 3rd party transport without actually speaking with a claims adjuster first.

The 3rd party transport agency was more than understanding and advised me to reach out to you because this is now ongoing 30 days and they are threatening to cancel my claim. At first, I had reached out to root many times and simply got the runaround by their claims department. When I would ask for a supervisor, I would be informed "there is not one available to speak to you".

Today, November 22, 2025 I called once again to address this notice I received about my vehicle's location and after having a complete hissy and refusing to give ANY information to the claims customer service rep, she finally got me a supervisor who informed me that the original personal handling the claim was no longer my claims rep. I was never notified of this change. This new claims rep has never reached out to me or tried to contact me and once again, root did not put me through to her voicemail or anything. I had to track down her information through another source, and she did not answer her phone.

My old insurance claims rep name was Katelyn **. My new claims rep is Hannah **. I have had root for a few years, and every time I need roadside assistance, they have fell short of their contractual duties. They often tell me "Just call them yourself, pay for it out of pocket and we will reimburse you." Well, they never do reimburse me, so I refuse to pay for a rental out of pocket. I might add this vehicle is still financed.

I think a fair resolution would be one of two things- 1- They repair my vehicle for free, no deductible paid as Root insurance, and I had a contractual agreement that they would provide me with full coverage insurance, roadside assistance and rental coverage. 2- They reimburse me the entire amount I have paid them over the last year ($1552.00) plus the hours I have missed at work over this issue. Due to me being in corrections, a grossly understaffed profession, my coworker's lives are in danger when I do not show up to work and I cannot get hard earned time off BACK. That total is $782.00, bringing the grand total to $2334.00.

It's one of the worst customer service experiences I've ever had. This company is really unprofessional; none of them are on the same sheet of music, and they consistently give incorrect information. I detest it. You have been warned not to purchase auto insurance from a company that just wants your money.

Well, insurance seems to be practical and more cheaper than most in price but coverage is good. They seem to be in my budget, the last time I had them pretty much that’s the only experience I got, I give it a thumbs up.
