I had this company for 4 years. I had no claims and they received all premiums on time. Recently they informed me that I had to perform their due diligence for them by sending pictures of certain parts of our house. Our house is 22 years old and is over 3,000 square feet. Upon receipt of the pictures, they informed me that they were not going to renew our policy because we had a palm tree too close to the house and our water heater was too old (original -- 22 years). They did not indicate what I could do to rectify the situation.
When I asked them if removing the tree and replacing the water heater (which is working perfectly) would allow them to reinstate the policy, they said they would then further review the pictures. They still wanted an opening to cancel -- probably because we are in California and they want out. (We are nowhere near a wildfire area). I was able to get a policy from another company without any difficulty as our property is low risk. Lemonade has proven to be an unreliable company and should be avoided.

Lemonade was the worst insurance I have ever had. A Lemonade rep called us a few years ago and convinced us to leave Allstate by showing us how much money we would save. I made a huge mistake by not hanging up on them (the only time I ever spoke w/ a Lemonade rep on the phone)! Allstate was top-notch and always went above and beyond when needed during our 10+ years with them. Lemonade promised to save us a ton of money and we reluctantly left Allstate for Lemonade. We did not realize the extent that Allstate made us feel secure and protected until we left them. Lemonade disappointed us from Day 1!
1 - You can never just call Lemonade. You need to email them and wait for a written response.
2 - We had water damage about a year into our new policy. They sent out an adjuster, who emailed us to say that Lemonade would not cover the damage because it didn't meet their terms. Lemonade's determination was quick and final and left us paying for the damage that homeowner's insurance should have covered. In addition, the whole procedure was cold and uncompassionate.
3 - Lemonade unexpectedly emailed us last week to inform us that we needed to hire an inspector or promptly send pictures of our home's interior and exterior or they'd drop us. To avoid hiring an inspector, we took our own photos. Lemonade then emailed us to say that we'd be dropped if we didn't also take pictures of the top of the roof. My elderly husband had to climb out a window and onto the roof to take pictures for Lemonade. They received the photos and then emailed us that they are dropping us because there is a tree that's too close to our house. I was so surprised by all of this that I felt that someone was joking with us. I looked again at my roof pictures because they show no trees on my property!
4 - After all this, I called Allstate and they stated that they no longer write policies in our area! I never thought I could miss a homeowner's insurance company. I will definitely look at more than just dollars next time I choose insurance!

Filed a claim for a loss under whole home insurance and it was handled promptly and proficiently. Staff was friendly and helpful and kept me informed. I had to replace my AC and the insurance covered the whole amount minus my deductible. I was so pleased I told all my friends that they should get this very affordable insurance for their home too.

Absolute scam for renters insurance. Had a slab leak last month, denied because the drinking water was leaking in foundation & never came above ground, due to us keeping water off most of the time. Plumbers had to repipe house, so no water for 4 days. Lemonade said too bad, we don’t cover it! Worst experience with Insurance I’ve ever had in almost 30 years of paying!! Paid for premiums for almost 7 years! Buyer Beware!! It’s a SCAM!!

Had a policy for 3 years, no claims. Then had a underwriting review on the house. Took 3 emails to explain to the "underwriter" what an HVAC was and I had no other heat source. Kids had a sign next to their play house that said horse. I was literally asked if I had a horse in my backyard. It took forever to explain the breaker box for my 1985 house. I had texted 1 year before to ask if they depreciated the roof replacement. The underwriter asked me to photo the "repairs done" since a claim was filed. I asked her to give the info on this claim I filed (which I never did, there was NO repair done). She was baffled and asked why I told them I had a claim.
I left Lemonade stat. Can't imagine the IQ of the children I would deal with if I actually had a claim. What a mistake I made signing with them and THANKFULLY, I had no claims to file with them. They did used a lot of emojis in their response emails. I suppose that is a positive thing today? To me, it doesn't belong in business correspondence.

This Insurance company is a joke. I've been with them for over 5 years and when I needed to file a claim for my roof last year, they were real quick to deny the claim. They made sure that my damages was under the cost of my deductible. I also had a fire claim that they denied also last year. When they sent an inspector to my home to do an inspection, all he did was take pictures and didn't even take samples. Claim denied again. I had to hire an attorney and claim was overturned and they paid the claim out. And made sure to low ball me with a ridiculous amount of $1200 that didn't even covered the cost to clean up my attic.
I had filed a claim again on my roof with different damages. And this time they were claiming that it overlapped with the previous claim regarding my roof and once again denied. So that being said, all they want to do is collect payments from their customers. But don't want to pay out claims that are filed if you need assistance. I cancelled my policy with them cause I'm sick and tired of these shady companies taking advantage of people.

Lemonade renewed a policy, without my consent. Took a whole years payment for a new contract. Sent my bank account into overdraft. Called them to see why they charged me for a policy that I didn’t want? Told me that they would cancel it immediately, and issued me a prorated refund. Which I should’ve been refunded for the full amount. I went to the bank the refund was issued, but pending. Bank told me it should post after midnight. The next day, checked bank account, and the whole refund had disappeared. Contacted Lemonade, and was informed they issued refund. Gave it another day to show back up. Still not showing up in my account. Went by the bank again. Bank informed me Lemonade took back the refund.
Called Lemonade again. Representative was extremely rude that I spoke to, and told me to wait 3-5 business days to see if it shows back up. Rudely hung up in my face. Had to issue a claim with the bank. This whole process has been a nightmare! Now this whole situation is under investigation by the bank. Do Not Use Lemonade Insurance!

I recently had a frustrating encounter with Lemonade's home insurance policy process. Despite providing receipts and photos confirming that my roof was replaced in 2019, Lemonade denied coverage based on cosmetic discoloration, which has no impact on the roof's functionality. This experience has led me to question Lemonade's policies further. It appears that Lemonade may accept new homes for insurance policies for the first term, only to end coverage later to avoid liabilities or payouts for older homes. I find Lemonade's approach disappointing and unfair. It seems they prioritize avoiding payouts over providing genuine coverage and support to their customers. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend Lemonade for home insurance and urge others to carefully consider their options before choosing Lemonade.

I went with Lemonade because I used them for Renter's insurance. When I bought a house I stuck with them. I liked the ease of getting a quote. The app based quote system was fast and easy. Not being bombarded with emails after filling info out online. However, after a year and a half they stated they needed an inspection report to renew me. I gave them my inspection report, and they asked about the "leaking sinks". I told them the p traps leaked on several sinks because they weren't tight. I tightened them all an 1/8 turn and have had 0 issues. You know how the inspection reports go. Then they asked about the "possible leak" the inspector noted due to a water stain on the ceiling tile. I told them there was no leak, and that the HVAC ductwork is a couple inches above it, not a single water line or appliance in the area. Then they were like "what about your water heater, was that replaced? Can you send us the invoice?"
I informed them the water heater works completely fine and I've never had an issue so I did not replace it. Then they said that unfortunately they cannot renew my insurance because my water heater is too old and is at risk for leaks. I thought this was funny because it's code that your floor is pitched towards the floor drain. Not to mention you have a better chance of a leak with a new water heater than an old one. My parents ironically called me that same day to say their water heater is leaking, and it's their 2nd one in 8 years. My inspector had said he wouldn't replace the water heater if he were me because he had to replace 3 within the last 15 years.
My realtor said she replaced 2 in the last 15 years. Both agreed they don't make them to last anymore. Every major concern in my house is less than 5 years old. New shingles, new siding, new furnace, new AC, new windows, no foundation issues, overall it's in AMAZING shape. Yet they dropped me because my water heater is over 15 years old. I've had almost no issues with the home and have never made a claim on any type of insurance. I would not recommend if you have an older home because I felt as if they were looking for an excuse to drop me.

I was a Lemonade customer from June 2020 to June 2023, during which time I submitted no claims. I made an inquiry once as to whether it would be beneficial to file a claim after a large tree limb fell from our neighbor’s property during an ice storm onto our roof, damaging the gutter and fascia board. The cost for replacement was less than a thousand dollars over our deductible and I was concerned if a subsequent rate increase would be detrimental in the long run. In short, I found their largely AI operated system less than helpful, and their human representatives not much better. Earlier this year I was informed by Lemonade that they were redoing the underwriting for my policy and asked me to provide pictures and proofs of repair/replacement for a laundry list of common claim items (roof, electrical panel, plumbing, etc.).
Ultimately they decided to not renew our policy because our home still has some galvanized piping. Why this wasn’t an issue when I originally signed with Lemonade I can only surmise. My basic impression of the company is that it is structurally designed to maximize profit. All business is conducted online, and again is primarily AI driven, keeping the human element to a bare minimum. The ease of signing and relatively low rates initially makes them attractive, but as for a “Big heart”…I don’t believe they have that. Don’t be fooled by the whimsical name and cute graphic design, because behind it lay a cold profit-driven machine. I am thankful, however, that they provided ample time for me to find another insurer. Since then I’ve gone with a local company that knows the neighborhood and am very happy.

We had Lemonade for our previous house that we sold (homeowners insurance). And for our current apartment (renters insurance). When we bought a townhouse (condo insurance) and Lemonade required us to submit a building inspection report. Said that they would be unable to insure because the electrical panel was not meeting code, and the home had galvanized steel pipes. We got them replaced with new electrical panel and PEX pipes, and submitted documentation and receipts. Guess what, they threw us another list of deficiencies that must be repaired before insuring. Half of them were acceptable reasons and another half was perplexing and questionable, especially that the damage were merely cosmetic.
We got a hold of our building inspector, and he stated that they were only cosmetic damages in which repairs would be optional. Asked Lemonade to contact the inspector to verify, but they insisted that those cosmetic damages to be repaired (which is basically a fresh paint over ceiling stains, and resanding and refinishing a floor that had superficial water damage. No warping or rot whatsoever). Our experience with Lemonade with our previous house - none of those had happened as we just switched providers. No questions asked. But with the townhouse we just bought, it was a complete 180 degree shift that left bad taste in our mouths even though we had been their customers for more than 2 years. No longer can recommend them.

It is a deceiving company that wastes your time and resources. People in Texas are rejected for no good reason. The name matches my experience, We were asked to send a certified roof inspection report which we did. The inspector gave a Stella’s review, as it should be for a new house and category 4 slate roof. To my surprise, they rejected us for no reason, The rejection read “two tiles are discolored”. I am skeptical that 2 tiles broke the camel. Call me skeptic, but not stupid. If you do not want to insure folks with decent houses, then say that. Do not send me to roof inspections, only to waste my time with imaginary flaws.

Quick response, care, setting expectations on my Fire incident last year in February 2021. Had good experience working with Jonathan, and then with Ms **. Though many follow-ups required on progress. The claims and approval process moved slow and frustrating, as Lemonade will change their own appraisers for loss and contents until lowest cost obtained. That made us lose months and and uncertainty. But in the end they paid up. Special Thanks to Ms. **, Lemonade adjustor, who helped us recently get some more comp for huge list of damaged contents. I wish they paid more. There is a substantial amount still pending and they are asking for more estimates and items list that they did not cover. After 1-1/2 years of follow-ups, and getting repairs, we are exhausted and tired. Have better things to do in life. :-)

I had a failure with my shower plumbing inside my wall, causing water to leak into adjacent rooms and throughout the bathroom. Repairs required completely gutting the bathroom and starting over, along with repairs to a closet behind the shower and part of a bedroom. Throughout this process, getting help from my claims representative was like pulling teeth. There was a week or two that went by that I absolutely could not get ahold of anyone when I desperately needed information so I could start the rebuild process. Having a catastrophe like this in my house was enough stress, and not getting support from my insurance that I pay for made it much worse.
I requested a supervisor on one occasion because I couldn’t get ahold of my claims rep (after waiting days for a callback) and a supervisor never called. I felt powerless and completely at the mercy of a company that didn’t seem to care about a paying customer. Once I finally got payment issued to me for repairs (long after repairs were complete - forcing me to pay out of pocket to the contractor), I figured it was all over with… Not so fast, it turns out. Two contractors that were hired for the job (Servpro and a lead/asbestos testing company) did not get paid by Lemonade on time, and I was being contacted for the money.
I had to leave my rep another voicemail asking where the money was. This was roughly a month or so after my job was finished. I got a call back from my rep and he promised to issue payment immediately… Once again, not so fast. A few weeks after that, I got a demand email from the Asbestos testing company asking for payment once again. To this day, I don’t know if those folks have been paid. I’m tired of getting emails asking for Lemonade to do their job. I have begun searching for another insurance company.
To be clear, this was Lemonade’s time to shine, if there ever was one. I was on my second year paying for premiums with this company and never used their services until my water leak. They should have proven to me that my money was worth it and provided the best possible service in the industry. This is how you keep customers. If I change insurers, Lemonade will be out of thousands of dollars. It’s in their best interest to keep me around to continue paying premiums, but the service I got reflected an attitude that they could care less. I am disappointed, and will not refer them to anyone looking for insurance.
To be fair, there is an upside to this ordeal. Once I actually did get paid, it was for the full repair amount. My representative didn’t nickel and dime me to death. He saw my repair estimate as fair and paid nearly the full amount I needed to get the job done (minus my deductible, of course). It may have taken more effort than it should have to get to that point, but at least my job was paid in full. Some insurance companies will often shortchange their customers on repairs, and Lemonade did not do that which I am grateful for.
If I had a responsive rep during the process, I would have nothing to complain about. I absolutely did not enjoy being ignored during a stressful situation, and when a supervisor didn’t call me as promised (I was told I would get a call in under 24hrs - never happened), it was the cherry on top. Thank god for my savings account! If I didn’t have money sitting aside for emergencies, this could have been way worse and taken far longer. Mind you, the bathroom needing repairs is the only bathroom in my small house, and I was sleeping on the floor of my friend’s living room and using his shower for over a month during my claim.
