They never took my short-term disability claim seriously. For over a month, they kept telling me they had no update because they couldn’t reach my employers — even though they work directly with them. I had to provide all possible contact information myself, only to receive a call more than a month later from someone who showed zero customer care, informing me that my claim was denied. I’ve been paying for insurance that was never going to cover anything — that’s basically theft. The agent who sold me the policy clearly told me it would cover my maternity leave, and now all my benefits have been cut off. Insurance companies are a scam.

I lost my home because of SunLife. Denied my LTD twice, 1st time I could do medium work then it was pre-existing. 15 months it took. I have a bad heart and never knew it until I had a lung cancer screening. My STD paid right away and if it was pre-existing they wouldn’t have. SunLife was supposed to pay 60% of my pay up to $5000 a month and once my permanent disability went through, they would get back most of the money they paid to me because I would get back pay from my permanent disability going back to the beginning of 2024. SunLife was the bridge between the other 2 and they knew they would get paid back. Sadly they ruined my life and could care less because they know the law is written for them and not us. Get a better company for your insurance because they just want your money. When 3 of my doctors said I no longer could do my job or anything else that was stressful and physical, their doctor said I could, go figure. Huh.

If your employer truly cares for you, they will choose another company other than SunLife. The web pages are extremely vague and difficult to navigate. Absolutely NO description of what it covers other than very basic and vague terms. It seems to be designed to completely frustrate you, so that you give up on claiming any benefits altogether. They collect your money until they can cause you enough anxiety to cancel their so called services. I feel like the 30 days of life after a heart attack guideline to benefits is in place, is for them to have enough time to frustrate and full your anxiety to finish off the heart attack to avoid any payout.

Worst company in the world, I don’t know how they're even in business still! They play the stalling tactics, they request documentation from doctors only to wait months before saying they need more documents from your provider! and ultimately they’re looking for any reason to deny your claim. What’s the point of paying for insurance if when you're going to use them they look for reasons to not approve your claim? These thieves should be in prison! Our debts our piling up while these insurance companies our lining their pockets! **!!! How do they sleep as night? They're ruining people! Karma is **!

If I could give Sunlife 0 stars I would. This is who our company used for disability coverage. I signed up for short-term disability and had a baby. They denied my claim saying it's a pre-existing condition. Even though I was pre-approved months ago. Insurance companies should be held accountable for fraud... taking people's money yet denying claims.

This is the worst company and a class action suit needs to be filed for intentionally making claims processing complex and denying claims for sick and disabled people who pay into this. Customer service is horrible, they always disconnect the call then call back and say “oh sorry we were disconnected”. They make paying the claims difficult so you don't want to call back. They change their turnaround times and avoid paying out claims as much as possible.

I have at least 3 disabilities including heart damage and high cholesterol that directly impact how I do my high stress high demand job. I put off going on disability for 9 years so I could continue working while struggling and fighting to keep my head above water with my combined symptoms. But now that my disabilities are getting worse Sun Life denies my STD claim. I have proven legitimate disabilities. I am not able to walk or feel the bottoms of my feet, at times my hands also go numb so I cannot type. Also have brain fog due to severe sleep apnea and Hashimoto's disease.
One major issue in particular will require corrective surgery because of collapse and the need for life long pain management and still this company denies my STD. I will be retaining a disability attorney in the near future because as this short window of time closes I will am not able to do any type of work let alone meet the unrealistic expectations of my employer. Sun life you are terrible! Do the right thing for once!

So far Nathan my claim rep has been on top of everything. I made sure to get him all the required paperwork and my claim was processed with no problems. I could’ve have asked for a better rep. I’m still waiting on the hospital indemnity claim to be approved but I have a different rep for that so we will see. The first hospital indemnity claim I submitted was denied and I completely understand why. So right now I have nothing but good things to say about Sunlife.

Absolutely the worst company I’ve ever dealt with. Denying simple cleanings that you end up having to pay for yourself. Had to file a grievance with the co. First they say was too close together then I give paperwork proving them wrong and they give me a different reason. Then I prove that wrong. Still fighting with company and gonna go to the state for help!

If I could give 0 stars, I definitely would. Always a lie when you have to call them. I get a few payments and then nothing. They claim "waiting on paperwork from the doctor over a month." The Dr claims they haven't received any new paperwork but will fax new notes from past visit. It's always something 🙄. Every representative you talk to tells something different. Worst experience ever. The pay isn't good and the hassle definitely isn't worth it. Worst experience ever.

I filed a hospital indemnity claim for a hospital stay. Sunlife won't pay out because I was admitted for observation. Now I have to either talk to the doctor and have them take out the word "observation" before they will pay. This is absolute garbage, how are they supposed to observe me if I wasn't admitted?

If I could leave a negative 100 I would. The stupidity of Sunlife is beyond anything you've seen. I was approved for short-term disability!! I was supposed to get paid $2,376 on Monday, November 4th. The codons rep Alicia ** said my bank rejected the deposit. I called my bank and they said no record of any deposit came through.
I knew Alicia was lying. So she takes 3 days and says she will deposit it on Friday. She then gives me the same story. Oh and I called different reps who said the money was deposited the 4th. Then the 5th then the 6th. Again lying their butts off. So today November 8th here is what Alicia said. “Hello Mikael, That number was a typing error on my part, I put the group policy number in the email instead of the zip code.” Are you kidding me? You put 6 digits in for a zip code when all zip codes are 5 digits. My HR at my work blamed me on Tuesday and said I cancelled the payment. They side with Sunlife. Accuse me!!! Sunlife is awful and ALICIA ** should be fired!!!

They will do everything they can to stretch it out as long as possible to bankrupt you. I am 4 months in on the long term disability and have not seen a dime. I couldn't keep up with my payments for the LTD and I am now getting close to foreclosure on my home. They will starve you out to keep from paying a dime.

I wish there was a ZERO for their voting system. I went on disability for mental health issues and went into crises twice already because of SunLife's embarrassing support. SunLife has no values or honor their promises, they played with my mental health and made everything very difficult. If could combine all the awful reviews into one, and even so, it wouldn't be enough to show my frustration and daily anxiety. Needless to say, the delay in payments has put my mortgage behind 3 months. HR must be overwhelmed with complaints against SunLife. SunLife, no sunlight, and no life coming from it. Actually, SunLife is destroying the sanity in my life, and darkening my exhausting days.

My daughter paid for this insurance and has been off work since October 2023. She filed for long-term disability in March 2024 after her short term expired. It took until June before she received correspondence from the claims adjuster. The lady who called was nasty and said that she was on a sabbatical for 6 weeks and no one does her job when she is out. The adjuster sent two checks and now she is back to square one with no payments and asking for paperwork that she has already received. They cut off her payments and she is back to playing the waiting game again. She has no other income and is not married. She is so stressed about her bills that her health is declining. I need someone who I can contact in this company.

If I could give zero Stars I would. I am a 52-year-old single mother, working for a very large company who uses Sun Life. I was told I needed a total knee replacement that would keep me out of work for 8 weeks. In preparation of being out of work I made sure to save a couple of paychecks worth of income. In addition to this, I contacted Sun Life to verify all of the paperwork I needed so that I would be in compliance for my claim. I also had very detailed questions for my rep about when payments would begin and how much they would be. I was told that it would be a 7-Day waiting time frame, and that my payments would be 60% of my income. I decided to go forward with my surgery because I had completed all of the documents that were required and felt confident that my paychecks I had held and the 60% would get me through the eight weeks needed for recovery.
A little over a week following my surgery I was contacted by Sun Life and told that I was approved for my benefit, but that they were paying me $200 a week. The story is quite long but in a nutshell they told me that when I initiated my benefit plan with Sun Life I only selected $200 a week as my payout. Clearly something is not right with that scenario, but when I contacted them to dispute it I referenced the phone call where I was told it was a 60% payout and I felt like they should be responsible for honoring what their representative told me. I am in the customer service industry and I am aware that sometimes we have to make things right with our customers at our expense. It is now been 6 weeks of me going back and forth with them, only to find out that when they listen to the recording I was correct that the girl told me 60% was my payout amount, but she also said she could not guarantee me the dollar amount because the claim had not been filed yet.
She said I had a contract. That is all she said. I was very eager to have the information needed and she should have directed me to my HR department for more information or forwarded me to somebody there who could confirm I had put $200 per week on my documents. Had I known that I would have put my surgery off! And I would have pursued correcting the errors on the paperwork whether I had to wait for an open enrollment period or not. Unacceptable from a customer service point of view! I am now left trying to survive on $200 a week with kids at home and bills that are going unpaid. I plan on letting my employer know that this was not a good experience and hopefully they will consider changing to a company that doesn't average one star on their reviews.

I am working hard on our company to drop these unprofessional losers so others don't experience what I have gone through.

What an absolute joke. Unfortunately, I have no choice unless I change employment (I'm trying!!). Every single experience and interaction I have had with this company has been frustrating. They straight up lie to me. I've heard the promise of "getting back to me within 24 hours" so many times that a month and a half went by and still heard nothing. Holding me hostage for a pathetic 150.$ a week. You should all be ashamed.

I had Sunlife insurance for awhile. I decided to cancel it. I called them and canceled as per instruction I was given. They took 2 more partial payments anyway. I had to call my bank and cancel any further payments with my bank. I called again to head office, but they don't know anything apparently. They directed me to the local office. We exchanged emails and nothing. It's been 3 weeks. I was asking for a refund, but I don't think I will get it. So, if you want to cancel Sunlife insurance, don't even bother calling them, just call your bank and stop payments. Otherwise, they will be stealing your money.

Besides numerous “lost paperwork” they have also stated they have tried “reaching out” to me numerous times, funny thing as they have all my information, phone numbers, email. They also have a website I log onto weekly with no updates. While watching the payment I have noticed that they disappear every month the day it’s due in my account.

What a complete joke of a company. You can’t run any type of good business when the people that work for your company have zero compassion. They only gather information to somehow use it against you. BEWARE. This company will NOT HELP you. They will only tear you down and do anything they can to NOT give you the money you so desperately need. I wish more people read these reviews and less business had this company as insurance. Because if you’ve ever had the displeasure of working with anyone here. You know how truly bad it is. It’s a disgrace honestly. They should be ashamed of how they treat other human beings, but they are not. This company would prefer you lose everything you’ve worked you’re entire life for versus actually helping you. PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. PLEASE.

Mine claim was/is for wellness, it been over three weeks, they said they will call me back, I'm yet to hear from them although they see my many attempts to reach them. I hate if I have a serious claim to file. I have had life insurance for over 15 years with them, I'm scared if something happen to me my kids will not be able to collect, I best look for a different policy, before it's too late.

Unfortunately my company uses Sunlife for FMLA and Disability insurance. In January I went out of work to take care of my husband. At this point I feel like I need to get a lawyer. Garbage company.

I don’t know where to start. There is no end to the number of times they need to get the same thing, they just keep saying they don’t have it. More than once they have just needed one more thing, then when they eventually acknowledge that they have that, they suddenly need just one more thing that had already been sent, I can’t expect my husband’s MD to send the same thing over and over. I was on the phone with the representative, after being connected to the wrong department several times, debating with him whether or not I sent a blank email before he eventually said it had the dates they asked for. This is all clearly intentional. My HR said they get it this kind of feedback on them all the time.

My advice is NOT take Short-Term/Long-Term disability insurance if Sun Life is offered through your employer. Based on my experience and several others it would be best to create a savings account or research other options. I signed up for supplemental disability insurance through my employer during open enrollment like many of us do, because of that worst case scenario. SunLife Financial was the only company that was offered and being that my employer was a multi-billion dollar resort company, I figured SunLife was a legitimate company, but I was so very wrong! Over a year later, I was diagnosed with what my urologist and oncologist described as a ‘very aggressive form of cancer that required immediate treatment involving surgery, radiation and hormone therapy. I was advised by my supervisor to leave work and begin drawing my supplemental disability benefits.
Despite multiple reports from my team of doctors, Sun Life denied all claims. An appeal was filed and again denied, despite my complete inability to work which was documented by doctors. Nearly a year later, Sunlife relented and paid a portion the entire claim. By then, due to inability to work, and SunLife’s apparent policy of denying all claims, I had been evicted, lost my vehicle and was suffering from depression due to the whirlwind of negative actions resulting from SunLife’s continued denials. Their supposed customer service all the way to upper management are difficult in dealing with and seem to take pleasure in denying claims. Stay far away from this scam of an insurance company.
