Closed on September 30, 2025. Now it is March 22, & we still cannot use our backyard due to poor final grading & drainage issues & standing water. Many other issues, 4 ft white pole standing in front yard, who knows what it’s for. Vanities in bathroom coming away from the wall. Shower leaking down wall going to the basement. Trashy appliances. Front door doesn’t seal. Problems go on & on. We were told after all building was completed that the drive or road would be resurfaced, now we’re being told that’s it. Potholes everywhere from huge heavy construction trucks. Curbs have missing concrete as does the grassy areas between road & sidewalks.

Two neighbors have had nails in their tires, probably due to lack of cleanup in the road. Every day, something else goes wrong. These are supposed to be new homes. You’d think nothing would go wrong for several years. Living here in this Williamsburg, Ohio subdivision is a nightmare!! If I could leave no stars, I would. Also sales agent was a complete **. King was his first name, don’t know his last. Every question asked, he acted as though it was an imposition to answer. Lured in with a low interest rate. Beware!!

Updated on 04/26/2026: D.R. Horton’s claim that they have "forwarded" this to the Delaware division is not a resolution. I have received a dismissive response from the Assistant Customer Service Manager, Brad, who is attempting to shift liability for my high utility bills onto a subcontractor. Required Action:
    1. Provide a written schedule for landscaping restoration and mold remediation within 48 hours.
    2. Provide the process for submitting my utility statements for direct reimbursement by D.R. Horton.

    3. Assign a new representative to this case immediately.

The mold remains a health hazard, and my yard remains a hazardous construction zone. I will continue to update this review until these structural and safety issues are resolved.

Original Review: Run from D.R. Horton at Barksdale Crossing in Elkton, MD. Bought a new construction home here in 2025, and it has been a nightmare of poor quality and zero accountability! Have dealt with persistent basement mold and a never-ending water leakage issue that has sent utility bills through the roof. Instead of taking responsibility for these structural defects, their representative, Brad, was insulting by claiming that mold remediation was a "courtesy" and trying to blame the humidity on a rug rather than the building's failure.

Furthermore, Sobieski Plumbing's "fix" failed within weeks, and D.R. Horton has left my lawn in shambles after digging it up, refusing to send a landscaper to repair the damage. This reflects a total lack of proper inspection and a failure of their claim to be the "#1 Home Builder." Their reps act like doing their job is a favor! Save yourself the stress, the health risks of mold, and the financial drain. Buy from a builder who actually cares about their customers!

We purchased a new D.R. Can’t wait to get rid of this home. It is not a well built home as it is drafty. The windows howl from wind blowing in that my blinds blow away from the windows, what an extremely horrible built home. I only hope I can sell this disaster before anyone finds out what a horrible builder DR Horton is. No recommendations to any friends and family to ever purchase a home from this builder. Not even a year in tankless hot water heater went out- left family of 4 without hot water during sub-freezing temps for 3 days. Hallway needed touch-up paint - paint color they gave doesn't match- Sherwin Williams says the paint looks watered down. Warranty issues always receive they same comment from warranty department- THIS IS NOT COVERED. Worst experience ever- Will not buy from them again.

The most frustrating part has been the tone and communication. As a female homeowner, I have been repeatedly talked down to rather than listened to. Warranty service should never require repeated follow-ups or arguments just to have legitimate issues addressed. On top of that, I was given false information by a D.R. Horton representative about what the village had approved regarding the drainage plan. It raises the question: does D.R. Horton knowingly tolerate or hire staff who treat women disrespectfully?

Been in my DR Horton home for almost 7 years. I hate many things. Like the fact the ALL the floors squeaked worse than the 50 year old home with water damage I had before. Or the upgraded carpet they forced on me was pretty much garbage after 5 years. All the trim is cheap crap that is falling apart. Joist spacing was spaced differently all over and exceeds most standards. Made drywalling the basement ceiling a real joy. All my lighting fixtures are lower quality than you’d find in a big box store. I think replace over a 100 bulbs a year in all fixtures other than the fixtures I’ve installed. All appliances have already been replaced due to failure. It’s not only cheap products but cheap craftsman they hire.

Moved into our D.R. Horton house in Sept. 2025, it is now Feb. 20, 2026. I've had three warranty issues since moving in.

    1) The oven supplied by D.R. Horton had the door fall off, not covered by D.R. Horton warranty. Called Whirlpool on Jan. 13, 2026. The repair service could not come out for a week. Came out, connected part of the oven door, left, said he needed parts to complete the job. Did not hear anything until Feb. 15th, after I left a message that I would contact Whirlpool and request a new service provider. Still will not have parts for 8-10 days according to the service tech.

    2) Bought the ADT service recommended as this is a 'full tech' house. Had a fire alarm go off due to a smokey skillet. ADT did not get the notice because the fire alarms installed by D.R. Horton are not covered nor can they be integrated into the ADT system. I would need to buy and have installed new fire alarms for ADT to know if the house was burning down.

    3) A window located in the dining area is cracked along the seam. Looks like a faulty installation caused a pressure point in the window. Not covered by D.R. Horton nor Austin Windows. Neither cover cracked nor broken windows under their warranty.

D.R. Horton's warranty staff said, 'I'm sorry, I thought that it was implied that you would need to pay for the replacement of the window." How was giving me the window installer's information implying that I would be responsible?

It was implied (more than once) that D.R. Horton had a one-year full warranty to cover any issues. Implied is not contractual I am finding out. Any concrete work (including slab, I think), roof, landscaping, drainage culvert, or any thing not directly built by D.R. Horton is not warrantied. Unless a wall falls in, you might as well call a service tech instead of trying to deal with D.R. Horton's warranty department and it's contractors. At least Whirlpool sent a service tech.

Nothing is level, from the shelves in the closet, to the shelves in the pantry, and even the windows in the bedroom. The walls are not straight, you can clearly see where they curve in some places. I definitely expected more for what we paid for this house. I had way higher expectations for a brand new home.

We’ve been in our home 3 1/2 years. It was new when we bought it. We’ve had pipe problems (a screw was actually screwed into a kitchen pipe), a zillion nail pops, dry wall cracking, bath tub gets scratched up easily and shower leaked into the dry wall. Not to mention washer, dryer and oven have had to either be fixed or replaced, not because of operator problems. The kitchen floor creaks, the carpet is worn down and the paint is so thin everything shows up on it. You can’t wipe down the walls because the paint literally disintegrates. We’ve had contractors come and work on restructuring one of the bathrooms because it the shower was leaking and ruining the wall. They were shocked at how bad the construction was behind the drywall. No one of these things are due to owner issues or wear and tear. You would think Horton would read these reviews and change their ways.

I want to share my experience as a first-time homebuyer with D.R. Horton in Troy, AL. My home cost over $350,000, and unfortunately it has been a very frustrating experience. Since moving in, I’ve dealt with multiple issues that should not be present in a newly built home. The yard has significant standing water every time it rains. After months of phone calls and submitting several warranty claims, a contractor finally came out — but only partially addressed the issue. One side of the yard was completed, while the other side was left half done, and the standing water problem still exists.

Inside the home, there are several cracks in the crown molding, as well as cracks forming along the upstairs wall corners. The shower has leaked water behind the wall, and I had to repeatedly request service before repairs were addressed. When I submitted my one-year warranty repair request, only certain items were completed, while others were left unresolved.

Communication has been extremely disappointing. Since my neighborhood (Oak Park) was established in 2023, there have reportedly been seven different superintendents assigned. Warranty requests often went unanswered, or I was told they were not received or that the team was too busy. As a first-time buyer, this experience has been overwhelming and not worth the stress. I would not recommend purchasing a home from this builder based on my experience. After doing further research, I’ve also learned of other legal complaints involving D.R. Horton, which makes me wish I had documented every warranty request and taken stronger action sooner. I share this so others can make informed decisions and carefully document everything throughout the homebuying process.

The day I chose a D.R. Horton home was early 2021 when there was a home buying frenzy due to low interest rates. I clearly remember there was a flyer at the sales office with the home selling for less than the salesperson quoted me. Seemed awkward but I understood the price had been hiked due to the frenzy at the time. I was told after agreeing to purchase the home that the home would be built and I was told it would take 4 months and it took almost 6 months. When I moved in I noticed the following: one air conditioning vent was installed crooked, the tiled bathrooms had no sealant at the baseboards, there was air coming in in one of the bedrooms at one corner of the baseboard. Weeks and months later insects were coming in to the kitchen and bathrooms.

Along with that my Bryant HVAC started failing to heat and cool my house. I’ve had technicians out here every year to date trying to get the heating working but have failed to successfully troubleshoot the problem. What was really troubling was the back yard. It being of years of hard packed dirt was tilled just enough to leave dirt rocks of up to 7” in diameter. It took me over a year to break those dirt rocks where I could plant some grass that eventually didn’t take because of the dryness from the hot summers. I am regretting having purchased this home built by hired workers by D.R. Horton. Very sloppy work and shady dealings.

We have lived in our DR Horton home which we purchased as new construction for 10 ½ years. We would never buy DR Horton again. It is obvious that DR Horton does not select sub contractors based on quality and has no process to evaluate them. Some of the work DR Horton’s people do is also subpar. During our first year we discovered an opening had been left in the outside structure which was not found until a colony of bees had made a home in the attic. DR Horton refused to pay for the exterminator to eliminate the bees.

DR Horton performed a one time warranty repair to problems found within the first year accumulated and turned in on a list. The employee overseeing the repair work commented that he had never seen a list as long as what we submitted. One of the repairs was the flat portion of the roof over the back porch which had not been rubberized to withstand the Arizona heat. The repairs on that list were performed satisfactorily except for the seal on the bottom of the garage door which was never right until we replaced the whole system which is discussed below. Everything that follows from here was found subsequent to those repairs.

I am reviewing these many repairs that have been needed way too soon for a new house as we are starting our third day with no water as we wait for a plumber. A pipe in the attic was leaking above the laundry room, ruining that ceiling and who knows what else. I have been a home owner since 1979 and have never had to deal with this issue. This includes our last home where we lived for 17 years and was 53 years old when we moved. I am sure this problem is due to the cheap plastic plumbing we found out DR Horton used.

Last year we replaced our entire garage door system installed by Wayne Dalton after paying for several repairs earlier. The garage door safety sensors malfunctioned periodically for years. Turned out the wiring was sloppy and didn’t even have the correct number of wire nuts. The main spring had to be replaced. The repairman (not from Wayne Dalton) said he had been replacing them all over town. After that the door had begun to make a loud banging sound each time it was opened or closed. We decided to replace everything using the contractor who had made the repairs.

Our water heater was installed by The Sunny Plumber, now part of GOETTL in an orientation that prevented servicing the rod with sacrificial metal. Even though the tank was drained each year it had to be replaced after 7 years. Also the inlet and outlet lines were kinked when installed so it was lucky to have lasted as long as it did. Our second year we began receiving annual service on our HVAC system from a provider in Tucson. Each year for the first 3 years additional problems were found in the installation performed by Chas Roberts. This included the hook up to the main breaker box.

Our second year an exhaust fan in the bathroom had to be replaced. This fan is 13 feet above the bathroom floor. The following year the regulating valve for one of the showers had to be replaced. Spacing between the plumbing, the shower insert and the supporting structure had been done in a haphazard manner by DR Horton increasing the difficulty of the repair. Neither of these should have needed to be replaced so soon after the house was built.

The light above the kitchen sink had to be replaced after 5 years. This was a bulb that was supposed to last at least 9 years. A telescoping device was used to change the bulb as it is 14 feet off the floor. After the bulb was changed and the device was being removed from the new bulb, the entire light canister came out of the ceiling because it had been installed in a sloppy manner.

During year 6 we had to replace the dishwasher which turned out to be the cheapest model GE dishwasher available. Earlier we had to replace the drive motor for the cheap GE microwave. The front yard landscaping was pathetic. We discovered soon after we moved in that the rock was spread so thin it barely covered the dirt, no more than one stone thick. The plants were 3 cheap hop bushes that grow to 25 feet planted one foot in front of the front bedroom window and an even cheaper trashy Mesquite tree that shed pods all year. When we got our front yard landscaped by a local contractor the first job performed was to remove all the plants done by the original landscaper.

I currently reside in The Preserves section of Sawgrass Lakes, West Melbourne, FL. We have experienced issues with our tile floors for several months now. We inquired within the Sawgrass Lakes Community group on Facebook looking for some recommendations and found that there are tons of people in the neighborhood experiencing the exact same issue as us. The tiles throughout the house started with a popping sound and eventually pop up off the floor. We had a contractor come in this week to look at the work and give us an estimate to fix the problem. He said he has been receiving many calls regarding this issue as well.

Apparently, when the floors were put down they were put down very "sloppy" not using enough or the proper glue to adhere the tiles causing them to begin popping up and eventually lifting throughout the entire house. In speaking with the neighbors throughout Sawgrass I have learned that this was fixed for a few homeowners on the street, but they signed a contract with DR Horton to not discuss or sue. Now that I have had contact with many people in the neighborhood more and more are coming out saying this is a huge issue and would like to come together for a resolution. These houses should ALL not be experiencing this issue and we will be looking further into getting this issue resolved as a group.

Our walls and floorboards have cracks everywhere, our door frames are all gapping, floorboards are splitting and sunken, paint is peeling off of our kitchen cabinets. Terrible materials and workmanship. They didn’t even install our air exchange correctly and it wasn’t functioning for over a year. Awful company that doesn’t care about you.

I will be honest in saying the process to buy the home was good. However, I have had 2 times now where the home has flooded. Once was in my kitchen a month after I moved in, June 2025, when we got to the root of the issue the builders pierced a water pipe with a nail gun. Over time the nail rusted, broke off and my kitchen was flooded.

Fast forward to last night, 01/04/26, my bathroom, bedroom, master closet and part of the guest room closet was also flooded. Get to the root of the problem and again, the builders pierced my hot water line with another nail... The representative was unable to reach the on call plumbers last night so I was without water from 1:45 AM to around 930 AM this morning. The representative, also manager, told me last night nothing could be done since they weren't answering. So there has been negligence in the build of the home and then the people they contract with are unresponsive in emergencies. The contracted plumbers were unresponsive in the flooding on June as well and so I was without water all night.

Updated on 01/03/2026: I first I would like to apologize for the review. Although customer service response time could be improved, it was no fault of D R Horton in regards to the electrical issue. However, the grinder issue has been an issue that neither of us were aware of. When I’m wrong, I will take full responsibility and apologize! Although the grinder and standing water is still an issue, I apologize for the electrical issue.

Original Review: I have submitted request in reference to a grinder pump and was told first to contact the water company, once I contacted the water company, I was told to contact the plumbing listed on the grinder only then to be told to put in a request with D R Horton. I was told there was nothing they could do. I have been in my home for less than 2 years and I am having the most horrible experience ever. Currently, I am experiencing electrical issues and no one has yet to reach back out to me. My food is completely thawed out from freezer. I am beyond pissed with this company. You can't speak with a person, just send maintenance request that no one care to respond to. What a joke????

Hello Arnita - it is unfortunate that your home is nearly a year out of warranty.

We bought our home back in 2021. Everything was great at first. Our floors suck. They have been peeling up. Pantry shelves suck. They have already fallen off. The builders didn't use the right screws. They didn't even put them into any studs either. The front door you can literally see light through it. Not to mention D.R. Horton is still in charge of our HOA and they haven't even fixed anything. They don't enforce anything either. They are about a joke. So what do we exactly pay 350 a year for if we don't get anything out of it.. I don't recommend people to buy from them. Nothing about a nightmare.

DR Horton is the most incompetent builder ever, they pay no attention to the small details, and god forbid you tell them they did something wrong, they won’t take any responsibility for anything and will try to pawn everything off on the buyer, please listen to the warnings and never purchase a DR Horton home.

Would give them ZERO stars if I could. They hire the cheapest, lowest quality trades and their new construction homes all have issues from the minute you set foot in them, then they try to hide behind their warranties and won’t fix their issues. Roof leaks now on a three plus year old roof that should have lasted 20 years. Floors uneven and creaking from the beginning, cheapest of paint and carpeting; flood the first week we moved in because their trades were flushing Sheetrock down the toilet - I could go on for days. And this isn’t just me, it’s every other neighbor I speak to. Oh and their boat and switch when I bought - they told me my back yard was going to be 70 x 40 feet and it’s maybe 40 percent of that.

An open letter to anyone considering buying a D.R. Horton home. Let me start off by saying this is not to trash D.R. Horton. My goal would be to even just protect one family from going through what we have gone through with this home builder I’ll have done my job and I can feel better. This was mine and my husband's very first home buying experience and I know most home by experiences aren’t usually smooth, but ours was nothing short of a nightmare.

First of all let me start off by saying in the beginning Janet was very sweet and kind, but that simply faded as the weeks went by. She almost seemed annoyed by us, our questions wanting to see things as the building process started wanting to do walk-throughs in a home that we were purchasing we were always deterred away from all of these things. The real nightmare began only a few short weeks before closing when Janet called me to tell me that they had discovered mold in our home but that it was no big deal and that everything would be fine. That should’ve been our red flag number one and we should’ve just walked away, but they told us there was no other lots available that they were willing to give us at the current interest rate that we had received for our lot.

Looking back, we should’ve just walked away. Little did we know that that one problem would just be the first on a list of many many problems. After they tore our house down to the studs and rebuilt it to make sure there was no longer mold during the time which I had to argue with them that I wanted new cabinetry and not just have everything that was pulled out put back in something you would think they would automatically do, but that was a fight as well. Once again it was no big deal to Janet who blatantly threw her head back, laughing at me or any of her team. Mind you they’re not the ones whose children and family would be living in this home.

After we moved in within, I would say about a week we started having issues with the flooring. The flooring was bubbling, and when you walked on it, you could hear the air underneath the flooring. It was moving. We were told that it was just because the house was settling or that it’s the way the sunshine shines through the back door that causes these things they fixed it once fixed it twice, but we still had issues we still to this day have issues with our flooring, making a popping noise when you walk across it because it was not fitted and done right and it is uneven so much so it’s very visible.

The second flooring issue was the carpet. Within three months of moving in the edges of all the carpet started to fray in every room on every edge. This issue we were told was (wear and tear). Mind you we don’t even wear shoes in our home so how could this be worn and torn?! After arguing with warranty they finally came out and tried to re-stretch the carpet, which then only caused more issues rippling on certain areas of the carpet after another fight, they came out and replaced the carpet completely. Yet we still have the same shredding issues on every edge in every bedroom and the living room. Most recently noticing the ripping of the carpet in the master bedroom. Warranty said they contract the Work out and the contractors use the cheapest materials possible. Almost a $500,000 home with the cheapest materials possible, great.

Another major issue was cracking up the ceiling walls. They came out and fix the areas twice, but the second time they came out they actually made the situation much worse and we now have a gaping 2 inch hole on the ceiling line of our home in the living room. We were told this is not under warranty and that it is from the House settling and I was sent a certified letter saying that they would not fix it. Most recently the HVAC unit started to have issues as we have been living for over a week with no heat in our home. And right after this started a few days later we started having major electrical issues and the hot water heater is no longer working. Certain outlets in the home are no longer working.

If you are considering buying a D.R. Horton home please think again. Yes the lower interest rate seems amazing but there is a reason these homes are sold at a “discounted interest rates.“ They are literally slapped together with the “cheapest materials possible” and sold to you as a beautiful brand new home. We are not the only ones in the neighborhood with issues. The list of things that have gone wrong and that have completely failed with just our street is a mile long. Just save yourself the headache and heartache and go with a better home builder like I wish we would have.

Hi Megan - please ensure all requests for warranty service are properly submitted on the company's website. You should submit requests for warranty service for your HVAC to your HVAC manufacturer as your home is more than one year old, the manufacturer's warranty would be appropriate.
