Our Whirlpool, model #FG1F034T3NOV, started having problems on the weekend of January 3 and 4th, 2009. We called Lowe's to report this problem and were told to call Whirlpool at 1-877-817-6750 to report the problem. We called and spoke with a woman from INDIA with a strong accent who must have thought she had a crystal ball. She immediately told us what is wrong with the unit, before hearing what is happening. She said she will mail out a part. WE HAD NOT FOUND THIS WEBSITE BEFOREHAND AND WERE UNAWARE THAT THERE WAS SO MANY PROBLEMS WITH THIS UNIT. We were told to call Sears at 1-800-676-5589, which we did, and we were told that they could work us in for repairs in approx 6 days.

After explaining that wasn't acceptable, we were told that they would try to get on in 3 days. We left for a doctor's appt feeling there wasn't a thing we could do but nurse the unit until they were able to send a repairman. When we returned home from the doctor, we found the unit is DEAD. We called Whirlpool again, hearing somewhere that if you press the Spanish Speaking Only button, you get an American to speak with, so we did. They lady was very compassionate, caring and said (before I could) that it was not acceptable. She explained that there was no reason to repair this unit as it was clearly dead. She immediately authorized us to get a replacement and authorized re-installation at their cost. Sounds good so far. She said to call Lowe's and tell them of this new turn of events and give them the new number showing that the unit was to be replaced and reinstalled at Whirlpool's cost.

Of course, there is a cold front that just blew in and it is freezing outside. Lowe's said they would do all they can. Later, they called back to say there was no plumber available until later in the week. I called back to Whirlpool and was told that I should take the unit back to Lowe's and pick up the new unit and I could find my own plumber to install it and that Whirlpool would reimburse me up to $150. Yeah, and I have the winning lottery numbers too. My husband uninstalled the unit and we drove it back to Lowe's. Then we found that we were not supposed to uninstall as it could void the warranty. Then we heard that if we don't have a licensed plumber that they call reinstall it, we have voided the warranty. My husband is on his way back to Lowe's as there is a needed part that is missing.

While he was gone, I was trying to find the website for American Water Heaters so we can file a complaint and I found this site. I have spent the last 12 hours FRUSTRATED, INFURIATED AND DO RIGHT PISSED OFF. We heard how bad our economy is. BRING THE DAMN CUSTOMER SERVICE JOBS BACK FROM INDIA. Put Americans back to work making products that have the pride and workmanship to last longer than the warranty. I would like to propose that a list be compiled and published showing every company who has outsourced to other countries and then let Americans be aware of them when making a decision as to what company to purchase from. That would give us back the power to stop this crap and to save lots of days of frustration and high blood pressure. Not to mention the hundreds and thousands of dollars that we are all wasting on repairs, replacements and such.

I have a Whirlpool model FG water heater. The pilot wouldn't stay lit last May of 2008. Plumber cost me $365.00. It stayed running until Jan 1, 2009. Plumber came out Jan. 2 and has to order retro part? He should be back today, Jan. 5, 2009. I'm guessing it will cost the same as last time, or more than a new appliance. I ran a search engine after the plumber told me of problems and was astonished. I won't shop at Lowe's, buy Whirlpool or Kenmore appliances or shop at Sears. How can you continue to sell something that you know does not work?

Whirlpool water heater failed on 1/1/09, less than a year after being installed. It will not relight, so I replaced the thermocouple as advised by Whirlpool. Worked one day and no hot water again. Now they say I need a gas control valve, which I am waiting for. Lowe's and Whirlpool should be ashamed for selling a known faulty water heater, which I have found out has been giving problems for at least 6 years now. No hot water in the middle of winter for the last 5 days waiting for a replacement part from Whirlpool.

I purchased my Whirlpool Gas Heater from Lowe's for $300.00 with installation cost of $150.00 in March of 2008. New Year's Day - KAPUT! Pilot light would not stay lit thus I'm having a new water heater (any unit other than Whirlpool associated) installed this week for additional cost of $550.00 including installation. CLASS ACTION? - YES! I blame Lowe's Home Improvement (not responsible they say) as well as Whirlpool for not informing and ignoring their responsibility to their now former consumers!

Our plumber purchased and installed a 40 Gallon Gas Whirlpool Water Heater mid-2007. Right after Christmas, the pilot light started going out. I would relight it and relight it and finally, on 01/02/2008, it went out and I could not get it relit. I called Whirlpool and got nowhere. The serial number on my heater is not visible (sticker partially scraped off from installation), so they won't even deal with me on any level! I'm having our plumber try to fix as we speak, but I will be out money on this. Consequences: multiple days without hot water for my family of 6! This is crazy, Whirlpool/Lowe's needs to address this issue.

Whirlpool water heater has left hand threads on the thermocouple that just went out. I went to 10 stores and plumbing supplies and no one has this part. Why would they make something that has a part you can't buy? My family has had no hot water for three days and I have wasted two days looking for something that doesn't exist. The water heater is 2-3 years old.

My Whirlpool 50 gallon, 9-year warranty, hot water tank stopped working. The pilot would not stay lit. The heater was purchased from Lowe's on 4-14-04 and is the flame lock type that I see everyone is having problems with. Because it is Sunday and Whirlpool customer service is closed, I went to Lowe's to get a replacement thermocouple, which ended up not being the left hand thread that was needed. While looking for the correct part online, I came across this site. After reading dozens of complaints, it looks like I have more problems than I figured on. I guess the warranty paper can be used to light the pilot on the new non-Whirlpool hot water tank. Just kidding. I will try the replacement parts first.

In early 2007, I purchased Whirlpool Flame Lock Water Heater from Lowe's. It's the Model sg1j4040t3nov, product #: 0733020. It was installed successfully, worked for a year (just past warranty) and then in Aug. 2008, the upper and lower sensor failed. After several calls to Whirlpool call center failed to result in solution, I tracked down mfg. American Water Heater. I received replacement part via American Water Heater. I installed the part. It worked okay for a month. During this time, the pilot went out. Now it has lower sensor failure again. In the process of tracking down information on this heater, I learned of the many complaints about this item. I believe this item to be a lemon.

We bought a Whirlpool water heater less than 1 year ago. The pilot light will not stay lit. We contacted the helpline provided on the water heater and they told us we needed to replace the control valve, which we did. They are supposed to reimburse us the cost. The pilot light still would not ignite; we contacted the helpline again and were told we needed a thermocouple replaced. We are having a technician come out but the earliest they could come would be in two days. We asked about the warranty and were told the only one that could make the decision to use the warranty is the technician if the appliance is not repairable. After replacing two parts on a fairly new product, I just want my money back so that I can purchase a different water heater.

I have been looking on the internet and saw that there are numerous complaints about the same product with the same problems. Is there any way we could all file a class action suit to make them honor their warranty? Lowe's just told us to contact Whirlpool so they were zero help. I would think they would want to sell quality products so as not to tarnish their reputation, but I guess they aren't concerned with anything after they get our money.

On 01/02/08 the water heater went out. The pilot was out. I re-lit the pilot light and it cycled to heat. The pilot light went out again! Did some research and saw this website. Thank you for being here. I found it very informing and very interesting. So after disassembling two times, I found my problem. It was the thermocouple. I disassembled one time. I used a piece of emery cloth, cleaned the thermocouple, reassembled and it fired up. It has been working all night. I know it might not work for all, but it did for me. P.S. My water heater is new (04/07/08). Almost made it 7 months.

I am on my 3rd thermocouple on my top of the line Whirlpool 50 gallon water heater. It is Saturday and there is not anyone at Whirlpool that cares about this available. I went to Lowe’s to buy another one and found out the Whirlpool vendor pulled everyone off the shelves. Now, I not only have a defective hot water heater, but I have no way to get parts to repair it. A generic thermocouple will not work with this unit. I cannot believe that such a clear cut case of "poor design, terrible customer service, and don't care attitude" from a large corporation like WHIRLPOOL has not received more attention! Posting on a message board is great, but there will not make any difference. I wasted my money on this product and even Whirlpool doesn't acknowledge hot water heaters on their own website.

I purchased a hot water heater, Whirlpool Model FG1F4034T3N08. This water heater has failed three or four times now and has cost me plumber repair fees and also some parts cost each time. I estimate that I have paid at least as much in repairs as the water heater cost in the first place. A class action suit should be started against both Whirlpool and Lowe's. These heaters have severe faults which should have caused the product to be recalled. Hundreds, if not thousands of people, have registered the same problems on the internet. When is someone going to take the necessary action to fill a class action lawsuit on this?

Whirlpool should be required to recall this defective product and reimburse all repair and/or shipping costs to the customers involved. Lowe's should share the costs of reimbursement as they continued to sell this lemon after it became apparent that it was no good. My heater had several thermocouple problems and one control valve failure. Each occurrence caused us to have no hot water for extended periods and of course the repair costs I already mentioned. If a class action suit is filed, I want to be part of it. Such a suit should be widely publicized.

I had a Whirlpool water heater installed on May 31, 2008 by contractors of Lowe's Home Center. On December 30, I contacted Lowe's stating that I did not have any hot water. The person advised me to contact Whirlpool who will walk me through the steps of re-lighting the pilot light. Meanwhile, a service technician for my furnace came. He showed me how to light the pilot but it would not stay on. I called Lowe's again and the person requested my model number. She requested me to come to the store and pick up a kit that Whirlpool had distributed and this would resolve the problem. I refused and requested Lowe's to send the installer out with the kit. I had to contact Lowe's twice again before hearing from the installer that he could not service me before January 5. This was unacceptable so I called Lowe's headquarter. Christina at the customer care desk informed me that my problem was not a Lowe's problem and provided me a number for American Water Heater which was Whirlpool. The recording spoke of purchasing the kit.

I contacted Lowe's again and advised that I wanted the water heater removed and/or replaced. Lowe's tells me that they knew about this issue back in the summer when they began receiving complaints. Meanwhile, they advised that they would replace my current water heater and that Whirlpool had finally corrected the issue. I am currently waiting on the installer and hopefully this will work. I told the gentleman at Lowe’s that they performed a disservice to me and others who have purchased these water heaters. Something should have been forwarded to the customers advising of the potential problem either from Lowe's or Whirlpool. After speaking to my sister, I learned that this was a problem as far back as 2004. My sister had purchased a Kenmore water heater with the same problem. (Whirlpool makes Kenmore.) I will not recommend Lowe's to anyone for purchasing of household appliances and will not recommend Whirlpool either.

I bought a Whirlpool 50 gallon water heater with flame lock less than 7 months ago. Over the past few weeks, the water seemed to be getting colder and colder, until the pilot light just would not stay on. I thought it was an isolated incident, however, it continued. I searched the internet and found this site. I originally was freaked out about the horror stories I was reading. But I e-mailed Whirlpool at their site, www.whirlpoolwaterheatersupport.com, and clicked on the Talk to Us section. Lo and behold, a recognized problem.

I e-mailed them with my phone number (you have to enter your phone number just right or it will not accept it, use parentheses and dashes). Within 2 hours, I got a phone call from Whirlpool. I described the problem and he said okay. No questions, no explanations, no needed information. The part is being shipped out the same day. Although according to the stories I have read, this might not be enough. I will continue my battle with Whirlpool (if indeed it does not help, for the 6-year warranty time period) and I will carry it on to Lowe's.

A few days ago, my pilot light on my Flame Lock Whir pool water heater started going out. I relit it and about 5 minutes later, the pilot light and the burn flame went out at the same time. So, I tried to relight the pilot, but when I would release the red button, the flame would go out. I then went to the Whirlpool website to get additional troubleshooting instructions. By following these instructions, the problem seemed to be the BFG Gas Thermostat or the Thermocouple. So, I replaced each of them and the pilot still doesn't stay lit. The website should have informed its customers of this problem. I've been working on this for two days and spent 65 dollars of my money attempting to repair it.

I purchased a Whirlpool Flame Lock water heater 2.5 years ago. The pilot light went out on New Year's Day (how convenient!). I went to Lowe's to get a new thermocouple as this is where I purchased it. I told the clerk about my issue and the other complaints. She gave me a new manifold kit. Fortunately, I was able to install it and had hot water last night. I am cautiously skeptical though. Stay tuned...

Pilot light won't stay lit. It's under warranty. Lowe's (seller) doesn't have the upgrade kit in stock, but hopes to have it in a week. I can order the kit from Whirlpool but they want $30 for shipping and then I have to have a plumber install it. I understand the new kit won't be ignitor start anymore. The local plumber (contractor for Lowe's) says I should get a whole new valve and thermocouple, but the Whirlpool phone rep says, "No, you only need the thermocouple kit." Lowe's only sells Whirlpool brand water heaters. The replacement will be $348 plus $250 installation. The Lowe's salesman is trying to find some kits at another store, but it may be a WEEK or more, and they have a backlog of requests already - 14 in the last two weeks at just one Lowe's here.

Count me in on any class action lawsuit. This is ridiculous. A reputable company would have notified people of this problem and worked aggressively to fix the problem before it occurred. Whirlpool is obviously trying to hide and minimize their costs on an obvious product defect and probably a safety defect on gas water heaters. I can see big time lawsuits if anyone gets injured or killed from a Whirlpool water heater exploding, from whatever reason, now that this list of complaints is so long (154 pages per my printer).

I purchased a Whirlpool water heater from Lowe's on 6/12/04. Model # FG1H4040T3NOV With the Flame Lock safety system. I thought that if I purchased a name brand like Whirlpool, from a reputable company like Lowe's that it would last for at least 10 yrs. Boy was I wrong. 4 yrs & 6 mo. later, the pilot light goes out and won't light.

I decided to check the internet to see if anyone else had this problem. Much to my surprise, I see not just a few but hundreds of complaints about the same problem. I would think that if a huge company like Whirlpool cared about their name or their company, they would have recalled this piece of garbage they made and repaid their customers for their losses.

Now I don't know about everyone else but I can't afford to wait and see what Whirlpool will do to fix this problem, and have no hot water for god knows how long. But I will say this, I will never buy another large appliance from Lowe's because they don't seem to care. They continue to sell Whirlpool water heaters, nor will I ever buy another Whirlpool product in my lifetime. If they don't care about their customers, then I certainly don't care about them. I hope the CEO of Whirlpool reads these complaints. Then they won't wonder why they go out of business when nobody else buys their products either.

Our landlord replaced an old water heater in April of ‘08 with a Whirlpool Flame Lock water heater. It worked well until 12/27/08 when the pilot light went out and we could not get it started again. Called the landlord and he sent out his repair man. He checked everything out and stated that the Thermocouple had gone out. He replaced it, started the pilot and left. He was gone only for about an hour. I went out to check the water heater and the pilot had gone out again. I tried to restart it and it would not stay lit after letting go of the restart button.

I called the repair man and he went to Lowe’s and got another thermocouple and replaced it again. He started it up, left and again I went out to check the pilot. It had again gone out. I was able to start it this time and check periodically to make sure it stayed lit. When I went to bed, it was still lighted and so I thought it was fixed. Guess what, the next morning when I got up, the pilot was out and I could not get it to restart! I have called and left a message for the landlord. I believe he should get his money back on this water heater as I have been looking online and have found nothing but complaints on this product.

My family has spent nearly a week without hot water. This means that just to do dishes, we have to heat the water up on the stove. And taking a bath requires that we heat water up and take spit baths. I have 5 adults and 3 small children in our home and this is a nightmare. Each time they go bad, either the thermcoupler, or electric ignitor.Lowes has replaced the tanks a couple of times as it was determined that the tanks were no good. The last time I had one installed was 08-27-07. I still had to pay 195.96 for installation, which I think is ridiculous given it was the tank that went bad. There has also been controversy over the tank being installed in my double wide mobile home. Whirlpool states in their installation manual this tank is not for use in mobile homes. Lowes said it is not a mobile home, but a modular, and that it is safe as it is vented properly.
I am in the middle as I don't know who or what to believe and am not able to buy another tank or pay for labor to install it. I am also disabled and can not do these things for myself. I have had subsequent major water damage to my floors in the laundry room as a result of these tanks blowing out and water spuing everywhere. I don't know what to do. I feel that someone other than myself should have to not only replace the tank, but also repair the damage to my floors and walls in the laundry room . When I called Whirlpool yesterday, 12-28-08, I was told that my warrenty was void as the tank is in a mobile home.

I purchased a home in July of '08. We were told by the ex-owners that they installed a new hot water heater in March of '08. According to Whirlpool after they looked up my serial number they said it was purchased in November of '07. Either way, the hot water heater was not old. In the beginning of December of '08, the hot water heater went out (pilot light would not stay on). I called Whirlpool and they told me that the warranty does NOT transfer with new ownership. I was stunned that they would refuse to do anything for me when the hot water heater was only a year old. I ended up calling a plumber and they replaced the thermocouple, which costed me $300. It worked fine for about 12 hours and went out again. The plumbers came back (which by the way, were very good plumbers) and they told me the next step, which would be the gas valve. At this point I would be paying an additional $650. I decided that it would not be worth it for me to keep putting money into this hot water heater lemon. I bought a new hot water heater with a 10 year warranty that IS transferable and luckily the plumbers that I called put the $300 that I had already spent towards a new hot water heater.

Tomorrow we are going to give up and buy a new water heater and you can bet it won't be a Whirlpool. Actually we will never buy another Whirlpool product and will reccomend to all friends and family that they never buy a Whirlpool product. Its easy enough now days to check and see if off brands are made by Whirlpool and we will be very careful with future purchases. We have been screwed again by this company and didn't even get a kiss. I purchased a Whirlpool Energy Smart Flame Lock gas hot water heater in September '07. The control was defective on the new heater and Whirlpool sent a new one after much debate. The pilot went out this month (December '08). It took four days to get the issue resolved (Christmas was the second day and Whirlpool was not contacted on that day. They were, however on the other three days). The first person we spoke with could not fix the problem. Someone called later and told the plumber to bleed the gas line. Of course that did not work. After two hours of talking with various Whirlpool technicians on the 4th day without water, we got the pilot lit. The heater has a 12 year warranty. I am not optimistic that the controls can operate a year without servicing, let alone 12 years. This piece of junk replaced a water heater that lasted 25 years with no problem. Lowe's should stop selling this product.

After spending 3 days online with whirlpool calling tech support and dismantleing this thing 10 or 12 times, and paying $100 for a professional to come over a take a look at it , they agreed to send me a burner replacement kit. It appears that I was lied to as I spoke with an employee at another store and he told me that he has heard of problems with Whirlpool brand heaters, and also that Lowes was in the process of pulling mobile home hot water heaters from thier shelves because of issues with them. a little FYI for people in the market for a hot water heater... Much like many folks here I too have problems with a Whirlpool 40 gal Natural Gas Hot Water Heater purchased from Lowe's. I read some of the info about the class action suit, and it seems that either another one should be created or an update to the original one should be done.
As most reported, my experience was pretty bad from start to finish. Here's a quick recap: Purchased BFG1H4040T3NOV in 1/08. Installed incorrectly by Lowe's contractor (crossed hot pipes with cold). Unit was found to be defective also. 2/08 replacement hw heater installed. Periodically, throughout the year had minor issues. 11/08 - Pilot refused to light after hours of trying. Called Lowe's and they passed the buck on Whirlpool. Called Whirlpool and they shipped new gas valve. 11/11/08 had gas valve replaced. 11/26/08 Pilot went out and was able to relight it after several hours. Sent email to Whirlpool and got no response. 12/18/08 Pilot went out again and was not able to restore it. 12/19/08 Called Whirlpool again. After phone troubleshooting didn't work (technician wanted me to blow air in the pilot tube, WITHOUT turning off the gas). Again they are sending a replacement gas valve and again Sears is going to work on it. As many have remarked, being without Hot water for any amount of time can be detrimental. Each time Lowe's and Whirlpool tried to fix their errors, I was without Hot Water 4~5 days. Cumulatively, I've been without Hot Water for 3 weeks. Oftentimes my Hot Water Heater breaks on a Thursday or Friday, making part shipments delayed and service calls impossible until the next week. Much like many of you, I'M TIRED OF THIS. Lowe's and Whirlpool have completely lost my business. I've searched and searched for folks who were satisfied with their Hot Water Heaters, but have been unsuccessful. The installers, Sears technicians, and independant plumbers have all said that the Whirlpool Hot Water Heaters are junk. A.O. Smith comes highly recommended but they ain't cheap. Then again, after spending close to a $1000 for the Whirlpool and installation/repair costs, maybe A.O.Smith's $1200 price isn't so bad after all. Boiling water and cold showers are no substitute for a working hot water heater.

Apparently the thermocouple was so faulty that it had to really cool down before it would reopen.
Anyway I called the 800 number and the sent a new control unit for free (except for $14 shipping and they arranged for free labor from SEARS. It's working now - but from the reports above, I wonder how long it'll last. One weird thing - the only thermostate probe (which was removed) was still covered in the protective plastic sheath over the copper probe. So the the original part had been installed with this condom-like plastic cover on the probe. I can't help but think that was a sloppy installation and that plastic should have been removed. If I get a resolution from this complaint, it would be that Whirlpool pays me for the Hot Water Heater that doesn't work, Pay's me for an Electric 40 Gallon Heater (different Brand that I choose) pay's for the removal and replacement of a new different brand, and pay's for the Installation of the necessary electrical wiring upgrade to make it work. As I see it, that should run about $1500.00-$2000.00 I will never purchase a Whirlpool Product EVER AGAIN!

Called Lowes, they told me they couldn't help, I would have to call manufacturer. Called my plumber, they said they wouldn't touch whirlpool water heaters because the company was known to have allot of problems. Said if I got the parts they would come to replace. Called manufacturer and talked to someone who could barely speak English. They sent the wrong part. Lowe's plumber came and relit pilot light. Pilot light went out after one day. Called manufacturer again, she sent 2 replacement parts, that didn't arrive on the day they assured me they would. Lowe's contracter came this morning to repair; assured me it was fixed. NO HOT WATER TONIGHT. I am fed up. Have been without hot water for 2 wks. Don't think Lowe's will stand behind agreement. I am ready to call it an expensive lesson and buy a different brand. I am VERY UNHAPPY AND FRUSTRATED. Was not even aware there had been a class action suit filed. Lost out on that too. I will NEVER buy another whirlpool product. Always thought it was an upstanding, reliable company. Now I know better.

I talked with a installer about the hot water heaters and he told me they first off had bad thermocouples and right away they would break [overheat] to soon. Secondly I think the manufactures got got sloppy when they had to design a flame lock one with a care less attitude. There goes your quality out the window. I got me a new one early this year and it has a different thermocouple which will take more heat before it destroy itself. We will see?

I have a whirlpool hot water heater FG1J5040T3NOV. I PURCHASED IT IN 2006. The burner would ignite and then go out extinguishing the pilot. I called Whirlpool tech. They informed that the gas valve was bad and that they would send me a new one. Four days later I received the new valve. And it is the wrong valve for my heater. I have called two plumbers in NJ and they have refused to work on any whirlpool water heaters because they are so problematic and dangerous to operate?. I have now gone a week without hot water and have decided to replace the hot water heater with a new one. (Not a whirlpool.) I have now spent approximately 1700.00 dollars on hot water heaters (installed). When I purchased the whirlpool hot water heater I bought the twelve-year model so I would avoid any problems for quite some time. I also contacted LOWES. Their response was that this is a Whirlpool problem not theirs. After reading all the complaints on Consumer affairs regarding my hot water heater, and having the same experience as other consumers of this product, I decided to replace it.
Too think that they would send me a replacement part under warranty and expect the consumer to install it especially involving gas, is just negligent. After reading other posts on this site it seems also negligent that they would continuously send out the wrong part. If I hadnt called a plumber and tried to install it myself I think this could have been disastrous. Summary- 1: I bought a twelve-year 50 gallon gas whirlpool water heater at Lowes Model # FG1J5040T3NOV in 2006. 2: The Gas valve went bad in 2008 apparently due to a worn or defective part. Consensus seems to point to defective?. 3: Called Whirlpool They sent me the wrong part. 4: Called two plumbers in my area that refused to work on this product due to safety issues. Informing that these hot water heaters dangerous and should be recalled. 5: Called Lowes home improvements who told me there is nothing they could do? and gave me the # of Whirlpool. Unfortunate 6: $500.00 dollar lose for me. Thank You

I, too, have fallen victim to the perils of the infamous Whirlpool Flame Lock water heater. I purchased my new water heater from, yes, Lowe's Home Improvement, in Peoria, IL this past March 2008. I paid $419 for the product including the parts necessary to have it installed, and another $250 paid to the Lowe's installation department to bring the product to my home and install it. For the first couple of weeks, all seemed great. Then I started noticing fluctuations in the water temperature, especially when taking showers or washing dishes. I never questioned that the problem was with the water heater since it was brand new, so I continued to adjust the water up or down when necessary. On late Saturday, September 27, 2008, my water was virtually tepid, even when running the tap on the hottest setting. I went downstairs and discovered that the pilot light was out on the heater. After several attempts to re-ignite the pilot the reset button would not pop up when released, so I turned the dial to OFF and called Lowe's. I explained the situation and was told to call the number on the side of the tank. I was going to be gone Sunday, so I called Whirlpool on Monday, September 29th and explained the situation to the customer service representative, who asked a series of troubleshooting questions that I had already answered. I was told that I the control valve went bad and would need replaced. I told them that I only had the water heater since March, how can that be? I was told by the representative that I was lucky it had lasted 7 months, that most go out within 2 months. I was instructed that the kit would be overnighted to me, given an authorization number, and told to call an 800 number after I received the kit to schedule installation. The next day I received the part and called the number given to me...Sears!! But I bought the water heater at Lowe's!? Lowe's installed the water heater, so why is Sears fixing it?? Hmmm...

One year ago, I replaced my 15 year old, failing water heater that never gave me problems with a brand new Whirlpool Model BFG that has failed on me 2 times since I had it installed. It failed the first time less than one month of installing it. The pilot light will not stay lit. I called Whirlpool and they told me that the thermocouple was faulty. I had a tech out to install a new one, which didn't solve the problem. Whirlpool shipped me a new gas valve and made me pay for the shipping. I had the same tech out to install the gas valve. It worked great up until last week Thursday (Thanksgiving Day) with guests in town. Complete nightmare! The pilot light will not stay lit. I called Whirlpool on a Saturday and they said they'd ship me a new gas valve, but that I'd have to pay for shipping. I refused to pay for it since I paid for it the first time and shouldn't have had to since the product is under warranty. They waived the shipping fee and told me that they'd ship the part on Monday and I'd receive it by Tuesday. I asked to speak to a supervisor. They said one would call me back. Never called back. I called back at 6:30. Asked for a supervisor. They said one would call me back. I told them I'd wait on the line for one. The line disconnected after I'd been on hold for 45 minutes. I called back once more and waited for 30 minutes to talk to, FOR THE FIRST TIME, a rep in the USA (the rest were Indian with very thick accents reading from scripts). I explained my issue to the woman and she said that I can buy the part from Lowes and that Whirlpool will reimburse me. I asked what I should do about the part that I'm receiving tomorrow and she told me the order wasn't even closed yet. It wouldn't ship until tomorrow which means I wouldn't get it until Thursday or Friday. Now I have to go to Lowes to buy a gas gauge made by the same company that made the gas gauge that's been failing all along since Whirpool makes their products in such a way that you're forced to buy the faulty products they came with after those fail. I'm furious with this company. I'm shocked at the way they do busienss and even more shocked at how many other customers have been completely ripped off! I will never, ever buy another Whirlpool product.

(He has done this on other types in the past so it should have been no problem.) By chance I found this site and am going to take the information that one person said about the WC and have our propane folks come out and check that out. I called for a plumber today only to find just to get him here would be $169 to pull into the driveway today. My husband works 3rd and I work days so scheduling and sleeping times are always a problem. We had planned ahead and put this water heater in and now it is not working. I am hoping what that gentleman found is correct and that we will be spared these problems. My heart does go out to all of you who (thank you so much) shared your experiences as it may have just saved us some money we cannot afford. The hospital bills etc for my husband's stroke last month have started rolling in so to buy another water heater to install after just doing so this year is not something we would want to have to do. I agree with everyone that Lowes and Whirlpool should be totally ashamed of themselves and if you bought one of these, you should get some sort of compensation back since they were not able to inform the consumer of this in the first place thus should have immediately stopped selling these until the problem was taken care of.

Which I understand that the government made Whirlpool put out a retro kit to repair the FGxxxxx model and upgrade them to a BGxxxxxx. The thermocouple in the FGxxxxxx models have a left handed thread. Lowes is suppose to carry the adapters to convert this to a right hand thread but do they carry them? No. They use to carry them and they say they don't know if they will be getting them back in for stock. Whirlpool, on the other hand, gave me a hard time. They said I didn't register my hot water tank. They wanted other personal information which I think they didn't need. They wanted me to contact other Lowes stores to get the thermocouple adapter. Then they all of a sudden got confused about the model I was calling about and started to tell me that I would have to purchase the parts for repair ( the tank was still under warranty, only a year old). All this bs made me angry and I told them never mind. Needless to say, the tank didn't get fixed. I went out and bought a A O Smith hot water tank. My suggestion, DON'T BUY WHIRLPOOL hot water tanks. Like hundreds of others on this site, we purchased a defective whirlpool water heater. After 3 phone calls to Whirlpool customer service in India advising us to perform a variety of diagnostic tests that did nothing to fix our problem. We went on line and read hundreds of complaints. Many people tried the replacement thermocoupler kits with success. We went through 2 kits, the first of which caused a dangerous gas leak and the other which did not solve the problem. None of the replacement kits worked for anyone else either. After dealing with this issue for over a year and after yet another cold shower yesterday, my husband went to Lowe's and they told him to contact Whirlpool and get an RA#. With the RA# we will bring the water heater in tonight and they will give us a replacement water heater.
We called India this morning and got the run around again but I had my husband ask for a Manager. The Manager went through the motions again suggesting this and that kit, this and that test. We were persistent and demanded an RA# which the Manager did not give but he did escalate our complaint to Level 2 which then got us to a man named Bruce in the States. Bruce tried the same runaround telling us our water heater was not the model with problems and that we could pay shipping for yet another kit. We were not taking no for an answer and I informed Bruce that not only would we be contacting our attorney to sue for a new water heater but also pain and emotional suffering as I have arthritis in my back and cold showers are very painful. I also let Bruce know that I would be inviting all the people I could find on this site an many other sites to join me and my attorney in filing a class action suit. After several minutes on hold, Bruce got back on the phone and quite begrudgingly gave us an RA#. Bruce said our new water heater would have only a 1 year warranty and it would not include labor, will see about that down the road but tonight, I am pleased and relieved to say we are getting our new replacement water heater free of charge.

Yea, we are not alone. We have been fighting with our Whirlpool Waterheater Model FG...for over a month. Same issue: pilot light doesn't stay lit. We have tried all the troubleshooting tips. So every morning at 5:00 am, I set about on the mission of lighting the pilot light so that we can shower before work and school. I gave up on holding the Red reset button down for 10-15 minutes and jiggling the Gas Control button until the pilot light stayed lit.
HERE IS THE TRICK THAT WORKS: (1)HOLD 'RED' RESET BUTTON DOWN FOR AT LEAST ONE MINUTE. (2)WITH A HAMMER (THE BIGGER THE BETTER) TAP THE UPPER-LEFT CORNER OF THE METAL GAS VALVE BOX, JUST BELOW THE 'RED' RESET BUTTON. (3)TWO OR THREE GOOD HARD HITS WILL CAUSE THE PILOT LIGHT TO STAY LIT. (4)Turn the Gas Control knob to ON and reset the Temperate control dial. The WH unit works great from that point on, but we have to perform the ritual at least daily (and so far the house hasn't blown up;+)

In Nov '07, because my water heater broke, I purchased a Whirlpool gas water heater from Lowe's in Mechanicsburg, PA. Lowe's installed the appliance. On 16 Nov 08, I discovered I didn't have hot water. I called UGI who told me the pilot had gone out and informed me, the Whirlpool models have had problems in the past. I was hopeful that since I had just purchased mine a year ago, my model was defect free. On the morning of 17 Nov, I did some research on the web and discovered the 123 pages of complaints against Whirlpool concerning the water heaters. I became very discouraged. The evening of 17 Nov, I discovered, once again, that I had no hot water. I called Lowe's on 18 Nov and was told I had to contact Whirlpool. I spoke w/ someone at Whirlpool who told me the problem was either the thermostat or the thermal control. She said she could ship the replacement parts to arrive the next day. I had to pay shipping. The parts arrived on 19 Nov and UGI came to install the thermal control on 20 Nov. On the morning of 21 Nov, I had no hot water again. I went to Lowe's and, once again, they told me I had to contact Whirlpool to get an authorization for return. This time I spoke w/ someone, who I think was called Jack but since I could barely understand the individual, I could be wrong. I explained the situation to him and requested I be given an authorization for return. He told me I had to call a technician, whose number he was going to give me, to come fix the heat. When I asked why I wasn't given the number the first time, he said I probably said I was going to call a repair service myself. Nothing was mentioned during the first phone call about a service...I was merely told a part could be sent to me. Period. I asked Jack if my heater would be repaired today and he said yes, call the number. I called the phone number and I received an answering machine. This was 11:00 AM Friday, 21 Nov. It is now almost 1:00 and I haven't heard anything.
After the first the time pilot went out, I looked on the web and found 123 pages of complaints against Whirlpool concerning the water heater dating back to 2004. Why are they allowed to continue to sell the defective products?

Ours was purchased in 2003 and we have had a couple of problems with it over the years, but now it has completely quit. The pilot light will not stay lit at all. I called the 877-817-6750 and waited several minutes for a foreign lady to come on to help me. She said that a kit could be sent out the next day ($15.00 charge ) and that it had a manual for easy installation. So I said send it, since it is never fun to be without hot water. In the meantime I got on the computer and was dumbfounded to see the enormity of complaints about Lowes and Whirlpool.OMG people....that store needs to be boycotted for selling their junk product.I immediately called the store we bought from in Jackson, TN and asked him just how many complaints have they gotten about Whirlpool hot water heaters. Seems as though they have gotten several. He told me if the kit that we receive doesn't work, then they will make sure we get a new hot water heater.....ummmm,we'll see.And the story may continue...

We get the part put in and guess what? It still wouldn't work. My husband calls Lowes and talked to a gentleman there and he said to call Whirlpool and give them hell so my husband calls Whirlpool and after 5 times of getting a recording that said all reps are busy and the computer hanging up on him the 6th time he got an actual person the man at whirlpool said well the thermostats are going bad on them also we will send you one for free you just have to pay shipping so we paid out another 15.00 it is suppose to be here today they sold us a piece of crap that I keep having to get parts for and still not working and then to top it off they are nmaking us pay for shipment. We will get the thermostat installed I hope it works. I hope a lawyer sees this and picks up a civil suit cause I will be jumping on the bandwagon. First, I agree with ALL the posts. Sedond, I think Lowes should be reprimanded legally for selling this product. They are and have been aware that the Whirlpool Hot Water Heaters they are selling are junk.
Third, Whirlpool's website (in gray lettering) indicates that American Water Heater is the manufacturer for the HW Heaters - and if they sell them under their brandname they should be legally responsible for fixing (material and labor) these units without having to go to a third party. AND it should be for free if it's under the warranty. Lastly, I called American Hot Water Heater direct - 423-283-8000 and spoke to their warranty department. The young lady was very nice - told me there is a design flaw and all they can do right now is send out replacement parts --- the same parts that keep going bad. They have not figured out how to fix the thermocouple reset switch (the two wires - one black and one white) from crapping out...which in turn ruins the thermostat / gas valve which has to be replaced.

I have a three year old Kitchen Aid gas stove. About 1.5 years ago I used the self clean feature of the stove. Ten minutes into the cycle a circuit blew, the oven door locked and we were not able to use the stove again. I had to bring in a sevice guy (who I paid) who had to order a part from Whirlpool. He had to come back, install it and then charge me for the part and labour. Whirlpool said stuff it when I asked to be compensated. Fast forward 1 year later. I try to clean the oven again with the self clean feature. This is just the second time as I have been afraid to engage this feature due to my first experience. Nevertheless I throw caution to the wind and guess what 15 minutes into the self clean the same circuit blows, the stove locks and can't use the stove. I call the repair man. He opens the stove, takes out the dead part and writes to Whirpool to tell them that we have a product defect. Whirlpool says: so what. The stove is out of warranty. I have now had to pay for the repair guy to come back to instal a defective part for the second time. I can't use this feature as it doesn't work and costs me money every time I touch the button. The oven will now become a grease pit because Whirlpool won't do the right thing, admit there is a defect and give me a part that works or a new stove.

We bought a Whirlpool hot water heater at Lowe's in 2004. In a couple of years the thermcoupler went out and we had to get a new one. Four more years down the line another one went out. When we waited 2 days for the part to get here and paid 30.00 for the overnight delivery, that was the pits. Then that was not even the part we needed and nobody in town had either of the parts. So i called Whirlpool and they were so uncaring that we had been out of hot water already for 4 days and they wanted us to wait another 3 for them to ship us the other part. I fussed so much that they finally waived the 30.oo shipping fee. Then I got on the internet and found zillions of people who were just as or more ticked off than I was at Lowe's and Whirlpool. So, we decided to go to Lowe's and see if they would at least make us a deal on another hot water heater and they were just as unconcerned as Whirlpool. They only had the whirlpool hot water heaters and a couple of bosch. So, we left there and went to Sears where the man told us he had even heard on cnn that there was a recall on Whirlpool hot water heaters. We mentioned this to Lowe's and to Whirlpool and they acted like we were crazy. Some kind of consequence needs to happen to these two companies for carrying out such a scam and that's what it is a scam!!!!!!!!!

He had been through this many, many times. After an hour without success, I decided to wait and see what the plumber found. When he arrived later in the day, he determined that the controls on the heater weren't registering correctly and caused the water to overheat and release the relief valve. He installed a new relief valve as well as a pressure expansion tank to prevent futher problems. I contacted Whirlpool and they overnighted a new control. The plumber returned on Wednesday and installed the parts. Total bill= $335.00. Returned home from work 3 hours later to find basement flooded again. Tried to contact Whilrpool, was on hold for hours...spent hours drying up the basement only to find that the carpet in the family room and an extra bedroom has been ruined. Found mold beginning on one wall. Over 80 gallons of hot water dumped twice in 4 days can do that!! Called Lowes but there is nothing that they can do...can't get thru to Whirlpool...! Had plumber come back on Thursday and remove my piece of junk and install a quality heater. Replacement cost= $780.00. So the Whirlpool water heater cost 300.00, the first plumber bill was 335.00 and the new water heater was $780.00 for a total experience of $1,415.00. Never purchasing another Whirlpool product or visiting Lowe's....Priceless!

I'm just adding my name to the list, but same as everyone else here.
I purchased two Whirlpool hot water heaters at the same time, and they have both acted the same way. (1). Thermostat quickly becomes unable to regulate the water within ~5-10 degrees. (2). One of the various poorly made safety shutoffs fails, costing hundreds to fix if you have it done (and Whirlpool seems to try to make it hard to fix it on your own because, unlike other water heaters of this type, the Whirlpool is difficult to disassemble, even to replace the thermo-couple).

This is an update on our Whirlpool American Water Heater situation (model BFG1J5040T3NOV). After my husband got up this morning and I told him about what a lemon this water heater was that we bought and showed him the pages of complaints about it, we decided instead of wasting our time with replacing parts and the repairs not taking care of the problem to request a full replacement of the water heater from Lowes. We called Lowes in Fairview Hts, Illinois and talked with a store manager and strongly voiced our dissatisfaction with this water heater. We also mentioned the pages of consumer complaints about this model and that we were sold this product with Lowes knowing about the problems it had. The manager agreed to exchange our water heater for a new one if we disconnected it and brought it in ourselves. So that's what we did. We have hooked up the replacement and it is heating up the water right now. The manager at Lowes said that they have cleared their stock of the water heaters that were having all the problems. So we shall wait and see if this water heater lasts any longer than the one it replaced (it was 2 weeks shy of a year when it went bad)-------same model---so it is pretty iffy based on what I've read from others. Our first water heater that came with our house was an A.O.Smith. It heated perfectly for 9 years and then rusted out and flooded our basement. That I can deal with but making a product with junk parts and fleecing consumers with it is bad business---if Whirlpool continues to make junk then whatever bad business comes their way they brought it on themselves.

Wednesday night before Thanksgiving 2007 our water heater rusted out and flooded the basement. After Thanksgiving (11-23-07) we purchased and had Lowes install a Whirlpool American Water Heater model BFG1J5040T3NOV. It worked perfectly until election day 11-04-08. The pilot light went out and will not stay lit after re-lighting several times. Called Lowes today (11-05-08) and got the number for Whirlpool. Called Whirlpool and they are sending at no cost a new Gas Out Valve. I also got from Whirlpool a labor authorization number and a phone number to call Sears for the installation when the part arrives---in our area Sears is authorized to work on Whirlpool's. In the process of calling Whirlpool I learned about the flamelocksupport.com website. I went ahead and ordered the replacement kit because from the litany of complaints this will inevitably have to be replaced. This so far is only costing me $5. What bites is that we forked out $900 to Lowes for this water heater and they knowingly sold us this piece of defective junk. I will update after the replacement parts are installed. If problems continue I will contact Fox2St.Louis news and get the word out about this. I have learned a great lesson from this and I hope I can prevent someone else from making the same mistake.

After a frustrating afternoon. I decided I HAD HAD ENOUGH !!!! I would NOT pay $ 25.00 for shipping on another 1 month part. I called my plumber and told him to go to a local retailer and get me an AO Smith water tank. He unhooked the Whirlpoop Tank and we loaded it on my husbands truck. So on Sunday October 26th I walked in Lowes with a 4 year old (warrantied for 6 years)Whirlpool Water Tank and a receipt. Of course first thing the employee said to me was I needed to call the 1- 800 number. I calmly explained to her the entire story. I told her I was NOT satisfied with this product and wanted a FULL REFUND. She got on the phone and called someone ..I am assuming it was a manager of some sort. She was given a code to put in register. I gladly took from her my FULL REFUND of $ 246.24. So I came back to this site to tell you ALL if you have your RECEIPT DO NOT be afraid to RETURN the TANK to the store no matter how many YEARS have passed. If we ALL do RETURNS I guess Lowes might consider a different named water tank to sell in their stores. Good Luck to all of you !!! We need to fight back !!

Bought a Whirlpool 40-gallon water heater from Lowes on 12/26/07. Old one went out and quickly went out an bought this one. After emergency install costs, I paid nearly $1000. Exactly 10 months later, I'm having the same problem everyone else is having. (Apparently, I'm lucky it lasted as long as it did) The pilot light won't stay lit. Once in a great while, and a LOT of effort, it does stay lit, but once the burner goes out, so will the pilot light. I called the toll-free number on the tank. The first call they helped me light the pilot again. An hour later, the phone number had difficulties and couldn't process my call. (they have caller ID - they knew who I was when I later got through) When I finally got through, and said the pilot goes out with the burner, they said my warranty will cover parts and labor and they will overnight a part. (gas valve) I called Saturday night, so the part can't get sent until Monday, arriving Tuesday, and the service getting done Wednesday. So I'm without hot water with a family of 4 until late Wednesday. From what I've read, this is a temporary fix, if it fixes it at all. I wouldn't dought if the service person can't get the pilot light to light and tells me another part will have to be ordered. If it does work, it's a timebomb waiting to break down again. We're considering saving up another $1000 just to get one that we can trust. I think that's a horrible thing to have to consider, being we've had this thing for less than a year.

Additionally, they were going to charge $15 for shipping until I asked to speak to a supervisor and then the customer service rep said she would waive the shipping fee. This company is ridiculous! They are making substandard water heaters and then expect customers to pay over and over to keep them working. I have spent several hundred dollars on water heaters in the past 3-4 years; not to mention the headache of not having hot water for extended periods of time. I've been burned twice now and will never own a Whirlpool appliance again. The fact that their water heaters are poorly made is bad enough, but when you add terrible customer service to the mix, it makes for a really bad customer experience. Mine is not an isolated experience either. I wish someone would hold Whirlpool responsible for the problems with the water heaters that are causing customers so many problems. Also, the original thermocouple that came in the tank and the new replacment thermocouple do not have the thicker pregnant looking section of thermocouple tube that houses the internal thermal fuse that was going out and causing a lot of the defective thermocouple problems. On September 20th, 2008, the pilot light went out. The thermocouple and gas valve were replaced. One month later the pilot light went out again. Whirlpool overnighted a new gas valve and thermocouple. They were installed and the pilot light still will not stay lit. Based on the repairman's suggestions I asked Whirlpool to send a new manifold door assembly and scheduled a third day for service work. Whirlpool said if this did not work, then I could call them back and they would replace the water heater. I am aware that a class action for this very problem was just settled earlier this year. However, it is clear that many outside of that class, including myself, continue to have the exact same problem with this heater and it is very likely that another class action seeking water heater replacement cost (not just a retrofit kit) is warranted. I intend to pursue all available legal remedies to recover my costs and obtain a new water heater that is NOT a Whirlpool water heater.

I believed I was buying a quality brand, and I wish I would have researched this site before I bought it. Purchased a top of the line whirlpool flame lock water heater from Lowe's approximately 11 months ago. The water heater is known to be defective, a class action lawsuit is currently pending. This will be the second time I will have to have this piece of garbage serviced due to the pilot not working. With this next service call, I will have paid more for the repairs than the original cost of the tank.

Out of pocket $140 from last service call and will have to incur another who knows how much. They're sending me a part "New Gas Valve".. That will be here tomorrow..Will see... To get this known defect fixed again. This system is so unreliable that I'm worried about what else it may do, such as leak through my ceilings or catch fire. I think that this co. should be looked into before someone gets hurt, I see a lot of complaints here. Don't have a week to read them all...

We have bought two water heaters in the last two years from Lowes and they both went out and I am tired of spending money we do not have. They are not any good. We have spent almost 1,000.00 in the last two years. I will never buy another Whirlpool product.

Encountered similar problems with the pilot light staying lit, again!!! Suggest that if you cannot resolve the problem with Whirlpool or the store where purchased that you contact your local BBB and your state Attorney General. I am in the process of doing that at this time.

I bought a 40-gal. Whirlpool water heater 2 years ago. Since then, I have had to have it serviced twice. One time for a faulty gas valve and once for a rebuild kit that I still had to pay a technician to install. I bought this new for $300.00 and have put another $300.00 into repairs in only 2 years.

Purchased a Whirlpool Flame Lock 50 gal natural gas hot water Heater from Lowe's store in north San Antonio on 5/10/2008 (Model No. BFG1H5040T3NOV). Cold water showers started on 10/19/2008. Tested thermocoupler per user manual and found defective (only 7 mV instead of 12 mV minimum when pilot lit with red button down). Read about everyone else's woes regarding these heaters last night (wish if I had known and/or Lowe's would have told me when I bought this in May 2008). Bought 3 thermocouples today from Lowe's and installed 1st - it did not work and failed the 12 mV test. Tried 2nd and it passed mV test. Pilot stayed lit for one heating of the water tank. Now it will not stay lit and back to cold water!

E-mailed Whirlpool last night to register complaint. Received a call from American Water Heater Co. (Tennessee tank manufacturer for Whirlpool) today and they said that they were going to overnight a new replacement control valve. They gave me a number to call to schedule service and a reference number to pay for the service call. The service company turned out to be Sears who took my info and then told me that they used a 3rd party service provider in my area. They said that this service provider would call me within 24 hrs to schedule a service call. Sears would not tell me who the service company is and I am now waiting for a phone call from some company that I don't know who they are to (hopefully) get my valve replaced when it (hopefully) arrives. And taking cold showers everyday until all of this happens in the hopes that this new replacement valve will solve all of these problems.

Old water heater (Rheem) lasted 11 years with no problems until it leaked. This one is only 5 months and we get cold showers and a lot of wasted time messing with it (which means that I am not earning a living since self-employed and can't get work done having to mess with this defective product).

PLEASE, PLEASE - if any class action suits filed in Texas against Lowe's and/or Whirlpool count me in. I just want the thing replaced with a different brand (Rheem) at NO COST TO ME!!

Bought water heater at Lowe's 6/01/08. It broke down, not hot water. Had someone look at it. Relit pilot light, lasted 1 day. Had to wait a week, because the person who helped me with it is out of town. He then replaces the thermocouple that lasted one day. Now I have no hot water again. I called the number on the tank, could not understand a word the person was saying. They were supposed to give me the number to Sears for repair. They gave me DHL's number, so I had to call back and wait on hold again. Got the right number, called Sears. They said they had to know when my part would be in. Had to call Whirlpool back for the 3rd time to find out when the part is coming.

Now I have to wait for the part then try to get Sears to come out! I had the same stupid issues with poor workmanship with a Whirlpool fridge that they did not stand behind. And I said I would never buy a Whirlpool again. Unfortunately, I was out of town and just had someone take care of this tank for me. Didn't pay much attention to the brand but when I had this problem, I knew it would be a royal pain, just like the fridge was. How do they get away with this all the time? I will be way more careful to NEVER buy Whirlpool again. It is the only brand that I have ever had any problems with. And they do not care if you are upset, if you never buy their product again. Horrible customer service!

The product number BTG1F4034T3NOV was purchased on February 26th,2008 and I've had to replace the thermostat couple and gas valve because the pilot was not staying lit. And it is only October 19, 2008. The replacement parts are not working now. I am having difficulty contacting Whirlpool and filing a refund claim for the parts replaced and for the entire water tank unit. I want my money back so I can purchase a better working appliance.

My entire family are suffering with mental and physical and financial hardship related to this product. We have missed work for appointments relating to the repair work needed. We have had to pay additional cost like renting hotel rooms to shower for work and school. And to wash clothes outside the home on separate occasions. I just spent an additional costs today for 2 replacement parts, and am being charged another cost for installation again. I have to carry my dirty laundry out with me and get it washed for school and work this week, and I'm personally suffering severe back/neck pain and pelvic pain and a great amount of anxiety over this entire ordeal.

The first one I ordered the part but what good is that when the tenant cannot go days without hot water. After that, 2 more went bad I tried to use the part it didn't work either. The tanks were less than 2 years old!!! What a rip off. My plumber said better to replace and be done with the problem.

Saturday, labor day weekend, our Whirlpool hot water heater went out. Got it restarted, but soon quit again. Called Lowes (where we bought it 10 months before) referred to an 800 number. Its a holiday weekend, so we were willing to pay ourselves. Called a service company - they don't have parts - gave us the same 800 number. Called them, go through steps to re-lighting including hooking a couple of wires together with a paper clip. End result - they'll send a part, which can't be shipped until Tuesday to arrive Wed. Part arrives Wed, its the pilot light ensemble. Manage to get it installed after prying out the old piece. No difference. Call the 800#, try the same things again, still won't light. When we get to a point where it beyond my skills and equipment.

THEN I get a authorization number and phone number for a technician. Its about 7:00 am, but tech can't come out until the next day. Tech arrives, has NEVER seen that part shipped out. Its always been the gas control part, replaces that and everything work. Except next day, slight smell of gas. Service company can't send anybody out for a day or 2, so have the gas company come out is a slight leak on the connection. BUT the part also leaks gas around the control knob. So have to have the tech come out again and replace the part. After this started is when I find out about the previous recall issues. Class action lawsuit settles just BEFORE I buy my water heater at Lowes. So I'm pretty unhappy with Lowes for continuing to sell this crap with known issues. Nor Whirlpool (obviously). Probably won't EVER buy an appliance from them again.

I purchased a WHIRLPOOL natural Gas Water Heater at Lowe's approx. 3 years ago. It has a 7-year warranty on parts. The pilot light went out today without warning or other previous problems. The gas company sent a tech out to relight the pilot. He said he has seen a bunch of Whirlpool water heaters purchased from Lowe's with the same problem. And like the others, he could not relight the pilot. He said it might be the thermocoupling and suggested I call Whirlpool's 800 number pasted on the side of the tank.

The number put me in touch with a fellow in India. India! After answering a bunch of questions, he said I needed a part he could send me via Fed-Ex. Since it was a weekend, the soonest he could promise delivery was Tuesday... and there would be a $17 delivery fee. He THEN said Lowe's carries the replacement part and do not charge for it. I called Lowe's. The man I spoke with said they didn't have the specific kit. He was nice enough to call four stores in the surrounding area and actually called me back, having located one at a store 25 miles distant. I immediately drove to the store, picked up the part and upon arriving at home, read the instructions, removed the defective part and installed the redesigned, new one- being careful to follow the instructions to the letter.

Then, the moment of truth. NO PILOT. So, removed the entire assembly and carefully reinstalled it. Because I have had spine surgery, heart surgery and rotator cuff surgery within the past fourteen months, I had to take several breaks. The project, including the time with the gas company tech, the Indian service advisor, the trip to Lowe's and two installations was about four hours. I still don't have a pilot light. I don't give up easily, so I went on line and found this website, with more (same) complaints than I care to count. I was shocked. I don't know if these water heaters are made in China, and I don't really care.

When I made my purchase at Lowe's, I thought I was getting a quality Whirlpool product. After all, it's a name I grew up with. I've had Whirlpool washers, dryers and refrigerators. Never a problem out of the ordinary - until this experience. For Whirlpool to be using non-American Speaking Service Advisors is a real eye opener. Also, Lowe's should be ashamed of itself (as if large corporations are capable of that). I paid Lowe's to install the original water heater and now they were handing me a box with a replacement part that required removing and replacing gas lines. A sobering proposal. Oh sure, they give the usual legal cautions. Hire a pro if you don't know what you're doing, etc. But come on, hire a plumber for what - probably near the cost of a new water heater. Anyway, I just want to add my two cents, that LOWE'S and WHIRLPOOL have a serious problem. May God bless the attorney who decides to take on a class action lawsuit against them. I hope no one has been injured as a result of a incorrect installation. I feel victimized.

We purchased a Whirlpool water heater Model # BFG1F404053NOV in March of this year. We have been without hot water for over a week. We had a plumber come by. He knew when he walked in the door what the problem was - it was a Whirlpool. He told us about the class action suit. He ordered a thermocouple thinking that was the problem. We waited for the part, but that wasn't the problem. He said it's probably the gas valve. He would order one from Whirlpool, we'd have to wait again.

I called Whirlpool. Was told I would have to get the part from Lowe's, then call Sears to have it installed. Lowe's does not have the part. At this point after reading about Whirlpools problems, I am ready to buy another water heater (not a Whirlpool). I'm tired of being without hot water. If there is a class action suit count me in.

Well, where to begin. I purchased a brand new home in 2005. The contractor used appliances from Lowe's. Needless to say, he also installed their piece of JUNK WATER HEATER. About a year later, we started having trouble with the water heater going out. After many issues, my repair guy pulled the unit, took it back to Lowe's and came back with, what I thought was, a new unit.

The new unit (BFG1F4040SNOV) worked for a couple of months before we started experiencing the SAME PROBLEMS we had before. However this time when I CALLED WHIRLPOOL VIA INDIA, after providing the serial number to the new unit, I was told it belonged to a person in Michigan, LOL, and I must provide the PROOF OF PURCHASE before they would send me the junk replacement parts. What I want everyone to know is, these guys are taking in defective units and sending them out as new heaters. If this isn't the case, how would my replacement unit be assigned to someone else.
