About U-Pack
U-Pack is a flexible moving company specializing in long-distance moves across North America. It’s an economical option for moving 150 miles or more, but the company doesn’t offer local moving services. The company has two types of equipment and completes most moves in four to six business days. Storage is available at U-Pack’s secure service centers.
Since U-Pack customers pack and load their goods themselves, the company is classed as a freight forwarder rather than as a motor carrier or household goods carrier with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT).
- Free, instant quotes online — no email required
- Only pay for the trailer space you use
- Typical delivery in under a week
- Must provide your own lock
- Broad delivery window unless you pay extra
- Local moves unavailable

What services does U-Pack offer?
U-Pack offers budget-friendly storage containers, trailers and professional drivers for moves of at least 150 miles. It specializes in military moves, cross-country trips, job relocation, senior moves, student moves and any interstate move farther than 150 miles.
U-Pack’s equipment options include trailers for larger homes and ReloCubes, which are single-size containers that can fit approximately one room of furniture and boxes. With either option, U-Pack gives you three days to pack your things and three days to unload — it doesn’t offer loading, unloading or packing services.
U-Pack also offers storage at its secure service centers if you need time before retrieving your belongings.
How does U-Pack work?
Here’s the process of moving with U-Pack:
- When you rent a trailer or ReloCube, U-Pack delivers the container or trailer and gives you up to three business days to load.
- Once your shipment is ready to go, U-Pack picks it up and drives it to your long-distance destination or to a storage facility.
- The shipment may be delivered within a broad delivery window, or you can select Guaranteed Delivery so you know the exact date your shipment will be delivered — and even the one- or two-hour delivery window.
- Delivery may be door-to-door, or if parking is limited at one of your addresses, the shipment can be loaded or unloaded at a local U-Pack service center. This option can reduce costs by up to $300.
How much does U-Pack cost?
U-Pack charges for the use of a trailer or a ReloCube, as well as transport and storage. Its prices are based on the amount of space you need, the distance and date of your move, and the length of storage. Notably, with the trailer option, you only pay for the linear feet your items occupy, rather than the full trailer.
U-Pack’s website offers free instant quotes (you can also call an agent to work out details) and booking. This is a nonbinding estimate, and you won’t be charged until the shipment is picked up, so the final cost could be higher or lower than the original quote depending on whether you need more or less storage than you requested.
If you're a student, senior, military service member or veteran, call to ask a U-Pack representative about getting a discount or enter a discount code for online reservations. You can also save $25 just by booking online.
Here, we’ve compiled some sample trailer and ReloCube pricing for a standard two-bedroom home or apartment, booked one month in advance. These quotes were sourced directly from U-Pack. Add-on items, such as extra day charges or the guaranteed delivery fee, will increase the cost.
| Move distance | Estimated price (ReloCube) | Estimated price (trailer) |
| Chicago to Denver | $2,860 | $2,592 |
| Dallas to Phoenix | $3,654 | $3,130 |
| Boston to Atlanta | $4,590 | $3,628 |
FAQ
How big is a U-Pack ReloCube?
A ReloCube is about 330 cubic feet and is designed to fit all furniture and moving boxes from one large room.
How long does it take U-Pack to deliver?
It usually takes U-Pack four to six days to deliver your things.
How reliable is U-Pack for long-distance moves?
U-Pack is generally considered reliable for long-distance moves, with roughly two-thirds of ConsumerAffairs reviewers rating the company at four or five stars. Positive customer reviews often cite timely delivery and good customer service.
Is U-Pack good for cross-country moves?
Yes, U-Pack is designed specifically for long-distance and cross-country moves, typically over 150 miles. Its “you pack, they drive” model can be a cost-effective option if you’re comfortable handling loading and unloading yourself.
Does U-Pack offer packing services?
No, U-Pack does not offer packing services. You’re responsible for packing, loading and unloading your belongings, and you’ll need to purchase your own packing materials separately.
Is U-Pack safe for storage?
U-Pack offers secure storage options, with containers and trailers that can be locked by the customer and secured during transit and storage. While it includes basic protection, coverage may be more limited than full-service movers, so additional protection may be worth considering.
Is U-Pack insured?
U-Pack offers carrier negligence liability coverage of 10 cents per pound. Note that this is below the minimum liability coverage of 60 cents per pound required for moving companies. This is because U-Pack is registered as a freight forwarder rather than a household goods motor carrier.
For a fee of $75 to $175, you can increase the amount of negligence coverage. U-Pack also provides catastrophic loss coverage of $3.00 per pound. The company’s claims process is fairly simple: First, you email U-Pack to open a claim, then the company sends you a form to submit along with documentation.
Still have questions?
Is U-Pack worth it?
U-Pack can be more affordable than a full-service moving company, and it’s transparent about its fees. The company offers fast delivery and charges only for the storage you use. Overall, we think U-Pack is a good option if you’re looking for an easy long-distance moving solution and want to avoid hidden costs.
