How Safe Step Stairlift works
Safe Step Stairlift offers indoor and outdoor stair lifts across the U.S. To get started, you request a free quote and schedule an in-home consultation. A design consultant assesses your staircase, reviews your needs and helps determine which lift is the right fit.
Safe Step stair lifts are installed by trained professionals and attach directly to the stairs instead of the wall. Most installations can be completed in one day, though outdoor installations may take longer depending on weather conditions and where the lift is mounted. Safe Step only offers straight stair lifts, but it may be able to install multiple lifts for staircases with landings or turns.
Safe Step Stairlift products
Safe Step offers three basic products:
- Indoor stair lift: Safe Step’s indoor stair lift features a low-profile track that attaches directly to the stairs, rather than the wall. It’s equipped with quality-of-life features like a soft start and stop and battery backup that can provide up to 20 trips during a power outage.
- Outdoor stair lift: Safe Step’s outdoor stair lifts are weather-resistant and feature a solar panel to help provide power. The outdoor lift’s battery backup provides more than 40 round-trip rides during power outages. Like the indoor stair lift, it features a swivel seat, smooth start and stop, and remote controls for easy operation.
- Cargo lift: The cargo lift option replaces the seat with a heavy-duty tray to help carry items up the stairs. It’s targeted toward people who can navigate stairs themselves but may need assistance carrying objects up and down safely. It has the same weight and battery capacity as the indoor stair lift.
All Safe Step stair lifts support up to 350 lbs. Most Safe Step stair lifts can be installed in one day, though outdoor installations may take longer depending on weather conditions and the location of the lift.
One important thing to keep in mind: Safe Step only offers straight stair lifts. If you have a staircase with corners, the team can install multiple lifts, but if your staircase is curved, your options might be more limited. In these cases, a company design specialist can help you determine whether Safe Step is the right choice.
Safe Step Stairlift costs
Safe Step Stairlift doesn’t advertise prices, but in general, most stair lifts cost between $2,000 and $15,000. To get an exact quote, you’ll need to contact the company and schedule a consultation.
The main factors that impact stair lift costs are the length and complexity of the staircase, as well as optional features such as cargo trays.
Many of the features that normally drive up the cost of a stair lift are included by default at Safe Step. For example, extras like swivel seats, folding footrests and remote controls come standard. Installation is also included in the base price, and some models include a limited lifetime warranty on all parts for as long as you own your home.
Safe Step Stairlift warranties and guarantees
Safe Step Stairlift offers several warranties, depending on the specific product you purchase:
- Indoor stair lifts and cargo lifts: Both come with limited lifetime warranties on all parts as well as two-year warranties on batteries.
- Outdoor stair lifts: These lifts come with a more restrictive warranty. The drivetrain is covered for three years, while other parts, like chairs and footrests, are covered for two years. The battery on outdoor models is covered for one year.
Shipping costs, outside modifications, damage caused by misuse and alterations by anyone other than the dealer aren’t covered under the Safe Step warranty.

The stairlift works flawlessly. I am finally able to traverse my house like I should. I was thinking of selling my home due to not being able to get up my stairs. The lift works well with no issues. I have had multiple surgeries making it impossible to climb the stairs. This lift has improved my quality of life so much. I wasn't able to get to the 2nd floor of my home for a while now. Now I am able to without the worry of falling. My family can now not worry. Cody was great with everything. Very frustrated with this company- recent stairlift install was a failure and safety hazard with screws coming loose and base shaking after exactly two times of using it on the date of install. Also, the safety belt is very hard to unlatch, requiring strong hands and dexterity to avoid being trapped in the chair if you are alone without help to release it.

We purchased a stairlift from Safe Step in March 26. In July it stopped working. We made several calls for service plus I emailed them. It’s been 5 weeks and no response from the company. It’s been a terrible time as we are both disabled. I am sorry I purchased from Safe Step. The service is unbelievably bad.

From the install on 8/4/2025, the Safe Step stairlift gave us issues. It was very noisy. Someone came out, added oil to a new chair but was still noisy. The foot plate and seat wouldn't stay up. And after 9 months, the chair stopped working completely. My mother @ age 85 had to climb stairs for 3 weeks until someone came only to tell us that the computer board was bad. We have since moved to another house. Safe Step wouldn't send someone to move the chair to our new location. We had to get the movers to do it. Now we have a stair lift that we're making payments for that's sitting in the garage. Safe Step preys on the elderly. . We can't get them on the phone to complain to them. This must stop.

Very loud and squeaks when operating. Takes up 1/3 of staircase which doesn't leave much room for anyone not using stair chair. Does not swivel around corner as told it would when purchased. Very unhappy.
