How does a Kinetico water softener work?

Kinetico water softeners are salt-based and completely powered by moving water. These products help remove calcium and magnesium from your local tap water. Kinetico works with factory-certified, local specialists that offer consultation appointments and a free water test. These local dealers also handle the installation process.

Kinetico does not list prices on its website — you must contact a local retailer. The company sells three softeners: the Essential Series, Signature Series and Premium Series. The Signature and Premium series offer 24/7 soft water. Speak with your local specialist to determine the best softener for your home, budget and lifestyle.

Kinetico also sells water filtration systems, including reverse osmosis systems. These products are designed to ensure your water is safe to drink while removing bad smells and taste.

How much does a Kinetico water softener cost?

Kinetico offers three water softener series at three different price points, typically ranging from $500 to $5,000. The Essential Series is its most affordable model and offers limited water softening services. The Signature and Premium series offer 24/7 water softening and can handle harder water, higher capacity and other functions.

Exact prices are not available on the company’s website and are determined by local, third-party Kinetico dealers. Specialists offer in-home consultations and can provide a free water test to determine which water softener is right for your home and budget. Kinetico specialists are trained and perform installation services.

Kinetico FAQ

How long does a Kinetico water softener last?

Water softeners typically last between 10 and 15 years. Due to Kinetico’s higher quality, your water softener’s life span could extend to 20 or more years.

Do Kinetico water softeners need maintenance?

Kinetico water softeners are made to be low maintenance and use a non-electric design. Water softeners require new salt to be added periodically.

What kind of salt does the Kinetic water softener use?

Kinetico water softeners use evaporated salt, which can be bought in the form of pellets, cubes or blocks. Evaporated salt is the purest type of sodium chloride (table salt). Avoid using lesser-grade salts or rock salt because foreign particles can lead to maintenance and service issues.

Do Kinetico water softeners have a warranty?

Yes, Kinetico water softeners have product-specific warranties if they are installed by a Kinetico specialist. Warranties stay with the water softener and transfer to the next owner of your house.

Still have questions?

Are Kinetico water softeners worth the money?

Kinetico water softeners are non-electric, built to last and made for efficiency. Kinetico softeners can use 70% less salt than other brands. The company partners with local specialists, which can make it difficult to determine the price of the softener and installation. If you’re looking for a high-quality, low-maintenance water softener or filtration system, however, Kinetico is a strong option.

We were doing a remodel for the two showers, all of our vanities, sinks, toilets, and all the plumbing fixtures, and one of the things that my wife and I decided was that we did not want to have the staining and the degradation from the hard water on all of our new tile showers and fixtures. Also, my daughter is now 11 years old, and she cares a lot more about her hair than she ever has.

I'm a contractor in town, and we have a relationship with Hoffman Water. I called them, told them about what we were thinking of doing, and he told us to go with Kinetico. We had them install the system, and it does its thing. It's performing its duties as advertised. Both of the girls in my house have said they use less products, less conditioner. They don't feel like they have to blow dry their hair. They like the water.

I don't have to do anything to the system except put salt in it. Once a month, I'll open the lid and see if there's salt in there. Also, the size of the Kinetico system is nice. It's a lot smaller than others, and that made it a lot easier for us to fit it where we needed to. It's a 1970s house, and they didn't build utility rings for all the flagship stuff that we have now. Being a contractor, I've seen other systems that are much bigger. Hoffman Water has also been really good about servicing. They'll call every once a while. I've been very happy with the service.

The system is expensive but it's kind of a buy once, try once when you're dealing with something in your house that has to do with water. That was an easier choice for me. It goes back to all those nice fixtures that I put in our house. I don't want those getting clogged up with whatever's coming through. Putting that filter on and using the soft water, starting with the water test was what sold me. We're on city water and once Hoffman tested it, we were shocked to see how hard it is.

Kinetico has just been fabulous. I had a relatively expensive whole-house reverse osmosis system put in, and they've been really great at being responsive to issues that have arisen with it from time to time, like replacing a pump and those kinds of things.

At the beginning, the salesperson was very knowledgeable. She was great. But what was interesting about it was that we tested water from our old well to determine what equipment we would need when we got the whole system up and running. And it turned out that the new well had tapped into an aquifer that was even harder than the initial one. So, we had to upgrade all of our equipment, and Kinetico was on top of it. They took the old equipment back and just had us pay for the increase in price for bigger equipment to handle the harder water. They were super easy to work with when we kind of hit a little bump.

With the whole-house reverse osmosis system, the water's perfect. There's no smell. There are no residuals. There's no problem. It is an expensive system to install, and it requires a relatively decent expenditure every two years, roughly, to change the RO filter, but other than that, it operates quite well. I would definitely recommend them. They do an excellent job of standing behind the equipment that they sell and service.

The people in the Facebook group for my neighborhood were talking about the different systems that they all had. There were a few that had Kinetico and they were really happy with it. I've been wanting a water softener for a while now because most of my friends all have it. When the water dried up on the faucets, you could see it become really scaly. We have hard water. We decided to go with Kinetico, not only because of the Facebook group, but also because of the guy who was there. He went through his presentation, and I liked it.

From beginning to end, my experience was very easy. It was very clear what I was getting and why it may be more expensive. When my parents came over to visit, my dad noticed a difference. Sometimes he gets eczema or psoriasis on his scalp, and he said, "You know what? It feels better." When he went back home in Houston, he said that he could feel it aggravated him, so he noticed the difference when he came to our house. My kids have sensitive skin, so I noticed it on their skin as well. Having a water softener made a difference.

I like the fact that it has the shutoff valve, where if I need to turn it off or have to turn off the water for the house for whatever reason, I don't have to go all the way outside and do it manually. I could do it from that system. They told me initially I'd probably have to do one big salt bag a month, but I don't. It's less than that. The maintenance is not difficult at all. It's super easy. Kinetico is more expensive than others. But I got a better system and quality. Other people have a bunch of issues, so they have to pay for replacement parts. At the end, it's really more expensive. I'd rather pay all the money up front and get a better quality. I've had zero issues with it.

I'm busy. I have a job. I have two kids who are very active. My husband's also very busy. The last thing I want to do is have to put more on my plate. I just want something that works, that's easy, and very clear and concise. Kinetico also sends annual emails every now and then saying, "Hey, make sure you do this to check your water softener," just as a courtesy. They'll do little reminders, which I like, because when you're busy and active kids, a lot of times things can slip. So, overall, I've been really happy, and I would highly recommend Kinetico.

We were looking for some kind of filtration system. We had a number of people come over and give us the spiel and their quotes, and we chose to go with Kinetico. The sales guy was very knowledgeable and informative. He was not pushy. He just laid out the facts, which was one of the reasons why we decided to use them. He was willing to talk through any questions we had. Then the installation guys came over during that week. They shared with us what they were doing. It was a fairly painless and super easy installation.

With the softener, the water obviously is softer. We had pretty hard water. So, that was nice as far as just showering and cleaning things. Also we have the feeling that this is safer. The water has a different taste now, or lack of flavor is the best way to put it. I would recommend Kinetico. My only gripe is the filters don't last very long. We've got a house of five, and we're pretty busy, and they're not cheap. It costs a little bit of money every time you have to replace those. But overall, it was a good experience. We have recommended Kinetico to a couple of other people, and they've also gone with different options. The people that we've talked to did not have anything bad to say about Kinetico and the crews. We are probably gonna sell our house in the next couple years, which it's an upsell. So, that's a good thing to have as well when you're telling people what you have available as far as the items in your home.

When I bought our home and I could afford a water softener system, I heard Kinetico advertised on WHO, so I investigated it. I liked that it didn't have electricity. Plus, if you ran out, it automatically switched over and you still had soft water while the other one was recharging. I don't ever run out of soft water. It does a wonderful job. I spent money and put all-new plumbing in the house and put a new shower and a new bathroom in, and I didn't want it to get destroyed with crappy water. So that's why I put a Kinetico system in. The shower is five years old, but it looks brand-new.

Five years later, the system is still working like it did when it was new. A year ago, I got the Kinetico drinking water system in and I love that. I've had two different Kinetico people come out and they were both great guys. They were very polite and professional. They did a wonderful job. They explained everything to me, what they were doing, and how it works. Kinetico is a great company.

The Kinetico system is a hell of a bargain for what you're getting because you constantly have soft water. There are no headaches or hassles. I don't have to worry about it. I just check it once a month for softener salt and it works great. The biggest thing is that I didn't put the system in until about a year after I put the shower in. So, within a year's time, my shower looked like crap and I had to go in and scrub all of that lime off of it. Now it's been four years and I haven't had to touch it since the Kinetico system. So, for me, it's well worth the money and it works. That's the big thing. I don't mind paying money for something, but I want it to work and I don't want it to be a headache. That's your Kinetico system. It's an investment and it's not going to nickel-and-dime you.

The Kinetico salesperson I worked with was great. When I had some problems, she was on top of it. She took care of my problems. Initially, the installation was okay. But what ended up happening was that it wasn't properly installed, and I had a flood underneath the sink. And I had a lot of problems getting someone out to fix it. And that's when I called the salesperson, and she got on top of things and helped me get things done. ‘Cause it was going on for months. There wasn't a lot of follow-through until I got that salesperson involved. And I don't think I should have been calling the contractors.

They came out, and they reconnected the system. What happened was they didn't connect it correctly. Then I had damage that needed to be taken care of, and that's what took many months to get done. Now everything's fixed. Since having the system, everyone's skin in the house is better, not irritated.

We have some of the worst-looking well water. It's a mobile home park. The town has to use wells, but supposedly, they upgraded theirs. The people who own this park didn't. There are over 130 trailers in here. It's big. But when they turn the water off, it comes back black. When you turn it on, and then you let it run off. We got a Kinetico, and it's a good system. My system helps me. It works well. And I've got good people who sold it to me.

I live in Arizona, so the water sucks. My brother-in-law and my nephew had the Kinetico system and they recommended it to me. The salesman was almost too knowledgeable. He went on and on, and almost gave me too much information. He was confusing me. But it was fine. I purchased the model with the drinking water filtration system, and the installation was done within an hour and a half. The young technician seemed to be very knowledgeable, too and told me what I needed to do.

Everything is going well. We love the taste of the water. Anytime I have an issue, somebody has come out within 24 hours, though I wish it were a little bit simpler and more seamless. I was hoping for something with a little less maintenance. There's a filter that has to be cleaned out every four months. So, I've been learning how to do that. It's straightforward once you know how to do it. As far as the quality of the water and the drinking water, I couldn't be happier. Price-wise, I looked at other systems and they were in the same ballpark range. They're reasonably priced for what it is. Overall, the experience has been great.

I heard about Kinetico through word-of-mouth and went with them because, at the time, it used a mechanical timer and a mechanical system instead of an electric one. The sales visit was good and the reps were professional. I was replacing an old unit that had failed. The resin was spent, which prompted my call. I already knew what the hardness was and what dial was needed for the unit. The installer was professional, knew what he was doing, and was in and out in good order. So, the installation went smoothly and didn't take very long. It was straightforward. I purchased the dual tank mechanical timer water softener and it performs the way I expect it to. It has worked well, but it is fairly expensive. Overall, it's been a good and positive experience.

I was living in the country and using a well, which led me to look for a water filtration system. I chose Kinetico because it doesn’t use electricity and it recirculates based on usage. I've got a system that was purchased 23 years ago and another one three years ago. Dealing with the techs was mostly positive but I wasn't happy with the installer in the Arizona house. The way he piped the system choked down the flow of the water throughout the house. I spoke to him about it, but nothing ever happened. Two of my friends have Kinetico systems. They were happy with it, so I picked it. The agent who installed it was the same agent who is an exclusive agent for this area. He gave me a good price, and we installed all the filters, and it's been hassle-free. We have hard water so we got the softener system with a water filter for drinking at my kitchen tap. It was based on size and the hardness of the water and the compactness of the system. The water softener part of it works fine, but there's a design flaw in the water filtration system. The cap keeps falling off. It's a thing. Then I had to mechanically fix it myself, and I'm not a plumber, so I fumbled through it. There's a lot of cleanup work. It's not a big deal, but it seems like a very basic design flaw. The system works fine.
