Discrimination at Planet Fitness - Black people are not taken into consideration when it comes to the "head gear" rule at Planet Fitness! No, it is not religious or medical needs, but they are affecting my health when they told me that I can't workout at the gym because I want to keep my hair up and dry. As a black person, I have the right to be healthy, workout and protect my hair. Baseball caps do not work for people of color. A person who is not of color would not understand this because their hair is different than ours. So when the manager of the gym told me if I don't like the rule then cancel my membership, I was outraged. To me, this is a way of discrimination with censorship. They can't say no blacks allowed, but we will say no head gear so they can't come. I follow dress code, but when it comes to the "head gear" code, it is an issue that needs to be addressed.

I am a black woman who wants to look good and feel good. I also take care of my hair. I bought a hair product that supports my hair to breathe and look good after a work out. I purchased it at Sally's beauty supply store called Dri Sweat Women's Active Wear Protector Cap. I was then harassed by a staff member telling me that my hair product was not in code. I took this very offensive and discriminating against as a young black woman who decides to work out and be healthy. While our nation is fighting childhood obesity, heart disease, diabetes all around and any other overweight related health concerns that plague society. It would behoove such companies like Planet Fitness to do all that it can to reach out to those who need it most, like inner city people who happen to be Black and bi-racial. We, as black and bi-racial people, take care of our hair in a different manner than Whites. This is discrimination at its finest.

My credit card was stolen and I received a replacement card. I was on a $10 monthly payment plan. Planet Fitness in Souderton wasn't able to charge my account and charge me an NSF fee of a total of $80. They never called or emailed me about this and instead were happy to charge my card. I called to complain and went in to complain and was told thy couldn't waive the charges and that my account was cancelled. To make matters worse because I was a member for less than 12 months, they were charging me a $59 cancellation fee. If I didn't pay them the $139 they would send me to collections. I was furious and then they threatened to call the police. That was fine with me because I know who the thieves are. Avoid this overcrowded, rude staff club.

My daughter and I were in the changing room/bathroom/locker room. The custodian did not make his presence known, seen us, and proceeded to vacuum. Last night, the night custodian made his presence known, which has happened for the past week. However, last night, he was angered having to wait. He walked out angry, and said, "Every night." I have had to ask him to give me five minutes so he will stay out!
As to say, he has to wait every night for me. I work until midnight, and as a custodial supervisor, I find this very distasteful. Not only his rudeness, but it just so happened, this custodian walked right past my son, who was sitting right in the custodians path and heard his remarks. Is there no training or guidelines to give your custodians? I love PF and the new hours. It really fits my schedule. But, the last thing I need is to have to deal with a rude custodian. He needs to wait until the rooms are empty and when announcing his presence, if one answers, then he need not enter.

The staff there was very rude and nasty along with the manager who is very nasty and who does not seem to understand that if the customer don't pay, he doesn't get a pay check. I went to the Pelham branch with my father and sister who is a minor and because she didn't have an ID, they wouldn't let her in. Let me tell you that my father is a black card holder who they consider to be a VIP customer. I just can't believe the attitude of the manager. I would never go back. I strongly recommend no one to join Planet Fitness gym.

Planet Fitness never told me that there is a membership fee of $10.00 for subscription. They asked me for a credit card for monthly charges to be auto debit, but they not only took the monthly fee, they also went ahead and charge me for the membership that they never told me about. Moreover, in the month of January, they charge me five different times for monthly service, which I don't agree with, because I only have 2 memberships with them. Planet Fitness deliberately charge on my credit card like if that's their credit card. The manager at Planet Fitness wasn't helpful at all.

My name is Linda ** and I am a member of Planet Fitness and went through their website, and it seems you give the company or franchise its ratings. I would like to inform you of the discrimination and insult that I encountered at the new Rochelle branch with an employee and the gym manager, Chris. The Hispanic lady who checks the gym members in when they come to the gym had been quite rude to me the first time I went to work out at that particular gym.
So today, when I went to work out, upon entering the gym, I noticed that she was assisting three women with some application, so I decided to patiently wait till she was ready to check me in. Whilst waiting, a Hispanic couple walked in and immediately, she dropped what she was doing and tended to them. After she was done with them, she then signaled to me to come forward. Once I came forward, I said to her, "You do know I was here before them, right?” Her response was, "Yes, I know," in a rude, nonchalant manner.
I paid for my drink, checked in and went to workout. After working out, I decided to take it up with Chris, the manager, who assured me he would review the tapes and handle the issue only to my horror when I picked up my jacket and was about walking out the locker room, I heard and saw the same Hispanic employee laughing out loud with the manager, Chris, and she stated, "I knew she would say something.
Oh, my God." And immediately when she saw me, she made a serious face and wiped the smirk off her face and neither of them had anything to say but have a great day. Honestly, this sort of franchise does not deserve any sort of kudos for customer service and the manager himself is a disgrace to such a franchise. Please, if you can do anything to forward this to someone who can discipline such an act, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I can't cancel without writing to the club. I have a balance because my card expired and no one mentioned it when I came into the club to satisfy the bill so the next month and the month after that the same issue. You ask why 2 months went by before I really noticed. I moved out of state after paying the first bill that came in the mail. I used auto debit from my bank account and the person taking my payment the first time used my updated card to make the payment and never told me that the reason a bill came in the mail was due to an expired card. The manager told me they aren’t refunding anything although I had not used the gym in over 2 months and she could see that I hadn't (because I moved) but instead told me it was my fault!
My card did expire. Did all my other creditors request an up to date card? Yes. Did Planet Fitness? No. Did I go in to handle this? Yes. Did they tell me this was a problem? No. What a rip off. Don’t sign with this company. It's trivial but if you have a real big problem, expect to be very upset with the end result. Megan at the Northville store handled my phone call and it ended with her hanging up on me as she explained that Planet Fitness could not possibly tell people why their account is having problems because if they did it for everyone, they wouldn't be able to run the gym.

It doesn't even deserve one star. Everything was hunky dory until I tried to cancel. You can't cancel over the phone, you can't cancel with a fax, you have to mail in a letter—fine. I mailed in a letter to cancel. I got charged again. When I called in to ask why the employee told me it had to be certified. Fine. Did that. Even took all the money out of my bank account. Now they won't cancel because I have a balance on my account. This is a load of bull and I am done with it. I finally found the number for corporate and will be calling them first thing Monday morning. I work 60 plus hours a week out of state and cannot go in in person to fill out the form. Now I am seeking legal action. I want everything from the last 18 months (since I was in the gym last) that I paid back. I want them to remove the late charges they say I owe. If they do that, I will drop it. If I get more trouble, I will be seeking damages.

Having worked for PF, there are a few issues that need to be resolved. Most PF will not come back to try and claim the money. They will just refuse new memberships under that name until the balance is brought to 0. Most have annual $99 down/yr contracts. Around Christmas, these are the best deals and in my opinion, the only reason to join. They are a private club with extremely high turnover rates for employees. Typically, only the manager staff stays on for a year or more and most employment agreements are severed for trivial reasons bordering on personal issues with very little time or effort exercised (no pun intended) to correct the problem.
Sadly, you get what you pay for and $20/mo. It doesn't buy anything but dinner at McD's. Even then, not much. Having put in my time (>2yrs.), and being of the non-manager persuasion, I'd say the vast majority of people at PF are happy enough with service (see above) that PF has no shortage of business. Catch-22: If the people that disliked PF were substantial, in any respect, PF would eventually go out of business. Think Sears or Friendly's, businesses that do not cater to their clientele will wither and die. But that's not the case with PF. It's the exact opposite. From what's posted here, it's the same thing I've seen during my time in PF. If they are taking advantage of people, it's the people that present the opportunity that they target. SSDD: Don't like it, don't use it.

I am currently in a battle with Planet Fitness in Bloomington, MN. My son signed up with them, and they failed to ID him. He is 17 and cannot enter a contract. His mother and I caught the problem right away. He has used the gym once. No big deal right? No, they will not simply cancel and waive the fees. They want me to come in, even though I barely even have time for my family, let alone them. I work 50 hours a week, and am going back to school. My wife works two jobs, with school as well. The manager keeps telling me, he signed the contract, etc. It doesn't matter! He's 17 and cannot be held in a contractual obligation. They better cancel without a fee or I will be having a huge blow out with them. If they even think about trying to collect, or hit my credit, I will be hiring an attorney.

My son called me from the gym telling me about the problem he was having on Planet Fitness and his account. He was telling me how Steven who's employed at the gym in Ocoee was degrading him and I could hear Steven in the background yelling "your account is always insufficient". On about he drives a Mercedes and my son drives a Nissan. This is unacceptable, unprofessional and demeaning! I told my son not to argue with him even though he felt every right to defend himself. People go to the gym to better themselves if it's health, self-confidence, mentally or just for a better look.
With today's economy, even the supposedly $10 a month that's deducted from one's account, people sacrifice just to accomplish one or all the things I mentioned earlier. Not to be humiliated and put down by a group of young people with no people skills and consideration of what someone might be going through for the reason that they are there in the first place. It's sad that you cannot contact their supervisor or the person who could make a difference. The gym in Ocoee really needs to be investigated. Somehow before things get out of hands.

When I joined the gym almost a year ago, I was told that no head gear was allowed, except baseball caps. I turned to the worker and told him that I have to use a bandana, because I sweat a lot, and I do not like the sweat to get in my eyes. He said the bandana was okay. A few weeks ago, I was told that I could not wear a bandana, but a headband was okay. I folded my bandana into a headband, and was told that it was okay like that. Now, I was told that I could not wear a headband. I am quite puzzled. I told the manager that a baseball cap cannot hold sweat, to which he agreed, but he could not give me the reason why headbands were not allowed. What is my recourse, other than quitting?

I am extremely upset with the way I am being treated. Planet Fitness is stealing my money! I joined the Wilmington Delaware club in July of last year. I got the black membership, and then moved 5 months later. Knowing I had to wait a year to cancel, or be subject to the early cancellation fee, I waited and continued to be charged the $20 monthly fee without protest, even though I could no longer attend the gym.
I stopped using the checking account in June of this year, and when I started using it again in October of this year, they charged the membership fee. I called in and demanded that they close my membership, since it had been over a year, and I was no longer subject to the cancellation fee. Kevin, the manager assured me it would not happen again.
Then today my account has been charged again for the membership fee. It's thanksgiving and I don't get paid again, until the day after, so everything I had in my account was for my family's thanksgiving food. $20 may not be a lot, but to people on a budget in this economy, it is. I called the gym and spoke to "Kevin" again who says that he couldn't cancel my membership, without a certified letter (even though I hadn't been there in over a year). After explaining the situation, he put me in by not canceling the membership last month, he still refused to give me his manager's phone number. He said I had to wait until December 1st. he was very unconcerned and treated the sitution sarcastiscally even laughing at times. He even told me that they will continue to take my money even though I have not been there until I either come there in person, or send a certified letter, neither of which I can afford to do.
I feel as though Planet Fitness is taking advantage of me in a very bad time in my life. I wanted to contact FOX 29 news but decided to give the company a chance to respond first. All I want is my money back!

He will possibly not have to be to Texas Ft. Bliss until 12/5/11. All my son wants to do is keep up his PT while home. I have been a member of the Planet Fitness gym in Ocoee, Florida for more than 3 years. Three months ago, my credit card reached its expiration date and I received a new one from my bank. Yes, I did not notify Planet Fitness of the new card. It was an error on my part. However, I am a regular attender at the gym. So, I thought that I would discuss this with the folks at the desk as soon as possible. On a side note here, never in the 3 months of getting my new bank card did I ever receive notification or even a comment when I showed my member number at the door to get in. Instead, I received an email stating that my account was past due $40.31 and I needed to correct this immediately.
On my next visit to the gym the following week, I spoke with the 2 individuals at the front desk. These young, pubescent employees treated me very rudely right off the bat when I asked them to help itemize the charges I was being asked to pay. They said the amount was now not just the $40.31 only, but was actually $89.50. It was because the annual dues of $29.95 was due and another month had past. So, I owed another $10 for that month, even though only 3 days had gone by since I received the letter in the mail. I told them I had been a faithful customer for over 3 years. I asked if there was anything that could be done to correct this or make an exception based on my faithful business. Not to mention, they had been able to get payments directly and faithfully out of my account for 3 years without any issues.
They told me no exceptions were made. They said that if I did not pay the charges right there at that time, my membership would be cancelled. I asked if there was anyone I could speak with. They said no, the charges stand as is. I guess the worst part of the whole "discussion" was the fact that these two individuals were the most condescending, rude, and disrespectful creeps I have ever encountered at place of business. They actually laughed when I told them that something had to be done about this unfair business practice. I paid the charge and filled out the form to cancel my membership. I paid the charges only because I did not want my credit ruined. In hindsight, I would recommend to others not to pay based on the final icing on the cake as I was leaving. These two characters smiled at me when I left. They laughed and waved as they said, "Have a nice day". If these two brats were my kids, I would have beat the living daylights out of them with a belt, sent them to their rooms, and grounded them for 2 months for treating an adult so rudely.
I learned two things today: Never enter into a contract with Planet Fitness. Secondly, the young people that Planet Fitness employs and trains are the rudest employees in the fitness business. In my 3 years of being a member, I saw other customers treated so rudely for similar questions they asked at the register. I saw one guy ask why he was being charged an annual fee when it was never disclosed and they cancelled his membership on the spot. It was a very loud and crazy confrontation that most of the gym witnessed. Obviously, from my own experience, experiences I witnessed, and those that I have read online, Planet Fitness is not a reputable business to deal with. I just don't understand why an attorney or group of attorneys have not opened a class action lawsuit on this organization. They have a lot of complaints that are logged about similar deceptive business practices with customer's payments. Something needs to be done.

Hi. To all who is reading this, beware of Planet Fitness. Yes, they're rude and display racist behavior. They lie to you at the inception to get you to sign and then take money out of your bank account. Their District Manager is ** and a loser at best. Please read my complaint to their office and the rude response from the D.M.
My name is Edward **. My member ID is **. I have faithfully abided by the legal terms under my contract with Planet Fitness. Thus, under the said contract, all elements have been met accordingly, with my payments withdrawn out of my account. Monthly, the amount of $10.65 has been taken for fee. Upon signing my contract, I paid a $21.30 fee to join, and thereafter, approximately ten days later, a fee of $10.65.
Upon signing my contract, I thoroughly read the elements of said contract. Amber, your employee stated that I would be liable for a yearly annual fee beginning October 2012 for said usage of the gym. As cited thereon on my contract, it inconspicuously states October 29 and avers yearly but conveniently leaves out the year 2012. Moreover, the said contract does not denote a fee of $29.00 will be taken annually for October 2011. Three legal elements of a clear and concise contract which may be held legally binding under law and enforceable in a court of law are acceptance, mutuality, and consideration of the parties.
I have been a member of said gym since April 2011. Thus, there was never an intent on my part to agree that I would pay an annual fee (which would be fraudulent) upon signing after four months. Thus, said contract is so one sided on this issue and profoundly ambiguous that no court or judge would agree that the language listed thereon the said contract would be enforceable. That is because this issue of the annual fee does not cite the year October 2011 as furthermore, I was personally told by the Representative that this fee of $(29.00) would be charged to my account October 2012 which was sufficient and agreeable to me.
On September 19, 2011, a charge of $10.65 was taken out of my account for dues. Thereafter, a fee of $29.00 plus tax on October 3, 2011 was illegally withdrawn without my consent or knowledge on this day. On October 5, 2011, I met with the Gym sponsor, Amber. I requested from her for the reason why the aforementioned amount of $29.00 was illegally taken out of my account. Her response was so argumentative, disruptive, and seemingly with racist intent stated read the sign.
I demanded the corporate office number and was refused the number. Therefore, as cited thereto of my complaint I, Edward **, hereby officially serve Planet Fitness with my notice of intent to seek Legal Action with the Attorney General's Office for Florida citing fraud and file a separate action in Civil Court for damages relating to said matter. My account was overdrawn $100.00 without my consent, where I assessed fees in the amount of $80.00. Forthwith, I am demanding that Planet Fitness reverse the charge of $29.00 plus tax immediately, and in return, this will reverse said fees from my bank. If Planet Fitness does not comply with my request to return my money into my bank account by October 6, 2011, I will proceed with legal action as required under law. Thus, I seek further remedy for the malicious and overtone in racist behavior exhibited by the staff at this location.
Best regards,Edward
Their response:
Good afternoon Edward,
I appreciate you taking the time to contact us. Planet fitness all across the US always have a charge of $29 plus tax every October 1st. This is something that all 15 of our Orlando clubs process for every member that is paying the monthly dues for $10. Amber has been with our company for a long time and always tells new members that they will be charged in the upcoming October from when you joined. We do have all of our members sign and initial our agreement to say that they understand the financial obligations. I feel that Planet Fitness has been forthcoming in their explanation of our agreement, and at this time, we are not willing to give a refund back to you.

My wife and I signed up with Planet Fitness in April. We both were very busy, and didn't have time to go very often so we cancelled out our memberships about a month later. Recently, I rejoined in early September, and quickly noticed that quite a few pieces of equipment were missing. Most noteworthy of having a squat rack, I asked another member if there had been any talks of the gym getting one. He informed me that they just removed it not too long enough because they do not want body builders in the gym. This is of course ridiculous, as anyone can benefit from squats.
Recently, I started noticing all of the discrimination and racism complaints that surround Planet Fitness so I looked into it. What I found shocked me and I made up my mind to leave the gym based mostly on my morals, as well as the missing equipment.
I have a charge on my bank account for $31, which was weird since it is supposed to be $10. While I was cancelling my membership, I asked the desk clerk about the charge and she said that it was their "yearly membership fee." I informed her that I have only been a member of the gym for one month, which she looked at my account in the computer and then replied, "It says here that you have been a member since April."
I explained that we joined for one month, then cancelled, then I joined again and am now cancelling again after one month. That is a total of two months. She said that if I hadn't rejoined until September 15th, then the fee would have been waived, but because I joined on September 13th, then there is nothing she can do. I said, "So I need to call corporate," and she replied, "You cannot call corporate. You have to fill out a survey online and if they feel that it is bad enough, then they will issue a credit."
I honestly don't remember even being told that there is a yearly membership fee, not to mention that you are charged this fee whether you have been a member or not, as long as you are a member at the beginning of the fiscal year.

Buyer beware! While at the gym the other day, I was informed that I had to remove my hat. It is a simple crocheted hat I wore to keep my head warm. The manager had an employee tell me that I had to remove it. I spoke with the manager about this, and was told that anything other than a baseball cap wasn't allowed. Well I don't own or want to wear a ball cap. This is a total contradiction to their mission statement, which states that they want you to feel comfortable and accepted.
The manager told me the policy is stated in the contract, and asked if I had read it. Of course, I read it. It states the I agree to all of their rules, which may vary from location to location, and are subject to change at any time. Basically, I only have the right to do what I am told. This is not only bad business, it is very fascist. The manager told me she's not allowed to give out the corporate home office number, or her boss's number. This is ridiculous! After searching for this information online, I was made aware of the fact, that their M.O. is total B.S.! Apparently, this is the norm and not the exception! You will not find any contact info on their website. They apparently can't be bothered with their customers. I am furious over this blatant harassment, and am concerned too about others rights. Persons have a right to be comfortable. I am concerned about elderly, bald, and persons who've had chemo and want to wear a hat. I expressed this concern to the manager, and was told they could make an exception. My being cold is not good enough. I suspect this could be racially motivated, as people living in this area tend to be very racist. This is a total harassment!
Their time and energy would be better spent fixing the equipment that is inoperable, and replacing the bulbs in the tanning booths and beds, that are old. I would not recommend this place to anyone. After reading others complaints, I'm convinced they are unethical, dishonest, un-American, incompetent, and worthless!

I asked for a 1-year contract but he explained to me that I can sign for 3 years but pay for only 1 year, and if I wish to continue after a year, I can pay the next installment amount package as I go. But after three months, I saw my account is in arrears. I called the management to speak with the consultant who assisted me but he is no more working there. Now, they are saying that as I signed the contract, I need to pay the amount. I don't know how to proceed now as the consultant who helped me is no longer there. Can anyone help me how to sort this out? I am even ready to cancel my contract as it is just 4 months old.

I canceled my membership, along with my son's membership, over a year ago. And I paid the balance they said was due after I canceled. Now, over a year later, they started billing me for $39.00 in June. I do not even have an active membership with them anymore. I tried calling them. The guy who answered the phone told me not to worry about it as "they will not report it on my credit anyway".

I was a member of this gym for more than three years. I haven't visited the gym more than two years because of my busy schedule. I got an e-mail saying that my membership wasn't paid. I checked my balances and found that April to June wasn't deducted from my direct payment account. I went to the gym and talked with the employee there. My credit card was renewed. She said that my account was closed and I owe them $70.00. My membership fee is only $10.00/month. So they charged me $40.00 fee. I asked to see the manager and she told me that he only works during weekdays. I went back to the gym and asked Rick to waive the $40.00 fees but he refused. They screwed my account two years ago and they overcharged me $20.00. Rick reviewed my account and he said that he was going to issue me a credit. After not getting credit, I reminded him again and he asked for a copy of my statement which I gave him.
After two years, I never got that $20.00. I asked him to close my account and offer him to pay $30.00, overdue $20.00, so they owe me $10.00. He said that I owe them $70.00-20.00, they owe me $50.00. I had to pay $50.00 to close my account. He was threatening me that he'll call the police if I don't leave. All I asked him was to waive the $40.00 fees. I didn't know when my credit card was reviewed that they couldn't get their fees. When they messed up my account, it took two years to get back credit. But something is out of my control when they penalized me with $40.00 fees. He was very rude.

I went home paid the balance online and was told that I could just call the location to cancel over the phone when balance was paid. I called back on July 2nd to cancel. The girl I spoke with said ok its cancelled. The following week I stopped by the gym to verify my payment for $31.64 was taken and it was cancelled. The gentlemen at the desk said yes I show your membership is cancelled. On my credit card statement for 07/18/2011, I have a charge of $21.64. I went into the gym for a third time & they advised it was never cancelled & they refuse to refund the $21.64. I am going to dispute this charge with my credit card company. On 6/14/11, at about 2pm, I was at the Melville branch for my work out. I showed my card to the girl at the desk as usual and she went ahead to clarify that I was from another branch - Carle Place. So I said to her that I have officially transferred to this branch and was informed the last time I was there on 6/6 or 6/7 that it will be effective on Saturday, 6/11. On this day I had to pay extra $5, so I said I will start when it becomes effective, instead of paying $5 each time. However on 6/14/11, the girl at the desk said since I joined in April, I can officially transfer by the end of June.
I proceeded to the locker room where I was having a private conversation with my friend about how 3 different people are telling me 3 different things. Denise then interrupted before I came out of the locker room that my friend should let me know she is standing there. So she asked her what for? Then when I came out she said the same thing and I said I am not afraid to say whatever I was feeling in her presence. She went on to say it is her facility and that they are trying to help me, so I said yes, but I am getting 3 different information from 3 different people, which is conflicting .
She then started threatening about calling the cops to walk me out. At this time I was upset, because first of all I was neither talking to her nor about her, and she was eavesdropping on other people's conversation. If she was indeed concerned about her facility, she will be a good customer service person and attempt to resolve the problem instead of threatening me about the cops and taking it personally. I told her to go ahead and call them. Instead of calling the cops, she instructed her co-workers to hand me a cancellation form stating that my membership is cancelled in all of Planet Fitness. My question is on what basis? I was merely relating what happened to my friend. I intend to have a lawsuit for this injustice. This is an abuse of power causing me unnecessary embarrassment, injustice, disrespect, and emotional distraught.

After two years of paying for a membership I could not use, I attempted to cancel over the phone and was denied as they do not allow cancellations over the phone. I came into the club and attempted to cancel and was denied because of a balance due from two years prior when my CC was stolen. I updated my CC info in 2009 but after the bill date and was charged, thus, I still have an outstanding balance of one month plus the return fee. I have been a member for over 4 years. I paid two years longer than I needed to and referred several who eventually purchased memberships.
While their "contract" may give them the right to refuse my cancellation multiple times, I believe it is unfair to hold me to $30 in charges after they have taken my money for 24 months since that occurrence without any notice. I wonder if I would have been able to use the club with that balance, if not, then I believe they would need to refund the entire amount I have paid since then since they were charging me for something they would not allow me to use.

I stated my intent and signed a cancellation form, which was co-signed by a member of the staff. A month after the "last bill date", I'm still getting charged! The BBB & RipOffReports sites validate numerous "billing errors" and problems from this gym. Buyer, beware: get the termination details spelled out and mutually agreed to before joining this place. Use a credit card for protection. It's a very frustrating experience. And they have no intention of changing their business practices.

Not knowing right away that I was ripped off, I continued with my routine. After I found the money missing, I told the front desk and not the manager who was only feet away. Their attitude was more like to bad my fault. The next day I posted a message in the locker room warning the thief on what I would do to him. Looking back, not very smart I called the cops also.
After 3 days of going back, I spoke to the manager. It is the same guy who was cleaning the locker room. I did not at anytime accuse him but the reply from him was very confronting. I sent planet fitness a email, which is another bad move. Because I sent it to the same place where the theft took place. Well, I got a call today 2-8-11 from the same guy, informing me that my membership was terminated, Because I sent an email on what i would do if i caught the person in?..Well after enough was said, I let him know that he was the one I believe who did the act. The whole thing was dealt wrong by both parties.

Planet Fitness on Route 70 in Cherry Hill, NJ has the worst management I’ve ever experienced. They cancelled my membership and called the cops on me because they, as usual, could not help me with my billing question and thought I was giving them an attitude. I wanted to pay them by check or another credit card for that month. This happened on the 17th of January 2011. I pay for my son who has a white card and I, a black card, but if there is not enough money on the card, they charge me an additional 10 bucks each because they say they can't bill them together. What kind of company can't accomplish billing both together? The front desk responded by saying, “Sorry, we have an outside billing company that handles this so and they can’t bill a white and black membership on one charge.” I asked to speak with the manager when one guy behind the desk told me to leave and take my two sons with me. My sons, 18 and 14, were already working out. The manager finally appeared, but was busy kicking some other guy out, how ironic. Incidentally, they called the cops on that guy too. Then they kicked my son out because he was related to me.
Any lawyers out there want to help with civil suit? The cop arrived and told me to leave and he had no justification there because it was private property, but he did witness the manager pull my 18-year-old son off the gym floor and cancel his membership because he was related to me. So I have a great witness for court. My son will be filing for his own law suit separately because he is 18.
FYI, for those people trying to avoid being charged after they cancel, go to their website and change your credit card info to a card that is tied to a dead account. Pain and suffering. I have two lawsuits here. one from me and an even better one for my son who is 18.

This is a mistake and they refuse to give me my refund of $70.00. I would not agree to sign up for the black card. I do not tan nor do I bring other people with me that don't have a membership. There is no other reason to maintain a black card. I have brought this to their attention and they refuse to refund my money. On October 8, I called Planet Fitness about a charge that was placed on my Capital One card for $40.00 quote, a maintenance fee. They stated to me that I would have to come into the store to cancel my memberships. I was told I could not cancel over the phone and that the fee for each of my 3 memberships was $30.00 to keep the monthly fee locked into the $10.00 rate. I then asked why was it $40.00 then? I was told because my Capital One credit card denied the charges and I was being charged the $10.00 returned fee for each membership. I then stated, "you charged me in the beginning of the month?". They told me to get out of my contract from 1 year ago and read it. To which I stated, "the young girl, who originally signed me up, never informed me of this". And after one year, I cannot find my comply of the contract.
I asked to speak to the manager, to which I was told he was not in all weekend, and that I would be able to speak to the assistant manager when he is available, but he was busy right now. I told that I would be in the morning to cancel my accounts. He then told me I would not be able to do that because the assistant manager is not in until later in the day, when I would be at work. I told him that someone had to be in charge and responsible for the customers' safety and should be able to close the accounts. I was told no and that my daughter's account and mine could be closed, that no fees are due. But my wife's account owed $29.99 still and could not be closed.
This is crazy. These fees are for this coming year. No reminders of the phantom memberships were ever sent in the mail and if you want to cancel, you will not be able to. On 10/08/10, after I spoke to them, they told me it was a single $39.99 charge. I placed another $25.00 into my Capital One account to cover my EZ pass fees and internet provider. Looks like my complain is similar to others here. I joined this place late '09, stopped going there in Jan 2010 and canceled the membership in Feb 2010. Now cancellation is done by signing a form, duplicate of which is given to me. Well, I thought that's the end of the story. And like lot of other things, misplaced this duplicate I got from them.
Every month, they still kept charging me $10 and since I did not pay attention to the statement did not notice it, however, suddenly they charged me $32 in October which kind of awoke me. When I walked in the store to see how we can sort this out, employee there was squarely refusing to accept that I signed cancellation form since it's not there in their paper logs. Apparently they have three entries for cancellation and mine did not figure out in any. Somehow they do not believe the employee who took my cancellation form could have misplaced it or simply forgotten to update their log. I was willing to compromise my monthly charges that I over payed $90 (since Jan). All I asked was to refund of $32 which was for membership renewal for next year. However, employee there was not willing to part with anything since he knew for sure I have misplaced the cancellation form.
I was surprised when the same employee told me that other people have gone through it and they 'always' refunded it as long as original cancellation form is produced. It's difficult to accept that such things can happen in this place but they would neither fix their system (no online cancellation or instant cancellation on computer) nor refund or for that matter compromise on anything. Honestly, I would be scared to give my credit card information for recurring payment in this place since nobody in Planet Fitness looks accountable.
One last thing, employee told me its 'company policy' and I can bring it up with the company, however, if I go to the website, you will not find 'contact us' or any other types of grievance form, simply none. Even though I do accept that this place was by far the cheapest and competent as long as equipments are concerned, I would avoid this because it's not accountable to anything.

Half the time, the equipment didn't work; there wasn't anybody around to help you, not to mention the loud horn that goes off if somebody puts their weights down too hard. A few days after I joined, I ended up in the hospital with cancer.
It took me a long time to cancel my membership but when I went in to cancel my membership, I walked up to the desk. The guy behind the desk was talking so I waited. Another employee ran over to me and asked if he could help me. When I told him I wanted to cancel my membership he said" Oh" and walked away.
When Chris finished, he came over to me. He looked up my membership and told me I owed money on my account. I told him that was impossible as we all know they debit your account on the 18th of every month. He told me that one month over a year ago, they didn't charge my account. He said there must have been something wrong with my credit card but they had no problems charging my card every other month. So, not only do they want the $10.70 but they added on a fee; they now want $20.70 for my account and $20.70 for my daughter as well. I told him there was no way they missed a month. I handed him the papers and told him my account was closed.
When I got home 4 minutes later, I called my credit card company to make sure they could no longer charge me anymore. My credit card company told me Planet Fitness had just charged my account $41.40. So on one statement, Planet Fitness had charged my credit card $10.70, $10.70, $31.10, $31.10, $20.70, $20.70. The bottom line is don't give anybody the right to charge your credit card as they will take full advantage of their power.

Cancelled my account back in January and I'm receiving letters with outrages amounts due. Several calls placed, letters sent, and matter unsolved. During the week of January 25, 2010, I placed a call to the Planet Fitness I signed up. The reason I called was because I received a letter stating my account wasn't charged and I had to pay $59 (which includes additional fees). I was told by their customer service representative in order to cancel my membership I would need to send a certified letter requesting the cancellation.
On January 29, 2010, a certified letter was sent. Two weeks later, I received another letter requesting me to pay for additional charges. When I called Planet Fitness the customer service representative told me he wasn't able to help me and I would need to send another letter. Two letters were sent, one complaining about their customer service unprofessional tactics and one again certified to cancel my account. A week ago I was sent another letter requesting me to pay $308.91. On several occasions I've tried to solve this matter and am appalled by their integrity in their conduct of business practiced. The reason I joined this gym was due to affordability and I'm extremely disappointed in the outcome.
The purpose of this letter is to complain about the letter received on the week of January 25, 2010. I would like to know why my account is not being charged every month the way it was previously. In addition to the membership monthly charges, I am also being charged service charge(s). I've been a member of Planet Fitness for over a year and have never encountered these problems until now. The credit card information on file is my debit card. My checking account has never had less than two hundred dollars in it. I find this very unfair to me to have to pay the balance in this letter.
According to your customer service representative, I would need send a certified letter in order to close my account. A certified letter has been sent as well to cancel my account. A member has to be treated with respect in order to value their membership. I will hope we can come to a mutual agreement. I find the balance incorrect and would like someone to please take a look at my membership. If for any reason there was a mistake on my account I should have received a letter from your company months ago and this is the first letter I receive. What baffles me is how I receive information about registering a family member or friend but don't get an important letter until months later. I look forward to hearing from your company. Thank you greatly for your time and consideration. They send numerous bills after January 2010 with balance due which I don't agree on.

I do not understand the lack of consistency in the gym rules. I was told that I could not wear a bandanna because it is "intimidating" and is usually used by gang members. I am in my mid 50's and was wearing a workout "cap" and not a bandanna. I was told it needed to be rolled which it cannot be because it is an elastic cap. OK so I can't wear anything covering the head because I could intimidate someone, why then someone was allowed to wear a white bandanna that's not rolled yesterday, and last Friday, someone was wearing a skull cap and nothing was said to them either.
Is this a prejudice issue? Rules should be enforced to all. To his credit, the manager would have happily have canceled my membership by phone. He was happy to be done with our business w/ this company. Obviously, I need to read my contract first based on all of these complaints before we were charged 3 yrs without going.

I signed up online for a gym membership to this establishment in 2007. After a couple of weeks, since I still have never gone to the gym, I decided that it would not be convenient for me to go to this club. I called and asked to have my membership cancelled. I thought I was all set. A monthly fee has been charged to my credit card for three years and I have never set foot in the gym. I only realized this membership was still active because I received a bill from them. I cancelled the credit card to which this was automatically billed every month. It was my responsibility to notice this and I did not so I cannot complain about the last three years but when I called to cancel the membership, they would not accept my termination over the phone. I must go to the gym to fill out a form or send a certified letter which they will also not accept by regular mail. So after they gave me a charge of over $300.00 for a membership, I have never used it once and they refuse to terminate my contract unless I go there.

I have never seen so many complaints related to one place involving the same type of unethical charges. Charging a $10 fee because the expiration date changed on the credit card and they were not notified by physically presenting the card to them. I called VISA and they noted that the number did not change. Therefore, the charge would have gone through because the card was activated. VISA indicated that Planet Fitness has no grounds for this charge and people can dispute the charge when the credit card bill arrives. I see others have tried this but to no avail.
Planet Fitness offered no written notice of this policy. Just this week, I was notified verbally by a Planet Fitness clerk that my credit card expired. It's funny that VISA tells me the card is active. Will I now get the unethical charge, even though my account is active? My question, if automatic WD is supposed to be an ongoing charge, will the electric company and others get in on the action to raise revenue? The bottom line is, I instructed them to charge my credit card; it is active, and the charge will go through. They should go after the folks that close their credit card accounts and do not notify them, not customers that pay their bills on time. It's the first time a charge is incurred because you pay your bill on time. Cheap is as Cheap gets. You get what you pay for, I guess.

I went to the location and called several times every time they charge the account. The last time, the manager was very rude and told me that if I pay the balance of $40, it will be the last charge. I just got a notice from the bank that they charged $80. Not only did they deal with a minor, but they are crooks and keep charging the account. I currently checked my credit card account and I noticed an extra charge of $10 has been made to my automatic direct debit of $10 of which I pay every month for planet fitness. I personally went to ask Planet Fitness why and the manager said it was because I had changed my expiration date on my card. I then told him it is the same account I am using and even showed him my card which showed the same date he had on his database. He requested I call the credit card company. I called the credit card company and they also denied that it was the merchant’s fault and that a wrong expiration date was entered.
Right now, no one wants to take the blame. So now, if the credit card company refused Planet Fitness any money, how were they able to have a second attempt by taking out $20? Plant fitness is charging me $10 for penalty fee for no fault of mine. This monthly payment is automated. All I know is $10 should be coming out of my account every month period. I was not the one who entered the wrong data, Planet Fitness must take responsibility here!

My bank had to cancel my card and re-issue a new one due to a security problem. I forgot to change the card that was used for my monthly billing with Planet Fitness. I called the billing company right away when they sent me a letter to say they haven't received payment. I wanted to know for sure what card they had. The billing company said they couldn't help me, but to go to my local gym. The manager was always out when I went there and he wouldn't return my calls, when I left voice messages. Meanwhile, I was assessed additional fees, even after I provided the billing company with a new card to pay for my "lock-in" rate, which is the fee that first went unpaid. Their delay in getting back to me let another deadline take place, which was my next monthly fee.
No one told me that I needed to also provide a new card for the monthly fee billing. Not only did they not give me my lock in rate of $10, but they charged me an additional $39 for "return" and "service fee". They make it very difficult to find a person who does have authority to fix anything. Passing the buck is in their favor, it gives them more time to access more "fees". It doesn't seem fair when the customer is trying to genuinely resolve problems. I had already decided to drop my membership, before this happened, but I had no idea they would treat customers like this. I am glad I found out. Everyone needs to know how they really make their money. It isn't from $10 membership fees, it is from passing the buck, as long as they can rake in extra fees. The principle of the thing is that I should pay them an extra $50-$60 that shouldn't be theirs, due to impersonal business practice.

I signed up for a membership at Planet Fitness in April of 2009. I went to the gym on Zaragoza ave and was told by the young lady at the counter to sign up on the internet. It was easier to get a black card membership because it had free tanning and unlimited guest passes. The gym was busy so I did sign up on the internet. I was transferred out of the country on a temporary assignment and not having received my membership card, I called the gym (still on Zaragoza). I was told I still needed to pay out the contract but I needed to write a letter and my membership would be held until I come back.
I was back in town in February. Not planning at that time to be back in El Paso for a while, I stopped by to see about how to cancel out the contract. I was told at that time, the contract cancellation fee was more than what was owed on the contract. I was also assured that it would cancel in April and I needed to do do nothing more.
On May 26 of 2010, I was still being charged a membership fee. I called the Mesa gym because that is where I was led to believe the owner has his office. I told my problem to a young man who referred me to Jason at Rojas Gym. I called Jason and he acted like I was from another planet. I explained to him that I was in Southern Mexico and the contract was supposed to be cancelled in April. He said it was taken care of and I should stop in and see him as soon as I came in. He would be in the gym until 7:00pm Monday - Friday. I stopped by the gym and even though it was Friday, 6:15 pm, Jason was gone until Monday. I was given a form to fill out and was assured that everything was cancelled. I signed the form and was under the impression that it was all taken care of.
Imagine my surprise when I was charged $63.86 for the month of June. I went in to the Rojas gym again June 29, 2010. I asked to see Jason. He was on the phone. The young girl behind the desk pointed to a chair and told me to wait. Jason finished his phone call and grabbed his keys and started out the door. I called him back and he rudely told me no one said I was there (I sat right down in front of where he was standing). I explained to him who I was and he had no recollection of speaking to me. Jason then said I needed to look at my contract and I told him I never got a contract or membership card. He then told me there was nothing he or I could do. I have never seen such lousy customer service.

The following, same issue so I paid using another credit card and I setup my checking account for future payments. Now, this month, same issue. I called my bank and received a reference number. My membership fee was charged on the 17th. Stella says according to her records, my account is past due so I will have to go up there again. I called Planet Fitness to inquire, and they said it is a yearly fee to keep the preferred rate of $19.99 per month. I told Tommy that I just canceled the membership and he said that the charge was processed back in May 25, 2010 and processed for June 1, 2010. I told him that the membership was canceled a day later and I would expect that this charge be refunded. He said it would not be refunded.
I explained to him that I did not use the gym at all for several months so why would I pay to keep a preferred rate when I canceled the membership. While the $39 is not causing me economic damage, Planet Fitness does not send any notification that this amount is being charged and no indication that they will be remotely flexible with this fee. I asked them to keep it safe and I would be back in a few days on Sunday. They said, “No problem, what’s your membership number and we will have it for you?” I came in on Sunday and asked for it. The two staff looked in the lost and found drawer and said they didn’t know where it went but it was definitely in the drawer yesterday. I explained that I did not lose my iPod; they had it in their possession keeping it safe.
Someone from the weekend staff saw it in the drawer and thought oh well look what we have here. No one probably knows it’s here so I will take this home, not realizing that I had called it in. Another staff knew it was mine and the manager and other staff saw it in the drawer but miraculously it has disappeared. I asked what they are going to do about this and the manager is not cooperating and is extremely young (about 20) and she has no idea what to do. This is unacceptable that a staff member would steal my iPod and I don’t get it back.
Yes, if an attorney wants to call me, feel free because this is not right. I know if I lost the iPod that would be my fault or someone stole it out of my locker, that’s my fault. They are not responsible for that I know. But if my item is stolen from a staff member behind the front desk in a safe drawer that they put there to keep my item safe and then it disappears without a trace or an explanation and "oh well customer, sorry" they should be held accountable!

I have heard many horror stories about how people are treated at Planet Fitness locations, but I never thought it would happen to me. Well, it did. I became a member of Planet Fitness located at 840 North Apollo Boulevard, Melbourne, FL in May 2009. Since March 2010, I have brought up some maintenance issues to the gym staff. The light bulbs throughout the gym kept going out one by one over the last couple on months, until only about 50% of the lights were still functioning in May 2010.
During the same period, the AC was broken and lots of members were unhappy about the situation. The gym felt like a semi-dark greenhouse, not an environment conducive to working out. I complained almost weekly to the front desk and the answer I would receive was that there was a maintenance guy who was supposed to take care of the burned out light bulbs and the AC, but nobody knew when he was going to be around.
There were some other problems as well, such as the soap in the restrooms running out, and a case of what I believe is false advertising. In the contract and on the website, they claim that the black card members can buy drinks from the cooler at half price. However, when I went to the gym the sticker on the cooler said that only a few of those drinks, mainly Gatorade and water were qualifying for the half off discount. Since that was not stated in the contract or on their website, I see this as false advertising. After several weeks, the issues were still not corrected so I complained directly on their website, and from what I know copies of the complaints made on their website are sent to the owner and to the Planet Fitness Main Office.
Days later, on June 11, 2010 when I went to the gym, the manager Erica ** rudely informed me that I was no longer welcome in the gym and I had to leave the premises, due to my complaints about the gym. I was beyond shocked to see that instead of apologizing for the inconvenience and fixing the broken lights, AC and so on, they just cancelled my membership. Unbelievable and deeply shocking, I have never been treated like this although I have worked out at many gyms, such as Las Vegas Athletic Club, LA Fitness, World Gym, 24 Hour Fitness, Bally's, Gold's Gym and others.
I have heard before that Planet Fitness staff is generally rude and abusive. They don't try to fix the issues at the gym and they abusively just cancel the memberships of those daring to complain. From my experience, this negative perception of Planet Fitness is real. It is shameful that Planet Fitness is allowed to do this to people. I am still in shock and disbelief that an American business which is so customer unfriendly is allowed to function. It feels like Twilight Zone. The deceiving advertising contributed at my deciding to buy the membership initially. According to my credit card statement, they never refunded me for the period of May 11, 2010 through May 17, 2010. I have emotional scarring, feeling picked on, maybe discriminated since I have an accent. I'm wasting time to find another gym, having to pay higher rates. It is not a judgment free zone.

I was going to Planet Fitness and I had a personal trainer for a couple of days, going twice a week, because on three times that I went to his appointments he was running late and he wanted me to wait at least a half an hour before he could take me. So, each time I went, I told him that I couldn't wait and that I would have to make another appointment, which I did. Then the third time , I asked him if there was another trainer that I could have in place of him, so he gave me a girl trainer who was very good and did a lot more training that was more of a challenge than he was giving me, as I am 55 years old. He didn't seem to be interested in training me even though I signed up with him and already paid for a month and then it would automatically come out of my checking account after that, plus the $20 a month. I told him that all I wanted was a couple of months with the personal trainer.
So, today when I went in for my training appointment the girl trainer, Lori, who is usually always there, didn't come in and I asked a couple of workers if they can call her but they said that they would wait awhile to see if she was running late. Well, after 20 minutes later, I asked again and they tried to call her but couldn't reach her. Then the personal trainer that I changed from approached me, saying that my debit card was rejected and it couldn't take the payment of $275 out for the next month. I told him I was paid up and he asked if I canceled a month before like it said in the contract, and I told him I forgot, as I am so busy it slipped my mind. I then asked him why can't he just take it off of the seven times that I have to make up the times I missed and he said he couldn't do that because he would have to do that to everyone. He (Joe ** ) then told me that I could no longer come there if the payment is not coming out. I told him I was going to exercise now and I walked away and did.
As I was excising, I remembered that I just got a new card after waiting two weeks because I lost my card, so that explained it. When I finished exercising about 25 minutes later, I went back to him and told him about the card. He asked me to get the new card and I told him that I didn't want to pay for another month I couldn't afford. He told me that I had to because I didn't cancel a month ago, so I said well, why can't I cancel now? Joe said that he would need my new card to cancel it. And I said that didn't make sense seeing that the old card is canceled. If he owed me 7 visits that I had to make up, then why couldn't he take my visits that I paid for away from me, so I won't have to owe anything just for one day.
You see, when he made my contract, he broke the sessions up for me because there was no way I could do an hour of personal training each time I went, so an hour he split twice a week instead of once a week. So, I would do 30 minutes twice a week and it worked out just right for me. But, then he told me that I probably canceled all the times I had to make-up the sessions and said that I now owe them for the times I missed!
Then I got really upset and repeated what he said to me out loud and said that was it and walked out very upset! Now I can't go back because he told me I couldn't go there anymore anyway. Oh, and before I got upset, I asked him if there was someone in charge that I can talk to, but he just gave me the Planet Fitness website. I asked for a main number to call and he couldn't find it. He couldn't even find my contract!
I was not treated fairly at all and he made no attempt in helping me, just drove me away! I called and left a message at the corp, headquarters, but I don't think they will return my call because they didn't to others. I would like to know what I can do to protect myself from not owing any money to them like they say! Oh, I forgot to mention that the people working there don't know how to work the computer because when they would make my appointments (when I was seeing Joe) they told me I wasn't supposed to be there, when I would show up for my appointment even though I had it written down. They had it in the computer on the wrong days and every day for two weeks! And I had to tell them more than once that what they had down was wrong! I got very upset and shocked that these people, especially Joe, would treat people that way and not care! And I can't afford to pay more, and didn't even want more sessions! I already paid $275 twice!

He kept quoting the contract. I left very frustrated stating that I would seek legal help.

In the middle of our workout the manager (whom at that time I didn't know was the manager) approached my fiance and told him he couldn't workout with a du-rag on his head and had to take it off, or he couldn't work out. The garment on my fiance's head was equivalent to a swimming cap. Prior to us being at the gym on 3.15.10, when the gym was visited, at no point was this policy communicated to us. If that was told to us initially then we would have never been in that establishment let alone become members. This behavior is unacceptable and racist. This establishment is practicing discrimination on the low. If this was such an important factor of the gym, then why was it never initially communicated?
Also, the fact that when we initially joined the gym, my fiance wore that exact garment on his head and worked out for about two hours and was never told he couldn't have that head garment they consider to be a du-rag on his head. It was embarrassing and definitely discriminatory for them to have such a policy. If someone is working out, they should be able to wear whatever they want on their head. Head gear doesn't affect the persona of working out, it's your foot wear and garments worn to the gym. This has caused emotional distress and confusion as to how can racism still be so blatantly visible and be so underlined. They are still trying to charge me for the month of March 17, 2010 stating that this is their billing cycle, and have not refunded my deposit.

I joined Planet Fitness over a year ago. Recently, I have been using two machines that are in the circuit training part. There's this woman who uses the circuit also. A few weeks ago, I was using one of two arm machines in that area. This woman went to the manager and told them that I wasn't using the circuit properly. They told me about it. I asked them if they could move the two machines out of the circuit, they said no.
Today, I was using those two machines again and the woman again went to the manager and complained about me. The manager, Gabe, came up to me and explained the way the circuit works. That if I want to use those two machines, I have to wait for the other person to complete their training. I complied. I was so frustrated with this woman that I went up to her and told her to mind her own business.
She started yelling at me and cursing. I admit that I got a little loud also. We went up to the front desk where she lied and said that I threatened her. The manager pulled out a form and cancelled my membership! There was no talking to him. He told me I was a problem and he proceeded to cancel me. I asked if there was anyone else I could talk to about this. He said no, that he was in charge of all of it, but someone would call me later.
So far, I have not gotten that phone call. I am aggravated because I like going there. I have never had any problems before this. I don't understand why I couldn't get a phone number for a district manager or someone with more authority than Gabe. This gym is very close to my house. I want my membership renewed.

I was a member of Planet Fitness, (starting in 2006), and because of the compromised facility and the unprofessional and lowly staff, I decided to cancel my membership. I requested cancelation several times at the gym and was told it would be taken care of and it was not. My credit card used to pay membership was stolen and I had it replaced. I wrote Planet Fitness about 6-8 times requesting cancelation but even though they cannot collect, they continue to send me monthly bills including service charges. In the last year I have been to the gym, called on the phone, and wrote to request cancelation to no avail. The bills continue to come, and rise, and they continue to refuse to cancel my membership. I joined Planet Fitness in Jamaica, NY around April 2009. The first and only time I went to the gym was in April. When I left the gym that morning, I was assaulted while going to my car. Luckily, a passerby chased the person away and as soon as I got home, I called Planet Fitness to cancel my membership. I was told by a young man on the phone that he was sorry to hear what had happened and would take care of everything.
I didn't think about it after that until August when my husband asked me if I was still going to the gym. When I told him no, he said that the membership was still being deducted from our account. I called the gym again in August and was told by a young woman that someone would contact me about canceling my membership. It wasn't until November that I finally spoke with the manager, Cliff ***, that I was told that I needed to send a letter, return receipt, requesting cancellation, but that in the meantime, he would reimburse me November's payment.
On November 17th, a certified return receipt letter went out. I received the green card back signed. Yesterday, I went to the bank only to find out that yes, they did reimburse me a payment in November but only after they double charged me, so actually I was never reimbursed. And now in December, they have taken out another payment from my account. I'm wondering now if Small Claims Court is my only option in this matter. I too would like to know if there is a class action against Planet Fitness. Let it be known I am not "judgment free." They are playing with my money without my permission.

I joined and was treated like a piece of trash. The equipment is not properly maintained and the staff is not trained at all and must be paid very poorly based on the attitudes. I learned a valuable lesson. You get what you pay for! At $10 a month, it is not realistic to train staff in customer service, much less attract quality people or maintain equipment. I have stopped looking for deals that are too good to be true and joined a reputable gym that is more expensive but cares about its members, not their $10.

He said I can't work out because I didn't pay for the gym. I provided my bank statement for six months that shows my bank is paying and I have proof of six months statement, but he won't believe me and said that I have to quit gym. He did not allow me to enter the gym. I went at night after work to resolve the problem again. He was not there so I left a note for him. He called me on my home phone and told me why I went to the gym and said that I wasn't allowed to. I told him I just came to fix the problem but he won't listen on anything I have to say. I placed a number of calls to that location and received no response. At that point I canceled my credit card.
I have most recently been in contact with Brian ** of this location who refuses to cancel my membership without a $58.00 buyout, which in fact Planet Fitness owes me money because I canceled before the three-day legal contract grace period. I completed a cancellation form which he refused to process. He was completely pompous and unprofessional and displayed no customer service. He also refused to give me any contact of a higher level that can assist me, being I never even worked out at the gym. In February, I joined the Biloxi Gym Planet Fitness and wrote a blog post mocking some of their more inane practices. Since then, going there has been uneventful and boring; nobody there has so much as said "hi," but neither has anything made my experience there awful. When I got there today, however, after being greeted with the usual request for my gym ID number, I was told that my membership had been canceled. What's more, it had been canceled over a month ago, on April 30, with no notice to me. Why? The lady at the front desk could not tell me. She called her boss, but it took 15 minutes to get an answer. Finally, the reply comes that my account has been canceled "in reference to some things that were said on the Internet."
Wow. Really? If that's referring to what I wrote, it doesn't say much for the self-esteem of the owners of this Planet Fitness that they surf the Internet looking for comments about their gym. But it says even less about their respect for their customers that they would actually cancel my membership without telling me based on an opinion that was posted on a tiny blog three months ago. I am starting to understand their business model, though. The $60 startup fee is a sweet deal for them when they can cancel your membership after two months. Well, guess what, Planet Fitness, that's a disrespectful behavior. The community gym here is more welcoming than you, and they have no budget and something like 15 machines. Others have summed up what's wrong with Planet Fitness here, and I'll just add one thing: your basic refusal to treat customers like adults.

I was among many customers who had their bank cards reissued after a fraud alert. I had to redo paperwork and give them the new card number. They sent out a notice that said they would refund the fee they imposed if I was among one of those customers. I was, but they still charged my bank card the additional fee.
I asked them about it and they said to just give them a voided check and they would take it out of my checking account without the fee and cancel the bank card transaction. I was confused as to why, their explanations did not make any sense to me, I don't even know still why I had to do it that way. I asked for a receipt or something on paper proving they canceled the bank card transaction and they wouldn't give me anything. The guy that came over to help the lady said they don't do that saying, “Don't worry we guarantee you'll never be double charged.” So I looked in my account today June 3rd and they took out 39 more dollars (I just paid them on May 28th).
I called them thinking they double charged me and the lady said it was my annual fee. I asked her why someone didn't mention that to me and why I didn't receive any reminder in the mail. She said to me, “Well, last year people were cancelling when we reminded them because May would have been the latest time for you to cancel your account.” I said, “Well how was I supposed to remember that? I don't have any money in that account because I just had the issue with changing cards and accounts with you guys the other day,” and she said, “It's on your contract. Last evening, I left Planet Fitness Club in Levittown, PA (from here on referenced as PFC) with my husband and minor daughter very emotionally upset and embarrassed after being treated unprofessionally and disrespectfully by a male employee. My departure was overseen by two police officers inside the PFC and four additional officers outside between a second patrol car and a police van all parked alongside the facility's full view front window and witnessed by a near capacity-filled PFC.
Enclosed, please find a copy of my membership agreement. I enrolled at this location on March 17, 2009. The membership card number is the exact number assigned on my contract. I arrived at PFC, presented the membership card which was given to me at enrollment and requested my daughter enrolled on my membership. The desk representative informed me that my membership number was attached to another name. She searched her system entering various requested information from me for about 10 minutes. A second desk representative came over to help and began the questioning process all over again. She stated that she remembered seeing us in the facility before as this was not my husband's or my first workout session. Approximately 20 minutes later, I suggested that they look for my records while we worked out. The representative agreed, wrote my personal information and address on paper and requested me back to the counter before leaving.
Approximately twenty minutes into our workout, a male employee approached my treadmill and stated that I needed to pay for my daughter. I advised him that I spoke to the desk representative, had waited to pay and that I would return to the desk at the end. He walked away, then returned 10 minutes later and stated that he wanted me to pay now. I reiterated that I would talk to him when I finished. He walked away and apparently called the police. Immediately after his second interruption, my daughter informed me that she no longer wanted to exercise, terminated her workout and sat in the front waiting area.
When the police arrived, the male employee told them in my presence that I didn't have a membership, that I gave them a card which belonged to someone else, that I refused to pay and that he felt threatened by me. I was rudely interrupted from using services I paid for. I had my membership card taken away and insulted by this man's false allegations. One of the officers pulled me to the side, questioned me and wrote a report while inside the PFC. I immediately left and had to assure my daughter that the police were not going to follow us home or arrive at our home later that night to arrest me. I have never been treated so incredulously by anyone before. I was unable to sleep last night. I continue to feel emotionally nervous when thinking about this incident.
My family and I were extremely embarrassed and upset by the actions of this male employee. I do not understand why I was harassed when I did what I was authorized to do. Please contact me directly for I deserve an explanation for your employee's actions and why my enrollment information or documentation could not be located. I am extremely concerned since that documentation contained my personal and credit card information which, by law, PFC is expected to protect.

I terminated membership back on August 7th, 2007. At which time I also paid up any dues they asked for since my credit card was renewed and they weren't able to deduct past fees. He said he took care of it in the computer system. That was the last day I was in that gym (8/7/07).
About 5 months later I noticed on my VISA statement that they were still charging me a monthly membership fee of $10 which totaled $50 for the five months. After I told them about it they said that they had no record of me terminating membership and that they weren't going to refund my money. So at this time I am trying to recover the $50 that they continued to charge me even after membership was terminated.

Today, 5 months later, I got a letter in the mail from a collections agency asking for $62.94. I never received anything from Planet Fitness. When I called they said it was because I technically never canceled since I didn't pay for my September membership. I have been a Gym goer with Planet Fitness for over a year (begin date 9/11/07). I discovered private training was available so I was introduced to the person in charge of the training (Jack A. Landauer). He said that he offered a 3 month program of different times a week for a certain amount per month to be charged to my account each month for 3 months, and that at the end of the program no further monthly charges would be made. We came to the agreement that I would join the 8 times a month for 3 months at $200 per month, and at the end of my program I would train on my own with no further charges. I trained from 6/13/07 to 9/13/07 as specified on the contract. My trainer Dennis informed me of my last session and bid me farewell and good luck on my personal training, I was very happy with the the training and said I would rejoin sometime in the future.
On Sept 19,2007 Planet Fitness charged my account $216.05: my monthly gym fee plus a private training overcharge, overdrawing my account, for I did not expect the charge. I went to see Jack at the gym but he said he had no time to see me, that he would offer me an addititonal 10 sessions, and it was management that was at fault--and only he (Al Fersack) could resolve the matter. I called the gym numerous times but Al was always busy with a customer or in a meeting, that he would be advised and would contact me at the end of the day. No call ever came. I visited the gym numerous times, and Al was always busy at a meeting; Jack would not schedule an appointment to see me or explain my contract; and when I would run into Al he would tell me that Jack was the one who wrote up the contract wrong, that instead of being overcharged $200 I would have been overcharged $400, and that he had actually saved me $200, and that he would reconsider making any changes and call me at the end of the day.
To date no one has bothered to speak to me. They have avoided me and are rude when I have attempted to speak to them--always pointing towards the other guy. Customer service has been non-existent. I don't know what else to do for I Am never responded to.
This has caused me a great deal of stress at home, at work, and feeling this ripped off feeling. The money was taken from my account, although each one, Jack and Al admit that an error was made in the other's part. Neither takes the responsibility. I hope to find an answer to this problem for it is driving me crazy.
