We bought our 1st Sleep Number Bed with the Flex Fit Sleep System. Many times we were reassured by salesman that they had a 30 day return policy if we were not happy. We purchased the Split King and did not like the split, nor did we like the Flex Fit system as the massager is entirely too loud. We called the sales person and was then told that yes, we could swap out mattresses but the Flex Fit System was not a part of their return policy. "It clearly states this on page 2 of our terms and conditions, no different than buying a used car. You need to make sure you read everything you are signing." This is what we were told by the sales person.
Yes it was on page 2 and we obviously did sign it, but why was it that he never verbally said anything about this; very, very unprofessional. He literally said 10+ times if you don't like it, you can just return it. But not once did he say, well everything except the $3,500 Flex Fit system. I will totally take responsibility for not stopping and completely reading through the "Terms and Conditions", but you would have thought that there would be no comparison in buying a used car and a Sleep Number Bed. Live and learn I guess.

I have had a Select Comfort bed for 15+ years and am still using the same and top. It is very comfortable and I have had no mechanical issues. I did have a back problem and I was sent an egg crate mattress at no charge to firm the mattress for me. That was very customer-friendly. This weekend, I purchased a Memory Foam bed with the adjustable base. I'm excited to take delivery and put the current bed in my guest room.

Beware of Sleep Number bed. The bed was so uncomfortable. It is nothing but a glorified air mattress that left me laying on the box spring. It sits very low to the ground. They tell you that if you return it, you lose your shipping costs but they don't tell you that you will also pay to return it and have to buy boxes. They should have left me the boxes. Instead, I had to pay $30 for boxes and $60 to ship it back on top of them keeping my $170 that it cost for the original shipping. I would not recommend this bed to my worst enemy. The material is worth about what I paid for shipping rather than the cost of the bed. My back was killing me after sleeping on it for one night. You would be better off buying an air mattress from Walmart. At least they won't charge you to bring it back.

We purchased our Sleep Number bed in 2006. At first, it was okay, but the last two years, my husband and I wake up every morning with back pain. His side loses air and the middle of the bed has a hole that we both roll into. I called customer service and salesperson said I would have to pay $80 for a piece of foam that goes in middle of bed to stop us from rolling to the middle. I purchased it and tried it for a couple of months but still waking up with back pain. I called back and the salesperson said I would have to pay $110 for the air chambers with zipper in the middle of the bed, but we are still rolling to the middle. This company does not stand by its warranty and I wouldn't recommend them to anyone!

The remote control stopped showing the number that it is set on. I was told that this type of control is no longer manufactured. I would have to buy another one at a cost of $120 plus shipping. The bed comes with a 20-year warranty but the part is prorated. It seems unfair for them to upgrade the product and then charge for the upgrade. Thank you.

We bought the P5 bed. We received it on Aug. 8, 2012. First night I slept on it, it felt nowhere near the one we tried at the store. The one at the store was very soft and conformed to my body. This bed had no softness whatsoever. I thought it was just me. I kept trying different settings, but every setting was causing some kind of discomfort. The bed in the store didn't.
After three nights on this bed, my wife made the comment about having problems. We realized we both thought it was just ourselves until this. When I called the Service Department and told them to come get this bed and why, I was told that they would send me a thicker piece of foam. This just made me suspect I was right. The beds in the store are built differently than the one you receive. I said, “No, just give me an RMA so I could get this bed out of here.” I was told they couldn't issue that until I had had the bed for 30 nights. I told them that I would not feel any different after 30 days than I do now. I said that if I had to, I would get a lawyer and look into their return policy. She then said they sometimes grant exceptions and put me on hold for 30 seconds. She came back on and I received my RMA and was told there were three return options. I said I know those options and will gladly pay the $200 for them to come and get it, although I don't understand how you can have a 30 in-house free trial and still have to pay for them to come get it?
We did get the flex fit the base. I was told by the salesperson that the base was not returnable after we had completed the sale. At the time, it didn't matter. The bed we chose at the store felt great. They say they can't take the base back, because it is not their base. Well that's amazing because the tag on the base says it is made especially for Sleep Number. So that is a bunch of crap. After reading all these complaints and doing some research, I feel the reason is this is how they make lots of money because of their false methods of selling their beds and the number that get returned. They have at least a good 90% markup on these bases. I will not recommend them, but I will not say don't buy on. What I tell people is to do their homework and really check these beds out. I wish I would have found this site before we bought.

I have been having back pain ever since I had this Sleep Number bed. I tried to call and get them to come and get it and he asked me to try it again, which I did and it still hurt my back. Then I forgot and the time ran out. Then my little control stop working. I cannot see the number and when I called, they said because they don't use that kind no more, I would have to pay $100 for deductible. Nobody told me that I would have to be paying a deductible, almost $2,000 gone down the drain. And each time I move, we had to take it down and put it back together. Such a mistake. Now, I am stuck with $2,000 worth of junk.

One and half years after purchasing a king-sized Sleep Number bed, I feel qualified in commenting on it. My husband and I both have bad backs, and we purchased this elaborate air-filled bed with the hopes of alleviating our pain. Instead, it has increased our discomfort. Whenever one of us gets out of the bed, the inner mattress goes off balance and the other person rolls downhill. The air also leaks out of the bed causing us to constantly readjust it. I have not had a good night's sleep on this bed in months and it is getting worse. I'm really not happy about investing a lot of money in something that should perform as advertised. I wish we had purchased a high quality conventional mattress. Never again.

I had problem in Jan. 2012. They said I needed a new motor as it was losing air. I replaced the motor with the remote and had to pay $275. This August, the chamber is still losing air. They had me cap it off and guess what, it's still losing air. Now, I need to replace the bed which is now going to cost me $125. They are not what they brag about. I have been also having real bad lower back pains and now that I am sleeping on the recliner for the last couple of months, my back is great.

I cancelled an order worth over $6,000 before it was delivered because we found out it would not fit our existing bedframe (we were told at the store that it would fit any king size bed). I was told the refund would be processed within 10 days. After 10 days, I called and they said it would be another 14 days before they could process it because of a glitch in the system. I asked what the glitch was and they said the warehouse failed to acknowledge the cancellation. That is not a glitch. It is a failure to do your job! I cannot get through to anyone that I want my money back now.

Hi Marcia, thanks for taking the time to share this with us. I'm sorry to hear about the trouble you had with your refund settling! I looked into this for you and see that your refund settled the day after you posted this (8/30/12) and I wanted to offer my assistance if you've had any other trouble with that refund.
I hope to have the chance to talk with you soon, Marcia!

Soon after I purchased it, the zipper to the mattress went offtrack. I complained and was told it could be replaced for $253.00. The mattress kept losing air causing two trenches. I was told to keep readjusting the remote control which did no help. I complained for a 3rd time about my 2 existing problems and I was told at 56 percent of warranty, my problems would cost $370.00 to replace. These problems occurred soon after purchase. I feel that due to faulty craftsmanship, I paid $3,339.45 for this bed with a 20-year warranty. I am still paying for its upkeep $370.00, which I cannot afford. I asked this company to please give whatever percentage is left on this warranty and I will return the bed and buy a regular bed. I am very angry and dissatisfied and I still have the same problems.

After purchasing bed and using it for four years, one of the twin mattresses began losing air. I called customer service and spoke to a rude customer service person who tried to convince me that the cause of the leaking "O" ring was not a manufacturing defect and under warranty. Well, it kind of was under the warranty because he would sell me another mattress for $100. There was no way to repair the connector or replace the "O" ring. Are you kidding me? Their idea of warranty service is to require a customer to purchase a complete new unit at a reduced price ($100) after four years of use when they claim to have a 20-year warranty on the product. I wish I had found this website before purchasing two of the Sleep Number units. I would never recommend the purchase of this product or dealing with this company to anyone.

We were at the Woodland Hills Mall and tried out several of the sleep number beds. Both I and my wife decided on the Pillow top style bed (King Size Select Comfort, Sleep Number Bed); and with my credit, we decided to place a $2,000.00 down payment and charge the rest and have monthly payments on the remaining balance. The bed arrived; and while I was at work, the installers came and set up our new sleep number bed. After the bed was set up, my wife noticed that it was not the bed we wanted or selected at the store; and she called the store and told them that they delivered the wrong bed! They told here that they would check and get back with her.
Well I guess you know what happened after that. Yes, they never called back; and when my wife called again, they acted like they never talked to her. This went on for months. She would call and never get anyone to help. Then, I tried to speak with someone; same results. I did of sorts give up on ever getting any satisfaction form this company, but not my wife; she called them every month for several years until she did get a pillow top slip over sent to her as a pillow top mattress (not the one we ordered that would have been a zip on style… no, the slip over style). After a return call, the rep my wife spoke with this time told her that he would try and get her the zipper style. But that never happened.
Now that they have admitted they were in the wrong by shipping a free slip over pillow to style mattress, they backed out and now saying we got the bed we ordered! We tried sleeping on the slip over style. However, this turned out to be very uncomfortable and we could not stand sleeping on it any longer. It was removed and she started calling again and complaining again. Clear up, to the CEO of the company. Now she is setting up to start (picketing) on the corner of 71st Street, just outside of Woodland Hills Mall. That Select Comfort, the maker of sleep number beds, takes your money and gives you a cheaper bed behind your back! What a Company! You will never make the 500 club!

In January 2012, the bed was delivered to our home. The total cost was $2,576.72, which included $169.99 setup and delivery charge, pillow and two sheet sets. Before the 30-trial period was up, it was necessary for us to go to Florida. We returned home to find the bed very soft. We pumped it up to the 100 mark, laid down to set our comfort level, only to find that the control hoses were not properly installed (switched so the left control operated the right side of the bed and the right control operated the left side of the bed). At the time, we thought that we could deal with that, just had to make sure that we needed to push the opposite control button.
Over time we found that after a few days at our designated comfort setting, it seemed the bed was very soft. When we pushed the button on the control to attempt to raise the control setting back to 100 (to start over), it would drop anywhere from 20 to 25-30 points from the previous selected comfort setting before the pump would kick on. We revisited the store where the salesman gave us some caps, told us to switch the hoses and then called the customer service. Upon calling customer service, they attempted to "walk me through" the instructions to test the pump or to see if an "o" ring might be the cause of the incorrect pressure point. I told her that it was not possible for me to get down on the floor, unzip the cover and attempt to make the repair myself and that the fact that it was installed wrong to begin with, I thought they should be responsible for the adjustments to make the bed as comfortable as they advertise.
The customer service rep told me for them to come out to our home, it would cost another $169.99 to come out and adjust it. I don't care how easy/simple they said it would be, it is their responsibility to fix it. Their "lifetime" warranty, it's not worth the paper it's printed on. The bed itself is terrible. No comfort. I would not recommend this company at all. We were also told that the person who referred us would get a $50.00 gift card, which was never received. I was told there was nothing in the contract about that. So, their sales force (at least some of them) lie to potential customers to get them to buy their junk.

My husband and I bought a Sleep Number Bed following my husband’s back surgery. We ended up having more back pain than before purchasing the bed despite adjusting the firmness of the bed. This bed is nothing more than an air mattress. Save your money and just buy an air mattress from Walmart. Also, the commercial said great for couples, only if they have the same Sleep Number. My husband prefers a more firm bed than I, and most nights he ended up rolling into my side. It is only separated by a small amount of foam. Very disappointed.

I told the salesman when I needed the bed and was assured that the bed would arrive on time. Today I got a slack message from the company that because of an upper management mistake (yes, I have this on my answering machine) that my bed would be delayed for a week. Can you believe this? You would think that the company would do whatever it could to keep customers such as myself happy. The company has changed a lot. Do they care at all? Is this the "we will service you no matter what?" Right.

My husband and I purchased a P6 bed and was very excited to finally have a wonderful, comfortable bed. Well, that didn't happen. We tried all of their suggestions and had to finally just tell them that we had given it our best effort but we wanted to return it. They still insisted we could try some other things. The worse part is it is costing close to $400 by the time it was set up (10 minutes) and return it. The salesman said that you could return it, but forgot to mention the $200 cost. It was an expensive lesson.

We bought the Sleep Number bed in 2007. We paid close to $2,000 for the adjustable base. We have only used the remote to raise the head about 2 inches until the last week where I decided to read in bed. After three times, we heard a huge bang and something broke under the bed. My husband called this morning after looking under the bed and a customer service person said it would cost $177 for a part that they think will fix it. We would have to hire someone to put the part on. I think when you pay this much money, it should really last longer than 3 to 4 times of use. At this point, Sleep Number has lost a satisfied customer. I would never recommend as they do not back up what they tell people. Sleep Number just passes you on to the base manufacturer.

My husband and I purchased the bed about 5 years ago. We do like the bed although there is an issue with one side. Of course, it is my side. I feel like I'm sleeping on a bit of a hill. Changing the firmness doesn't seem to correct the problem, and we have taken everything apart and put it back together but that didn't help. I do put up with it because this is the only bed that doesn't cause me to wake up with muscle spasms in my back the next day. We didn't buy the remote with the number display, because we didn't want the added expense. The only drawback to that is when you try a different setting, it is hard to get it back to exactly where I like it. At the beginning, I did contact customer service about the slope in the bed and they sent us another inset for my side without any questions. They did say that they had never heard that complaint before, and I'm sure that is a bold-faced lie since I've seen it numerous times in reviews.

We visited the store in a mall in OKC on July 1, 2012. We tried out several beds and then decided to purchase a King Pillowtop Mattress set. We waited for two weeks to go by and no one ever called. Finally after 3 weeks, someone called to set up a date, a delivery date on 7/27/2012 was set up and we were told they would call us on the day to confirm delivery. The 27th came and went. I called them on the 28th and was told they did not show a delivery to be setup on the 27th, so the lady set us up for 8/1/2012.
During this whole process, I asked to have a manager call me, but no one ever called me back. Finally when they called today and said they were going to be bringing the bed out, I told the driver that unless a manager called me to clear up several issues we had that I would not be taking the bed. He told me that he would have someone call me asap, that call never happened either. So I told them I did not want the bed.
Here are the issues I had with these people. First, the warranty does not cover labor (but the manager of the store told us it did). Second, the warranty does not cover the owner installing a part that was sent to them under warranty and the owner ends up breaking, say, a fitting trying to put the new hose on (again we were told it was covered). Third, the store manager told us that if they took our current bed when they brought the new one and in 30 days we did not like the new bed, they would return our old bed to us. Incorrect, once they leave your house with the old bed, even if you call them the next morning, they will not return you old bed. This company prides itself on getting you a better night's sleep, but instead they just rip you off with their lies and false promises. Do not buy a bed from these guys!

If you are not satisfied, we'll even pay the return shipping fee." Our bed arrived about a month ago, an I8, queen with raising head and foot options (mattress slips each time head is elevated). After a few nights of adjustments, we were comfortable but we decided we wanted a California king (wider and longer).
I called customer service regarding upgrade. After some tense discussion, they said they would take the frame back for a $500 restocking fee, even though we are willing to buy the upgraded king version (approx. $2500 more). He initially said the frame was not returnable (per the sales order form). I asked for a formal quote on the upgrade and their mailing address (for possible False Advertising action). I bought a king size adjustable bed (the head & foot goes up and down). I am almost 60 yrs old and disabled. And they knew that when I bought the bed. On the first night after they set it up, they were closed and my bed hung in an L-shape. I was very sick and I had to sleep on a hospital bed in another room. It flipped me on the floor and the EMTS had to come out and put me back on. On the next day, it was fixed by my husband after calling them and troubleshooting it myself. My mattress has slid on my bed at about a foot ever since I have had it. I called them yesterday and spoke to a supervisor. I was told that they have no one to troubleshoot my bed, so I have to do it myself. I couldn't pick up the mattress to see if it was a factory defect or not (to see if the screws are tight or if there is a tear). But if I can find a man who's strong enough to troubleshoot it and it is a factory defect, then I can pay $169.00 for someone to come and fix it. I will probably have to junk a $6000.00 bed and buy another kind, because I have no one to help me! So, I towed my water bed down. UPS never showed up. I wrote emails to Dan ** letting him know what was going on. He never called me back. Then, I called customer service on Saturday afternoon, thinking maybe UPS would bring the order before noon. They said I was in another state and George said it would be here soon that day.
Then Sunday went by. On Monday, they never called me until 3:30. James asked me to call him; I did . They gave me another man saying the same thing, it's not them, it's UPS. He said that they lost the order in the state MD and reordered on Saturday but never called me. Your no good salesman does that. He doesn't know what to tell me. He said I got mad and said goodbye.
Then, I asked my wife to call in. She got some lady saying she has a high job. She said to me, "what do you want me to do?" not offering anything that would help, just saying the same thing as before, "its on way." I'm just tired of the lies. I told them I don't even want the bed. If this is how a customer's order is shipped out, why not ship all together at the time? It's from their company. They placed the orders in the boxes, not UPS. I have had 2 back surgeries and this is the worst bed I have ever slept on in my life. The floor is more comfortable. They sent a couple of products to make it better, but it did not. I would also have to pay them an additional $200 to pick up the top of the bed. I would still be stuck with the base and would only get back less than a third of what I paid for the bed. I was told by customer service that they would let the district manager know so they could do more training with the salesman. How does this help me? Then, I would still have to go purchase another bed. I will not ever recommend this company to anyone due to the dishonest and misleading practices. The Sleep Number p5 bed took 2 weeks to arrive and was delivered in 3 small shipping boxes. It took the delivery men 10 minutes to set it up. Seeing that shocked us. The first night, we didn't get any quality sleep. We have tried numerous settings and nothing helps. The bed sits so low it looks like a toddler bed. It is basically made of an air mattress, a few pieces of foam and a plastic base. Our salesman lied about how much we would be out if we didn't like it. It was $200 for delivery and that was supposed to be what we would be out total.
That’s the first lie. It is actually that plus the same for return. I read so many negative reviews and didn’t listen. Friends told us that we would hate it and we didn't listen to them. We saved for a year for this bed. I am so upset we are out $400 for nothing. Plus, we bought the mattress pad and the sheet set which does not work on regular mattresses. So the total is over $600. Customer service was not sympathetic at all. This is where they make money, not on satisfied customers.

However, the replacement mattress cover has a flaw in its construction that would save them lots of money and cut the cost for us. CS was very accommodating. We are still sorry we purchased it. They need a consumer council where we can tell them about our problems.

Sleep number is the worst company to deal with ever! I tried the bed, didn't like it. No problem, I have 30 days to return it, no questions asked. I called the place I got it from and listened to 15 minutes of excuses as to why it was my fault the bed was not comfortable. When I finally said to come get this bed and bring my old one back, they said they didn't keep the old one. I was specifically told that the old bed would be returned! That is one of the major reasons I got this bed. I am telling all of my friends in person, on Facebook, strangers I meet on the street, everyone to stay away from these crooks.

I did contact the store on several occasions telling them I had difficulty finding my number and not sleeping well. They advised to give it time and the correct way to find the setting. Due to my own misunderstanding of the trial period, I waited too long to return the bed. I contacted customer services and told them how uncomfortable the bed is and that the mattress cover was bunching up after only a few months. They went over things to make us more comfortable and sent a new cover and a new pad. What really upsets me is that we have to take the entire bed apart to put on this new cover that I think will just bunch up again. They have no in-home service after the sale. We are both disabled with back problems and we have to install it?

We bought the bed with a remote and a tech set it up for us in 2006. Immediately, I noted that it was merely two air mattresses with some foam over the top. The first big problem I noted was my husband and I were on really different numbers. So, since his side was softer, I kept sliding down towards him all night. After years of this, there was a permanent dip in the middle and when we contacted the company, we were told that they knew this would happen and they wanted us to purchase a "shelf" to correct it. My hubby stuffed the middle with an old comforter and sheets to even up the bed. The remote only works intermittently and I no longer sleep well on it.
When we originally purchased it, we used their financing. We made all the payments as requested and after it was paid off, they sent me a bill for a stupid amount like $4.00. I paid it, only to get another bill for something like $0.26. No, I am not kidding. The interest was accruing faster than we could pay it off and the rep I spoke to actually threatened to put that on our credit - yes, the $0.26. I overpaid it and guess what? They never refunded the difference. Go figure. We just purchased a new mattress that is being delivered today. All I can say is go buy two air mattresses and place them on a box spring. It is the same thing, throw a pillow top over it and you have your own homemade bed. Do not waste your money.

I had the P4 mattess and really liked it. However, I switched from a full to a queen bed and so I bought the C4 bed in August 2011 for my queen. It was so bad I returned it and got an upgrade to the one I had before, the P4. It is not the same bed. The bed is advertised with an 11" height. Mine is barely 9". The SC tech said you do not measure the side of the bed, you measure in the middle. What a load of crap. How do you measure a bed in the middle? Anyway, I have had the bed almost 1 year and have not had one night of good sleep on it. I wake up stiff. I can hardly walk. My lower back and hips hurt constantly. No matter what number I put it on, I feel like I am sleeping on a hard, uncomfortable air mattress.
When I finally called SC, which I kept forgetting to do until every night when I got into bed and then it was too late, they were worthless. He suggested I spend even more money to buy more foam for the top to make it comfortable. I spent $2,100 for this bed and now I have to spend more money to make it comfortable? The company should be run out of town on a rail. I know lots of people love this bed. But as far as I am concerned, do not buy a Select Comfort Number bed.

After looking for the remote, we finally called the company to see what we could do to inflate the bed since without the remote, the bed is useless. We were told we had to buy a new remote and with tax and shipping, it would be $86.00. With no other recourse, we ordered the remote and within the next couple of days, we found the old remote on the same day the new remote arrived two day UPS that took three days. When I called to ask to return the new remote, I was told Sleep Number will not accept the remote and be thankful now that both my wife and I have our own personal remotes. We put the order on hold (out of town for a death in the family) and they shipped it immediately. We asked that the sheets ordered with the bed be cancelled since we bought the sheets at the retail outlet; instead, they shipped the sheets and charged us twice. We spent hours on the phone with customer service covering their mistakes and were offered nothing in return. And that's only part of it. We found www.consumersaffairs.com and saw that out of 704 reviews that they only got less than 2 stars. Then, we cancelled the whole order and are hoping for a refund in 21 days. I exercised my right to return and they will charge me $199.99 for someone to pick it up or I can break it down for 3 prepaid labels of $29.99 each. I purchased the bed for my husband three years ago, and we have nothing but problems with the bed, from the remote to the framework in general. My biggest complaint is there is no customer service when there are problems. I was told by an employee to go get my neighbor to help me. I am 75 years old and unable to get down on the floor to see or repair the problem. Needless to say, I was very angry. The bottom line is, after just three years, I have thrown the bed into the junk pile. The last thing to happen was the plastic panels that were replaced. I paid for it, and it was installed by an outside contractor from The Sleep Number Company. They were not installed properly, and the bed collapsed during the night. My husband is a heavy man and disabled, but he is within the total weight level.
It took me over 15 minutes to get him out of bed with the help of a rehab strap. Please note that out of the last years, he has spent approximately 9 months at different times in a rehab unit. He is the only one who slept on the piece of junk. The company had just replaced the air pump and the remote, which were never installed, as I was unable to get down to unplug and plug in the new pump. But it wasn't needed, as the bed has been destroyed. I would say over $2,000 for a bed for three years is kind of pricey. I would never recommend this bed to anyone.

Sleep Number (Select Comfort Corp) needs some major help. Our order was bungled every step of the way. We visited a Sleep Number company store because the spouse and I like different mattress firmness. But I also toss and turn a lot which can be tough to tolerate, so we also wanted to buy two twins and put them side-by-side. The salesman told us that would be an expensive solution and calculated how much we would save by sticking with a king. What a mistake. Don't buy this brand if you are easily awakened by your spouse's movements.
After 2 weeks of miserable sleep, we called to arrange returning the bed under the no-risk trial offer and that's when the 800# rep told us the salesman neglected to mention the 'split king' option. This version is two side-by-side twins that share a motor, so it's only about $100 difference versus the bed we were sold. We agreed to exchange our king for the split-king and paid the upcharge. We were told the replacement bed will be expedited and will arrive in a few days. I thought that sounded a little fast, since the first bed took nearly 3 weeks to arrive - they claim to make each bed to order but I think the company just needs that time to fumble along.
We waited and waited but still had no word on our replacement. After nearly 3 weeks, I called and was told our order was hung up in the accounting dept for some unknown reason. It hadn't even been processed yet and I barely got an apology from the rep. We'd have to wait another 3 weeks or so. We decided that more empty promises weren't worth waiting for and arranged for the bed to be returned as originally planned. The price to return it? $200 to have them pick it up (or ship it yourself and save perhaps $20 if you can find some big boxes). Ouch! Added to the original delivery fee, this is one expensive 'no risk' trial offer. A Sleep Number bed may be fine for some people, but good luck if something goes wrong buying, maintaining or returning it because these folks are lost.

Arbitrarily re-sets to a rock hard setting during the night - We purchased our Sleep Number bed about 3 years ago and for about 2 years, it was OK. Now over the past year, we have been having problems with it, but of course, it is not under warranty and the store where we bought it said to contact the company. But we haven't had much luck contacting them either. We are going to start shopping for a new mattress this weekend and get rid of the Sleep Number bed. If I had to do it over, I would never have purchased this bed and I would not recommend it. I expect to get more than 2-3 years out of a mattress.
The main problem we have had is the bed doesn't stay on the same setting throughout the night. It arbitrarily resets itself to some other number, usually much harder than what I set it on, and I wake up very stiff and sore from this. My perfect number is 45 or 50 and my husband likes 50 or 55. I typically go to bed about an hour or two before he does. When I go to bed, I put my side on 45 and my husband's on 55. When my husband comes to bed, my side resets to 90 or 100 and I wake up and can't get back to sleep. I try resetting the number to where it should be and the remote "says" it is on 45, but the bed still feels hard as a rock. This happened again last night and I am sore! I have enough problems with stiff back and neck without the bed doing this to me. The couch in the living room is more comfortable and I've had to go for weeks at a time sleeping out there because I can't stand the rock-hard sleep number bed.
My husband doesn't experience this because his side is still comfortable so this has become a source of stress and argument about whether to get rid of the Sleep Number bed before I have to spend another night like this (me) or whether to keep trying to fix it and not waste money on a new mattress (him). The other problem we have had is that over the past year, it gradually sank down so it feels like your head is going down and your feet are up. We can't turn it around because of the way the pump is set up. If I sleep with my head going down, I wake up with a massive headache and sinus congestion. And again, this is not something that I expect from a bed, to wake up feeling worse than when I went to sleep. So now when I do sleep on this bed, I have to put my head at the foot board.

I bought my Sleep Number bed in 1997, long before they were called that. Before that, I used to sleep three hours/night and wake up unable to stand up straight. I took a risk buying this bed based on a fellow nurse's positive response. For me, it turned out to be a godsend. I told everyone I knew that I would take a mortgage out on this bed as it truly saved my life. Over time, it developed a slow leak on one side and I would have to inflate it maybe once every two weeks.
I recently went into Maplewood Mall, MN to help a friend buy her Sleep Number bed and they offered me the fix for my leaker by plugging it with a cap. I figured, what the heck, the bed is 14 years old, I will try anything. I knew they had mold issues with the older beds after national and local news stories. I am in St Paul, near the headquarters in Plymouth, MN. I checked my mattress and pad often and never saw a thing brewing. I had checked the foam topper a month and a half ago when painting my bedroom and all was good, no black mold at all. So last week when I went to cap the leaker, I pulled it apart and lo and behold the dreaded black mold.
I had read the complaints and figured I would get nowhere with customer service. I was prepared for a battle but in the end it was slick as it could be. The foam pad and air mats came about a week later at no charge and included pre-paid postage to return the air mats. I just wanted to send my positive experience out there. It sounds like they have enough consumer complaints out there. Again, I was surprised by the ease of return and prompt replacement due to the mold. I would still take out a mortgage on this bed. I am a staff nurse and work long hours with a bad back and again, this bed truly saved my life. Just glad the bed was bought in my name, not the ex's as it would have been useless if it was in their name. Best of luck to you all out there. I agree this bed is not for everyone but for me, I am blessed.

We purchased our Sleep Number bed and mattress base in 1997 and have used them without a problem for 15 years. Our bed does not deflate, leak, sag, or show any indication of wear. The mattress base works perfectly in a standard $20 mattress frame. I have severe back issues (spinal surgery in 1991) and haven't found a better bed for my situation despite spending many nights on "premium" mattresses while vacationing or visiting friends.
I can't speak of the quality of the current products or the usefulness of customer service, but I am planning on purchasing a mattress for my child's room and intend to make it a Sleep Number bed, avoiding all of the upsells that appear to be pushed by the salespeople. They add nothing to your sleep experience.
For anyone looking, 1) buy the least expensive model that meets your needs. Extra layers of memory foam and padding do not make an air bed better. Massage functions will never meet your expectations as well. 2) Double check all of the connections. Any leaks we have had were because a hose wasn't plugged in properly. 3) Buy a standard mattress frame. They are inexpensive and work just fine (at least on the 1997 model!) And 4) Read the fine print! The warranty is 2 years plus another 18 years of diminishing coverage--This is not a true 20-year warranty. Also, finance agreements are designed to push up your price even when they say "free financing." Avoid them and a lot of headaches!

The Sleep Number bed is the worst piece of garbage I ever purchased and I would gladly recommend it to my worst enemies and Hitler. We purchased two twin mattresses about three years ago--one failed one and a half years ago. So as we were on warranty, we were told how to check what was wrong by phone--not a simple process.
Well, as it turned out, one of the bladders was leaking. We had to purchase another set from them and go through the expense of sending the faulty set to them. Of course, we had to set up the bed by ourselves. Within a year after that, the second mattress failed completely. Then, the repaired mattress started to list heavily to one side.
I called to tell them that I wished to have the mattresses picked up and returned. They had the nerve to tell me that the bed was out of warranty after three years! This, in my opinion, is the worst business it has ever been my displeasure to deal with. My advise is do not even consider buying one of these pieces of junk. I dumped the beds gladly to a land fill and will remain ever grateful to this site for permitting me to exact a degree of payback by revealing the truth about this awful firm and its awful mattress.

My husband and I bought a Sleep Number bed to try and improve our back pain in 2007. The first year, everything was fine and then I had to start calling customer service because the mattress was always uneven from one side to another. Customer service’s response was that I had to pay 149.00 dollars for a staff member to come to our house to check what the problem was. My answer was whether the mattress was 20 years of warranty, I did not have to pay anything and that the contract does not say anything about extra fees for changes or repairs.
Then in the following years until today, the mattress loses air all the time, the control to raise or lower the mattress does not work and we cannot see the numbers. The famous customer service response is that we have to pay for a new control and if we want to change the air chambers, we have to pay $349.00 plus shipping. My husband and I have put a dispute in the Court of Queens, New York because we thought that Sleep Number is deceiving people with a defective product and will not help anyone. If someone who is going through the same, should do the same. Put your dispute in court to stop this abuse.

Horrible company with terrible customer service! I have had a Select Comfort mattress for quite a few years. Upon ordering it, I was told that if I paid it off in 6 months, there would be no interest charges. I ended up being charged a lot of interest and was told they never said that, even though I had a witness! It was a real scam.
Now I tried to buy a new fabric cover as mine is worn and discolored. I was in shock when they told me the fabric cover would be $702.83! What the heck! Are they insane? When I questioned it, I was told it was "the most intricate part of the bed". You've got to be kidding me! I sew and stated that it wasn't "intricate" at all. Then they said that the little "pillow top" part is very intricate and expensive to do! Hello! I told them I buy the pillow top mattress pads for my regular mattresses all the time and they're about $100.00, again with the word "intricate". I told them to forget it and that it was Tempur-Pedic time. Select Comfort is a rip off! Big time!

We purchased a recreational vehicle in February 2007 that came with a Sleep Number mattress. It has never worked. It has never held pressure. We have had it in for service on numerous occasions, and the best solution the RV service department came up with was to cap the leaking bed. Finally, a new pump was ordered, but the pump was incompatible with our mattress and a new remote was needed. We had to purchase the new remote. When the new pump was installed, the bed deflated faster than ever. We have talked to customer service and even said we would accept a pro-rata refund on the bed so we could get a real mattress. Sleep Number would not do this. So much for customer satisfaction.

Do not buy a Sleep Number bed. Poor product and poor aftersales support. I have had one 5 years, it never stays up. The salesperson lied to me and told me they would send out someone anytime it goes wrong, not true. The salesperson was very unpleasant. Also, we were told that the parts were covered by 100% warranty. Not true either, it is only 60% and probably this reduces as time passes. I had one set of experts come and replace the fittings and mattress once. It did still leak and now I am being asked to try to find the problem. They said if it still leaked, it was because the neighbor has one and his remote was affecting my bed.
Now the support staff are saying that could never be true. Three lies so far and counting. It still leaked and all they are saying I now have to try to troubleshoot and they will only then send out the parts as we eliminate what might be wrong. If I know that I would have to mess with parts and troubleshooting, I would never have bought the bed. In summary, the bed has never held air all night. Staff are not very truthful when it comes to selling the product and if the experts cannot fix it, they blame the neighbor's remote control.

I went to a Sleep Number store and was told that if something breaks on one of their beds, they have to order a new pump just as I need to do. This is theft. I will purchase another type of bed before I will pay $214 for a plastic connector, especially when I see that many other people are being charged between $150 and $200 for unneeded pumps.

Marital Sleep Solution: This Sleep Number 5000 Mattress did save us from a bed that was entirely too firm. We don't agree on the exact firmness of the mattress so that solved a marital disagreement for us but only symbolically. We cannot complain because we can make adjustments if we please.
Sleep Number Hijacking:The remote control responds properly and does a good job of resetting itself. Unfortunately, someone moved into our neighborhood with a similar bed or a remote with the same frequency. They can control our bed! Imagine your Sleep Number changing from 30 to 90 at about 4:00 in the morning. That is sleep hijacking as far as I am concerned. We put up with it for a while.
Customer Support Unresponsive to Valid Problem: When we finally called the Select Comfort, we expected the Sleep Number hijacking problem to be solved simply and quickly. Instead, we heard that we should just unplug it and it should reset itself. We told the customer support representative that we had done this many times and it does not work. She said that she had never heard of our problem before. We got no further help beyond that. I think not being able to control my sleep number is a valid problem that should not be dismissed by the company.
Sleep Number 5000 Expensive: These beds are not a good value. I don't experience proper back support for my money. There are essentially 2 narrow air channels surrounded by sponge materials inside the mattress. The bed sheets on the extended queen mattress are impossible to find. The ones we were forced to purchase from Select Comfort were pricey.
Useful Materials: I like how you can unzip the top of the mattress to clean it if you have to. The fabric and the materials are of decent quality. I am pleased with that aspect of the mattress.

A few months later, I called the company and was told that it was "displaced filling" in the mattress pad. I was also told to have it dry cleaned (machine-washable was stressed at time of purchase). There is not a night that I sleep all night, and awaken in pain, even on meds. My husband's side now has a trough in it also. Hi Crystal, thank you for sharing your concern with us. We think it is really important to know that while situations like this are rare, common household mold can occur in any mattress or piece of upholstered furniture under certain conditions. Mold spores are present in ALL outdoor and indoor environments. Our testing revealed common household mold levels were in each case lower than mold levels typically found in normal outdoor air and were generally lower than or comparable to mold levels found within buildings with good air filtration systems. We have been advised by independent experts that for consumers with mold allergies to be affected, the mold spores must be airborne or otherwise come in direct contact with the consumer, and this does not appear to be caused by our product.

Credit card in hand, I came very close to purchasing a $2099+ closeout bed from the Select Comfort website and found the manner in which this company advertises and represents its products is at best misleading. The bed in question was represented as a "closeout" and on the info page it indicated the 30-day in-home trial.
When you go to "Learn more", this 30-day trial does not cover "limited editions". The bed is listed as iLE. Just before placing the order, I asked about this to ensure the 30-day period was in play and was told that this bed was in fact a limited edition bed (iLE) and not eligible for the 30-day period. When I asked the sales rep where on the website this is indicated she was unable to find it. I was then bounced to customer service and asked/explained the situation. After some looking, the customer service rep also could not show me where this was and that the policy was to allow only for an exchange.
Not wanting to pay $2099+ without a 30-day trial, and when they, in fact, could not show me where this bed was indicated as a "limited edition", I asked them to honor their advertisement and allow me to purchase the bed with the 30-day period. He put me on hold, checked with his boss who found one place on the site that links this to a limited edition bed and basically said "Sorry".
I feel that since the sales staff and customer service rep could not find this, that the consumer is left with, at best, misleading information. Only after going to a third person could they locate the information. If they couldn't find it, neither will the consumer. Clever. The fact that I was ready to buy the bed seemed to make no difference to this company. I have to wonder what other clever way they are misleading the consumer.

I am on my fourth pump and 2nd bladder on the side that deflates to zero every single night. I have done everything asked of me to figure out what the problem is with this bed.
Bottom line, I am fed up with ending up sleeping on a slope and waking up with back pain. Heck, I purchased this overpriced bed in hopes that it would decrease or minimize my pain and inability to get a good night sleep. They even said on this last pump that they would put the pump through quality assurance to guarantee that it works. Really? Why not do that with the product in the first place?
Anyway, this bed still does not hold air and when capped off is fine. Needless to say, I have had to resort to sleeping on my couch which is now breaking down. Couches are for sitting not sleeping on every night. I just want my money back so I can go back to a normal mattress. Is there anyone out there that can assist? I feel ripped off!

I have two of these beds. I was happy for about a year with the first one. Then it began to deflate. First in a week’s time and then overnight. The company response was useless. So each night before bed I need to fill the mattress before going to sleep. And in the morning, the bed has lost about 15 numbers from deflation. And it goes. I have sent $4500 on these two mattresses and feel like I was ripped off. No solution other than to move on. But if a class action starts up I want to be the first signature.

After owning this bed for less than a year it rapidly lost air on one side. After using the owner’s manual and talking to a customer service rep, I did everything to troubleshoot but to no avail. I had hoped they would send a tech to rectify the matter but was told that they don't do that and expect the user to fix the problem. They can send a set-up tech for $180 plus and then they don't carry parts. They send any required parts to you and expect you to fix your own bed. Trust me, the bed isn't that great to justify this shabby customer service and lack of support. I will tell anyone who will listen: do not purchase a Sleep Number bed. It’s overrated to the ninth degree!

I like a firm bed and my husband likes a soft cocoon type bed. After searching for over two years, we decided on a sleep number bed. We have owned our queen sized double chamber sleep number bed for five years. We have a small to medium sized dog, and grandchildren, who love to lay on it and watch TV. We get a lot of power surges in our neighborhood, and it is recommended that the pump be plugged into a power strip. I began to notice my side deflating a little. I went to pump it up, and my control was blank, and my husband's lit up, but would not work either. I just called customer service, and they are sending not only a new pump, but new upgraded controls and new tubing.
They charged my credit card only $117 for parts under the warranty (100% is only for 2 years, and we have had our bed for 5 years, so it is a discounted warranty of 36%), tax and shipping. The lady I dealt with was extremely helpful, and is a pleasure to talk to. She emailed me directions and a receipt. I actually had them, before I got off the phone with her. We will receive our new parts in 5 to 7 business days, and I have the UPS tracking number, so I can track it. I love it, and it is the best investment!
When we took it apart to troubleshoot we found no mold, signs of wear, or any of the other things. I have read about one here. I do, as it recommends in the owner's manual, and leave the covers back, while I shower and get ready in the mornings, before I make it up for the day. I have always done this to air out my beds, first thing in the morning. I love my bed!

Does the adjustable frame have to be completely put together? I was sad for her. Why couldn't it be partially collapsed? The techs said they run into this problem sometimes in older homes.
I hope you have a solution. I own a Sleep Number, and I love it. My mother lives with me, and she has difficulties. I want her to be as comfortable as possible. She is 87. I hope you have a solution besides ordering a dual king. Thank you for listening.

Inside of a year, the mattress cover zipper broke and the foam pad underneath became ripped. The bed worked great for the first couple of months and then went downhill. A call to the company provided no relief whatsoever. We spent almost $3,400.00 dollars and we had to use duct tape to keep the bed together as the bolsters in the bed would not support the air mattresses. We were so disappointed we purchased a new mattress and had to pay someone to come and haul away the pieces.

I wrote early with the same complaints as the others. Since this was my boyfriend’s, I was only looking to resolve the comfort problem and fortunately this site popped up. I arrived home this evening to ask him to please pull the bed apart. He did not know why, I was hoping to not find the mold. Unfortunately, the bed was covered in black mold. That explains my recent respiratory issues that started about 6 months ago.
After spending a few months sleeping in his bed, I will never forget the first night going to his house to sleepover. Grant you, I have never in my life had an allergy but I could not stop sneezing and coughing, I thought I must be allergic to something in here. That's weird since I have never had an allergy. I also felt bad as I said to him, “your room smells like mold.” He said he did not smell it. I had to sleep with the window open because I felt as if I were suffocating. He thought I was over reacting as I thought he was just used to the mold smell in his room. After today, I’m relieved to have read this and discovered it now before we were highlighted on the next episode of 1,000 ways to die.

I recently moved in with my boyfriend whom unfortunately owns a Sleep Number bed. I am a very fit woman who sleeps great and has no aches, pains, chronic illness or injury. I have been complaining to him every night, waking all through the night with numbness from the top of scalp all the way down to my toes. I had such a massive back pain that I was practically temporarily disabled. He thinks it's me as his side does not have the problem mine does. We always cuddled so close in my bed. I woke up happy and well rested. Now, I wake up angry and riddled with pain. He can't cuddle me because I will fall into what I call the crack of hell. I smell the mold I feel sick and I feel like I have respiratory problems.
I'm a respiratory therapy student and have noticed a change in my pulmonary function since consistently sleeping in this bed. "Sleep ha, ha, what a joke!" I looked forward to he and I have a happy life together and everything is great with the exception of this bed which is enter fearing with my entire life. I feel angry, I'm in chronic pain, I get no sleep and I feel sick. All of these symptoms are upon waking and last a few hours. I'm wondering how long it will be before I end up permanently miserable. I have asked him several times to please buy a new bed however it is hard for him to believe I have all of these problems since he does not have them on his side and he swears he bought America's number one bed. I can't wait for him to read all the people who have the same complaints as me. If we could afford to, I would buy a new bed. But since I can't and he has no room for me to bring my bed, I may have to move out or sleep elsewhere a couple of nights a week just to get a good healthy night’s sleep.
I hope this company gets sued and all of the people who have been affected and life interrupted by the purchase of this Demon bed are compensated. I don't believe in class action law suits or civil for that matter, but after reading so many of the dissatisfied consumers blogs. This company should pay or at least be put out of business. Someone please investigate.

Warning -- Stay far away from Sleep Comfort!
We were involved in the tornado in Joplin. One of our first replacement items were a select comfort bed. Started to have issues right off. Called the company and someone in the company told us that we did not purchase the bed and it was not on their records. We had to make numerous purchases with replacing our damaged items and checked with the credit card company.
The credit card company told us that Select Comfort did not bill us properly, they only billed us for the base of the bed which was about $3500.00. So I called back Select Comfort to give back the entire bed. Select comfort told me that they only wanted the mattress and let me keep the base. The base was no longer good to me, and I needed to replace the entire bed. I think it was Julie from Select Comfort who left a nasty message on my phone and Select Comfort will resolve this issue.

We have had a king size dual chamber Select Comfort bed since 2002 with no issues at all, and only wonderful things to say about comfort. In fact, many times we made comments about how it was one of the best investments we ever made for our home.We have been very happy with the bed itself. I have arthritis in my spine and hips, and it is absolutely a blessing to be able to change the firmness or softness of my side of the bed, depending on my pain levels which are also greatly affected by the weather and other circumstances. My husband prefers a firm bed on most nights.
When we purchased the bed, we did not even opt for the number control, and did not rely on any specific number. I just adjusted by how good it felt, and really have been very happy.Recently (after 10 years of use), my side started to lose air. We pulled the bed away from the wall to check for leaks in the valves, and using soapy water looking for bubbles around the hoses, we found no problems. So we unzipped the cover and opened the bed to check to see if there was any poked holes in the chamber from something we may have caused.
By the way, there was no mold or other dirt or dust in the chambers, only some light breaking down of the charcoal colored foam side wall inserts where I always sit on the edge of the bed. The zipper worked fine. No problems. While the bed was open, my husband sat down quite abruptly on one of the chambers, and the fabric actually popped and then tore. We were a bit surprised... "Oh- oh" what did we do? So he ripped a bigger hole in it and looked inside to see some places where the fabric lining outside or inside coating was thinning. We took the now-flat air chamber out, he put his full air chamber on my side of the bed, and we brought the twin sized spring mattress from our guest room on his side to use temporarily.
Again, this is after 10 years of no problems. You wouldn't expect to buy a car and have all of the parts last for 10 years. Even my dishwasher had parts that broke after 8 years. Wear and use are normal, especially for something you use 8 hours a day 365 days a year. Plus, we usually watched movies in the bedroom, played with our pets, played video games, our bedroom is more of a living room for us than our living room is. That bed gets a lot of people-time on it, plus our pets sleep on the bed also. But of course we had to call customer service and order a new chamber. After 10 years, I didn't know if we still had a warranty or not.
We were greeted on the phone with a very friendly sales rep, "Elizabeth". I was surprised to know I was still under warranty, and they still had my information, address, etc. on file. She was very helpful, applied my warranty discount to my new chamber, upgraded my shipping to two-day delivery, and then held the order until I could do a bank money exchange to pay for it. My chamber, shipping and all came to about $100.25. Excellent! I thought I would have to pay a small fortune to replace the chamber. I had no idea what they would cost when I called them, I only knew I loved the bed, and do not want to go back to a regular spring mattress.
It's only been couple of days but I am waiting for delivery. It will likely show up tomorrow. We also ordered the two side wall foam inserts just to refresh the stability of the edges of the bed. That was under $20.00 plus $8.00 shipping. I have no doubt that this replacement chamber will be wonderful for the next 10 years or more.I told Elizabeth I read these consumer complaints, and that I would come on and tell my happy story. Most people don't want to hear the happy stories, but mine is the truth, and I am very happy we have a Select Comfort bed. I have recommended them to family and friends, and quite frankly, I'm spoiled. I really miss it when we are traveling and have to sleep in a hotel bed. I think they should put them in hotel rooms everywhere, and let people try them out. They would probably double their sales. I love it.

I give it one star because my husband likes his firm side. I have had it 5 years but didn't realize I hated it because I was pregnant when we bought it, so was miserable sleeping anyways. If you like and need a soft mattress, you will not get it with the sleep number. Rather, firm and saggy are your choices. My husband likes it because he likes firm. I'm sad that the bar in the middle had halted our cuddling life. You will need to sleep strictly on your own side of the bed with a sleep number. I actually worked for Select Comfort for 4 and a half years. I had a bed that was losing air. Read the warranty! It is an air mattress plain and simple. If you have a problem, you open the bed up and work on it yourself. Seriously, the warranty is not like a car--you fix it yourself! And the warranty only covers the bed for 2 years. Don't let them lie to you and say it is a 20-year warranty; it is 2-year warranty. On year 3, if the little pump fails you are out about $200. And they make you open the bed and cap the chambers for 2 days to make sure it is the pump. Then if it is the pump you replace it yourself.
They don't have people that can come out and look at the bed. What kind of ridiculous warranty is that? Read it before buying. And a 30-day trial is ridiculous; it takes 30 plus days to get used to a new sleep surface. This is all coming from a former Select Comfort store manager. Going over the ridiculous 30-day trial you will be stuck with this air bed. Warranty is good for basically 2 years, and you will fix the bed yourself.

Both air mattress chambers failed in exactly the same manner: crack in the plastic connector underneath the black O-ring. In addition, the inflation numbers on the individual controls have long since faded out so that they are unreadable. The bed itself is only mediocre with regard to sleep comfort. Certainly not worth spending premium prices for the bed. Given the nature of the mattress failure, I don't think that one should have to pay for mattress chamber replacement since I consider it a product defect. The service rep knew exactly what I was talking about, leading me to think that this is a common failure cause--something that could easily be prevented by using better quality connectors. Given the cost of the bed, one would logically assume that it is made up of high quality parts. That would be a foolish assumption. I do not recommend this bed. Save your money. Let me know when a class action lawsuit is filed.

Within 5 days of our bed arriving, my better half had two bites on her collar bone. Two days later I had two bites: one on my stomach and the other rear deltoid.
We didn’t want to believe that our new bed arrived infested, but after additional bites this confirmed our fears and disgust. I called Sleep Number customer service and spoke to Nick. He spoke to two different supervisors and both times returning to the phone with Sleep Numbers advice: call Orkin because were not responsible. I then spoke to James who is the customer service case manager and he told me the same thing: not Sleep Number’s issue; not responsible; call Orkin. I asked James, if I get Orkin in to spray our once clean home, will Sleep Number pay for it? James said no.
Unbelievable! I’m losing my mind. I got Sleep Number’s president and CEO Bill McLaughlin’s direct number and left three messages. Three days later, Keith called back and told me Bill McLaughlin was doing other things and doesn’t deal with the customers directly. Why not? I went through the whole thing again with Keith and the response was the same: your bed, your problem. I stated at the very least Sleep Number should pay for getting rid of the bugs: “Nope, sorry, not our problem. We watch for bugs. They can’t be from us. It’s your problem, though.” So I spoke to the first line of customer service defense to the top office of the President and CEO and what I found was a really low integrity company with crappy customer service, not to mention a bug infested product. Worst company. Don’t buy from them.

The remote showed a setting of 100 while in the middle of the bed, I could feel the base through the air chamber. We bought the bed because I had been experiencing some major back issues and a newer mattress we had was just too firm.
I tried a "tempurpedic" type of solution but, after a couple of years, it didn't seem to "bounce" back. We had experienced a Sleep Number at a hotel and thought it was very nice and my sister-in-law has one she likes. We decided to spend the money and now, my back has been in dire straits for months and requires medical attention. It appears I am experiencing many of the same problems so many other consumers are having with the Sleep Number product. I am dreading what I will be up against when I have to contact the company. To Molly of Portland, OR! The mold issue that you speak of is a thing of the past. The people who are complaining of mold have older beds. Yes, they used to have an issue with mold but they have fixed that issue and now, everything is treated with anti-microbacterial stuff.
There should be a huge thing on mold on that site and explaining about the mold, which is a common household mold that you even get in your innerspring mattress. I have opened up my innerspring mattress before and guess what? There was mold in it and a lot of it. I just wanted you to see the facts on the bed before you just base your decision solely of what people say.
There have been no known cases of mold since 2005 when they started treating the chambers and people who owned a bed before the date they fixed the issue. Yeah, well they get free replacement parts: Chambers, foam, covers. Anything that touched the mold or has mold on it will be replaced at no charge to the customer plus the warranty on the bed is amazing, better than the warranties of other beds. It's 2 years full coverage and then it prorates after that.

If you open the remote case, you can see the cheep electronics and they are plugged into the cable with a simple jack, if you can put batteries in your TV controller, you can fix the remote.
So why do I have to pay for a pump when I should get the control heads for free. I'm an electronic tech for any years, I can tell sleep number took the cheep way out on these controls, cost on the high side $ 5.00 per unit. What I paid for this bed all should be covered under the 20 year warranty. The pump doesn't run all the time. So it alone should outlast the warranty. Poor quality control and Engineering support. P.S. I guess now that mentioned, I opened the remote, my warranty is void.

My husband and I recently stopped in at a Sleep Number store in our local mega mall out of curiosity from the ubiquitous TV commercials. We happened to get the regional manager as our sales representative, so we got the Full Monty (he actually used that phrase once)! We were interested in two mattresses, a twin and full, as we sleep separately (our secret to 35 years together). We are on a fixed income and no credit to speak of, so we’re thrilled to learn about their no-risk layaway program. We left with all our brochures, a printed quote, and would take the time to make our decision in the New Year.
When I mentioned our experience to our daughter-in-law, she told me about the mold problem, so I decided to go online to see if it was just a rumor. I guess not! Since most of the complaints were 3+ years old, I kept looking. Then I found this site and I'm glad I did! I know that people who are satisfied are much less likely to post than dissatisfied people, but the number of unhappy people here are beyond what I would expect, and the dates of the posts are very recent.
I can tell most of these folks are not the usual complainers, those who are seldom happy with anything they buy, or who don't want to accept their responsibilities as informed consumers. If so many people have problems with the top-of-the-line mattresses, it follows we'd be asking for trouble only being able to afford the bottom of the line! We'll save up for six months what we would have spent for the layaway program and take our cash to a reputable local mattress company. I've been on a Sealy Posturepedic for 5 years, past its 10 year warranty, and I still have comfortable nights snuggled in my "trench"!
Thanks to all who took the time to post. We won't be purchasing beds with so many "moving parts"! You've saved us a lot of grief! One thing nobody mentioned: what if the power goes out for an extended period? How would we adjust our bed(s) then?

After neck surgery in 2001, to help with my pain, we bought a select comfort bed and loved it. In 2004 (maybe 2005), my husband and I were both having sleeping problems. He has RLS and also sleeps with a CPAP. So we bought a second bed for him. When I bought my daughter the select comfort bed last year, my husband is having a lot of back trouble so we got the adjustable part for his bed and they came and installed it. When they installed it, I was in the room and the tech told me they would have to send me new parts for the bed and he showed me all of the mold (this was the bed from 2005.) I was in shock and we checked my bed which is 10 years old and the mold terrified me.
I am a real estate agent and appraiser or at least I was until 2 years ago when various strange illnesses disabled me. I am well aware of mold and what it can do. Years ago, I was diagnosed with an auto-immune disease and put me on chemo-therapy. I have been on one drug after another because no person has been able to treat my headaches, fainting, fatigue and one health problem after another. I live in a very small town and I am sure I will have to travel rather far to find someone to test me and so if there is a treatment they can do something. In the meantime, I will hire a professional mold inspector. I will find a doctor that can at least test me and I will find a lawyer that will help me.

For further information related to mold, we invite you to visit www.sleepnumberfacts.com where you will find the latest information concerning steps Select Comfort has taken to ensure its products remain mold-free. You will also find general information concerning the health impacts of household mold. Full customer satisfaction is a top priority for Select Comfort. I am writing to say that I am actually thrilled with my sleep number bed. I've had it for 4 or 5 years now. Before this bed, I changed my mattress to a Temperpedic due to back pain. I was still in severe pain and returned the Temperpedic for the Sleep Number thinking that I needed a firmer mattress. It turns out that the only thing that relieved my back pain was an extremely soft mattress. I would not have been able to know that with any other bed. I sometimes choose to firm it up, when my back is feeling good. I did have one issue with one of the sides wherein sometimes loosing pressure. They send me new air chambers for about $90. I have them in the box still as I've been too lazy to install them.
The original one does lose some air slowly on the left side but so far, I just keep adjusting the pressure every few months and it hasn't been bothering me too much. I'm just keeping the extra chamber in case the problem gets worse. I personally think that this is the only bed that anyone with back pain should be considering. It can adjust to anything that you need it to be. If your back pain doesn't go away with this bed after you try many settings then it's not going to go away with any bed.

I have a queen, dual chamber bed that I bought in December 2006. Both my husband and I rolled to the middle because of different Sleep Numbers (I guess). This bed is terrible. There is no Sleep Number that is right for me. I've spent $200 on memory foam and pillow top mattress pads so that I can stand to sleep on this mattress. Buyers, beware!

I purchased the sleep number queen size bed in good faith over the phone under there free 30-night in-home trial. The sales associate never, never tells me that I would have to pay for shipping it back to Select Comfort if I am dissatisfied with their product. The total UPS shipping charge was $211.12 for shipping it back. Money thrown out the window. After two nights, I’m waking up with excruciating back pain! I called there customer service associate. He tells me I have to keep it for 30 days! Before an RMA number could be issued, the bed was taken apart and carefully repacked in the original boxes after the second day. I have written the president and CEO of Select Comfort a letter on 11/21/2011asking for a refund on my $211.12. No reply from him.
I received a call 12/16/2011 from his associate. I explained to her that I had written the president and CEO the letter and she says she’s calling on his behalf and sorry, there’s no refund from Select Comfort. I think this company needs to be stopped for their unethical business practices. On my sales receipt UPS shipping to me was $79.99 and they were running a special no UPS charge! I called UPS customer service. I ask why Select Comfort could ship it for $79.99. His reply was they get wholesale price! Retail price is $130.03. I asked why I paid $211.12. That is huge difference in money for 4 boxes! It appears to me that I have paid freight both ways! Now, I'm their latest victim!
Buyer, beware of Select Comfort. I have been reading all the horror stories. This company needs to be stopped for there unethical business practices. I wish that I had checked this site before purchasing Select Comfort's horrible and stressful product. I hope that I can help someone endure a horrible experience from Select Comfort. I was out $211.12 for two nights for their free 30-night in-home trial. So please, please don’t be their next victim!

I have had 2 back surgeries and we have a Queen Select Comfort. I will wake up at all different times in the night with really bad back pain. I check the remote only to find that the bed is at 100. Well, I made sure it was set at 75. So I reset the bed and 5 minutes later, it’s back to 100 and then, there are nights I get into bed only to find it at 45 or lower. This bed is 4 years old and is on its 2nd pump, bladder and remote which they replaced with a single remote so if the bed gains or loses air in the night one of us either has to wake the other one to ask for the remote or get out of bed to get the remote. We had no choice when getting this mattress. It was the only one Tiffin puts in their motor homes and we live in ours. I will be replacing the Select Comfort with true latex mattress.

I read these complaints and cancelled my layaway. I went back to the store to return the additional "sleep number" pillow I had purchased as customer service told me to do. Jason at the Novi store would not give me a refund. I told him that I cancelled my bed purchase as there were 1,000 complaints on this website. He advised me that these complaints were all fake. Oh really, Jason? Really? **!
Again, Jason (the manager at 12 Oaks Sleep Number) would not refund my purchase. And when I laughed in his face that I was going to be complaint number 1,001, he could not care less. Oh well. Who cares? Good bye and good riddance and shame on this company for ripping off all these old people and/or other folks who financed their beds and got trash. Good riddance Sleep Number.

I have a Select Comfort Bed and Sofa Bed. After 7 - 8 years, I have had to replace the pumps on both and the air chamber on the sofa bed. I was surprised to find out that the warranty on the replacement air chamber is only 30 days for full replacement and then reverts to the original, very limited warranty. It does not start over as you would expect a new part should.
I would not recommend either of these products and will junk them the next time I have a problem. I am very dissatisfied and I would join a class action suit if available.

The Sleep Number bed is a "rip off". It did nothing as advertised. After sleeping on it for almost 30 days, my back hurt worse. I bought a king-size mattress which sunk down in the middle after about one week. It kept losing air. No technicians are available to come to your home. I gave them a prescription from my doctor, which meant I was not to pay any sales tax on the bed. They charged me anyway and said they could not find the prescription even though the salesperson said he had received it.
I had to call several times to get them to pick up the bed. The papers were not sent from the customer service to the company that does the pick up. I was finally told and then someone expected me to call the "pick up" company. I should not have had to let them know that I do no work for the company so I could not call the "pick up" company. They make it seem that it is so easy to return the bed. But they charge a whopping fee to pick up. This was the worst purchase I have ever made. It is still in the experimental stage as far as I am concerned.
I am still in dispute with the company about the sales tax that I was charged incorrectly. In addition, they charge an inordinate fee to pick up the bed. No other company I have done business with has charged as much.
