How does Varo work?

Varo is a simple banking system to sign up for and use. To start, you can download the app, click on “Sign Up” and follow the instructions. You can also use the Varo website. You need a form of personal ID and your Social Security number. There is no credit check when you sign up for a bank account.

After approval, you should receive your Visa debit card in six to nine business days. You can deposit money into your account via direct deposit; transfer from an external bank account or digital wallet; mobile deposit of a paper check; cash deposit at checkout with various retailers; or using a Green Dot MoneyPak.

To withdraw cash with no fee, you can visit Allpoint ATMs, which are located in places such as CVS, Walgreens and Target.

Varo products

Varo’s products start with its checking account, which you get when you first sign up, but it has several other offerings:

  • Bank account: The Varo checking account has no minimum balance, no monthly fees and no foreign transaction fees. The debit card is contactless, and you won’t be held liable for unauthorized charges. You can send money to other Varo customers instantly and free. You also have access to direct deposits up to two days early.
  • Savings account: The Varo savings account has a starting APY of 0.5%, but you can qualify for a 3% APY if you get direct deposits of at least $1,000 per month, don’t have a negative balance in your checking or savings accounts during the month and keep your savings balance at $5,000 or less for the entire month. The optional Save Your Pay tool lets you transfer a percentage of your direct deposits to your savings account. There's also Save Your Change, which rounds up your transactions to the nearest dollar and adds the difference to your savings.
  • Varo Believe: This secured credit card helps you build your credit. It has no annual fee, no APR and no minimum security deposit. Add money to your account and make purchases, then pay your balance when it’s due. You can see your credit score in the Varo app. To qualify, you need $1,000 or more in qualifying direct deposits and an active Varo bank account without a negative balance and with no overdue advance. Varo reports payment history to the three major credit bureaus.
  • Varo Advance: Get a cash advance of as much as $100 with no interest. There is a small fee with advances of $50, $75 and $100. You have 30 days to pay back the advance in as many payments as necessary. There are several qualifications, such as having a bank account that's at least 30 days old.

Varo fees

One of Varo’s biggest selling points is the lack of fees. There are no monthly maintenance fees or overdraft fees. There are some fees to be aware of, though.

Varo’s advanced system has way too many flaws. I had worked myself up to a $500 credit limit by paying 16 payments on time, always keeping a positive balance. Depositing six times what I normally deposit. Paying reoccurring bills with my Varo secured card. They lowered my limit from 500 all the way down to 100 once they got another on-time payment with no change credit score either… You can get a line of credit at a bank for $500 to protect your account. That’s not gonna go up and down. Varo by doing it so drastic screws their customers when they’re counting on that money to pay bills and they have a plan to pay it down by $100 each month!

I would advise you to open up an account elsewhere as what they advertise is a big complete lie when it comes to their advances! I am a customer that is fighting cancer and winning, but it’s stuff like this that stresses me out. I am seriously thinking about jumping ship this time as they have no reason to lower my powering power... Customer,s beware this online bank is a scam. You will get a lot more consistency by opening a local bank account with overdraft protection.

If I could give zero stars, I DEFINITELY WOULD!!!! I've been banking with Varo for years. I've always had more than one bank, so I've never really paid close attention to their dis service to their customers. This TERRIBLE bank NEVER wants to honor disputes. Unfortunately, I've used this card for some important purchases, and when I've been done wrong, or paid for a service that wasn't provided, I'd honor protocol filing a dispute, and varo's punk ** doesn't ever have my back. Most banks does their due diligence, and a fair investigation to find out what happened. Not them!! They don't even try! I've been done wrong when it comes to a few purchases and disputed them, and they do nothing! THEY SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO DO BUSINESS!! They don't give a DAMN about their customers.

There are sooo many mobile banks out here that care, and truly lives out their mission statement. I STRONGLY SUGGEST that people bank elsewhere. I've recently had some issues with my varo account, and varo takes NO ACCOUNTABILITY!!! My experience with them is not a good one! Please believe me when I tell you DO NOT BANK WITH THIS BANK! Notice how they aren't really supported positively. That's for good reason. I wish I had NEVER done business with these stupid people. They don't have anyone's best interest at heart. They don't because they don't have a heart. Their day is coming to a close. I've taken my own person poll with other varo customers, and I've gotten a LOT of support. If I get so many people to rate them, we can get them shut down, EVERYWHERE!

We, customers, and people with feelings, and family who depend on our financial institutions to be there for us, and be trustful deserve to have just that. Varo DOES NOT offer a peace of mind! I HATE THIS BANK, and If you knew me, you'd know that I never use that word "hate." It's very necessary. I want to help people make a good financial decision when it comes to your hard earned money. Straight up SKIP this bank! I don't like it when anyone, being business, and/or personal entities take advantage of good people! THIS IS NOT A BANK WHO CARES ABOUT PEOPLE. THEY JUST WANT YOUR PATRONAGE! THEY DO NOT DESERVE ANY CUSTOMERS!!!

This is the worst bank I've ever used. If it was the last bank around I wouldn't recommend it. They put a suspension on my account for supposed identify reason. It's been almost 2 weeks since I've been able to access my money. Never use them. I would rate it a 0 if possible.

I love Varo. They do so much for me. However, I just recently had an issue with a company taking my money. All I wanted was the contact information so that I could cancel the charge. I called because that’s the only option they give you for that kind of thing. The representative, instead, filed a dispute as if I was unhappy with the service. Of course, it was denied. So, I was still at square one and went through all of that for no reason. What did I do to solve the issue, since they couldn’t give me that simple info, I broke my card and had them send me a new one. Good lord!

You could have offered some customer service so that I could resolve my issue. I didn’t want the money back. It was my fault. Going above and beyond for a customer goes a long way with me. You couldn’t go above and beyond by looking up something simple, therefore, my loyalty ended. If a bank ever offers around the same or better benefits and services; I will be switching financial institutions. That was poor customer service in my opinion. I don’t forgive that easily.

Online bank that is fee free as long as you use ATMs in the Allpoint network. Live customer service is only available M-F during business hours but is very customer friendly when it comes to suspicious activity or unauthorized charges. They also offer cash advances and credit lines to qualified customers. They also offer a secured credit card, making it easier to rent a car.

I have had an account with borrowed bank for a number of years now. The last week on Thursday they sent me an email saying that my account had been frozen. They get back to me within 24 hours because of some fraudulent charges found out that somebody's trying to buy cryptocurrency on my account. As many data breaches as there have been lately I'm not shocked. Well 24 hours went by they never contacted me. I'm on Social Security Disability. I'm a senior and I had $170 in my account in my one account with them and my believe card I think I had a few dollars on it. I have tried to get a hold of them and they don't answer the phone and then they said, "You got to talk to him through the app. I tried to get into the app. They don't recognize my email any longer and so where the hell is my money.

I'm going to get ahold of Social Security and report them because that is theft from a federal account and they still won't answer my phone. I am broke. I have no money except what's in that account and they won't take care of it. I went to this account because they said they'd pay you 5 days early and I kept getting late fees on my rent because I get paid the second Wednesday of the month and this was like a godsend and now it's a freaking nightmare.

The so called "5 star reviews" of this bank are clearly planted. How could a bank that has literally no customer service (which I didn't know was possible) possibly get a legitimate 5 star rating? This is without question the worst bank operating in the USA and that is saying something. Varo should be sued, investigated, and immediately shut down. I have had nothing but bad experiences since the beginning. Varo has been holding a $1500 deposit now for 11 days. This was a direct deposit and should have never been subject to a hold in the first place.

The deposit was to pay rent which is now very late and I'm now facing eviction proceedings in a few days. Varo has stolen my money and I'm not sure if or when I will be getting the money returned. I can't possibly express how much damage this blatant theft by Varo is causing me. By far the most incredible thing to me is that Varo is still permitted to operate after thousands of similar stories. A total outrage.😠

I filed a dispute with my Varo bank in Feb. and March 2024 for my account being fraudulently messed with. I use tap and pay a lot and It was apparently compromised. They cleared what I had in my bank account and I even contacted Varo's live support on pending charges I seen that I didn't make. They didn't do anything to help me but send me a new card. Then I kept getting emails that I had to verify myself. But my password was changed to log into my Varo, Which to me sounds like Varo remote workers to be honest. I complied and did my police report and filed an IC3 like I was told. Because they did cyber charges as well. Varo made me wait over 90 days to tell me they denied my dispute and didn't give valid reasons.

I kept appealing and my last appeal was in Sept. 9, 2024, and now it's been over the 75-day mark and when I called to see about it they tell me it's still ongoing and I will get an email that I never get by the way. The dispute is #D157 Amount was $6,884.43. Varo sent another email saying they needed the whole police report which I had sent them page by page even the letter from the Federal Trade Commission. Because this cyber attacker took my social and my identity and still has it. I never got my dispute refund, they keep ignoring me. I am fixing to file a class action lawsuit. Because whenever you need to dispute, they don't give you your money back and that isn't a bank to have.

I used to like them, they have pay anyone feature where it's via text, and credit building option, as well as advance you can build higher SUPPOSEDLY, with increased direct deposit and on time payments as well as account balances $0 or higher. I got up to $100, increased my direct deposits amount by $826, paid my advance 20 days early all 3 times and they DECREASED IT BY $50!! And make you chat about it with no way to talk on the phone to see why. And they can't answer the question via chat. That's horrible incentive and makes me want to close my account altogether as it's more a punishment to decrease when I do everything right, instead of rewarding with and increase like the claim. Bad business.
