What is E*TRADE?

E*TRADE users can take advantage of a full range of investment services, including stocks, futures, options, ETFs, mutual funds, bonds, CDs and prebuilt portfolios. Users can choose from a variety of account options. These include brokerage, retirement, core portfolios, managed portfolios and small business accounts, as well as online banking accounts.

Customers who want the guidance of a broker can take advantage of a range of services, including managed portfolio options. However, E*TRADE was designed to let the average Joe trade without the help of a broker, and the services that set it apart from other online investment firms do just that.

For example, E*TRADE has a widely-used app that was designed with beginner investors in mind, as well as a library of investing information geared toward users who are new to personal finance.

How does E*TRADE work?

New users should begin by opening an account through the website and downloading the E*TRADE app, a process that should take about ten minutes. You’ll choose between four types of accounts: brokerage, retirement, managed portfolios and small business retirement accounts.

E*TRADE suggests those new to investing consider brokerage accounts, specifically ETFs or mutual funds. Fund your account in one of four ways: by transferring online (three business days), wire transfer (same business day), transferring a brokerage account (10 business days) or mailing a check (five business days).

Once the account is funded, users form an investment plan using E*TRADE’s online tools. After deciding on a plan, search for trades that match your needs and enter those orders using an online trading ticket. Portfolios update in real time, and E*TRADE provides online tools to help investors monitor the market.

If you need help navigating E*TRADE, call, chat live on the website or email customer support 24/7.

E*TRADE fees

Online, self-directed stock orders are commission-free through E*TRADE. Fixed-income portfolios charge a blended annual advisory fee that can range from .35% to .75% depending on how much is invested and whether or not the portfolio is managed.

Online option orders are $0.65 per contract, though users who trade 30 times or more per quarter pay only $0.50 per contract. Broker-assisted transactions charge $25 per trade plus $0.65 per contract.

E*TRADE’s margin rates are graduated, beginning at 8.95% for those who invest $10,000 or less and ending at 5.45% for those who spend $1 million or more.

E*TRADE FAQ

What does E*TRADE do?

E*TRADE helps non-professional investors trade without the guidance of a broker. With investment opportunities including stocks, options, ETFs, mutual funds, bonds, CDs and prebuilt portfolios, E*TRADE offers a full spectrum of investment services. The company offers brokerage, retirement, core portfolio, managed portfolio and small business accounts, as well as traditional online banking accounts like checking and savings.

Is E*TRADE good for beginners?

Yes, this platform is great for beginners. E*TRADE guides new users through its app and online platform and educates them with infographics and charts. In addition, E*TRADE maintains a library of educational materials for new investors.

How much does it cost to use E*TRADE?

While stocks, options and ETFs cost $0 in commission, options contracts begin at $0.65 per contract and drop to $0.50 per contract after 30 trades per quarter. Futures contracts are $1.50 and bonds are $1 per bond with a minimum of 10 and a maximum of 250.

Does E*TRADE have a minimum balance?

While unmanaged brokerage accounts have no minimum balance, managed options do. Core portfolios, which are robo-managed funds, have a minimum of $500. Other managed portfolios have higher minimum balances: $25,000 for blend portfolios, $150,000 for dedicated portfolios and $250,000 for fixed-income portfolios.

Is E*TRADE good?

E*TRADE is a great choice for investors who hope to trade with no help from investment professionals. The company makes trading accessible for beginners with its educational materials and simple platform, and it provides access to customer service representatives who can help if you’re having technical issues. However, E*TRADE’s broker-assisted trades cost $25 per contract, so its managed portfolio option may be cost-prohibitive.

I opened a premium savings account during a promotion period and transferred in funds. A little later, I found out they wouldn't honor the promotion, which was the main reason to open the account. I got a call from a "relationship manager" who said he would look into the glitch, but never followed through. Needless to say, I closed the account.

Horrible experience with E*TRADE following the passing of my mom. They require you to open a account but will not let you open a account, their customer service team cannot determine why the online portal will not let you open the account and each time they say they did something but it will take 2-5 business days for it to take effect. If you ask for the inheritance off their platform they stop responding to you.

After seeing an advertising for ETRADE that stated, "... you can open your account today and begin trading today...", my wife and I did so ~ or rather, wasted our time attempting to do so anyway!!! After wasting a great deal of time providing our personal and banking information, we received an email instructing us to login to our account. Upon attempting to do so, we were asked to confirm our phone number. When we did so, the site said our phone number was unrecognized. It was the only phone number we put in our application.

We attempted this several times. We then called and an ETRADE representative told us that they use a "third-party" company for this part of their business and we needed to wait 24-48 hrs to use our account. He agreed that the problem was on-going with ETRADE and said he would file a report. We waited FOUR DAYS and attempted to sign in and again received a message that our phone number was not recognized! We called again and another representative told us it was a constant problem but there was nothing they could do! SO THE ADVERTISING ETRADE USES IS FALSE! It's designed to target and bait people into opening an account as we unfortunately fell for!

I now see the many customer service complaints on their own social media platforms. WE CLOSED OUR ACCOUNT! WHY would ANYONE TRUST a company with their money if that company can not even solve a simple problem like this, if they trust their customer service to a "third party company" they have no control of? Why would anyone trust a company that is so transparent about falsely advertising to their customers??? BEWARE!!! Although I suspect ETRADE sensors these posts, I sincerely hope this will be posted to prevent others from having their precious time wasted and/or worse!

I invested 8k to make a trade in your platform. 5 Day potential warning to actually use the money. Hot stock. Waited, money is still not available. I JUST WANT TO BUY A STOCK AND I CAN'T BUY STOCK ON YOUR PLATFORM. This is absolutely insane. I will literally recommend your platform to no one. This is a terrible customer experience. I reached out to your "customer service team" which is a bunch of bots that have no idea how to help a customer. If I could rate you a 0/10 I would.

My husband passed away four months ago and his Etrade/Morgan Stanley brokerage account named our family trust as beneficiary. I am the sole trustee.

I submitted all of the required paperwork to open a trust account to receive the transfer and, after more than a month and many calls to MorganStanley/Etrade this was finally done. Although the account and funds are in place, MS has placed a hold on half of the account. I have made repeated calls to both customer and estate services and have been given multiple assurances that the issue would be resolved. I was even told two days ago that the problem had been fixed and that I would receive a confirmation call the next morning. The call never came. Again this morning I was told by a “supervisor” after requesting that the case be escalated that he would call back in a few minutes. This was 6 hours ago.

While the phone representatives are polite, commitments are repeatedly not honored and the issue remains unresolved. I have done everything that was asked of me and want all of my money to be released so that I can transfer the account to a different brokerage firm. MS is not only incompetent, but they have no regard for their customers.

High yield savings acct is a joke or scam whatever you want to call it. My wife had a acct and I tried to open a bank acct. They took 2 weeks and after sending them pics, docusign stuff, letters (ridiculous amount) they closed my acct because we use the same computer and therefore they automatically assume that when she logs in it is me, even though we don't log in to each other's acct and besides We're married. Now they want to close her acct. They're coming up with reasons to not honor their promotion. Stay away unless you like headaches and wasting time. I went to another bank and opened my acct 1 day and it's fine.

74 years old with joint account then with wife tried to access account. Account has been locked and required to provide ID; provided verbal ID to someone on the phone. Still would not give access to account. Insisted that wife also had to be ID; wife stumble in the process so they locked account and required to upload legal ID; provided driver's license. Uploaded it and then they required a picture of driver license next to face of wife that they said they could not verify. Went to Morgan Stanley yesterday in Palm Beach Garden office and associate SVC manager said they could do nothing for us.

I am writing about both eTrade's high yield savings and brokerage accounts. I am especially upset at the savings account. You claim to give 3.5% on the deposit when we open a new account yet one week after we opened the account, you dropped our interest rate to 3.35%, while advertising 3.75% interest rate on the exact same savings!!! That is just fraud!!! This brings back the bad experience from the brokerage account I had from a few years back. You have been doing an excellent job losing your customers! Even one star is too high for you. I am disgusted.

I have been an E*TRADE customer for almost 20 years and they have sucked since they were purchased from Morgan Stanley. Instead of getting any type of help the Platinum support they want to send you to a Morgan Stanley person to sell you something. I have a couple of million, and my Platinum guy is a kid that has worked in the industry for 3 years and knows nothing.
