Discover is a well-known credit card and banking company that also offers personal loans. Its personal loans range from $2,500 to $40,000, with repayment terms from 36 to 84 months. These loans can be used for many purposes, including debt consolidation, weddings, medical bills, dream vacations and home renovations.

Pros

  • Lower minimum loan amount than some competitors
  • Funds loans as soon as the next day after approval
Cons
  • Requires $25,000 minimum household income
  • No co-signers allowed

Discover Personal Loans requirements

To qualify for a Discover personal loan, you need to:

  • Have a valid U.S. Social Security number
  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Have an individual or household annual income of at least $25,000
  • Have a physical address
  • Have an active email address and access to a computer or mobile device to finalize your application online

Unfortunately, personal loans cannot be co-signed to help you meet these requirements.

If you do meet those requirements, Discover will then evaluate your application on other criteria, such as your credit history and recent credit activity.

Discover Personal Loans application process

You can see if you qualify for a Discover personal loan and preview your rate on the company’s website without hurting your credit score. You can then apply online or call to speak with a Discover loan specialist. Note that if you move forward with an application, you will have to consent to a hard credit inquiry, which can temporarily lower your score.

To apply, you need to disclose basic personal information along with how you plan to use the loan, how much you want to borrow and how long you need to pay it back. You’ll also need to provide some financial information, including your:

  • Income
  • Employment
  • Bank account number
  • Bank routing number
  • Details about your creditor(s) and account(s) if you’re using the loan for debt consolidation

You should receive an answer to your applications on the same day, provided no information is missing. If you are approved, you’ll be able to review your rate and terms before accepting. After accepting the loan offer, you may receive your funds as soon as the next business day.

Discover Personal Loans rates and fees

The annual percentage rates (APRs) on Discover Personal Loans range from 7.99% to 24.99% as of publication. Applicants with excellent credit scores will qualify for lower rates.

Discover doesn’t charge upfront fees, meaning you will not pay an origination fee to get your loan. There are no prepayment penalties if you choose to pay off your loan early, either. Any payments you make beyond your set monthly payment will be applied directly to your principal balance.

Discover states that there are “no fees of any kind” on its personal loans, including late fees if you miss a payment. But if you’re having trouble making payments, contact Discover to figure out your options.

Long time customer. Not that it means anything to such a large company. Applied for my 3rd personal loan with great credit and awesome payment history with them. I feel like the penalized me for paying all my loans off early and don’t want my business anymore. They have merged with capital one. Not a company you can rely on anymore.

I was approved for a personal loan and at the end when I received an email to accept the loan I noticed that will mail the funds by check at my fiscal address. When I told them that we do not receive mail at the fiscal address, that needed to be send by direct deposit to my bank account or to a PO box their answer was that they do not do direct deposit or PO box. I find it to be discriminating. First they will not take my application in any other language but English and now I am being discriminated for not receiving mail at my fiscal address and I do pay the post office $280 a year for a box.

Applied for and was approved for a personal loan. I have been a Discover Credit Card customer for at least 20 years. Discover sent me a so-called personal Invitation ID number for bill consolidation loan which is supposed to streamline the process. In addition to verifying my Loan ID number and the special code number on the back of my Discover Credit Card, they wanted me to scan their app and send copies of the front and back of my driver's license and a current photo of myself. After having accounts hacked in the past, I do not use apps on my cell phone. I called Discover and the rep said, get a friend or relative to do this for me. So, I applied with Lending Club and was approved without having to utilize my cell phone.

I am so angry and it really is sad that Discover Loans would treat a fully disabled customer that suffered a Traumatic Brain Injury and spent the last 4 years in 8 hospitals. I spoke with a woman in Utah and she confirmed that the bills were being returned due to them using an old address and marked by USPS as undeliverable. Yes....she confirmed that on multiple occasions. Now I get a letter from Rich ** and there it is again...THE WRONG ADDRESS. I was charged 20 $39 late fees and never got a bill....Please remember I was in 8 hospitals with a life threatening Brain Injury and never even received a simple phone call about the many returned mail pieces.... Where is the Customer Service...

Also....they have zero compassion or could care less about customers that experience a life changing injury. I was hit with this on my stellar credit rating of 800+..... What a terrible thing to do to a now disabled person.... DO NOT TRUST OR USE THIS COMPANY.... THEY HAVE ZERO HEART!!!! WISH I COULD GIVE ZERO STARS..... ONE IS TOO GOOD.

I did all that now can't get a hold of anyone to get my money. I wanted a loan to pay off some bills. Now my phones and electric is going to be turned off.

I went through the loan approval process and, after jumping through all the hoops, was finally approved with no issues—until the very end. They sent me a link asking for the AX number from the bottom of my Discover card. I explained over the phone that I didn’t have the card on me at the moment, and was told to "Click other options" to verify my identity. As soon as I clicked that, my loan was automatically DENIED for failure to verify my identity.

The real kicker? I was transferred to the credit card department, where I found out that I had been sent a new card in January, but never activated it. After spending over an hour on the phone, pleading for a resolution, the only thing they offered was that I reapply in 90 days. This is the first time I’ve EVER been denied for a loan. I never thought I would be denied for a loan because I didnt have a credit card in my possession. The card services team was polite and apologetic, but the loan processing department was rude, unhelpful, and honestly, they acted like a bunch of characters from Whoville with bad attitudes. What a frustrating and completely unnecessary ordeal!

I have a Discover card which quite honestly I’m gonna pay off and then not even deal with these with this company anymore. I have had personal loans from Discover for several years. In 2022, I took additional funds and consolidated my loan. A few months later, I decided it was better for my finances to change my payment date from the 27th of the month to the 2nd of the month. I made the change myself online, which turned out to be a huge mistake. Over a year passed and my regular monthly payment was deducted on the 2nd of the month from my bank account. I'm a 70 year old retiree, and I was not in the habit of logging onto the Discover website to monitor the account. Later, I was shocked to find out that Discover was charging me a $39 late fee each month since I changed the payment date! This is even though my monthly payments were paid automatically to Discover every 30 days. I was informed that the due date can only be changed by Discover, although the customer is free to change the automatic payment date online. So I racked up late fees of over $600!

When I consolidated the loan in 2022, the paper statements I got each month stopped and they enrolled me in online statements, which I never understood that this was being changed. I would have seen the fees on a paper statement. I knew they had stopped. But I trusted Discover and thought all was fine. Discover never contacted me to tell me about all the late fees. They just let them pile up. When I found out about the fees I called Discover. They took off 3 late fees as a 'courtesy', but refused to remove the remaining $468. They have taken advantage of the situation, even though they know this was an unfortunate set of circumstances and I had no idea I was racking up these fees. They are a company of low integrity. Beware!

If I could leave zero stars I would. Discover Personal Loans are ridiculous. My husband and I applied for a loan for $10,000.00. We submitted all documentation and there was one step left before we’d be approved. The representative was on the phone with us and stated that she needed to verify our phone number and we’d be all set. She put us on hold to call us. We both had our phones at the ready to answer. Nothing. The representative came back on the line and stated that since she could not verify our phone number our loan was declined. Whoa, whoa, whoa! What?

We were holding our phones, they have our numbers on the application. No, they use a “tool” which provides a telephone number to call and we did not answer. They pulled a phone number from our credit report for our old land line which we haven’t had for over ten years. We said that of course we didn’t answer, the number no longer exists. She stated they can only make one phone call a day and she had made it so we were done. But, she could send it for further review. This was yesterday. Today we called and were told our information couldn’t be verified so we were declined. We tried to explain again to no avail. So they’re telling us they called a phone number we did not have and we didn’t answer so we are declined. Are you serious? We told them when they make their one phone call a day, today, it would be the same outcome. It makes NO sense! I would advise everyone not to apply with Discover Personal Loans.

I was doing well, had a great credit score, great job. Then everything snowballed. I moved, had a job.. got laid off, nearly 2 months later I still haven't received my unemployment, and I ended up evicted. You CANNOT set up any type of payment plan through the app - that's just a ridiculous way for them to waste your time. So, I called. The guy the I talked to had to transfer me to someone in their "finance" department. She insisted on a payment that day but for some reason, I'd have to call back at a later date to discuss a possible lower payment plan. I don't understand why? It's just giving me the runaround. All the while, I've been getting multiple calls from multiple numbers about this account. I'm talking at least 5 calls a day, all hours of the day, 7 days a week. I'm going to report them. I'm not going to keep calling them back and getting nowhere, it's ridiculous.

I applied for Discover personal loan 2 days ago. I was excited I would get approved. I firstly got my pre-approval online without a hard pull. Then went ahead to continue with my application which is a hard pull. I was told I needed to speak with an agent to move forward. I immediately called the number provided online. Spoke to this lady who was pleasant and told me I have to send in my driver’s license front/back, social security card front, utility bill or bank statement showing current address and 3 months bank statement showing cash flow. Mind you I have an excellent credit of 830, have been a loyal Discover cardholder for 7 year with 0 balance monthly and a credit limit of $16,900. I was too confident there won't be any hiccup.

I was only borrowing $40k. I sent everything they needed and waited 1 biz day to get a response. When I checked the status of my application it stated, “you are almost done, pls call us to get your rate- as part of our loan process, we need to speak with you right away to verify your identity (for security purposes) and to finalize the details of your loan” and this was the number 1-866-722-2374. Of course anyone who sees this will be 100% sure it is golden. Just call and speak to an agent right. Lo and behold I called and the young guy asked for my identity and thinking we will be talking about the rate of the loan. He said, “well after checking your application unfortunately we can’t move forward with this loan and we will be sending you a letter on the reason behind this.

I was shocked and disappointed. How on Earth will you deceive your client to call only to hear a denial. Just why will you tell me online to call to get a rate and you deny me over the phone. That is ridiculous. I had no reason for them to deny me. The pre- approval rate monthly payment was $993. I kept asking this young man what was the reason for denial and he stated after checking my bank statement that there was no sufficient cash flow. That is pure lie. I make monthly income of $7125. Why won’t I be able to afford just $993 to pay off my loan. I have been a loyal cardholder with excellent payment history never default in payment.

So when I realized it was effortless arguing back and forth I just cut the call. It was so annoying to say the least to be deceived to call. They could have just denied the application right there online instead of me calling. My advice to anyone trying to get discover personal loan DONT DO IT, it’s a pure waste of time and energy. They just better stick with their credit card but they are horrible with loans.

Discover Personal Loans sent me a pre-approved letter, because according to them, I was a good payer and loyal customer, so I did the application, reason for home remodeling. I've been loyal to Discover for almost 9 years, I told my friends, co- workers and relatives how Discover is highly recommended, good customer service and they understand your situation and they will help you until yesterday's decisions, "insufficient funds to repay the loan". I was so upset because I never late on my payments and I sent all my checking and savings acct.

Considering I have the money to cover the requested loan, my credit score is 774 (I worked really hard to get that score!) But the decision was denied. It doesn't make sense, Good Credit Score + Good Payment History + Have Money on the Bank to pay+ loyal customer for 8 to 9 years = denied. Something is not right, and now I needed to work on my credit score again because they did a hard pulled on my credit score.

They asked for a copy of his driver's license, a copy of his Social Security card, a copy of a bank statement or utility bill, and bank statements for past three months. I thought this was going way overboard for this credit scenario on a $12K loan. It was three days before we logged in without any notification from them to check my application status, where we found out they declined the loan because they could not confirm his identity. What couldn't they confirm?

We supplied all the information they asked for, and they just closed out the application without so much as a phone call or asking any questions. We called, and the representative tried to pass it off as a problem with his credit report. I just pulled the credit reports, where there was nothing unusual. Now, his score dropped eight points because of the hard inquiry. Consequently, this has made it harder to shop for another loan as the quoted rates are now higher. Bogus! Thanks a lot, Discover!

I have been a Discover customer for about two years now. I have always been impressed with them and I never had any problems until now. I kept receiving invitations to take out a preapproved personal loan. I decided to consolidate some debt and get a little extra to put down on a car. I was approved for far more money than I needed and I went with the lowest amount to be paid off in the quickest amount of time. We worked out all the details and I spent an hour on the phone getting everything lined up.

As we were finishing up she told me that I needed to verify employment, not income, just employment. She and I decided that I would do my best to provide what she needed, otherwise, I would call back and she said that it would not be a problem. She told me that they could verify employment in other ways if necessary. From the hard inquiry they ran, my credit took a 46 point hit. I know that will bounce back in the next couple months, so normally it would be no big deal. I called back today to finalize things and to explain where I was with my employer. I spoke with Debra in Salt Lake city office and she was very rude and condescending.

I can tell you, she’s been with Discover for over 20 years, because she made that clear to me! She told me the first lady (the one that was kind and helpful) did not tell me the truth and unless I could provide the documentation she needed that the loan was finished. Quick recap, now my credit score is 50 points lower and any interest rate I get approved for is going to be much higher because Discover ran the hard inquiry, approved me, and then yanked it out from under me. I have never even made a late payment to them and I am appalled. I wasted all of this time and I was counting on them to follow through with what they said. That just didn’t happen and I am so disappointed in them.

They were my number one card and I have always had a pretty good experience with customer service. That is no longer the case and I am pretty sad about it. I suggest that you tread carefully. You can’t count on what they say so I would suggest that you pursue other options along with this one and don’t let them run your credit because you are not really preapproved. You’re not even approved after they tell you you are approved! I hope this review helps. You have to be leery of all credit cards, and this one is no different.

She has suffered a tremendous loss in wages due to lack of transportation. They are deliberately making my daughter suffer for a debt that has already been paid. I have proof of payment and Discover is claiming payment was never received. However Western Union is confirming payment was cashed and cleared. Someone please guide me in the direction to resolve this matter.

They send you a letter with a personalized invitation saying because of my credit history I am a valued customer and should apply for a personal loan to consolidate debt. I do have a cc with Discover as well. I earn a big salary and can afford to pay for it. I do like to shop around for best options so because I shopped around I have too many hard inquiries and they can't offer me the loan. Why send me a false letter based on credit history but based on hard inquiries you can't offer it. Stay away. I found 2 other reputable companies far better than Discover. Stay away!

I applied for a loan with Discover about a month ago. BIG MISTAKE. I highly recommend never to use Discover for a loan! I needed the loan for periodontal surgery. I was fortunate I found a great periodontist that felt Periodontal Surgery was not needed. I applied to Discover for a Five Thousand Dollar Loan prior to my visit to this Periodontist. GREAT! I have taken loans or had a large balance on my credit card and many payments towards lowering the balance-Bank Of America was great for paying the loan and no longer needed the loan. I wanted to pay about forty dollars today towards my balance on my Discover loan online. No luck.

Discover makes it impossible to lowering balances on Loans and probably their credit cards. Never will I use Discover again! I paid my first payment on my Discover loan and all the payment applied did not lower my balance but was used for interest payments and other fees! Discover Loans are a ripoff only to create more wealth for their bank at the expense of the individual with their fees and interest charges which only prolongs the loan payments! I will never use Discover for anything. I probably will toss the card in the garbage after chopping the card in pieces! Stay away for Discover for anything esp Loans. YOU will regret this as I have already!

I cosigned a loan for my son. I ended up having to pay it back. It was supposed to be a fixed rate loan. They do raise the interest rate every year. They have never lowered the interest rate. I make the payments yet the only access I have to the account is to make a payment. I cannot look back at the history of the account. Half the time the online payment system is out of order and I have to call a stranger and make my payment over the phone. I don't receive any mail nor any other information about this loan I am paying. They don't treat me like a customer and I recommend going with any other loan company.

The advertisement mailed to me stated to consolidate your bills at a low 2.9 APR which wasn't true. Discover has me locked in at 10.99 APR. I called to see if they would decrease my APR and they said "NO" even though they are getting their payment directly from my bank every month. Consumers Beware! Don't trust Discover in giving you a low interest APR. It's all false advertisement.

If you are applying for a personal loan and have an excellent credit score but you have an accent do not waste your time. They will make loose score point and then they will deny you application. When you apply online they will tell you will be approved with excellent rate but you need to call them and then base on the person you talk to your loan will be approved or not. If you have an accent forget it. My score is 772 and 85k income. All my payment are on time, customer with Discover for almost 3 years, credit line 70k from other banks, and when I applied is just to shop for lower rate for my loan. I am not in a financial hardship and I told the agent that upfront. I applied for this only because they were bombarding my mailbox with offers. My advice stay away from this unfair discriminating bank. Yeah I also asked the agent what's the reason he asked me to hold on 3 minutes and then he was saying I will receive details in a letter.

I feel cheated on how my payments are applied. I have 3 different loans and they applied all my payments to the balance that will be expired on 08/2017 (over 1 year to expired) leaving me to pay off the entire balance of 9700 before August 4 2016 (one month to expired). This NOT what I was told when I requested the loans. They make everything possible for customers to pay interest and that is **. I talked Janet a Discover supervisor on July 11 2016 with ID ** but she didn’t want to do anything to fix the problem. She rather closed my accounts before she do anything for a customers like me who is being with Discover for YEARS. What Discover is doing is unethical and should be changed. After I pay all my balances I will closed my personal and business accounts and I NEVER want to receive anything in my mailbox from Discover!

It was not expired so I am thinking identity theft. I call and after 45 minutes on the phone and my identity confirmed I am put on hold for some unexplained reason and then there was a disconnect. I went back to the website thinking that I have my identity cleared so all should be golden! NO, I got the same **. I called again and after talking and explaining for a half hour, I was put on hold for 30 seconds and I was then quoted a monthly payment which was not within the confines of the offer. I expressed that to this rep and I was again put on hold for a minute+. I hung up the phone knowing that I am dealing with money grubbing "Made-offs!!"

She call me up and tell me that week should be closing on this loan by Dec 5 2014 or by Dec 8. She told me this on Dec 2, 2014 then she went on to say that I should do not need to buy my mortgage this month, that what she will do. The next day at 5:15 pm I get a call from her telling me that the closing is not happen, that the underwriter does not want to sign on it because my payment is going higher than just me. After receiving a letter from Discover Personal Loans offering competitive interest rate of 6.99% to 18.99% on personal loans, my husband decided to applied last month. Even though he has excellent credit and does not have any late payment on his credit report, he only qualified for 13.99% interest rate. Today, I received a letter this time under my name, so my husband right away said "Don't even bother, that is false advertisement". I disagreed and decided to applied. What a disappointment. After an hour of back and forth question, they came back with the same interest rate they offered my husband the previous month. I asked, "how do you determine who qualifies for a 6.99%?" The rep. was not able to answer the question. I insisted and her answer was "there are several factor". I maintained calm through the whole conversation because I understand that the rep was just doing her job (poorly because she had no knowledge of the factors).

To make this story even better, I was transferred to a manager where she basically told me the same thing. She said that she was going to look into this further. I told her, "please do not waste my time unless you offer me a LOWER interest rate (I previously mentioned to the rep that I was paying an interest rate of 11.99%)." The manager insisted and just kept reading from a computer screen telling how the 13.99% was going to benefit me. I finally said to her, "You are not listening to what I am telling you. You keep reading from your computer screen and it is aggravating me...is better to end this conversation because I do not want to take my frustration on you". Total waste of time! Do yourself a favor if you receive their advertisement and not even bother! DISCOVER if this is a false advertisement, the least that you can do is hire people that support your FALSE information!!

I received a "pre-approval" letter from Discover Personal Loans. They quoted a loan rate of 6.99% to 18.99%. While I am not naive, I did not expect the 6.99% rate. With their pre-approval letter I expected a decent rate. They said that they were pleased to offer me a rate of 15.99%. I said that this was more than doubled the rate listed. I asked for a supervisor to express my concerns. She said that she was allowed to go down two points to 13.99%. I told her that this still was double the advertised rate and all that Discover did for me was waste my time and lower my credit score by their repeated inquiry. When I asked why the rate was so high with an excellent credit score, the supervisor could not answer me. She said that she was not able to tell me from her location.

Consumer beware. Discover is practicing a "bait and switch" scam. The only thing they will do is lower your credit score with the inquiry and waste your time. The pen is mightier than the sword and I will use all social media to inform the unsuspecting.

I received a loan application through Discover Card and the lowest available interest rate is 7.99% subject to approval. You are not guaranteed the 7.99% but it's a starting point and I get that, HOWEVER, I have PERFECT CREDIT...PERFECT!! It runs somewhere in the 780 area. I pay zero rent/mortgage and have a fantastic job at a Fortune 100 company. The loan would be for $15,000 or debt consolidation which I plan on paying off in 2 years vs the 5 years I applied for (granted they don't know that; I also have very little debt.). At any rate and after being on the phone with the pretend loan representative for about 15 minutes (I applied online the previous day), I am told, "Congratulations, you are approved for the $15,000 as requested for a great interest rate of 9.9%" - WHAT?

My head just about popped off. I couldn't believe it!!! I was so mad I was shaking. I do not allow inquiries on my credit report unless ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN it will come to fruition BECAUSE IT ALWAYS DOES. I asked her THREE TIMES what made her give me the higher interest rate and I kept getting the same answer, "It was based on what I found on your credit report after careful review." - so what does this mean you ask? I have no idea. I asked her to be a little bit more specific but she said the same thing....I asked again, "Is it my debt to income.... What is it" - The woman just didn't know which is so very reckless to have someone barely trained making credit decisions and creating inquiries for NOTHING who have no business doing this.

I will NEVER EVER EVER do business with Discover as long as I live on this earth. Oh, one more thing. I had credit monitoring through them for YEARS AND YEARS... You wanna know how they tell you when you have a new inquiry or new accounts, THEY SEND YOU A LETTER IN THE MAIL! WHAT? So by the time I get it, my identity has been long stolen. UNREAL!!!
