What is Discover Bank?

Discover Bank is the online bank division of Discover Financial Services. It offers savings accounts, checking accounts, CDs and money market accounts, as well as retirement accounts, personal and home loans, and credit cards. Discover does not offer special student or senior bank accounts, though the $0 account minimum and $0 account maintenance fee make it a good choice for students over the age of 18 and older adults.

Discover Bank is an FDIC-insured institution, meaning that deposits are insured up to $250,000 per customer. As an online bank, Discover does not have any physical branches for customers to visit, but its customer service is available 24/7, 365 days via phone.

How does Discover Bank work?

Discover Bank is available to all U.S. residents who are at least 18 years old. Opening a savings or checking account is simple, especially since you do not need to have a minimum opening deposit. To open an account, you will need to provide your personal information, such as your name, address, Social Security number and date of birth. If additional documents are needed, you can upload them securely on the site.

Once you have an online account, you can link it to other financial accounts to enable direct money transfers. Additionally, you can set up direct deposit for your paycheck, and when using this feature for your checking account, you can receive your check up to two days early.

Discover offers the latest banking technology for customers, including digital wallets that allow you to connect your bank account to Google Pay, Samsung Pay or Apple Pay. The Discover app can sync to your wearable device so you can check your balance and account activity with just a tap.

Additionally, with the Discover mobile app, you can manage your money and freeze your debit card instantly if you lose your card.

Discover Bank products and services

Discover Bank offers competitive online banking services, with high interest rates and minimal fees. It also offers an automatic savings feature, Auto Redemption, to make earning a high APY easier. The feature automatically deposits your debit card cashback bonus into your selected savings account each month. Below are some other products and features.

Checking account
Discover’s checking account comes with no account fees or insufficient funds fees. Customers can earn 1% cash back on up to $3,000 in debit card purchases each month. Discover has a network of over 60,000 ATMs across the country for no-fee withdrawals for customers.
High-yield savings account
With Discover’s savings account, you can enjoy zero fees on account maintenance, insufficient funds and excessive withdrawals. There is no minimum deposit requirement.
Certificate of deposit
You can choose from CDs that range in terms from three to 10 years without any fees. These high-yield CDs come with a guaranteed return but are also subject to early withdrawal fees. Minimum deposits start at $2,500.
Money market account
Enjoy the perks of a high-yield savings account paired with the convenience of a checking account with a money market account. Discover’s money market accounts do not have an account maintenance fee, insufficient funds fee or excessive withdrawal fee. You need a minimum of $2,500 to open a money market account, but you do not need to keep a minimum balance.

Discover Bank fees

Discover does not charge any account-related fees, though there are a few fees that customers need to be aware of. There is a $30 service charge for each outgoing wire transfer from your Discover account.

Withdrawing from your CDs early will also incur fees, which vary based on the CD term you have. The fees range from three months of simple interest to 24 months of simple interest. You will also pay a fee for using an out-of-network ATM.

Discover Bank FAQ

How do I add people to my Discover Bank account?

Discover online banking allows you to add authorized users, also known as joint account holders, to your account, as long as they are U.S. residents. You must fill out an authorization form that includes their personal information and signature.

You can do an online transfer from your Discover Bank account to another financial account through the site or the mobile app. There are also 60,000 no-fee ATMs across the country. Additionally, online bill pay and your debit card and checkbook make it possible to pay others.

Extremely disappointed with Discover's dispute process. I was a victim of documented medical billing fraud by a local dentist who diagnosed an aggressive, multi-quadrant procedure that independent dental charts from just months prior proved was clinically impossible. When confronted with the proof, the dentist even texted me admitting he would wipe out the fake balance. Despite me uploading the independent medical charts, the insurance company's original denials, and the dentist’s text admission, Discover sided with the merchant simply because the merchant had a signed card slip. Discover's 'fraud protection' is an automated joke that fails to look at actual fraud evidence. Moving my business back to a bank that actually protects its cardholders.

Up until today with Discover I have had pretty decent service, I can't express enough how badly I want to close this account but I have to wait until they release my funds that they have a hold on. Horrible staff. Even worse customer service unwilling to provide any help and basically call you a liar. They act like my money is their personal account. Won't release anything even though with lots of research and everything that says they can even though said research gave me detailed info on who to speak to phone numbers everything they wont lift the hold. Absolutely the most rude, unhelpful, unwilling, entitled worthless bank to ever work with. Again I can not wait to get rid of this bank. Worst mistake to ever join here. If I could give a -100 oh boy I would give them -101.

I have been a Discover card holder since 1988 and they used to be a decent card company. HOWEVER, in 2025 they (a) DISCONTINUED eBILL SERVICES TO ALL BANKS EXCEPT FOR DISCOVER BANK, which negatively impacts my online bill pay through my local bank that I've used for 10+ years, and (b) they require TWO DIFFERENT LOG-IN CREDENTIALS FOR TWO DIFFERENT DISCOVER CARDS unlike ALL other banks (BoA, PNC, Chase, etc.). If you're new to Discover, go somewhere else. ALL THEY NOW WANT TO DO IS SELL YOU ALL THEIR OTHER DISCOVER BANKING PRODUCTS WHETHER YOU WANT THEM OR NOT and most if not all of those are SO UNCOMPETITIVE with other national banks. Stay away from Discover!!!

This is the worst bank experience after having my money there for a few years. I have such a hard time wiring money to an escrow company for my down payment for a house. They couldn’t help me with the wire and now sending a cashier's check by mail. Closing date is postponed because of discover bank not able to do the wire transfer to an escrow company for closing. If you need money to be transferred for down payment or huge expenses you won’t get it from them on time. Run away from this bank and all they say is “sorry for the inconvenience” when they cannot process the money on time. I don’t want anyone to go through what I am going through.

I’ve been a long-time customer, but this recent experience has completely shattered my trust in Discover. I followed their instructions for expedited processing by overnighting money orders (at nearly $70 out-of-pocket) to fund my account. Weeks passed — no confirmation, no updates, and no communication from Discover. Only after I threatened to escalate the issue to senior leadership did someone bother to reach out. The rep even acknowledged that the deposit should have been processed — yet instead, they rejected the money orders and mailed them back to me, with no explanation or apology. This is completely unacceptable for a bank that claims to value its customers. Not only did they waste my time and money, but they also failed to take responsibility or offer any support throughout the process. If you’re looking for a responsive, reliable financial institution — look elsewhere.

Online reviews reveal that discover bank is very frequently hacked and that there is no fraud protection with them. I can no longer recommend Discover bank and will be publicly discouraging everyone I know from doing any sort of business with them.

I can’t believe the low rating for Discover Bank. I’ve had their credit card since 2006 and never had an issue. So several years ago I saw a 200 dollar bonus for opening a regular high interest savings account. I decided to give it a try. I was with one of the big and awful banks and was getting next to nothing in interest for any of my accounts and TERRIBLE customer service. So I decided to try the checking account also. I have never been happier with a bank.

I noticed that people were complaining about not being able to make a cash deposit, but I read awhile back that you can make cash deposits at any Walmart to Discover bank. Maybe it should be better advertised. Any time I’ve called customer service for any reason, they are US based and courteous and helpful. In summary, I can’t think of even one complaint that I could make against Discover Bank and I highly recommend them for credit card, checking and savings accounts.

Discover is an online bank, and assured me that they can complete all banking transactions and needs online. I have a check that was written to me and my fiancé, and we do not have a joint account. We agreed that I would deposit the check into my account as it was a refund on a security deposit I had paid. Discover Bank rejected the mobile deposit, saying we do not have a joint account and he did not endorse the check. They refused to have him endorse it and send it again via mobile deposit, saying I had to either request a new check and have us both sign or mail it to them as once a check is rejected once on mobile deposit, they will not let you re-submit. They provided no reasoning behind this, just saying it is their "policy."

They also refused to pay for expedited mail with tracking, saying I am responsible for that. And with it being mailed, it could be lost and that would be on me to get a new check. It will take 5-7 business days to reach them, 5-7 business days for them to process it and it may still be rejected! They were not truthful that they could handle things online and they are keeping me from my money that is rightfully mine.

Having a relationship with Discover card, thought that moving my savings to their bank branch was a good move. WRONG! What a mess - agent taking app made an error on address, and could not open our account without address proof. We provided proof, received confirmation online of that submission and promised a reply in 10 days or less. 17 days later, no response. I called twice on days 13 and 16, and got hung up on as they transferred me from department to department. And they had enough of my info to call me back, but never did. I called again on day 17 and after 3 department transfers, was told I had to provide additional proofs besides driver's licenses - which were correct to address, but they said not. And they won't tell you what is in error, and proof they asked for additionally was not possible.

Their mistake in taking my application is Discover still in error on their end. They have been of no help, and I asked them to just delete my application - which they refused. We walked away with them having our Soc Sec numbers and personal info, but no account. Terrible experience. Beware of their incompetence based on our experience and others here on Consumer Affairs. Then, as I was standing in a store, paying for some groceries, the card declined, even though there were enough funds in the account to cover the charge. I had to pay with a different card/account. That was embarrassing. Got home and logged into my account and they had pulled the money from my account as if the transaction had gone through. I called them and they were nice and told me they were opening an investigation. A couple weeks later I get a letter saying they were denying my claim. So they basically stole my money. I actually worried that I was dealing with a fraud. I set up an account with Discover high interest savings. A test occurred between my bank and Discover. Three days later I transferred $100. Today 1/16/25, I tried to transfer $400 and got a message indicating I could not complete transaction. I was given three alternatives, go to my bank, make the transfer through their app, or use snail mail. I contacted customer support.

The first person, Love, said that because my account was new, I would have to wait a while, but she couldn't define the time limit. Her supervisor, Julia, told me that my bank was not in the network so the transfer couldn't be made. She couldn't explain why I had already transferred funds successfully. Her supervisor, Khai, told me the same thing, my bank was not in the network. I told her I wanted to speak with someone higher and she said I'd have to write a letter. I gave up and called my bank. My bank told me that Discover uses a third party called Zelle, and that my bank does not use that entity because it is going away and will soon be unavailable. There you have it. I closed my account. Discover is not the kind of institution I can trust or respect.

Nearly everything they advertise about the cash back account is false. There are ATMs fees, no place to make deposits, and not accepted at as many places that take Visa and Mastercard. They continually put a 10 day hold on my deposits. The cashback I earned disappeared. I asked what happened to it and they said I didn't redeem it, so it was forfeited. Customer service is even worst. The representative answer, but they just read a script over and over. They don't really know about your account, but will try to small talk you out of what you are asking for. I asked for a supervisor and was told none are available for the same day. You have to leave a message, they tell the supervisor you need help the next day and they the supervisor has 24-48 hours to call you back. When you put money in it is immediate, but when you want your money back it takes 7 to 10 business days. Not worth the hassle.

They tried to tell me to link my bank account with an unsecure third party for two weeks while I awaited my new debit card's arrival which is not doable by any means.

The supervisors are useless and refuse to make exceptions within their policies to help customers who were targeted by scammers. I was hung up on multiple times today as well as hounded for my complete social security number by the same employee multiple times despite saying I was not comfortable giving my full social security number because I knew it was not required to complete the actions needed to look into my account. He only needed the last 4 to complete the actions necessary to pull up my account in their system. It took me 9 hours to try rectify my issues and even after all of that time, nothing was done to help me as a customer. I would never recommend such a terrible place to anyone. I've been a customer of Discover Bank for several years, and have always been very happy with them. UNTIL NOW, since they've been purchased by Capital One. A new policy has been stated that when we deposit checks (via the mobile app? The only way I to deposit since there are no branches) that Discover will make $250 of my deposit available immediately, and I've got to wait for the rest of my money. This is a problem when you deposit multiple checks, since they don't disclose how much is being held back. In addition, I recently deposited a check smaller than the $250, and the entire amount of that check is listed online as "available within the next 30 days". THE ENTIRE AMOUNT SHOULD BE IN MY ACCOUNT RIGHT NOW.

I don't feel Discover is as honest as they were in the past, since this merger. They certainly are not transparent when reporting on my money. It also seems they jumped the gun on withholding customer funds, doing it before they've done the appropriate updates to their website to provide customers with needed information. Apparently it's more important now to keep funds in Discover than it is to provide good service. Overnight investing by Capital One is more important than customers. Since I usually need to deposit multiple small checks, they must feel it's fine for me to have to do a spreadsheet in order to know how much money they're holding back, so I can make sure it's deposited. Discover Bank seems to no longer value its customers as it has in the past, so I'll be moving my money elsewhere.

The staff is not only rude but also highly incompetent, showing a complete lack of understanding of their own processes. Every interaction with them feels frustrating and unprofessional. They seem to have no regard for customer service, making it clear that they do not prioritize the needs or concerns of their clients. I would strongly advise anyone to avoid banking with them.

I was looking for a good debit card to use for online purchases only. I ordered the card and BEFORE I got the card, I received 3 emails (different days) about putting money on the card, which was a red flag for me. When the card finally arrived, I received 1 more email about adding money (2 days after it came) and then 5 days later, another email about they were cancelling the card because I haven't added money yet. A lot of red flags for me and after reading these reviews, I'm glad I didn't.

Discover reported my late payment of less than $10 due to an auto pay error to the credit agencies and won't remove it, damaging my credit score. There are other banking institutions that are more flexible on this. Discover says they won't remove a credit reporting unless it's an error from Discover (a LIE). I updated my banking information for Discover's auto pay. But I don't use Discover credit card that often, so was about two billing cycles in before I had a balance on my account.

There was a payment reversal and Discover sent an email about this to my old email address because it takes 24-48 hours for their system to send notices and I had updated my old email address during that time. However, after I updated my email address, I received an immediate confirmation that all future emails from Discover will be sent to my new email -- this was a LIE. Discover disagrees that is their error. I updated to the same banking information for auto pay for my other accounts associated with other banks and none of them resulted in a payment reversal.

Might want to think about banking somewhere else. Apparently Discover does not support fraudulent charges and will not help consumers with such issues. They are not even smart enough to suggest that if a charge is suspected to be fraudulent that maybe they should at least issue a new debit card. It's funny because Chase has no problem supporting their customers.

Avoid. Avoid. Avoid. Please, avoid Discover for any business. I have had a credit and bank account with them for over a month and have not received any card. Customer service is an absolute joke and the managers are even worse! I have no access to my money from either Discover account and was cussed at by a "manager" for asking if anything could be expedited. I was told no, that FedEx will not ship cards; all they can do is cancel the FOUR cards (2 credit 2 checking) and send them again. It would be here in 7-10 business days. The customer service is filled with barking dogs, kids screaming, and the most rude, petty, and unempathetic people I have ever had to work with. Cancelled and closed it all. Good Riddance!!

Stay Away from Discover Bank and never use their services. They are a fraud. They refused to take payment for my credit card not once, but twice, taking my account to delinquency and reporting that to credit bureaus. Tory, a supervisor did not even share her last name telling me for security reasons she couldn't do that. The customer service is petty and I would not recommend anyone dealing with this bank. My credit score has been affected dramatically as my auto pay bank was changed, I tried to update my auto pay, it wouldn't go through, I made online payment, it wouldn't let me, I called on May 6th, the agent said she couldn't take payment over the phone either, because Discover wanted me to wait to be past due and have another charge waiting for my bank to refuse the auto pay, her own words. This is ridiculous. What a shame.

My mother passed away and Discover Bank has made closing her accounts and getting her money transferred to her estate a nightmare. We submitted the documents they asked for, but they keep asking for more, or changes in what was sent. It has been months with no cooperation. Did not have these issues with any of the other banks and credit union accounts she had. Even selling her condo was easier than dealing with these people.

A few years ago Discover Bank made a decision to suspend customers' ability to use Zelle. They then claimed to have reinstated Zelle but I have not been able to use Zelle through Discover while having access through all other financial institutions I use. Discover has been the bank I use for my direct deposit. I lost my debit card and attempted to transfer funds via Zelle to another account so I could have access to cash and to purchase vital items, like food. Lo and Behold, no Zelle is available. Not only that their customer service reps don't seem to know or acknowledge that it was Discover NOT Zelle that created this issue. The rep kept saying that Zelle has "secret" criteria, even when I stated I use Zelle with other banks. I then say, hey I need to move $$ because you don't have physical branches, and he suggests I do an ACH transfer which takes 2 to 4 days, in 2024 I am supposed to wait 2 to 4 days for $$.

The direct deposit does not clear in account at a certain time, and now Discover is clearing withdrawals prior to deposits. There is nothing easy about this account. Even with the higher APY, Discover is simply a hassle to have. I don't know when I will have access to my $$ or have the ability to purchase food. Definitely was not a wise choice on my behalf to have my check be deposited with them. They are a good backup account but not a main one.

I have a single late payment on my Discover card that I have had for years due to me being in the hospital, they won't help me remove this and now my score has dropped and can't get my house, if I wasn't relying on my cards to hold up my score I would close this out. BAD COMPANY
