What is Discover Bank?

Discover Bank is the online bank division of Discover Financial Services. It offers savings accounts, checking accounts, CDs and money market accounts, as well as retirement accounts, personal and home loans, and credit cards. Discover does not offer special student or senior bank accounts, though the $0 account minimum and $0 account maintenance fee make it a good choice for students over the age of 18 and older adults.

Discover Bank is an FDIC-insured institution, meaning that deposits are insured up to $250,000 per customer. As an online bank, Discover does not have any physical branches for customers to visit, but its customer service is available 24/7, 365 days via phone.

How does Discover Bank work?

Discover Bank is available to all U.S. residents who are at least 18 years old. Opening a savings or checking account is simple, especially since you do not need to have a minimum opening deposit. To open an account, you will need to provide your personal information, such as your name, address, Social Security number and date of birth. If additional documents are needed, you can upload them securely on the site.

Once you have an online account, you can link it to other financial accounts to enable direct money transfers. Additionally, you can set up direct deposit for your paycheck, and when using this feature for your checking account, you can receive your check up to two days early.

Discover offers the latest banking technology for customers, including digital wallets that allow you to connect your bank account to Google Pay, Samsung Pay or Apple Pay. The Discover app can sync to your wearable device so you can check your balance and account activity with just a tap.

Additionally, with the Discover mobile app, you can manage your money and freeze your debit card instantly if you lose your card.

As a member of Discover card for over 20 year, their quality has really gone downhill. I usually have no problem disputing with discover, (last time I dispute with them was 7 year ago), this year I got scam by a furniture vendor where I received furniture that did not look the same from their website AKA false advertising and several defects on all my other furniture, after trying to contact to vendor for 4 month, vendor ignored all my text and phone call,

I disputed with discover with all the proof I have and they kept making excuses and Kept asking me to provide proof vendor agreed to refund if I’m not satisfied with the product (in which I did have it in my text), but they kept jerking me around for more detailed proof such as they want to see vendor agree to refund amount to this particular credit card, you can tell discover no longer side with their customer, as a result, I withdraw all my money out from discover and will no longer bank with them, just so you know if you have fidelity account, they offer much higher interest rate than discover (4.9%, where as discover is only 4.15%). Bye discover, you won’t miss me and I won’t be missing you either.

I have multiple on line savings accounts/CD's as well as IRA's. I find Discover's interest rates very competitive. I have linked my Discover accounts with my credit union and can easliy switch money back and forth. CD's renewals are a breeze. The few times I have conatcted customer support they have been very helpful. I am surprosed to see so many megative reviews.

This is the worst bank I've ever dealt with. They constantly threaten their customers without any legitimate reason, sending negative reports to credit bureaus. The staff is not only rude but also highly incompetent, showing a complete lack of understanding of their own processes. Every interaction with them feels frustrating and unprofessional. They seem to have no regard for customer service, making it clear that they do not prioritize the needs or concerns of their clients. I would strongly advise anyone to avoid banking with them.

I was looking for a good debit card to use for online purchases only. I ordered the card and BEFORE I got the card, I received 3 emails (different days) about putting money on the card, which was a red flag for me. When the card finally arrived, I received 1 more email about adding money (2 days after it came) and then 5 days later, another email about they were cancelling the card because I haven't added money yet. A lot of red flags for me and after reading these reviews, I'm glad I didn't.

Discover reported my late payment of less than $10 due to an auto pay error to the credit agencies and won't remove it, damaging my credit score. There are other banking institutions that are more flexible on this. Discover says they won't remove a credit reporting unless it's an error from Discover (a LIE). I updated my banking information for Discover's auto pay. But I don't use Discover credit card that often, so was about two billing cycles in before I had a balance on my account.

There was a payment reversal and Discover sent an email about this to my old email address because it takes 24-48 hours for their system to send notices and I had updated my old email address during that time. However, after I updated my email address, I received an immediate confirmation that all future emails from Discover will be sent to my new email -- this was a LIE. Discover disagrees that is their error. I updated to the same banking information for auto pay for my other accounts associated with other banks and none of them resulted in a payment reversal.

Might want to think about banking somewhere else. Apparently Discover does not support fraudulent charges and will not help consumers with such issues. They are not even smart enough to suggest that if a charge is suspected to be fraudulent that maybe they should at least issue a new debit card. It's funny because Chase has no problem supporting their customers.

Avoid. Avoid. Avoid. Please, avoid Discover for any business. I have had a credit and bank account with them for over a month and have not received any card. Customer service is an absolute joke and the managers are even worse! I have no access to my money from either Discover account and was cussed at by a "manager" for asking if anything could be expedited. I was told no, that FedEx will not ship cards; all they can do is cancel the FOUR cards (2 credit 2 checking) and send them again. It would be here in 7-10 business days. The customer service is filled with barking dogs, kids screaming, and the most rude, petty, and unempathetic people I have ever had to work with. Cancelled and closed it all. Good Riddance!!

Stay Away from Discover Bank and never use their services. They are a fraud. They refused to take payment for my credit card not once, but twice, taking my account to delinquency and reporting that to credit bureaus. Tory, a supervisor did not even share her last name telling me for security reasons she couldn't do that. The customer service is petty and I would not recommend anyone dealing with this bank. My credit score has been affected dramatically as my auto pay bank was changed, I tried to update my auto pay, it wouldn't go through, I made online payment, it wouldn't let me, I called on May 6th, the agent said she couldn't take payment over the phone either, because Discover wanted me to wait to be past due and have another charge waiting for my bank to refuse the auto pay, her own words. This is ridiculous. What a shame.

My mother passed away and Discover Bank has made closing her accounts and getting her money transferred to her estate a nightmare. We submitted the documents they asked for, but they keep asking for more, or changes in what was sent. It has been months with no cooperation. Did not have these issues with any of the other banks and credit union accounts she had. Even selling her condo was easier than dealing with these people.
