What is Credit Karma Money?

Credit Karma, which is best known for its free credit monitoring services, started Credit Karma Money in 2019 as a way to simplify savings and offer a higher annual percentage yield (APY) than traditional banks. While Credit Karma Money is not a bank, it has partnered with MVB Bank to offer banking products.

It offers fee-free savings and checking accounts, as well as a credit-builder loan. It also offers helpful money management resources, such as retirement and budget calculators and financial advice articles.

How does Credit Karma Money work?

To open a checking or savings account with Credit Karma Money, you will first need a Credit Karma account. This account is free and can also be used for credit score monitoring if you choose.

From here, you can open up a Spend account (checking) or Save account (savings) or both. You will need to verify your mailing address, phone number and Social Security number to open either account.

Credit Karma Money products

You won’t find a wide range of banking products with Credit Karma Money, but it does offer three free accounts for savings, checking and credit building.

Savings account
Credit Karma Money Save offers a free savings account with a competitive APY of 3.75% as of publication. This is made possible through its network of 800-plus partner banks. Not only is there no minimum balance required to open or maintain the account, but there are also no hidden fees to worry about.

With Credit Karma Money's savings account, your balance is eligible for up to $5 million of insurance with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC).

Checking account
Credit Karma Money Spend is a no-fee checking account that allows you to deposit and withdraw money, pay bills and make purchases with a debit card. There are no monthly maintenance fees or minimum balance requirements, and you can get paid up to two days early when you set up direct deposit with your paycheck.
Credit-builder loan
The Credit Karma Credit Builder plan is a quick and easy way to build or improve your credit score. You can apply for the loan through the Credit Karma app or website and receive an instant decision without a hard pull to your credit.

Your monthly payments are reported to the three major credit bureaus, potentially helping you establish a positive credit history.

The funds for the loan are held in a savings account while you make payments, and once you hit $500, the funds are released to you.

Credit Karma Money fees

Credit Karma Money doesn’t charge fees for its savings account, checking account or credit-builder loan. However, there are fees that are charged by its third-party providers:

  • 1% foreign transaction fee charged by Visa
  • ATM fees for out-of-network provider

I have had Credit Karma since 2022. I have never had an issue with this business, thank god. Reading these reviews have me concerned now. I noticed that as of 4/30/2026 a lot of businesses aren't honoring my card. So I now must possibly find an alternate bank to conduct business with. I am not saying you should not bank with Credit Karma because like I said, I have never had a problem, but businesses may not honor this card as a real bank.

They froze my account and then locked it after making transactions all day for "security purposes." Not only that, but they disabled my virtual card and locked the new one; again for "security purposes." I spent over 1 hour and a half speaking with them OTP, verified my identity multiple times, and still no resolution. I'm unable to access any of my money after only 2 days of having the account. Customer service says that there's nothing that I can do except wait 7-14 days for a new physical card. I'm extremely upset with this company. The fact that they have no backup plan for situations like this is what's making this even more messed up.

They flagged a transaction for a service I get but when you reach out to them you are put on hold 45+ minutes to talk to somebody. This is the second time I am trying to get somebody to assist me to unfreeze the account. This never happened before, forcing you to pay or get a credit karma debit THRU turboTax. What a joke. I am writing a review on here and then on the BBB website. It seems that there has been a lot of complaints regarding Credit Karma. Should have reviewed before opening a spend account for my 2025 tax filing. I completed my 2025 taxes approximately two days ago and decided to try the Credit Karma Spend option due to how it offered a loan advancement from my tax refund for 2025. Big mistake. The account was opened successfully and I was approved for a $250 loan advancement which was deposited that same day within a very short time. At the same time, I updated my email address and my contact phone number and verified this information successfully not knowing that this would cause an issue, or that is what Credit Karma is stating.

I went to add a virtual card to Google Wallet until my physical debit card is received so I would have immediate access to my available funds, that was the whole purpose of choosing Credit Karma, it looked like it had been added successfully, but when I went to check my Google Wallet, my card information wasn't showing. I then tried to move or transfer funds to an existing outside bank account/debit card but kept receiving an error message stating that the transfer was unable to be completed due to a technical issue. I then contacted Credit Karma by chat and by phone, which this had to be done three times before I was even informed what the issue may be. So incompetent.

I was then informed that my new account was locked due to me changing/updating some information and that the change of information still needs to be updated in the system before I can access, transfer, or even update bank information. The associate I spoke with didn't even know how long this process would take. Now I have no access to my current funds that are available and the rest of my refund is scheduled to be deposited into my Credit Karma Spend by the first week of March, will I have access to these additional funds by then is now my concern, if not, those funds will be in my account without be able to use them. This is completely uncalled for. Do not use Credit Karma Spend. It is useless.

It seems to always hold your money for however long and you can't access it because of your security which is bs. I had to download the app to a different phone and did 'forgot password' so that is the change that made my account not accessible. And they can't do anything about it because it's a system issue. Then someone needs to fix the damn system

Horrible checking account services. There is never a accurate date of when your check will be available. They lie and say that government checks are 5 business days early however they do not do this. They release it when they feel like it and all they do is say contact your payroll department even when you tell them you have and your check was sent days ago. This has been a ongoing issue with them. Constantly blaming your payroll and taking no responsibility for their jobs.

I got my VA check Nov 22nd 2025, 5 business days early and today Nov 21 is 5 business days early with holiday and they don't give you answers. Instead they just irritate you. I have never been so upset at a bank that can't freaking give you your money on time or even know a day of when you will get it. Never use them. Poor customer service and horrible banking experience. Thank you for wasting my time and energy on the phone. We will take our business to a bank that has their stuff together. Will be reporting to Better Business Bureau as well as having my attorney involved since they think they can hold people money until they feel like releasing it..i will also make sure to spread the word around not to use them.

Told me to find another retailer. Use cash or I could transfer my money out of the account for a small fee. Screenshots of our conversation are attached. I send money 2x a month to put into what they call a savings builder so that when you have saved $500 they unlock your asking so you can use the money. Unfortunately, the balance that is reflected by them is a $300 difference not to mention that $50 a month is disappearing since when I send that it does not show up anywhere. So that’s another $400. When I call customer service they say they can’t see any money in my account! I asked to speak with someone in management as they have no information and they say there is only them to talk to.

They sent me a link to show copy of my bank statement reflecting the deposits from my bank to the save builder and they say they don’t have copies of my statements. When I put in a dispute a couple of weeks later they send me an email saying it has been handled and it is closed when I never talked to anybody. This is a scam and I will be reporting them but need to know who to report them to and how do I get my money back. Any suggestions?

I was coerced to get a Credit Karma Money account while filing my taxes through turbotax, because it's the only way you can get your refund without paying an extra charge. I begrudgingly set up the account and received my refund, only to find out I can't access my money. I cannot set up a linked bank account to withdraw my funds because of a "technical error", and customer support is deflecting and avoiding my questions. It's been over a week now, and I am not sure how to proceed. I guess faking technical issues and holding on to people's refunds for weeks on end is a great way to increase cashflow.

I did get my direct deposit 3 days early but they do not honor the 20.00 overdrafts like they advertise and I wasn’t able to deposit cash to the account ever. I would go to every available merchant that they advertised me could make my deposits and it would fail every time on different days and time and places - I was waiting in lines at Walmart - I was holding up the lines in CVS and Walgreens while they would keep trying to help me but each time failed but Credit Karma would blame the retailer saying nothing was wrong on my account- so they all do it wrong - drive to another city.

Also you can’t get them to help with a dispute- You are supposed to monitor it yourself- until they take it off a hold they do the dispute on the website but that never happens and when you call in they will not help while the hold is on it - even when it moves from pending item to approved transaction they keep a hold on so you can’t get your money back and file the dispute- Again they blame the customer for calling in and do nothing. You will not get the most basic banking services with Credit Karma.

Stay away! Do not recommend. Would give negative stars if possible. They froze all three of my accounts with them and never sent any notification. I only noticed when charges began to decline. When I called, they could give me no information and had to transfer me to another "specialist". The specialist asked for verification including a copy of the front and back of my driver's license and a selfie to confirm they were talking to the account holder. After giving them what they asked for, they still couldn't tell me why the accounts were frozen or give me any balance information.

I also could no longer see any information on the app including balance or account history, everything appeared blank. They told me that they had to refer me to a "higher department" that only communicates with customers via email and to keep a check on my email account. Two days later the "higher department" sent a one line email that my account "was now unlocked. thank you". I checked and still couldn't see any activity history. Within an hour of my account being unlocked they had closed all three of my accounts (Spend, Save and Credit Builder). And again no written communication or prior notice.

I called customer service again and they could not give me any reason for the account lock or closure. Now my accounts are closed and my credit will suffer due to the closure of the Credit builder. I've never used these accounts irresponsibly but they said that when I signed up I agreed that they could close any account at anytime without warning. I would NEVER recommend anyone bank here. THE WORST banking experience that I've ever had in my lifetime.
