THEY HAVE THE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER! The call center is out of Country, barely speaks English, they read from a script & keep repeating. They hang up on you, & they put you on hold for a VERY long time for the simplest questions. They do not care about Customers & they will not give you the $400 Promo, its a scam.

I believe they are the worst bank in America. Do not ever bank with them. They are horrible. They charge you so many extra fees and anytime you need to talk to them they just send you to the Philippines to their call center. You can never talk to someone that you really need to talk to you and if you do you have to wait for like an hour or more so I would really advise you not to bank with them. They're horrible.

Worst communication with the bank. I had a credit card which was replaced due to fraud. Got new card but cannot use until they verify personally. Since no branch in NJ they told me to send your credential notarized and call within 24 hours. Since I have been calling but never get right agent after holding the phone long time. Some time get international agent who has no clue.

My experience with BMO has been mixed, and my low rating reflects two specific problem areas: commercial lending and online banking. The commercial lending team is the biggest disappointment. After the note is signed, communication essentially stops. Emails and calls go unanswered, and it becomes nearly impossible to resolve even simple questions or issues. This lack of follow-through creates unnecessary delays and frustration, especially for business clients who rely on timely responses.
BMO’s online banking system is another major drawback. It’s outdated, slow, and poorly designed—easily one of the worst online platforms I’ve used. Basic tasks take far longer than they should, and the overall experience falls far below industry standards. To be fair, the local branch staff has always been professional and helpful, and my rating is not a reflection of their work. The issues lie specifically with the commercial lending department and the online banking system, both of which need serious improvement.

If I could give zero stars, I would. BMO is the WORST bank EVER!! Literally have been a loyal customer for over a year. Get my direct deposit in this account, my husband does too. I deposited a settlement check and was told that a percentage would be held and a percentage would be available the next day. Well next day comes and NONE OF MY MONEY is available. Come to find out there’s a mysterious hold from “back office” for fraud. I offered to give them my settlement paperwork and there’s supposedly nothing that can be done. It goes without saying that when the money clears we’re leaving them. I work in customer service and would NEVER treat my customers the way we’ve been treated. I hope someone reads this before they think about banking with BMO because if I knew what I know now I would have never banked with them.

I recently opened a new BMO account, and I’m honestly furious with how my first experience has gone. After depositing my very first check through the BMO mobile app, I was shocked to find out it will take 7 business days to process — yes, seven! I even called customer service hoping there was a way to speed things up, but got absolutely nowhere.
How is anyone supposed to pay their bills or manage everyday expenses with such a ridiculous wait time for a simple mobile deposit? This is 2025 — every other major bank processes checks within a day or two at most. I opened this account expecting convenience, but instead I’m stuck waiting over a week just to access my own money. If this is how BMO treats new customers, I’m seriously regretting making the switch. Definitely not the kind of “modern banking experience” they advertise.

I and my husband were at BMO (Tsawwassen branch) for opening account. We had pleasant, knowledgeable, skillful, very patient with elderly people and efficient in every steps mutually funds representatives by name Jennie **. Her professional attitude and empathy toward her clients made us feel welcomed and be confident that everything is on right way. Thank you so much for having so talented proficient competent employee!

HORRIBLE! Wish I could give 0 stars. Have to resolve certain questions through branch office and impossible to reach them. Always routed off-shore. Awesome to try to answer security questions from someone I can barely hear or understand. Hours on the phone only to be disconnected and provided inconsistent information. I was told I HAD to close my account due to fraud concerns but could open a replacement account via phone. Then was told that my husband had to be on the phone too. He drove home hours to participate and we spent hours verifying information and were told the account would be active (e.g. to reinstate auto bill payments) 48 hours after our receipt of confirmation emails. Emails never came.
More hours on the phone only to be told that we need to drive the 3 hours to the nearest branch to open a new account and that the different departments can't be expected to know or track what's been shared or promised by other departments. Still on hold while I'm typing. I will drive the 3 hours and will gift cheap champagne so they can celebrate my move to a different bank.

I chose BMO in 2021 for my small business banking because their rates were the better ones available to me at that time; however, you get what you pay for... I have had nothing but issues trying to login to my online debit and credit card accounts. I feel like 99% of the time, I've had issues signing in. It's sooooo frustrating. I cancelled my credit card today and will be cancelling my debit account in the near future. I do not recommend this company at all.

Deeply Disappointed by BMO’s Discriminatory Practices. I recently opened an account with BMO and almost immediately regretted it. Not even 24 hours had passed before my account was flagged, locked, and I was effectively labeled a scammer — for no reason other than, it seems, my ** last name. For the record, I was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
When I called to speak with a supervisor for an explanation, I was met with vague responses and obvious discomfort. He couldn’t give me a clear reason, and instead began stumbling over his words. At that point, I made the decision to walk away. I told him to keep the account locked — I no longer wanted to do business with a company that demonstrates such blatant bias and disrespect.
The experience was degrading and humiliating. It’s deeply troubling that in 2025, a major financial institution would rather jump to conclusions based on someone’s name or ethnicity than treat them with basic fairness and dignity. BMO, you need to do better. I read concerning reviews before signing up and hoped they weren’t true. Unfortunately, what I experienced was worse than what others had warned about. No wonder your parking lot is empty. Good day.

Do not use! BMO has repeatedly shut down my accounts, both checking and credit card, for ridiculous trumped up fraud alerts. I cannot purchase anything on-line without the credit card being stopped. Companies who I have been doing business with for years are denied the e-checks I tried to pay them with. Wiring money is out of the question. BMO essentially steals your money and keeps it for their own use, while denying access to the customer. At all times I had more than adequate funds to cover expenditures. BMO offers no explanations. The fraud dept employees are arrogant and rude. I will be closing all my accounts, and hiring an attorney to get my money.

BMO has caused me enormous stress and financial harm. I deposited a legitimate insurance check into my new BMO account after a home robbery. I attempted to withdrawal $1,000, and suddenly my card was frozen. I immediately called and verified my identity. The next day, I went to the El Cerrito branch to withdraw $8,500 and was treated with suspicion and hostility. Despite showing ID and documentation, my account was escalated to a fraud investigation, and they froze my entire account—over $14,000. I was told I may not access my money for 30 to 90 days. There was no fraud, no wrongdoing, and no transparency. I believe this was discriminatory, especially as a formerly incarcerated person of color.
This incident left me financially stranded. I am a UC Berkeley student, a father, and a community advocate working to rebuild my life. BMO’s actions were retraumatizing and reckless. I filed a discrimination complaint (Case #: **), but BMO has yet to release my funds or offer a valid justification. If you value your financial safety, stay far away from BMO. This bank has a pattern of freezing accounts and treating customers like criminals. Check the reviews—they speak for themselves.

I had been a customer of Bank of the West for many years. I have their credit card. BMO bank bought them out and decided to cancel my credit card. They did not inform me of this, and I found it out when my card was rejected at the gas station. Good thing I had another form of payment, or I would have been in trouble! When I called BMO they informed me my card was cancelled "as a business decision" and it had nothing to do with late payments etc. I have never had a late payment. Then I was informed they were keeping my earned rewards. This bank is shady and I would never do business with them.

DO NOT USE BMO Bank. I have a credit score of over 800 and never made a late payment. I have had this credit card for more than 15 years (previously Bank of the West.) BMO closed my credit account with no notification and no explanation. They have a clause in their account agreements that says they can do this whenever they want and by using them, we agree to it. When I called the credit department for an explanation, two different agents told me that they mailed an explanation letter on two different days. I went into a branch, and they also could not give me an explanation. I still have not received any letter of explanation from them and nothing in the APP or online shows that my account is closed. At Bank of the West my interest rate was 9.9%. When BMO took over my account two years ago, they raised my interest rate to 14.99% overnight with no explanation. This is by far the worst customer service I have ever seen.

BMO bank gave me a $12,000 credit line. Before my first payment was due, after only using the new card for less than 10 days they cancelled my account, without any notice. When I tried to pay $8 for a dry cleaning bill - it was declined. I called and spoke with a supervisor - they wouldn't even tell me why they cancelled me. I paid $500 10 days before my first payment was due - over 10 times the minimum payment due. If I could give them a 0.000001 start review I would. They have A+ TV commercials - don't believe them. Stay far away, for your own good.

I had to give it a one star review because that's the only way to get passed that portion of the review, but I would've gave it a negative five-star review. I recently received a settlement for a horrible injury at my job and got a money market account at BMO Harris Bank in Kokomo, Indiana. The teller, Nathan **, who assisted me said it would be better for the large sum I received. I just wanted a savings account. What he neglected to tell me was that they only allow you to move your own money size times a month, afterwards you receive a fifteen-dollar transaction limit fee each time. I was charged forty-five times, maybe more because I couldn't check my account history online that far back.
I contacted BMO solution/resolution center, which delegated everything to the branch I frequent and was told by the same man who convinced me to get this money market account, Nathan **, he definitely would've told me about these fees and isn't going to refund me anything. It took three days and countless hours trying to resolve this issue and I am sure I lost over twelve hundred dollars dealing with this atrocious company. Please do not make the same mistake. I have told everyone I work with and know not to deal with BMO after this and I hope this gets to anyone thinking of banking with them.

I like to start by saying I would like to give this bank and absolute zero or a minus 100. The experience I have had with this bank has been the absolute worst experience I have ever had with any Bank from being racially profiled because I have money in my bank and having my bank account froze because of that to going online to try to send payments only to have my bank account Frozen again and again because I don't know how old my friends kids are, why would BMO Bank ask me about my friend's children.
I am no pedophile and have no business knowing anything about my friend's children but because I can't answer questions about the birthdate of my friend's children or where they live BMO freezes my account and I have to go through a process of having myself identified over and over and over again for the exact same thing no matter what I say that's exactly what the problem is they are asking questions about my friend's children, not my own horrible experience. Horrible experience. Horrible experience.

I have two CD accounts with BMO; I am trying to sign into my account for 3 weeks now, and they block me out although I do everything correctly. Called customer service and they can not help; HM!!! I am trying to make sure at maturity they close the account and return the money to the original bank. The way to do it, says customer service, I have to request they send me an application, I fill it out then she runs it by her supervisor and maybe I can change my password. So you have to run through loops to change a password and have access to your money!!!! VERY TROUBLESOME. STAY AWAY FROM BMO, JUST MY TWO CENTS.

Beware of BMO – they take your money without asking! Who in the world do they think they are? It is our money not BMO's!!! A recap of what took place: Bank of the West converted to BMO. During the scrub of monthly withdrawals to occur on September 1st, BMO noticed our state tax amount did not meet the required minimum. Bank of The West was withholding $62.47 a month for years, however BMO indicated $167.64 was the amount required to be withheld. Ultimately, BMO withheld the $167.64 amount without asking us and we did not get our IRA distribution payment on time. They just took our money and held it for several days. After much research and phone calls it was determined that Colorado does not have an 8% requirement for state withholding. They reversed the tax withholding of $167.64 and instead will be withholding the usual amount of $62.47. BMO screwed up and we paid the price. Needless to say we have since left BMO and would never, ever recommend them for banking needs.

I have had this card for more than 20 years. There is always a live person to answer the phone if I have problems. They will call me to check if it looks like there is fraudulent activity. They are very good about helping me on the rare times that I have to contest a charge. If I don't call them first to tell them I will be charging something expensive, or I will be using the card out of state, they call me to check before accepting such charges. Their security is extremely vigilant. If the card doesn't work for some reason such as at a gas station, there is always a live person I can call who will fix the problem. They do have a rewards program, and I can redeem points for a prepaid card I can spend on anything I want. If the card is lost or compromised they are very good about giving me a new card at no charge. From talking to friends and family, I know this company is far above most credit card companies in customer service. I highly recommend them.
