I was a student at Kaplan from June 2007-July 2009. I was dismissed for failing classes. I explained earlier on to my adviser Orande ** that I was having some personal issues that were affecting my school work and I thought it would be best for me to withdraw. Well after he made me feel bad for wanting to drop out of school, I continued. I tried to reach him again and let him know that it wasn't working out and I was assigned to another adviser, whom I can't remember the name because I think I got one email from the person. Ultimately, I was dismissed and started receiving letter about a past due amount which I didn't know anything about until I tried to get a copy of my transcripts.
Well I needed my transcripts, so I set up a payment plan via my bank account. I was informed last Wednesday that I have not made a payment since Jan 2010. I explained to the person on the phone that the last payment was drafted out of my account on March 13, 2010 and he said I must be mistaken and that I need to call my counselor to get it taken care of. I told him he needed to call someone because I have proof of payment. Yesterday, I received a call from a collection agency representing Kaplan about the same past due amount and I received an email from Kaplan warning about the same account.
I am not employed right now and the $50 per month is hardship, but I agreed to pay the money to Kaplan until it was paid off. These phone calls and emails are getting to be stressful. They are calling daily (they won't answer when I pick up). I am keeping up my end of the bargain but they are harassing me for $400.00. I am enrolled at another school and when they contacted Kaplan, they say they have no record of me attending there.

My financial aid is maxed out. Everytime I turn around, the price per credit hour goes up. Now they want me to pay 191.00 a month to cover the tuition that isn't covered by the financial aid. You can never get to talk to anyone in that department, your always on hold, no one seems to know what is going on, unless you owe them money then they will call and email you non stop. I would withdraw if I could find another college locally that has a paralegal program.

I signed up for school. There’s death in family as well as house fire and I called the school to let know why I hadn't signed in. Instructors told me to withdraw and they would back me. The school didn't drop me and took $3500. They are now calling me all the time stating I owe them a $100 fee. I called accounting and the lady there said I was charged a fee and she would correct it. They never did. It's been five months and they are still calling. They should have dropped me as I requested by email to three different staff members and I even told them that I felt used and they took money for no education. They took money for nothing and they harass me with these calls.

I was working as a paralegal in a small law firm back in 2003. I didn't want to attend class so I started looking for a school where I could attend online. I came across Kaplan University and contacted them. I was asking questions about if I decided to attend their school would my credit transfer to a local college here in the state of North Carolina. The operator (name forgotten) assured me that I could use my credit at any college in the US. I was glad so I could actually graduate at a school of my choice. I received a Pell grant of approximately $950 and the rest in student loans.
I kept having computer problems off and one with this school. I tried to maintain with them for about a year. I later found out after a year wasted with this bogus place that my credits weren't accepted by the college I was trying to transfer to and not only that they stuck me with over $6,000 worth of student loans. This is not fair. They misrepresented themselves as a school to me and to the public. Someone needs to stop these people of mistreating people and sticking them with plenty of student loans. I am doing all I can to dispute these fees. Last week, I got a letter from the school that I owe them $1,083 and I would like to know what it's for. I will contact every person I need to, including the local news, if necessary.

I was enrolled in Kaplan for a short while and withdrew when it began to interfere with work and family. I withdrew from Kaplan in November 2009 and canceled all remaining loans that were scheduled to be paid in January 2010. I spoke with a financial advisor named Kathryn ** who told me and emailed me the totals remaining after the semester time I did use was paid. This remaining total was well over $3,000.
When I mentioned to her that I wanted to withdraw, she said that I will have a balance owed to Kaplan. My question to her was if this is true, why she is telling me that I have a remaining balance that I can return to the bank. She said she would get back to me.
It's February 2010, and I have been receiving calls daily from Kaplan that are very strange. They would call my home more than once, and once I pick up and say hello, no one would respond and the line would be disconnected. When I try to talk to someone concerning a balance of $2,512.12, they can't seem to explain, and I'm put on hold for more than 30 minutes and then the line is disconnected. If I happen to talk with someone, I'm told that the debt would be sent to collections, if I do not pay.

I was so excited when I first checked out the course material for Kaplan. I contacted them by chat and did receive an immediate response. Too bad they carry on 4 and 5 chats at the same time so you have to wait 5 minutes between every question. Within two days they had me signed up and I sent my $70 in for the enrollment fee and received my acceptance call and student login. This was all after they assured me that my financial aid would cover a full time semester and all I had to pay out of pocket was $274 per month.
It was by mistake, really, that I discovered the complaints filed my masses of people who have been duped by the school. I was looking up Kaplan and my browser showed me all the sites where complaints have been filed. I immediately un-enrolled and requested my money back. After all the attention they gave me to sign up, suddenly no one is available to take to. So I went back to the chat to my "admissions advisor.” He kept assuring me that the refund was requested and each time I called back I would get a different story about when to expect it. While some said it would take 2 to 4 weeks to receive, others said it was a month or more. Now come on, with the technology we have these days, no refund should take more than a few days and at the most 10 days! But I still haven't seen it and it has been 3 weeks.
I am still receiving the daily emails from the school that they were activating my financial aid. But what really had me angry was the email saying that since I didn't log into my financial aid account to activate it, they would just help me along by doing it for me. Then I discovered that the $274 per month that they said was all I had to pay suddenly jumped to $380. How convenient for them! I did panic at that and did a correction on my FAFSA to eliminate their school from the possibilities.
My advice is to read and be aware of everything you can about a school before you sign up. This I have learned from the Kaplan experience. Don't be fooled by the rush tactics. Completely reputable schools do not force you to sign on the dotted line before 5:30 PM the same day that you request information. They want you to succeed and they want to be sure you will be the right fit for their school. Beware of Kaplan!

I have been a student at Kaplan online for over a year now. During my first term at Kaplan, my financial aid officer Joel C. did not turn my paperwork into the proper people, meaning my student federal aid authorities. I actually got a letter from Bank of America telling me my student loans had been cancelled. I never cancelled anything. My financial aid officer Joel C. at Kaplan cancelled my federal aid for my education. This has caused me great grief with the school.
The school is telling me I owe them money from my first term. Now, they have me blocked out of my classes and they are getting money from Direct loans for this term and they have me blocked out of my classes. The term is half over and I have yet been able to enter my classes because the school says I owe for my first term. I am a financial aid student and they know this. Due to the negligence of my financial aid officer, I'm being punished and not able to access my classroom. I am getting collection calls from the school and them telling me I owe over 6 thousand dollars. I owe them nothing.
Like I said, I am a federal financial aid student and my financial aid officer cancelled my federal aid without my knowledge. Now, I am unable to get into my classes and the school is getting money for this term while I am not able to participate in the classes. They are basically stealing from me and the government and getting the money for the classes I am unable to attend. Something needs to be done as soon as possible. My academic advisor, the ombudsman department, the financial aid department and others are stringing me along and not doing anything to solve my problem. I have been trying to get this issue resolved for a month now and still no resolution to the issue.
Nothing should take a month to be resolved. My theory on this is that no one is doing anything to resolve the issue. I get passed off from one person to another with no results. I am seriously frustrated and need some help with this issue. I have no where else to turn to and need you to please help me resolve my problem with this school and its employees.

I attended school, which was a joke, was talked into a class. I am a CNA, and the course they talked me into was Rehab Tech. By the time I finished this course, I was nothing more than a glorified CNA. This was in 1998, I went on SS in 2002, was injured on the job, so strictly living on SS.
I put in for deferments, then had to go to a hardship case. I never heard from them until today 2010, and they want their money. I don't know what to do. I have contacted Social Security about this and according to the laws they cannot touch my Social Security, but they insist they can. I have been sent to a collections agency. I am up a tree, and so sad the country has come to put judgments on the elderly.

Kaplan University is a scam. The course material is completely inadequate. I enrolled in the Medical Assisting Program on November 19, 2009. By December it became clear to me that I was learning nothing. Upon enrollment, all the ridiculous charges were explained to me. As I was about to tell them “no way”, suddenly my adviser began to tell me my aid had been approved and how lucky I was to be fully covered. She then told me that we had to get my paper work in immediately as, - surprise, surprise- today was the deadline and we only had until 5pm EST (about 50 minutes) to do so.
Having mistaken, being fooled by the rush tactic, forms began to show up in my email and she quickly told me where and what to click on. Being a trusting person (and obviously, an idiot!), I felt sure that "I was fully covered" as the adviser had repeated several times. I began classes. As mentioned, by December I began to realize there was no challenge to the coursework and many of my classmates were earning the same 4.0 average as myself while seemingly being incapable of forming a lucid sentence. The red flag went up. I checked my balance in my account - $0. Ahhhh.
I called to withdraw. My phone calls were not being returned. I sent emails, also unreturned. I checked my balance again a few days later and BAM! It was suddenly $3880. Yet I had only taken two classes (yet unfinished) and was told those classes were paid in full. I began to remind the school of my various connections, as no one was calling me back, and the original sales person who suckered me in immediately emailed me with an extremely unprofessional letter, void of all punctuation, ranting about how I was throwing her under the bus. What? This coming from an "accredited" facility. This issue is still unresolved and will probably haunt me for months or even years to come.
I am a foster parent taking in teenage girls and trying to better our lives by building my education - Kaplan is a money pit and clearly takes advantage of its students. Most local colleges offer classes online or ground for approximately $26 per unit - go to your local college. Do not get suckered in by Kaplan University. I want to take this all the way! I would love an attorney to contact me. I have already written to my Governor and am contacting the Inspector General and the Board of Education tomorrow. Kaplan must reverse the ridiculous charges and zero my account of any and all balances or I will make it my life's work to see to it that no one else is taken advantage of by Kaplan.

In 2005, I received an email from this college and went in for the interview. I was told that after the particular class that I was taking, I would leave class making $25 per hour to start. Later on, I realized that you start at $7 per hour. The teacher that I had would sleep through class, and we always had open book tests. I feel like I was misled to go to college and they are just trying to get money.
They changed their name, and I am thinking that this has something to do with it. I have found over 50 people that had the same experience that I had at this very same college. I reported them to the Better Business Bureau, but that did not lead anywhere. I took going to college very seriously and feel like I was lied to the entire time. I now owe $7000 in college loans and have a degree that I feel does not mean anything.

I enrolled at Kaplan University online in April of 2009. After having one admissions advisor go missing in action, I was later assigned another one, who finally started the process. He informed me of the necessary paperwork, which I completed and returned, including all financial aid forms. The trouble began when the monthly payment jumped $30 more than what I was prepared to pay. I told the financial officer upon enrollment that, for me, $150 would be stretching my limits. My first bill was $183.90. As a college student with a part-time job whose FAFSA didn't come through, this added financial strain as well as emotional strain on me.
Several months later, I received an email stating that the lender was still waiting on information from me. I called the lender, who stated that they had everything, they were just waiting on confirmation from Kaplan. Kaplan claimed to have sent the confirmation several times before when I had called to check, yet here we were, several months later. We later received a Master Promissory Note in the mail for a loan to be taken out in my father's name. I did not wish to do so, but according to the school, it was required or I would have to pay out of pocket.
We filled out the form, sent back all additional information they asked for, and yet again I received an email claiming they are still waiting for information. I called the lender who stated, "That doesn't make sense; we're just waiting on confirmation from Kaplan." I returned my Financial Aid Officer's email regarding this issue, relaying to her what the lender told me, and received a message back. It stated, "I don't know what happened, but it's being paid out now." Come a month later, I received an email from their "Intake Team", telling me that my Parent plus Loans had been denied due to additional information not being provided.
I seriously doubt this matter is going to be resolved in my favor. If the true purpose of the loan denial was for lack of additional information, I want to know where the requests for that information are. I would also like to know how they expect to keep students when their financial aid is more of a scam than anything else.
On top of poor financial aid customer assistance, Kaplan's "different school of thought" lacks quality education and challenging course work. I'm enrolled in the Interdisciplinary Studies - Educational Paraprofessional program, and have been for a year. At this point, I have had one class that required more than my mere presence to earn a decent grade. At so much per credit hour for ridiculous classes, I feel my time is being wasted at this school. I would like to transfer out, but depending upon how the loan situation gets cleared up, I may not be able to continue with my degree.

Kaplan is trying to say I owe $1222 out of pocket, but I do not. Three weeks ago when this all started, they said I owed $343. Two days after that, I owed $574. A couple of days after that, it was $1207. Then I had a credit of $90. Now I owe $1222. Who knows what my balance will be on Monday? Then I received an email from my student loan lender that the Stafford loan I requested, for $2000, was approved. I never applied, but at least that would cover my balance of $1222 I was told I owe for school. I sent an email to the Financial Aid department at Kaplan stating I did not apply for this, but since I was approved, I will use that towards my balance and that after this term, I would not be returning to the school. Well, now they canceled the disbursrment of the Stafford loan and I have no idea what is next. I still have not heard anything from Kaplan.

Kaplan College is nothing but a waste of money. The school promises so much but at what cost? I attended the school and completed the program. It would have been great if I actually learned something. I was doing the Pharmacy Program. I had a teacher that had such a bad accent, it was hard to understand that man. When students would go to the head of the school and complain about the situation, the school head would say, "We'll get to that." ... Okay, "When?!"
They're very unorganized. They hired teachers that don't have one clue on what they were teaching. For example, on my last month to finish and go to externship, which is the most important month, they fired the Teacher for pharmacy and ended up replacing it with a teacher who taught Respiratory. What does that have to do with Pharmacy? I honestly wish I could go back and take everything I put in that school but that's not the worst part of it. The school is nothing on what it promises on TV ad and nothing like they say will be at the end.
Oh but that's not all. They say they would teach you what you needed to learn to pass the Pharmacy Tech. Certification. We had to buy our own book for that test, because the school wouldn't provide it for us. Many students took the test and 1 of 10 would pass, the test cost $130. If you passed, you will get reimbursed from the school itself. If you failed, you don't get your money back. I believe we shouldn't have to buy or pay for that test or the book. They should provide that for us. Someone should take a deeper look into that school and talk to the students themselves. There would be many that will have something to say.

I was really enjoying doing my online classes at Kaplan U until my computer crashed. On May 11, 2009, I asked for and received via email a form for an expenses loan so that I could get a new computer. Ha! After waiting for a couple of weeks, I contacted my financial aid adviser to find the status of this loan. I had to leave messages and received no response from her. In late June or early July, I finally talked to a different adviser that stated that she saw my form but it hadn't been submitted yet. She supposedly submitted it at that time. The end of July and my term came, and still no response. Yet I was being harassed to sign up for new classes. So I contacted the manager of financial aid, a Lizeth(?), via phone as my computer was gone! Her message clearly stated that she would respond as soon as possible, but to get faster service, to email her. It is now 10/07/09 and I have yet to hear from her!
I no longer attend Kaplan, but I've received more correspondence from them since leaving than I ever did as a student. They keep harassing me for more money, even though I withdrew in July! Apparently, they've overcharged me and they're supposed to return those funds to VSAC, an organization here in Vermont that gets the loans for students and pays the colleges themselves. I'm attending another school, and I'm afraid that Kaplan's actions may impact on my ability to continue my education.
I've threatened to contact an attorney (which I really can't afford) and then I'll get calls on my machine all day long from Kaplan. But when I redial those same numbers, I get the biggest runaround ever! I'm so frustrated with Kaplan and feel that it's a huge ripoff in the name of education! I'm now concerned about how valid the credits that I 'earned' there really are! I do not recommend Kaplan University to anyone at this time! It seems like a good way to get an education, but it's a business for profit unlike traditional colleges which do seem to focus a little bit more on providing a good education for less profit!

I was done with my studies in November of 2008. I graduated in February of 2009. According to the graduation requirements, no student can graduate with an outstanding debt owed to the school. Even if the student makes arrangements, their credentials will be withheld. I received my BS in Criminal Justice and nothing was withheld. On September 18, 2009, I noticed on my credit report a collection account from Kaplan for $1015. I called Kaplan to ask about this as I had no idea that I owed money since I was able to graduate.
There is a negative report on my credit and I was never notified of a debt. I am paying back student loans and Kaplan is adding on to that debt. On top of the $1015, Kaplan is asking that I pay back money that was sent back from my Pell grant that was given to me. I have graduated and the school that I attended successfully (I thought) is making it hard for me to continue. Not only that I am a single parent who receives no government assistance, but I am also working to pay back student loans and care for my family.

Due to an error on the university's financial aid department, it caused a large outstanding balance on my account before I finished school on December 23, 2008. Numerous times, I have been told that it was their fault. I have an eye witness to this. On January 30, 2009, Cody ** explained that it was their error and I have emails corresponding back and forth with him. Therefore, when I graduated on January 31, 2009, my degree and transcripts were held and will be held until that balance is paid off. I have worked months trying to get the matter resolved with no success. Speaking to numerous people in their department until they decided to discard half of the balance. That is still not good enough because I still cannot afford that. Once again, they were incompetent in the job they are paid to do yet they are trying to penalize me for that incompetency.
Now, I am being harassed by this department and stressed to the max which is not good for either of my illnesses - both that can be triggered to high levels of stress. I have explained that I am disabled over and over, that I am on a fixed income and should not be asked to pay such a large amount and have my transcripts held when I was not at fault - the institution was.
The attitudes and condescending tones over the past few weeks have been unprofessional. I feel like I am being given the runaround and taken advantage of - that they are trying to bully or intimidate me into paying them! All I want is to finish school and get my degree but Kaplan is causing a road block for me at my new school because of holding my degree and transcripts. I have worked hard to obtain that degree at Kaplan, graduating on the Alpha Beta Kappa National and Golden Key International Honour society!
I have been on the Dean's List and honor roll multiple times. I spent majority of my school year sick and I still made it! So, to have this done to me is more than insulting and degrading! The purpose of me going to an online college was not to have to deal with this kind of stress. I want it resolved. They have taken up too much of my life and I cannot take anymore! I've had enough!

I started taking classes with Kaplan University in 1/2008. I had signed up for a degree plan for an AA in Information Technology. I was informed that I needed to take 2 classes per quarter to qualify for financial aid. I agreed to this plan and classes began. I had been charged an entry fee, then later was told I need to pay an additional amount; again I sent the amount. Then, I had received a call in 8/2008 about owing money and not taking enough credits. I had contacted my financial advisor via e-mail and he responded with "everything had been taken care of." I would receive phone calls from the school and when I had answered them, they sent me to an automated system and a voice mail. Occasionally I would get phone calls saying I owed; then I would e-mail my Kaplan Financial Advisor and would receive e-mails stating everything was taken care of.
Now, I have been disabled from logging in and was told I have to apply for a secondary loan at a 15% interest rate to cover what should have been included in my degree plan. I have filed a complaint with the school and finally have been able to speak to someone that said they understood but other than that, if I do not give them money out of pocket, I cannot finish my degree. If I do not comply with them I will not be able to receive my degree. I am to finish at the end of this year. The student loans that I already owe for will come due earlier than expected and I will have to re-register for my degree plan and hope that Kaplan will transfer my grades from prior classes.

I am currently gainfully employed full-time making a decent salary with benefits and have a Bachelor's degree from an accredited state university. I curiously explored the option of several online education services thinking I might possibly further my existing education and 15 years of experience with additional certification. I contacted Kaplan along with a few other firms. I received a call today from a Kaplan representative stating they had been trying to reach me for some time. In reality, I believe they left one phone message and today's call just happened to be the second attempt they had made.
The female representative began to explain to me Kaplan's offerings. I had expressed interest in Medical Office Management courses. This representative had a very rude attitude. When trying to inform her of my interests and what type of program I felt would best serve my learning habits and schedules, she interrupted me more than once. I finally said that I was not interested in speaking with Kaplan any further if this was the type of heavy-handed tactic they used with potential students. The representative then said I was clearly not Kaplan material. You think? I just laughed and hung up.
After doing further research on complaints against Kaplan, it is evident they have issues. I read more and more financial horror stories. With such poor solicitation representatives, I can only imagine how they treat you once you actually sign on the dotted line. As previously mentioned, I have a Bachelor's degree from an accredited state university and more than enough experience to know that Kaplan would not be the route the go. Beware!

Kaplan said that FIN AID chose me to audit my 2007 taxes so that is why I needed to fill one out. If I'm not using FIN AID in 2008 why would I be audited?) When I complained to the OIG and my Voc Rehab counselor called they changed their statement and told him I was in the arrears on tuition by about 12K.
This is impossible because VA sends the money each term electronically. After some arguing the block was removed but I lost a week of school. I was on the Dean's list up until I was four classes from graduating and then they start failing me - can't graduate with F's so they can force you to stay in and pay for more classes if you want that degree which isn't good in a lot of places. The classes don't transfer over to a lot of schools no matter the accreditation. They purposely do not respond to you as this is one of their many ploys to keep your money or make you pay more money. I've sent complaints to my Senator, Attorney General's office, OIG, and of course various forums on the net.
My complaint was recently picked up and investigated by the Dept. of Ed Financial Aid. The response from Kaplan is a joke especially considering they outright lie stating I never complained about the discrimination and I was never blocked, etc. I have various emails from them regarding the blocked account and why - the complaints to the Dean of Legal Studies himself and also the Chair of Legal Studies. The Dept. of Ed stated that the Accreditation commission is needs to be made aware as does the state dept of Ed. So, I'm forwarding all of my information to these two depts. I'd be interested in a class action. Kaplan is extorting and fraudulently scamming monies not just from private individuals but from the Federal Government and banks. They need to be stopped.

I registered for online classes on 8/2008. Was confirmed that I will start classes 9/2008, FAFSA was accepted and all my documents. I called in October 2/008 to find out when will financial aid be paid. They would tell me soon, I called again in Nov. 2008 was told the same. All the way till Jan. 2009. When I was send a letter through email stating I now owe $6,800.00 no one at Kaplan is returning any of my calls. My GPA is 3.96. I’m attending classes but now am getting discouraged due to the fact that no one is letting me know where my acct stands.
I called FAFSA. They stated I have a loan package since 8/2008 that has never been applied. I cannot to afford to pay such outrageous bill. If I did not qualify in any means why wasn’t I told in 8/2008 when I spoke with financial aid Jackie **. She stated she was swarmed with other calls and emails and sorry she got to me so late in JANUARY. Please help. Who can I contact to get this situation fixed. I am stressed because I want to pursue my degree but at what cost. If I was aware in the beginning I had to pay I would’ve of never enrolled. I have 3 small children and I am not working. This feels like a great big scam. Please help. Thank you.

When I began my experience with Kaplan I was also told that I would owe nothing. I was told that between Pell grants, financial aid and a student loan I would owe nothing until at least October. This was in April, I attended Kaplan from April-July, only taking two classes. I was billed $615.00 for May and June. I unfortunately did pay for May but then decided that Kaplan was not the school for me and withdrew before the next term began. I have received harassing phone calls at work, on my cell phone, several emails and bills in the mail that tell you absolutely nothing but that you owe money. They do not respond to emails and give you the run around if you speak with them.
I have requested on numerous occasions to have a break down of exactly what is owed and why, but I might as well be asking for the winning lotto numbers. If you are experiencing the same idiotic treatment that I have I would highly suggest taking your complaint to the Inspector General. That is what I am doing because I WILL NOT pay them money that I do not owe and have completely lost my patience. How can a college emphasize how great their education is when they staff so many uneducated people?
I am trying to pursue my education at a different college, but do to the fact that Kaplan is stating I owe them money I can not get my transcripts nor will they work with me until I have cleared the financial debt through Kaplan University Online.

I am a single mother of two. I recieved seversl emails from Kaplan stating that i could further my education and attend college classes online. I immediatley called and started the registration procees bc i wanted to further my education. Currently unemployed, and with two children i can barely afford the essentials. I made that very clear to a fellow by the name of Christopher S who assured me that I would have everything taken care of and would have no balance left on my account after a loan from citibank and the fafsa and pell.
I asked several times to make sure if everything was covered, he stated that i was being handled very well and that he would help me in anything i needed. Two semesters in i get a bill for about 3000.00 dollars and change. I immediately call and speak to my suposed academic advisor who tells me christopher sarpy no longer works there and that she would get someone to help me in financial aide.
To make a long story short i was fooled fromt eh beginning. I was talked into getting another loan unsubsidized after my parent was denied for a parent plus loan and then i was ignored for 3 weeks until it was too late and they withdrew me from classes i was told not to log in to by my academic advisor. Rules state that 21 days of inactivity and you will be withdrawn. My advisor told me not to worry her name is Yasmine Wroy and she also said she would get me into class late with a note for my teachers. I am so angry not only at the kaplan system but at the staff.
Because of their repeated failure to help me my loans will now be charged and i have no means of paying. I also have to pay 10% of the classes i did not take. This is uncalled for i did not do anything to deserve this type of treatment. I have gotten hung up on, tranfered and dropped, given the run around and not called back for over a month. I am tired of this treatment i am a human being and i have responsibilities that come before this situation. Please help a desperate mother with no where to turn.
