This school let the instructors treat me badly. One instructors rolled her eyes at me all the time and would not answer any of my questions. It took the other students telling me that it was a distraction in class and that I should complain. I did and things only got worst for me from there. I had one instructor tell the class that I could not wait to go to the bathroom because I was old. And then another instructor yelled at me in front of the class when all I was doing was laughing at a joke like everyone else was. She told me that my reputation precedes me. When all the complaints that I made to the ED was not handled I wrote the home office about it. And they came back to ask me to quit school in my 4th quarter, and they would give me all my credits and money back. This is accelerated program, you can't just go somewhere else and finish. I had to kiss ** until I got out because I was scared they would kick me out. I put up with the abuse throughout the end of school, which was through the 5th quarter. The school even wrote me up for things that I never did, trying to get me kicked out. But, I persevered, and finished and will never go to that school again. I ask for a copy of my transcript and was refused.
I feel that something needs to be done about how this school has treated us. I am going to write to the Washington Post about them, in case you did not know, The Washington Post owns Kaplan. Please everyone go online and find the address to write to the Washington Post. Thank you for having this site to help student warn other student before they go there. Also the school tried to keep some of my Sallie Mae money and I had to make them go through every bit of money they received to prove to them that they owed me the money. I got my money but, they put me through ** to get it.

I was a student since 2009. I had a lot of issues with Kaplan. I was lied to many times about the schools accreditation. A lot of us take what we're told for face value and now owe more than our house. I spent all these years getting an education to find out the degree is worthless. I became the paralegal club president this last year and I took the club from nothing and no active membership to the top number one active club in the university. I also was a peer mentor from which I helped student graduate. Now with that being said do you think Kaplan gave a crap about me and what I accomplished for their school - nope. They exhausted all of my funding, 65K in debt, no bachelor's and unable to go back to college to complete the last 5 classes to get my bachelor's! I'm going to file a class action lawsuit and all I have to say to Kaplan is shame on them for preying on low income families and making our debt worse without any help in site.

I have never had any problems out of Kaplan University, Online. I have an Associate's Degree in Paralegal Studies. I am now in my first semester of my Bachelor's. I have never had a problem with contacting my academic advisor or the financial aid department. After reading all of the bad reviews, I am terrified and nervous that I have wasted my time and that my degree will be of no use here in the state of Georgia. Is there anybody out there with a degree from Kaplan that lives in the state of Georgia. Please reach out to me. I am to the point to where I do not even want to continue on with my Bachelor's, because I am now afraid that I have wasted my time, won't be able to find a job, and will be in debt forever because my degree will be of no use. I refuse to start all the way over from the beginning. Overall I have not had a bad experience with Kaplan, but I need some answers and quick!!!

I attended Kaplan and at graduation, I was told I had been nominated for the Golden Key International Honor Society. The Dean himself told me and directed me to speaker with a rep from Golden Key and what the nomination meant. He told me I had to buy the cord to wear in the ceremony which I did. After graduation, I called the faculty member in charge of the Honor Society and she told me I had not been nominated. Since I had earlier experienced a previous foul-up with my grant papers being processed and told I was $10,000 in arrests, I knew that foul-ups happened at Kaplan. Now I do know if I qualified or didn't.

Kaplan is the worse school ever. I swear I should have listen to my best friend who she kept telling me don't do Kaplan at all. They delay your money and they want to be slick with too. They put my Pell grant and one of my loan in a ready to pay status and then put the other one for next week. I talk to the department of education and they told me it's not on them to request when the funds to be drop into the school account. It's not the school and yes yes yes they are very slow and they had me almost four weeks in verification process over one paper and something good they had me resubmitted that they had no darn clue of what they was doing.
I had a tax preparer do my papers and they still was saying that the amended tax return I had to turn in was wrong. They even told her she was wrong, hahaha!!! But they say, "We not tax professional, we just add the numbers up." It was so much to where the tax professional was like just put what they want on there even though it's not right at all. And she was like," I'm not even going to get into that no more." I had to play professional did my paperwork for me and they both got frustrated with what they was asking for and saying resubmit it.
I hate this school. After this semester I'm out of there, I swear, cuz they are totally full of **. The instructor call me Allison and I told her in an email my name not Allison my name Alicia and she email me back saying "Oh sorry I have so many students," and then my other instructor told me I never email her after I know I email her a few times and gone tell me that only time I contact her on such and such date and I never email her. I told her, "How you gone tell me what I did and when I did it when I now see a person like me would curse all of them out because of their lies and fraud and getting over on people." I recommend this school to no one and then when talk about my refund they gone me the day it can come or the estimate day quote unquote as they say that's almost the time I will be finish the two classes. These people are full of it. I mean for real they are.

I was enrolled in the Kaplan Master of Healthcare Administration program from 2009 to 2011. I took a Stafford (subsidized & unsubsidized) loan for the classes. In 2011, I had to un-enroll from the program for medical reasons. Once I got myself back on my feet, I requested information from Kaplan to re-enroll in the program. After several attempts to contact the school via emails and phone calls, someone finally got back to me only to be told that my student account had a hold on it. Although I have been making payments to Nelnet on a monthly basis since 2012 to pay off my student loans, Kaplan decided to turn the "charges" on my last two classes after I dropped out in 2011 to a collection agency. All along, I never got any phone calls, emails, or letters in the mail.
Kaplan claims that they were sending all communication to my old mailing address. When I asked Kaplan why they chose to NOT take the student loan for the last two classes, I was told that it's their policy. I'm not sure why there is such a policy, and why such policies are not communicated to the students beforehand. To make a long story short, I have worked out a deal with the collection agency (First Source) for 12 monthly payments. In the meantime, I'm trying to complete the last few classes I have left to finish my Masters. Kaplan will not let me re-enroll until after I've paid off First Source (keep in mind that I haven't missed a single payment with First Source). Also, Kaplan won't send any of my official transcripts out to any other schools. I've dealt with the Financial aid administrators and a few other "head" people at Kaplan.
To say they are all complete jerks is an understatement. PLEASE do not waste your money or future at Kaplan. It took me a few years to see their true colors. There is a trend in the consumer complaints stacking up against them. Consumers - BEWARE!

Before receiving a statement just the other day, my balance was about $500 for the month. Now this was after my monthly payments were increased by $200 without anyone telling me. Now, I received a statement saying my current balance is nearly $2,000, all within one month. Nobody had ever made me aware of a price increase and this has been happening since May of this year. Tell me Kaplan, where did the $1500 increase come from in under a month? You increase your prices without contacting any students about it, and frankly I'm sick of this. I can't even recall the amount of people I've told about the terrible experience I've had with them.

Kaplan robs you of your financial aid. They charge 200.00 lab fees for a class that doesn't even consist of a lab. Then, they take your financial aid stipend and hold onto it for an extra 60 days therefore charging you more interest for money that you never had. They tell you the funds will be applied on a certain date and then don't apply them for another 60 days after that, when the course is already OVER! It is supposed to be money to get you through the course for educational supplies. You don't get it. So any student waiting and waiting, JUST STOP WAITING. Because it's not coming. Kaplan is being sued by thousands of students for fraud. Don't attend Kaplan. Don't.

I was recently denied for a second Master's degree at Kaplan University at the Omaha, NE location. A Kaplan staff member said that I needed to be approved for that degree and in order for that approval I needed to write a letter to state why I should be approved for a second Master's degree. After I did all that, they wanted a job resume; which I also supplied for them. Once both of those were turned in, they came back and said that I could not do a second degree there. The Kaplan advisor said that the money that would be spent on my tuition assistance could go towards another student that had a better career path in front of them. I have been going to school for five years, have a cumulative GPA of 3.97. I took 2 classes every semester for my Master's when everyone else took one class. I am the kind of student that makes schools look good!

I took a class that was a requirement for my degree. Needless to say, once getting into the class, this professor and I bumped heads from day one until the course ended. She pinned plagiarism on me, and said that I had cheated on a paper. I took the class over again and passed it with an A. But what I cannot stand is the fact that the negative charges on a student's record never go away. Therefore, I have mentioned to Kaplan that they need to come up with a way to delete the negative charges from a student's record, because they are saying that any negative charges can follow a person to their employment. I do not believe that the staff at Kaplan University should hinder someone in a job with charges from them.

Not to mention I have encountered several errors where systems are down and they will not let you talk to a supervisor or manager without approval.

I live in Georgia and know that it only takes a day first-class mail to reach someone located in the same state it was mailed from. I contacted Kaplan and they were rude and have hung up on me several times. One representative named Daniel even stated that it's not their problem. This school is horrible and people should stay clear, they do not care about their students.

Kaplan University gives 5 credits per course and charges as such, meaning $371 per credit = $1855 per course. They also have hidden fees like $200 per course for technology purposes, which adds up to $2055 per course. When I tried to transfer the credits to a different college, the other college only gave me 3 1/3 credits per course. Would I have started out with the other college, I would get a much better deal, because they also charge $371 per credit, so my total would be $1243. They also do not have hidden fees like Kaplan does. $2055 - $1243 = $812. I overpaid at Kaplan University $812 per course.

I paid for the study guides and software to take the FINRA Series 28 Exam. Studied and got to where I passed the Kaplan study materials with flying colors. Particular areas that were repeatedly part of the exam are not even in the book. What a waste of money and a waste of time studying their material.

I first attended Kaplan and received my AA degree in Criminal Justice. I thought great school! Then I decided to apply my AA to accelerated BS. MISTAKE! The instructors and the ebooks were awful! Talk about instructors - I could have done a much better job. The joy was gone, disappointment came, and I was sorry I went back. I stayed but eventually had to get chemo and was sick quite often. The response was, if I couldn't perform, I would have to leave the school! Finally I had to withdraw. Now they say I owe them $983 - after they paid themselves with my loans and grant. WTH? Got the notification via email! Now I can't even get an answer as to why I owe, HORRIBLE!!!

I am currently attending Kaplan University online but I am having second thoughts about attending for another term. I am only working a part time job so I was kind of expected to receive a decent amount back from my financial aide and loans. After they had received the loans and grants, I was left with $650. At another school I attended, I received way more than that. Apparently, Kaplan is very expensive even after all that I have received. It is a good school however it does have some things that I do not like about it. I would recommend this school to others only if they can deal with the school being expensive.

When I first spoke with the Admission's advisor, she seemed somewhat in a hurry to get me enrolled in my classes. She called my home at least 3 times a day. I did all the paperwork to get in. So all I needed was to get into my classes 2 @ a time. However once I viewed the financial award letter, all of the numbers were the same and added up to the net amount of my loans which meant to me I wasn't getting jack back. Plus she did not put the right amount of my Pell grant in which shorted me 3,000.00 dollars. So I basically told them I don't get down with thieves and I reported them to the Dept of Education today. This school is about taking every penny of your loans and leaving you with a bill. But I nipped the liars in the butt last night. Since then I have no past, present or future classes. They are very dishonest and they better count their blessing that I have not hired an attorney for their kind.

I enrolled with Kaplan University Online in August of 2014. Kaplan was very quick about enrolling me and getting me set up for an August 27th start date. Shortly after following their instructions on enrollment I was notified that I had been successfully enrolled. I was very excited until I got a call from one of their class advisers, whom informed me that I was not in the RN to BSN degree program that I needed to be enrolled in. Even though I was in the wrong degree program she insisted that I should stay in that program. After explaining to her that this degree program was not the same as the RN to BSN program, she finally agreed to have someone call me back and straighten the issue out. She also informed me that my former enrollment officer would also contact me.
This was over a week ago and no one has contacted me despite my numerous calls and emails. This also happened right after I signed a form requesting that tuition funding not be held by Kaplan University, but dispersed to me after tuition was paid in full in the beginning of the semester. Why would this university need to hold onto the money for "possible future expenses" as their form stated? After reading multiple other reviews, and seeing that this University has had past lawsuits, I am glad that I did not let them take advantage of me any more before it was too late. Unfortunately, thanks to this university, I have now missed the deadlines for enrolling in any other school by the August deadline. I would advise that anyone looking to enroll in an online college think twice before enrolling in Kaplan.

Professors discriminate the LGBT community, Financial Dept. errors:
My spouse and I attend Kaplan for Legal Studies. My spouse asked a legal question that relates to same-sex marriages to one of our professors. The professors then made statements that the LGBT is the main cause for AIDS and does not agree that same-sex couples should have rights.
The financial aid department has 14-days to issue stipend checks to students. Kaplan was 21 days late. Kaplan finally UPS the check to me after I had made numerous phones call, with no clear answers. I received the check and deposited to my personal joint accounts. My bank, Wells Fargo, emailed me indicating the check was voided. Wells Fargo then proceeded to remove several hundred dollars and charge me $12, returned check fee. It took me a week to find out what was going on. During this whole time, Kaplan and Wells Fargo never contacted me of this issue.

software you may need. They do not take into consideration that you, as a student, are relying on these additional funds to cover your school expenses like computer, supplies, books, internet, transportation, etc.
This is wrong and I, as a student, was extremely disappointed have to experienced this. I am in school because I need an education and a career that will provide me with financial stability. If I am able to get financial aide and pell grants it's obviously because I don't have a lot of funds to spare. I find myself pawning my computer to get funds to help me pay for it since I am still waiting for funds from a previous semester. I stress about it and lose focus on my classes. It's hard having to pass classes under so much pressure. No Consideration, whatsoever! So please, please, please think carefully before you choose a school and check reviews online. I wish I would have done so before I chose Kaplan University. I honestly do not recommend them at all especially if you are not working and are going to be relying on the additional funds from loan and pell grants!

There is an online form to complete but you should be prepared to provide documentation of correspondence and/or phone calls--days, times, who you talked to, what was said.... We had an issue a few years ago with the way they didn't apply financial aid until halfway through the second quarter and then wanted 3 "easy" payments of $697 each to settle up???? Had to pay it to get transcripts released, along with $60 for several rush transcripts never received. Kaplan returned the money after the Attorney General contacted them. Hope this helps.

I am a 12-year-old student who currently attends IS98 (Bay Academy). I am also a victim of verbal abuse and harassment by one of the Kaplan teachers that was contracted by my school, Once I was taking an SHSAT test and a girl in the class asked me whether she could go use the restroom and I said, "I don't know...maybe you should ask our teacher?" This conversation was overheard by my teacher. He came over and tapped me on the rib cage and said that I should come meet him outside. I have complied.
As soon as I came outside, my teacher started to use the F words repeatedly to explain to me the proper behavior while taking a test. After he was finished with the lecture, he told me to never reveal this conversation to my parents or anyone else for that matter. At the moment, I feel very scared and frustrated. I don't know whether I can trust any teachers at my school. My mom has already contacted my school (Bay Academy) as well as Kaplan itself. Everyone keeps telling my mom that they are investigating, when in reality nothing is getting done to rectify the situation. Moreover, judging by written and verbal responses, school administration as well as Kaplan are doing their absolute best to "sweep the matter under the carpet". If I were you, I would not attend any school that hires Kaplan teachers. That's just my 2 cents.....

My wife and I separated for a year in 2005 (approx) and during that time, she was dating another guy and going to Kaplan University. My wife dropped out in 2006 (approx) due to us getting back together and joining the work force. We both were working third shift at Walmart and we preceded to do our taxes at the end of the year. We got a letter from the Attorney Generals Office saying my wife owed Kaplan College for various charges but she was not attending college at the time that Kaplan university said she was. I had to file an injured spouse form to collect my portion of the taxes.
We did some more digging and found out that supposedly, she was enrolled in child Psychology and other classes after she dropped out a year or so earlier, while she was working at Walmart. There was loans taking out to cover these courses that she was not attending. Kaplan said that she was enrolled and told her the grades she had achieved. We explained that she did not attend college at these times and that there is some kind of fraud going on. They said she had to prove she was not taking these classes. We believe her ex-boyfriend and his new girlfriend had used her information to collect the loans or Kaplan fabricated the whole thing to collect money from the government.
In 2012, my wife went back to college and earned her associates degree from Briarcliffe College. In 2014, she went on to try to get her bachelor's but now she cannot finish because she can not get any more loans. This is due the loans taken out during the time she was working. How can you prove that you were not the one in college and taken the courses that they said she did? I know it seems far fetched but it absolutely true.
This is the craziest thing I have ever encountered. I know she was not attending college because I was working right along with her. We were working ten hour shifts at night and it was exhausting enough just doing that, and there is no way she was in college. We do not even know how to resolve this situation. This has devastated my wife's future for her bachelor's degree. They are a rip off as far as I am concerned. Why did they not call and talk to my wife or how did they let someone else use her information to attend college with out verifying it first? I know they had her information from before when she dropped out, but still, where did the $6000 dollars or more go from the stipends? I want to be able to go back and verify where the money was spent then we could prove the address where we lived. We are at a total loss on how to handle this situation.

Kaplan undoubtedly has some of the be facilitators/instructors; however, their financial department has undergone some serious, undesirable changes. When I first enrolled, the academic adviser and financial aid adviser were both on point, courteous and consistent. As of this date (in fact, for the past 3 months or so), there have been more problems accessing on-line classes/seminars, consistently contacting any advisers, that includes academic or financial and getting any CONSISTENT anything. For starters, I have not had a communication with my academic adviser for months now (about two months after enrolling). I have emailed him and phoned him with no luck. Often I am stuck speaking with someone else, albeit very friendly, I have to review all of my information and then get to the point that I called about. Waste of time and frustrating.
As far as finances? That seems to be the worst. I had excellent luck when I began school there, signed up, registered for classes, was explained all aspects of finances, asked if I needed clarification, etc. Refunds were issued on time, within the required 14 day time frame, but now: I was offered the portfolio class, which I am glad I took, however, the cost was never fully disclosed and it wound up costing more than twice what I was told and in the end there remained a balance that appeared all of a sudden, which took my refund clearly off the books and even then they requested an additional $265.00 that they called me about weekly. Now, following that, they have had surplus funds for me on the past two terms and I have had to call them repeatedly for my refund and each time it is later.
I was promised after the last incident that there was a changeover in their "system" and things would get back to normal. However, at this time, they accepted two loans on my behalf (when there was zero balance due) simply because I earned more credits due to portfolio and that qualified me for more loans. This money has been sitting on the books since May 16th. I called them immediately and informed them that they should not be in receipt of this money. This was not authorized and it needs to go back and I was informed that it could not go back but they were processing it to be refunded to me (in May).
At this date, 6/18/14, they are still in receipt of nearly $1,000 loans that does not belong to them, a $500 scholarship that should have been refunded to me and loans are posting for the current classes that I am taking at this point. I, too, am a 4.0 student and work hard and after at least 4 calls and negative surveys, they still have not processed my money (so that I could repay the loan company) and stated yesterday that yes, the money is supposed to be refunded to me but there is a delay. Again, after 30 days, another delay? How much of a delay, I ask and the answer was that the gentleman had no idea, it was just a delay. Well I informed him that I am looking for another school to finish my degree and this morning I will be writing a letter to the registrar's office.

I was on hold for 30 mins to talk to my advisor to register for classes because this was my first semester and she kept trying to register me for classes that I didn't want to take. We finally got two courses together but then I had to talk to financial aid and that was another 30 min wait, just so they can read my reward letter to me. Mind you that it was emailed to me as well as in my account documents online. The semester starts, I go through the first week and do all the work. Then comes time for the mandatory weekly seminar, a day before the school week ends and the professor is going over everything that I had done already. Not really going over but basically reading word for word from the assigned reading. In my mind, I'm thinking why do I have to sit here and listen to something I read already. So after that, I asked my advisor could I be moved to another class with a seminar at the beginning of the week because having a seminar at the end of the week makes no sense and she said she would check and get back to me.
A few days go by and I hear nothing from her, so I email her and she say she wasn't in the office those days but she looked and all the classes are full so I'm stuck. I continue with the course and the seminar but it seemed like every week, it was some reason why the seminar got cut short; either it was technical difficulties or the professor just plan out saying he didn't feel like doing an hour long seminar that day. I wasn't upset because I really didn't need to listen to the professor read aloud but had it been a class where I was lost and needed help, I would have been pissed. I was going on vacation for a week and wouldn't be able to attend the seminar and I told my professor, he tells me I would have to do the alternate assignment but he doesn't recommend that because the alternate assignment is stupid and has nothing to do with the course.
Through all this, I was waiting for my financial aid stipend check but Kaplan's financial aid office didn't make the process easy. First, they said that my financial aid would be disbursed by April 25 which was normal, seeing that I started school at the beginning of March but April 25 comes around and nothing happens. So I contact financial aid and asks what's happening and they say the dates are just an estimate but the funds should be in by next week. Next week comes around and still nothing, but I see that the disbursement dates has been changed to May 16th. I understand things happen, so I do nothing and plan to wait till the 16th to see what happens.
But during my wait, I'm constantly getting emails saying changes have been made to my fafsa, I check and it's kaplan changing my exempt # back and forth. So I contact financial aid to see why are they changing things on my fafsa and they're swearing up and down that it's not them, so I tell em I get an email every time it's changed and I go on there and check and it says Kaplan has made the changes, then they say, oh, we thought you made a mistake on your fafsa so we changed it but realized it wasn't a mistake and changed it back. I say, well that counts for two of the changes, what about the other three and I couldn't get an answer for that. Since I had them on the phone, I asked when will my funds be disbursed and they say they're not sure because the DOE hasn't and my load place hasn't released my fund because some of my info was incorrect. I say, let me guess, the info that you Kaplan kept changing is delaying my funding. I think they were trying to delay the funding on purpose.
The 16th comes around and no funds were disbursed. I chat with Kaplan again and they say give it a week, I give it a few days and I contact my loan provider and they tells me that Kaplan has had my funds for almost a month. I call Kaplan and they keep on with the lie that my funds wasn't released yet even though I told them my loan provider says other wise. I hang up before I loose my cool and say some unlady like words. The next day I check my account and guess what, has been disbursed my loans. So now I'm waiting on my grants and the disbursement date for those has been changed to May 27th. The 27th comes around and nothing, my pell grant didn't get disbursed till June 5th and my other grant till this day the 10th, has yet to be disbursed. They say I get a stipend check and it could take up till 14 days from the 5th till my check is mailed out. My second semester starts tomorrow and I'm just now getting my first semester financial aid; plus I'm not sure if I'm going to continue at this school because the funny business has started already.
I registered for my second semester classes 3 weeks ago, and then Friday, I get an email from my advisor stating she changed one of my courses. I reply asking why and how did she do that when I checked on my application that I did not want advisors to be able to register me for courses. She say, well, that info is not on file.
As a matter of fact, they say it was a mistake on that paperwork and you have to resubmit it. I done been to school for 4 months and nothing was wrong with the paperwork, but now it is because you made some illegal changes. She say, well, "I was only able to change it because that paperwork wasn't on file". So I look at my schedule and she has enrolled me in that career portfolio course that cost $1500 that I rejected the first semester, plus they locked it to where I can't change it without talking to her. I then receive an email from her stating if I want the course changed or the seminar doesn't fit my schedule to let her know. I email her that same day like 1 min later stating that I really don't want the course but if she thinks it's necessary that I would take it but the seminar is not a good date or time for me. I didn't hear back from her until today which she said that no slots were open for that course at a different time and if I couldn't make the seminars to just do the alternate assignment. What Kind of ** is that? If she would have left my schedule alone, I wouldn't have these problems. I dropped my courses just before I wrote this review, Kaplan will not be getting anymore financial aid money from me.

The last time was my babysitter keep canceling on me just before I had to go into work. They did not even bother working with me so I could finish those last few weeks. They really need to work with their students. So now I can never return to them to finish up my MA and to be honest I don't ever want to go back to them.

I started at Kaplan University about two years ago. I was working towards my bachelors degree in early childhood education. My daughter became seriously ill. So I contacted my advisor about dropping the classes and returning the following term. She instructed me that I would have to fill out a leave of absence. I filled out the form and emailed it back to her (which was the same way I received the form). I received an email yesterday saying that my leave of absence was not accepted because it was not received via fax. And that I was being dropped from the university. You would think that they would be a little more supportive of their students who are facing family emergencies and need time off.
I was a 4.0 student, worked hard at achieving my dream just for them to shove it back in my face. The advisor and staff were not helpful at all. They were not at all understanding of my situation. If I am taking care of a ill child, how do I just run all over town trying to find a fax machine to send in this document? What's the reason why they could not accept it via email the same way the advisor sent it to me? Now I have to start over from scratch and find a new university when I have invested way too much time and money into Kaplan. What's even the chance that my nearly 100 credit hours will transfer to another school? I would not recommend this university to anyone. They are very impersonal and only care about themselves not their students.

Several years ago, I enrolled in Kaplan for the medical assisting course. After 2 classes, my daughter was attacked while home on leave from the military. I called the student services, explained my situation - that I needed to drop the course and suspend my enrolment due to this crisis. I was told by the lady at student services to basically "get over it". I now owe $18,00 for a student loan which I did not use. Most of this is interest.
This is ridiculous! Keep in mind this amount is for 1 COURSE. I was appalled by the lack of disregard for my situation by this university and am angry I was not allowed to be removed from this course without being charged for it. My tax refunds are being garnished and I cannot return to school until this debt is satisfied. Whatever happened to getting what you paid for? Since I am paying these people, I should at least get something. I will NEVER recommend this university to anyone.

The website mislead me to believe there would be practice questions online but there aren't any. When I called to complain not only was the service representative rude (Kevin) but he also confirmed that Kaplan does not offer refunds. I wonder why! Could it be because they know their programs are grossly overpriced and that most students would want a refund? Bingo.

On December 2009 - I search for online classes and Kaplan University was in the list. Next day they start calling my house offering the classes, they rush me to enroll in because they was starting the classes in January and because they was so generous did not want me to miss the opportunity. They provide all the information for a student loan, I was approved for $6,000.00 which they say was not enough to cover the classes I was interest on taking (medical assistant) then offer to set a payment plan for me to cover the rest of the balance, which I agreed. They promise so much and do not deliver, I was suppose to take the classes every Tuesday night and if I was not available at that time the forum will be open for 5 day - well not was not true.
I was working two jobs at that time and was only available to take the classes on Friday night. By that time the forum was close and for the month of January I was never able to take any of the remedy classes because my English is not good enough. I decided not to continue with the classes since they was never available for me. I call the Direct Loan company and request an stop payment form the loan - I explain the person on the phone that I was not taking the classes and need to stop the loan process, she assure me it will be done.
One year later I got a letter from Direct Loan telling me that my loan was ready to be set up for monthly payments, I was surprise to hear that they sent the money to Kaplan University and they keep the $6,000.00. For months I try to get someone in Kaplan to answer why they took the money, and after treat them with a lawyer they decided to return $3,000.00. I end up paying a loan that I never use and the Direct Loan company do not want to hear my reason. Now, after 5 years, I learn that I have ANOTHER loan with the government and they are taking action stopping my tax return funds to cover part to the loan. I never authorize a second loan. I am going to suit Kaplan university. They must have some kind of scan in conjunction with Direct Loan.

They have not been released the remaining funds as of yet and they do not offer DIRECT DEPOSIT. Not to mention that it takes 4 days for me to receive mail from where it is mailed from so it is taking way longer than the federal guidelines for dispersal of remaining title 5 funds.

I have to say after reading a few of these complaints I am feeling so much better that I am not alone. Funny the time frame for all our incidents seem to be the same which is around or after Christmas holiday. I am fortunate I only took 2 classes and was signed up for the next class that started on the 8th of January 2014. I am certain they charged me for that as well. While I was taking my second class with Kaplan it seemed all was well. I would email my counselor midway through my second class since I hadn't heard from her to see if all was well, and my pending class for January was ready to go.
To my astonishment, I get a reply stating that lo and behold my account is blocked. Funny, all was well in early October when someone called to schedule me for my next class. I also received a call from the financial aid department just singing the tune that all is well and the amount of refund I would be receiving in December would be a little over $2000. Then all of a sudden I end up owing $2500 and I am blocked from my class, and I would not have known this if I wasn't being responsible and emailed my so called adviser to see if all was in order. I even reviewed my account to if they needed any documents as far as financial aid even though the new time to renew financial aid is January. I saw nothing in the red but then when I go to check the financial part of my account it is all of a sudden in the red for $2500 because I was anticipating my loan refund, and wonder why I hadn't received it yet.
Yes, I have a Bachelors degree from Ashford University and I wasn't really impressed with them. Looking to further my education I stumbled on Kaplan for my Masters. I am blessed that I was only 2 classes in before they did me like this. I will not be giving them this money. They can call all day and night, send me nasty emails all they want, but the fact of the matter is I do not owe them this money. I took out a loan and I am certain after my bachelors I am $70 plus in debt for. I am not going farther in debt for a school that does not want me to complete my education obviously, but just wants the money. I knew something was wrong when my last data management class did not require a book and the instructor a so-called professor posted assignments would not download correctly. When the whole class was having issues I knew something was wrong. The whole class is not able to complete assignments? Something is truly wrong there. Frankly, I do not recall having books for any of the classes and I only had 2.
This is so sad, whether you are ethnic or Caucasian, we were ripped off. I am fortunate it will go on my credit report, heck I am in debt since I lost my job so it doesn't even matter at this point, but I feel sad that we are all trying to live our dream of higher education and were taken advantage of. Should we start a class action suit?

I went through and got my undergraduate degree from Kaplan and had no complaints, so when I was going to go back for my Masters, I thought I would give Kaplan a try. I ended up dropping within the approved time frame and when it came time to settle my accounts, that's when all the problems started happening. I dropped the class and it took them 3 months to make the adjustments on my account for the discount I got as a returning student and for withdrawing within the approved time period. They attempted to collect the full amount from me and Student Accounts started harassing me regularly.
No matter how many times I explained it and had them review the notes on the account, they did not stop the calls. They told me that they couldn't do anything until Financial Aid updated the account. Someone in Financial Aid messed up submitting the PWD form and it took 4 months for them to get that submitted correctly - btw - with the adjusted amounts, Kaplan will owe me money, but they have already turned me over to collections. Every time I talk to someone I get the same run around... I have one person in Financial Aid who is actually working to help me out, but I am told that their process is not to do anything until it's processed. I am an honor student currently enrolled in Kaplan University’s LLB program. Currently, I have only four classes left to complete before earning my bachelor’s degree in law. In October, 2013, Kaplan's financial aid department informed me that I had hit the maximum amount allowed for federal loans, and informed me that I would have to find an alternative method of financing or my enrollment would terminate.
I applied for the Kaplan Choice Loan and was approved in November 2013. Recently, I noticed that the Kaplan Choice Loan was not applied to my account, and called financial aid to inform them of same. I later received an e-mail, informing me that the Kaplan Choice Loan was no longer being offered as of January 2014. In response, I reminded them that the 2014 date was not applicable, as I had been approved prior to January 2014. Kaplan University's financial aid department responded as follows:
"The Kaplan Choice Loan was a 3 step process including, a student application, a credit check and certification from the school, and acceptance of the loan documents form the student. There are no indications that the loan process was started on your account. We currently cannot submit any new applications as the program has ended. Please seek alternative means to pay for your balance." Huda **.
**'s e-mail states that there were no indications that the loan process was started for my account, yet on the student website, showing all documents with regards to financial statements, shows in no uncertain terms, that my loan had been approved. In addition, I was given a verbal approval from financial aid, via telephone call. Kaplan University made me a promise, on which I reasonably relied. Following through on their promise probably will cost them nothing, incrementally, as opposed to litigation.
You would think that a student, earning summa cum laude on an associate’s degree, who then enrolled for the bachelors program, earning a 4.0 would receive some type of guidance from the staff at Kaplan University, but that is not the case here!! Those working in the financial aid department (those who I have dealt with), are ruthless and callus individuals, providing no guidance, and no human compassion.
Note: the average cost for one class far exceeds the cost for other universities which offer effective legal tools for their students. For example, Kaplan University ended their contract with LexisNexis, the best legal resource, (in my opinion) and replaced it with a skeleton version of West Law, which allows no access to, virtually every item sought. (West Law's message: "You do not have access under your subscription".)
Essentially, Kaplan University offers no support for legal students, not only in the financial department, but in legal educational tools. Tools, such as LexisNexis, are necessary for the proper preparation of students, seeking to enter the legal field. Due to the shortcomings of Kaplan University, in their failure to provide proper legal resource tools, I was compelled to pay for my own LexisNexis subscription. This expense was by far more beneficial than all of my courses combined at Kaplan’s so-called University!!

When I had 29 credits left of my degree I found out that I maxed out the financial aid. I was told I could apply for a Kaplan Choice Loan but was denied because I had too many credits left and the max amount they lend of $15,000 would not cover the remainder of my classes. So, I got a co-signer (which was extremely difficult) and paid my past due balance and the next class. I reapplied for the Kaplan Choice Loan and was denied because I didn't have a past due balance on the account. So, I just finished my course and have a -$1,100 balance on my account and re-applied for the Kaplan Choice Loan.
I sent all the information on Dec. 11 and on the 26th, I got locked out of my classes so called and they said they didn't get the information. Told her they did because I got a response from them with information specific to the info I sent them. Suddenly she found it. Today I get an email denying the loan because I have to show 2 denials for loans AND 2 denials for co-signers. Well, I'm not going to ask someone to co-sign a loan just so they can have a credit report pulled and wreck their credit! They sent the email yesterday and I have until tomorrow to get them the 2 co-signer denials. Oh, and the email included this little gem: "Please Note: The Kaplan Choice Loan will no longer be offered as of 1/1/2014."
Gee, do you think they really want to give out another loan the day before they stop giving out loans? I have been going to school since 2008 and with 23 credits left I am forced to quit because I can't afford the fees. This really sucks. In early 2010, I started at Kaplan University to obtain my bachelors in Political Science. The only reason I strived for a higher education was to help secure me and my kid's future. Everything started out great and I was doing very well with the education I was receiving. I had great feedback from Kaplan and never had an issue with the education they were giving me. However things changed fast when I found out at the beginning of my third year that Kaplan University was no longer offering the Political Science track. I received an email stating that if classes were dropped or if there was any withdrawal from the school, they would no longer be able to provide Political Science to the students.
I thought fine, this will not bother me any because I put a lot of effort into school in the first place. I was usually signed up for class for two to three terms ahead to make things easy. However, I started to run into the problem of Kaplan University canceling classes or changing dates when they would be offered. I started taking classes that they only had available which were some I cared not to take as part of my degree. At this point, I have already completed almost all major and core requirements needed. The ones I did need seemed to be getting pushed back to later dates. I started to get frustrated because I was already signed up for class that I wanted to take and when the term was getting close to start, Kaplan would email me to contact them to change my classes. I asked why Kaplan was doing away with Political Science and I never received answer and things got worse.
I found out that it is possible to max out Federal Student Aid. I also found out that there were a total of 3 classes that I dropped that I was charged for. I dropped these classes because of family issues and yet I was charged. The three classes they charged me/government for would have been enough to cover the rest of my educational expense. I have been fighting Kaplan over this and have gone as far as seeking legal action against the school. I begged and pleaded with Kaplan University over this issue and they seem not to care that I have 129 credit hours out of the 180 needed and that I just needed a few more terms and my capstone to complete my education.
This has put me in a catch-22 situation because if I transfer schools, I have to complete so many credit hours with the new school and no guarantee that all my credits with Kaplan will transfer. I also now only have what is left of my Pell Grant to pay for schooling. I would advise everyone to stay away from Kaplan University. I have attended Kaplan College and Kaplan University for almost 5 years now and it shouldn't have been this difficult to complete my degree. I ran out of student funding and was required to pay for my fees and costs myself. I was unable to obtain financing and when I tried to work with the school they sent me on a wild goose chase.
After complying with all their requests and jumping through their hoops, their requirements changed with every person you would talk to and in the end I had to borrow the funds from my parents to pay for my classes. Before my balance was even due I would receive a preponderance of harassing phone calls and threats of what would happen if I did not pay. I have paid them over $60K collectively to date. I am now receiving tuition reimbursement from my place of employment and the school is unwilling to work with me in delaying a payment by 15 days to get funds from my employer to pay the school. I have to submit my grades, then they will issue payment. They have already threatened to block me from my classes next term and cut me off, even though I have already paid them thousands of dollars.
I am now in my 3rd to last class and in week one and and already I have started to receive the phone calls and threats for non-payment and my account balance is at ZERO until the end of the term! I would transfer schools immediately; however not all their class credits transfer and I would pretty much have to start over. I planned on continuing my education with a Masters Degree or Law School; however it will NOT be with Kaplan. I will not waste another dime or minute with them more than needed. In my experience, this is what you'll get when you choose Kaplan: 1. Admission counselors who suddenly no longer respond to emails or phone call questions after they receive your money. 2. Professors who teach so poorly that they have already been dismissed by other institutions. 3. Professors who threaten to ban you from class for informing them that the webinar slides are too small to read. 4. Registrars who call you racist because you ask to change classrooms when your professor has such a thick accent that no one can understand a word uttered (and when classes are all audio, that's a big issue). 5. Pubic relations personnel who say they are concerned with your bad experience and schedule a time to talk but then are mysteriously unavailable. 6. 400 level classes that are so elementary that one could take the final on day one and pass. 7. Zero support from any department but financial aid. (After all, they want your money to continue to flow unhindered).
Why am I ranting? Because I paid this school a great deal of money for a promised quality education. Instead I am thrown a joke of an overly expensive diploma mill and my concerns ignored. Months of attempts to talk to someone -anyone - at Kaplan via multiple mediums about my horrid educational experience have gone unanswered. One would hope that they would at least want to prevent future students from repeating my experience, but no. Silence.
My next step is reporting these (and many more) ridiculous educational experiences to Kaplan's accreditation firm.

SHAME ON YOU KAPLAN and SHAME ON YOU, Dr. David ** and Dr. Rhonda ** and the rest of the Kaplan Cronies (faculty) who are too lame to stand up and say something against the University! I want to give kudos to a couple of faculty members (in particular, Dr. Desiree **) who have taken a stand against the University on this matter. Yes, Kaplan, you are a very large entity, you have lots of money and resources, and you have fancy IP lawyers such as Mimi ** at your beck and call. However, I have more than that. I have morals, and I have my integrity. In addition, I have all of my original work, every bit of it. From the original emails, concept documents, code, models, etc.
I also have Professors and Students willing to testify to the fact - the hard work I have contributed to the MyItConsultant.org website. Incidentally, Kaplan has partnered with Random hacks of Kindness on the Project and they are now being drawn into the case and soon “SHANE willing”, they will sever their ties with the University. Once again, do yourself a favor. If you are thinking about attending this University, think twice. Look at some non-profit Universities instead. In the end, you won’t regret it - as I have attending Kaplan!

In 2004, I completed a one-year certificate program through Kaplan's online university program. This was for the C.S.I. program. I was told before enrolling in this program by my admission counselor, a Micheal something Italian last name, I can't recall right off hand, that upon completion of this program that they would place us with a hiring agency, that they had a great success rate of students that were placed in jobs through this agency. Right so long story short here on the agency, there wasn't one. I also found that at the end of the program that there isn't an agency in the US that would accept my certification from Kaplan. I applied with several law enforcement agencies for C.S.I. work and was laughed at basically.
Beyond all of that, upon reading a lot of these stories I am wondering what Kaplan University is up to? Well that would be Kaplan University which is actually a branch of Iowa University. So on the financial side of this story here we go. I had to take out several student loans, went through FAFSA, had a Pell's grant, and above all of that I still had to fork out of pocket $3,000 to enroll. Everything was going along just fine and all of a sudden I began receiving calls from the financial aid office that for some reason she explained in a rush that though I had all of these other loans, I was still going to have to come up with $359.00 per month to remain enrolled. The total charge for the one year certificate program cost me around $11,000.00.
I was sent a letter and received a few phone calls telling me that I still owed $1,400.00 for some reason because there was a mistake in my financial aid forms and one of the student loans wasn't applied to my account at school. I paid all of the monies owed to Kaplan and had all but $1150.00 of my student loans paid off upon my graduation from my one year program at Kaplan. Which I paid off within a few months after graduating. Now mind you, this was in 2004. So riddle me this one everyone... How is it that in 2011 after filing my taxes like always, I receive a letter from the IRS telling me that my refund - Both the Federal and the state refund, have been applied to an outstanding debt that I owe to a company called Educational Credit Management Corp. I scratch my head and am totally in shock at this point wondering what the heck this is all about and what debt I could possibly owe to this company???
So, I try contacting this company and I get an answering system. So I leave my name, phone number, current address as requested so that I can get to a live person, which never happened. After I was transferred to the live person, I still got a voice mail and had to leave a message for someone to call me back which never happened. About four days later, I get a letter in the mail from this company telling me that I owe them $17, 250.49 for defaulted student loans. I of course go ballistic at this point, and I am completely distressed. So I send back a letter to these people demanding to know what it is I owe them this money for, and what were these student loans for and why. They send me a bunch of paperwork with my name on them and they were for Kaplan University but they were for the year of 2005 - 2006. I wasn't in attendance at Kaplan beyond 2004, so you can imagine my surprise knowing that I was attending school and I wasn't actually at school!!!!!
So I look at the documents and I can clearly tell that the signatures that are on the paperwork isn't mine. So I get back on the phone and try to contact this company again and still can't get a live person on the phone, to let them know that I DISPUTE the validity of these documents and I believe that I have been a victim of Fraudulent actions by someone. I never get a call back, so I write a letter to them again demanding someone contact me and get this straightened out because they are now taking my tax refunds fraudulently. So in the meantime, I contacted the IRS and they tell me there is nothing they can do about it, that I have to contact the company to resolve this matter. Great, now the government is going right along with this crap.
So it is now 2013 and they have taken my tax refunds for the past two years and not once have I gotten any kind of paperwork from the firm getting my money telling me it has been applied to an account balance I owe and how much would still be remaining on the balance or anything. So 2 days ago, I get a letter in the mail from company called Premiere Credit of North America, LLC. Their toll free number is 1-855-403-1844. They are based out of Indianapolis, IN with a PO box address. This company claims they are now collecting the debt that I owe to the Educational Credit Management Corp. And now that amount I owe has gone up to over $18,000.00.
Oh, it gets better, ha ha! Today I get a letter from a company called Performant Recovery Inc. out of Aurora, IL with a PO Box address which is on the outside of the envelope. Once I read this letter it says that they have been assigned by the Educational Credit Management Corp to collect the debt that I owe in the amount of $14,307.27 and on this one, it says the original creditor was Citibank ELT Student Loan. So inside the letter it says if I have a question regarding my account that I can write to this company and they will send me documents concerning this account but their address inside on the letter is a California address and yes, you guessed it, another PO box address. So, now I am wondering what company ECMC will have collecting this fraudulent debt from me next????
I am at a loss and I can't seem to get any help with this situation. I have even contacted lawyers regarding this and I haven't heard any word back from anyone. This reminds me of one of those weird sci-fi movies where there is a huge organized crime ring or the government is involved and corrupt. Anyway all kidding aside here, my credit now has been affected by all of this and it appears that these people are powerful enough that they can take your tax money with no problem, and there is nothing you can do about it! So I am at a loss on what to do here or which way to turn for help. So if anyone reads this that can help me or give me advice on what to do or what to do... please, I need help... Someone, please help us all... Help me!! I guess they are going to try and take me for the amount of $32,307.27. I wasn't at Kaplan beyond the one year I did my online classes. This clearly is fraud... Someone please help me, help us all...

I called today 11/04/2013. To check the status of the loan approval. Well they now tell me I owe an additional $561.00. I am like you just told me that it was only $300. I paid that. Now it’s another amount that I don’t have. So now I am 24 credits away from graduating and now I can’t unless I come up with this money. I am very upset. Is there anyone out there that can help with this. This is wrong for them to continue to get away with this. I tried to transfer to another school and if I do that I will have to go another 2 years because the credits don’t transfer. This is very upsetting. I don’t know what else to do. I have done all of this work at the school for nothing and all of the debt that I have is going to ruin my credit because I will not have a good job to even begin to pay this back.

I enrolled in Kaplan in 2009. Everything went very well at that point. I was able to get my Associates Degree in Accounting. So I decided that I would go back and get my BS in Accounting. That’s when all the problems came into place. They made me re-enroll; I wasn’t even out of school for a full two months. Then all the financial aid problems started to occur. I was giving them everything they asked for in a timely manner but for some reason it was always getting lost. So the financial aid office says... Now I am in my senior year. I need 24 more credits then I will be done.
Well I don’t have any money to finish school. They told me to apply for the Kaplan Choice Loan. Well I did that and I was denied. So they said you have to pay $300 and we will resubmit your application for the loan. I still haven’t heard anything and I just want to graduate so that I can get a better paying job. I have missed out on some many great opportunities because I don’t have the degree. I just don’t understand how I have over $60,000 in loans for an undergraduate degree and my sister has a master's and she is nowhere near that far in debt. Can someone please help? I left the Army in 2006 and went to CHI Institute which is part of the Kaplan family. I went for electrician so they took my GI Bill but still made me take student loans and kept them on top of the GI Bill. I found out later after completing the course that this school is not accredited. So I was employed 6 months after completing the course. So they screwed this veteran with student loans that should have never been. My stupidity realized as the 2008 crash happened that my job soon will be no more so in 2008, I went back to CHI for Computer Networking. Again, they took the remaining GI Bill I had and said I needed to take student loans out.
So now after I completed this course that Jan. of 2010, I was still left jobless and IT companies are looking for Bachelor degrees. So not only am I now over 20Gs in student loan debt that should have never happened since they got over 45Gs in GI Bill payments and sucked my veterans benefits dry while leaving me in debt. If this school does this to veterans, then I could only imagine what it does to low income people. I am still unemployed to this day because I lack a college degree and my combat injuries require me to get a desk job if I ever want to work again. After the VA heard my story and saw the bills and what this school did, they offered to send me to a real college paid in full. The education and teachers were good but the deceit and non-accreditation are evil and the fact that they took advantage of a disabled veteran with a brain injury who was overwhelmed and had no idea what they were doing till it was too late and they got away with raping me for my GI Bill money and student loans, sending me into a debt I will never be able to pay back since I live out of a car and couch surf. Don't get scammed by these soulless people.

I am in the master's degree program at Kaplan University. I was accused of plagiarism by my professor. He told me that I had to redo the assignment in order to get a grade. I re-did the assignment and received a grade for the assignment. However, the next day the professor removed my grade and reported me to the Provost Office for plagiarism. I did express through email to the professor that I checked my assignment numerous times through other plagiarism checker websites without any problems. This is my second plagiarism charge since being in the master's program. I appealed my first plagiarism charge however, it took the plagiarism department at Kaplan University 4 months to deny my first appeal for plagiarism. I let that slide even though I thought that professor was unfair.
Now, I find myself again going through a non-winning battle against Kaplan University. I do not understand why the professor would make me redo the assignment, give a grade for the assignment and then remove my grade a day later. We even had a talk on the phone about my assignment. I have a strange feeling that Kaplan University is up to no good due to the fact that I am a Vocational Rehab. student, which the Veterans Affairs pays for my education. In addition, I have only one class remaining before I get my master's degree with a 3.88 GPA. That is proof that I do not need to cheat.
I have put in an appeal however, I believe that will be a waste of time because Kaplan has already put an F on my grade for the class one day after I did my appeal. I also believe that the current government shutdown is having something to do with Kaplan University taking advantage of veterans. I know that Kaplan does not get paid from the VA until the shutdown is over. I just want to know if anyone has experienced any problems fighting plagiarism charges with Kaplan University professors.

This place is a nightmare! Agreed I enjoy my classes and also nothing was wrong until after the trial period. Had I known, I would have to go through this nightmare, I would have left! At first I was awarded a scholarship from Kaplan plus I had Fasfa and loans. During the trial period, it showed I owed $700 and that was without my Fasfa. My amount to be paid by me according to Fasfa was 0. So I knew I would be getting money back for supplies (to pay for my computer - I would never have bought this had I not needed it for class. I was required to have a certain computer to be able to do my work). Every time I call, I get, "Oh, it's been sent. You should hear in just a few days." Then when I call again, "Oh it didn't get put in for some reason. I sent it to 'that' department." When you ask if you can speak to someone in 'that' dept they tell you "they" don't take calls! Of course not because they might have to do something.
I was "picked for review" by Kaplan and had to get more information on me than I knew about me! They had my transcript yet said they didn't. I sent an unofficial and my past college sent it twice plus it was faxed. Finally they entered that - then they needed me to hook them to my tax return. I did that; it said it was successful yet - THEY said it wasn't giving them the info they needed, so I sent them a copy of my professionally done taxes. No good. Then they had to have a tax transcript so I had to wait on IRS. Then that was sent. That was the 1st week in September!
AS SOON as the trial period was over, my charges went from $700 me owing to me owing $3900.00!!!! Still have called 4 more times to be told "I don't know why it shows having everything we need. You should have received your fin aid package..." Duh- why is this school so bad with fin. aid?! I need to document everything because now they say they NEVER see where I only owed $700.00. This is horrible. I read now about charges for fraudulent charges and misuse of funds. I'm scared I have made a huge mistake. I'm stuck with payments on a computer I can not afford and they are going to come after me for the past tuition. I'm waiting to hear because it's so late in the semester we can't grant you the funding/scholarship, and I am going to owe the whole thing...
Any one have any suggestions on what to do??? I had already been accepted by another college this past summer and already had my package without the scholarship Kaplan offered me and once I started, the school would have been sending me a check for enough to pay for the computer- but Kaplan called me in July and offered a little bit more of what I was wanting so when they offered me the additional scholarship towards my tuition, I switched (I had added Kaplan to my Fasfa app ) so I know it shouldn't be this hard or take this long. I sure wish someone had some advice for me.

I found out right before I started this semester in July 2013 that I have run out of funding for my tuition. I was told by Kaplan's financial aid department that I should try to apply for private loans which I did and was denied. I then was told by Kaplan's financial aid department to get two letters of being denied for the private loan. I did that and waited for the results of my Kaplan Choice loan. When I called the school today, 9-27-13, I was told that I was denied for the loan because they sent me a stipend from the previous year and because I didn't return the check, I was denied. The stipend they sent me I spent on my three sons returning back to school for the new school year (2013). I had no money to get them school uniforms and schools supplies and when I received the check, I spent it on that, thinking I would get the Kaplan Choice Loan to pay for my remaining tuition.
I should have been told from the very beginning that there would be a chance that I would run out of funding. I am 13 credits away from obtaining a Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice. I'm a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, been on the President's List Honor 3 times and have been on the Dean List Honor for every time I wasn't on the President's List. It seems so unfair that they would deny me their loan, when I have come so far, working so hard to achieve my dream for it just to be snatched away from me just like that. I feel like I was set up for failure. When I started school, I had no money - the reason I took out the loans in the first place and now I have only 2 semesters to finish and I still can not pay the amount they are asking and they know that.
So I'm left out owing a huge tuition bill and no degree. This seems so wrong. I have kept my grades up the whole 3 years I was there, never failed a class. I have a 3.6 GPA and I have all A's and B's with the exception of one C. I thought I was pursuing my dream but instead, I have accumulated a huge bill and no degree (not because I chose to not do my best). I need help please. I am a single mom of three sons who depend on me to provide for them. My oldest son will be off to college next year and I pray he does not have the same problem I have and is able to elevate himself to a great life that our children so deserve.

During and after my admissions process and my classes have started I start seeing transactions on my financial aid account. First, I was awarded my federal loan (unsub) and not my sub. I brought this up to their attention. The first thing that they wanted to make sure of is that I did not have any over lapping loans, it was concluded that I did not have any over lapping loans and the problem would be corrected. Second my financial aid was posted twice for my second semester and not for my first. I called and the first thing that they wanted to check was to see if I had any over lapping loans, I was told that this is not the case and my account would be updated. After the matter was looked into I was later notified that I had over lapping loans.
I insisted that my loans were not over lapping. I finished my prior school with an Associates, on July 7, 2013. I did not start attending Kaplan until July 25, 2013. Apparently my date of separation from my prior school was entered as 4/29/15. The Board of Education did notify me that the correction has been made, but yet Kaplan insists that I have over lapping loans and are refusing to disburse any financial aid for my first semester, giving me a balance of over 1,800 dollars.
My next problem with Kaplan is in regards to my official transcript. Without my transferred credits I am at a level 1 at KU, but with my credits I will be at level 3, and this will have positive response on the terms that I entered into Kaplan. My former school mailed my transcript on the 6th of September, and until this date (-26-2013) they have not been received. I was later given 3 electronic sources as to how my transcript could be sent for it to be official. On the 24th of Sept. they have not received my transcript which was sent to documents at Kaplan. The next day I was told that my transcript could not be accepted that way and that it was still unofficial. Now I have requested for my former school to send the transcript again, so I am waiting for the results.
Before all this had started, I knew how much federal aid that I had to continue my education. During the process of admissions I was told that my entire cost of school was covered by my financial aid. Another point that I would want to pass across is that Kaplan offered a 3 week free trial for attending classes. If after the three week I decided that I did not want to attend I could withdraw at no charge. After my three weeks had expired is when I start being faced with problems in the financial aid dept.
After reviewing all the complaints that Kaplan University has received, and all concerning the same matters, I have decided to take legal actions against Kaplan as well. What I will note is that I am really enjoying the classes at the University, but I do feel that there is something more to this University than meets the eye.

I am in the early stages of a lawsuit against Kaplan University. I first found Kaplan online and their program only required 90 credit hours. An admissions adviser began to chat with me on their page and asked if she could call. After speaking with the adviser she sent me the paperwork needed for admission (already filled out with my information). She walked me through the process and it was done. I began school in August of 2009.
After 2 years at Kaplan and one class left I was forced to take a leave of absence due to Kaplan's negligence in telling me I needed my clinical application in 3 terms prior to taking my last class. During this absence I became very ill and need a surgery. The day I was supposed to go back to class was the day I was due in surgery (mind you I had a 6 week recovery). When I called Kaplan to extend my leave for medical reasons they denied me. I was devastated to say the least! I had only one class left after two years. I had no other choice but to withdrawal from the school in hopes that I could transfer my credits and finish at a brick and mortar school.
When I spoke with Kaplan I asked what documents were needed to file in order to withdrawal and they told me, "Just don't show up for class". Being smart I knew this would not be the case so I sent them a certified letter of my withdrawal. After withdrawing I began the processed of sifting through all my information. Here's what it boils down to, Kaplan's website was misleading as it did not state reference student catalog for state specific requirements, the enrollment agreement that was filled out by the admissions adviser was also misleading as it stated 90 credit hours for that chosen degree, classes were interrupted and no makeup classes were given and Kaplan still got paid and all those credits that I earned in the course of 2 years are non transferable.

My nightmare started back in 2007 when I applied to Kaplan online university and was pushed to get FAFSA student loans. I spent four hours over the phone with them doing this. After that I started my classes and it was so confusing navigating through it! I attended all my classes and participated in them but I would get zero grade on participation. I tried calling the people in charge. I wrote my teacher asking to review it since I had been graded as if I had not even been in class. No answer from anyone! Also, the teacher was mostly talking about stuff that was happening in her life or about books she read, not about the class. I paid back some of the loan and I'm gonna try to get a hold of someone at Kaplan to try to remove this from my credit. I don't think I should have to pay for something I was not credited for. I was then sent a stipend that Kaplan claim was an error on their behalf, apparently funding that I was not to receive.
After one week of this incident my classes was closed by student accounts because of monetary over issuance. The rep stated it was no problem. She also stated that I could complete both degrees at the same time.
As time went on I too had problems with the financial aid office and was constantly back and forth on the phone with them concerning what I owe them. The employees were rude and did not have any phone etiquette and every time you phone, you would get different answers to the same question. You would get a different Academic Adviser or different financial aid officer. I had dropped a class before the time limit was up but they said, I didn't drop in time. The employee that I spoke with stated that I would have to pay for that class even though I had proof that I had dropped in time.
Another incident with Kaplan financial aid office; I had paid my account up to date with a "0" balance. I had to take a leave because I had surgery. Upon my return I had difficulty trying to get back because no one was calling me back. I had to constantly call them back. I completed my courses and graduated May 2012 but I could not get my degree because I needed to show proof of my Associate Degree. Mind you I was told that I could do both.
I just about completed paying the $4000.00 dollars because Kaplan threaten to put the amount on my credit report if I did not pay. I wrote Kaplan a letter but I have not received any response from them but they constantly harass me about paying the $4000.00 dollars. People just want things to happen on their time, this is why they mess up. As soon as something does not go their way they're rushing to do a bad review. Kaplan has all the resources there. They even have their own damn library! Almost at the end of the term, I had a balance of $525 because of my financial aid issues.. NOT KAPLAN.... FINANCIAL AID!
Kaplan was so helpful they immediately put in an additional funding request and I was granted an extra $1800 in a Pell grant. The extra money was sent out to me. People really need to get it together. Online education is the new future... either get on board or get left behind! Everything in life will not go your way!!!! For everyone who has had problems with Kaplan University Online giving verbal misrepresentations or the runaround regarding financial aid or other questionable practices, you should file a complaint with the Iowa Attorney General as they have jurisdiction over Kaplan Online. Make sure your complaint is detailed with dates, documentation, be prepared to offer proof and what you have done to try to resolve the issue. I started Kaplan online in August of 2008. Things were going well at this point. My classes were good and my teachers knew what they were talking about. As each year passed though, the financial aid department got worse and worse about telling me what I needed to continue going to school. Finally, my last year came up which was 2011 and right from the start, I did my FASFA and was hoping I would be ahead of the game so to speak. I ended up getting a call from the financial aid department and they wanted me to fill out my Parent Plus loan. I did this right away; however, I did it incorrectly at first. I called Kaplan and told them what I did and they said everything would be fine and that the second one I filled out would be the one they let through. Right after I was told this, the financial aid officer told me some crazy news.
They told me that I had to get this thing called an aggregated loan clearance letter from where I was taking my loans out from. The financial aid person told me what to do and that was the end of the conversation. When I woke up the next day, my father got his confirmation in his email about the Parent Plus loan. So at this point, I was confused because if there was no more money from my loan providers, then how was the Parent Plus loan processed? Then deciding that things were not right I called Kaplan Online's financial aid department again. When talking to the aid, I asked about the aggregated loan clearance letter and they told me that they do not even understand why the last person brought it up to me. That it was something they took care of at the school and if they couldn't get it taken care of, then they would call me and have me try to get it. I was relieved to hear this news.
This is where things got out of hand right around February. After this point, I was being called nearly every week for roughly four months straight talking about how I had to fill out a Parent Plus loan so I could continue going to college. They also were telling me that I had to get this aggregated loan clearance letter from my loan provider. The horrible thing about that is I would be told one day I needed it and then the next I wouldn't need it anymore. I was getting called non-stop about how I owed Kaplan money and that if something wasn't done, I wouldn't be able to stay in school. Then I would call the financial aid department and try to find out what could be done. After each conversation, I would ask if everything is good and my balance with Kaplan was 0 and they would say yes. Right around June, if I remember correctly, the phone calls stopped.
Around August/September, I decided it had been a long time since I heard anything from Kaplan. I called them and asked about the aggregated loan clearance letter and the aid told me that they got it and there was nothing to worry about, that my balance with Kaplan was 0 and that I would have to start paying my loan provider back after the six months of being out of college. I thought things were finally good, that there was nothing to worry about. Then a week before I was supposed to graduate, Kaplan's billing department called me and told me that I owed them around ten thousand dollars. I was in shock. I got off the phone with the billing department and quickly called the financial aid department. They told me that they never got my Parent Plus loan and that there was no aggregated loan clearance letter ever sent to them.
To make matters worse, the aid told me that I actually owed them an even bigger sum of money - that it was around fifteen thousand to twenty thousand. At this point, they finally started investigating what had happened over the last year. I was called by the person doing the investigation and they told me that I shouldn't have even been allowed to stay in school from around March and on. They sent me an email stating that my valid past due amount was $9,042.27 and that would increase the amount I owed to $18,218.27. They even said that due to the inconveniences they would reduce the bill by $9,569.14 to make what I owed them $8,649.13.
I am asking if there is anything I can do to get this money that they say I owe taken away and the money that I have paid them so far given back to me. I was going to let this go but I can't even try to get my master's degree because of the money that they say I owe. They told me one thing and then another and I still have the email talking about what money I owed them.

When I first started attending Kaplan online in late 2010, everything seemed fine for the most part. I was 20 then, and was just entering college at that time so I had no previous school experiences. The initial enrollment and financial aid processes were not ridiculously terrible (in terms of the speed and ease of completion) - it was only mildly stressful because one or two things needed to be resolved, in addition to it being my first college-enrollment experience. Things were alright for a while; the teachers seemed supportive and knowledgeable in their field of education, and I wasn't encountering too many issues with my student loans. However, my experience with Kaplan grew progressively more negative as time went on.
As of June 2013, I've had too many excruciatingly stressful Kaplan experiences to count, especially with the Financial Aid office. Every time I need to renew my federal financial aid/FAFSA, I literally spend weeks going in circles with the Financial Aid office because the majority of the representatives & supervisors are highly indifferent to the needs and concerns of their students. For example, each time my FAFSA must be renewed, the Financial Aid office is supposed to use their "professional judgment team" to determine the nature of my dependency status and ultimately complete the FAFSA process themselves.
If you're wondering why, it's because I'm considered at-risk of homelessness & I'm under 24 y/o, which is the age that Kaplan considers to be an "adult" and independent; so, they must review my case themselves to verify that I am, in fact, independent/at-risk of homelessness even though I'm not an "adult." Sounds pretty easy, right? - Dead wrong. Each time I call the Financial Aid office, a rep gives me different recommendations/instructions from the previous one, and they typically contradict the previous instructions in totality as well. They'll tell you to just wait 72 business hours and then call back to see what progress has been made. And when you call back, nothing is different, no progress has been made at all on anything, and there's usually some "other" factors that are being claimed as the cause of your financial aid problems - not what you were initially told. So they tell you that they're submitting paperwork to correct the issue (if you're lucky), and that it should be through the processing stage after 72 hours. And the nightmarish cycle continues...
Not only are the representatives of the Financial Aid office (and sometimes Academic Advising) indifferent towards problems that need to be addressed in a timely fashion, they'll refuse to admit when they've given you the wrong information or have been the cause of your problems. I was blocked from attending the first 2 weeks of classes because Academic Advising completely failed to tell me that I needed to notify the Financial Aid department whenever my credit hours for the upcoming classes didn't total up to either 10 or 12 credit hours.
Long story short, the Financial Aid department told me a handful of different things. Some said I needed to make (quite large) student payments now to be able to attend class (how does someone at risk of homelessness manage that?). Others told me that they didn't know what the cause of the issue was, and that they would look into it for me, only to tell me things such as my parents' information was missing or that I would receive paperwork to fill out and return. Only by demanding to speak with the manager was anything accomplished, and even then, I had to continue contacting the manager of Academic Advising in order to get the teachers to work with me due to the circumstances. They were trying to barely give me any time to complete makeup work and were telling me at first that the auto-graded quizzes from the weeks missed couldn't be fixed - that I would just have to deal with accepting zeros on the quizzes I was forced to miss. I really regret not researching this school much more before I enrolled there because each semester causes me so much stress & anxiety due to the departments' incompetence and deceptiveness.

I was due to graduate in March of 2010. In September of 2009, my husband committed suicide. I contacted the school, told them of my situation and took some time off. I went back the following semester and tried to complete my course work/focus on school. I was unable to concentrate, I withdrew... About 6 months to a year went by and I contacted Kaplan about my interest in returning. I had been receiving calls from the school about money owed to them?
I found this strange as I was on financial aid and did not owe them money. I was informed "The requirement for a semester/quarter is 61%. I had completed 60% and cannot return to Kaplan until I pay them $3,000." I find this outrageous. I had a unique situation. I have the proof that it happened. They of course did and do not want to hear it. I am 4 classes away from a degree I worked so hard for... The financial aid and admission people are of no help and rude call center employees. I do not know where to go with my fight or appeal with Kaplan.

As of right now, I am in a domestic violence class and was informed by financial aid about two weeks ago that if I don't pay them $900 by June 1, 2013, I will be blocked from class and dropped from the school. I don't have that kind of money. I am not sure what I can do. All I do know is I have wasted over three years and almost $60,000, and nothing to show for it. In my opinion, I believe this school is committing fraud and taking advantage of everyone attending.

I had applied to Kaplan. My husband is in the Military, so I filled out appropriate paperwork. Kaplan stated all was well. The GI Bill of my husband took care of everything and I could start with my classes. I went through 2 semesters. Books were sent to me, etc. Then after I registered for my 3rd semester, Kaplan stated I owed $5,000. When I spoke to several different people, they told me that I would have to pay the $5,000 or else I could not attend anymore. When I told them that all was okayed by the GI Bill, as they had told me prior to my first registration, I found out when contacting the military that in fact they had no record of me applying.
Kaplan lied to me, told me all was fine and let me register for all my classes, when in fact that was untrue. Now, I owe over $6,000 had to drop my 3rd semester classes as I could not afford to pay for classes, where I wouldn't have signed up in the first place unless Kaplan had sent me paperwork okaying my financial aid through the Military. After being in Kaplan for three months, they cut off the internet and did not provide any of the resources that were supposed to be provided to the students for their education. I ended up spending the rest of the 6 months sitting there in lectures with no questions being answered, being told not to do my work because it was too proficient, as well as being told not to talk intelligently. I received no help in finding a job. I'm aware of the fact that they don't give one to you but they help you and that did not happen.
This is the second vocational school I had gone to and had never received such bad teachings and no care that I have gotten from Kaplan. We were all told at the beginning of the year that we should not be going to school for computers in which I ignored because it's my life not theirs. (At least now, we know why they were HP layoffs.) I was also hounded by the director of the campus as well as the rest of my class from the director for personal dramatic reasons which are completely an invasion of my privacy, let alone unprofessional. I sent documents for the income that I make. I was never given any help in finding a job, so I'm working for two temp services. Family members did not believe in Kaplan (the school used to be Hamilton College) and the degree I got is worthless. I saw an attorney a couple of years ago and she thought the degree was completely worthless.
I went through bankruptcy, but of course, the student loans couldn't be dismissed. I'm still stuck with a huge debt (about $29k) that I can't even begin to pay off. I wish that I had stayed away from Kaplan. It was a huge mistake ever going there to wind up with a degree that is worthless. Someone told me about some girl who went to Hamilton College and she ended up working as a dish washer. That someone told me not to go there. I wish I had taken her advice!

I started school with Kaplan Online on November 24, 2010 to April 20, 2010. I am now in debt to the Department Of Education to the tune of $17,000 & turned over to ERS. With interest & etc., it's a total of $23,000! I had issues the whole time I was going to school with them in the first place. You cannot get them to call you back. They also never know where your educational expense money is and if you do get a check, it is a very small amount of money. I was given a total of $3,149 from the school. I was unaware of all of this until today, May 6th, 2013. I called the school to see if I could enroll with them and finish my Associates Degree in Health & Science. I was on the President's list and the Dean's list at this school.
I had a TBI (traumatic brain injury) and had to be academically dismissed from school. I was told at that time that I could come back to school when able. I called them last week and talk with an advisor about returning to school. I was told that I had to write a letter to the Dean to be able to come back. I then found out like I said today that they would not let me come back. The system they use states that I will not be able to finish and if they did enroll me the system would just kick me back out and I would be dismissed again. So I could find another school to go to and transfer my credits, only to find out they cannot be used at another school.
I believe they would not allow me to come back because it is fraud. I could not in any way control what happened to me. The school at that time said I would be able to come back! Now I cannot and owe all this money. This was a total waste of time and money that the school stole from me. Do not go to this school; they are taught to lie and tell you whatever to just get your money! I wanted to try and see if I could finish school and try to go back to work.

I spoke to the advisors but still was put down as withdrew or abandoned classes. When I tried to get back into school, they told me that the program changed and 50% of my credits were no good because those classes were not offered anymore. I was then told that I would have to take over 50 more credit classes to receive my Bachelor's Degree in Information Technology.
I was pissed off and now I am trying to go back because other colleges said that those 147 credits only apply to Kaplan's course and would only accept about 50%. Well, that pisses me off because those courses are not easy and to retake classes or new ones to regain the lost credits would only add two years to get my degree. Kaplan is very hard to get on the phone except when you owe them money because they will call you seven times a day until they get you.

I started working for Kaplan University in 2009, with the condition that I enroll with Kaplan. At that time, I did not have my bachelor’s degree. As per the Department of Education, this was a requirement for an Admissions position in any school (I’m not sure if these requirements have changed). Kaplan informs me that I would qualify for the Kaplan Employee Opportunity Program. I completed all the paperwork after a couple of weeks and handed it over to my then Team Lead; he would have to approve and submit to the documents to HR.
I started the first semester with Kaplan and did not sign off any loan documents. All went well. After the 2nd semester, I started getting very discouraged with the job since I realized how they pushed employees to enroll students that obviously would not be successful in taking online classes, either because they lacked high school education, or they had no computer availability (Informing a prospect that they can use a library computer, when most of our prospect, honestly, had no discipline to even plan a day and usually had children or other major obligation, was not a good business practice). The school did not care; it was all about the enrollment.
I was soon being considered for a team lead role. I did well and always met my goals. Obviously, I was good at manipulating prospects into enrolling. I decided to quit when I realized that just to meet our goals, we were practically giving answers to the admission test to prospects just so we can enroll them without giving much thought of the effects of the debt we were putting them in, and how this would affect their credit nor their future life. Not to mention, these students barely understand instructions, and they often couldn’t pay the admission fee; they usually had little to no support from family and friends. They were bound to be unsuccessful and drop out. Several weeks after quitting my job with Kaplan, I started receiving loan invoices and notices. I have since been paying these loans in fear of garnishments or ruining my credit, but now I owe over $12,000 for three classes that was a waste of time since all we did was chat.
I know of an employee who received his bachelor’s degree in Information Technology from Kaplan under the KEOP program and has not been able to find work in the IT field; not even an IT position at Kaplan. Go figure! I have since attempted to resolve with the school, but to no avail. The original staff is no longer at Kaplan, nor their HR Department. The manager I reported to is also no longer with the school. They don’t return my calls at this point. They claim they don't have any paper documents or back up in my files. Yet, I still get calls and emails from their admissions representative trying to get me to enroll. What a joke!

I had emailed the instructor and the school to let them know that I would no longer be attending the school, and if there were any questions or concerns to please call or send me postal mail. Well three years went by, and I never heard a thing from Kaplan University Online.
In August of 2011, I started receiving documents stating my wages are to be garnished. I tried calling the phone number on these documents and it was always busy; I had tried this for three months. I then received another document stating that my wages are going to be garnished. At this time, it is now November 2011, and I am having my wages garnished. In 2012, I filed my income tax. And on Feb. 9, 2012, I went to pick up my income tax check and it is not there; instead, I am notified that it has been garnished. At this time, I found out who had taken the income tax check so I called to the Treasury Department. I was notified that there were two student loans under my name, and that is what the garnishings are going toward.
So long story short, after making numerous phone calls, I found out that there were two student loans that were applied for using my name and personal information. All were done without my approval. I had also found out that Kaplan University Online had me enrolled past the date of my withdrawal. They not only did that, but they have me enrolled for two different times in the same year. I am still investigating on this situation. I have a lot of people involved in this and hopefully between all of us who have been dealing with Kaplan University will be able to have peace of mind soon.

I enrolled at Kaplan University for the Bachelor's in Psychology program under a Federal Student Loan, since I cannot afford to pay tuition at the moment. The course work and my grades were fine even though I did find the classes to be a bit iffy with how teachers conducted their seminars online. I found it more to be back and forth on stupid questions and technical issues than actually really reviewing material and actually being taught something by the instructors. Their reviews to my work and assignments for the most part just read "Great Job" or "Good Job." Nothing more elaborate or in depth. To me, that just seemed a bit too blah for a psychology class, where we are discussing mental states of mind and what not. But I didn't question it and just kept going.
Then 3 1/2 weeks into the semester, Hurricane Sandy hits New Jersey, where my father and half siblings live. My sister's side of the family and other members of our family suffered losses of homes, so the family had to jump and help out. I had to fly to New Jersey and assist. I advised my instructors of the issue and advised I would be behind on my course work but would try to catch up as much as I could when I return. Once I returned from New Jersey and saw that I would be too behind on my coursework to continue with my good grades, I made the decision to drop the courses and retake them in January. So I sent my representative an email explaining the situation and requesting to be dropped, not withdrawn so that I may retake my courses in January again. What was that for? My representative basically, after my email to her, took her time in responding; but my Federal Student Loan through Direct Loans was immediately contacted by Kaplan advising them I was no longer enrolled in school.
The representative withdrew me from the whole program including the school, and then now, I get a nice letter from Kaplan stating that if I want to re-enter the school and/or program, I need to pay them close to $3k in tuition. How is this possible? I have sent emails to different people. Every time, I receive a different email from someone and was being constantly told to contact a different department. I should have never been withdrawn from the program since that is not what I requested. I was on student loan, so Direct Loans should have never been contacted as if I withdrew. And now, I am getting a letter saying I owe money? Everything to get enrolled and start the school was fine and handled properly. I did see a lot of complaints from different students online, but I honestly didn't think I would have issue and I assumed maybe people misunderstood something represented by the school, which happens all the time. But now, having my own issue and experience, it is true.
The representative doesn’t give you the full story and then you get it in the end. All I wanted was to drop, to retake and continue with my education. Instead, they withdrew me and advised Direct Loans so they can cancel my tuition. Now I apparently owe them money and can't go back to school because of it. This whole experience is bogus and the school seems to be a bit bogus as well. I have just filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau today, and I am going to continue sending emails to as many people as I can at Kaplan until this issue gets resolved.

It started with her calling me ''uneducated'' just because I offered advice. I said my bit to her, told her I will bah her character at every chance if she disrespects me again. She never replied. I let it go. We even gave compliments on each other's topics and the situation was defused. We also received emails from the teacher and she also acknowledged it in our upcoming seminar. Everything is good, until a week later.
The asst. dean, Ms. Tessa **, emailed me with a violation regarding this handled manner. Now obviously I was reported - but why? It was already discussed and done with. Keep in mind I have an appeal out already due to my criminal justice teacher, Jack **, who seems to want to obviously misgrade my work and discredit my education, time and money with no regards; like I'm not going to see it and report it. After I received the email regarding my violation, instead of going incredible hulk on the asst. dean for all the right reasons, I replied ''LOL yeah, okay'' to brush it off and keep it moving. She then gave me another violation through email, which is not on the guidelines and unjust. She also never responded to any of my calls prior to the first violation, but proceeded to email me with irrelevant comments like "Read the code of conduct articles," which I did a long time ago and it states these steps:
1. Verbal warning (I never received a call).2. Written warning (email, got it).
3. Grade reduction (didn't get).
4. Suspension (didn't get it).
5. Dismissal (got it).
So from the looks, they went from step 0-2, then 2-5 in 1 hour. Really! I asked why the difference in Ohio and California courses as she showed me was a difference of $200.00. She had me speak with the Director of Education in Bakersfield. He didn’t know why there is such a big difference in price. I refuse to pay $22,000.00 for a $16,000 course. And honestly, the name Kaplan does not have a reputation. As of right now, I have to pay $5,000.00 for going to Kaplan in Ohio for 2 months of schooling. I have all the papers and everything that Kaplan in both states gave me.

This is an unfair school and I am very upset that our loans have been unfairly distributed to a very unfair school and not to mention what happens to our degree when you cannot find work. I enrolled in Kaplan/Texas Careers in Beaumont, Texas in early 2008. The enrollment officer was more than glad to accept me. I was promised all sorts of things - financial aid, job placement, etc. The school was a joke! The teachers were so unqualified. In 4 months of class, we had 5 different teachers. Most of the time, we were told to just read the chapters and do the exercise in the back of the book. Like I said before, the teachers were very unqualified and the class was a joke. As for job placement, ha! What a joke. I was referred to a temp agency. I muddled my way through it and managed to graduate, did my intern. We were never once told anything about taking any sort of Certificate Exam. So here we are, 4 years later, and I'm still not employed in the field of my training (Medical Office Specialist) and I still owe thousands in Student Loans that I cannot pay. All I want is my student loan debt wiped free because Texas Careers in Beaumont, Texas is a joke! Please, any lawyer willing to speak to me, send email!

Each time I was told that the credits would transfer and the school was CA accredited. Both of these statements are wrong. I now have an AAS which is basically no good, as I cannot work as a paralegal in CA. I also have to retake classes Kaplan said would transfer.

This is my 3rd Kaplan course which I chose the online program. I have a 4.0 GPA and am trying to achieve my goal of a master's in Psychology with an emphasis on addictions. I found out that although Kaplan is accredited, which they will tell you over and over, your state must recognize and approve your course program (master in Psych). Otherwise, the accreditation does mean crap. I have phoned the school many times and they have been of no help. It is only after I friend-ed their page on Facebook and started stating these facts did I get a return phone call. I have gotten 2 calls today based on my Facebook note to people to check their state for approval of the program. I always thought if the school was accredited, then I could get a job with my degree after I completed the requirements. No questions asked. That is not the case.
If the state does not approve your program, which they do not for a master in Psych, then you are screwed. Once you pay the money, you are screwed. I have read most of the reviews on here and I have experienced most of the complaints everyone else is mentioning. The customer service sucks royal. They are real nice up until they get your financial aid or cash depending on your payment arrangements. I have never experienced anything like this and I am disgusted with this school.

So when I started at Kaplan in March of 2011, I thought everything was fine, dandy and good to go! First terms were okay. Then, a few people from class decided to cheat, which I witnessed and nothing was done except them bringing up my name to the said people cheating. Then, as I was starting my extern at an office, the girl that was supposed to be training me, stuck me on filing only and to see where I was academically for the CMA test, which has nothing to do with an externship. She wouldn't let me shadow taking patients back, she wouldn't let me make appointments, she wouldn't let me do anything and mind you, I have been a medical assistant for eleven years and went back to get my Associate in Medical Assisting so I knew way more than she did.
I ended up getting pulled out of that extern site and was told that I had to wait till the next term, until the coordinator could put me elsewhere. I was told that if he didn't find me a spot or I had no leads for him, that I wouldn't graduate! Isn't that his job to find me a place? So, externship over, didn't get hired on because of staffing issues at the site. And here I am 5 months later, no job! I’ve been on countless interviews and nothing! Even some girls that were in my class are having the same issue. I had heard there was a stigma with Kaplan graduates not getting hired because of undisclosed reasons. And I am really starting to believe it.
Thank you career services for being no help at all in finding a job, sending bad leads or job leads that haven't been in existence for months! I want my loan money to be refunded back and send me on my way instead of trying to transfer somewhere else and waste more money!

They have given me every excuse in the world about the reason why I never received my money. I'm still waiting on my check and everyone I talk to ends up giving me different stories about when the check will be sent to me. When asking to talk to the so-called ombudsman, no one can seem to find her nor can they understand any of the notes that are on my account. I joined Kaplan students in 02/2010. My fist issue started in my second term, where I was advised I could take three classes as I had credit on my account that would cover the expense. I completed the courses without issues and moved on into my third term. At the end of my third term, I received a letter stating that I owed Kaplan several thousand dollars as the extra class was not covered. I called and called to get the issue resolved and was basically told “too bad” and worked to pay it off monthly from that point until now.
Issues continued in my 8th term (Clinical 1 Term), I was informed that the school could not find me a place to take the practicum; I would need to take a leave of absence for a term for them to secure a site. At the end of the 10-week clinical leave, they still had not secured a site but allowed me to move into my Clinical 2 classes in hopes of having a site secured by the end of the 10 weeks. A site was still not secured at the end but was found 2 weeks after starting my last term with Kaplan and the start of my externship classes (32 weeks later!). At the finish of my practicum, an externship site could not be found (here we go again), and I again start the externship late after the completion of all my classes and student career.
Needless to say, I finished my externship hours four weeks ahead of the deadline given by Kaplan only to find that the very day that they approved the externship paperwork, and hours that they dropped me from school and sent back my funding. Ugh! At this point I am more than angry as I have driven 140 miles daily for 5 weeks to and from my externship site, which is not cheap at today’s gas prices. They did re-enroll me and updated my grades, but cannot get back the funding sent. Furthermore, the $1000.00 tuition voucher that I received in the beginning to offset expenses, they will not give to me because I had to take a clinical leave; even though it was their issue of not securing a site and the recommendation of the Assistant Dean of Placement to do so. I even sent the email that was received from her to the financial aid department in which it states they were unable to place me in my next classes due to no clinical practicum site.
I was advised today by Kaplan, that because of the issues, they would have paid for the clinical classes, but because I chose to go on leave instead, there is nothing they can do; in other words “too bad!” Pay for my classes? I really wish I would have known that! Furthermore, they stated they will be unable to get the money back that was sent back to the lenders and others; even though they acknowledge they screwed up. So to sum it up nicely, I owe money (because of them, again) and until paid they will not let me get my degree. On another note, they had a signed form stating all credits on my account, including from lenders, were supposed to be sent back to me directly. Just another screw-up they are not willing to correct.

Everyone in my final MBA capstone course graduated with a 4.0 GPA, even the ones who couldn't string a sentence together to save their lives and are not business savvy whatsoever. A 4.0 GPA is not a bragging point given the fact that almost everyone graduates from Kaplan with a 4.0. The diploma is basically worthless because you can't transfer the credits to a brick and mortar or another online university.
To make matters worse, Kaplan "over-awarded" me $8400 and notified me - via their collection agency without first trying to contact me - two years after I graduated. Kaplan is legally responsible for monitoring whether a student is near or at their aggregate limit the student can borrow from the government. Kaplan asks for the monies from the government and they are responsible for over- or under-awarding a student financial aid. Kaplan knowingly borrowed too much money on my behalf (per legislation, funds now go directly to the schools) and they refunded $8400 to the government. I am fighting this and I’m not settling until they prove I owe the debt and offer some token gesture to resolve this amicably.

I am a former student of Kaplan University online. I am totally disabled and have been for many years. I informed Kaplan of that and asked them if they needed any letter from my doctor, etc. I was told no and just don't talk about it. I entered the criminal justice program. I wanted to become a probation officer and again, asked if my disabilities could restrict me from becoming a probation officer. Again, I was told no and not to tell anybody, that I would be okay. I managed to complete my associates degree. At that time, I found out Kaplan had totally misrepresented the program to me. My disabilities would prevent me from using a gun and due to the meds and my disabilities, I would be disqualified. I would be placing myself and others in danger, etc.
To add insult to injury, the age requirement is 37 at the time of application. I was well into by 40's when I entered the program. When I attempted to confront Kaplan, they took an oh-well-attitude, "that's your bad luck". I am now the proud owner of an associates degree that is not worth the paper it is written on and being $45,000 in the hole. I was so determined to make something out of my life. Common sense went right out the door. Kaplan convinced me that they were the only answer I had to reach my life's goals. Angry, betrayed, etc. only begins to describe my feelings about Kaplan and what happened.

My wife and I had just lost a baby to SIDS and she was, understandably, depressed and in need of something to keep her busy. We visited the San Diego admissions office to discuss a course that would end in her certification as a CVN. We went over the application carefully with the admissions advisor and my wife answered honestly the question about whether she had ever been convicted of a felony. She responded honestly that, yes, she had a felony drunk driving arrest several years prior. The admissions clerk asked why it was classified as a felony and we explained that the law mandates the felony is you do harm to anyone, including yourself. My wife had broken her foot and, therefore, was charged with a felony. Even though we later had it reduced to a misdemeanor, the question was, "Had you ever been convicted of a felony?" The admissions clerk said that this would not disqualify her, that they were more worried about crimes against persons, like battery, molestation, elder abuse, the sort of thing that a CVN would most likely commit. We even harped on the matter, questioning her and getting her assurance that this would not matter. Based on her word, and her alleged knowledge, we paid the tuition and my wife attended every single class and passed the state boards at the school on the last day.
She eagerly awaited her license from the state, only to receive a disqualification letter because of her felony conviction. The disappointment, coupled with the loss of her child, drove her into a deep depression from which she has not recovered. I called the school and, without threats of any lawsuit or anything like that, asked for the tuition back because it had been obtained by the fraudulent statements of the admissions clerk. For over six months I have been stalled by an executive named David, someone who keeps promising to look into it and make things right. What I really feel that he is doing is stalling until the statute of limitations runs for fraud. Before that happens, I plan to sue them for the tuition and damages for bad faith. The lesson here: admission clerks at for-profit colleges are like car salesmen. They will tell you absolutely anything to get your money, even lying to a poor woman who has just lost her baby.

Grading Bias, Terrible Financial Aid & No Student Support - The instructors are allowed to grade as they "feel". Each class is run and operated by the instructor, not the university. If you have an issue with an instructor or have a concern like question specific assignment criteria or grading practices, tough luck! I maintained a 3.96 GPA until my last term. I took a lower level elective (200 series) and questioned the grades I was making, as I could not get above an 81. All of my grades had been 96+ in all other classes prior to this.
Nothing happened and I was sent a conduct letter threatening to kick me out of the school my very last week of a bachelor's degree when I complained to the dean of the department. When I emailed the teacher, repeatedly, she said I insulted her by questioning her and my grades then became worse. I called student advising 5 times and was told to work it out myself since the school has no influence over individual instructors and how they grade or communicate. My 3.96 GPA tanked my very last week because of this class and I even received an academic warning letter from the dean of another department for the "tone" of my emails with the teacher.
All of this happened my last week of what was supposed to be a joyous time. The school never asked my side and didn't care that I tried to resolve the issue 5 times with their advisors prior to my "blowing" up in the last email with her. She was equally nasty but used a better writing style to communicate it to me. The bottom line is that I tried to get help starting in week 2 of the 10-week term and was told tough, take the grade and move on with life, despite its impact on my near perfect GPA.
My graduation will always be shadowed by the disgust of this event and the university's unwillingness to help. Do not enroll here! Once they have your money, you are stuck! I had numerous problems with financial aid as well. Idiots! I had to get an ombudsman to review my account 3 times in 1.5 years there because the financial aid people screwed my account up. All 3 times, the ombudsman found accounting errors to my benefit. Getting help and anyone to listen to you is impossible! I will never recommend this university to anyone, ever! I am not lazy either and had no, I mean zero difficulty with grades prior to this single lower level elective class! Disgusting that they blamed and threatened to suspend me my last week without ever asking my side of the events!. I am an honor student and graduate, summa cum laude.

Kaplan College, Palm Springs, CA medical assistant course - I attended Kaplan College from 6/12 to 02/12. I took out a personal loan of $8,900 as well as financial aid in the amount of $ 14,000.00 to retrain as a medical assistant. They assured me I would be employed when I finished their course. The teachers were rude and insensitive. One of them saying: "If you tell anyone you did not learn here, I will kill you" or " I hate you and I know where you live" or "I pass only students I like". There were, at times, more than 30 students to a class with standing room only. They had students in my own class helping the teacher to teach us when they were there to learn as well. The machines we needed to learn on were either broken or non-existent. Totally unacceptable. But I felt stuck and had to continue. They already had my money!
After the classroom course was completed, I was sent to a doctor's office, which I was told would hire me after my externship of 160 hours was over. I was very upset that they did not hire me and had no intention of bringing in new people. I was angry and disappointed that they had lied to me again. They had contacted me one time with a possible interview. I never heard from them again. I have spent the past several months looking for work and always get the same answer, "without one year previous work experience, we cannot hire you". Kaplan's counselors never mentioned this. I call them weekly about my plight and they just say to keep trying. It is causing me unbearable stress and frustration. I have student loans to pay and I can't qualify for work without a year's experience in a doctor's office. These people should be shut down and the money they have stolen returned to the students and the state!
They do not do what they promise to do. They are in it for the money and it is quite obvious that once they get it, you are just another money in a seat. I hope that someone out there can understand how devious and underhanded these schools are and do something to stop them from stealing from innocent people who are working hard to get an education while they are working hard to steal the government and people blind!

I have been a student with Kaplan University since the year 2008. I didn't have previous experience with higher education and online classes were definitely a new experience, but yet exciting. I was willing to learn and thought the best way to learn about higher education (the procedures in enrollment into classes and signing up for financial aid) was to let my Academic Adviser and Financial Aid Officer at the time walk me through the process, which they did. As the years went by, changes were made and I no longer had the same Academic Adviser nor the same Financial Aid Officer. I was told that students were now doing the jobs and they were in training, so be patient with them. I was, but the stress and suffering financially due to the loss of my husband and asking for hardship expense aid took a toll on me.
I had a very hard time receiving the money in the disbursement time frame and I do believe that all my disbursements were not issued to me. Adding to this problem, I received a document notice when checking to see if all my documents were updated and if anything new was posted as I was told to do when I started. This notice was for me to sign an MPN and I had no idea what they were talking about. I called financial aid and spoke to a trainee officer who stated that I was in my aid year and my funds had ran out due to taking 2 classes and receiving 6 credits. I now have to start paying $501.00 starting March 3, 2012 and thereafter until my classes were paid in full.
I spoke to an academic adviser who stated that I could have taken one class and my funds would have stretched further, but by the time I found all this out, it was too late to drop a class and I knew I could not afford $501.00, living on a disability check and no job. I then was told by financial aid, when I called them back for more options, that I could try for a loan with Sallie Mae and Wells Fargo but had to have a co-signer and be turned down before coming back to them and applying for a loan with them which would not be much. I gave this a try, but no success with a co-signer. I called back financial aid and asked what else could I do and I was told about the withdrawal, which I gave some thought before doing. In the meantime, Kaplan borrowed money in my name from Direct Loans (approximately $4000) and had started paying for classes started. How could they do this without my MPN?
I went ahead with the withdrawal because I did not want to go through the stress and strain of trying to figure out how I can pay the $501.00, which I just did not have. I am now stuck with owing Kaplan $2,151.77 and cannot receive my official transcript to enroll into another university. This has saddened me and the motivation and uplook I had from and for Kaplan has gone down the drain. It's so unfair and I want to know how I can get justice and receive what is owed to me, money borrowed in my name for my education! Thank you in advance for your help.

Also, they had a great job placement program that will help you find a job in no time.
When you start this program, they give you a lot of books that will be used throughout the program, but the thing is about 1/3 of the books were never used! About half the time I was there, I had 4 teachers because they didn't have a teacher assigned for the class. We did work that had nothing to do with medical billing and coding. And upon graduation, they were scrambling on where to place you for your internship site. After graduation, I talked to the people in the job placement department to get information about any job leads or anything that can help me get a job, but they never called. I e-mailed and called and still nothing. Their answer is the economy is bad and there is no job leads anywhere! Yet when I applied for that, I found by myself the employers would not accept this diploma because it was not a valid accredited degree. I am angry! How can this school still be opened and not penalized for lying and deceiving people that are trying to get an education?
I am also pissed that I have enrolled in a community college to pursue my education and I have to start all over because the classes are not accepted as this diploma is not recognized as accredited. Now, I have a huge debt, I have no job, and I have to start all over to get a degree that I want for a long time. Thanks to this school, I have wasted one year of my time, money, and life. This will probably sound like a broken record, but I am so furious over Kaplan and their billing habits that I have to do this. I was attending Kaplan last summer/fall (2011) for my master's degree when Hurricane Irene hit the east coast. Unfortunately, the hardest hit is the county where I currently teach. Our community college was used as a shelter for weeks and I had many students who had no place to live. I was volunteering at a local church helping with the coordination efforts of the Salvation Army, Red Cross, Baptist Men, etc. The Wednesday after Hurricane Irene left was the first night of class. I called on Friday to ask if I could withdraw from the class and what type of penalty would I incur. I was told there would be no penalty and it would be fine for me to withdraw. That, in fact, because I was only taking one class at a time, I would be unenrolled from the college. I did not like this, however, I had to accept what I was told.
Lo and behold, a month later, I received a phone call asking for the balance I owed. I didn't think I had a balance and had to repeatedly ask for an invoice. When I finally received one, it stated that I had a ledger balance due of $634 and a payment plan balance due of $834. I chose to pay the balance due because I was not on a payment plan. Since then, I have been continually harassed for payment of $200. I am called day and night, I am hung up on when I answer the phone and I generally talk with people I cannot understand nor do they have answers for the questions I ask. I have asked what the billing plan was and what the extra $200 is for. No one can explain it to me, other than to say that is what is on my ledger card. However, my ledger balance on the invoice stated I only owed $634.
Then I received an email from someone by the name of Emerson offering me a 50% discount on what I "owe". I emailed him daily for two weeks with no response. I then received another email a week later saying that Kaplan would be handing my "past due" amount over to a collection agency if I do not pay the full amount of $200 within 48 hours. My problem is that I do not believe I owe anything based on the invoice I received. I have even had some of the callers say that $634 was all that I did owe! I am frustrated and furious over the whole ordeal. This seems to be the norm for Kaplan and I feel very embarrassed that I was taken in by them. I, too, was told I had to get my application in quickly so I could begin the program. I was rushed into a decision and am very sorry I ever entered their classes.

Oh my God, all of these are the same experiences that I am currently having with Kaplan. When I decided to enroll with this school, I was already unemployed. I completed the process with financial aid department and they said that I have approval for the loans that will cover my education. At first, I paid what I could pay to pay off a $300 balance. Then in the next semester, their financial aid department said that I had a balance due to be refunded to me for $639. I called and I reviewed this with three different reps and they swore that I did not owe any monies and that my account was current. I told them I really want to make sure that if the money needs to stay on the account so that I do not owe a balance, then let's leave the money on the account. Kaplan still sent the check and then each new semester, the financial aid would send me a promissory note for smaller payment on monies past due. I have not signed any of the promissory notes after the first one. Nevertheless, somehow Kaplan has entered the promissory note in the file, saying that I have approved them, which I have not.
This is the second year that I have been at Kaplan and I have continuously received outrageous harassing telephone calls from Kaplan. I have explained, to them that I have no job and no money to pay on this bill. I am in the process of losing my home and I am currently moving into my vehicle to live at this point. The rep from Kaplan financial aid said to me, "Well, we are going to keep calling you until you pay this balance and if you do not clear the balance, Kaplan is going to lock you out of the class." I have done everything that I can do to work this problem out with Kaplan financial aid. The harassment has been a part of the stress and I have been put in the hospital with a mini stroke. The reps from Kaplan still calls the cell number. I answered the phone while I was in the hospital with mini stroke.
I told the rep that I am in the hospital and that I will have to talk about this later. They said to me, "Well, I need for you to tell me how you are going to pay this bill." I told them, "I couldn't give you what I do not have. I have tried to work with you on this and I do not understand why I owe more money every term." During the first year, it showed that Kaplan received $11,000 on my account but they have not been able to tell me where the funds are. All they will say to me is that they received the fund but cannot explain to me why the funds are not posted to my account. All that I know to do is to keep taking my classes until they kick me out. This has to be illegal action on behalf of Kaplan University.

While I only signed up for one loan through Citi Bank, I have now been told after they took my tax in 2012 that Kaplan had applied for 11, count them 11 loans, in my name totaling $30000.00, when I only got paperwork for one loan company in the amount of $15000.00. I went to school to better my life. Kaplan hasn't made it so. This is my biggest regret.

I am at my wits end with Kaplan University! I graduated from there in May of 2011. During the end of my program, I was blind-sided with a balance of over $10k. I was told at the time that my funds had run out and I was now responsible for the balance. Okay, fine. Maybe I had reached my limit. I was making small payments to them once a month, with 3-4x a day harassing calls.
Through the Financial Aid Ombudsman, I have recently found out that during my time at Kaplan, I had 4 different enrollments open. I also went to Kaplan for my AS, starting out in the criminal justice program later transferring to the Interdisciplinary studies program. I graduated in 2005 with no problems.
Skip ahead to 2008, I enroll in the BS of Health science program (not the advanced start). Later, I transferred to the Advanced Start BSHS program. These are the 4 enrollments I am told I had "open" because of these 4 enrollments I reached my loan limit. Because of this, I was told I could have been enrolled in more classes that originally planned for. **! Isn't that what financial aid advisors and academic advisors are there for, to advise students on their accounts and classes? I am also being told I requested $9,500 in educational loan expenses while enrolled at Kaplan. What is this?!
I noticed someone else mentioned on this board that they were told they had to sign a Kaplan payment plan promissory. I too was told I had to sign this. When I started dealing with all this, I contacted Kaplan to try and work it all out, that is when I was given the Kaplan payment plan, of $4,000+ a month. When I questioned this and said I couldn't do it, I was told I was required to sign it and send it back or I would be blocked from classes. That should have been a red flag right there. I have all the emails and documents of this, I have stopped communicating via phone because I want a paper trail of the ** they are pulling. I also received a call a few months ago from the financial aid department telling me that if I were to pay $6 or $7k of the $10k balance, they would take that and I wouldn't have a balance. Suspicious?! I'm not sure what else to do. I haven't gotten my diploma and now I cannot get my transcripts to enroll in grad school. I'm done with Kaplan. I just want them to go away. I started Kaplan University last year and was told that I have enough financial aid from to cover my classes until February 2012. Now I am in my last year at the school. I received a $2,025.00 balance because Kaplan failed to send information to Federal Financial Aid in a timely manner. Kaplan had to give the $2,025.00 back to Federal and charged the funds to me. Due to receiving this balance I cannot get my transcripts to apply to another school. Also, Kaplan sent me a promissory note for me to sign; but if I sign I would be agreeing to pay over $13,000 or $2200.00 each month until September 2012. I have told them time after time that I cannot afford such a bill and now I have collections contacting me at home. I am an A student and can't seem to get help from the school. I was told that I can be stopped from logging in to complete classes. So now I can't get my transcripts, I can't transfer to another school and I have this huge bill that I can't pay because they messed up. Please help me!

I completed my bachelor's degree with Kaplan, completely paid for by grants and student loans. I was very satisfied with Kaplan so I decided to continue with Kaplan to acquire my Master's degree. This is where the problems began.
I completed my first semester and went into my second semester. In the beginning of the 2nd semester, I didn't like the classes I was in and decided to withdraw within the first 10 days. I notified Kaplan I wanted to withdraw and received my withdrawal paperwork. Since my withdrawal was within 10 days, my student loans were sent back to the company, which was fine. However, Kaplan now says I owe over $4,000.00 for the semester. How can that be? I notified Kaplan of my withdrawal plans with Kaplan's time frame, which means I should not have to pay any money. I am not sure what to do. Not only does Kaplan say I owe them over $4,000.00, but they refuse to give me transcripts of my bachelor's degree which was completely paid for. I don't know what recourse I have to solve this problem. I would like to continue with my degree plan of Master's degree however with Kaplan holding my bachelor's degree hostage, I don't see how I can.

I graduated in July 2011 from Kaplan after being enrolled for 2 years to complete my BS in Psychology. I enjoyed the classes but repeatedly had issues with financial aid. On 2 occasions, Kaplan received overage on my aid and sent a stipend to me at my request. I then requested they not take more from financial aid than was necessary, so I didn't have to pay the interest on those funds. One time, they returned $334 to the student loans for overage. In my final term, I was told I owed $656 or I could not get my degree. I questioned the financial aid award letter I had received and why I owed anything. They gave me some excuse about the terms in the year and threatened that I could not graduate without payment. So, I submitted payment and made sure to tell them, I didn't expect any additional requests for money. I had a zero balance (which I made sure to copy from my accounts page) when I completed my final term.
I received my degree and everything was fine. Until Monday 1/30/12, I received a call from a collections agency informing me that I owed Kaplan $5,437. I thought it was a scam. I contacted Kaplan the next day and was told that my financial aid from 2010 had been returned to the lender. I asked why and they stated it was because I didn't qualify. Mind you, I received financial aid in 2009 from another institution and Kaplan, and had documentation showing where the funds were paid by my lender when I graduated. I was furious. I contacted my lender who stated they had not received a refund from Kaplan. Yesterday, I received a call from an Ombudsman at Kaplan stating that I had misunderstood my financial arrangements! I understood every financial award letter and my bank statements where Kaplan had been paid. I logged onto my account page, which I hadn't needed to do since graduation, and saw where in 10/6/2011, 3 different refunds had been made. On 12/16/2011, they turned my "case" over to collections, but not one email, phone call or letter of communication came from Kaplan. Apparently, this is happening a lot according to these other posts!
I printed my statement from Kaplan showing a zero balance. Today, I log in and it shows that I owe the $5,437 immediately. I'm sure this is going to ruin my credit if it's not paid. I am angry, feel taken advantage of, and feel something must be done. I wouldn't recommend Kaplan for dog catcher! I value my learning experience at Kaplan and know I worked very hard for a 4.0 GPA. My professors were knowledgeable about the content and I felt challenged in my studies. This ordeal with financial aid cheapens my experience and makes me feel as though my education with Kaplan was second class. I regret ever attending there. If I owe a debt, I pay it. I do not like the way this was handled and feel like I'm being bullied. As a professional 50 year old, I have experienced many things. But never anything remotely close to what this experience with Kaplan has created. Something needs to be done. Who can do it and How?

After 2 and half years of attending Kaplan University Online, I keep getting more and more dissatisfaction. The grading practices I have been told to forget about it, that no one will ever challenge this. However, what about the bigger picture. While the OIG is investigating and filing claims against this institution, I have been obligated to take two classes twice. That means that I have spent 8 months extra in school and had to paid thousands of dollars extra per class just because there is no one that challenges the unfair and illegal practices at this place.
I was told by the OIG to file a complaint but they cannot guarantee they will take the case if more other hundreds of students do not file complaints. Well I see here many complaints and many issues that could take this place down. I consider it not only an unfair grading system but the appeal process is not clear and have no say on how it is done. Therefore, it is a ripoff because they charge the class tuition again and again. Please take all this complaints to the attorney office at least in Florid. I went to Kaplan University for four years. The first two years were for my associate degree and then I enrolled for my bachelor's. I was an excellent student and I graduated with a 4.0 GPA. I was happy with the curriculum, but I had continual problems with financial aid. At least six times they messed up my account and I had to apply for private loans to cover the difference. At one point they sent the money in my tuition account in the form of two checks. I questioned why they had sent it to me and I was told to void the checks and send them back because I needed those funds. I got that straightened out and about a year later I graduated, which is when the real trouble started. When the grace period for my student loans came about, I discovered that I owed nearly three times as much as my financial aid statements reflected. I had bills with four different loan companies totaling nearly $60,000 and a payment total of $800 a month. Unfortunately I have not been able to find employment and I had to apply for deferment on all of my loans. This was just the beginning of my troubles however. Eight months after graduation I received a call from a debt collector saying that I owe Kaplan nearly $4,000 in unpaid tuition. I have never received a bill or any kind of notice from Kaplan.
When I graduated I had extra funds in my account and was sent a check from account closings that reflected the extra money. No one at the university seems to have a straight answer for me as to where the debt came from or why I was not contacted. At this point I have filed a dispute on the debt with the collector, the school and with all three credit reporting agencies. I have no idea what is going to happen though. I am worried about being sued when I am still unemployed and my previously perfect credit has now been severely tarnished. So far the consequences have included debt collectors calling me and major damage to my credit reports. I may be sued for the money, despite the fact that the university even seems unclear as to whether or not I actually owe it. Before this happened I was working to start a business and I can no longer get a business loan. I am also having trouble finding employment and the credit damage is making this even harder. In addition this debt is further inhibiting my ability to pay my student loans. What is worse is that I am seven months pregnant and I am now experiencing complications that my doctor says could be attributed to stress.

This school does not deserve a half star. I first enrolled at Kaplan for my Associates degree in 2005 and had a fairly pleasant experience. I decided to go back for my BS with Kaplan as well and all was good up until a few months before I was set to graduate. I began seeing a Kaplan balance in which I called numerous times about and kept getting the same answer, it was supposed to be taken care of. A month before graduation, my balance was still $8,000+. At this point I spoke with 8, yes 8, different people about this, the final answer was my financial aid had "run out" and I was now responsible for the balance. Funny thing about that is that I had actually called the bank that was handling all my student loans and they told me they had been sending checks to the University, which had been returned. I called Kaplan again and got the same run around; no one really knew what the problem was.
May 2011, I graduated. I had a $10,000+ balance! The last person I spoke with told me that they were running a "special" if I got a loan for $6,000 I could pay that much and the rest would be taken care of. **! They still call 2 or 3 times a day and I've gotten so sick of telling them I don’t have 10k. I stopped answering the calls. I don't know what to do anymore. Before my last term at Kaplan University, I contacted Kaplan about my financial aid situation. I asked them for a loan. The man stated that I could get a Kaplan loan if I applied for a loan and gave them to denials from a loan institution. I did all the things I was supposed to do. After turning in the loan information, I waited. No one ever contacted me and I weighed in my concerns. I was then contacted by an Ombudsman. I told her that I would need a loan for my last term since I was only taking 3 credits.
She stated to me that I did not need a loan. She said to correct one of my sheets of paper and to turn in an educational expense application. I told her that if I could not get a loan I could not finish school. I had to wait till I got a job so I could pay for the last term payment of $1300. I explained to her more than once the amount of credit hours I was going to have. She had my information right there and knew I only had one class to take. She also had my information about how many credit hours I had left to complete school. I filled out the paper work that she told me to. She stated that I was approved for $1994 for my first term in the year and an additional $1995 for the last term. I asked her how this was possible and she said it is because I changed the paper and accounts for funding were now based on yearly instead of by term.
Okay, so I got all the paper work and the money started coming. I received X amount of dollars. Then I find out that I did not get approved for any of the money. I went from a balance of $0 to $2800 because their institution sent back the money I was supposedly approved for. How is it that an employee there could lie and scam so much? Could it be possible this is how their company tells them to do when a students says they need a loan or want to take a leave because they can’t pay for the last term? I want my degree and the money taken off. If someone makes a mistake, then it is their responsibility to fix it. I did not want any money I could not pay, and I made this clear. Their ombudsman said it was mine and everything was approved even after the fact I only had 3 credit hours left. I left my trust in them so knowledgeable staff. I have tried to get this fixed and all I get is, "I am working on it."
After three years with this school, I passed my academics, I did my part. Now I want the degree I worked so hard for and I want my account cleared. Why should me and my family suffer for a mistake on their employees part?

"Word to the wise!" Unfortunately, I wasn't wise enough to identify the scandalous and unethical practices permitted by this organization. After being out of school for almost 10 years, I thought it was to my advantage to return to college and obtain a degree in a field I enjoyed. So I did a research to select a college that would be most beneficial and be of most impact for my career, Kaplan University.
Since October 2009, I've been attending Kaplan University and it has been a reoccurring issue or a lack of better term, nightmare, within the Financial Aid Department. In the beginning (first term) everything seemed to be alright, but thereafter everything went downhill! I requested a living expense to help offset income in need to support my living obligations, and was told that I needed to fill out an education expense form for review of my account and to see if I qualify. They stated if approved, it would be disbursed into three increments reflecting three terms in an academic year. The first disbursement was made and the remainder disbursements stopped until I had to make a call to the Financial Aid Department. After speaking with several different representatives (in which now constitutes more than what is in my personal phone contact list), it was finally resolved. Throughout the two years of attendance achieving scholar level academic (National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Dean’s List, President’s List and a 3.9 GPA) the processes within the Financial Aid Department have become worse. I have received other students financial documents on my account portal, emails addressed to other students, and inaccurate information pertaining to my account. In which leads me to believe that the Financial Aid Department is either mismanaged, unorganized or both!
Approaching is my final three weeks for the completion of my degree and they still don't have it right! As mentioned earlier, in reference to the education living expense, the Financial Aid Department has failed to give me my last disbursement. In fact, they stated that I wouldn't receive one. In efforts to gather an insight about my final disbursement, I called four different times to be told that I would receive one, but a new education expense form must be on file. I was definitely baffled behind the response, but I complied with their procedure. The initial calls began at the beginning of the term (week 1) of my final term about the final disbursement, for them to tell me in week 7 that I wouldn't be receiving an educational living expense. Very livid, I might say, but for the most part dissatisfied as to the way a large organization such as Kaplan University operates their business.
Assuredly, I'm not a rocket scientist but I do know of unjust and unlawful practices when I see them and they're all written over Kaplan University. For them to simply state that personal documents belonging to other students in my account portal isn't an issue, or that the information provided by their representatives never corresponding with each other is okay raises questions as to their educational accreditation.

The reason I enrolled in the pharmacy technician program was because I met the pharmtech director and he was very knowledgeable and seems to be very enthusiastic. Not only that, based on the students' feedback, the director is actually the reason why the program is thriving. We all love him and his students are really raving about how he inspires and teaches in the classroom, but he left for some reason(s) that Kaplan seems to be flip-flopping.
Now, the instructor they replaced him is a big joke. She does not know anything about pharmacology and pharmacy math nor does she have basic teaching skills! We found out that she didn't even go to pharmacy school herself. They got another instructor teaching pharmtech certification program and she is not even certified and also did not go to tech school!
Since our director left, this program is already a big mess. Most of the students now want to drop out because we are not learning anything at all. I am paying $15,000 to sit in a classroom where my instructor is very sarcastic and acts like a total Gestapo, a totally stark contrast over my former instructor! Now, all the students in the white module do not want to take pharmacy anymore.
Oh also, the new extern coordinator does not know where to place the externs! What a joke! When the former director was here, he always places the students and gets them hired too! That's why I enrolled in the program. I also hear a lot of complaints about the career services. They don't do anything to help place graduates. What I know as a fact is that our former program director was the one placing the tech grads to work, not career services.
The best thing that ever happened to Kaplan Vista was our former director, and now that he's gone, this school has gone down the dumps. Now, everyone here is really stupid! I am now going to be stuck with a $15,000 student loan for nothing, and I am now more scared than ever to go into my externship because I don't know anything. All I know about pharmacy was from when I had our director as the instructor. When he left, all classroom learning stopped. I don't know why they did this but they did: The timing of my withdrawal was mid-term. This means that I completed the first half of term with my classes paid for with my student loan money. When I withdrew, they sent back the unused portion and then decided to send back the first half (This half that had already been paid for the classes I'd taken, giving me a 0 balance). This means that I now owe the school almost $800 when they didn't have to send all the money back. This was spiteful and uncalled for.

I recently graduated from Kaplan University. I must say, I started out satisfied but earned my Bachelor's Degree on a sour note. The whole time I was a student at Kaplan University, I had to consistently call both financial aid and student accounts. There were always issues with the financial aid. If you ask me, I suspect a "cash-flow" issue on their part since they consistently pushed the financial aid deadlines earlier and earlier. I know people who went to other online academic institutions where the deadline was the same as the state schools. In 2004, when I started on my journey, the deadlines we're the same like other school (Red Flag Number One).
Over the years, I've had things happen to me such as layoffs and health issues which lead to further financial decay. Yes, I also had to retake some classes too. However, they are unable to provide me with sound explanations as to why I owe them $4,500.00. They told me to try to get other loans. I did, but got rejected due to credit issues as well as employment difficulties due to emotions within the economy. I held onto the letters of rejection, and they told me they had loans. It turns out that their loans are not loans. They are more like an installment plan on a 30 year mortgage for a house in Plano, Texas. I tried disputing it but was unsuccessful.
They sent me a contract on that installment plan. I read the "fine print" and it talked about "Binding Mandatory Arbitration". I did not sign the contract because I am anti-binding mandatory arbitration because those arbitrators take the corporations side more than they do the consumers side. That, to me, is not right. I am not waiving my legal rights as a consumer and getting railroaded. I hope I can find a good paying job so I can at least pay my $62,000 in loans that I owe money on as well as other bills I've sustained due to illness and under-earning jobs. Also, they don't deserve a star.

What I'm about to tell you blows my mind and maybe yours, too. This is what happened to me with Kaplan today:
Oh, please let me vent for a moment. My college sent me a bill for $6,900 for payment to get me through school till March 2012 with a repayment of $880 a month. I called them up to inquire. I explained this was never a pre-agreed arrangement. They know this. James, at the financial aid office, told me he knew. So, you think you can send me a bill when I'm working on getting my own funding. You, meaning the college Kaplan, with no notice to me and decide, "Hey, you now owe us even though you do not want it. We, Kaplan University, decided you (that would be me) do want it."
So, I sweetly explained that what I was about to say was not towards him (James), but the college institution of Kaplan University itself.
I know the law before I started school 3 years ago and now I have more insight. I'm going to slap a law suit on you so big it will make your heads swim. I'm also not the person who makes threats and I typically do not give warnings, however I feel that the sheep need more direction. I'm also the person who gets her orgasms by correcting the injustice. You (Kaplan University) cannot send me to collections or put anything on my credit just because you feel like it and you can't make or tell me to pay you when it was not agreed upon in a legal written contract beforehand.
What the school institution is doing is a seriously illegal practice and I'm going to make an example out of this school for doing such.
So James put me on hold to see if there was anything in writing. When really, he was so freaked out and because he had not been trained to handle my type of phone call. He simple placed me on hold for over 35 minutes. When he returned, I explained to him why he had to put me on hold. Explained I was not faulting him, just the institution (Kaplan University) that he works for. I told him (James) I would have a subpoena for all phone recordings (which they do) and take this to the Federal court pro se (meaning I'm the attorney, which I have a legal right to do). And anyone who has been on the other side of my stick can tell you, I am their worst nightmare. I've won before and I will win again, money hungry institution. Where in the ** do they get off? They seethe in a pool of greed.
James informed me that Kaplan University decided the following: I had 6 credits for the current class and just enough fund from the government to cover this cost. But Kaplan decided that $6,222 would be lent to me with a repayment of $800 a month. This would cover me through March 13, 2012. Even though with the funds, I had already covered this class in Latent Prints. They decided to toss in their own money and spread it out of the next three classes. If I fail to pay and even if I make a payment below the $800, Kaplan could block me from the class I'm currently in and then kick me out of school. Remember, I already had fund from the government to cover this class. Plus, if I do not make the payment a $100 a month, a fee will be applied on top of interest.
Remember, this was not a contractual agreement. Even if I do not sign it, I was told it was still going to happen against my will. This is rape on a level that leaves me speechless! I will not allow this to happen and won’t allow it to happen to anyone else.

I enrolled at Kaplan College for medical assistant. I took all my courses and passed all my courses with A's and B's. I was an honor roll student twice and passed all my skills to all my courses.
My first time on internship, I had a problem with the site and explained what happened to the school on that site. The school didn’t say anything, like they didn’t really care. So they made me go back to school for a month to redo my skills that I have already passed with A's and B’s from my courses before starting internship on another site.
I then went to that site but that site didn’t work out. They told my school I was asking too many questions and, as a student, that’s what you’re supposed to do in order to learn. They screwed up my hours also when I started so that I had to find my own site. And I did at this site.
When it came down to me having to do my comps, they’re supposed to grade your paper so, example if it was a procedure that was observed, that means they explain the procedure to you, watch how it’s done, perform it yourself if possible, then they grade you for it. After you show you understand well.
In order to graduate out of all the comps we had, we’re only allowed to miss eight. The site told my school I observed a procedure, but they never sat down and explained to me at all, and had me watch how to do it. They graded me for it. Gave me an F and because I failed that procedure they said took place, which didn’t, the school isn’t graduating me. When they called the site to ask if that took place, they said yes. I told the school repeatedly it didn’t, because if it did, I would be able to explain the process. And I can’t because it never took place.
When I asked the school to ask the site to let me come back so they can explain it to me then have me actually do the procedure for them to grade me, they said that they didn’t want to put the site in that position. But, they’re willing to let students that have finished they’re internship to go back to the sites and complete their hours, in order to graduate. But a student can’t go back to be graded legally.
To me, it’s like my grade was falsely documented. How can you grade a student for something that never took place or for something they never got to do? And I worked too hard for my diploma. That’s all I want, what I worked for. I don’t think it’s right. They said I failed academically. That’s not true. I passed all courses with honors. That’s far from failing academically. And they said there was nothing they could do and that they got to go with what the site says. Sounds like they just want to keep their contracts with the sites.
I thought that the school was there for the students. You would think a student isn’t going to make up and that they didn’t do something on their internship, if it wasn’t true. Kaplan doesn’t care about the students, in my opinion. If they did, they would listen when we talk.
I have no reason to lie about my situation. The things I had to go through. It’s my word against theirs and, of course, they’re going to make their self look good. But the bottom line is I was cheated out of my diploma. My grade on my internship was not documented to the truth. Don’t grade a student if the situation never took place. I think they wanted to get me finished and out.
I really would like for someone to help me because I want what I worked for, my diploma, and I deserve it. I got the skills and knowledge to proceed anywhere I go, but of course they’re going to say different. Plus I’ve even found out through other resources about the school not letting students finish internships. Consumer fraud and situations like me, there has got to be something that can be done. I think the school is a fake and they’re just trying to take my money. Then when a student tries to say something didn’t take place, they ignore and say there’s nothing they can do. But you’re not graduating an honor student with a GPA of 3.7, close to 4.0.
That just sounds very wrong and then they said, after I asked several times why they can’t make the arrangements for me to redo the comp that never took place and was falsely graded to me, they said they couldn’t put the practice in that situation. So circumstances like mine, we can’t go back to do things but students that left and finished already, they can put practices in those positions so they can go back to do two or three hours that they missed and they get to graduate, but I don’t. Something smells weird to me, altogether.
I don’t think I should have to enroll in another school to get my diploma. Go to another school for what I already have done would not be right because of what Kaplan did to me.

I completed my AA in Interior Design at Kaplan Sacramento CA. As the program was finishing off, they were deciding to get rid of the program. The whole program failed us as students. They rushed us through courses. They didn’t provide books that we paid for. And they completely ripped us off of classes that were important to, such as AutoCAD. They also failed to set us up with proper intern hours as promised.

I was a student from 2007 to 2010. I was suspended because I failed a class several times, it was a web development class. I could not afford buying the program that I needed to actually develop the website so I was using the free stuff online. So my last semester was Sept 2010. I was told I needed to go take the class somewhere else and then I'd be accepted back at Kaplan. I did not find another school that was offering that same class, so I decided to take a regular class at my local college.
I then was told I had a stipend of $500 dollars; So I said good, I'll just send that back to the loan I got. Then I got a check in the mail for 2,400 dollars. I was going to return it to the financial institution that gave me the student loans. But at that time, I had household bills and decided to keep the money to pay those bills because I took into consideration that it was my money anyways since it was a student loan. So I have been getting nasty calls from Kaplan telling me I have been sent to collections and I need to pay that money back. I don't have the money to send back to them. I called a few times and no one there was able to tell me a single thing because they have no clue on what they were doing.
I am trying to pay back but since they told me that they sent that check to the financial institution, I called the financial institution and they never received a check back from Kaplan. Kaplan employees don't know what they were doing and no one was able to help me. I am now blocked from continuing my education because they are and won't release my transcripts. I want to go somewhere else but that would mean I have to start from zero again. I was supposed to graduate already from Kaplan, but they are blocking me from continuing with my education because no one there was able to help me and no one will release my transcript so I can continue elsewhere.
I am very upset about this and not only am I with no degree, but I'm nearly $50,000 dollars worth of student loans. This has been a total nightmare. I've been a student all my life but not until I started with Kaplan I got into a financial abyss because I owe a lot of money. I'm a responsible person, but how can I start paying if I don't have a good paying job? I would like to know how I can get help with getting my transcripts from these people. It is not my fault that they are a bunch of incompetent people.

My complaint starts after I withdrew from one of my classes. I was almost done pursuing my Associate's degree in Accounting when all of this occurred. I had wanted to take a break...just 10 weeks off to clear my head because things at work had been extremely stressful, they didn't want to let me do that and I was enrolled in my next classes. The 2 classes I was enrolled in required quite a bit of concentration (I was a mostly A student and wanted to keep it that way. I graduated with a 3.86 GPA) that I did not have to spare at the moment so I dropped the class that applied to me the least; Marketing. I dropped this class on the 10th day of the course. My academic advisor told me that I needed to speak with financial aid and he transferred me over. The person I spoke to then told me that everything would be alright because I was going to take 3 classes the next term (the class I dropped, my last elective, and my capstone). I asked him, "So I don't need to worry about anything?" he said, "No, that it would all equal out and there would be no additional charge."
When I enrolled into my last classes (the last 3 I needed to graduate) I was shocked to find that they were saying I had a balance due. I wanted to know what it was for and they told me it was for the Marketing class I had dropped ($1855.00). I went over the conversation I had had with the last person I spoke to and the new person told me that he was mistaken, that it didn't work that way. I wanted to know how that was my fault. Especially since nobody had contacted me to let me know. She said she would look into everything and get back with me and I told her that I didn't have time to deal with any of this right now that after I finished school I would deal with all of it.
When I completed my courses I then went back to deal with all of this, and I spoke to several people trying to get this cleared up. I was told first that I needed to fill out a refund form, I asked them to send it to me. After not receiving it, I called back. This time I was told well it didn't matter because I wasn't entitled to any refund. After that conversation I printed and reread the Kaplan student handbook and what I found was that while I was not entitled to a 100% refund I was only responsible for 50% of the class fee ($927.50). On page 30, Dropping or Adding Courses, it states, "The following guidelines apply to students who drop a course but remain enrolled in their program of study", this is me, I dropped a class but remained enrolled. It then goes on to say, "Students who drop a course beyond the first 7 calendar days are subject to the Kaplan University Refund Policy."
Under this section of the handbook it states that it is the student's responsibility to determine their financial obligations by contacting the financial aid office. I did this, I was told that I didn't owe anything and that there would not be any additional charges for what I was doing. On page 38 of the University Catalog, under Refund Policy, Dropping courses, you will again find the same thing as stated above. On page 39, Withdrawal after commencement of classes, it states, "The effective withdrawal date for a student shall be when any of the following occur". It then goes on to list the occurrences, mine happens to be number one, "The date that the student notifies the University of withdrawal." I have been told that because I remained enrolled in one of the classes that term, I am 100% responsible for the course I dropped. According to their own policies, that is not the case.
After trying unsuccessfully to clear this matter up with Kaplan, they contacted me to tell me that I either pay the entire amount due or they were going to send me to collections. I told them that I did not have the money to pay the full balance due and asked if they would be willing to settle for making payment arrangements on half of the balance due (the half I figured I owed them). They said they could not do that and the bill was sent to collections. When the collection agency contacted me I told them everything that had happened and faxed them the proof I had (I have the Kaplan University Student Catalog that backs up my claim on pages 30, 38, and 39, I had a copy of a student grievance form I had filed (and never had responded to) with Kaplan, the fax transmittal showing the date the grievance was sent, and a copy of an email I had sent my Marketing instructor the day that I withdrew from his class. I also gave them a break down (because the Student Catalog goes by percentages) each term is 10 weeks long so 10 weeks times 7 days is 70 days. 25% would have been 17.50 days, I first emailed my instructor and my academic advisor with my intent to drop the class on the 19th of June (term started June 9th) this is 10 days into the term. I was officially dropped from the class on the 21st of June (12 days into the term).

Kaplan University mishandled my financial aid processing. Additionally, they did not advise me that I would exhaust my financial aid if I accepted the stipend checks. Over the past few months, I was lied to and misled about my situation. This resulted in a balance from two years prior, another balance of $339.00 after the financial aid packing was re-done. And now a new-found debt that has a new balance of $880.00. Also, in order for me to complete my degree which is two semesters away, I would have to pay over $4000.00 ($541.00 a month).
My classes suffered and now I am in debt to Kaplan for over $880.00. I call and beg someone to please resolve this.

I looked into getting a degree in network administration and was told that they had the right course for me. So I signed up and attended online for two years. During that time, I questioned them on some of the course and whether or not these classes are what I needed. I was constantly assured that the head of the dept. has put together exactly what courses I needed. So I went with the counselor's advice and continued on. Well I finally finished and got my associates degree as a network administrator. Then I was told it would be wise to continue on into the bachelor's program and I decided to do just that. But after another few classes, I again questioned the courses that were being offered.
This time I had gone out and started looking into jobs, but once I read at least 6 different companies' requirements for the position I found that Kaplan's program barely touched the surface of these requirements. Then when I talked to a counselor, they told me this is how the program works. I paid lots of money with student loans for something that is totally worthless. Most companies want certifications on most operating systems, which Kaplan doesn't even talk about. I feel that I have been misled and they shouldn't have done that. With that, I have dropped out of the program. I also feel that they should refund the money because of the fact that they did not meet their part of the bargain by giving me an education that would have at least given me a chance at a job. My grades where a 3.0 so it's not like I wasn't doing the work. The economic damage is that all these loans are now due. I finally found a job and I am just starting to bring myself and family out of the gutter. My thought was that while unemployed I could get reeducated and earn a decent wage so that I could pay everything back, but I have gotten nothing except a huge debt.

In effort to acknowledge problematic financial responsibility and dissatisfaction, lack of communication, and failure by resistance and misguidance to reach out to an authoritative figure, I'm writing in complaint of my current university, Kaplan.
As an active student of Kaplan University, I've overcome many hurdles during my degree plan, not to be confused with my actual education. More recent, and cutting to the chase, I was recently forced to make a sizable, out of pocket cash payment to Kaplan due to their specific negligence in maintaining my financial aid and unswerving lack of communication regarding funds available. These events seem to be directly compounded by structure or plateau of empowerment the University maintains amongst its employee's and their policy upon handling (at minimum) relative and necessity communication with their students.
Kaplan University applies centralized, yet basic, financial aid distribution payout information on their student specific website that offers a far less than perfect match to what is actually occurring in the students' financial world. On 12/14/2010, I received a "stipend" check from Kaplan in the amount of $200.00. I deposited the check and applied to household bills that have been lacking. On 12/30/2010, I received another "stipend" check in the amount of $1381.00. Similarly, the appreciated educational expense compensation was distributed to household bills and appeared to make life a little easier for that time. Interestingly, and unbeknownst to me, it led to a greater deficit.
In mid January (well short of 30 days since I received any overcompensation), I was contacted by Kaplan University with respect to, not only a delinquency in an un-negotiated or unrepresented monthly payment, but an overdue status that could block or suspend me from my on-going education. I (re)educated this representative with the concerns and agreement reached when I signed on, that I would return to college for my Bachelor's degree, but I could not afford an out of pocket expense. Ultimately, this didn't matter. Kaplan wasn't interested in prior agreements or arrangements, only the monies to compensate their mishandling of funds.
Kaplan astonishingly distributed their collection calls up to four or five times a day; fragmented by numerous hang up calls and disconnects. Eventually I found about three employees who admitted Kaplan's pattern in associating similar attributes to other students who were [currently] encountering comparable problems. But learning and acknowledging that didn't stop calls or the delivery. Their actions continued for months.
Eventually, I opted to extend my education in order to receive enough financial aid monies to cover Kaplan University's mis-distribution and misrepresentation of my own financial aid. My decision was based on knowing the harassment would not end and I only had three classes left. Comparatively, Kaplan was not very ethical in portraying their ability to maintain [thousands of] students' incoming funds or student notifications as it relates to long term financial responsibility. Relatively speaking, Kaplan left me with no alternatives. In any event, and with the extension of my program, it allotted for additional funds to be entered into my financial aid. Kaplan verbally agreed on a recorded telephone call to accept the next stipend check as payment. However, with that agreement I neglected to get them to agree to stop calling me.
Nevertheless, I called Kaplan University once I received the check, but couldn't wait ten days for the check to clear. Kaplan maintained that a minimum payment was needed right there and then. When I refused, they threatened another block/suspension, but wouldn't directly advise me when the block/suspension would apply, foregoing any additional financial distress or concern in my household. After the check cleared my bank account, I made the payment of $1821.00 to cover Kaplan just as I'd promised. I also snail mailed them a letter regarding this financial aid disturbance. Instead of recognizing their wrong doings, I was emailed a letter thanking me for bringing my account current and choosing and continuing my education with Kaplan. Later, I was even emailed a request to fill out a Kaplan success survey story for their personal use.
My complaint: Kaplan University maintains no attributable outward responsibility, insight regarding research and resolve, and compromise in light of their own financial misconduct. Kaplan University has failed in communication and in real time to provide reliable distribution of government funding and with proper direction or insight of excessive funds; thus causing a ripple effect of financial, home life, and work related strain. Kaplan University's actions in restraining me from gaining direct knowledge of the financial aspects of my education, in combination to disassociating me from elevated resolve great and extended the intensity of the issue, therefore overlapping into my work life. Kaplan University lacks the ability to properly notate and maintain agreements to my education as related to policy in recording each call. Kaplan University is without proper self, hired, or governmental discipline. I should not be afforded their mistakes.

I've had nothing but problems with this school from the beginning. Most of the instructors are inexperienced beyond belief! I spent most of the first 2 modules watching movies or having "free time". The Financial department would receive my payments and never informed me that I had a stipend left. When I asked why they had been holding my funds, they told me that they would just roll over the extra amount for the next payment unless I requested that I wanted it. When the program was paid in full they still kept the difference until I demanded the difference or threatened to report them.
Then they would take another 2 to 3 weeks to distribute my check to me. Several students said they never received anything. When we moved to the laboratory areas a few months into the program, we found out that they are extremely dirty with band-aid wrappers and thermometer covers strewn across the floor regularly. A couple of times there was even a blood vial and bloody cotton balls on the floor. Labs were sometimes done at the student’s seat and never sanitized after unless I took the initiative to do it. Most students never did. When it came the time for externship I was sent to a rundown address with trash strewn across the front sidewalk and boarded up buildings on each side. We had been told by the Medical Assistant chairperson that if we maintained perfect attendance and grades (both of which I did) that we would be placed at an excellent site. Nothing but lies!
When I refused to go to the site they sent me to the director of Career Services got angry and has refused to help me and has also directed the other Career Services people not to help me. When I tried to contact the Interim Executive Director, all he will tell me is that they are still looking but if they don't find me a site in 10 days then I will be dropped from the program. This kind of service is typical according to accounts from other students that I've heard. It's sad and disgusting that this school will willingly accept funds from students, most who are low-income, and turn around and screw them over like this. They need to be exposed for their deceptive practices and be put out of business. They are nothing but predators and their victims are people who can't afford to be put through the ringer like they do. Please don't even consider attending this school as it is a waste of time and money!

I have been attending this online College since 2009. I have always had problems with the correct dates on financial aide dept not disbursing the correct amount or on time. They will constantly reject paper work as a means to hold onto disbursements. But, this time, they have begun to get even worse with trying to get money from the students.
Then I began noticing discrepancies in my grades and their way of grading. Work I turned in had been deleted or turned up missing. This is causing real problems with my grades. I have been an high B student most of my time at Kaplan, including being on the presidents list and dean's list. I have complained to the professors about the problems and I also began wondering is this to get me to take more classes instead of completing my degree as scheduled.
This school is becoming very shady, by changing grades and I really need to know who to contact to hold them accountable. Notifying the school has not worked so far, they just ignore the complaints, they keep changing information using the excuse they are making upgrades.

I was a previous student since 2009 until two weeks ago in 2011. I informed them that I would be in court due to traumatic events that occurred with my daughters (molestation case); and I would not be able to log in and would do my work in bulk. I was advised that they understood and this would be okay. However, they disenrolled me and told me I had a balance since 2009 that no one ever made me aware of until after I was disenrolled.
I was told if I was still a student they could have provided me with additional financial aid. I applied for two loans from outside companies in which I was denied. I was told once they received those denials they would consider me for in house financing. However, following those procedures I was told I did not qualify because the denial offered me to resubmit with a co-signer in which I do not have the access to. The bottom line is this school just wants to get money out of individuals instead of helping them. I just received an email in which I save from Stafford loans informing me of their recent payment to Kaplan University for my tuition but Kaplan has not mentioned that.
They have been keeping my stipends without proper authorization from me. I filled out a form which clearly stating my decision in them not doing so. They are crooked, do not keep sufficient records, and continually try to solicit extra funds from students without proper details and information as to why they are doing so. I find it quite odd that Kaplan University waited two years later to inform me of a balance only after they disenrolled me. I wish I would have known ahead of time how many complaints they have against them. In addition to these complaints, there is a petition being signed to have them shut down for not keeping sufficient, accurate, and current records. This school should provide degrees in con artistry and scams because that is just what they are.

I have an issue which I really need some help on. I attend Kaplan University and have not going on 3 years. Everything was fine until last week. I had a balance to pay the school roughly $300 dollars which was no big deal. The week after I got a call from the school, the billing center said I owed $2,789.00 and she asked if I was read to pay. I explained to her that I have no idea where that amount came from, that I'll call her back, and that I am calling the financial aid department. She insisted that I pay at that moment, so I finally got off the phone with her.
Then, when I called financial aid, they said that a Pell Grant was refunded back to FASFA due to them having an audit sometime back in late October. The Pell Grant that was refunded, she said, was in the year of 2008 to 2009. That was 3 years ago. I said, "Really? Is this a joke?" I told her that I was more than eligible that year because I was not even working. She said that was not the issue and the issue was that they submitted a form late, but at the time this happened, FASFA and the school approved it. Not 3 years later, this big amount comes out from nowhere and this Pell Grant was refunded.
I spoke to 6 people in billing and 1 supervisor and all said that they are sorry that this has happened and even admitted that whoever dealt with the form was at fault, but added that if I do not pay this amount to them, they will not allow me to graduate. I called FASFA and they said that they can't go back that far to see any information. I told them that they can go back that far to take the money back, but they say they can't help me.
I do not know where else to turn to but to a lawyer. I have the money to pay them as of now but that is not the point. My point is that they messed something up and want me to pay for their mistake. I even told them that they just kept saying sorry to me. All their conversations are recorded and noted in their systems. Please help me if you can. Thanks.

In 2010, my daughter enrolled in Kaplan College (Indy). I was so proud of her that after struggling in high school, she completely turned it around. I went to the first meeting with her at Kaplan, and it sounded great--all the hype of having a great career in the medical field and the fact it only took 1 and 1/2 year to complete. It was all so great.
As time went on, we were informed that in order for her to graduate, she must pay upfront a extremely large sum of money before externship or she won't graduate. She was pulled out of class countless times and threatened she would be kicked out of school if she don't pay up. What made me so angry is they said to her "We can't wait for your mommy to pay." They made her so upset she would cry to me on the phone. But despite all that, she continued to do very well.
When we went to the first meeting, it was my understanding that payments were not due till after grad, but in fact, that was wrong. They also made us believe she could go to another school and transfer her credits, but later, we found out that credits from Kaplan are not accepted--she will basically have to start over to get a degree in her field.
As a parent, I feel bad for not investigating this before she became 15 grand in debt. The bad part is when all is said and done, she will only have a certificate of completion, not a degree. There was a couple other problems she encountered with the fact she is on the third teacher of the same class. I don't know all the problems with that.
I just wish something could be done to stop them from misleading all the people that are trying to better their selves by getting what they think is a good education and later finding out all the downfalls when it's too late. There are a ton of things I found on the internet with the same problems. I wish I would have found them sooner.

I have been with Kaplan since 2008 and paid very little out of pocket, because I have no job and was getting unemployment. Now as of this last year, 2010, they have told me I owe more than $5,000 to them. And my finances went from getting unemployment to getting nothing. And I was told my credits would cover any expenses and I would not have to pay them anything out of pocket. Now they have blocked me. I cannot finish my degree because they want a payment of $618.00. I do not even make that much a month. I barely am living on $800.00 a month to pay my rent, lights, internet, and I get food stamps. I asked them how I owe the money. They just told me this is what I owe. They sent me a ledger card with no explanation. It went from owing nothing to owing over $5,000, which I do not have and they know it.

I just graduated from Kaplan with a Bachelor in Accounting. For the past few months, I have had many problems with financial aid stating that I owed money from 2008 and 2009 and had to take a loan to pay them. Then I came to find out that it was not necessary because my financial aid was more than sufficient to cover my classes, to mention that three (3) times they sent me reimbursement due to excess in my financial aid. I came to find out in December that I had a excess of $2,024 and now they told me it was from my 2007 balance and it has been return to the lender. I was told that once graduated I would be eligible to sit for my CPA and that's not what the State of Florida DBPR said, I need approximately 40 semester hours to be eligible. I am not working in the accounting field and now I have a staggering student loan in the amount of $51K.

I was a student at Kaplan College and I feel like this school needs to be shut down. First thing is that they give you all these books that you pay for and we only use half of these books. Secondly, when I had signed up, they told me that it was an accredited school and I can transfer my credits to other schools if I wanted to pursue an associate degree. I recently signed up at Santa Barbara City College. They cannot accept my credits because Kaplan credits don't count. Kaplan's accreditation is not valid. Now Kaplan says that after internship they can help with job placement. Well, I have called them so many times. They only say that they will call me back to schedule something and they never do. I was almost a 4.0 GPA student. I feel like this school was a waste of time and money, because nobody in this school is helping anyone. Now, I have a loan that I am having trouble paying back. I have no job and I'm starting all over in another school. I received no help from a school that promises to help find a job.

I took what I thought was a Leave of Absence because of funds not being available. I spoke with financial aide, Juanot ** who told me I did not have enough to go to school. I logged into my financial aid account online and the school charged me full price, saying I attend classes since I logged into financial aid. I contacted Juanita ** back who then informed me that the school should have told me and locked me out. The school as of today’s date refuses to provide me something showing I attended classes. They keep referring me to collections. I am unable to get a copy of transcript, annoying collection calls, and needless stress in enrolling in another school.

Kaplan University Financial Aid/Business Office is out of compliance while committing fraud and misappropriation of funds. The majority of State Universities release refunds to their students 2 weeks before classes start or 2 weeks after school starts. State Universities also post disbursement dates on their website validating the dates that refunds will be disbursed to their students. Many private online/community colleges universities are under the assumption that they are not required to follow the state and federal guidelines.
I am a graduate student in my 6th term with a 4.0 GPA at Kaplan University. Each term is 10 weeks long; however, Kaplan feels that they do not have to issue stipend checks from Direct Loans until the 8th-10th week of the term. Expense Loans are designed to assist students with living expenses during a designated term. However, at Kaplan, loans taken out by students are assisting the university or the Washington Post with their expenses which is fraud and misappropriation of funds.

I am an online student at Kaplan University. This is my last set of classes and when I enrolled, I signed a form stating that if I had any funds left over they were to be refunded to me. I called earlier in the month and I was told that refunds are sent out 10 days after classes are paid for. My statement said that my classes were paid for on November 23, 2010. When I did not receive my refund, I called back about 10 days later. On December 16, 2010, I spoke to Winnie and she told me that my funds were supposed to be sent to me on December 6, 2010. I asked for her supervisor and Mr. Celli spoke to me and assured me that they would be sent to me that day. The problem is I had a balance of $856.33 in my account and I only received $57.33. I was a student back in 2007, there was a balance in my account and I noticed the school took an administration fee of $100.00 and sent the other $37.00 back to financial aid. I do not want the school to take money that dose not belong to them.

I am a 3rd year student, who receives Financial Aid. I was contacted on November 30th, 2010, by email because my financial aid had changed. Apparently, I am not receiving enough because I am taking courses which are 6 credits instead of 5. I registered for my courses in advance of my Financial Aid, because this happened in December of 09 as well. Where oh you have a balance due because you took a 6 credit course instead of 5. When this is the only option.
I am find with having to pay extra money, though I do think that the government is being taken. What I have a problem with is my due date went from the 15th of each month to the 1st - with only a 2 day notice. I received the email on the 30th of Nov. and needed to come up with the necessary payment by the first of December. Never did I receive a letter, email or phone call from them regarding this change prior to Nov 30th.
I have sent out emails and called them no response. Every time I call them they have told me that they cannot change the due date, this is a campus wide change all payments are due on the 1st of the month (lie I have spoken with other students, there payment dates have not changed). Furthermore, I am paid every two weeks. My monthly bill payments cannot just be changed such as rent and car insurance and utilities. What am I suppose to do call them and say my student loan payment is much more important then Rent, Car Insurance, heating?
My last conversion with the Financial Aid department today - was well I guess you make the payment late and hopefully you will not get locked out of the class for late payment! They refuse to talk or work with me.

I would like to file a complaint against Kaplan College Online. I have several different situations concerning my daughter that has occurred and would like to see if others have encountered similar situations. Let me start with the "first situation"; when my daughter applied to Kaplan College they offered a degree in Travel and Hospitality that wasn't going to start until June of 08 if I am not mistaken.
The adviser talked my daughter into taking two classes and stated that they would be counted towards her degree plan. She took the classes and guess what? They didn't carry over. So there were two classes that she didn't need that she got charged for.
The "second situation" that occurred was while in a class doing her class work, she got locked out. She called the school only to find out they had dismissed her saying that he grade point average was too low. When I got on the phone and spoke to the administration they saw that her GPA hadn't fallen below and she shouldn't have been dismissed. But, she still had to file an appeal. This took place in May of 2010 and they stated to her that it could take 12 weeks to get an answer.
"Situation Three" While she kept calling to find out if they had heard anything about her appeal, she found out they no longer offer the class Travel and Hospitality so now they were going to have to change her degree plan to Business Management. Keep in mind at this point she only had 20 weeks until graduation for her Associates.
"Situation Four" Here it is, Dec 2,2010 and she just found out that the committee approved her to come back to school with one hitch, no financial aid which she had been getting from the start. She called the banks who handle her loans and they said everything is fine on their end and all paperwork is done. It is the school that needs to approve the loans as she has already been approved.
As I see it, Kaplan has made many mistakes against their favor in this particular situation. There is something not very right going on with this school's online business practices.

I went to go back to start classes and redo my financial paperwork and they said that they were not going to allow me to re enroll in classes and I asked why, the Dean told me to write a letter as to why I felt I should be allowed to return and what made me leave Kaplan anyway. I wrote the letter, prepared for the meeting with the Dean and the re entry staff and they decided that it would not be in my best interest to continue my education at Kaplan, now I am stuck with student loans for an education that I can’t even complete, I only had six classes left. Now I have to start all over in my education and I still owe for the mess at Kaplan, how is this fair?

Every time, I call pertaining to my account I am being told several different things. I contact the registrar department to request a form that I was informed I needed in order to qualify to attend graduation on Feb 5, 2011. While speaking to the registrar specialist, she was so rude and short, I was trying to explain the form I was speaking of and what I was informed to do. The specialist would not allow me to talk. She cut me off and eventually disconnected the call when I told her to please be respectful and acknowledge that I am paying my money to attend the school, that it is her job to be patient Once I said that she sucked her teeth and then hung up the phone. I then called directly back and was transferred to her department again, hoping I would have better luck with someone else and the other staff member must have been next to her because as soon as I said my name, she hung up on me again.
This happened 3 additional times but faint laughs or silence, or just a pick up and no answer then hangup. Now, I thought maybe I am just going crazy, it could be something wrong with the phone, so I asked a tier 1 academic adviser to please stay on the phone with me to see if they do it again, and sure enough it happened again, but a male answered and he hung up the phone for the 5th and final time. The academic adviser apologized and then gave me the direct number, she explained that they are in a different department/location and there is no way for her to escalate the problem to their supervisor. So I called directly to the registrar department from the main number given and requested to speak with the supervisor. I was connected and she too was just as nasty and rude. Before I could say anything, she already knew who I was (the agent must have told her) and she said that she informed the staff members to hang up on me because I was being argumentative.
But I wasn't. I was trying to get my questions out and the staff member was assuming what my questions were and answering them before I could even finish. I tried to explain to her what I happened and she cut me off and said okay, well what do you want now? ? I asked to speak with her manager and I wanted them to pull the conversation recording and she stated that they don't tape it so I am out of luck. I was so hurt and upset, I cried.
Here it is, I am paying so much money to this school and I am trying to keep up. Finally, I am towards the end and they treat me like I am nothing because I am getting an online degree. I asked to have her manager's name and address and she would not give it to me. After I asked it several different ways, and stating that she is denying me the right to contact her direct supervisor, she then provided me with the information. I informed her that I would be writing a letter to her boss about my experience and she stated to me that I would have to address the letter to her, then she would send it to her manager. I had to tell her that I was recording our conversation for documentation purposes, then she gave all the information needed.
All I wanted was someone to help me, and for a supervisor to take control of the situation. She admitted that she overheard what the staff was doing and hears her employee's responses to me but felt that I was asking her the same questions over and over. For the life of me, I cannot understand why a supervisor would not take over the phone and handle the situation before they advise several employees to hang up on students who are paying their salaries.

I began the enrollment process in June of 2009 and DeAnte ** was the person who I dealt with. He said he was a KU advisor. I was active duty at the time and had not attended online college before. So DeAnte walked me through the financial and enrollment portions, which turned out to be all wrong. The financial part he had me fill out in GoArmyEd was for National Guard members, so it got denied. Then I received an email stating the classes I was taking were not the right ones.
By now it is July 09, so I enroll into new classes and am in touch with the Education Office in Ft. Riley. All this is by phone, email and fax. Ms. M. at the Education office has me drop both the classes and reenroll in them. Originally, they were both to start the end of July. After reenrolling, one began the end of July and the other the end of August. I log on to the Kaplan site to begin my first online course; both of my classes are appearing, so I log in to both to see what they are all about.
Then I start with my class that began in July and I am doing very well and can't wait for my next class to start in August. So I logged into my August class to see what it was going to be like and noticed it said it began in July; so I emailed the professor and told him I had dropped the July class but was enrolled in the August class. He emailed me back and said. 'Thank You.’
I thought the class would just roll over to the next class when mine was supposed to start. But the day my class was supposed to start it did not roll over, so I called DeAnte and left a message and also faxed him the form about my two dropped classes. I printed the form off of GoArmyEd. Every time I would call Kaplan, I would get voicemail and Tatyana would try to call me before 5 pm. I specifically said to call after 5 because I was not available because of my job with the military. I finally spoke with Tatyana and she took the information. Then I received a bill in the mail for one of the classes I dropped. The class that I had originally was supposed to start in July 09 and appeared on the screen. But it was not charged with the others. It is now October and I file a complaint with GoArmyEd and I continue to check with them to see what has come of it. Finally, in February 2010 they get a response from Kaplan stating that I did not drop the class and I owe them $825.00.
I call the Education Office and all they have on file is what they paid out and said they don't pay for dropped classes. I file a complaint with the Inspector General of Education in D.C. and didn't receive a response. I file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau in Florida and Kaplan states that I did not inform them that I dropped the class. If that is the case, why am I paying for only one class and not 3? Also, because I logged in, I apparently attended class even though I emailed the professor. So now I come to you asking for help to resolve this.
I retired from the Army with plans on attending a local university but could not enroll because Kaplan says I owe them $825.00 and will not send the transcript until it is paid. Kaplan also gave me an 'F' for the dropped class. I was and still am a soldier and I did all the right things to try to attend school. The Army paid 100% of my education. I would not put myself in the position to have to pay out of pocket. I have spent an enormous amount of time trying to figure out how to resolve this. I want Kaplan University to admit they were wrong and place the class as a drop, change the 'F' to a drop and not charge me the $825 and pay for my semesters of college that I have not been able to attend up to the point this is resolved.

First of all, this school will not tell you that you can apply for an assistant living loan. I had to find out from another student and when you ask about it, they act as if you have just assaulted them. I applied on June 21, 2010; I still have the paper work. Reese told me that I would get it on August 9, 2010 but when that date came (I went to the business office to get it), they said that I was not getting it because it had been rejected.
I asked why I was not contacted of the situation and she told me to talk to the financial aide. I then talked to Reese and she said that someone didn't submit the applications right and this campus was not the only one effected by this. So she would contact someone, see what was going on, and advised me to come back in a week.
After a week, she said that they are working on them and there was nothing she could do. She couldn't give me a date or an estimated date. I asked for the number to call so that I could check on my money. She said that she could not give it to me so I asked for an email address. She told me that she could give that to me. I went to the president after getting the run-around so many times and he said that he would look into it and call me back.
When he called me, he told me that my money would be broken down in three stipends, something that the financial aide had feel to tell me. I asked him if I could get it in one check and he said, "No, that's the way it was," and he couldn't do anything about it. He also said that I should get one of them in a week or he would go to the bank and give me the money himself.
I did get it after all that in a week, like he said. I supposed to have gotten a second check on October 18, 2010 and today is October 21, 2010. But they are starting to give me the run-around again. I just hope that it doesn't take as long as it did the last time. By the way, the financial aide lady (Reese) that I was working with, no longer works there anymore.

My experiences with Kaplan University are these. I was wrongfully kicked out of school due to the fact I brought a defective required computer program to light. It was for a Math class, which I was not thrilled to take in the first place. I worked the problems contained therein and in one of those particular problems the program said I got the wrong answer, though the answer I got was the same as the right answer.
I spoke to my professor and as I thought she would, said it was presented wrong, thus was obviously not the case. A few days later I received in my student email a written warning for my conduct. In that letter I will cite a portion of the rule which was responded to by myself in stern fashion. "Kaplan University requires its students to conduct themselves in accordance with the standards of their future professions". My response was this: "If and when I graduate, I will not have a reason to act as I am acting towards this institution due to the fact I will be doing something I truly enjoy. Essentially the only reason I am taking this stance is because the Math program which is used doesn't do what it is supposed to."
I received this letter on Sept. 8, 2010. On 09-23-10, I again received another letter from Kaplan University--this was a Letter of Dismissal. On October 1, 2010, I contacted my former Academic Advisor Sharon ** and requested all my communications with the school regarding the various issues I dealt with Kaplan. Ms. ** stated, "You need to speak with my supervisor and he is not available. It is the policies of the school that the supervisor contact you within 24-72 hours." However, I have received no such phone call since then. Prior to all of this, I had a similar class that used the same third-party computer program publisher. This was a Criminal Justice info systems class and I took this in the May-July term of last year.
This particular semester I was four weeks shy of the Presidential Honor roll when the issues started. I was doing an assignment on this particular program. I had read over the directions several times and did exactly as I was supposed to do; however, this program did not work. I spoke to the Publisher(Pearson Education) within that time frame; however, I got no straight answers--just statements such as, "We need to investigate these issues". I maintained communication with my professor regarding this matter as well as Ms. **. This issue was never fully rectified and during this course I suffered an emotional breakdown due to the fact my GPA dropped to a C and it was all attributed to this class. Approximately a couple weeks later I received notification from Ms. ** that the Pearson Education, my IT lab, was done away with due to the program malfunction.
Lastly but certainly not least, I received a call from the Financial Aid Department on 10/19/10 reference missing document(s), more specific Independent Verification Work sheet. This issue resulted in my phone bill getting to the point of $350 due to the fact I requested they send me this document via US Mail and they did not until a couple of months after (give or take) and now that I am no longer in school, how is it they can still receive money from my loan provider despite the fact I am not enrolled?
I am seeing this school for who they are. They do not like to be told they are wrong and if challenged they push their authority and cause the student undue hardship, not to mention they are unethical. I have been in contact with the Higher Learning Commission of Illinois, North Central Accreditation of Schools and Colleges and the Department of Education. This school has committed fraud against me and should be subjected to costly sanctions. It has been an emotional roller coaster for me and I feel that a law suit would be justified or even a class action suit.

I enrolled into Kaplan with credits from college and was excited to begin a journey towards a more financially stable career. I am on my second term and have been able to obtain and keep a 4.0 GPA.
However, I now am very eager to leave Kaplan and transfer to another university as soon as I can without it affecting my education. I have had countless problems with financial aid and the business office. Bottom line is this. They owe me money a few thousand dollars and I have yet to see a penny. I call 4 to 5 times a week at least! If not, more but I get the run around about when my checks are going to be mailed out. I have even been lied to as they would tell me they were being sent out that day just to find out 5 days later that my money was still with Kaplan but once again they would tell me it was getting mailed out that day.
This is federal money given to me to help with my education and yes, some of it I do have to pay back. So why is Kaplan holding my money? Legally, they have 14 days after they receive it to disburse the the money back to me. Well, here I am 3 weeks into another term and no check has been sent to me from 3 months ago! I am not trying to add to any problem, I just want the money that is mine.
I hate to say it but I will never refer anyone to Kaplan. I will tell people to stay away from it due to my experience and I am not the only one if you do a little research online. I will be speaking to a lawyer this Friday to see what my options are. I just want to get my money, transfer to another school and get my degree. I hope that Kaplan gets held responsible for their actions.

I have been a student with Kaplan for almost 2 years and it has been the worst experience I have ever encountered with a college! Here is just one of many e-mails I have sent to try to get some of my issues taken care of and yes I have saved every one, which is a stack. I am sending you this e-mail due to my frustration with the management of my account here at Kaplan University. I graduated with honors from another college and decided to enroll with Kaplan because of Tenisha Walker's encouragement with this being a better college.
I was impressed with the financial and academic advisers I spoke to. Realizing your Bachelors program was less expensive, I enrolled to obtain my degree. I was first promised a waiver of my technical fee and was told it would take less than two years to obtain my degree. Needless to say, no one would help me reverse my technical fee because I was told technical fees are never waved. Almost six months later when I happened to locate the form Ms. ** signed waving my fee, I immediately faxed it in and my fee was waved. It took my persistence to achieve what Kaplan should have already done.
Since last summer I have been receiving calls because of my balance on my account. When I enrolled, they clearly stated my FASFA would cover my tuition and I would have extra to purchase Microsoft Word and other supplies I may need (this is why I changed colleges). With no phone call from my financial adviser, my FASFA was diminished due to the poor handling of my account. I tried several times to contact Mike **, over three months later; (again with my persistence) I was able to get a hold of him. He explained to me taking two classes too many, I can only take one class at a time in order not to be in the negative. He also said he would maximize my student loans in order to ensure I will have enough to pay for my tuition.
This is alarming because this means it will take twice as long for me to graduate (which was not promised to me when I enrolled) and I have never had to only take one class at a time. Since last September of 2009, I continuously receive calls about my account, even though I reduced my credits in half. I spoke to someone on Oct. 4th, 2009 at 11:30 a.m. explaining I am requesting a different financial worker. I was told this need to be escalated and a Katy ** would call me. I waited, called again on October 9th and was told a Tiffany Washington would call me because Katie ** does not handle financial aid. I waited, On December 23rd I called again and spoke to an Amy ** and was told a Teonna Perkins would call me on this matter.
I must say, I am going to take this matter further if I cannot receive the support my money is paying for! To this day, I still have had no financial help with my concerns and frankly I have never experienced such unprofessionalism at a college! My grades have suffered because I am consumed with this quandary. "This of course is just one of many e-mails I have sent to Kaplan.
Now, I was told to cut back my credits because my FASFA won't cover 12 credits. I did this even though I hesitated because I have never taken less than 12 credits and FASFA always paid for my tuition. Then I was told to fill out another form to maximize my loans, which I've done both. Now when I question why my disbursement went from $4576 to $2326 I need to fill out more forms? Last week I sent via e-mail three times the form to maximize my loans in which of course I did not get one response from Ms. ** with a confirmation of receiving it. Of course why am I getting the run around on my financial aid? I am at the point now I'm seriously thinking of withdrawing from Kaplan and going back to my old college.
Convenience was the reason I chose this college, but I would rather work harder for a great educational experience. All I want is an education, but it seem like this school cannot do the footwork needed to make the student's experience a good one. I have tried very hard to commit myself to my education, but Kaplan is backing me into a corner and I and so tired of fighting for someone to care about their students at Kaplan.
I decided today to withdraw officially. I have only around 36 credits to finish, but the strain on me has been tremendous. I am very disappointed in myself for allowing myself to enroll in Kaplan without doing research on it first. The last thing that really alarms me is I just received an alert on my credit report that Kaplan has tried to take a personal student loan on my credit without my consent! I have good credit and these alerts I have keep me informed. They can't do this?

I was constantly getting emails that my documentation wasn't in and I would be blocked from classes. I would then call financial aid and they told me everything was in and fine. But a few days later another email and you will be blocked. Eventually that did get worked out but hey then another problem my Pell Grants were not posting.
I called and called and did everything but flying to Florida and banging down the door to make them fix it. Eventually, I get a phone call telling me there was an error in 2007 (mind you, I got this call 3 years later) and I now owed Kaplan $1800. So I finished classes and had a credit of $1900. They sent me the check. I cashed it and I called them and said I want to pay this and was told you owe nothing. I asked the person to check into it further. He said he would, but if I didn't hear from him within 5 days then the money was mine. I heard nothing.
I then tried to get my transcripts for my employer and couldn't come to find out I did owe them that money. I paid them some of it because they agreed to send my transcripts if I paid it. Guess what? They still wouldn't send. So they had set me up on a payment arrangement for the rest of the amount. The payment was one day late and they are calling me on a Sunday because of one stupid day. I eventually got to a manager who actually did help me. He settled the remaining balance for a little over half with me. He did follow through and do what he told me he was going to so I was then able to get my transcripts. The sad part is it took over a year to get everything resolved. They've also caused a great deal of hardship and distress on me, my unborn child, and family which is affecting me physically and sending me to the ER and doctor constantly. All the hardship they're causing me is putting me at high risk once again. I've already had one miscarriage due to stress and anxiety while attending Kaplan University.
I refuse to go through that again because of the burdens that the school is placing upon me. If anything happens to my unborn baby due to all this stress and anxiety that is stemming from Kaplan, I will definitely take some kind of legal action. I also have a child that's 2-year old and he's suffering also because of Kaplan. He needs things and I can't provide for him like I want to because Kaplan is putting me in debt. I've been threatened for an eviction. My power can be turned off any time now and my phone is suspended. I can be homeless at any time. These are not things you should have to go through or worry about while being pregnant.
I am a non-working mother but whenever I'm enrolled into school, I get a check every month from the VA which allows me to pay up necessary bills that are needed to be paid. This is because I am the daughter of a Disabled Veteran. Kaplan has done a terrible job notifying the VA of my enrollments each semester I was enrolled with them. Each time they failed to notify the VA, they caused a delay for me to receive my check and bills to lapse. This caused late fees from every angle and my bank accounts to go in the negative.
As of right now, Kaplan owes me money for loans and I have not received anything from them. These are loans that I applied for and was approved for that I have to pay back. I've never received the funds. Kaplan lied to me and said they sent the money back to the lender when in fact they are still holding on to it.I joined the school thinking I would be treated fairly and sincerely by all staff employees and employers. This was not the case.
Just recently my file had been tampered with by an employee that works in the Orlando Campus Center named Cateria *** and she works within the Financial Aid Department. This woman put false notes into the system under my account and canceled all my payments that were approved to me and that were suppose to be dispersed to me. I had three payments that were suppose to be mailed out to me. One was suppose to be mailed out Aug. 17th, another Aug 20th and another shortly after that. I received a letter in the mail stating that these payments have been mailed out to me which is untrue. Today is Sept. 13th and I've received nothing. For some unknown reason, Cateria*** canceled my transactions which has stopped me from receiving the funds I was approved for and suppose to receive within that promised time frame.
This caused a great amount of debt. I've come to find out that Kaplan isn't truthful about the time frame of when they say they're going to send your funds. What this employee has done with her bad judgment and poor decision making is cause hardship on me and my family and created an even bigger financial struggle then they put us in at first. I blame Kaplan because they hired her. It's obvious that Kaplan isn't good at selecting and training they're employees.
Calling the school is impossible because each employee has there own answer and will never truly help you because the problem never gets solved. They will have you going back and forth, calling from here and there. It's a run around and the job is never done right. There's always excuses and it's discouraging. When I keep calling for a status on my case for the corrections that are suppose to be made to my account, the business office tells me that the money had been sent back to the lender when it most certainly has not!
This is embezzlement! They lied about the whereabouts of the funds and they're keeping the money that is entitled to another person which is me. I hope no one else falls at the hands of Kaplan like i have. They are holding the money that's due to me within Kaplan and I don't appreciate it because its an uncalled for financial burden I have to carry and its causing hardship and pressure on me, my unborn child and family. Close ones around me have seen the results of how Kaplan has neglected and mistreated me in this matter. No pregnant woman should have to bare unnecessary burdens. It is a fragile time. I just want the funds that are due to me that they are holding on to dispersed out to me. This would be a great relief to me and my family. We've suffered enough especially the loss I had with my other baby while attending Kaplan and all the problems that came along with this school. Something needs to be done about Kaplan.

I have been an online student at Kaplan University since July 2008. I am set to graduate on November 2 with my BS Nutrition Science. My financial aid representative made an error in July 2009 that prevented me from graduating this past June. I had to take one class but borrow money for two plus pay out of pocket over $1,400.00 to correct his costly mistake. After months of jumping through all of the hoops, various FA Advisors had me jumping through. I had my fill and posted my frustration on LinkedIn. On May 11, 2010, the Ombudsman for Financial Aid at the time explained that because the error was made in a previous academic year, it could not be corrected. However, he worked with me and gave me my FA Award Letter and a Payment Plan that would take care of both the quarter I am completing now and my final quarter August 25 to November 2.
I have made all of my payments on time. I finished this quarter with a 4.0, cumulative GPA is 3.81. I have applied to a teacher certification program and requested my transcript. I was told that both my transcript and grades have been put on hold and I may not be able to begin my final quarter unless I pay the past due balance on my account and sign a new payment agreement for an amount of $1,900. I should have no past due balance. I have paid more than $4,280.00 out of my pocket so far and as agreed will pay another $670 in 3 payments September 15, October 15, and November 15. I spent 1 hour and 45 minutes on the phone trying to speak with someone today. I was transferred to the Concord School of Law Admissions Department, 2 voice mails that are no longer active and disconnect the call and had informed that Isaac the Ombudsman is no longer with Kaplan but that he made a $2,000 error not in my favor and transferred to a manager's voice mail. How many times am I going to be expected to pay thousands of dollars for Kaplan's incompetent employees?
In addition to what I have paid out of my pocket, I currently have $42,000.00 in student loans. I have worked very hard to obtain my degree. I was very disappointed when my graduation was delayed and now am very angry that I may not gain admittance to the teacher certification program. I have worked hard and borrowed more than $42,000 for an education that is worthless, if I cannot prove I have it due to other people's incompetence. I spoke with a FA Manager today, who said it is unfortunate that another mistake was made but I will have to pay and I have reached the aggregate loan limit for federal financial aid so I will have to pay or I won't get my degree. Please note that I have taken no financial stipends only enough money to cover the student loans. I have worked hard to become a High School Science Teacher. Thank you for reading this and any help you can provide to stop the corrupt handling of federal funds, not to mention the lives that schools like Kaplan University are destroying will be greatly appreciated.
Just an update, the Ombudsman Isaac who is no longer in IL but now in GA, contacted me via email today to let me know that he gave me bad information based on the Federal Student Loan computer system providing an old information and he will work with me to find another way to pay. Is he kidding? How many thousands of dollars does Kaplan think they can swindle from students just trying to get ahead. I transferred into Kaplan with 49 semester hours from a community college and I believe that $42,000 and the $4,200 I have paid out of my pocket should be sufficient. I am contacting my congressman, House of Representatives, President Obama, BBB, Attorney General, Government Office of Accountability and anyone else that I can to ask for help!

I never can get any one from Kaplain's Financial Aid Department on the phone. The number that Kaplain gives you to reach the Financial Aid Department is never answered. You will be placed on hold for approx. 3 hours and if lucky someone will pick and then tell you that they are going to transfer you to the Financial Aid Dept. (A transfer to the same number that you just called). Then you hear the same message over and over until you've grown tired of holding (3hours or more). They will not answer emails.
They constantly tell you that you have been dialing the wrong numbers. If you tell them that you have tried reaching the Financial Aid Dept. by using one number the will always attempt to give you another number to reach the Financial Aid Department at. This turns to be the same messages - leading down the same roads. Terrible situation there at Kaplain. There are many more complaints listed here on this site concerning Kaplain and it's scams.
Scams: The Financial Aid is not being disbursed correctly. Stipend funds are always a month or more late than the date(s) that they give you. You can not reach anyone if you have any questions or issues regarding your funds. Stay away from Kaplain University Online! Do your research on this University?
Hopes this helps someone. I wish I'd dug a little deeper in research before enrolling.

Kaplan University is involved in the unethical practice of holding student’s financial aid and disbursing it at their leisure. I started the enrollment process at Kaplan/Concord Law School in March 2010. I started school on April 6, 2010 and was told that I should receive my financial aid check by the middle of June. After countless calls, emails, and broken promises, I have yet to receive my check. They have on multiple times changed my disbursement date from Direct Loans to reflect the date they want. I have emails promising me that my financial aid check will arrive at the end of the week and it never occurred.
It is my belief that Kaplan is receiving these funds, placing them in interest bearing accounts and sitting on the money as long as they want. Today is August 7th, 2010, four months after I started school and I have yet to receive my financial aid. Something must be done to stop this practice. If you multiply the number of students Kaplan has by the total financial aid received, it's an extremely large number and they are profiting at our expense. I believe the next step will be to file a lawsuit and engage the media to expose them for their greed! I have suffered tremendous financial difficulties because of this. I have had to start a part-time job to help pay bills. My courses are lagging because I can't devote the time necessary to my studies. I was told that the first year of law school you are not allowed to work because the amount of time needed for studies. Since Kaplan doesn't truly care about its students, and really only care about money, they do as they wish.

I wanted to let you know about the difficult and potentially unethical situation that I have had to endure while attending Kaplan University. After many hours on hold and broken promises about the disbursement of my student loans, I feel that someone needs to know about this deceptive and unethical business practice. Here is what has happened to me to the best of my recollection and as accurately as possible. I have been a student at Kaplan University for nearly two years, working for a Masters of Science degree. During such time, I have been receiving expense related moneys or stipends on a continuous basis, receiving checks every two to two and a half months apart. So, up to date, I have received loan disbursements around 6 times.
On several occasions I have noticed that the dates posted on my accounting page at the Kaplan website have been changed to reflect a more closely related receiving, and disbursement date. For example, let’s say the day of a particular disbursement was on the 10th of one month, when the money was actually distributed was the 27th, then the 10th was changed to the 27th. In other words, it’s to cover up the lag in actual time of delivery. This is probably done since I was told that the dates posted in the computer were made up/random meaningless, and deceptive dates.
This is my current situation, which after countless phone calls, and a visit to Kaplan’s corporate office, I have been unable to alleviate. On June 16th when the posted date on my Kaplan financial statement page showed that a disbursement was to be made and mailed to me and was not, I contacted Kaplan Financial Aid Department. I was told that the Bach(s) dated for the 16th was messed-up by one of their representatives and had been pushed to the 23rd of July, over a month later. Then she decided to put the date back to the 16th of June. At some point, this date was then again moved to the 23rd of July.
I have now communicated with Direct Loans on three different occasions and have been told that the funds have been ready for Kaplan and for disbursement on June 9th, 2010. The following are a brief summary of the different reasons that Kaplan Financial Aid Department has used as excuse to why the funds have not been mailed to me as of July 28, 2010:
1) We are still waiting for Direct Loans to release the funds. (Funds have been ready since June 9th, 2010)
2) I have given your information to an expediter and they will call you back within 72 hours. (Never called back)
3) The Dean has created a new processes which has delayed the process, and that is why it’s taking longer.4) We started a new financial year on the 1st of July, and since we did not get the funds from the lender by the 1st of July, the funds have been delayed.
5) I visited Kaplan’s Corporate Fort Lauderdale office on July 12, 2010 and was given a person’s name of Fred **. I called and left a message for him, but he never called me back. Furthermore, I got an e-mail address for Anne Marie **, attached to this letter is her response. In her response, she assured me that the funds were going to be mailed out on the 23rd of July, and that they were going to be mailed out to me overnight, so that I would have the check on the 27th of July. This is from Kaplan’s Corporate office, I never got a check!
6) On July 26th 2010, I called Financial Aid, and was advised by the Kaplan representative that he had checked the Direct loan website, and that the funds had not been disbursed as of yet. I called the Direct Loan Origination Department right after speaking with the Kaplan representative and was surprised to hear a recorded message stating that their website was down. Moreover, after speaking with a representative, I was advised (and this is now the third time) that the funds had been disbursed to Kaplan and that I needed to contact the school to find out what the problem was.
7) I have called the Financial Aid Department at Kaplan, explained my problem, and told by the representative that they were going to check on the situation and to hold please, but the person never got back on the phone.
8) I even called the academic advising department to get the dean’s name, and the address to the corporate office, and the person would not give me either one.
9) All of the conversations have been recorded by Kaplan University, so that all that I’m stating in this letter can be verified.
This is the problem that I'm facing now, I have been in school for almost 2 years, and have been receiving living expense checks on a continuous basis. I have a job, which helps me supplement these funds until I can finish my education, and get a better job. So, when my funds are kept by Kaplan for two months, and now it has been over 3-3/4 months since my last disbursement, there is a problem, which will be leaving me, and my family (I have a 2 sons, and their mother) homeless.
The biggest ethical issue here is that if Kaplan University is holding on to these funds in an interest earning account then I should be entitled to the interest from this account. Furthermore, why are they entitled to use my funds for their gain at my expense, and hardship? How long can a school hold moneys which do not belong to them? These are loans that I have to pay back. These loans are federal loans, does the federal government have any rules/laws on how long a school can hold these funds for?
Its clear that someone here is not telling the truth, on one hand, I have Kaplan telling me that they are waiting for the federal government, and on the other we have the direct loans, a lending department funded by federal government telling me it’s Kaplan’s responsibility of disbursing these funds. At this point, I have lost so much, and hope that this letter is investigated so that other students will not have to undergo this up-and-down nightmare. One thing is for sure, I wish I would have never enrolled at Kaplan University and will never forget this situation. To me this is part of why this country is in such a financial disaster, greed!

In the later part of June this year, my online class was given an assignment: Speak to a situation where a business and/or their bookkeeping was bad and why one would or would not continue to business with that company. I identified Kaplan in my story. I was addressed in a public forum by John ** who took offense with my comments. He forwarded my comments to Ginger, a dean of some sort. Ginger contacted me via email and I responded to her comments. I was professional, but stern in my comments.
My comments were along the line that I am not an employee of Kaplan and as a citizen and soldier, they did not have to like my opinion. My speech is protected. Charles contacted me and advised me as I was dismissed that my comments were "inappropriate, profane and obscene". I do not know what the man was reading, but it was not what I wrote. I was dismissed with money unaccounted for during finals week. I had at the time a 90 in my writing class and a 74 in my Medical Office Management course. After finals, I would have been invited again to the honor roll as well as making the dean's list again. Every term I have attended Kaplan, I have been on the dean's list. No appeals, no board, no nothing, just Charles ** saying his interpretation of what I wrote.
I can provide the documents I have to further substantiate my claim. My speech about my dealings with a company is protected, but Kaplan has violated it and taken sanctions against me. I came to Kaplan after a 25-year absence from school and was doing exceptionally well. I think there were some racial issues with the professor John **. Every professor I had will recall me by name, no need to look me up. I tend to make an impression. I addressed what I thought were racial issues in an email to John **, comments to a dean who contacted me via email. I responded and told her that I did not work for her or Kaplan. In fact I told her, I pay your employer to provide a service that they did not own me nor would I be influenced by their interpretations or opinions. I have been "dismissed". No hearing, no evidence, no board, no nothing. Just Charles saying I was profane.
Naturally I cannot get anyone with an ounce of brainpower on the phone at this university, at least no one who wants to speak to me about my financial aid that they received and the disbursement I was to get. They tell me now I owe them money. I attended 5 terms, and as a soldier, never paid a dime. Now I owe them money, but the fact of the matter is they owe me. I have paid for a term that has been uncompleted for no appropriate reason other than they did not like the tongue lashing I gave them about the fact that I am a customer, not an employee and the fact they would not talk to me or treat me disrespectfully. I want to sue. I have been slandered by this company and it will follow me as I seek other schools.

Now after telling me I don't owe them any money, they now want to charge me $1145 for them holding me a seat in a class they signed me up for.

I had enrolled in the Kaplan online school, on the Dean's list as well. However at the time I was receiving food stamps from South Carolina. They told me the only choice I had was to give up school or lose my assistance. Being in the situation, I knew I was forced to give up my schooling. The food stamps were my only source of income at that time.
I called Kaplan and spoke to a woman (I do not remember who though). She helped me do the withdrawal. I told her I was concerned that I would end up with some kind of a balance. She looked everything over and said that I should be all set and should not get any bills.
Needless to say, 3-4 years later that bill is over $500, I do believe. Today, I have to live on $700 every month. That's for my home, my dog and my SUV. It's not enough to do what I need to do. Anyway, I really do want to go back to school but it scares me to think that I will end up with a huge student loan bill in the end that I would never be able to finish.

I had enrolled into Kaplan University for the online classes in 2009. I had decided that besides never getting any type of assistance with classes and 2 classes being too much, I had found another school. This school does 1 class for 5 weeks and then you have another. I then called Kaplan to ask about transferring. I was told that I would have to withdraw. I spoke with Financial Aid and when I spoke with them, I made it a point to find out if I would be penalized for withdrawing mid-term. I was advised that I wouldn't be.
Now that everything had gone through, I am being charged $2,195.00. They will not send transcripts or clearance form to the new school. I had spoken with a supervisor on June 28th and again July 2. On the 28th, a supervisor, who I believe had a last name of ** or **, told me that I would have to wait until the 7th to get the clearance letter. He also advised that I could look into getting a loan to cover the amount that is due to repay them. I spoke with a supervisor on July 2nd, who told me there are no notes in the system of speaking with a supervisor that day. She was also rude and told me that they weren't going to help me in any way until I paid what is due to them. Keep in mind, I have received an email on the 28th of June stating that I owe this amount and received a phone call and e-mail on July 2nd asking for the payment.

I have been enrolled as a Kaplan student for over a year now. I have experienced nothing but problems with the financial aid department from the beginning. I recently learned that the so-called financial aid officers are no more than Kaplan students themselves. Last semester, I received a living expenses check from my financial aid money for over $2,000. Now I am being told that my financial aid officer J. ** made a mistake and now I am being told that I must repay a little over $300.00. Now I am having problems with an Anatomy and Physiology II class where the professor, Dr. Mary ** would not participate in the class discussion board until a complaint was made.
Now the professor posts 8 to 12 questions (all on the same day within minuets of each other) to the discussion board, then when students answer the questions, the professor does not respond to their answers as if their answer was correct. I must say that after reading all of the horror stories, I am wondering if my Health Science degree will be worth anything in the future. Kaplan University is supposed to be regionally accredited, which most other online schools are not. If my degree is no good, then Kaplan University and its CEOs need to be sued.
From what I have read, I don't understand why someone has not initiated a class action lawsuit. All it takes is a few individuals stepping up, going in together to file this type of suit, then others will be notified and may join the suit. To the lady who fears her SSI check being garnished. I worked several years in a law firm, which also handled collections. Kaplan may get a judgment against you, place a generic lean against you, but they, nor anyone else, cannot garnish any type of government check, nor can they, or anyone else for that matter, bank levy an account where a government check is deposited into.
Next time they threaten you with this type action, if it's a collection agency, turn them into your State Department of Commerce and Insurance office who licenses them to do business in your state. If it is a law firm threatening this type of action, write a complaint and send it to your state's board of professional responsibilities who can shut the doors on a law firm for threatening action they cannot legally take against someone. If you are lucky enough to catch these individuals on tape telling you this, or you can record them some way, and send a copy of the tape in, you can put the final stitch in their backside! We all need to file complaints with the accreditation board who accredits Kaplan University, they could loose their accreditation.

I was a student at Kaplan University online campus for approximately 2 years. I had the Pell Grant and student loans through a banking institution. I have the same feelings as many others about Kaplan University in regards that they are scamming individuals. My story is a little different than others, but I am sure there are those out there that have had a very similar experience.
In 2007, I had to send in my tax forms to the school. I sent the forms to both the Academic Advisor and Financial Aide. I was threatened with being kicked out of the school if I did not send them to the records division or whatever they called it there. I complied and was granted access to my classes. Then last year in 2009, I was told the same thing. Now mind you, in that time, both years I had to file amended returns due to Kaplan not sending me their information for my taxes by the February 1st deadline. I received the information in mid-late March 2009. Being the kind of individual that likes to beat the tax rush I could not wait any longer and filed in the second week of February 2009. I had a repossession and my tax information was in my vehicle and when I finally got my vehicle back, the original tax form had been lost, stolen or thrown away. I filed an amendment, and when that came in, Kaplan had already locked me out of my classes until I got the paperwork to them.
I called the Financial Aide and explained to them the situation and sent the amended return, this time to Financial Aide, Academic Advisor and Records. They advised me that they needed the original tax form along with the amendment to process my paperwork. According to FSFA the amendment sufficed for their records due to the amendment being the most recent and most accurate record. Kaplan advised me that I would have to obtain the originals from the company that did my taxes which was H&R Block. For those that don't know when you do an amendment with H&R Block, the original form is deleted from the system. I advised Kaplan about this and they required me to get a transcript from the IRS. This process tool two months and when I finally got the records to send to Kaplan they had disenrolled me from the school.
I made several attempts at contacting them and even spoke to them on several occasions when they called me and explained the situation and if there was any way they could work with me. The resounding answer was no but they wanted me to pay $3000.00. I again made several attempts to get back in contact with the school until finally I stopped. Now this year, they have hired a collections firm Joseph, Mann and Creed to get the money from me in one payment. After talking to the woman for approximately 20 minutes and getting nowhere, I am at my wits end with this school and this company. And for the record, if they by chance read this post, I also recorded the conversation I had with the collections company for future reference if need be. Georgia is a one party recording state meaning that only one person needs to be aware that they are being recorded, and does not have to be announced as long as the person doing the recording is a part of the conversation.

I "graduated" from Kaplan University in 2006, I think, with an associates degree in paralegal studies and $23,000 in student loan debt.
I obtained employment with a law firm a few months before graduation. I had taken a lot of time creating a portfolio of my legal writings including their grades. I also obtained a letter of recommendation from my law professor who was a practicing attorney. This portfolio was reviewed at length by my employer and I was offered a position as the lead paralegal. The attorney expected me to be able to handle any and all aspects of the law office other than of course, anything that should have been handled by the attorney. I barely lasted a year and immediately caved under the pressure of "not knowing what I apparently should have known".
My grades in school were straight A's and I worked incredibly hard but when I starting working in the law office, it was apparent that I had no idea what should be done or how it should be done. In light of this, I now owe all of this student loan debt and am unable to find a job in my field and am in default of my student loans because I can't support myself.
I wish that I had known that this school was not a school where credits are transferable and where the "material" isn't appropriate or conducive to learning how to work in the legal environment. My "psyche" was so damaged by the year that I worked for that attorney because he constantly screamed and yelled and cussed at me because I didn't know what I was doing although I tried very hard.

Everything I have read bad about the University of Phoenix can be said about Kaplan from the not crediting of financial aid. I am still waiting after 10 weeks, for which I have talked to numerous people almost daily, sent emails. I have had several financial aid advisers, they change every term. Availability of instructors to talk to is non existent and some don't even teach, they just repeat the instructions and don't help anyone to understand the material, or they change the syllabus completely around midstream and you end up playing catch up or instructions are changed over several times and posted in several places so you can't find them.
I have complained and every time I try to use one of the recourse links, they say the link is no longer available. While all that is bad, I am especially concerned over the financial aid because I can't afford the bill and I think there is something stinky going on that they are holding on to it so long. Not to mention hour long hold times to even talk to someone and no one responds to their emails. Can we get the Dept. of Ed. in on this? Possibly ending up with a huge bill, legal action. I can't concentrate at work and running up huge phone bills, and time taken away from work to deal with these people.

I just finished school at Kaplan on March 16th and obtained a Bachelor's Degree. I have a credit from a Pell grant and payment sitting on my account that I have asked multiple times to be sent to me. The first couple of people I talked to told me that the money would be refunded within days. After I waited weeks and nothing was refunded, I called back and was told my account had to go through a verification to make sure I didn't owe the school any more money.
After I received my degree, I knew financial aid had no clue what they were talking about. I asked to speak to supervisors and were hung up on, transferred to voice mails that belong to no one. I have emailed my new financial advisor multiple times only to receive nothing. I emailed my old financial advisor, still nothing. I have turned this situation into to the Texas Attorney General, BBB and Fox 7 on your side.
When I finally talked to a supervisor, first, she told me the system was locked by another user and this prevented her from accessing my account to refund. I didn't think that was correct because the credit was generated due to a pay grant. I am actually am going back to school in August to get my MBA but due to Financial Aid, Kaplan has lost my business there. I would like the credit of $831.44 sitting on my account refunded to me. I loved Kaplan as a school. The only bad experience I had was every time I had to contact financial aid. It is because of Kaplan's financial aid that I have decided to enroll at National American University for my MBA.
I have worked very hard for my degree, and I would have continued with Kaplan for my MBA but the disrespect of financial aid has left a bad taste in my mouth. Throughout my four years at Kaplan, I never had a problem with teachers, studies, etc. The only time I hated my school was when I had to talk to financial aid. They never ever knew what they spoke of. It was always a hassle of I don't knows, maybe this is the answer, etc.
As currently an alumni for the school, I can say this is not the first time I have had to write a little like the about the financial aid department. People will get tired of being hung up on after spending three hours on hold just because it is 20 minutes to closing time, they will get tired of having to hang up and call back to verify what the last person told them to make sure it was correct and people will get tired of Kaplan.

I was shopping around for online schools and I requested information from Kaplan. I was instantly bombarded with phone calls from them. During that time, it came to my attention many complaints against the school. I did tell them I decided to look at other schools and I thought that was the end of it. I continued to get calls everyday. I even attempted to block their phone number but did that stop them? No! So I received another call yesterday. I answered the call and politely told James * that I decided on another school. So, today I received the following email from James: "Dear Robin, I am glad you found a college. I was trying to ask you one more question about your college before you so rudely hung up on me. Judging by the way you handle yourself on the phone, you wouldn't have been a good fit for Kaplan University anyhow. I wish you the best of luck." I guess some people cannot handle rejection.

It has been 13 weeks since enrolling in Kaplan. I have yet to receive my refund check for my overages. This should have happened in the third week. However, this place didn't even request the money from the government until the 10th week! I was finished with my term already. So now it has been another 2 weeks and I call all the time and get the same answer: "it has been dispatched already, you should have it in a week, you will get it in a couple weeks," etc. No one has ever said the same thing twice. I called the ombudsman and explained what Kaplan is doing. They were not happy. Soon after, I got a call from Kaplan with another story.
Well I still don't have my refund and now they owe me another one. This place is full of scamming thieves that are pretending to be a university, which they are not. Their degree is worthless. Employers don't view it as a real degree. Good colleges will not accept any credits from Kaplan. Their founders don't even have a college degree and they stole 4 billion dollars from the government. Read about it on google. Why are they still receiving funding?
I am calling everyone I can think of to complain about this place including the government. There are too many people with big complaints to just let it go. I will not tolerate it. Please do not go to this school, if that is what you want to call it.

I agree with you all. Kaplan needs to be investigated. I wonder if people believe we are calling them con artists and scammers, because we neglected our student accounts in someway. This is not the case. I too was dismissed from Kaplan University, because they said they over paid me. I wish we could do something. I was not allowed to finish my education. I was also charged way more than the school described to me, that the course cost.

This is really disturbing. How can these many students all experience the same fraudulent problems dealing with this school and it is getting overlooked? They are still enrolling students and we still are out of an education. My Kaplan education was paid in full because they couldn't find a reason to get out of pocket money for me. They went and falsified information, stating they overpaid me in the first semester. Now, what kind of financial aid department waits until your fourth semester when the charts is full of number and tells you that you were overpaid in the first semester?
Not only that they originally stated I was overpaid $875 and then they stated I was booted from the school from non-attendance and stated I only owed them $235. Wait. What the heck happened to the original $875? This is way too much fraud and this school is accredited, FASFA approved, etc. We need to stop with these emails, write the president, US Department of Justice, Attorney General's office, their accrediting department. Whoever you can think of big, write them over and over again.
This is our education and it is not fair to us. If there are any lawyers out there, I think this case could be a big one. It is over 30,000 student complaints throughout the internet begging for answers about this corrupt school. I don't know about you guys but I want answers. I have not been able to speak to anyone about what is really going on with my education. That remind you I have award letters sitting right in front of me for every semester being fully paid for. Then instead of checking their FA department they booted me out the school for non-attendance after they blocked my account so that I can't get in. I can't even explain how crooked this school is. Someone needs to do something quick before I can't finish my education.

Kaplan University is terrible, Instructors do not answer emails with questions regarding projects, seminars, explanations...anything during the whole term. I had hardship and need to drop for a few months. That was in 10/09. In March of 2010, I called Kaplan to enroll back into class. I was told I had to pay over 4K before I could enter back into the school. I was shocked to find out that all the funds I have applied for were return and I was going to have to pay the school. I only took 2 classes and seems like they would have made some suggestions on how to help me before I got in this mess.
Customer service are terrible, academic advising department treat with zero respect, make fun of you on the phone, and with "sarcastic comments". The adviser was not much help at all with my issue. I was sent to several people in financial aid department with nothing but "you owe the school". I even explained my problem and it was more of we don't care about that, we just want the money today.
I was in the middle of a class, trying to drop Kaplan but once you there, you are stuck in this terrible institution! All I got out of Kaplan is bills, no degree just the biggest mistake I ever made. Kaplan should be out of business, they want your money and could care less if you get a degree. Kaplan caused me a over 4K in debt and nothing in return.
