I wished I had read some of these reviews as well. I just talked to customer service and apparently I signed up for a YEAR subscription at 13.95 month but it's billed in 3 installments in the first 3 months. You have only 3 DAYS, so they say, to opt out if you change your mind. After that no hope. You are stuck. So make sure you understand what you are agreeing to. They have made it very confusing. Oh, and when you call they may be sympathetic but they will tell you repeatedly too bad! Now, the reason I called is I had MANY MANY matches to the point to work with them is virtually impossible. Granted, I think this was because I had left my profile a little too general. So if you do sign up (I would not) be sure to do your profile and I would make it specific as possible (small age range, etc) and get a feel for things first; otherwise, you may have a mess like me. I haven't used any other sites but I would never ever recommend using this site.

Called them after looking at site and never had an account. They billed my card for 59.95 per mo. And I don’t know what is even for. I notified them and they said they would cancel and send email to confirm and refund credit. Never happened. I got back from being gone a few months and when reviewing card charges, and they continued for 6mo. I called 3 times on hold forever; they all lied saying computer problems. They could not find account because there isn't any and said they would send to card fraud indicating someone else was using my card. Cancelled card they didn't deny charging. No one else is using the card as there are no other fraudulent charges on card. Has not been resolved. Site should be shut down for criminal use on the internet.

Then the following month they again charged me $39.80. When I called to tell them this isn't what I signed up for, they refused my cancellation and are still trying to get my money. I'm now having to work through their paper work to get out of this bogus contract. Beware folks, They pull the old bait and switch and then make you fight to get your money back. Once they've got their hooks in they make it so difficult to leave to the point I feel should be illegal. I signed up for a 3-month trial subscription but they make the way to go about totally cancelling before renewal so unclear that come the fourth month, I was still getting mail from them and still paying. I know I clicked a link that said "discontinue" or something to that effect, several times. They can't just leave it at that. They want to know why, they want to persuade you to stay with eHarmony till your paid time left with them is up (hoping you'll forget to cancel on the last day), they need you to complete a questionnaire.

I didn't fall for any of their delaying tactics and somehow I still ended up staying subscribed. They make it (as all of these sites always do) extremely difficult to find the right contact. After 3 emails over 2 months, intermittently under the impression I was all clear of them, I finally got confirmation of the cancellation and a refund that I had to do a lot of chasing to get but which still wasn't the full amount they had promised back. After 5 months of chasing, I was feeling like my annoyance at them was doing me more harm than the amount they owed me was worth so begrudgingly decided to let it go. Now, as I said, almost a year on, I am still stuck on there as a non-paying subscriber. I cannot get rid of my profile!!! I still get their stupid emails through almost daily urging me to check out my new matches. I have tried to cancel this several times.

I found the service useless even when I tried to use it, the matches were not the dream set ups as promised on the ads. They never matched my criteria, they often were too far and often had no one thing in common with the specifics I marked as important, and I only marked a few things as particularly important. Instead I was flooded with messages from men who were almost like exact opposites to my few particular requests. I couldn't possibly have even answered half of them and felt awful about it, my inbox was swamped, it was a complete nightmare.

There is no direct instructions under help, and yet it must be such a common request to leave the site. No one searches forever, you either find someone or give up. You have to search to find instructions. Then when you do - not only are there 3 steps (to me there seems no reason for this not to just be one click and you're off) but you also have to actually send an email to a team requesting for your profile to be deleted!! You have clicked a box clearly stating your desire to leave, you have chosen a reason from a list (which I feel is none of their business at this point anyway) and then you have to send email too?

Both times I have gone through this process, I get an automated email saying that they were sorry I was thinking about leaving and that in order to delete my profile I would have to ring this 0800 number and tell one of the team my reasons! I don't have to have a reason! I am not legally bound to these people! I don't want anymore of their proxy emails, I'm not interested in their bad matches, I'm not interested at all in dating for the moment either. I shouldn't have to explain myself or go along with this wild goose chase in order to rid myself of these people. Oh, and "here's a link so you can read about people who also almost gave up on searching and ended up finding love with eHarmony"!!

I am your average working class person. I work from 9-17:30. I don't get an awful lot of time to be hanging on the end of a line in order to tell some stranger why I'm not interested in dating. I ticked boxes that should have been adequate confirmation of my wanting to leave. I sent 2 emails that I shouldn't have to have sent. A day after not responding and I am still getting their wretched emails. You think you are joining something that takes all the stress out of dating? Forget it. Leave well alone.

Every time I've joined it, no matter what, they always say that they have NO matches for me. I've tried it several times only because I keep seeing these commercials, fake at that, and think I'll try it one more time. Now they have a commercial on TV of his granddaughter trying to push his fake site. Plus, I've been married twice before and they said I do not qualify for their website. But if I put down that I've been married only once before, I qualify. Someone needs to get rid of this fake organization that only takes your money.

During that time I averaged 100hrs per week. I have tried their "Contact us" option and never received a reply. There is absolutely no way for me to cancel with this company. How can this be legal?

This went from being a genuine dating site to a money mill and scam. Never again. I subscribed for a year with "3 easy payments" and always cancel the auto-renew option right away (3rd go-around with eHarmony). But the cancel link isn't there when you choose that option because you haven't finished paying for the year. By the time you get to the 3rd payment, you forget to cancel. Of course, they don't remind you that your subscription is about to auto-renew. They just do it. And customer care is about as useful as fleece along the equator.

The customer service rep said he saw it was set not to auto-renew but, I knew better this time. Advice to all those out there (although you probably reading this AFTER they scammed you) but when you want to cancel auto renewal and cancel your account, call them and INSIST that they send you a confirmation e-mail (so you have something to fight their charge with). Also, I highly doubt that the matches that they keep on sending you do not include other people who have cancelled but, that's not something I can prove.

Like so many others here, I was just hit by eHarmony's renewal scam. I signed up in June 2013. At first, it seemed OK, but then after a while, I noticed most of my matches were well outside the settings I'd asked for, namely location - most were 2+ hours away from where I live. After a while with no decent results, I decided to cancel. I followed all the instructions, turned my auto renewal off by clicking the cancel account link, and was shown that my subscription would finish on 12/22/13. Aside from the actual webpage, the only confirmation they send is an email saying your account has been "updated", with no mention of the cancellation, but since I followed their procedure, I figured it would be OK.

Then along comes 12/22/13, and they hit me with a $167 charge to my credit card. I emailed, then finally found a customer service phone number on another site, and was told that the original cancellation "didn't go through", and the only cancellation they saw was from today, which I did to be sure it wouldn't charge again. How convenient for them that it didn't go through, huh? I was told no refunds. I asked to speak with a supervisor, was told there was no one else there who could help and no one could give a full refund. After stating that I was going to dispute the charge with my credit card company, I was told they could reduce the membership down to a 3 month (half the time), and refund me $50 (less than 1/3 the cost).

I told them that was better than nothing, but that I was still filing a dispute with the credit card company, which I just did. I wasn't really happy with the site itself to begin with, but that's fine, lesson learned to avoid it in the future. But I am livid over their dishonest and fraudulent practices of charging people repeatedly when they have canceled their account, and how sneaky they are to not send any proof of said cancellation. I would NEVER use them again, and would caution any against it due to the billing fraud which I now see is incredibly common.

I am taking this matter further to an attorney. Certain that a class action suit against this company may be near in the future. I would like to see Congress get involved with other companies who practice "auto renewal" without advising the client and authorization. It's not the dollar amount, it's the integrity. Further stating, they refuse to honor their satisfaction guarantee policy and/or the 72-hour cancellation policy. There are plenty of other dating websites that don't practice fraudulent behavior. My experience resonates with every single person here. I find their auto-renewal policy extremely fraudulent, especially when a refund request has been made within their 3-day window. I have not only been refused but my account was closed without explanation. Considering the dissatisfaction of customers and fraudulent policies, isn't there a case for a class action lawsuit? Not only did they renew my acct without my approval, they closed my account without reason. I was told to call and when I did, then told to email. I've emailed but have not heard back from them. Rarely do I feel this strongly to spend my time researching a company. This time, I'm infuriated and feel small consolation in knowing I am not being unreasonable. Stay away from this company! When I initially signed up with eHarmony for 3 months on 9/9/13, I immediately cancelled my subscription so that I would not be automatically renewed. Since I had gone through this procedure I didn't notice until one week after my subscription was over on 12/9/13 that they had auto renewed me. On 12/15/13, just one week after my initial term period, I contacted eHarmony to tell them THEY ERRONEOUSLY auto renewed me. I was advised by someone on the phone that I didn't terminate until that day 12/15 and it was too late, I was already enrolled for another month for $29.

This is an obvious scam since the internet is filled with the exact same complaint. There were not notifications sent to me, no reminders that I was about to be renewed so I had no way of knowing that there's either a glitch on their end, or they disable whatever you do to terminate the auto renew when you sign up. There is no human being to dispute this with. They let me file my complaint in writing and they send back a form letter email telling me in effect - tuff nuts ... I'm being charged and there's nothing they can do about it!

IF the site was worth it, I would do another month. But it's not. There are very few matches available AND I believe most of the people on there are NOT current and active members. So you are writing to people who are inactive, eHarmony forwards your letter of interest to inactive members in the hopes of getting them to join. They never do. The probably already know what a waste of time and money EHARMONY is. The word has to get out about this and something has to be done to stop them from their very unscrupulous auto renew methods. I signed up for the eHarmony service in November 2012 - the deal seemed pretty good. Pay for 3 months and get a full year for free. 3 installment payments. After using the service for a few months, I began dating someone (I did not meet this person through eHarmony). In June 2013, I turned off all email notification as I was no longer interested in receiving any matches. And happily forgot about my eHarmony account.

Fast forward to December 2013. All of a sudden I begin receiving eHarmony match emails. Hmm, I then proceed to check my credit card statement. A charge is made on November 27, 2013. I go on their website to close my account and surprise - I cannot do so until I make 2 additional installment payments. Apparently, I have failed to turn off the auto renewal feature and have signed up FOR A WHOLE YEAR OF SERVICE that I stopped using 6 months ago.

I contacted customer service who obviously told me that they can't do anything and told me to send an email to their conflict resolution department, who then replied to me that since they do not see any attempts of me trying to close my account prior to my subscription expiration, there is nothing they can do for me. Oh and that this decision is final and there will be no further communication on the matter.

    Well. Here are my thoughts:

    - This autorenewal feature is designed to screw people into subscribing for service whether they'd like to or not.
    - No email is sent out reminding the valued eHarmony members that their subscriptions are coming to an end.

    - If you're going to autorenew a subscription, why is it not done on a month to month basis? A whole year? Are you kidding me?

Thus, Dear eHarmony, you are a joke and a rip off. I will be "communicating" about this issue as long as I want to. That's my final decision on the quality of your service.

I had heard great things about eHarmony from many people so after my ex and I broke up, I decided to give it a try for myself. When I registered, I entered my information and waited to receive matches. The website was somewhat difficult to navigate but when I finally figured it out, I realized that there was no way to search people. (On match.com, there is criteria that you can put in and search people in your zip code radius.) Instead, the website matches you with people it feels you would get along well with based on your personality. But I must mention that those matches based on your personality can be thousands of miles away. I am in Florida and I would get matches in Georgia, South Carolina & Virginia to name a few. I would put that distance was "Extremely important" to me (since I have a busy life and cannot drive six hours for "love"). The website told me to "loosen up" and that love would find me if I relaxed a little.

I really didn't appreciate the website telling me to compromise myself for one thing and it didn't let me search people who might have been good potential matches! When I called to express my dissatisfaction with the website, the customer care representative asked me if I wanted to try and renew my subscription for an extra month to see if I could find someone! I told him heck no! The style of the website as well is not well set up. First, you start up asking the person "Quick Questions", if the person likes you past that round, they send you their pre-arranged "makes or breaks", then they send you some free response questions to "Dig Deeper" and then you can finally send the person a message. There is also the option to skip to the message but the website cautions you against this in order not to look "creepy".

The website felt more like you were playing a game by going back and forth with the person than an actual dating site. My membership is up on December 20. I have gotten so far as giving my cell phone number to one guy in my two months of membership. We still have not met up. This website is a bit of a blow to one's self esteem. I am a decent looking woman who is successful, and I would like to consider my personality to be a good one. I suppose I am being too picky, however, because I don't want to drive to Virginia to find my true love. I think I'll try my luck at the bar scene over this. Waste of money. Will not renew.

When I finally reached customer service I got the usual "thought we were doing you a service". The only thing that stopped the emails was to ask for Neal Clark Warren's phone number so I could tell him directly what was going on and what a poor operation he had associated his name with.

When I first started with eHarmony 4 years ago, I would get 5-10 matches per week of that, I would send a response to like 3-4 of them and have at least 2-3 dates per month. Seems like eHarmony has gone downhill and I barely get 1-3 matches a week and we don't have much in common so I can't even send an email. I think I initiate one contact a month, when before it was 1-2 per week. I have lost weight, improved my appearance, etc... Even a few years ago when I was a "bigger" guy, I got enough to work with so I could at least get 2-3 dates per month... I've been on 1 date in the past 5 months... I will not be renewing eHarmony when my time is up.... I will probably go to the free sites, but create an email so I don't get spammed..... and then spend my money on going out and socializing more in person.

There's a reason eHarmony only has a yearly subscription, if you could try it for less time then you'd never renew. You may get the occasional "match" that lives near you but for the most part you'll be matched with people who don't live anywhere near you. Good luck with dating them. If your'e really looking to try an online dating site try one of the actually free sites or a site that you can pay for a month at a time in order to be able to try it.

Save your $150 for something useful, with eHarmony you'll just be throwing it away. Don't get sucked into the commercial like I did. Keep in mind that everyone that creates a profile didn't necessarily sign up for the site, giving eHharmony numbers to claim and people for you to look at, so you (if you join) could communicate with them but they couldn't communicate with you or even read your message. They just get a message saying someone is REALLY INTERESTED LOL. Worse than it being a huge waste of money it's an even bigger waste of time. I don't have time to plow through pics of non users that don't even live in the same state as I do. How do you "match" 25 areas of compatibility and fail to account for ZIP CODE... Try the free sites, try the monthly pay sites, or go back to the bar scene, just don't go to eHarmony.

I had once joined eHarmony before and was well aware they had auto renewal unless you disable. So when I endeavored to sign up, it was one of the first options I unticked. The site does not make it easy for you to find. It is very sneaky. I stopped using eHarmony and forgot about it. 3 months later I am surprised to see my money taken out for an auto renewal. I contacted eHarmony via email after 3 days I discovered. I explained I had disabled auto renewal and my money was taken and I even provided a screenshot where my page stated that auto renewal was turned off.

eHarmony refused. They said I was not within the time frame of 3 days. They also stated that they had no record of the auto renewal switched off and someone must have switched off after I had contacted them. I asked how can I prove and they basically said you can't . I was disgusted, in the emails basically all they said was read our terms and conditions. Yes, I understood them all but if they are at fault, how can I prove that. So I would not recommend eHarmony at all to anyone! It's not even very good as a service. Stick to free dating services or at least ones that are cheaper and do not unlawfully take your money.

This has easily been the worst experience I've ever had. I do believe in online dating, but not on this site. First off, they are a bunch of scam artists. They turned on my automatic review and double charged me and will not refund. I talked and I appealed and worked my way up their call center, only to find that the further up you go, the less helpful the people become. Not only that, I've asked if they can close my account and they REFUSE until I accept the forfeiture of payment. I told them I do not accept losing money but they should close the account. They will not do that at all and my account is active despite I've asked repeatedly to close it. On top of that, they've continued to spam me with emails of matches that are 50+ miles away.

The service itself is also AWFUL. In the time I was on the site for 6 months, I've gone on about 8-10 dates. Not a lot by any means - mainly because I was being matched with people who live in LA and as far as Las Vegas and I live in San Diego, over 2.5 hours away from LA and 5 hours from Las Vegas. They tell me that there's not enough people within my radius... when I live in the SECOND LARGEST CITY IN CALIFORNIA, and the 8th LARGEST CITY IN THE US.

Not only that they told me that I'm too restrictive for wanting someone who did not smoke. I said it's VERY important to me not to date a smoker or someone that uses recreational drug use..which I think is reasonable to ask for. Yet they tell me that I'd have better and more results... which to me sounds counter intuitive. More results would be nice, but quality results, not with people I couldn't get along with. They're essentially pushing that I should open up and date people I don't like and know for a fact wouldn't get along with.

But back to those I was actually paired up with. Most of them were okay, just not a match, but then I had two nightmares. One was with a woman who I later discovered was married. eHarmony, I guess, doesn't screen for those types of things. The other with a girl who later stalked me and I had to move, change numbers, and reduce my social presence online. Now, normally I wouldn't have problems with this, I work in sales and deal with all sorts of people who are deceptive, but eHarmony claimed to have the best user screening out there. One of their marketing materials claim they deny people who are out there to scam. If they pride so much on that, they should stick to their claim, which they don't.

On top of that, they pride themselves on service. Between the terrible matching service, they deliver and extra difficult customer service. They hide behind walls and do nothing to improve. When I talked to them about my problem and told them that it appears there are many people out there with the same problem, they claim that we're all "internet trolls" and not real people.

Well, I, for one am not a troll and will be willing to talk to anyone over the phone in person about how poor this service actually is and how you should go elsewhere with your time and money. I would not use this service again even if it was free and guaranteed that I get to go on a date with Scarlett Johansson. I'm pretty sure it would mean free for 1 second then charge me $200 and the date would actually be with Scarlett Johan's son, a 2-pack-a-day chain smoker who lives in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

ILLEGAL AND MISLEADING MEMBERSHIP FEE PRACTICES... not to mention wretched customer service. I purchased a trial offer at eHarmony for a 3-month period at $6.99 a month. I did NOT authorize automatic renewal (and would not have signed up if it was required). I did NOT sign up for a full year. There were NO disclaimers on the sign-up page stating the rules they subsequently unloaded on me. However, this week they automatically debited my bank account for 1/3rd of a yearly contract. When I attempted to cancel the membership on-line, their website did NOT provide the information or options needed to cancel the membership, even though their Help pages said the account info would be available (the settings were impossible to access). Other Help pages were in CHINESE, making it impossible to cancel.

I finally called the 800 number and was informed that I could not cancel in the middle of a "billing cycle" even though I had NOT signed up for a year, and would have to pay the full year's fee in order to cancel. I could not even disable auto-renewal until the full payment cycle had been completed or I paid for the remainder of the year??!!! This has to be illegal. First they lie to you about the rate, ignore the preferences you check, then debit your account for a different amount and then refuse to cancel either your membership or your auto-renew before they will cancel? In other words, they are demanding a ransom before they will disable the auto-renewal they never had authorization to use in the first place! Do NOT give them your credit card info. Please warn all your friends NEVER to join eHarmony. If I could give them zero stars, I would. It is a dishonest company that cons their clientele into committing for three months to a year. Then after 2 weeks of sending people who live nearby, a vast majority of which are clearly not a match to you in any way, they begin to send only EMPTY profiles of people who live a 1000 miles away or absolute NON-matches. They give no way for the member to search their site, they choose your seven matches a day and only do so if you allow eHarmony to email you. These matches begin to repeat within a month. There is a "what if" category that allows you to search a dozen potential matches they say are outside your "match range". These are random people many up to 25 years younger or older, from around the country, most of whom have empty or near empty profiles with a single photo, who later end up in your daily seven actual matches. One of my daily seven matches I received from eHarmony was so clearly fraudulent, they immediately began emailing me through the site, phishing me for my actual email address in broken speech.

I attempted to email eHarmony to cancel and was told to call. I called and the person was really rude and then told me there was nothing they could do, that I should email the address they would send me. I emailed that address and again heard nothing. Since I emailed however, I have stopped receiving any updates on their website, which is nice, but they kept a year's membership fees for 5 weeks of HORRIFIC service. I have since used their on-site messenger to attempt to receive help and still have received no reply. The site uses TV commercials to trick more people into their scam hoping no one ever reads reviews prior to signing up. If eHarmony simply said, "We do not have any matches for you at this time," that would be honest. Instead they trap you for your entire period.

People sincerely want to find love and companionship and eHarmony preys upon this need. I offered to pay for the time I'd used and even offered to pay double their rate and was told there's nothing they can do, I had to pay for the entire year for my one month's completely ineffective service. To refuse to refund and cancel a subscription after providing no service, after multiple requests and providing such a HORRIBLE completely fraudulent product is SHAMEFUL. If there was a class action suit, I would sign on. If there is a lawyer who would like to begin the process, I will sign the complaint today.

Please tell everyone you know to avoid eHarmony. Online dating can work. There are honest and effective online dating sites out there. The top two competitors of eHarmony are both genuinely good sites. I know because I've used them since my experience with eHarmony. I sincerely hope others are more fortunate and learn of eHarmony's deception before signing up. Because eHarmony will steal your money and according to the dozens of other complaints I've since read, they will renew your contract and charge your credit card even after you've cancelled. eHarmony is clearly the Enron of online dating.

First of all, when I filled out my questionnaire I selected that I only wanted "white" matches. I entered a doomed relationship with this guy, and he has serious certifiable issues that need professional tending too. He said to me that he lied on his questionnaire to get matches.

When we first met in May, he thought it was appropriate to tell me that he used to be in a cult for ten years, and he wants to kill the cult leader. This is normal "hey how's it going?" table talk, well he thought it was. Being who I am I talked myself (quite stupidly) into giving him a chance. Anyhow on three separate occasions I attempted to end things with him, but he bullied and pushed his way back in. I realized it is not my duty to remain friends with the guy because he has none so that is done.

My complaint is that he lies on his questionnaire designed by eHarmony, and I told them twice about it in detail of his cult membership, his mentioning how he wants to kill the cult leader on several conversations, and nothing was done. I received an email but no address to respond to. When you verbally threaten to kill someone on numerous occasions that is serious. It tends to be the quiet unassuming ones that unleash mayhem.

Okay, I'm skeptical about this whole eHarmony and online dating sites in general. Has anyone actually found potential partners on these sites? Especially eHarmony, talk about a waste of my time and money. A long and tedious question and answer criteria which is as vague as looking through a fog at night. How can a computer determine what type of person is actually a match for you when YOU have a specific type in mind. I'm a very busy individual that believed that these types of dating sites would make it easy in the meeting and corresponding with potentials of the opposite sex. But it seems like it's far from that. Randomly matching me based on useless questions. When has the world gone so wrong that we rely on technology to match us based on ** questions that don't make the match-making process any easier?

Secondly I am finding that a majority of these dating sites are filled with "fillers" fake profiles to have the site more appealing. I'm sorry but the good old days of meeting people face to face is sort of dying. With the majority glued to the digital screen just goes to show that we are a generation that is being brainwashed by technology. My patience for these dating sites are growing thin as the choices are slim picking and to communicate further you have to pay more. You're being gouged by the membership and they want to gouge you some more with the confirmation of "read" or the emoticons and widgets. It's just absurd.

The service was terrible as well. Distance, ethnicity, age, and "with a picture" only matches were never, never honored. I was sent one from Ontario with no picture. I live in southeastern PA. I'm seeking legal avenues now. TOTAL RIP-OFF. DO NOT JOIN. PS. I want to throw a shoe at my TV every time that dork owner comes on with his goofy ad.

I have plenty of friends, a longstanding good job, good family relations, and a very long term relationship behind me - nothing defective/deal breaker about me - just looking for a nice, grounded person. So, being hopeful I completed the eHarmony questionnaire and until I complained and greatly restricted my geographic requirements, was getting only a very few "matches" (4-5 in first month) from across the country. They dwindled in the next couple of weeks and over 2 months out, I've gotten less than 5 "matches" in my state, 3 w/o photos and 1 of whom a 400 lb man (one of the ones with a pic) who says he can't live without chocolate. I noted in my profile and answers that healthy living and exercise is important to me. Total waste of the $170. Match is much, much better - I've had a good experience so far having signed up at the same time.

I signed up for a 6 -month membership. As time went on and I figured my membership must be ending soon, I went on the site and checked my emails regularly looking for a notification that the end of my subscription was approaching. I couldn't find that info anywhere. Today, I checked my cc statement online and noticed a $167.70 pending auto renewal charge from eHarmony. I immediately called to cancel and was told the 3-day refund policy didn't apply to auto renewals. I refused every refund offer the customer service rep offered short of a full refund. The closest I could get was 50%, which I also refused. I will settle for nothing less than a full refund of money. I didn't intend to spend and services that have not yet been rendered. I have filed a complaint with the BBB, disputed the charge with my bank (it's still pending since eHarmony just charged my card today), emailed and tweeted eHarmony. I will settle for nothing less than a full refund. Use Match.com or one of the many ethical dating sites. Apparently, eHarmony is run by crooks.

I signed up with eHarmony for the first time. I find their system difficult to use (especially on a Mac). In the rare instance when there was a match within 60 miles (I think that is more than fair) of my town, many of the profiles don't even have pictures. Doesn't seem like they have many members and the system is really cumbersome. In my opinion, it was a waste of money.

I joined eHarmony in November 2012 for three months. Had no contact from members and did not contact anyone on there. No one seemed to be my type. I started a relationship the following month and with a girl I met on another website and shut down my profile with eHarmony shortly afterwards. I had clicked do not renew when I set up my account on eHarmony and thought nothing of it after I discontinued using my profile on the site. I seldom use the low limit MasterCard I used to make the single first payment only paying the monthly bill and hardly ever using it as a back up when needed. I found out only this week of September 2013 that they have been taking money from the account every three months to the total now of $360.00 on top of the original payment of $120.00. The card also has multiple overcharge fees all of which has set me back over $450.00.

I disputed this as soon as I discovered it with my bank and so far it seems I just have to take it on the chin and pay it all. I've tried to call eHarmony and they are less than helpful offering to give back only the last of three payments they took or nothing at all which I refused. When challenged about where any information or confirmation could be found online to justify their robbery of my credit card they referred me to an email address they said was mine that I have never seen before and do not have the password for and have refused to send any correspondence to any other email address. I can't even look at my profile to get answers because it's closed. It made you answer a lot of "are you sure you want to leave eHarmony?" All of which I clicked yes and finally said "sorry to see you go." For all money I thought that was all that was needed to do to discontinue their terrible service and considering I clicked DO NOT RENEW I did not think nor did I give permission for any other payment to be taken from my account.

They said to me that apparently their service can automatically renew to maintain a continued service even if you clicked do not renew. They say my profile has been active the whole time referring again to the email address I've never seen before and have no password for. I've had to report the card lost or stolen to stop them stealing my money and I don't think I'm going to get my money back. I've no idea who to go to about this or how I can prove I closed the profile because no confirmation email was sent to me, or it was to this other email address I have no access to and never set up. They just put it all back on me, like I should have known and maybe they're right. If it looks too good to be true it's usually is.

I'm absolutely gutted. How can anyone get away with such conduct? I'm happily engaged now with the same girl since when I closed my profile with eHarmony. We marry next year, and this is not a happy ending story for eHarmony. I met her on RSVP. But she works for a bank as a manager and I've shown her what's happened and she can't even tell me how to get my money back. It's like the ultimate scam. These people at eHarmony have no moral compass at all, and I know now how they afford their prime time TV ads, and it's not because they're a really good dating site where you can meet the partner of your dreams. It's because they're really good at scamming people's bank accounts and getting off scot-free.

To anyone reading this please look somewhere else for your new partner. Most sites are cheaper and just as good and don't scam your bank account. I was on 7 sites at one stage and this is the only one I've had payment problems with. I'm not a competitor to eHarmony, I'm a tradesman in Sydney with no interests in the online dating game. I feel like the only way I can get them back for this is to write the most damming review ever put online about them. They are scammers with an advanced degree in advertising and a PHD in pushing the boundaries of FRAUD. I want my money back. All of it you MORALLY BANKRUPT **.

My best friend met her now husband on eHarmony so my parents signed me up on the site to see if I would have the same luck. Apparently she was one of the successful few. I've been very dissatisfied with this dating site. I see it advertised all the time on TV. I'll go days without matches and sometimes when I get matches, they have no pictures and will have random letters as their name and will even have a ZIP code as their location. I shouldn't have to look up a ZIP code to find out where they're from. When I change my preferences to be even tighter than they already are, eHarmony tells me to loosen them a bit.

I have tight preferences for a reason. I've had matches be in their early 20s and late 30s/early 40s (I'm in my late 20s) and I don't want that. I'd go to bar if I wanted 40-somethings to hit on me. The same goes with matching me with people out of state. If I lived on state borders, I wouldn't mind so much, but I live in the middle of the state and the state line of any state that borders mine is at least two hours away and I refuse to drive that far for a date. I'm not made of money to fill up my gas tank several days a week nor am I made of taking days off work to journey who knows where to meet someone face to face. Why match us with people who haven't been active in several months? What makes eH think we're going to wait around for someone who hasn't logged in in months?

I've been getting more and more frustrated with this dating site since I joined in February. In the time I've been part of eHarmony, I've been out with a handful of guys who would go on one date with me and then never contact me again. I went on about three or four dates with one guy and when I sent him eH Mail (we corresponded this way since before our first date) after the last date we went on, I never heard back from him either. Another guy and I communicated through all the steps and then when the "Dig Deeper" questions came about (I spent a lot of time answering the "Dig Deeper" questions he sent me), he never answered them.

I even skipped ahead to eH Mail and "nudging" to find out if he was going to respond back and still nothing even though his profile showed he was active that day. When it came time to answer the "Dig Deeper" questions, another guy I have most recently communicated with only gave about one sentence answers. No one should be allowed to submit answers that short on eHarmony. It's a pretty safe bet, I won't be replying to his answers because of that.

I wish my parents (who paid for my membership) could get their money back because this customer was not satisfied. EHarmony got paid to provide a service, but they did not deliver what they said they would. I'm better off joining free online sites because at least I won't have to worry about wasting my money, only my time if it doesn't work out. This site is definitely a waste of $167/year (especially since it was my parents' $167). If I had read the reviews of this site before they signed me up for this, I wouldn't be writing this today. The eHarmony app is a joke too. I can't even change my settings using the app. I have to login through my computer to change my settings. What good is an app if you can't do things like that?

Additionally, when filling out all the questions to get "matched" with someone there are spelling errors. As someone who is a spelling/grammar **, that doesn't make them look good. While they allow general feedback, they only allow you to write a paragraph. Clearly a paragraph is not enough to express how I feel about their site, but I guess I just have to deal. If the opportunity arises, I'll definitely be onboard with being part of a lawsuit with this dating site. Do not use eHarmony, unless you really want to be disappointed and write a review like this.

Ok so I was surprised with a $167 dollar auto charge from eHarmony this morning when I wasn't set up to be auto charged. I'm pissed. I contacted them and they lady said, "Oh I see it's turned off," but then tried to back out of what she said and said that it wasn't refundable. She refused to let me speak to anybody else and said they would contact me via email and that I should respond ASAP and then they would let me know of their decision and that she couldn't guarantee I'd get my money back, and I said, "That's fine but I can guarantee you I WILL get my money back because your company is the one that messed up."

So while I'm waiting on that email (that took her over 45 min to send) I contacted my bank to see what I could do if they refuse to give me my money back. I explained to the girl what happened and she said I could dispute it but then she said, "But technically this is fraud because you didn't authorize them to take money at this time." She put me on hold to verify with the fraud dept. She came back and said, “It is absolutely fraud,” and that I'm going to have to cancel my debit card but they would express FedEx me one and I’ll get a new one on Tuesday. She said after it posts that I would go online, file a claim and that within 5 days, will get my money back (maybe sooner).

So I asked her what if this company tries to say it’s a legit charge, and she says they don't have a leg to stand on, and that she's even mad for me because its complete **. If this happened to you CONTACT YOUR BANK. Eharmony WILL NOT do anything for you, and they know they are wrong. If your bank is as customer driven is mine then they'll tell you to do what mine did. I joined eHarmony because I do not want to have children, nor do I want someone who has children. I thought this would be a good way to weed out men who do not fit this criteria. I created a profile requesting this. After they sent me my first matches, I immediately saw that many of them already have children. I came to realize that the site listed them as not having children "at home". I called and asked if there was a way to change this criteria and they said no. I later asked to cancel my one year membership and get a refund because I felt that this was misleading. I joined in April 2013. They had charged my credit card a promotional rate of $63.80 in April, May, and June. They refunded my last payment of $63.80 and closed my account in June. This means that I paid $64 for April and $64 for May.

I emailed and asked if they could either leave my account open for the amount of months I paid for (broken down to $16 per month) or have me pay their regular amount for the two months I was a member, since $64 per month is too high. They never responded. I emailed two more times and even called to request a response. I still did not receive one. I then called and asked for a supervisor. The customer service rep refused to connect me with one. I demanded to be transferred to a manager and finally I was connected to one who told me that my emails were ignored because my original request was answered. I explained that my follow up requests were repeatedly ignored. She told me to start a new email, which I did.

I then asked for them to just reopen my account and recharge me the $64 so I wouldn't have to pay so much for only two months. I told them I was never even given an option for how I wanted this handled, and now it is too late. They still said no. They are misleading with their criteria (for children), they send very few matches, and most of the matches they do send are "outside" of your criteria (geographically, age, etc). Most of all, their customer service is horrible. I would never recommend this site to anyone.

I should have come here first before signing up with them. First of all, I signed up for the year subscription that is supposed to be billed in 3 installments of approximately $32. You would think that meant once a quarter. I just checked my account, and the next installment will come out on August 20, 2013. That's just one month since I signed up and paid the first installment. Also, I cannot cancel until the final installment is paid.

As far as matches go, I gave an age window of up to 17 years my senior, and they still flag it as being "too restrictive". The so-called matches they have shown me are not only NOTHING like me, but also most of them are outside both my age limitations and the travel radius I asked for. Of the 7 they sent me, 6 live at least 1,000 miles away. Also - and I'll be completely honest here - NONE of them are my idea of handsome. There was only one who was, and upon reading his profile I discovered he was a complete narcissist.

Also, why is it that I've only gotten 7 matches in as many days if this company truly has as many members as it claims? They keep trying to push their "what if" tab on me. When I look at it, the men in it are more of the same. This company is a rip off. I urge anyone reading this to RUN as fast as you can from them.

After having just seen their ad on TV (not even the free weekend ad), I decided to try them once again. After a few quick minutes, with really only one question (involving marriage) outside of signing in, there were absolutely no matches, at all, out of all the members they claim they have for me?! The company is not behaving in the single public's best interest. Trying to appear down to earth in ads, they are actually elitists with their own agenda. I've tried them before, with disappointing results. They don't actually take in mind what you've specially said you're attracted to, but administer a bunch of psych tests, that take a great deal of time, & you still can't even see a picture of potential dates!

Even when they have special weekends, there doesn't seem to be a pulse with this company, with any response of any kind. My experience is not unique with them from what I've heard. They seem to be exploiting the single community financially, with complete disregard to what they are saying they are looking for. At the end of the day, eHarmony says communication is important - yet they themselves seriously lack in that (other than canned articles written by others), as well as listening. I don't need someone to tell me what I want. I know what I want. Checking them out was seeing if someone I could be interested in signed up. Can't believe the numbers of clients they say they have. I have received 7-8 "matches" a day since joining in February. It takes so long to get through their questionnaire. I thought that meant they were really figuring people out, NOT! It's just that old theory "if you throw enough manure at the wall, maybe eventually some will stick." I met one local man after about the first 10 days. The most compatible cheater I ever met - ha! He just knew that he wouldn't get busted by his wife quite as easily by having his mug on eHarmony vs. one of the free sites. And you know the "What If" feature? "What if you broadened your search criteria just a little..."

Let's just say that if any of those gentlemen are indeed my "perfect match", I'd like to be put out of my misery right away! This is what you get for paying all that money and spending all that time answering question after question after question? And half the questions have misspelled words in them, ridiculous punctuation errors and tragically out-of-date stuff. It's June 2013 and they still have Obama vs. Romney questions. A total waste of money, in my opinion.

In looking back, I realized that they have kept my profile "alive" when I had initially tried the "free weekend trial" over a year ago. This experience, so far, has been pretty disappointing. She said my profile was set up wrong. I agreed to try. Nothing changed. I still saw 90% of the suggested matches many miles away. Way too many matches without any photo, and way too many out of my age request. So I called again. Unbelievably, I let them talk me into more changes in profile and another trial. Bad me - I agreed. No changes. 4 days later, I called back for the refund. They have refused. I recommend this site to no one!!!

After the annual expiration date of 05/21/13, I still got charged for $19.95 month to month on 05/22/13. I agree that the match pool is misleading as they leave up inactive profiles and profiles of people who just did the "free communication weekend," but did not join. So many of my matches are inactive, out of the area requested by me or simply poor matches that it is not worth my time to even log on, let alone worth the money I have paid for a 3-month membership. They are refusing to refund even a portion of my money, stating that I have passed the period allowable for refunds.

Upon further review, this time period is 72 hours. How anyone could figure out in that space of time that their entire site is a sham is beyond me as communication, when it happens, is slow paced and their website has endless technical glitches and does not appropriately refresh so every log on takes entirely too much time. I complained several times about the technical glitches and the quality of the matches, to which they responded with tech support (verbatim from their website, which I had read and was not solving the problem) and propaganda about "broadening my criteria and giving the process time." Clearly, this is all designed to string you along while they take your money.

I don't feel that they have fulfilled their end of the agreement and feel that I am entitled to a refund because of that. Further to that, I feel like they are taking advantage of their users who buy into their advertising and promises, only to have a disappointing and frustrating experience in which they will be lucky if they meet one person who even comes close to being a good match.

All the searches come back "No match now" where the other services provide many matches. The questions to set up the profile are endless and stupid, especially with no matches. Please do not use eHarmony and tell everybody you know not to use it. Put them out of business. Good luck!

eHarmony makes you go through days of questions and preferences before you even know what kind of people they have in your location. Once you join, that's when you find out they only have a handful of people. So they try to get you to broaden your preferences. When I called them to cancel the trial period, the representative told me that there will be more matches sent to me that lived within the 30 miles of my location (which was a must). And after I agreed not to cancel, they continued to send me matches of people who lived over an hour away and some were even across the country. When I called them back, now they were okay with canceling my membership but told me I couldn't receive a refund since it was after the trial period. They are a ripoff company targeting innocent people who are just looking to find someone special. I would tell anyone who is thinking of using this site to save their money and stay away from this website. Good luck to everyone, and I hope you find that someone special without eHarmony.

I've found on several occasions on these dating sites that I'll talk to a guy through email for a few days then we exchange numbers and everything seems to be going great. We talk a few times a day (or at least text a few times a day), and this will go on for about a week (or at least until it's time for us to meet). The day we are supposed to meet in person, they cancel! This has happened to me several times. It's always with the ideal guy I have in mind (size, career and future goals). This can not be a coincidence. I'm convinced they hire people to occupy me (us) until either our trial period passes or the time passes where it's too late to cancel the account without being charged.

eHarmony, I thought you would be better than Match. But their whole, tedious, mind-controlled safe way of getting to know the other person is a total scam and no better than any other site! They're charging up for this **. Shame me once, shame on you. Shame me twice, shame on me.

I signed up for eHarmony in December 2012. After completing a long questionnaire, I was given the names and locations of possible matches. Most of these matches were in my area. However, when I signed up for the service, I didn't see those matches again. I was matched with guys that lived in Canada, Louisiana, California, Wisconsin, and anywhere but my area (Washington DC). The individuals on the site were not my type. The other 10 guys I was interested in never responded. If I subtract the matches outside of my geographic area from the ones in the DC area, there were only 5 guys, 3 of which were weird and totally not my type.

I am extremely disappointed. One individual contacted me and told me he only wanted sex and a submissive woman. If I want to be insulted and offended, I don’t need to pay for that. I can be insulted/offended for free with the ** in my area. It’s a total waste of time and money. Hopefully I will get my money back since I cancelled within the 3 day window. If not, I hope this review helps someone and they will learn from my mistake and not give eHarmony any money!

EHarmony is a rip-off. I joined 11/11/12 and by 12/12, they took a total $150.00. I was hospitalized on 11/30/12. I cancelled, however was told I would not receive a refund. I have filed a complaint with FTC and FCC regarding not clearly informing the consumers of their rights to cancel. Plus, when you’re logged in, the option to cancel is not available.

eHarmony was more than disappointing when I had a membership. I did not receive a single match that was indeed a match for me. Many were more than an hour away and some in other states. I cancelled it six months ago and turned off the auto-renew feature (which is a horrible feature) and haven't logged on since. Imagine my surprise when I had a charge on my credit card this month from them. (I can't even log into my account.) I called and customer service said they would not reverse the charge and would send me a link to get into my account (which was never done). What an awful service. Total scam!

I am giving them one star for two reasons:

    1. It's impossible to cancel your subscription - I turned off auto-renew option three times - and three times I still saw charges on my credit card. Their Help desk keeps telling me that I didn't turn it off properly. Sure enough, I asked the help desk to turn the auto-renew for me and send me an email confirmation that they did that and what happens? I get another charge on my credit card! They only refunded 50% after I complained.

    2. They send you inactive matches and matches which are not screened properly. Countless times I got matched with a profile that had a landscape as their profile picture and a "fjwgbkwucgsnkugsnilugniru" as a profile description (in order to publish your profile you need to type in at least 150 signs in the field). Seriously? I thought they really screen profiles! Screenshot attached.

It's disappointing, because I really had high hopes.

Beware of unauthorized charges from eHarmony. This is the most unethical business ever! I cancelled my subscription twice by clicking on the Cancel Automatic Renewal link and I was still charged twice! Beware, should you need help, the customer service will not respond to your emails. When you call them, they will blame your account renewal on you, saying that they cannot see a date on the system that would show that my automatic renewal was cancelled! Can you believe that? Shocking! Their system is faulty and the whole eHarmony business is based on screwing people over like that. They are a bunch of crooks! What a nice way to make money - tell people to click on the link to cancel the subscription but still charge them anyway when they do and tell them it's their own fault! Do yourself a favor, save your money and avoid this site. Otherwise, you'll end up cancelling your credit card to stop them charging you.

Like many of you, I've never written a customer complaint about a product or service. In today's world of online scams, more of us need to speak up! If you're considering a trial membership with eHarmony, beware that their website is designed to steal from you every month after your trial's end date until you discover the charges on your credit card statement and call their 1-800 number. Although I changed my online account settings to turn off the auto renew feature and although I deleted all of my credit card information from my online account - which was all done well before the end of my trial period, I discovered on my subsequent credit card statement that eHarmony charged me $29.95 for a new month after my trial.

Upon this discovery, I called the 1-800 number, expressed my frustration, and requested review of my account. The customer service rep stated that she could see that I discontinued use of the site well before the end of my trial, suggesting uncertainty about why my efforts to modify my account settings online to avoid future charges weren't effective. She then agreed to refund the $29.95 charge and to permanently cancel my account. Well, if this was the end of the story, I wouldn't be here writing today.

Watching for the refund on the following month's credit card bill, I discovered the $29.95 refund plus another $29.95 charge for a second new month of service. After calling and speaking with another customer service rep today, I was told that they "can't refund a charge on a closed account", and the previous month's rep must have agreed to refund the second monthly charge, which was a charge completely unknown to me. The takeaway from all of this is that eHarmony's deceptive online practices tricked me into believing I could modify my settings to remove automatic renewals. If you choose to try the service, which I don't recommend, make sure to set a reminder on your calendar to call and cancel your account before your trial end date, requiring confirmation from them in writing that no future charges will be processed. Previous experiences with Match.com were much better, so definitely check it out if you're looking to give online dating a whirl.

If I can convince just one person not to join, my time writing this will be well spent. I joined for 3 months at $9.95 per month (after being bombarded with ads from them for $40 per month). Their website is very confusing to use. Clicking on links takes you to a lot of dead ends and some links don't work at all. It is like no one at EH did any testing of their website. It is hard to tell who is communicating with you.

My biggest peeve is that most of the people on EH are not paying members. People sign up for free communication weekends (which are misleading because you are restricted from full communication), but then don't pay to subscribe. EH leaves their profiles up, however, making it seem like there are lots of people for you to contact. EH also makes it very difficult for you to remove or hide your profile, unlike Match.com. This site is pretty much a complete rip-off. They are not out to help you meet the love of your life: they just want to take your money.

I did not sign up for the free three months, but when I called the eHarmony "Help" line, they told me that I was sent an email when I first signed up about the free three months. Now it is September, and I found a bill for $29.95 on my credit card from eHarmony. They tell me that now that my free three months are up, I am on auto-renewal. I tried using the eHarmony free weekend during the Labor Day holiday. It was advertised "Communicate with your potential matches all weekend for free" and when I tried using it, there was a $1.99 charge which I paid. eHarmony took the $1.99 from my bank account and an additional $99 in unauthorized charges. I contacted eHarmony who said I have no account but refuses to refund the $99 charge on my account. I contacted my bank and was told I have to close the debit card account for them to do anything, leaving me without a way to pay my bills on time. I believe, based upon some of the complaints on here, that the state’s attorney general should begin an investigation concerning these practices for fraud.

At the end of the questionnaire, they said I was not qualified because I was separated. They could not have told me that at the beginning before wasting an hour of my time? Then, I tried to email them that this was unprofessional and I was blocked from emailing them. It is false advertising and a waste of time.

eHarmony ran an ad stating that for 4 days (Fri., Sat., Sun., and Monday) through the Labor day weekend, you could use the site for free to meet people. So for the first time in 2 years since my husband passed, I decided to try it. I filled out the forms and received some responses quickly. When I tried to respond back, the message came up that I had to join the membership. It then said for me to upload a photo; when I tried to do that, the message came back again and said that I had to join. I am on a very strict budget since my husband’s passing and cannot afford this. That is why, when they said it would be free for the 4 days, I thought this would be good. How much more of a rip-off in advertising can you get than what E Harmony is trying to pull. I hope, as a consumer, that there is still justice for false advertising. And by looking at all the complaints, you surely have enough to be able to do something.

I nicely filled out a lot of the questions and they told me I was not confident nor compatible with any of the matches in their system and it will be better if I had dating advice and know myself better. I am not happy because everyone always says, "Best of luck finding that special someone." Do they even know how hard that is? I will never look for another dating site again. I thought I had canceled the service but recently had a $140 debit out of my checking account for another six months. I called immediately to get it refunded. Even though they could see that I had not logged into their site for 5 months (so clearly was not using it nor was interested in using it), they refused to refund my money. Their excuse was that they put it in writing that the membership would automatically renew. They cover their ** by putting things in writing so that they can practice these unethical methods of stealing people's money. It doesn't matter that they set up auto renewals. I recently filled out a profile on eHarmony, complete with the personality questions they asked. According to eHarmony, this is a point by point personality profile based on psychological data, etc. in finding the perfect match. A little background about myself should be told before I go on about the matching. I am a recovering alcoholic/addict with 5 years clean and sober. I do not drink and I do not drug. My sobriety will not survive if I get into a relationship with someone who is not sober. When I was asked, "Do you drink?" I answered never. The next question was, "What would you be willing to accept from a potential partner?" I answered, "Drinks a few times a year." I was then asked how important this is to me and I answered very important on the sliding scale.

When I finished and checked my matches, everyone (there was 7 total) indicated that they drink several times a day! Are you kidding me? My only hope for a relationship based on this so-called psychological profile is to settle for a drunk? Can someone please tell me the name of any shrink that would say that I should date an alcoholic or drug user? I understand that this was only an online questionnaire, they do not know my past. But when I say that I do not drink and it is very important that the person I am with at the most only drinks a few times a year and I am matched with drunks, I tend to believe that the whole psychological profile stuff they are pitching is a load of crap. Not wasting my time on eHarmony. Thanks for letting me vent.
