I spoke with a representative last year and requested that the payment protection be removed from my account. At that time it was removed but after several months it started to appear on my account again. I would like for Capital One to provide a document of some sort in which I agreed to this service. The payment protection has been added to my account and I have been charged without prior authorization. I do not want payment protection on my account. I am requesting that it be removed and credit my account for all of the charges. Secondly, I have been billed for overlimit fees because of the unauthorized bill protection payment that continues to post on my account each month. I am also requesting all over limit fees that was billed that was caused by the payment protection fees. In addition, I would like a explanation as to why my bill cycle date changes each month ranging from due dates of 12 of the month to 15th of the month. The flexible due dates has caused a negative impact on my credit rating and please advise if this is a fair business practice.

I had a Capitol One credit card offered to me, via mail. They offered me a fixed rate of 4.9%. How could you refuse that? I accepted and received the card.
One time I made the payment that was received after 2:00 PM, so it was posted as received the following day. Because of that, it was listed as a late payment and they raised my interest to 7.9% (still good, but ridiculous that they could do that). They also told me that any time that happened they would raise the interest rate again.

I've been having problems accessing my account online for three months. Every month I call in and they say they are working on it.
This time I asked to speak with a supervisor and I ended up getting disconnected or hung up on four times. I wasted an hour of my life trying to get a resolution. Finally someone said he would help me. He put me on hold for about 10 minutes and a woman picked up and asked for my account number. I asked where the first guy was and she got indignant, would not answer my question and kept asking for my account number. When I told her about my disappointment with the service, she hung up on me.
I am very angry, but have no recourse but to change credit cards which is probably more trouble than it is worth.

We have had a Cap One Card for approx 10 years. The balance has been paid off every month regularly for at least the last four years. Our rate was 12.9%. This year, while often having a monthly balance of $9000, we would pay it in full that month. The payments are due the 21st. We found continuing difficulty trying to pay online, so we send the payment by mail.
In the last 12 months, they say we have been late twice. We know that one of the payments was sent on the 14th, and they say it was late by two days, another three days. They have now bumped the rate to 27.3%, even though we paid the amounts in full. One time in the last year, we did not pay the full amount, as we did not pay $4.63 out of $268. They charged us a finance charge on the $4.63, even thought there was no previous balance.
With a many year history of nearly flawless payments, they will not discuss this. They say it is in the agreement, which I cannot understand, despite an engineering degree.

I have not been able to access my online account in a month. Inevitably, I am forced to spend an hour trying to contact customer service and negotiate the telephone payment fee away since I can't pay online.
I obtained this card in college and it now carries a 27% interest rate! Other accounts I have with other lenders are in the single digits; however, Capital One will not lower their rate. It's alright for me since the balance is paid and I only occasionally use it to keep it active as it's good to have a seven year old active account in your credit history.

On January 8, 2008 I got a new credit card from Capital One, taking advantage of advertised offer of 5.99% for life. I promptly transferred $7,500 worth of other debt to this card and set up payment via the web. I paid $250 on January 22nd, in advance of the first billing (which I have never received). I have attempted to make a second payment (still having received no statements) but the account is locked on line and I am unable to make a payment.
After reading literally hundreds of complaints against this credit card and bank, I now realize they are VIPERS and certainly up to no good.

I had a $500.00 credit limit and didn't like the interest rate (21%), so I paid them off and wanted to close it out. They then lowered my interest rate, and they also gave me a $5000.00 credit line and 14% rate-- too high yet. I found that out later after it got $2000.00 higher, so I did a small balance transfer and knew I wasn't over the limit because my statements would be late, etc.
It was making my credit go bad--over limit fees and so forth--so when I did a small bal transfer of $1500.00 to another credit card, I knew I couldn't be over the limit again. Then I refinanced my house, paid them in full, and told them to close me out; then they tried talking me into staying with them by raising my limit again. I told them NO, you had your chance the other times that I called and complained and you did NOTHING. I told them to close it NOW and send out a letter showing it was closed. I got my letter and will not deal with them again. I also had to pay my wife's off; they were going over the limit with late fees. Now we both don't have Capital one cards. Are these the same people who changed their name to Credit One because of all these complaints, or what?

I have not used the card for years, and 3 years later a collection agency called me and said I have a balance of $1600.00--all coming from LATE FEES. I ignore it, and it dents my credit rating. I opened again a Capital One account 4 years ago; in Jun. 2007 I paid it off and caledl to close the account. On Oct. '07 the collection dept. called and said I have balanced, and I paid it off ($80.00)--from LATE FEES. Today I got the same call again saying I have balance of $69.00. I do not understand how the closed accounts are still able to be charged. They always hang up, especially if the call is from our friend in India.
My credit rating is down, and it's wasting my time.

Capital One mailed a credit card offer with a limit of $20,000 to my 2+ year old. The most disturbing thing is that is had her nickname, not formal name--meaning that someone very close to us (3 possible entities by which we signed our child up for activities) compromised the confidentiality of our information. I have been in contact with Capital One since October 10th to identify the lead source to no avail.
It's the same old story, I don't have access, I cannot transfer you to an executive, stuck in automated attendants or on hold for excessive periods of time. No email or direct phone numbers, not even someone's last name. So private yet no regard for mailing solicitation to a child--not to mention the most customer service insensitive company that I have experienced. Brutal.
Invasion of privacy and breach of confidentiality of minor's information.

Capital One sent me a letter in Dec. '07 offering to turn my 98,438 miles into $475 cash redemption. On December 19, 2007 I called the number they had given (1 800 228-3001) and requested cash. Their agent said cash would come in 10 days and gave me a confirmation #001512381. On January 28, 2008 I placed a follow-up call, and after talking to either five or six agents, two of whom were supervisors, was told I could not get cash as the amount was issued as a credit and could not be changed.
I am out $475. Their original letter said the following: Redeeming your miles for cash is simple 1. Call 1 800-228-3001 2. Enter your account number 3.Choose the cash back option.

I had an account w/ Capital One years ago. I was trying to build my credit back up. My husband began his own business and times were very hard; I almost lost my house. I called Capital One, and they offered a 1099-Misc. in lieu of paying. I could claim the goods I received with the card as income instead of paying the debt. That was 2 years ago. Yesterday, I tried to use my bank card at the grocery store and was declined. I put my check in the bank Thursday (the only check for two weeks), so I knew I had the money. I called my bank when I got home to discover that Capital One put a Restraining Lien on it. I called the attorney's office; they will release the lien if I tell my bank they can every cent I have left. I just mailed out checks for my utilities and mortgage. I offered what I have left less $100 to get a bit of food and gas to get to work, but they refuse. I am just so upset. I have not heard from Capital One in 2 years! They even gave me loan in May, 2007. (That's paid off.)
I think they want me to lose my job. I have no gas money. I asked the attorney's office for a payment plan, and they laughed, told me they had the account for months. I explained that I never heard from them. When they verified my address, it was wrong. But they said the mail never came back so in their eyes I received it. I had to get money out of my kid's banks to buy noodles for dinner. I would have paid the debt if I wasn't double crossed. Claim as income, then pay it anyway! What kind of deal is that?

I have had a business CC with Capitat One for about the last 4 or 5 yrs. I have since stopped using the card. Without detailed observance of my balances and payments applied, it occurred to me to start looking into the reason why the balance didn't seem to reflect the payments I had been making. I am trying to see my balance online, so that I can make a final payment to completely pay off the account. (The card itself has been cut up and trashed for about 5 mos.) I have not used it at all; the last payment made was an electronic transfer of 1/18/08. My bank has already declared it was electronically applied to my account number at Cap One, yet it has not cleared my bank account. Certainly by now--Jan. 27th, 2008--it should have cleared my checking account within 3 days of being sent.
I have been trying to access my online account with Cap One now for 3 days, but I keep getting "your browsers cookies are not enabled" ... cant even get to the actual login for credit cards from the CapitalOne.com web site. No phone numbers are present under contact Cap One, and after reading these histories posted here I really don't want to experience the frustration of calling their customer service in India. I think I will however, or as soon as I can log into my account, copy everything and send it on to our state's Attorney General. As I suspected, I think they purposely hold payments so they can apply their $39.00 late fee. Do ya think? Hard to get sticky gooey Tar / OR / Capital One off your hands!
By not applying payments when received, Capital One fraudulently charges excessive over-limit and past-due fees, which are 2 to 3 times a minimum payment. They also raise interest rates without your authorization or knowledge. In the small print on your credit card, they allow themselves to raise your interest rate with ANY past due accounts. Usually on the same date the account goes past due, and the late fee applied, your payment posts to the account. I don't want to do business with crooks like Capital One.

I paid off my account and closed it, but they keep sending me bills and now a collection notice. This is not fair to consumers like me who do what is asked of them. I'm sure I'm not the only person they do this to. Most people probably just keep paying when they don't owe anymore.
I'm sure this is stressful to a lot of people because they and I are losing good credit scores and chances at better scores.

After being with Capital One for approx. 3 years, Capital One rejected my online payment, even though it was confirmed. They never sent me anything to the contrary and by the time it was all settled, they not only charged me excessive late fees, they reported my credit as 60 days late. All this over a payment minimum of $15 with a balance of less than $100.
Then 4 months ago Capital One increased my credit line from $300 to $1700. I was very responsible to pay the balances down during this time. I went on line to make my payment today and my account comes as OVER THE LIMIT. There is a balance of $509+. I made a payment of $500 to the account so I wondered why the account was over the limit.
I finally got through to someone after 45 minutes, and was told that they lowered my limit to $500, with no notice to me.

I've had heard so many horror stories of Capital One not wanting to cancel accounts, there is no way I can pay this if they start adding ridiculous finance charges. I think this is the point. I don't want this account and I don't want to deal with these people. If the gave this to collections, how are they allowed to change the rules toward the end? They don't even have the right amount of what I owe compared to what the collections agency has. I was told by a woman named Rose that she would contact their liaison at said agency and confirm but I don't believe them and I don't trust them. At least the agency SEEMS to be on my side and have each and every payment logged. Do I have any rights at all?

For 4 months I have tried in vain to get my account issues resolved to no avail. I am at my wits end and would like to pursue legal action. This particular account started off as a secured credit card for $1,500. Over the course of years, with a great payment record, Capital One increased my credit limit to $2,300 without my consent. No biggie. Fast forward to years later, and I was late with a payment; on the last day of my account being forwarded to their collections dept, I paid the balance in full.
They accidentally shut my account off and apologize for the mistake and promise to issue a new card. They do not, will not, cannot or offer multiple explanations as to why I have not gotten my card--and make repeated assurances that everything is resolved and a new card will be sent out. Months later, no card, no call backs...no competence. I asked them to refund my original deposit and got a royal run around and hung up on. I have dealt with 25 operators in 4 different departments in 2 different countries, and still no card, no refund, no explanation--and I am done dealing with them.
I have no card, probably adverse credit reporting on their behalf, and no refund for my initial security deposit.

Capital One continues to assess an over-limit fee even though I pay more than the required payment each month. Their annual fee pushed me over the limit ($500.00) even though I called and was given a total available credit well within the limit for an emergency auto repair in December. I have disputed the amount and received no reply from them. My online statement shows a balance of $458.03, yet the paper statement received today shows a balance of $531.28 with an additional over-limit fee from Dec. 28th of $39.00. This bank over the past year has been consistent with intentionally misleading and incorrect financial data on credit card statements. They repeatedly assess interest charges when none are due, requiring me to call and endure long wait times with several transfers before I get to someone who fixes the mistake. Each time, they promise to correct the glitch in their system, but after several months, incorrectly assessed interest charges ensue.
I recently sent a lengthly letter explaining in detail the problems encountered in the past several months; their reply was a form letter explaining how interest charges are calculated. I believe this is a pattern that is more than likely repeated with thousands of customers, many who aren't aware they're being overcharged. Hours and hours of phone calls certainly take their toll on my emotional well being. Though I manage to recover all overcharges, the time required to accomplish this certainly adds up.

I have had a Cap One credit card for about 8 years and have had a limit of $7000.00 most of that time. I have paid this account off many times. I had them lower my limit, and then I went over my limit without knowing it, no flags --and now what a nightmare. They would not even try to work it out with me. They hit me with 27% interest, $100.00 plus in over charges, and what was $300.00 over is now $400.00 plus all the charges they can find. I explained that I didn't know when I went over and asked if they just extend the money. NO way, when they can charge what they want.
I have been wronged, insulted, yelled at, they have sent me many rejection letters making it look like I am wanting more credit. They hurt people! I can see why so many people end up bankrupt; they get in to deep and will never be able to pay back the debt. I sent back the check for a $5000 dollar loan approval to whoever at Capital One "approved" the loan. The loan I applied for was to be financed for 24 months at 9.99% interest. I wanted the money to pay off another loan at a higher interest of 15.99%. Their credit services would only approve this Capital One personal loan at 14.99%. I'm sorry, but for 1% difference, it just isn't worth it, to accept this loan. I went on-line at www.capitaloneloans.com to email this information to them, and of course they do not supply such a courtesy. I called and talked to a Crystal, and she told me to just rip up the check. How business-like of them to give their operators such instructions?
I wanted to know why I wasn't approved for the lower interest rate and wanted to please talk to someone who could tell me this information. Crystal told me, "We don't have any information as to the reason, and so there is no one you can speak with." I have another Capital One credit card which is ironically at an interest of 13.74%, lower than this "personal" loan. I am ripping this card up today, and it will be paid off in a few months. I will never apply for anything with Capital One again, so they needn't ask me: WHAT'S IN YOUR WALLET? It certainly won't be a Capital One Card.

In Jan. '07 I paid a $35 fee to have a payment added to the end of my note due to financial difficulty. In March I was notified that I was 2 payments behind, and late fees accrued. I was told it was too late to add a payment to the end because I must be caught up. The phone calls started to come in every 20 minutes on auto dialer and would continue non-stop until I wrote the company a letter asking for all communications to be done by mail. After this request, I tried to get a hold of customer service to try to get caught up on my van payments. At several different times I was transferred to the finance dept. and reached a voice mail--never to have my calls returned. I logged on to online banking and set up auto payments for both my van and my car, with both approved. Then 30 days later I received notification in the mail that I can settle my accounts with 65%. I again attempted to call.
I continued making payments when I could, but the interest and late fees make it so I will never be caught up. I was told at the last call that I don't qualify for auto payments until I completely catch up my account. If I continue paying, I am getting nowhere because it is all applied to late fees and interest. The company won't even try to help me catch up.
I am a mother. The late fees and interest kill my budget, and no matter how much I make I can't catch up. I feel that I fell behind after they refused my payment and also refused to let me make auto payments. I feel as if they wanted me to be indebted to them more than what I should be. When I financed my car at the beginning of the increased gas prices, I asked for financing other than Capitol One because of their practices. I was told that it wouldn't be Capitol and signed papers for Onyx Corp.--only to later find out that they are a subsidiary to Capitol One. If I'd known that I might not have financed that car at all. I just want to catch up, and pay my debt without all the extra charges and interest being tacked on.

Several weeks ago I was unable to make purchases with my card with no notice. I've had a business account with Capital One for several years and have always either paid the entire balance, or made 4-5 times the minimum payment. Without warning, my card was rejected. When I called to inquire, I was told that the computer put a hold on my account, and that it was for my protection against fraud. I was also told that I should have received notification by phone, email, or letter. They do not have my email address, and no one called. If the notification was by letter, the hold on my card would have already been in effect without my knowing. To date, I've not received any notification by any of those methods. When I asked to have my account checked, there was no different activity on the cards, just the same vendors that I ordinarily used. Even after talking to a supervisor, I have not received an explanation that makes sense as to why my card was locked. The only answer was that the computer did it for my protection.
How would they feel if they were standing in front of a merchant and their card was rejected for no reason? A few years ago I canceled my personal card with Capital One because one customer service rep told me I could use a check from them to pay for a purchase. I did, and the check was returned. When I called, another employee and supervisor told me something totally different. When I asked why, they told me sometimes the company would allow the checks, and sometimes not. I asked what was the criteria, and they could not give me an answer. Again, my personal account was always paid timely and above the minimum. Since their decision-making (re: their account holders) was so capricious, I paid off the balance and canceled the card. The majority of their customer service reps are either difficult to understand, or just plain rude.

I called my card today to get my balance details and found out to my surprise that I had no available credit. I had only utilized $1905.39, so I should have had a credit of $94.61. Then, I got another surprise: my next monthly payment due on 2/11/08 is 305.39. I immediately contacted Capital One and was told that there was an error with their system, and that I was not supposed to be increased to $2000.00 but instead to $1600.00--leaving me responsible for whatever amount went over the $1600.00 to be paid on my next bill.
I can understand the problem with the system, but they should not be billing me $305.39 to be paid in one month. They should have billed me according to the $2000.00 limit considering it was their system that failed. Also, they should consider that my last month's statement still had my credit limit at $2000.00. They never even sent me a letter informing me of this problem. This is completely unjustifiable. Now I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to come up with the money for this payment. I have no dings on my credit and try hard to keep it clean. It frustrates me to think Capital One can do this. Credit is too important. I strongly discourage anyone from getting a credit card from Capital One. I obtained my Capitol One credit card in 2006. I followed my usual practice of paying the full balance on my monthly statement. No problems, no fees. I arranged to have my statements handled electronically rather than by postal mail, which was fine until July 2007, when Capitol One mysteriously chose to revert me to paper statements. Nevertheless, I paid the full amount I owed, and incurred no finance or interest charges.
The paper statements were replaced by electronic ones in November 2007, again not at my instigation. I arranged to pay November's balance through my bank. On the due date for the bill in mid-December 2007, I was aghast to see that the payment had not been received. Whether this was my bank's or Capitol One's fault is hard for me to discover.
I paid the Dec statement, which included a finance charge for late payment, in full, and on time. As far as I could tell by looking at my account history on Capitol One's Web site, I owed nothing. After faxing and mailing my information over 15 times and then sending a letter to the president of Capital One, a payment was made on my account October 16th 2007. The following month, my account was paid late and continues to be paid late.
Two days ago, I contacted Capital One and the payment protection division to ensure that the payment was not paid late again and this morning, I had to contact them again since the payment did not post.

I can't stand Capital One. I've had a credit card with them for seven years, and up until recently, the interest rate was 9.9%. Out of the blue, they bumped it up to 15.40%, and I have a perfect credit rating with no missed or late payments with them or anyone else. The first call to them was answered by someone with very broken English. After getting frustrated, I called again and spoke to a woman who told me that because I rarely use the card to make purchases, they raised my interest rate to compensate for that. When I asked if they were going to lower the rate since I complained...she said no, there was nothing Capital One could do for me, just to use my card more, and that way I could earn more rewards.
Can you believe that? Since the balance was $400, I closed the account and paid it off in full. I will never have another card with this company because in my opinion - they're rip off artists.

I thought last month I settled my complaint with Capital One. I took out a 0% 18-month loan of $4972.00. I paid a transaction fee of $99.44. Last month (Dec), I was told if I paid off my credit card purchases, I would not be charged any interest. I was charged $73.89 on an outstanding balance of $121.29. I was able to resolve the problem, and they removed the finance charge. This month I was hit with a finance charge of $76.58. I only made 1 purchase of $73.29. The rest of the balance should be at 0%.
I called Capital One today, and now I was told that they pay off the low rate first before the high rate is paid. Last month I was told the other way around. I told them that they are a bunch of crooks, and if there is a class action suit against them, my name will be on it. I will have to take money out my savings to pay it off. I will get even by e-mailing every one I know and urging them to close--and warn them not to open an account with Capital One.

An electronic debit was made from my credit union bank account to Capital One on December 30, 2007. It should have posted that date, as it was before the cut-off time. Now it's January 15th and still hasn't posted to Capital One. Now I've incurred a $39 late fee and another $39 over-credit limit fee. Talking to the customer service does NO good. It's obvious from all these similar complaints--that Capital One is to be hated and avoided at all costs.
I'd estimate that over $1,000 of totally unnecessary over-limit and late fees have been assessed my account, simply because Capital One refuses to credit payments on-time. This company should be driven out of business and a class action suit be filed to give customers back their money the company stole from them.

My Capital One No Hassle Rewards credit card is due to expire at the end of the month, but as of today I still had not received a replacement card. Thinking it had gotten lost in the mail, I called to ask for a replacement card. The representative I spoke with told me that Capital One's policy is not to send a replacement card unless the card holder calls to request replacement. She explained that a new card would take four business days to process and then an additional five to seven business days to receive. If I needed my card sooner than that, I could pay $16.00 and receive my card in three business days.
I was outraged upon hearing this. I have had numerous different credit cards for the past 20 years and until this time have always routinely had replacement cards sent to me without my requesting them. This is not merely an oversight or poor customer service on Capital One's part, but rather a deliberate scheme to bilk desperate cardholders out of $16 when they find that they will imminently be without a valid credit card. I asked for a supervisor and complained, and he agreed to waive the expedited fee after I told him that I was going to file a complaint with the Attorney General against Capital One.

When you ask Capital One how much available credit you have, they will mislead you. For example, my payment due date is the 4th of each month. I make my payment before the due date. If on the 7th, I ask them what is my available credit. They will tell me a certain amount such as $100.00. So I am under the impression that I can charge no more than $100.00. However, they fail to tell me that financial charges will be deducted on the 10th. They deduct $25.00, as an example, leaving me with only $75.00 true available credit. But they don't tell me this ahead of time. So I go over my limit and am charged $39.00 for going over.
In the true spirit of honesty they should say to me- Sir, it shows you have $100, but we will be deducting on the 10th financial charges which will reduce the $100. We can give you a rough estimate of how much will be deducted, etc. We do not want you to go over your limit and be charged $39. We are you friend, ad nausium.

I sent a payment of $225.00 per check on October 12, 2007. This check was never submitted to my banking institution for payment by Capital One. Capital One stated that the check was returned for insufficient funding on October 23, 2007, but I have overdraft protection on my account. I was charged a return check fee of $29.00 on December 4, 2007, a past due fee of $35.00 on December 7, 2007 and a $29.00 over-limit fee as well. However, November's statement did not reflect this. I submitted a letter requesting a copy of the check to see the annotation of the bank that this check was returned. Capital One sent me a letter expressing that the recent check for $1229053758 was returned. I have no such check; the check was for $225.00 and was number 8094.
I contacted Capital One about this matter, but they refuse to submit a copy of the returned check to verify that this is the issue. They keep stating I have to write a letter, which I did on December 18, 2007. I have a copy of this letter. My banking institution ran a trace on my account of every transaction I have had with Capital One, as I always pay by check. There is no indication in their system that this check ever was submitted for payment. If Capital One is stating the truth about this check, I want a copy just to verify it as I believe they never processed the check and implied that it was returned for payment.

The law clearly states that when a creditor knows a client is represented by an attorney in connection with a debt, and I gave the name and number of the attorney in both my letters, the creditor is to contact the lawyer only, yet I am still being harassed by them. I made my payment in December but it arrived before their statement cut off date by one day and got posted to the November statement. This caused them to show I did not make a payment in December. Because of Christmas, I did not have extra money to make a double payment. I called them early in December and pointed out that I did make the payment and it arrived early and I could not make additional payments that month. I told them I did not want to show a late payment on my credit. They told me they could not do anything at the time and told me to call back in January and maybe they could make the adjustment then. I have followed back up with them. The result was I have been charged a $39 dollar late fee and they raised my interest rate from 4.9% to 28% and charged me $111 dollars in additional interest. All of this because the payment arrived early. Despite dozens of calls, this remains unresolved and I am at a loss as to what to do.

I called customer service to request a cancel on the card but stupidly let myself get talked into keeping it. Upon return from a holiday vacation I found a Capital One bill for the member fee of $39! Having been a loyal credit card customer of Capital One for several years, I received an offer to enjoy a low, FIXED 0% APR for 18 months! There was a 3% transaction fee. I borrowed $22,000 on Oct 30, 2007, to pay down a higher percent debt, meaning I assumed a new debt of $22,660 for 18 months. Beginning in Nov 2007 I've been paying $500 each month, well above their minimum requirement. In the meantime, my monthly charges on the credit card (averaging $1,581 per month over the last 11 months) are paid automatically by my bank, in full, and on time. It was agreed when I took out the loan that the two accounts would be treated seperately. Today's statement included a so-called finance charge of $38.46 which I protested (to no avail). I want this charge removed, now and forever, as long as monthly purchases are paid in full and on time. They are giving me some double-talk about charges being applied to average daily balance and this is not what was agreed or what can be deduced from the original agreement.
The Credit Card company is grossly misleading. They already make their money on the 3% upfront fee for the loan plus whatever percentage they take off the top when merchants accept the card. Bottom line: I'm losing money if/when I must end this nonsense and re-finance that $22,600.

Advertised as a No Hassle Rewards Card. It is nothing BUT a hassle! We pay 1 or 2x/month in large amounts to pay off the card in order to free available credit to charge again for our business. We try to use this card since it offers an annual 1/4% additional bonus reward based on your cummulative 1% rewards earned. Capital One continuously puts a hold on the acct payment, delaying freeing up available credit. For example, we paid $20k in one month's time, which is over the card's singular limit of $12,500, yet we paid what we had charged (i.e. states online it posted on 1/3/08, yet did not free available credit as of 1/7/08) because we used the card, paid the card, used the card & paid it again. We have a high credit score (in the 800's) and make payments in full religously. The individual we dealt with, Op ID EFP281 was additionally extremely rude to both my husband and myself.
In summary, if we use the card's available credit in excess of the card's singular limit of $12,500 in a 30 day period, even though we paid it off online each time in full, our subsequent payments within that 30 day period are automatically put on HOLD status requiring us to call in to get a manual release & CAP1 has to call the bank. We cannot freely use the card for business charges as our business requires, if we have to first get ahold of the Fraud Dept. and wait for them to call the bank EACH TIME we pay in order to get the payment truly credited and free up available credit. It punishes those customers who use the card and pay on time and in full more than once per month. It POSTS the payment online, but does not clear the payment. They do not tell you that you are discouraged from using the card's credit limit more than 1x/month, even if you pay it in full online each time you near the limit. This of course keeps a limitation on the rewards you can receive if you cannot freely use, pay and use the card repeatedly within a 30 day statement cycle. Obviously, they do not want you to use the card a lot and get that extra 1/4% annual bonus at the end of the year. This is their method of controlling the amount of rewards issued annually. We then have to use other credit cards that do not offer the extra 1/4% net annual bonus.

I don't recommend getting a Capital One credit card. Capital One Banks has structured their credit card business to extract excessive finance charges and late fees from their customers. This strategy should be exposed, to protect customers. Here is my experience: 1. Capital One restricted me to an unbelievably low credit limit of $2,000 even though my credit history has always been flawless. I realize that this is their prerogative, but no other credit company I have ever dealt with discounts prior credit history. This strategy makes it easy for customers to exceed the credit limit. 2. Capital Ones website does not accept early payments. At Capital One, early payments can only be made over the phone, for which a $10 fee is assessed. When I made an early payment over the phone to avoid exceeding my credit limit, their computer system flagged my early payment as suspicious activity? even though my payment was immediately and successfully drafted from my bank.
Even worse: my credit account was not credited with this payment until one week later after I called and complained to four people in Customer Service. Holding my money because I paid early is a strategy that should be against the law. 3. Capital Ones notified me that electronic funds transfer from my checking account would begin on December 4th . On my statement that was due on December 4th was printed the following information: Capital Ones automatic payment service is in effect for your account. As requested, the New Balance shown on this statement will be debited directly from your designated bank account on your Payment Due Date.
You do not need to send a separate payment.? My bank account was NOT automatically debited on December 4th, and finance charges of $11.88 as well as a late payment fee of $39 were imposed. I was $70 away from reaching my credit limit. I had to call a customer service representative to have the problem corrected. 4. After just the ONE late payment above (which was THEIR fault), Capital Ones website threatened me (in bold, red text) that the national credit bureaus would be notified of my delinquent activity if it continued.

In March I noticed a charge on my Capital One account that I didn't recognize and so began months long (and still ongoing) ride in a world that Capital One refers to as Customer Service. I had about a 4 year history with Cap1 of never being late with a payment and paying off my balance several time. I have (or had) excellent credit...the product of 20 years of hard work, sacrifice and conscientious decision making. I'm careful with by credit cards and always use cash when I can. Nonetheless, there are people who are bound and determined to obtain your information and it happened to me. I immediately called Cap1 and was tossed back and forth between Fraud and Disputes for 4 months. Cap1 closed the compromised account and re-opened a new account (I did not want to do this but I understood that the disputed charge has to go somewhere while the investigation was going on).
After dutifully completing and faxing every form they sent to me (each time Fraud told me I then needed to talk to Disputes and Disputes told me I then needed to talk with Fraud), I discovered, after getting a call from collections, that they had doubled the disputed charge on the new card. I called again. Now mind you, the customer service number does not give an option to speak with a live person. But after 4 months, and completely by accident, I figured out how many cycles of the recorded message you have to listen to before pressing zero gets you to a live person. You're still at least two tranfers away from anyone who has any capability to help. I called again and was told by no fewer that 3 people that they could see exactly what happened but they'd have to transfer me to someone else to help me. I finally got a contact to the main compliance office in Virginia and the person I spoke to there had the charges removed in a few days, this was August 8, 2007.
I requested the new account be closed and was told the account had to be at a zero balance for 2 cycles before the account could be closed. Fine, what's two more months. On November 8, 2007 I received a notice that Cap1 had received a debit)(s) and/or Credit(s) to my closed account. So the *closed* account was re-opened to post a $0.98 credit. I repeat...98 cents...as in not quite a dollar. Again I call to be told that Cap1 has to issue me a check for this not quite a dollar credit and then the account has to remain closed (whatever that means) again for 2 cycles. I was told that no one could tell me when the cycle ends (this, I believed as no one seems to know anything) and it would be sometime in January. I did ask her to clarify that it would be January of 2008.

I called to complain and was told that I agreed to balance transfer fees.
I pleaded with them to listen to the recording of my call with the rep, but was told that the recording could not be retrieved. I was totally at their mercy. It took me about 5 phone calls and several hours on hold, and I was finally assured that the fees would be waived. But just beware when you do phone transactions with these people. It appears that they can promise you anything over the phone, but those promises are meaningless. I will never enter into another transaction with them without getting my own recording device.

I have absolutely no affiliation with Capital One in any way, shape or form. I keep receiving phone calls from a number that when you call back brings you to their telebank system. If you mess up inputting your account number enough times you get customer support. Well I spoke to them and notified them that we have no account with Capital One and that we are on the do not call list. They still call, and it's been over a week. I've talked to just about every supervisor probably twice at this point, and have been on their cease and desist list for about a week now (since day one). I've been getting about 2-3 calls a day that range from 9 in the morning to 10:30 at night.
Well in short, They are breaking the law that the do not call registry upholds--and continue to do so. They've called me on Christmas morning for Christ's sake. If I had an account with them, I would cancel it... but I can only tell others to never deal with them. If they hassle potential customers in this way I wonder how they treat their current customers?
So far it's just been a big hassle, waiting on the line for hours to try and solve something nicely when I don't even have an affiliation with the company. I have filed the complaints with the registry website and am wasting more and more time trying to just work it out.

I canceled my card over 3 months ago. I received another bank statement showing that Capital One withdrew more monies from my account. I contacted them again, hours lost on the phone, and again they apologized and said they would credit the monies. That card was canceled.
I subsequently heard from others whose bank accounts were debited by Capital One, when they never used the card.

I opened my Capitol One account in early 2006 and was served very well. I noticed, however, that the service they provided me was slowly eroding. In Nov. 2007 I received my statement and immediately paid the entire amount, which has been my practice since I opened the account. I noticed that I had not yet received my Nov. 07 statement, but allowing for the holidays just thought that it was delayed in the mail. On 12-25-07 I called Cap One to find out its status and found that my account was being charged a late fee because I missed a payment. In speaking with the most rude people that I have ever dealt with, they told me that it is not Cap One's responsibility if the statement got lost in the mail--rather it was mine. I tried to reason with them to drop the late fee, but they didn't even want to discuss the problem. They told me that I should have called them sooner and that I should keep better records as to what I charged and sent in a check for the amount charged in Nov without a statement.
This entire transaction lasted about 15 minutes, and Cap One refused further discussion regarding the matter. Basically, they told me it is not their fault or responsibility. I hope by posting this on line other people will be aware of what they are getting themselves into with Cap One. I am in the process of transferring my account away from Cap One and suggest that all of the Cap One account holders do the same. I opened an account on 12/14/2007 at Capital One. When the account was opened, there was no red flag of any sort informing the bank nor me that there were monies owed from a previous account. The bank representative and I went through all the steps to assure everything was correct before signing and submitting the final paperwork to close the deal. I deposited a check for $316.70 and $200.00 in cash to my checking account and $50.00 to my savings. When I left I had no reason to be suspicious about my actions. Well, on 12/17/07, I went into the bank center to withdraw $50.00, and I was told it was not available due to recovery deducting $200.00 from my checking and $32.00 from my savings due to an account I had with Hibernia, which was bought by Capital One.
I was not notified by neither one of the institutions about a balance being owed. I was livid because I had no clue that this could happen. I spoke with the branch manager, and he said I do not have to be notified. If it is owed, I have no choice but to pay it. I agree, yet, I should have been notified either by mail or by the branch that this was going to happen. We could have came up with some type of arrangement to settle the debt. The bank said the debt was from 2005. I received no type of notice about the debt. It is scary how much power corporate America is given. They spend some much time and money on marketing, then when they have you they get what is owed.
They took funds away from me without notifying me. My checks may bounce, and I was told I will still be held responsible for the charges that occur. I am willing to work something out.

The transaction fee is 2% which came out to $99.44. I talked to a Rep named Earle. She explained to me that if I paid off my entire credit card purchases every month there would be no interest charge. The payment would pay off the purchases with the interest first, and the remaining balance of the payment would go to the 0% balance. I made a payment of $5000.00 so I could pay off the credit card purchases I made in October. From what I see from my statement, I had $4222.01 in credit card purchases. I thought that $4222.01 of the $5000.00 would pay off the credit card purchases and the remaining would go to the 0% loan.
Instead of $777.99 going into the 0% loan, Capital One put in $1067.23 into the 0% loan--leaving an outstanding balance on the credit card purchases of October which they can charge me interest. I talked to a Rep named Joan today and demanded that they remove the finance charge from my account and that it was credit card fraud. She refused to remove the charges, so I told her I am going to file a complaint to a class action Attorney and to the FTC.
I was quite upset. All these years I made my payments on time and paid the entire balance. They ripped me off $173.33 so far. Now I wondered how many other people they ripped off?

So I called Western Union and asked them how long would it take for me to get my money credited back to my account. They said 3 to 5 business days. I waited patiently. On Nov. 26, I realized my money was not credited. I called Capital One and they said that Western Union had to send a fax saying that it was declined. I called W U and they said they would send it. I called Capital One everyday and they said they never received a fax. To this day they claim they have not received it.
I did a 3-way conference with WU and CO and the W U rep. was trying to give them the information, and the CO rep said it had to be faxed. The WU lady said she would fax it. I called CO a day later, and they asked me what time was it faxed and from what area code. The fax had all of my info on it: my name, card number, authorization code, control numbers. They are still saying they never received it. I talked to 5 or 6 different reps per day from Capital One, and nobody had any clue what was going on the majority of the time.

The same week, I receive a statement from Capital One stating that I missed a payment and a statement that my interest rate will go up with future past due payments. Additionally, I received a late payment fee. I called Capital One since I've never missed a payment and have never been late. I was told the billing cycle for December did not start until November 6, and since I paid on the 1st (5 days too soon), it does not count as my December payment. I explained my intentions of paying my December payment early so as to allow for Christmas expenses. I argued that I'm obviously not aware of their billing cycle and requested they count my payment for the December 1st payment. I spoke to the rep, the rep's supervisor, and then her supervisor. I only received sorry, can't, won't, and unfortunately.
Even though I already paid the January payment, it counted as a December payment, and I'll have to come up with another $500 due December 31st. In the end, the supervisor (Ann, #PMG662) refused to let me speak to anyone else and advised me she was going to disconnect the call. MERRY CHRISTMAS to me and my family!
Bottom line, I can't pay it. I budget carefully for my family. The consequence of my paying early will result in a bad mark on my credit, late fees, penalties, and probably an interest rate increase.

I asked several times to verify that I would be getting the 9.9% interest. In November they charged me interest for the first time, at a rate of 18.4%! The high interest amount put me over the limit by about $3, so they also charged me $29 for being overline. I called and got the $29 credited and was told to call back the next day to speak to a supervisor who would fix the interest rate problem. I did that today and the best I could get them to do was reduce it to 14.9%, beginning in the next day or two and not retroactive. I was given a Capital One representative with an extremely difficult accent. I explained that I had paid my bill by internet on Nov. 8, 2007 but got an e-mail message that it was past due. I called customer service and told them I had paid my bill by internet on Nov.8, and could not access my acct., and wanted to get things straightened out. While she was holding the line for me I typed in once again and tried to access my online account, and once again was stopped by the message cookies were disabled--but I had already enabled them. For two more days I tried to get on the internet and always was stopped by the same message. I finally called in a repeat payment. I got my bill and was charged for a late payment.
I feel this was entirely unfair since I had paid my bill in early Nov. and had been forced to repay it by phone for another charge. I still cannot access my acct. The total of these charges is $39. I would still like to know how to access my account on-line, but receive no help.

After spending countless hours on the phone for over a week and speaking with five managers who were all useless, they told me there was a change in terms for their customers and that if I wanted to wait at least 6 months, that I could call back to discuss a rate change. They said this is what their competitors are charging and they needed to adjust. I was given the same scripted speech from every person I spoke with.
Needless to say the card was paid in full and I even sent them some extra for misc stuff they will dream up to charge me for and I closed the account.

I paid off all my credit cards on Nov. 1, 2007. I received bills from Capital One charging me interest on the money I paid off. This is the same card that I requested the account to be closed. On the bill it states that the account has to be zero balance for two months in order to close it. How am I supposed to have a zero balance when they charge for a finance fee on a balance that was paid? As a result I paid the fee again (44.00). I also wrote on the bill to close the account again. I have also written this on all of the other Capital One accounts I have. I am tired of paying 5 or 6 dollars a month for cards I don't use. I am also tired of them moving the pay by date. One card I recieved a late fee because they changed to date. I usually pay my bill on-line and have paid it this way for 6 years. So, I was upset when they changed the date. Then they reported it to the credit bureau that I was 30-60 days late, but actually it was only 5-10 days late because they changed the due date. I am writing a letter requesting that all 4 of my cards be closed. Is there anything else I can do?

I have tried to close my account with Capital One several times. The company still sends me statements with available credit, meaning my account is still open. I know they are aware of the letter I have sent them to close the account. But it seems they don't care. There has to be a way a company like this can get reported and make changes for its customers. I have tried with phone calls and it takes on average 20 to 30 minutes to get through with them, and when you get to talk to them sometimes the phone call cuts off. I went from paying 7.9% interest to 18.40% all because I paid one day late. I was able to prove that the payment was sent post marked 4 days before due date, but that did not matter to them so they raised the rate.
I have asked the company to lower the available credit from $5000.00 to $2500.00 twice, and they did, but raised it up again twice to $4000.00 available credit without my permission. When I asked to close my account it was long before the dues payment for annual fees was up, however they were very slick and ignored my request so they can tack on another $59.00 fee. Capital One has fees for everything: need customer service-- pay a fee, one day late--pay a fee, want to close your account--first pay a fee, then another, and another because they don't want to close your account. I'm sick and tired of this abuse; all I want is out of this Capital One nightmare.

We pay off our credit card balance every month. We received a special offer with Access Checks to borrow money interest free for 18 months. We paid off a car loan and took on the balance on our Capital One account at a one-time 2% finance charge to the balance. Now we learned that we are incurring interest on our monthly purchases, even though we pay off the balance, because they are applying our payments *first* to the interest free balance, and in the meantime we get hit with a finance charge on the rest. So, to stop getting hit with monthly interest charge on our regular balances, we have to immediately pay off the interest free part, even though they already charged us 2% of that balance up front! It is an absolutely diabolical scheme.
I spent an hour and a half on Capital One's customer service line, mostly on hold, then spoke with Tina and then a woman named Corey. They were no help, and Corey was actually belligerent to me. I cannot believe that companies can get away with stuff like this, and I don't think they care at all that they just lost a long term customer.
I paid over $120 so far in charges I would never have incurred if I did not accept their special offer. Now I have to scramble to get the money to pay off the whole balance to avoid more charges--as well as to zero out the account so I can be done with this outrageous company.

On the 5th of November, my wife signed on line to pay the balance of her credit card with Capitol One. She set up a withdrawal from our account with WAMU to pay this account. A confirmation was received that Capitol One received the needed information to make the withdrawal. We waited for the monies to be taken out of WAMU and it never showed up on the account. When she contacted Capitol One, she was told that the took it out of her seldom used account with Wells Fargo. The removal of these funds from her Wells Fargo account caused the account to go into overdraft: a $10.00 charge. When she called Capitol One, (even though they confirmed the account set up to take the money from the WAMU account), she talked to 4 different people who disclaimed that this set-up with WAMU ever took place. We received a confirmation that they were going to take the money from the WAMU account, even using the new password, which was in the confirmation email.
This is not a large sum of money, but being steam-rolled by a company of this size and structure is disconcerting. Their refusal to handle this problem is extremely aggravating.

I have been trying for 4 months to close my accounts without success. This needs to stop and is completely fraudulent, especially if you are trying to become credit responsible and get out of debt.
