In early May or late April I discovered that my credit card was being used fraudulently by my brother’s girlfriend to accept jail house calls from my brothers on my mother’s phone line. I called Global Tel Link and was advised that the total amount stolen was $175.00. I was advised $50 had not been used. I later was advised because it's friendly fraud I'm not getting my $ back and they are not going to refund the $50 not used and not going to remove the block. Every rep I spoken with has given me a different lie/story and refuses to esc to their corporate office. One min I am told that I need to get the acct holder on the phone for help. Then when she is on the phone I am still refused help. The next min I am told that a req to refund my $ was entered. Then the next I am told it’s not.

At this point all I am asking is either the block be removed & any unused money refunded. I've already made a complaint with the BBB & now I am about to make a complaint with CFPB, AG office and whoever else will hear me. Because this is absolutely a criminal act at this point. A Criminal act on both the person who committed the fraud and Global Tel Link. I feel like Global Tel should be shut down and fined by the government for their business practices and not allowed to do business in the USA. I've never dealt with a company more unprofessional than Global Tel. What Global Tel don’t know is all of the phone calls have been recorded and I will be going to the news and other media outlets. Maybe if the people that employ them knew that they are also criminals they'd find another company to deal with also.

All over the net GTL advertises unlimited calls for 7.95 a month but when contacted will not honor it. I complained to them without success. I filed a complaint with the BBB. They wrote GTL and gave them a month to respond and they never did. GTL has a monopoly on inmate telephone service so we are at their mercy and just have to bend over and take it!

Global Tel Link is clearly a scam by uneducated and thirsty individuals who take one's devastating circumstances to make millions. The customer service department is run by individuals who clearly have no training in working with the public. Not only do they deduct a service fee when you add money to your account, they deduct unused minutes to their advantage. The last two times I made a deposit, I was only able to speak to the inmate a total of two times. When I contacted customer service, the agent was extremely rude and offered no solutions to my situation. The supervisor that followed spoke such broken English, I could barely understand her and I ended up disconnecting the call.

I have been using Global Tel Link which is now Connect Network for 3 years. I have noticed that when a call has been made it charges $1.44 and $0.05 for tax per call. Well, I have been noticing for months that the amount I have in the balance column after each call and tax is wrong. They always have a negative in the balance column but a positive amount on top where it says Amount Available for Calls. So, yesterday I put $20.00 and my inmate tried to call and it said no money on account. I checked and they took over $25.00 with no explanation. I have printed my statement and they obviously cannot do any math - the whole list is wrong. The amount they charge is one thing but to continuously rip me off a few cents every phone call for 3 years is absurd. I am pissed, but because they have a monopoly there is nothing I can do. I just checked and they replaced the $25.00, but I am not even sure if the amount is correct because they put money on and take it off at their every whim.

Also, I have 3 numbers that my inmate can call and one number for my dad he hardly ever calls. One day I get a letter stating that the money on this number will be removed and kept by GTL for inactivity if I do not call. So, I call and they tell me that the money is already gone. I tell the lady that the letter states, I need to call within 180 days of the date on the letter. She tells me the letter is wrong and it is 180 days from the last call made to that phone. REALLY SHADY BUSINESS!!! Again, what can we do - they have a monopoly on the industry. WHEN IS SOMEONE GOING TO CALL THEM ON THEIR SHADY, RIPOFF, BUSINESS PRACTICES????

Today, June 6, I called to find out the status of my refund and was told it had not been processed. I was told to submit my request in writing and that it would take an additional 30 BUSINESS days. We'll have to wait and see if that happens. Their website states refunds will be processed within 30 days of the date of the last charge to the credit card. After spending an hour on their website trying to figure out the different nonsensical terms and links that send you nowhere, I thought I was done. I then receive a call from my incarcerated friend, who had a type of calling card account he had money on. So then the system tells me before we could talk, I NEEDED TO ADD MONEY! I thought the whole reason he had to have money on his account so he could call me, and they was me to pay to receive the calls as well? So after being prompted to quickly add money by pressing 5, it then hangs up on my friend! I tried multiple ways to speak with some representative and was asked "for English, press 1" and as soon as I pressed one, it says "goodbye". What happened to the good old days before idiotic automated computer-prompted machines controlled your phone calls in a slow-paced, high-pitched, overly happy cyborg voice. Not to mention, everything on the website wasn't truly compatible with my mobile phone. I couldn't even look up the facility or state! Shame on you and your greedy correctional system, America!

I realize now that the last time I did this (having inmate calling from jail and while on the phone trying to talk to them and giving my MasterCard info only to get cut off the call once it was completed and after 11 times of trying this going online to set up account and later an email comes and I call the number like it tells me to in order to finish the registration) only to find out that they have taken my money and provide me no service and no customer service BUT THAT'S WHEN ALL THE FRAUD STARTED. THEY MUST HAVE SOLD MY INFORMATION TO CRIMINALS (THEY ARE CRIMINALS THEMSELVES - I can't believe they get away with this???) Why? Because it's family of criminals in jail? No big deal, right? Wrong!!!

First off, I pay a lot of taxes and work hard the last 43 of my working life. I've never scammed the government or my homeowner insurance or anyone for that matter. I work when sick and don't protest too much when the IRS takes more tax money from me out of the blue every other year last 24 years. Do you know what I have had to go through with ID fraud because of this scam company? I can prove it now too. It makes total sense and I have a credit alert and freeze with the three credit bureaus and what a nightmare trying to buy a home now.

I am thankful I have all documentation to show when it all started. And I'm just waiting now to see it happen again but this time I have alerted and stopped any new credit without the business having to call me and letting me know who is trying to be me and obtaining goods or services posing as me and using my hard-earned money.

The government should be fired for allowing this to go on. It should be stopped immediately and a good company without any ties to GTL given the contract. I'd like to know why this can still be happening? Is the government the silent partners having stock in GTL who hides behind Offender connect? Something's fishy. We need to band together people and start a class action suit against these criminals. That's what needs to happen first since it's pretty obvious that writing this complaint isn't going to help change the problem and stop any chance we all are now victims of credit fraud. Because that's exactly what just happened to you by dealing with this rip off ID fraud center where we, like idiots, give them our consent to rip us off and have no one there to help us later.

I'm disgusted!!!! Completely made insane over this and to have limited recourse. Spread the word. DON'T EVER USE EITHER OF THESE COMPANIES to connect with your person in jail who just might be innocent. Nevertheless they are human beings and their friends and families suffer too when they're locked up. The whole world seems to be one giant scam, doesn't it?

And a couple of hundred dollars a month spent, so she can feel like she's connected in some way to her family?

THIS IS A SCAM pure and simple. Where is our justice? I pay my taxes, and work 5 days a week, & pay up every time the government holds its hand out... This is abuse of people and families already in a vulnerable state. What is being done about it? Where are our rights in this, as consumers, the 'service' is broken and they are still making money hand over fist, how does this happen? I want the corporations, and/or parties involved in this, held accountable, plain and simple.

After spending over a week emailing and calling them, I have gotten nowhere. After several emails they sent me new log-in information that did not work either on an Apple or Windows system. I sent them another email telling them this and have never received a response. In my numerous attempts to call them, every number gives me another number to call. I can't pay over the phone because a site number, which is required or they hang up on you, is not available on their web page. I have dealt with thousands of internet site, several inmate phone services, and never experienced anything remotely similar to this. Companies usually want to take your money. How can GTL gain a contract with Lee County? IC Solutions, operating for Hamilton County, Florida charges reasonable rates. Why aren't we able to use the company we choose? Then it cost $5 for the call and keeps disconnecting in the middle of our call which in turn he has to call back. Now I ran into the problem where they put a hold on my card because I've used too many prepaid cards and their system will only allow you to use so many cards. So they have a hold on my card and will not put the funds on the phone so that my husband can call. They claim this can be up to 10 days...

I do not believe that this company cares and they know that they are the only company that these County Jails can use. I don't think they realize that the people that are in jail are our loved ones. They have no reason to do this. They don't know why they are there. They don't know the situation. They don't know the story and they're making a lot of money off of us. And in the end they keep disconnecting calls so they make more money. Yes the fees were astronomical, and there was little left after they were taken out. What really has angered me to no end is the fact I requested a refund, and it clearly states a refund by check will be mailed. 1- 1/2 years later I still continue to request my money. I have gotten so many different stories from so many people there, its hard to remember them all, the check is in the mail was the most common one. Now they have me going back and forth with Western Union claiming they sent the money to me through Western Union. Of course Western Union has no records of the transfer being made so, now I'm out of the balance that was left when I requested a refund. They have us where they want us with this business. Pay the fees, get bad connections, disconnected, and never get your money back if you request the balance sent back to you. I would say write letters and be written back but they control the system of money to buy the paper, pencil and stamps too.

MONEY taken while waiting for transfer to another facility. I too had Global Tel Link take the money that was left in my account. It takes 2-3 MONTHS for inmates entering the State Prison System, and GTL TAKES the money left in the account after 30 days!!! STEALING money from those already struggling just to stay in contact with loved ones is a CRIME and should be punishable by law! I can't believe that the State of California allows this to continue!! It is bad enough that there is now a monopoly of the CDCR facilities, yet to have the money stolen straight up as our hands are tied if we want to keep in touch with our loved ones? The fees they charge are 18%!!!! That is just the fee you pay when you add funds to the account! To top it off, they are now routing the calls through a Texas number, so no matter if you live local or not, you either have to pay to find a local number, or get charged up the ** for long distant fees, ALONG with the fees for EACH call!!! WRONG! This should not be acceptable by the State Of California, or any other State that is employing the services of GTL!!!

Minimum Standards for Local Detention Facilities
    Title 15-Crime Prevention and Corrections
    Division 1, Chapter 1, Subchapter 4:

I am in Baltimore, Maryland. Our Department of Corrections changed our Inmate phone service from T-Netix to Securus then in June 2013 to This Global Tel-link.

Global Tel-link is totally ridiculous. Global Tel-link requires you to set up an account with them before you even find out what the rate of the call is. Wherefore Securus had a website page where a potential customer could go to and put in their phone number and what facility the call was coming from and they gave you a call rate for that call. So with Global, I have set up an account, wait for the inmate (my son) to call me before I know how much it will cost me.

I am charged an account setup fee of $5.00 and if it's a cell phone another additional $5.00 charge. Also like another $2.00 for using a credit card. This is $12.00 just to get a call from my son from prison and haven't even gotten a call yet. With Global Tel-link if you wish to add another phone to your account, you need to set up another account and be charged for another setup fee of $5.00 and if a cell phone an additional $5.00 charge. With Securus they would allow the account holder to add like 3 additional phone numbers to their account for no additional charges.

Global Tel-link added this feature to their service, it's called Excessive calling. Explanation of what Excessive Calling is. If the inmate doesn't get through on his first try of whom he/she is calling they need to wait a few minutes to try again. If they don't wait a few minutes and they Try again, they are blocked for 24 hours from making calls. I am not sure but I think they may be blocked for 24 hours of making calls to anyone.

Doesn't Maryland have a monopoly law and with Global being the only Service that Maryland Department of Corrections allows inmates to use. Isn't Maryland Department of Corrections breaking the law by monopolizing the inmates' phone services and the Citizens of Maryland and/or citizens who have people incarcerated in Maryland rights by Monopolizing Prison Phone System? Thank You.

My husband is in a CEC Center in Philadelphia, PA where he calls me from on a daily basis. So I set up an account with Global Tel*Link, they never made me aware that I could only use 2 credit cards per account, as I was buying prepaid MasterCards due to I don't have a bank account nor do I have any credit cards. So after using about 6-7 pre paid cards, I bought another card and called to add money to my account. The message said sorry, your card could not be approved at this time, please try again later, so I called my card to make sure that I registered it right.

At this time it made me aware that Global Tel*Link had taken my money off of my card. So I called Global Tel*Link to ask them why the money was taken off of my card and not put on to my account. At that time they told me that I had used too many cards and I had to send them a copy of my cell phone bill and send them a utility bill in my name and also give them my pin # to my account then the money would go on to my account. So the money was placed on hold until I gave them all documents that they are asking for and it would also take up to about 7-10 days to be credited to my account after they received all my info.

This not only happened to me once but it happened to me twice so at this time they have pretty much robbed me for $50 due to my cell phone is not in my name and I don't have any utility bills in my name due to me living with my mother-in-law at this time due to my financial situation. So I tried to explain all of this to them and they said that they needed to see the cell phone in my name and I must provide them with a utility bill in my name, so I don't know what I am supposed to do. I haven't talked to my husband now in about a week due to that was all of the money, that I had to put on the phone at the time and I have nothing in my name and I still haven't received my prepaid card with my name on it so I can use that 1 card all the time. What can I do about this problem? Can anyone help me please? Sincerely, A Desperate Wife Looking For Some Type of Answers.

I was reimbursed for my prepaid phone account after filing this complaint.

    Original Review: Dec. 14, 2013

I placed a $50.00 payment on 11/10/13, so my daughter could call me from San Luis Obispo County Jail. She was released from this facility shortly after that, so the money is still sitting unused in an account that is no longer usable. I have contacted this company several times attempting to get my money back and have repeatedly been told, "It takes 30 to 60 business days to process your refund." As they are able to immediately deduct the money from my credit card account, I see no valid reason why they choose to stall submitting a refund to the same credit card account. I have never dealt with a company that sits on my money for any length of time. I don't know how they can legally get away with this. I simply want my money refunded. It has already been a month and 3 days since I first requested a refund for an unusable service!

I paid 25.00 each for 2 phones. I received 1 call on 1 of my phones. I checked balance and I only had a few cents left. They stated that the call was 16.46 because it's made to a cell phone. So this leaves me with my other phone with 1 call left. I check the balance for my other phone and it shows 1.66 left and when I called about this money on account, they say I received a call and spoke for 30 min. This makes no sense since my other phone only left me with only 46 cents for 30 minutes. I NEVER RECEIVED 1 CALL ON MY SECOND PHONE, YET I AM BEING CHARGED. I paid 50.00 and only received 1 call. THIS COMPANY IS RIPPING PEOPLE and THERE IS NOTHING WE CAN DO. Don't use Global Link. Write a letter. THIS COMPANY IS A THIEF. They think because it's inmate calls, it's ok to steal our money.

I placed $25 on an account I set up to communicate with my boyfriend and when he called ONE time, I was told I have a balance of $20 and some change. I assumed that the call was averaging about $4 and some cents for each call. They said the call was 15 minutes and it seemed only about 10 minutes. When he tried to call back, I couldn't accept the call because now I had NO MONEY on my account. If I am told that I have a BALANCE... then I expect to have that money available the next time. Misleading and the website does NOT specify you will be charged according to distance nor how much it will be per minute.

When I called to speak to someone, a foreigner tried to explain that for MY phone and the distance, I was charged $4.98 for the first minute and $0.89 per minute after that, which I told him that still did not add up. If my call was 15 minutes and I am charged $4.98 first minute, that leaves 14 minutes of billing and that (14 x .89 = $12.46). I still should have had $7.56 on my account. He told me it came to $15.98. Clearly, he could not multiply nor add or subtract. This is a rip OFF... $25 for a 15-minute call and my distance is only under 4 hours away from my boyfriend.

Global Tel*Link is a major ripoff. First it takes money out of your account, charge you for calls that didn't go through & charge for drop calls. I just deposited 50 bucks on my account but Global Tel*Link claims I owe on a prepaid account. How is that possible? It's prepaid, you deposit money before you're able to receive calls & if there's no money, there are no calls.

OMG, they got you by the balls. It's the only way inmates can make calls so why not take advantage of people that are obviously already in a bad situation. Why hasn't a class action lawsuit been filed to stop this scam? When I received a computer call saying "this is a one time courtesy call," yaddy yaddy ya, "press #5 to add money to account," "recipient has selected to fund account," "please try your call back shortly"! Well, like everybody else, that was a week ago. After numerous phone calls and emails I've yet to receive a call from my account.

Oh yes, the website shows the credit for $93.75 after a $100 charge on my credit card. When the inmate calls, he gets their message that no funds are available? These people are such great liars. They even told me inmate is using the wrong phone. Seriously???? So, I've found that the commissary account was more reliable, at least so far. Call your facility for information on any other option than paying Global Tel *Link, CTI, VAC, PCS, DSI-ITI or any other affiliate of "Offender Connect". My next option is to call my credit card and try to refuse payment. We all know who the real "offender" is now, don't we!!! Come on people, let's get this in a COURT ROOM and make them pay, Please.

However, after setting up an account and selecting the facility listed on their website, and charging my credit card, no money was applied to the account! If they had bothered to call me via phone, because they certainly have my number considering that has to be in the system to accept calls from the correction facilities, I would have been more than happy to update their records. The moment that I called them to transfer money from one building to the next building, they told me they could not do this. The place is the same so why would a company deny a customer their own monies to be transferred to the other building, not another location, but the same place. Instead they want to hold your money for thirty days so they may earn interest off of it while you have no goods or services that you have paid for. It takes them a second to take your money from your Bank Account and they expect you to wait thirty days or more.

Even I've had my music playing and it hung up. When I first started to use this service, I couldn't get the calls to go through. I called and they didn't explain to me that right after the recording says to push zero, you have to push zero. I've called back to try to get a credit and they said I couldn't. I cannot accept collect calls from my brother in the local county jail without providing my credit card to GTL to set up a prepaid account. GTL has informed me that I surpassed an "unpublished $50/90 day rule". I have requested documentation about this rule and have not received anything from GTL. This is not a payment issue as my bill is automatically paid every month without fail. The calls that I managed to receive before being blocked were billed thru 3rd party on my standard AT&T bill, but GTL says this is no longer an option due to the "unpublished rules" that I violated.

I have filed a complaint with the PUC (Public Utility Commission) a couple of days ago and the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) tonight. GTL called me about the PUC filing within (2) business days (I must have brought some attention to their scam). We got nowhere over the phone and I requested a copy of the "unpublished rules". The agent ignored my repeated request for this document, so I finally ended the call as I had customers waiting for me.

I suggest that everyone start filing your complaints immediately with both the PUC and the FCC to see if we can get momentum rolling against GTL to stop their scams immediately. I will continue filing complaints as long as my phone numbers are permanently blocked. My mother went to the trouble to obtain a land line to receive my brother's calls and the new number was already blocked by the previous phone number account holder. She changed phone numbers and can now receive calls until she reaches that unknown point of no return to PREPAID status. This is ridiculous.

I realized it after I did it and I ask one of the guards how do I go about getting the money back. He tells me it's not worth the trouble and to go ahead and add more money to the food account. Well, now I find out GTL put a block on my phone because I set up a prepaid account and it cannot be changed. Ever! Stupid! I was on the phone with a man today for over an hour and nothing got resolved. I couldn't understand him and I ask to speak to a supervisor and she keep telling me I could not change it back so that my brother could call collect again. She did tell me I could ask for a refund which I did, so who knows what’s going to happen now. I hate GTL and I think they should not be allowed to treat us this way. We are giving them tons of money only to be treated like dirt. I really don't know what I'm going to do now. Him calling collect was the only way that I could talk with him. I was told it's an old website under an old system and they are trying to make it all prepaid. Problem I have is call will be way more than $5 and once you go over they automatically put your account on prepaid! Also prepaid service takes $8.75 out of what ever you pay them just for their pocket then charge u to connect calls per use. Thank God I set up a Google voice number near the facility so calls will only cost me $2-$3 a call.

I suggest for any one to do the same. Find a number with same area code of facility then call [do not go to website they will ask for phone bill], give them Google number and all your info. Don't worry they don't check your address against phone number. They just want your money. If I hadn't did it this way calls would be $17 a call! Also don't go through prison calls or other places that rip you off. All they are doing is setting up Google voice number and selling it to you. Good luck! From the start I have had calls come in from my husband and I try to accept the call and then call gets dropped. My husband calls and I accept the call and he can hear me but I can't hear anything on the call, so for a call that lasts 25 seconds or so I get charged over 2 bucks for (every time it happens). And then I got told how much the charges were to accept the call and how much it is for each minute after that and well fine so I try to limit our calls according to those charges that I was told, but it turns out I've been getting charged more than that. So I call Global Tel to find out what's going on and to double check on the charges and of course the fees are higher than what I was told from the beginning. Plus the container service rep was rude to me! I am very unhappy with this whole situation. I'm pregnant and already going through a difficult pregnancy and am not supposed to be stressed out but thanks to Global Tel's rip off fees, my stress level just went up again. So I hope someone can do something about this bull, because I'm about to find another phone service to set up to talk to my husband through.

Hopefully every loved ones of NY state inmates and county jail inmates will again drive them out of NY. They are greedy thieves making extreme amounts of monies off the mistakes of our friends and families and taking money and energy out of honest hardworking taxpayers.

Remember we, the taxpayers, pay for these calls and they or no one has the right to take advantage of us because our loved ones are incarcerated. Family contact is so vital for the inmates and loved ones. This has NOTHING to do with making inmates have good behavior so they can talk to their GOD-given families. Some inmates have very bad mental health issues to which DOCs in every state in this country do not handle correctly and end up making them worse. The fact Global Tel*Link makes it so much harder to communicate is all about greed and money.

We are pretty much being blackmailed again, pay our prices, deal with our abuses or have no contact. Fill out our stupid hard-to-work internet set-up accounts with NO customer service number for people to help you (who would be rude and degrading anyway; know this from past experience). If you forget your info on your account you are out of luck and WE, THE PEOPLE, should not have to tolerate this. NY state has over 70 state prisons and many, many county jails. Every person incarcerated has family and friends who are registered voters. It is time to vote out politicians that know this company operates in such a hinkey way. If we all stand together in NY and all over the country where Global Tel*Link has the monopoly, we can expose them and get them out of the business of bleeding inmates and tax payers dry moneywise and emotionally.

Global Tel*Link provides telephone services to inmates in local, county, and state correctional facilities. In some states (Oklahoma to name one), they "block" telephone numbers that inmates call collect after the first call and then call the number and demand that a prepaid account be set up. They do not publicize their rates, terms, or conditions. If you refuse to deposit funds into a prepaid account, they refuse to release the block.

There are literally hundreds of complaints against Global Tel*Link, including blocking phone numbers from receiving collect calls from inmates unless a prepaid account is set up: overcharging, cutting calls short, not providing refunds, no visible means of addressing complaints, requiring recipients to set up prepaid accounts even though their landline service allows collect calls. All information provided herein is public information available on the internet.

Global Tel*Link is located in Mobile, AL and is registered as a foreign corporation in the state of PA. Global Tel*Link is owned and operated by DSI-ITI, LLC located in Altoona, PA and is registered as a foreign company in PA as well. The last registered officers of Global Tel Link include: President: Brian D. Oliver; Vice President: Harold L. Howard; Secretary: Teresa L. Ridgeway; Treasurer: Charles S. Yow

The purpose of allowing inmates telephone privileges is to promote good behavior. The actions of Global Tel*Link discourages inmates from following the rules of the institution they are confined in and increases their level of frustration, leading to potentially dangerous situations, all so that Global Tel*Link and their associates can make a profit, and further their business by ensuring that the institution (or their governing body) can make a profit as well, ensuring the continued use of Global Tel*Link. Complaints against Global Tel*Link and DSI-ITI were filed today with the Attorney Generals of Oklahoma, Alabama, and Pennsylvania, as well as with the FTC and FCC.

The only way to get at these folks is to attack their pocket book. A search of public records showed that they have financing arrangements with two well thought of financial institutions. Pressure can be exerted (nicely) against these financial institutions, requesting that they re-evaluate their moral and ethical standards of their clients (this is done all of the time by consumer groups at annual meetings, shareholder meetings, etc.). The two main financial institutions are Credit Suisse AG, Cayman Island Branch, New York, New York; and US Bancorp, Marshall, MN. Good luck and keep me informed.

The second time, one phone call. Of course, it happens after the customer service is closed (if you can get a live person). This is a ripoff and people who want to visit or talk to their loved ones in jail have no other choice.

I was receiving collect phone calls from a relative in the local jail and had no problem. They would call collect, even though it was only about 8 miles away. I would press 0 or say yes and the call would be put through. All of a sudden, with no warning or explanation to either myself or my relative, I would pick up the phone and receive a recording asking if I wished to accept a call from the local correctional facility. I would say yes or press zero, but the call would be denied. It took me 2 days to find out that a new corporation had taken over the phone service. I then called them and asked why the calls were not being put through and was told that I had probably gone over my limit. I told them that was impossible as I was not aware of any limits in my phone service; and even if there was a limit, I had only accepted 2 phone calls at that point. I did not see how that would be over my limit.

I was then told there must be a problem with my phone line, and they would investigate it and fix it; still, apparently, trying to make me believe I was talking to a representative of my real phone company, although I did notice that the person I was talking to definitely did not sound as if English was his first language. The next day, the phone rang, and again, they refused to put the call through before I called a certain 800 number. I called the number and was again connected to what sounded like the same guy, who was pretending to not understand what I was talking about. By this time, I had spent about 45 minutes on the phone trying to find out what was going on and was getting very frustrated, so I told him I wanted to speak to his manager. I had to make this request 3 or 4 times before he said OK and put me on hold for a few minutes. Finally, a woman with a southern accent came on the phone and I finally found out that I had to pre-pay this new company before they would put the calls through. They would only accept payment amounts in $25 or $50 amounts.

Since I am terminally ill, on a very fixed income (one of the reasons my relative was trying to call me), and only have a debit card that did not have the money on it. I used my son's fiancée's card to make the payment (another hour on the phone before it would take the payment). The next day, the phone rings and again, I am not allowed to accept the call. I called Global Tel and asked them what was going on. Again, I am greeted with stupidity about what I was talking about and told I would have to make a payment, after first being told, again, that there must be something wrong with my phone line. I told them I had made a payment. They responded by asking me the account number of the card, whose name it was under, and the security code number on the back of the card. I told them the name, the time the payment was made and that I did not have the card number or the security number because the card did not belong to me. I was then told I would have to fax this information to them before any calls would be let through. I tried arguing this point with them, saying to just look up their own records, but to no avail.

So later that night, the owner of the card gave me the information they were asking for, which I did not feel right having, and called them back to give them the information. At first, I was told that I could only fax the information, but finally, I got someone to take the information over the phone and was told that everything was OK now.

It had taken me almost 3 days to get to the point where I could finally accept the calls that were being made, so I decided to find out about this company. I found out that they apparently get these contracts by bidding on them and offering rebates (kickbacks?) to the jail/prison system. I have also found out that when they first get the contract, the prices are much lower, but they are quickly raised once the contract is in place, sometimes to ridiculous levels (see Georgia prices). Where I live, they charge about $3 a call (for 5 miles away), but if you do not have that amount on your balance ahead of time, they will not put the call through. I have also heard from people that any balance you might have when you no longer have to use this service is very hard, if not impossible, to get returned to you. I have also read that there are states that have passed amendments to their constitution against these sorts of companies and their services (?). I am currently in the process of working with my legislator to put a stop to this in our state.

When my young daughter was first incarcerated, I put prepaid money on my cell phone and had nonstop problems! Dropped call (from the jail, not my cellphone), horrible quality calls, and the list goes on. I was always charged for dropped call. GTL's policy is they don't refund anyone using a cell phone! Most folks don't even have a land line anymore. Well I do, so I added funds to my land line. I added $25 to my prepaid account and got a whopping 2 phone calls. GTL is offering me a $7.53 refund. What? They are just plain stupid and are robbing us blind. Someone needs to put them out of business.

And it's not just about the money. What about the grief that the inmate and families are going through? My daughter deserves to be in jail now, but she is not a hardened criminal. She is an addict that needs help. It's so important that she has the full support of her family and it's so important to us to give that support to her. It breaks my heart when she calls and I can't take the call because GTL screwed up AGAIN. I can't afford to add more money to my account. When GTL is confronted, they do not even consider compensation for pain and suffering. There is pain and suffering, and it's REAL.

A good company would not only refund you, but they would offer to give you some funds in addition for the inconvenience and grief. GTL needs to be shut down! They are PATHETIC!

This company has a monopoly on the system so they can charge whatever they want. The connections are horrible and sometimes I don't even get to speak with my son because he will try 3 or 4 times and the calls all drop, so he has used up his chances for the day.

My son was recently released and I called to ask for a refund. I was told there was a $5 charge for refunding money and it would take 30 days to show up on my card. Are they sending the money by pony express? If your inmate is in jail for any length of time, this runs into a lot of money and you have no choice except to use their service. And if you call to complain, if the call lasts more than 5 minutes, you may not call about being cut off. If and only if the call lasts less than 5 minutes can you call and they will have an investigation. If the investigation doesn't prove exactly what you say, they charge you $5! The customer service representatives are rude, nasty and seem to make an effort to keep you as uninformed as possible. Account information such as monthly monetary limits, changing service providers or making payments necessary to keep the account from being blocked is information that will only be given after an account is already blocked. Once an account is blocked, it can take weeks to get it unblocked. I have had nasty and rude representatives every time I have contacted Global Tel Link and in an already tough situation, they are only making things worse with their negativity and harsh demeanor.

I was wondering if you could investigate the company by the name Global Tel*Link. They are the phone company that we have to use if our loved ones are incarcerated. I believe they are ripping us customers off. First, your account has to be prepaid. The fees to put money on your account is as follows: if you do it by the automated system, you can only put $25 or $50 and they take a processing fee out for that, which is about the cost of one full phone call. If you use Western Union, the fee is $10.95! This company makes communicating with your family members very difficult.

Like today, each phone call for 15 minutes is $5.45. I had enough money in my account for one more call. They tell me that my account has a balance of $5.44, and is considered insufficient funds. With all the money they get from us customers, you mean I couldn't get a customer’s appreciation of 1 penny? I am fed up with them and I want everyone to know that Global Tel*Link is not helping us but are hurting us and that we should protest and not use them for like a month. I know that that would really hurt them and maybe bring their prices down. If anyone does do a class action lawsuit, please let me know.

This is our first experience with this monopoly and it is a dreadful experience. It's obvious they are taking advantage of a literally captive audience. I was told by Intake that I could set up an account the following day after registering as an approved visitor (required by the facility to register for the phone service). I did so and afterwards got called from GTL saying there were attempts that could not go through and to call them, which I did. The rep I talked to proceeded to tell me I didn't have an account. I assured her I did - I was looking at it online as we spoke. I had deposited funds into it. She insisted I had no account and had to fax them a bill from my phone company proving the number was mine. What baloney. I told her we don't receive a bill - we use Ooma VOIP and they bill our credit card directly - there is no bill with our name, address and phone number on it. She said that without it, we could not receive calls. So I had to ask Ooma to dummy up a bill.

After a week of pleading, they finally did and we were able to fax it in, only to get another message from GTL stating they were "unable to place collect calls to our phone provider" and to call them yet again. Why? I had a prepaid account, which was supposed to make it unnecessary to bill my phone company. In the meantime, I managed to receive calls despite their threats. They don't have a clue. I was charged $15 for 15 minutes, not to mention having $5 sucked out of my account for service fees. Outrageous. A grafting, scamming outfit. Prison systems need to boot out this bunch of thieves.

They wanted the card number I originally used to initiate the refund. I had lost that card and had a replacement, so they said I had to get a check by mail, which was fine, until they said I had to write a letter asking for a refund in writing. That's when I asked for the CEO's name or the president's name. The rep had no idea. When I asked for the corporate number, the rep gave me a customer service number different than the one I called. I informed him that my billing address was correct and I had sufficient funds, so I wanted to know why my card is being declined. I wanted to know why I couldn't make the payment online. He was of no assistance. He wasn't human. I guess what I wanted to hear was, "Hey, sometimes if your using this __ type of card, the payment may get declined" or something, anything!

I need some type of explanation as to why I couldn't make my payment online, which was more convenient and cheaper for me. If you do a payment under $20 online, the service fee is $3. If you call and have to talk to a rep, as I did, the service fee is $5. This company is money-hungry and non-customer service oriented. They do not allow collect calls and the actual time used is excessive when compared to other outside phone carriers. Since you are dealing with inmates, they don't care and thus they are allowed to continue to overcharge their customers i.e. the inmates, and their families. This is the only form of outside communications inmates have other than physical visits. The monopoly should cease and other carriers be allowed to have access to inmate communications. This is a clear unfair trade practice that is allowed since it is dealing with incarcerated people. Global Tel*Link should be stopped and/or forced to allow competition! Service fee of 19% everytime you make a payment - I run a non-profit, legal business helping inmates with all their legal issues, credits, etc. When Global changed from a bill account to prepaid accounts, that's when they started hitting the pocket books of so many people. It's hard enough to have a loved one incarcerated, but to communicate with them is even harder. Financially, it's hard enough but to purposely ripoff the innocent ones is unethical and should be illegal. I thought we lived in America, where people were treated fairly. They prey on captive audience and abuse that right. We fight for animal rights. Why can't we fight for human rights? When a facility is locked down to Global Tel Link, the charges triples. Just like Coca-Cola and Pepsi, they will never be one because of the competition.

Why won't the government stand up to allow competition in this market? I don't get it. Just because someone is behind bars, innocent or guilty; they are still God's children and should be able to communicate with family at a cost that's fair. We need to stand together and treat others the way we want to be treated. Money is not worth the pain of another human being. GBL needs to be fair and change the policy on the fees for making a payment with a visa, master or debit card. The way out for them is mail a check or Western Union a payment. But what happens in the meantime for the families that are worried sick about the incarcerated member? It's not the fault of the innocent ones.

I got jacked for almost double bills. Then, on September 25th, they changed to OffenderConnect here in Virginia. They screw you there. I prepaid $75 and didn't use the entire amount. The next bill was a direct remit even when I had told them that I only wanted prepayment so I was charged more. I had the bill in front of me with the amount and they said I owed them $63. But the bill showed the December calls - most on the prepayment which I had added more money to and said I only owed $26.

I did the calculations and they owed me money. They charged me three times for the final bill on September 25th worth $51.25. I paid it by debit card and have the proof. His dad also paid the same amount on the phone to them. Now, they claim he didn't pay them, but it shows on his bank account statement for October. Today, I told them to remove the direct remit from my account. I only want the prepayment because it is cheaper and I will be watching the bills and money coming out of that. I don't understand why the prisoners want to continue with these scammers. It's bad enough that our family member is in prison; but to hold us up and steal our money? Shame. He ended up being released before we even got the chance to talk, so I requested a refund. I was then charged another $5 fee, which is ridiculous, making it a $10 payment just to put in and refund my money. When I called the first time in early November, I was told it would take 14-16 business days just to refund the remaining $15. So I waited and when I did not see the money credited back to my account, I called again. I asked why I was not contacted about this, seeing as how if I hadn't called I wouldn't have gotten my money. I was told that the representative I was speaking with had no idea. That's always comforting. So I gave him my card number again and I am now waiting another 5 business days just to see this $15. Thank God I'm not starving for money, like some people I'm sure are who have used this service. Bottom line, avoid the hassle and loss of money, and just write a postcard. It would be much more effective anyway.

How, if this is an electronic system they are fast to charge your card but it takes 30 days to put it back in my card? Now I called 35 days later. In this day of Skype and voice over IP, there is no justification for the outrageous fees charged by Global Tel*Link. Three domestic calls of less than one minute cost $25. I understand Global Tel*Link is basically just a billing service masked as a phone service but the company is clearly taking advantage of people in crisis. The executives of this company should be ashamed of themselves. This is not a service, it is a monopolistic rip off. Shame on you, Global Tel*Link. You should be exposed and put out of business.

I set up a $25 prepaid account with GTL. When I received the very first call, before I even spoke to anyone, the recording told me that my balance was low and to add more money! This recording went on for several minutes of useless info before I was finally given the option to accept the call. Little did I know that I was paying for those useless recorded minutes at the beginning of each call at the rate of $1.85 each minute. (It should have said, "To skip this recording, press 0 to connect.") If you add the $3.85 connection fee per call and $4.85 fee each time, you put money on the account. That means GTL sucked up over $14 of that $25 before I even spoke to anyone. Then after 5 minutes of talk time, a recorded message said that I had 60 seconds remaining. The true cost is approximately $4 a minute. That does not include the cost incurred by dropped calls, etc.

When I called the company, they would not answer a single question I asked and were incredibly rude to me. They are very aware that they have a monopoly and that you have no other choice. They are only there to take your money and not to provide any actual service. They capitalize on the poor, the disadvantaged, the incarcerated, and their families. For the first week of calls from my son, we have had at least 5 dropped calls stating an attempt to three way calling - totally not true! As others have also complained, they do this to take your money after talking for 2 minutes, only to have the person dial back, and the balance has decreased by three dollars. Maybe it would help to report them to the BBB - Better Business Bureau. I don't understand how a company could get away with so much for so long; they should be incarcerated!

What she also did was had my account blocked once the account was refilled and after she blocked the account, she called me and tried to give the money back. I asked her, "Would I get my money back as fast as they got & as fast as she blocked the account?" At first she said, "Yes," then she said, "The next business day," then she said," 24 to 48 hrs." and then she said, "7-10 business days." After I asked her which one was it, she got mad and hung up.

Now the money is not in my Global Tel*Link account nor is it in my bank account. Global Tel*Link has very incompetent, unprofessional, rude reps. For those of you who said you called and they asked you to send a copy of your phone bill to them, I want to explain why you have to do this and if you don't, you can't get calls. They ask for a copy because they need to prove who the phone's name is in. They do this so no one can buy a prepaid phone and get a local number, so the calls will be much cheaper and so they know who the inmate is calling. Good luck everyone. I hope someday soon there is another company that can do inmate calls that doesn't want to rip us off any second they can. This company is run by a sad bunch of incompetent idiots! Let me start off by saying that I worked for Sprint for years and had already some dealings with them from their side. It didn't seem to be too bad, but as a customer who wanted to speak with her brother well, it was an absolute nightmare! It began almost 4 months ago when I tried to fax in the necessary paperwork to get an account set up for my cell phone. I waited the 3-5 business days that they tell you about. The first time, they said they had no records that I even called and for me to try and send the info again. I did that and waited the 3-5 days again. I called back, and they said that yes, they had a record that I called but had not received my fax! Needless to say, I went through this at least 3 more times. Every time I called, there was always some kind of story as to why this or that went wrong.

I talked to supervisors. Each promised that they were checking into what may have gone wrong and that they didn't wanna tie me up and just simply return my call. Guess what? I'm sure it will come as no surprise that none of them ever returned my call. They probably just laughed their ** off each time they hung up and talked about what a ** I was. I'm not a quitter and was committed to getting this straightened out. Each and every time I faxed something over, I always confirmed the fax number and info so that I could quickly deflate the argument that I had gotten my info wrong. The very last time that I called, the only fluent English-speaking person (I'm not trying to be racist, but there was a language barrier.) told me that there were other options by way of getting my info to them.

I was floored. I had asked countless times if I could send my info by another method. Each time before, I was told no. Now, this person was telling me that I could actually mail it, email, and of course, fax. I told them to give the info for all three methods. The agent acted like I was over-reacting. After confirming all three methods' info, I sent in my info. I also circled all important info and drew arrows explaining what each piece of info was for. My thinking was that surely to goodness, they had to receive my info somehow. I called back a week later not, exactly hold my breath for good news. They told me that they finally got it and that I could start talking to my brother. Keep in mind, this is almost 4 months later! There were no apologies and no credit for the trouble. Nothing.

My brother is out of state, so I had to write him to let him know that I finally got it straightened out. I'm pretty sure that he thought I was lying, because according to him, his wife in NC didn't have any trouble at all. The first two times he called, the calls did not connect. We were successfully connected on the third attempt. He sounded as if he was underwater. I had to basically guess what he was saying. We "talked" for 10 minutes or less, and the call dropped! I checked my phone, and I had perfect signal. I also checked my online account and noticed that this very short call cost me $8.80. These people are playing mind games with their customers, and they are robbing us blind in the process. I hope that someone with the power to do so steps up and stops this company in its tracks!

Your phone number is not easily located, displayed or found, thus causing at least 15 minutes to 20 minutes to hunt your number down. He would not review the recording, he would not allow me to speak with his supervisor and said, after I spent 30-45 minutes, that I would have to call back at least 24 hours later and he would not take my number and give it to his boss when he or she would be available.

All the work of logging the incident, calling back (instead of a supervisor calling me back) once he/she had the calls available for reviewing. He didn't even want to log my file/complaint so time wouldn't be wasted. Last but not the least, my daughter agreed to accept calls from my son, but was not offered a choice based on her knowledge of the long distance fees and the start-up fee taken for making an account. I've been using their service for 4 months now. Nothing out of the ordinary - I pressed 0 to accept the call and we got disconnected a second later. I waited till he called back and again pressed 0 to connect. This time a minute into the conversation, it disconnected again. I called GTL’s customer service to see if I can get credited or a refund for my 2-minute call that costs me $14 and some change. Miguel the operator didn't seem interested in helping me out. All he kept on telling me was, “We do not do refunds/credit for drop calls. If you don’t like our service, go else where.” What the **! It’s not my fault that your service cut my call. If I could use another service, I would. GTL, you worthless piece of **! You need to stop ripping people off! I don't understand why they are still in service with all these complaints!

First of all, my husband has been away for some time and I have always paid my bills, sometimes in the hundreds of dollars, most of the time with credit in my favor. All of a sudden, I started receiving letters from collections. I figured this must be a mistake. Global Tel*Link claims that they have been sending me bills for almost a year. Now that I haven't paid collections, they're calling my phone off the hook but I don't have any blocks on my phone so I still figure this has to be a mistake. I still received calls.

So guess what? They put a block on my phone and yell at me that my balance is $283 but there is no block on my phone. I asked, "Why did you not put a block at my $150 limit?" All I can get is, "I don't know." So I called to pay my bill. I wanted to talk to my husband. We'll figure the rest out later. Now, I have Global Tel*Link's collections on the phone. I'm told that I have a credit of thirty nine dollars and all I have to pay is $18. I told them, "No way; I don't want to pay $18 and a block will be back on my phone. I've just talked to you." "No, no, this is the amount you owe and we will take the block off right now." I paid what they asked for and they took the block off for less than a day. I called back. They said I owe $59 and some change so I paid $200. They took the block off and told me I have a $142 and change credit. I woke up in the morning with a block on my phone. I called and paid another thirty something dollars.

Now, I have no block but to add insult to injury, they tell me I only have a twenty five dollars credit until I pay three bills on time. Well, guess what? If it were not for Global Tel*Link being my only choice, I would never use them again in my life. We need more choices but it will be your loss because I'm going to keep your twenty five dollar limit for the duration of his stay and you all can know that what once my husband is home. I hope no one else gets locked up because Global Tel*Link will not see one more penny from me. You lost. I hope you go out of business soon.

I don't even know where to begin with all the things wrong with Global Tel Link. Starting with the difficulty in setting up an account to the outrageous fees that they charge, the blocking of phone calls after taking your money and their trained monkeys in customer service who have no idea of what they are doing. When I finally got my account set up and put the initial $25 on it that ended up being $20.25, I was still unable to accept calls because they froze the funds due to my husband trying to call too many times while I was struggling to get started. I tried using their automated system and ended up with the funds frozen on three different credit cards. The credit cards were fine, but their system screwed up entering the charge.

Once again, when I finally got funds into the account, bingo! You guessed it, frozen again because he tried to call twice before I could get it straightened out. I stopped using the automated system and would only speak to a live operator, but that didn't work after a while either and these people have been trained to lie to you about any and every question you may ask. The last straw was this past week when I tried to put money on again and after having live operators declining my perfectly good cards 8 times, they told me that I couldn't put money on with a credit card because I had exceeded the number of credit card payments allowed on the account. What the hell is that! Too many credit card payment! They had been fine before and it took them from 9AM until 11PM to tell me that was the reason they were rejecting my cards. And once again, I couldn't accept calls.

I put money on with Western Union Quick Collect. It went right into my account and bingo! Again, frozen because he had tried to call not knowing the grief GTL was putting me through. I waited the 3 days they said it would take before I would be allowed to use my credit card again, then I waited 3 more days to be safe. I called them to find out the status of my account, spoke to a supervisor who said "The ban had been lifted, go ahead and use your card. It will be fine" and it was declined again. I still haven't been able to speak to my husband. I put money on this morning via Western Union, my husband called 3 times in the course of 4 hours that I couldn't answer and you know, they froze my entire account again!

I called and explained that I needed to speak to him before he goes to court tomorrow to see if they could release some of the funds and they basically told me it wasn't their problem. I asked to speak to a supervisor and was told there weren't any available. I asked for the address for corporate headquarters and was told they didn't have one! The best I could get was a PO box for complaints. That was not what I asked for! I asked about getting my money refunded and I have to wait until they unfreeze it. Then, they took another $7 out as a fee for not letting me use it! What is going on with these people? It is bad enough to have a family member incarcerated, but to have to pay dearly for not being allowed to speak with them is ridiculous!

These people are literally kicking dirt in the faces of people who are already down. Picking our pockets and they have to answer to no crone. They know that you will be back as they have a monopoly on the market. I always thought that was illegal. They all belong in jail with no outside contact just like they are doing to our loved ones! My belief in karma is the only comfort I can find in the hell that this company has put me through and I know their day will come! Stay as far away from GTL as you can get! They are the most dishonest and disreputable company that I have ever dealt with!

I was on the phone for 10 minutes and my call disconnected. Somebody with a brain can do the math. Keep in mind that the phones we use today keeps a counter for every minute you talk, that's how I know how long I was on the phone. At first, I thought it was the jail disconnecting the call but when my son called back, it said insufficient funds. When I called Global Tel Link back, they blew me off. For the last six months, I have been making $20 - $25 payments to my account per week online with debit card. On Saturday, April 28, 2012, I did as usual, made a $20 payment. When I hit "submit", my screen flashed rapidly and then confirmation came up indicating I had made a "$200 payment". Wow! When I went to print the confirmation, it would not let me. I had to wait until Monday to call. After speaking with 4 CSRs to supervisors and being on hold for 15+ minutes each time (call took over 1-1/2 hours), I was told they would not refund my money but they could only freeze all collect calls for 30 to 60 days.

So considering how this has occurred, I really think the person or group that is in charge needs to step up to the plate instead of these people who have to lie to honest hard working people because of a so-called "policy". This is really crooked! It's sad that a company has set up their online payment system to take more money than what the customer is paying and then has an excuse as to why they can't give it back to you. One day, maybe, Global Tel*Link will have to answer for their wrongdoing.

I tried on numerous occasions to have collect calls come to my phone. The prepaid account is sucking me dry. You put $25.00 to start and the next thing you know you are down to $3.00. Their system is faulty. I called to speak to a supervisor (Al) and was told because I set up a prepaid account that I will never be able to receive collect calls. An AT&T representative named Laurie called to help solve the issue. They told her something totally different. They told her that I have to have a prepaid account with them for 6 to 7 months before I can receive collect calls.

Something needs to be done about this company; they should not be allowed to victimize the families of people whose love ones are incarcerated. I have not committed any crime. They are holding us hostage because they have pretty much cornered the market on prison phone services. How can we complain about a government-run service to the government and expect some type of retribution? How come our political leaders are not concerned about this issue, because it doesn't affect them?

This company needs to be monitored very closely. When an individual robs someone, they are arrested, tried and sentenced. This company is robbing us blind, and yet no one is being held accountable. A class action lawsuit should get their attention. They need to be court ordered to fix their problems, compensate the consumers or be put out of business.

I have a friend that used to work at what she would call the evil corporation GTL. She did tell me that there are 3 offices, one in Mexico which is the worst since it's a new office and everyone is new and under cheap labor that can barely speak English or Spanish for that matter, and messes up everything and dumps everything on to the Florida office. There is a third office, which is the Alabama office as well but they close early. Their goal is when they are on the phone with customers, they have to be off the phones within 4 to 5 minutes call per their company or their evil main illogical head manager Elaine, which isn't right. They really need to explain their rules and policy and stop showboating the time of their calls. A lot of people don't know what's going on or how the system works.

As to the issues, if an inmate calls you back to back, it will lock up your account. Your money is actually on the account, but placed on hold from the inmate jamming the account. This part is true because I told this to my brother and he knows to wait 20 minutes to about 30 minutes to call me back if we disconnect or the lines hang up. We have figured it out to a science on that part. Normally in the past, when this did happen, we had to wait over 2 to 4 hours for the line to be back to normal and my brother giving up calling. We also found out that if I'm in the menu options on the phone to accept the call, it's still considered being connected so if my brother thinks I'm not going to accept the call and hang up and all I hear is dead air soon as I connect, I'm still getting charged for the connection (which is so weird). I guess in a sense, I was connected even if my brother didn't talk to me, which is messed up.

Cell phone and landlines issues. If you have a cell phone and your calls are dropped, then they do not issue any credit back to your phone at all. Their reason for this, they think cell phones drop all the time and they don't want to deal with crediting people back money all the time. Landline - if your phone call drops and it's under 5 minutes, they can issue credit back. But if it's a second more like 5 minutes and 2 seconds, they can't issue credit.

Advice by my friend. There are some places that in order to get an account, you have to send a fax of your cell phone and utility bill. If this happens to you, then you have to have the cell phone and utility to match both your name, address, info and make sure to circle your number for the account. The bad part about this is you actually have to wait 3 to 5 business days to even find out if you are able to get an account. I thought as well Global Tel Link was a messed up monopoly, which isn't the case. They are actually a government owned and operated company under the FCC.

There are other companies with them known as DSI or DCI and another company called Suscuse or something to that matter and VAC. What happen is that these groups of companies get together and arrange as to which jail or prison goes to which. So since they are a government company, there is nothing the Better Business Bureau can do since it's all set up by our own government. The other issue there is even though you speak to the reps, most of them actually agree with you. But it's their job and they have to follow the policy that they are scripted or trained to tell you per the company rules. This is why when I do speak to a rep on an issue, I do let them know I know it's not their fault and they didn't set up the rules.

Also according to my friend who worked there, she explained to me the service fees so listen to how this works. You place money on an account, they take out a 19.7 percent of the $25.00 you place down in your account. You now have $20.25, the service charge of the 19.7 was $4.75 so where did that service charge go and why did I have to pay it? It went to the company to pay the workers of the company. Apparently, they used to not charge anything but as the economy went up in prices, so did the start of the service charges (as my friend explained it to me and it made some sense). How many of you would really work 40 hours a week for free? That is something I can't combat because I know I wouldn't do that plus she only made between 8 or 9 dollars there and some change.

I've worked in an insurance and made far more than she did for less than what she has to deal with. As for the charges, any time you make a payment, there is a 19.7 that is on the payment you place. $25.00 up to $110.00. Apparently, some places don't have the fees but that due to where the prison is located or whatever deal the prison or jail made. Okay, that's all I know for now. I'll have to ask my friend more on the company, but some small stuff that I know that I can answer from previous people's post.

One Global Tel Link can't block your collect call on a landline, but your landline company will block you. The charges normally go to your main phone line and charge you that's why, until GTL sends a bill to your phone company and your phone company no longer allows you to receive phone calls. This happened to me and was explained to me from AT&T. Also, most cell phones can't receive collect calls from inmates so that is already on a block. Oh, very important! Placing money on an account, you can only have two credit cards on an account that allow Visa or MasterCard. You can do gift cards, but it has to be reloadable that works with their system and the workers there do not know the ones that will or will not. If you use a regular one time use gift card, it can take the money but mostly it won't take it. If you use more than one card on the system, it can lock up your account and decline your card for usage.

Their system is very wishy-washy from what I know. Otherwise, I know people are mad and pissed off with the company. I know I'm still am, but realistically, I have to deal with them until my brother gets out. I rather tell you some of the tricks and trades of that company to help you deal and know what to expect instead of me ** about it. If anyone needs more help, I'll find out from my friend she will tell me the insides and I'll post it on here.

I was charged with 2 $25 transactions, and only credited 1 $25 transaction, to credit my account. It took them 1 minute to debit my bank account. I was advised to mail in a snapshot of my bank account that shows two transactions were debited. Really? How about faxing that information, or better yet how about going over to the billing department and look at the accounting system, which should display that there were 2 transactions. The core business values stands out with this company, when you call and ask for a supervisor three times, and they are too busy to answer customer service calls. I was on hold for 30 minutes the first time, the second time 20 minutes, and the third time, 30 minutes. The fourth time I called, I was irate and explained that I am not going to be on hold, and that I want to speak to a supervisor in the next 5 minutes, and that I did not want to listen to elevator music.

I stated that at this point, their company are looking at theft and fraud charges, that they will be the one calling from jail. I was told that the supervisor was answering customer service calls, just like the other agents. Hello? Supervisor is equal to supervision, dealing with issues. I explained that I was going to elevate the issue to the local authorities. The priority is, making money; ethical behavior is lacking, as displayed in the customer service, and correcting incompetent transactions. Further, if their software system doesn’t align with what is being charged and credited, I think an audit is justified.

Global Tel*Link phone advanced pay automated system declined my debit card and they deducted the transaction without a bank hold. My complaint is that after speaking with two customer service reps and being told their system was down and I would get a release of my funds after 24 hours, that happened on 2-22-2012 and today is 2-26-2012. Their system is updating ironically after I complained that there isn't any. Records of me having any Global Tel*Link service in the past six months and my number isn't in their system, which is a lie because my fiance have called through Global Tel*Link since last year. I have read other reviews of same incidents but luckily I have phone records and bank statements. Customer rep was unprofessional and had me on hold and came back to phone smacking like she was eating chips. She was so rude and had an attitude. They take money off. He tries to get through but call isn't accepted surprisingly but the $2.75 back on phone. But I can't put $25 back on my card.

I have read, literally, every complaint posted here regarding Global Tel Link. Each and every one is valid and I can identify with almost all of them. The last time I received a call from Lynwood CRDF in Los Angeles, CA was on 2/14/2012. At that time, my balance was $21. The phone call was 11 minutes in length, leaving a balance of $16.31. Today I received another call with the automated system saying that I needed to set up an account to receive calls. This was extremely frustrating, but not a surprise, as this was the third time this happened.

I called the 800-483-8314 number to check my balance and was informed that my balance was $.03. I then called the 866-230-7761 number and finally connected to a human named "Joe" who could barely speak English. I explained the issue to him and he pulled the account up, telling me that I still had $16.31 on the account. I explained to him that I had just received a call from the facility saying that I needed to set up an account. He stated that if an inmate calls back within one minute, that the system would do that. I further tried, and I mean tried to tell him that the issue occurred with the first call and the subsequent calls were at least five minutes apart. It was like talking to a brick wall. I also asked him why the automated balance check system only showed $.03 balance. He then restated the one minute between calls caused the problem. I was barely able to get a word in the conversation. I told him at least five times that the problem occurred with the first call. Obviously, my words fell on deaf ears. He said the $16.31 would be back on the account within 45 minutes. It's been over three hours and everything remains the same. I thanked him for his time, asked to speak with a supervisor, put my phone on speaker and waited for 45+ minutes with no answer. What a surprise...not! I hung up and did a search for Global Tel Link scam. Unbelievable. The web page was full of GTL scam info, which is what brought me to this site.

As I said earlier, this was the third time supposedly having nothing on the account. What happened with the other two times I was told that my credit card had a hold on the account. The same credit card I've used since day one. I used another card to put money on the account. Almost immediately, it all worked once again. He said "the fact is, there was $71 hold" by my credit card company. Yeah, right. I called my bank and they knew nothing about a "hold". So far, they're into me for $125.

GTL is ripping us off and giving kickbacks to the jails and prisons at our expense. I'm looking forward to attorney contact. This crap is, in every sense, robbery! That used to be a crime, didn't it? FYI, since we have no choice but to use GTL, everyone should be advised that if you use the 866-230-7761 number and wait for a human, there is no fee. This has "Class Action Suit" written all over it. God bless all who have been ripped off by GTL.

If you pay the initial fee, you shouldn't have to pay a connection fee each time . I'm not sure how many companies are available for inmates to connect , but the fees are a little outrageous. Why is it allowed? The majority of the people in county jails are not in for serious crimes, and who benefits from these outrageous fees?

So, I drove 45 minutes to the nearest Walmart to buy a prepaid credit card to set up the account and pay $25 so that my 3 year old and I can talk to his daddy. We talked for 14 minutes.

When he called today, I'm told that there is insufficient funds to allow the call to connect. So, I call Global Tel*Link for an explanation and all I get is some rude man telling me that there was a $3 connection fee and the rest was charged for the call. I asked him to break down the amount they charged per minute and was told that he can't do that and if I wanted to continue to receive the calls, I would have to add more funds, end of story.

So, I did the math and I was charged $1.57 a minute. I told them, "Thank you very much for ripping me off, "and hung up. I then called my phone provider and asked about the block that Global Tel*Link told me that Verizon had put on my phone. Verizon says no such block exists and that I should be able to receive the calls, but Global Tel*Link will not allow this to happen.

And it really hurts when this company, which I pay dearly to, to hear her voice, not only overcharges horribly for the service, but the connection is always extremely bad or underwater sounding, if there is a connection at all. I have not heard from my daughter in four days now because without telling me, and for no reason, this fraudulent company blocked my number from receiving her calls. Over the course of three days, she tried to call me at least ten times a day, and every time I picked it up and said hello, Global Tel Link disconnected my call, even though I have plenty of money in my account. This abuse and corruption cannot go on. Now, I am not receiving any calls for two days now.

I finally called Global Tel Link to ask what was the matter that I cannot receive a call, and they said that I have not given them my address or password. Now, I am afraid that they will use the password I gave them to take money from one of my bank accounts. They claimed that my number is now unblocked. I would gladly visit my daughter in jail but I live 160 miles away, so this will be an extreme hardship on me.

I cannot believe that I am paying this company to not only defraud me, but to cause my daughter and myself undue hardship, anguish, strife, and pain. As with the entire criminal justice system, no one cares and no one ever does anything. It is a crime what the jails and Global Tel Link are doing to my daughter and to their families. The abuse is not only inside the facilities, but extends to us just as well, with companies like Global Tel Link. Like the jails, they need to be highly regulated and/or shut down immediately.

I have been sitting on my couch for five days waiting for a phone call and wondering why she doesn't even call now, and this is a crime in itself. The jail will not give her a message; this is another crime, as I am worried.

Tonight the first call also was barely audible and quickly disconnected. The second call about 10 or 15 minutes later was the same so we both hung up. There has to be some collusion between Global Tel and government regulators, for these kinds of shenanigans to continue. What another sad commentary on the state of affairs in our country today.

I got the scare of my life today. I received a call stating that there had been a family emergency and three of my family members were hurt. I was given instructions to dial *72 and a number. They explained some fees that would be charged to my number, which, in panic, I accepted. I am very ill at the moment and I did not need this scam. I have no idea how my number was obtained since my number is not listed. I was told by my phone company that there probably would be charges to my land line. I am still shaking from the scare that I received. Something needs to be done about this company.

Suddenly, we have been unable to receive calls from my son for $1.25 charge that we knew nothing about. The money has been paid and they still refused to unblock the service. They also began tacking charges on my phone that we had never received. Previously, all my charges were paid through my land line telephone service. We have never contacted them for a "prepaid service" but they have decided that I needed one. I thought that you had to verbally set up a prepaid account by calling and/or signing a contract, which we haven't done. No one from their company is willing to solve your problems. They truly sink as a company.

I am unable to accept a collect call on my home phone because you have blocked calls. Have you done this so that you get the money instead of Verizon? I put money on PrePay and cannot hear the party calling me and am charged for the calls. I am wasting dollars every day. It's cheaper for me to go the facility and see him instead of the calls.

Thank you for your rudeness and no concern for others. My complaint is on Global Tel (for inmates in correctional facilities in California).

I sent them a money order to avoid the service fees. And on my first call, they said I was on the phone for 40 minutes and took out $10. I never am on the phone that long, 15 minutes max.

I had to call over and over with no resolution and them being so rude.

I put $25.00 on my daughter's phone with my debit card. I then tried to put $25.00 on my phone. But GTL put that money on my daughter's phone also, even though I had given them my phone number. I then tried to put $25.00 on my phone number again. Again, GTL put that on my daughter's phone. I still couldn't accept a call from my son even though I had just spent $50.00 and keyed in my phone number.

When I finally got to talk to a GTL customer service, they would not move that money to my phone. They were very rude. On another occasion, he had not called my daughter for a few weeks. GTL said that there was no money on the account. When I asked what happened to the money that I put on the account, they responded that it had expired. It costs between $6.00 and $7.00 each time he calls, plus the $5.00 service fee they take for each $25.00 you put on the account. They are robbing us and there is nothing we can do about it if we want to keep in touch with my son.

When I put an initial $25.00 on my son's account after the card info has been received and debited from my account, it tells me my call will now be put through. But it gets dropped every time, even though they charge the $3.00 for that call. Then, when my son calls right back again, I am charged another $3.00. I am not talking about the initial $5.00 service fee. This has happened several times. I want a refund of those initial $3.00 charges. Thank you!

Global Tel*link charges $4.85 just to connect a call to an area code different from the one you are in. After that outrageous amount, they then charge 40 cents a minute. These prices are outrageous! They have inconsistent services such as cutting your phone call off after you pay the connection fee and talk for two minutes to call back, telling you that you have to pay the connection fee again! They are ripping people off.

I put money on my account so I can talk to my son in Men's Central Jail in downtown Los Angeles, Ca. They take various amounts of money for a service charge each time. They have no consistency at all and even charge for incomplete calls. This is not right and as far as I am concerned, this a scam!

I purchased a $20 dollar reload to my phone using Global Tel on September 19 or 20 and total charges came up to $25. I received one phone call of one minute and when my daughter tried to call me back later that day, there wasn't any money left.

I used this system before and this is the second time this happens. I need a refund or reimbursement.

This company has debited my bank account on two separate occasions, without my knowledge. I used their system to put money on my son’s books. Later that day, someone stole money from my account. Then three days later, they took money again. I contacted them only to be abused verbally and hung-up on. I am filing fraud charges against this company. They are not fit to be doing business.

I have noticed that my payments to my GTL phone account have not been applied to my account in August. There are 5 separate debits from my bank account that were not applied, totaling to $130.00. This has caused me to begin investigating this company. I called them tonight and was told to fax them my bank statement to prove that the money was debited. I am faxing that information to them. I hope this company gets shut down for misusing funds.

I received continued messages from this company early in the morning telling me that an unnamed inmate from an unnamed prison would like me to accept a collect call and that I need to give them credit information to complete it. I have not answered any of these calls but others likely would. The entire scenario smells of phishing to me.
