We have had Toyotas for over 14 years. The comfort and reliability have been outstanding. I have recent changed to a RAV4. This car is great on safety features on the highway as around town. The lane changing, blind side protection, cruise on the highway are excellent. This car is very safe and I have had no major issues since I got it. I have a routine inspection every 6 months and always pass with flying colors.

My Rav 4 is a 2017. I love the appearance of the car and handling. A couple of issues is that it doesn't have a lot of power (it's a 4 cylinder) and I don't get that great of gas mileage (20 city and about 24 hwy). I would expect better gas mileage. They checked it out and recommended that I use premium gas which is ridiculous. Other than that I have no issues with the car.

This is my 4th hybrid. Replaced a Prius V and the Rav 4 is more than adequate replacement. It takes some getting use because of its truck like qualities. Some features are not standard on the XLE. Would take more safety features in lieu of sunroof.

The Rav 4 wasn't exactly what I had in mind, but upon taking for a drive I was sold. My previous car was quite low and wow, what a difference it makes in driving a vehicle that sits up higher. For one, you get a better view of what lies ahead. Another plus is when the heavy rains come, I'm not concerned about going through the flooding and getting my vehicle wet from the bottom. Unfortunately, that did happen to me with my prior car. Lastly, the car sits up higher, but not too high for me to feel when heavy winds come. The interior is roomy enough for me and I absolutely love having the option of larger cargo space that I often need. The exterior is pleasing to the eyes, as well. When the time comes, you bet I'll be looking for this model again.

Although I think this is a very expensive car oh, more expensive than it needs to be I love it. It handles well, is beautiful, and it's fun to drive. However, rather than integrated navigation I opted for navigation through my phone and Bluetooth their Toyota Scout GPS link app. It is the worst. It loads and reloads and I am not able to use my phone for the first minute or two I'm in the car because it keeps reloading. And it's not even a good GPS system because it frequently loses a signal. So I end up using Waze instead. My two other pet peeves are 1) when you fill the tank it doesn't sell unless you keep topping it off and topping it off, and 2) the passenger front seat sits so high that my passengers sometimes touch the ceiling with their heads. And none of them are very tall so this would not work for someone who was.

We chose the Rav 4 for its good value and stellar track record on consumer reports. Unfortunately, we experienced a problem with leakage into the passenger floorboards resulting from a design flaw in the sunroof drainage and the dealership refused to cover under the warranty. This frustrating experience prevented me from giving them full stars in a few categories.

I have owned several Rav4s and have really appreciated not only the style of the vehicle but also the safety features. It is the only SUV I have owned that drives like a car. Repairs have been minimal as well. Toyota Care has been instrumental in maintaining the vehicle and the additional roadside service has been helpful.

For a smaller SUV the 2019 RAV4 is a fantastic purchase! Tremendous amount of interior room and amazing safety features. Comfortable driver and front passenger seats and more than ample leg room for back seat passengers. Lots of trunk space that comes standard with a cargo cover.

I chose Toyota because of their reputation of being a well built car that will last a lifetime. They don't have problems, and provide dealerships that give excellent service. I would highly recommend a Toyota product to anyone. This vehicle is my last and that is why I chose Toyota.

When approaching an intersection I was slowing down and applied the brakes on icy pavement, but the brakes locked up and I slid into the intersection. Fortunately the traffic saw my problem and didn't move. When my front tires got onto the dry pavement I was able to control the car and turned around to avoid hitting a vehicle. I tried everything to stop, but to no avail. When I got home I called Toyota's service department and told them what happened. The man said when the brakes lock there is nothing you can do until the car slows down by itself. I have a 2013 Rav 4 XLE with all-wheel drive. I could have been killed if the traffic was moving when I entered that intersection. I will not get another Toyota unless this problem is fixed.

I own a Toyota RAV4 2004 .Through the years of ownership this has been the best car ever. It is great in gas. I get about 25 mpg in city driving. Yearly inspection has pretty much been a breeze. Almost no repairs. Above and beyond regular maintenance. So if you have a small budget this is the car for you. I only have 79,000 miles on mine and in time will be buying another one!!!

Bought the 2018 RAV4 brand new. Few weeks later after purchase I notice dashboard rattles. These appear and disappear randomly. The dashboard rattles on the passenger side in the winter and on the driver side in summer. Both, driver and passenger doors also rattle in the summer, but tend to disappear in the winter. I also found that the ignition key is smooth while turning in the winter, but rough in the summer. There is something going on with temperature. I believe that this RAV4 made in Canada wasn't put together well. Maybe the Japanese version would have been trouble free. I still have issues to this day.
Fast forward 1 year and I started getting noises while pumping the brakes. I took the car to the dealership only to a mechanic to tell me that the noise and that everything was normal. I took the car back for a second visit. The service manager test drove with me, heard the noise and acknowledged that it was a problem related to brakes not being properly lubricated at the shims, but believed that if he were to fix it, it would come back in few weeks and that I should just live with it. I got too fed up with the sound and Toyota not wanting to do anything to fix the problem, that I bought a proper jack and parts and went ahead and took apart the brakes and lubricated everything. This fixed the problem and it has not come back. I also hear noises from the steering while while turning. What a lemon this car has been.
Fast forward 6 months and I started to hear a loud knock on the engine whenever I would start the engine after it had cooled down for 5 to 7 hours. The knock would disappear after the engine reached operating temperature. I took the car to the dealership. They troubleshooted the issue and found out that the knock was due to carbon buildup on my valves. Apparently, the carbon issue was due to my city driving. In my commute I have to deal with a lot of traffic. The dealership reportedly cleaned the valves using some top engine cleaner. I no longer hear the engine knock at startup, but I am having other problems now. Ever since I got the car back from the dealership the transmission has been shifting poorly. The car jerks whenever it shifts and the engine Revs are all over the place.
I am not sure if the dealership damaged my transmission or it was a coincidence and the transmission was on its way out like my many problems with the car. I am going to the dealership tomorrow to have them look at the new problem…This was my first Toyota and for sure my last one. I should have stuck with Honda or gone with the Mazda CX-5.

I got a Toyota RAV4 at Findlay Toyota in Henderson, NV for my wife, 2 years ago. When the car had 12K miles it got a weird sound when she pushed the brakes. The service department said it was just dirt in the brake pads and that it would disappear with time. At 14K miles the sound remained, and the service department insisted it was dirt. At 19K miles the sound still was there and the service department said that was a problem with those cars, but the new ones didn't have the problem and that we have to replace the brakes at our own cost. This is unbelievable, they knew the car had that problem, but they just transfer the solution to the customer. We have to pay for their mistakes.
I called Toyota and spoke with a service manager and she just said there was nothing they could do and that if I was not satisfied I could write a bad review, which means they don't care, they just want your money and once they get it you are not their customer anymore. 30 years ago I lived in Colombia, South America, and I got a Toyota Hilux. The car also had problems with the brake system; when I had to stop real fast, the car started spinning (it made about two 360 degrees circles at 65 miles per hour). The story was the same, the customer service department said they didn't know anything about that problem and that I had to pay to solve it. Three years later that car got a recall due to that problem, and the solution was to replace all the hydraulic hoses for bigger ones, but I already had done that out of my pocket. It seems to me Toyota still needs to learn how to do brake and needs more training for the service department.

Today I was told our RAV4 “condenser” had a crack/hole in it which they’re assuming was caused by a rock flicking up while driving and that it’s NOT covered under warranty... Today is also THREE WEEKS since we picked this car up from the dealership! Ironically I had read about this happening to people in America (I’m in Australia) a few days after picking the car up and was planning on speaking to Toyota about it when getting our bullbar installed (4 weeks post pick up) to see if this was known issue/anyway to prevent it here in Australia or if American models are designed slightly different.
We didn’t want to go installing anything ourselves and then have to take it off to get the bullbar put on so thought surely that won’t happen to me so quickly. I’ll be fine. Well wasn’t I so wrong! So not only is our brand new car damaged and not covered under warranty, they have no idea how long it will take to get the part to fix it being such a new model...
So if any of you value your gorgeous new RAV4s, your cool air conditioning and your money (I’ve been told we will be looking easily over $1000 AUD to fix, that’s just a guess from the dealership without parts/labour quotes), I’d STRONGLY suggest you install something (we are going to look at getting metal security fly screen, cutting it to size and securing it inside the hood somehow as I can’t find anything made in Australia for this) ASAP to prevent this happening! I am devastated and will be contacting every department possible to fight this as I feel this is a massive design fault that could be prevented!

In 2009 purchased my 4th Toyota, loyalist since 1981. All previous purchases were great. Lending an average 250K no major problems until this one, 2006 Rav4 2.4L Limited Pearl White. This vehicle has under 120K miles, w/ 4 major problems. Bought auto used at 36K miles. Around 60K the transmission started doing funky things, while feeding gas to travel, it would jerk and stop the feed, scared me silly, kept thinking how lucky I was didn't happen at 65 MPH w/ someone behind me.
Dlr could not make it happen, brought it up 3 times w/ them. Transmission business was able to make it happen. After about 30 minutes of heated up engine from a stop and start ie. stop sign or light, at 20 MPH it would literally stop feeding, let foot off gas, and re feed slowly will get it going again, but very dangerous when in any busy town (102,000 miles). Just out of warranty. Replace the transmission at a tune of 4K Toyota pricing.
Prob. #2. From the 36K miles noticed w/ first 3k miles I needed to add oil, the engine uses oil and Toyota is aware, was notified of problem w/ letter from Toyota after my warranty was up, around 2015. Prob. #3. The steering started knocking and continues to on occasion around 109K mls, while turning the wheel. There's a recall and though the dealer has said they'd get me in it's been over a year since recall and they still (2nd ask of them) have not set my appointment. They only fixed one recall. The belts, but have told me as they get the parts I'm on list to set an appt. Cabin smell, I replaced the air filter for this under the glove box. Now the beautiful white pearl paint is peeling from roof. Can not wash the area w/ water pressure, it was never hit or scratched in this area.
I bought 3 of my 4 Toyotas from this dealer in Muncy, PA. I am done w/ Toyotas. This is a Limited edition. 1st car Corolla from CA State 1981 New, 400K+ miles when last spoke to buyer whom I sold for 2K w/ 245K miles on it, and kept in touch w/ buyer. Next was a Cressida v6, 1994. Great vehicle never any problems. Next was a 1998 Camry v4, I traded the Cressida, no front wheel drive so decided I wanted FWD, and again 245K miles and sold for 2K in 2009. But when I bought this Rav4, financed at 0% for 5 years used through Toyota, paid it off in 2010, thinking no problems, until the transmission occasionally around 60K would do its jerk stop as I am feeding gas going uphill usually long driveway. At 106K miles it started happening all the time. When weather hot it happens a lot.
Am disabled and cannot afford new Transmission. Praise God as he has kept me safe, but do not go anywhere w/ distance. I have borrowed friends' cars to do specialty Doctor visits. Would like to see more reviews based on the transmission problems as I am sure that others have had this same experience other than the 2 I have read about.
I also noticed on your site that all those who have experience the paint peeling process, all have white Rav4s. The other models have been great, but not only am I let down w/ Toyota's hiding the transmission problem, but that the dealer has helped them to hide their problem, and is not acting responsibly w/recall notices. Truly steer clear of the Rav4s w/ 4 cyl 2.4 engines. Even their Matrix used this engine. I have done extensive research to try to find a vehicle that gets 200K miles without any expensive fixes. Because of my disability I have trouble w/ low cars getting in and out, which leaves me w/ much fewer choices than I prefer.

My car does not run that well but my main complaint is the constant odor of rotten eggs and a burning smell. The problem has to show up on their computer in order for them to fix it. The assistant manager said the guys do not take the cars for test drives because they work on profit. I feel like I want to give the car back but it would affect my credit too much. Now with the years getting in mind that nobody cares all we do is touch-paint when the little chipping starting. And car wash is never with even using a simple hose-only hand wash and very rare.

Updated on 04/18/2019: After waiting over a month for the results after a four hour inspection by a Toyota Independent Analysis Engineer, I was expecting a full copy of the test results. Thinking my packet would be listing the equipment used, and info on the readings. Instead, I only received a one page letter from Toyota Legal Claims with a brief paragraph from the four hour inspection. Toyota could not find any evidence of my SUA experiences, and said "bye-bye."
When I asked for a copy of all the reports so I may know of the machine/programs and the methods used to conclude their denial/decision findings - they refused. I am bewildered as to why I am not allowed to receive a copy of the full investigation/inspection of the extensive report. Is this is the response from a major Car Company. Is this the way the Japanese Corporate Division operates and instruct their U.S. division to operate as well? The sporadic SUA still exists with my RAV 4 and I need the problem fixed/replaced as soon as possible, and will try sending my request again.
Original review: 2001 RAV 4 Dangerous Sudden Unintended Acceleration Problems... Owner periodically experienced Sudden RPM Engine Racing Problems usually when stopped at a traffic light or stop sign with foot correctly placed on brake pedal - while engine idling. Back in 2003 or 2005, Owner received a notification card (#SSC601) entitled "A Special Service Campaign" sent by Toyota Motor Co. instructing that his RAV4 ECM unit be "reprogrammed" with new "Logic" (their words) as instructed. Owner had RAV4 serviced as requested, however RPM problem persisted, occasionally emitting Engine Diagnostic Light. Repeated servicing of RAV4, the RPM racing occurrences were mentioned to Toyota Service Center, however tech/mechanics unable to locate problem.
This was the start of increased sporadic shifting and acceleration jerking problems. Either the reprogramming by the Toyota Service Center was intentionally erased preventing the diagnostic codes: P0750, P0753,P0755, P0758, or P1760 as designated for a new ECM and Trans-axle unit from the second notification as described by Toyota in a corporate letter (the owner’s first service notification was sent via a small red card with no mention of transmission trans-axle problem just a "reprogramming" of the ECM).
Owner sent a letter to President Toyoda of Toyota Motor Co. back in February 23, 2010 about recurring check engine diagnostic light. Received a letter from Customer Relations dated March 04 2010 and called Customer Relations, as instructed in the letter and L/M. In the interim, Owner received another notification from the Toyota Motor Company, this time in a detailed two page letter form Entitled ZTL - Certain 2001 through 2003 Model Year RAV4 vehicles which specifically listed owner's VIN # in the header of the letter. An extended 150,000 miles was part of a settlement from another notification letter owner had previously received back in 2010 about a Class Action Lawsuit filed involving owners with RAV4's manufactured in 2001-2003.
When letter was presented about extended warranty to Toyota Service Center and owner's recurring harsh shifting, jerking and reported RPM Sudden Acceleration Problems, with continual reoccurring engine light problem, the service tech reported no service codes that matched the diagnostic codes for a full ECM nor Transmission replacement (Owner doesn't recall getting a Full Diagnostic Report Copy to confirm codes listed from the report). Owner requested ECM Module and Transaxle/Transmission replacement however Toyota Service Center would not do a free replacement and that I would be charged plus labor as well. Note: This was the same Toyota Service Center that the owner initially had the first recall notice about re-programming the ECM with new "logic".
The class action lawsuit letter stated that the warranty on the owner's RAV4 would be extended for 150,000 miles or ten years for a "harsh shift condition" that would only require the ECM to be REPLACED and if needed, replacement of the Automatic Transaxle unit. However, this servicing and replacement would only be implemented with the following specific codes: P0750, P0753,P0755, P0758, or P1760. Owner sent letter to Toyota Motor Co. on August 27, 2010 with receipts from Toyota Service Center regarding engine light problem and recurring RPM engine racing problem. Request for reimbursement was denied in a response letter dated November 1, 2010 from Toyota regarding "not meeting criteria under Csp 01-03 my RAV4 Transaxle Ecm Warranty Enhancement".
RPM problems would reoccur throughout the years, usually at traffic light or at stop sign, while foot was on brake pedal, owner always had control as RPM would rev up, wild-like so fast and very loud, then would usually stop when shifted to P, owner adds, "In February 2018, while finishing transaction at Wells Fargo Bank ATM Drive-Thru, I placed my foot on brake pad and shifted from P to D, and as I lifted my foot from brake pedal the RAV4 RPM accelerated wildly, in a fraction of seconds and this time the engine and the 4 WD traction of my RAV4 began to jerk forward out of the ATM Terminal like a rocket, luckily my quick foot action immediately went back down on my brake pedal and shifted back to D, the RPM was still racing very loud and sounded like it was going 75 mph (which is the sound of my engine when driving with the flow of other vehicles on the freeway.").
In June 2018, owner had transmission fluid and oil changed with new filters, RPM problem seemed to subside- (Owner kept all RAV4 service invoices). A serious occurrence happened in February 2019, while coming to complete stop at congested T/L intersection, owner reports sudden RPM/engine racing wildly causing SUA (Sudden Unintended Acceleration) RPM/Engine jerking forward while owner applies more brake/pedal pressure - force of sudden RPM's fast acceleration with combination of RAV4's 4WD traction/force and foot on brakes still moves RAV into rear end collision. Owner quickly shifts to P-Park.
Damage occurred to front of owners RAV4 and back of SUV in front of RAV4. Police Report filed and owner immediately reported incident to Toyota Motor Company. A case number was filed with the Toyota Motor Company and a third party Engineer/Inspector was dispatched by Toyota Motor Company to examine RAV4 and download EDR and other devices regarding the Sudden Unintended Acceleration with the strange sporadic re-occurring RPM/Shifting problem.
Owner is awaiting response from Toyota to determine cause of mechanical or electrical (ECM) malfunction/problem. Since the RAV4 OD reads 111,240 miles owner believes Toyota should extend "in good faith" the 150,000 extended Warranty and cover all costs incurred to replace defective parts and cover labor and damages incurred due to SUA to his RAV4. The final report will take two to four weeks and then determined by Toyota and their legal department regarding reimbursement and extended warranty determination for service and repairs.

I have owned a Toyota Rav4 for about 4.5 years, which I bought brand new. Currently my large issue is my radio has quit working and is stuck on a rebooting screen. I contacted my local dealer and they requested I bring it in for a diagnostic service which would cost me $80 dollars. I even called Toyota to speak with the corporate office and was told there was nothing they could do unless I pay for the diagnostic test and they cannot waive the fee due to the the dealers again being independently owned. I discussed researching the issue and noting several separate forums where multiple reports were documented and again no help from Toyota.
The cost of a new radio through the dealer, which was the end result for most of the complaints I saw, was $900-1200 dollars. This is a very large number for a faulty radio issue that consumers are having to deal with. I was hoping there was a recall or extended warranty offered since this is a reoccurring theme but Toyota did not back their brand and stated to just "call back" after a diagnostic was done but could not "promise" anything.

I am writing this review in the hopes that Toyota will see it and take action. If you are an owner of a Toyota you are probably in the same vote that I am. After 15 recalls and an engine rebuild within 100k miles, I am finding that Toyota is now designing their vehicles with the idea that the original owner will be rid of the car before 100k miles is reached. The point that has led me to write this review is with the Recall for the rear suspension where the car would come out of alignment leading to a dangerous steering issue.
Toyota decided the solution would be to remove the adjustability for the TOE by gluing the parts together with epoxy. After 20K miles of hwy use, my car is not out of alignment again, and Toyota says the only solution is to replace the parts and redo the recall. After research I have found replacement parts from Moog that actually address the "weak" suspension parts and will solve the issue long term, however, it is going to cost over 500 dollars to repair. Toyota should resolve this engineering mistake for their customers rather than trying to put glue on the issue and hoping that their customers stay safe.

Update on 05/09/2020: Ok I wrote a review on my Rav 4. The dealer did nothing for me. I called the Main number for Toyota. They said to me if I don't like it trade it in so I did. I got a Jeep. I think this is the best car I ever had. The Rav 4 was A hybrid and my Jeep with the V-6 gets 30mpg all the time. The reason is the Jeep has a 9 speed transmission. The Rav 4 has a CVT transmission that's always got the motor rpms up so it uses a lot of gas. And what they don't tell you if you did some research just on that CVT transmission you will see other Car companies have tried them for 2 to 4 years and stopped them Because when they break there is no repair for them. You have to get a new transmission and depending on the car you're looking at 5,000 to 8,000 dollars to replace it.

I had one (Toyota RAV4) for a few weeks, during the summer. It worked great, until one night a couple deer decided to commit suicide. Then I learned that this particular make and model of car is 'designed' to sacrifice itself to save the occupants. By that I mean, a 150 lb deer did nearly $5000 in damage to the front end, and the second smaller deer did over $1000 in damage to the driver's side (where it ran into the car). Until the point of the accident, I was pretty happy with the vehicle.
Nevertheless, it got reasonable mileage, and allowed for a fair amount of stuff to be hauled. The kids thought it was pretty comfortable for up to 3 hour trips. From the front, the longest trip we took was in the 12 hour range (non-stop), and because of the way the seats could be moved, it was real nice. No strange cramps or unreasonable fatigue. For all those purposes, it was nice. And the visibility, while driving, wasn't terrible... no huge blind spots.

In 2008 I was test driving vehicles to replace my Ford Explorer. I happened upon the Toyota Rav 4. Sitting in the driver's seat I said, "Wow, a woman engineer must have designed this interior." There was so much storage and such clever use of space. Standout was the dual glove boxes; the narrow upper box was controlled by an air vacuum. A coin receptacle, a nice split on the center console, ample room beneath the back seats and the enormous space underneath the back deck. This was the perfect vehicle for camping and kayaking with the additions of cross bars on the roof racks, a tow package and rock guards. The storage areas kept tow rope, chains, flares, tie downs, extra dog food, emergency supplies, a blanket, a travel pillow, extra jackets, dog bowls, picnic supplies and more all stored away out of sight.
Change was at hand for meters. The full size spare tire was mounted on the back instead of the hateful underside of the car, inaccessible in deep snow or mud as two occasions proved. For adventurers, a tire on the back of the car only makes sense. However, anyone who's had to empty out the back of their car to get to the spare tire I would think would agree that full spare tires should be on the back of the car. I digress... Enter the 2018 Rav 4. Wanting to reduce my carbon footprint I selected the hybrid. The Rav 4 has been an AWESOME car. However, I sat in the test driven car and remarked to my husband at the lack of storage. His response: "I guess Tesla hired away that woman engineer." Funny? Yes. Good gas mileage? Yes. Poorly designed interior? Yes.
I bought it anyway, and like it, but my next car will be a 2008 Rav 4. I'll repaint it, (hopefully) put a new electric engine it, a tow package, and crossbars on the luggage rack. My only regret is it won't be my original 2008 Rav 4. I suggest Toyota rethink the interior. Why have an open shelf instead of the super cool second glove box with vacuum control? Nothing stays in place on an open shelf in a moving vehicle. The second, smaller glove box gives you a place to access needed items rather than the single oversized box through which one must dig to find just about anything. There is wasted space in the interior. Coins are yet needed and used; there's room on the dash for a coin holder. Hire back whoever designed the 2008.

There's plenty of room. And I know that people say it sucks because it's a 4 CYLINDER, but they didn't drive it. So, how could they judge it? I have the RAV4 and a 08 V6 Dodge Charger, and the RAV4 is faster than my Charger. This isn't your grandma's 1990 V4 sentry. The new RAV4 feels like it's a V6. And the seats in the RAV4 are very comfortable. I have a herniated disk injury in my back, and all my back pain goes away when I sit in my RAV4. Most importantly, my RAV4 is a dependable car. I know it will get me where I need to go. I can't say that about my Charger, wish I could though. The 2018 RAV4 Adventure AWD is really a spectacular vehicle.

What angers me is that my last service I said I thought the brakes had issues. This was May 4th 2017. I had 52,250 miles then. Anyway my dealership in Seaside, California said the brakes was perfectly fine. Here we are on the 16th of December 2017 and I had new brakes put on and my rotors repaired. Well I drove my car this morning and it made a horrific grinding noise. Metal on metal. I no longer trust the dealership. I have had too many problems with poor service.
One time they even put the wrong engine oil in my vehicle. I paid $339.66 and the brake repair job wasn't properly done. May 2017 at a routine oil change we were told there was a transaxle leak that needed immediate attention at an authorized dealer. There we were told the repair cost will be $3000! We've done nothing to cause this. The manager said this only happens in cars with 100K miles. We emailed Toyota--no response yet. We called Toyota and were told "That happens sometimes. Nothing we can do." We find that completely unsatisfactory. I don't know how anyone could feel safe driving a car that "breaks" so suddenly and gives no warning that a repair is needed.

Problem occurred this past March with my 2006 Toyota Rav4, 109500 miles well maintained. Usually following a cold start, car would unexpectedly lose power steering and most dash warning lights would flash on. This was annoying at slow speeds and dangerous at higher speeds. Usually, I could pull over, turn off and restart and the problem would disappear. Had it the dealership three times and they could not figure out problem. Also tried at local garage, same result. Finally took to a different dealership, printed off from internet blogs similar problems with others, and described in detail to the service manager who took an interest.
They diagnosed the problem as the alternator, which I had replaced a year earlier with a non-Toyota aftermarket replacement alternator. According to the dealership service manager, Rav4's do not do well with non-Toyota replacement alternators. They installed a new Toyota alternator, and there have been no problems or issues since.

So after having a handful of Honda's CR-v and never had any issues, I decided to buy a used Rav4 from original owner with only 109K on odo. Was a good price and car had been maintained at dealership only so what could go wrong??? Well after the first weekend driving the car to Monterey from San Francisco, I did check the oil and noticed it needed some which was strange because previous owner had just did an oil change. So I added some thinking it was a mistake from the guy who had worked on it only to find out upon my return in the Bay that it needed oil again, about the same amount!!! Not good, so I did a little research only about this model on to find out that there was a flaw in piston/rings design from factory and these engine were known to burn oil!!!
Damn this is my first Toyota and it's not a good start, so as many unhappy owners I started the process of dealing with my local Toyota dealer and see what they could do for me... It did take a few attempts but they were really accommodating and finally agreed to rebuild the engine at no charge! So engine is running fine but within a few hundreds miles, everything else has started to fall apart! Front shocks, wheel bearing on all 4 wheels, control arms, etc... Not sure when this will end as after replacing all these parts, I still have a major knocking sound on the front right wheel going over speed bumps and when backing up the car!
This is unreal as this car is an absolute lemon. Everything pretty much has needed attention and I just want to leave the thing on the side of the road and walk away from it. I made another appointment with Toyota of Marin as to see whether they can diagnose the issue and solve it so I can sell the damn thing... Thanks Toyota but never again.

Yes, I too have fallen victim to Toyota's insipid engineering and unconscionable "customer care". I bought my used 2006 Rav4 in 2007 with only 1000+ miles. Like countless other Toyota owners that states their story, I am no longer eligible for the "Warranty Enhancement Program" because I am, according to them, ten years past the date of first use. That's where it gets sketchy. Since I bought mine used, how am I supposed to know when the date of first use is?
I have also had the oil consumption test performed and it failed. It was documented at the dealership when the first notice came out to get the test performed despite the part to fix the issue was being made. When the notice came out that the part was available, I made a beeline for the dealership to get my Rav4 repaired. They told me I would need to do another test, so I opted to get it done. Couldn't hurt, right? I did the test but they claimed it was invalid because I went past the mileage. That shouldn't matter anyway as the first test proved to be positive for excessive oil consumption. The dealership then told me I needed to do it again, but even if I did, they didn't know when they could accommodate me as they were backed up with the repairs and didn't have enough parts.
Earlier in 2016, I took it to another dealership location and they said the same thing: need another consumption test, not enough parts and there was a long wait to get the car repaired. They said they would call when they got the part in, but never called me. When I called them a few times throughout the year, they said it was still a wait. Around September of last year, I went to the dealership. I first went to get the test done and they said the part was in but again, could not fit me in their schedule. I waited again and called to see if they could accommodate me and that the part was in. This was mid-January of this year (2017). I wanted to confirm that they could perform the repair under the "warranty enhancement program". After giving my VIN over the phone, he said my car was no longer eligible because it's ten years past the date of first use.
My step was to call Toyota Customer Service and they were no help. After spending approximately three hours on the phone and three days later, a "Customer Service Manager" called me to tell me that they won't honor the program with my vehicle, even after my above explanation. Apparently, after reading these other stories it looks like another class action lawsuit will be in the works. I will be pursuing it and filing complaints with the Attorney General, BBB and my Congressman. Toyota chooses to be shady and conduct illegitimate business selling faulty cars that they refuse to fix. We'll see about that!

Currently leasing and brand new 2016 RAV4. At 4000 miles the brakes began squealing on moderate braking during the first 3 stops I took after starting the car. Every time. Several visits to the dealership, and an email to the CEO, I was told that this was NORMAL. That oxidation on the rotors was the cause. They then re-surfaced the rotors, something that they shouldn't have done because this was a fix Toyota. Came out with in a resolution form for a known issue on Canadian manufactured cars not the Japanese ones like mine is, but still that didn't fix the issue. Toyota then sent out a field rep who told me that there was nothing wrong with the car and he couldn't duplicate the sound. Yet, the techs at the dealership and video evidence proved otherwise. Still having the same issue as I type this.
Prior to that rep coming out I had given specific instructions to the dealership to call me when he arrived so I could test drive the car with him so that I could show him and they never relayed that message. Corporate Toyota told me that there was nothing further they could do for me and that this was how the car was going to operate. They refused to re-dispatch the field tech so that I could test drive with him. And then refused to cover warranty on the rotors after they compromised them from the resurfacing. Me and the technician together drove another identical new RAV4 (with same MSRP) and both of us do not find the pulls on this one. So the problem is just with the one I purchased. This adds a lot of stress and distraction as it needs constant adjusting the steering wheel. It is a safety issue due to the extra distraction. It is not a normal pull. It pulls heavily and even turning the steering wheel a little bit left, within 3 seconds the car will go to the right on every lane of all types of road, consistently. I owned several other Toyota (some are 1 year new) and none of them has this issue. (This is after all realignment!) Very disappointed with this brand new car and introduces a lot of hassles after spending 27K on it! Because tire/alignment are not the issues I expect some defective parts, however the dealer say they cannot fix it...

My husband's seatbelt did not hold and his airbag did not deploy correctly when he got into an accident. He broke his sternum. The trauma unit doctors said it takes a tremendous amount of force to break your sternum, so he had gone directly into the steering column without the seatbelt or airbag slowing him down. The doctors noted that there was no bruising from the seatbelt, so it had not caught at all. The broken bone was displaced, with one piece of the bone dangerously close to piercing his heart. It took months of pain to heal.
We reported it to Toyota immediately and they sent their "own" team to investigate the totaled RAV4 and reported to us that there was nothing wrong with the seatbelt or airbag. We protested their findings, citing recalls and the doctor's notes, but they did not care. When I posted warnings on their Facebook page, they blocked me from making any more comments and deleted my posts, even though their page says, "We value your opinions. Please join us." Any company who blocks a customer's negative remarks is hiding something.

Earlier in 2015 I carried my 2015 RAV4 to the New Bern, NC for brake problems. The pedal went almost to the floor before stopping and seemed to continue leaking down. The dealership looked at the problem and determined that this was normal for the 2015 RAV4. I proceeded to drive the RAV4 a few weeks until I had a close call when stopping. After making another appt with the dealership, the service manager went for a ride with me so I could show him the problem. He did not see a problem. We then took a new 2015 RAV4 for a test drive so I could compare the results. The new RAV4 4 stopped a little better but nothing like the 2010 Prius that would throw you through the windshield!
After much discussion, the service manager agreed that there seemed to be some problem with the brakes. He stated that he would adjust the pedal to the max and do further testing. After some time, the car was ready. The pedal was adjusted, new pads were put on the front, and the back pads were resurfaced. The brakes are better, but not as good as the Prius or my previous 2012 Camry.
I later carried the RAV4 to the dealership to check out a fuel light which had come on my last trip with still 4+ gallons still in the tank. Also, I got only 19 miles per gallon on totally highway driving. The advisor seemed to think this was not abnormal but checked it out. Nothing found. I complained about the dirty oil after only 4500 miles. Again, I had only my Prius to compare it to. After discussion, the service mgr agreed to change the oil & filter to hopefully correct the problem although the 10000 mile mark had not been reached but timewise (over a year), it was due. We'll see.

Please note that I have been driving & have owned Toyota vehicles in excess of 40 years. In all those years I have promoted and sold Toyota vehicles as a consumer. My opinion of this manufacturer has changed drastically the last couple years. I had a 2005 RAV4 limited that I loved. After the last time someone crashed into it and the car was totaled in 2009 I purchased a new Rav4 V6 limited. I experienced the gas pedal recall but I treated the car as an automatic. 2011 I had a leak of the rear differential fluid and the dealership goodwilled new shocks. This is where my radar activated.
As of last year I am not replacing mechanical parts with Toyota parts. My car just received its 3rd pair of shocks. Brake pads are next. Will be the 3rd set. The drivetrain assembly (coupler $1400 part) will need to be replaced. Toyota changed the manufacturer of their parts... possibly around 2006 and I know this is a source of a lot of their recalls. My last Rav had 157K and was ready to go to the moon and back. Only had brake pads replaced 1x and shocks were never replaced. My 2009 is a full time job even with my knowledge & experience.
My latest is with the suspension recall which I had the fix done in 9/2014. 2/15 I had a car run into the rear of my car. After getting the bodywork done I had the recall fix done again. There is no way to align the rear without having the recall fix done ($600). There is nothing wrong with my car from the accident. However after I had the fix done the right and left are out of toe. Improper tire wear and therefore braking is affected. I have been told that "this is ok". I get alignment readings done on a Hunter Hawkeye machine only. Unfortunately Toyota corporate is not what it used to be. I am so disappointed in a company that I have loved (yes loved) and supported for years. Even with all of my knowledge and experience I am not sure why Toyota has made the decisions they have chosen.

I am having the same issue as "Mary of Simcoe, ON on July 2, 2014" and "Susan of Minneapolis, MN on July 22, 2014". I have a white 2013 Toyota RAV4 and the paint has begun cracking and peeling on the horizontal surface of the driver's side passenger door. A huge spot has begun cracking and peeling in a spot that would never be bumped or banged or hit by rocks. The peeling spots look just like Mary's pictures. My car is 32 months old with 20,800K miles. It should be covered by the 3 yr/36K Basic Warranty against defects in material or workmanship. In addition to the regular warranty, I also purchased the extended warranty from the dealership.
When I called the dealership service department, I spoke a woman who said she had accessed my warranty information and that paint defects were not covered. She had not seen the car to assess the issue, but told me flat out it was not covered. I found my warranty information and saw that ALL defects in material or workmanship are covered under the Basic Warranty for the 1st 3 yrs/36,000 miles (which my car meets) so I called back and spoke to possibly the same woman, although she said she had not spoken to me before. I read the warranty to her and told her this repair should be covered under warranty and asked her how to proceed. She said she would have someone call me. Nobody has called me.
I am calling the dealership tomorrow morning and asking for the service manager. I am going to try to get it in tomorrow for them to review and take pictures if necessary, because a big snow storm is coming the next day and they will probably say it is my fault after the snow storm. I have had good rapport with the service department in the past but it looks like they are going to put up a fight. What a shame. My observation is concerning the mag or alloy wheels that are installed on many new cars at the factory. My direct experience is with the 2009 Toyota RAV4. I've had the RAV since new and it is on its second set of tires (Coopers) and has 52K miles on the odometer. Present set of tires has 18K miles on them with a 60K warranty. They have been mounted for 16 months. Starting at month 9 one wheel started "weeping air" and was repaired by the aftermarket dealer, Pep Boys, at a cost and is presently OK. A second wheel started at 14 months, same repair, same dealer. Now at 16 months a 3rd wheel has started weeping and needs repair. I have been told by several tire dealers this problem is typical and common with all brands of factory installed alloys and caused by oxidation between the tire and rim seal. The Toyota dealership has not offered a recall or replacement.
Each time the tire needs to be removed, the rim sanded and polished, then the tire is "glued" or sealed back in place. None of the repaired wheels have the rim leak come back yet but time will tell. The use of any type of tire seal additive such as "Slime" is not recommended because of the special valve stems monitoring air pressure. One wheel has yet to show this problem and I'm keeping a calendar to see when that happens. I'm not sure if my experience is from buying Cooper Tires or with Pep Boys but with comments from other tire stores and other brands, the common factor is oxidizing rims. No idea how to avoid this so if you purchase a new vehicle with fancy Alloy Rims, get a lifetime warranty on the wheels or buy steel.
Also note that the same design may not be available two or more years after the sale so the warranty should specify that if one wheel is affected, all similar wheels should be replaced with matching rims. Also note that steel rims rust and may not look as cool but the rim seals are far less than alloys. I am not aware of any factory recalls concerning this problem but the manufacturer should be challenged and the alloys be improved.

No amount of shifting and seat adjustment relieve the back pain. I've had pillows, back rests, neck rests, I practically tried everything to make my ride a comfortable one, to no avail. Imagine my shock when I read reviews about people having the same kind of back pain with their 2015 RAV4. Great. I am seriously thinking of changing my car. Purchased a used 2011 vehicle (2 years ago). During the summer months, I noticed increased rusting on the inside of the door frames. By the following year, the driver's door was so bad, it had rusting approximately the length of the rubber pad and the passenger door was doing the same. The back two passengers doors were starting, but nearing the same corrosion. I stopped in at Cambridge and Kitchener Toyota locations, but neither wanted to help. The Cambridge location was aggressive in their behavior and at one point, blamed the problem on the type of paint used.
I took it to a body place, $300.00 later I had fixed the rust issues; then another $200.00 to cover the freshly painted inside door frame with plastic, so that I would not have to deal with it again. When writing to Toyota, the first explanation was "In the case with corrosion, there are many variables that will contribute to the durability. One example would be salty and wet conditions during the winter." When I explained about this happening in the summer months, they referred back to the warranty. I do see a pattern of passing the buck, not no solutions; from any Toyota locations. It is very disappointing to have a 2011 vehicle rust on the inside of the door frame. The auto body place clearly stated that this was design flaw. This is my second Rav4 (2004). However the older version did not have the rubber pad on the door frame. Regardless of all the effort I did on my end, Toyota continues to pass the buck, the solution and cost are all mine.

This is regarding Toyota's Excessive Oil Consumption notice (Bulletin # ZE7). If you received a notice from Toyota and are planning on bringing your vehicle in for the repair, things to be aware of: We have a 2007 RAV4 that has been burning oil for some time, no drips or smoke coming from the tailpipe, just a loss of oil. On 3/21/15, we brought the vehicle to Melody Toyota in San Bruno CA for the test to see if it qualified for excessive oil consumption. At this time they said that we needed to have the oil and filter changed, at our expense, to start the process. Once that was done they marked everything and said to bring the vehicle back within 1100-1300 miles.
Prior to reaching this mileage the engine oil light came on so we brought the vehicle back to Melody Toyota on 5/4/15. At that time, Melody stated that something was wrong with the test and they wanted us to perform the test again. After a frustrating discussion Melody agreed that the car had failed the test and we were to bring that car back to them once the parts become available.
Approximately one month later we brought the car back to Melody to have the work done. We dropped it off on 6/11/15 and they said that it would take approximately one week to do the work, even though the Toyota bulletin states the effort should take two days. Prior to the one week we called Melody and asked about the progress. This is when we started to get answers like, "We don't know when the vehicle will be ready." Then this turned into, "We are waiting on parts to become available."
After multiple discussions with Melody and Toyota Corporate we found out that they are still waiting on parts, standard push pins, and have no idea as to when these push pins will become available. It is almost two months later and we still have not been informed as to when the push pin parts will be available. We cannot get our vehicle back as the original parts are no longer usable. Talk about feeling helpless and at the mercy of Toyota. This is a horrible experience and paints a very bad image for Toyota.

Since I have footed the bill for all this extra oil since 2007, you would think that Toyota would want to make customers happy, but no they insist that we all pay their dealerships extra to perform this supposedly free test.

I bought my Toyota RAV4 new in 1997. It has 56,900 miles. Over the years, it has had normal repairs. However, over the past 5 years, I have had a problem with the ignition fuse burning out. I drive the car fine to my destination, and when I try to start it again, nothing. I carry a supply of new #10 fuses, a flashlight and screwdriver to replace fuses. I have taken my car to the dealership several times to repair the problem and after $$$, it still has the same problem. It is unsafe to drive, especially at night on dark roads or parking lots. I'm stuck at home in the evening because of a poorly made car. After reading the complaints of other drivers, it is apparent that Toyota is still making poor vehicles. I am looking to replace this one and it will not be a Toyota.

I have a 2014 RAV4 Limited with 10,000 KM. I have noticed 2 setbacks with this model so far. The available heat from my knees to my feet is insufficient in cold weather. I owned a Corolla and a Solara and the heating worked fine on both. However I always feel a cool draft from my knees downwards in my RAV4. Regardless of how I set the controls or closed upper louvers to maximize the blowing power below. It feels like cold air makes its way through the door speaker and under the steering column. The second disappointment is that it is difficult to make out the door and dashboard controls on the left side at night. A small thing but quite annoying.

My 2008 RAV 4 is like a lot of others it seems. Proper maintenance is not an issue. It has 129,000 miles on it but has been using oil since 90K. Now it is 1 quart every 900 miles. The dealer wants to do $4000 worth of work to change the rings and pistons. I can see this is a problem with this type of engine but there is no concession to help from Toyota. I have purchased 6 Toyotas and currently have 3. This is the only one that has had poor reliability. It makes me rethink future purchases.

Never again. 2007 Rav4 has been on oil consumption watch for 2 year. Their excuse - either I drove over 1000 miles or it's not quite 1.2 quarts low. Such crap. I have a 1966 car and the only time it needs oil is if I change it. Step up to the plate Toyota. Buy American or buy Honda - never had a problem with either one. It has used a set of batteries about every 6 to 8 months. I contacted Toyota & they said since it is out of warranty it is my responsibility to replace it at a tune of about $600! I realize that the car is 5 years old, purchased new in July 2009. I was told that after 3 years there was nothing they could do. I asked that are they telling me that trade in your car after 3 years. I told them that I would never buy another Toyota & would tell others how they treat customers. I guess that only customers that purchase a car every 3 or 4 years are the only ones they care about.

I have had several issues with my 2008 RAV 4. The gas gauge quit at around 70,000 miles. I took the car in to see why the gas gauge was broke. They told me the car could not leave the shop as it was unsafe to drive. The rear end had broke. They said we were lucky the car had not flipped on the highway. (We were on a out of town trip) I had to rent a car and stay in town for 2 days until they could repair it. I got a recall notice several months later to come back in as the first fix did not repair the rear end issues. I had to put it in the shop again.
I have since put 2 batteries in the vehicle. It will sporadically go through 4 quarts of oil. I have to check the oil every time I get gas so it don't burn up the engine. now the transmission has failed. I paid $2000 today to get it fixed. While driving the steering felt funny and going down the highway at 65 mph the abs came on and the car almost flipped. I had my small children in the car! Back to another shop on Monday! I will never buy a Toyota product as long as I live. My family also drove Toyotas. They will not buy another Toyota either after seeing the issues with this vehicle!

Happily the issue was fixed under warranty however, the effort is took is unbelievable. We bought our 4 cylinder Rav4 new in spring 2008 and always had it serviced at the dealership. At 52,527 km I complained the car was using too much oil but the dealership told me it was considered normal. At 58,481 km mentioned the oil issue again and was told it was normal. This scenario continued until the odometer was approximately at 82,000 km. Throughout this time I was asked on several occasions to bring the car back for oil readings at every 1000 km or then every 2000 km to track the oil consumption.
At just over 82,000 km the oil light went on; I checked the oil and was horrified the oil was pretty much empty. I added 1 liter of oil and took the car straight to the dealership. When I spoke to the dealership I was told the oil was down by 2 liters; so when the oil light finally came on there was only 1 liter of oil in the engine. Finally at almost 83,000 km, the dealer fixed the oil issue, apparently the short block was the issue. I got the car back only to discover it hesitated and almost stalled on me regularly, an issue I did not have prior the oil fix. Took the car to a different dealer and at cost to me they fixed the stalling issue.
The previous dealer did not clean the engine parts properly before putting it together and crud was causing the stalling. The car runs fine now. On a side note, the dealer to whom I had taken the car since purchase, never mentioned to me that several interior lights were not working the entire time they were servicing the car. Apparently there are lights for the shifter. When I pointed out the lights never worked and I had no idea that there were lights on the shifter I was told that they are not responsible to tell me about issues for warranty I was responsible to tell them about the issues. For a special price of $250.00 they would be happy to fix the burned out interior lights that never worked.
While the car did eventually get fixed I feel the dealer very reluctantly fixed the issue and had I not persisted would not have fixed the car. One should not have to go to so much effort to collect on a warranty when there is clearly an issue. I like the Rav4 otherwise but I doubt I will ever buy another Toyota given that the service departments in Vancouver generally seem untrustworthy and Toyota does not stand behind their product.

2007 RAV4 Passenger side visor started to fall but pushed back and stayed a while at 30K miles. Not a big deal since I was the driver. Now at 70K miles, both visors fall down and will not stay up. Highlanders, Tundras, Camrys and Rav4 owners are complaining, but to deaf ears. I personally think this is a design flaw and a serious safety hazard.
My Dealership, Universal Toyota, San Antonio, states it's Toyota's issue, not theirs. Called Toyota 800-331-4331 and was basically told it was my problem and not considered a safety issue. I asked Lisa, "If it's a safety hazard, why doesn't Toyota respond to fix it? Why would they wait for the Government to get in their business?" Lisa said that if, NHTSA did not issue a recall, then, it isn't a hazard! Apparently, Toyota, like GM, will wait for 18 deaths or 2000 crashes before it will take any initiative!
My view is that this is a safety issue, and we should not wait for an accident or someone getting killed or injured. Toyota is dragging their feet and is showing their true colors, by ignoring this issue that has been around for years. Everyone should file a complaint with the National Highway Transportation Safety Agency and let them know, this is no difference than a wheel falling off. It's a safety issue, poor design, and Toyota needs to take action. It is everyone's responsibility to take action for all. Even replacements are not fixing this safety issue. Some folks have replaced the visors two and three times.
Lesson learned: Take a stand and tell Toyota to take responsibility! File your complaint so Toyota can hear you loud and clear! My 57 Chevy Visor has a better design, and Toyota hasn't fixed it in over 12 years! We should not be fixing Toyota's design flaw. We should be standing up for everyone and get them to do the right thing!

Recall Failure for Toyota Rav 4 - At the end July our rear suspension assembly came apart as I was driving. Toyota had put a temporary fix (part of a recall) but the temporary fix failed. We had received another recall notice for a permanent fix, but after calling every week for two months the part had never come into the dealership. We were lucky when the clamp broke that Nobody was killed or hurt (I was only going 20 miles/hour). Toyota inspected the car two weeks ago (It took 4 weeks for them to come out and inspect the car). Still no answer. Toyota told me I cannot talk to their legal department (they do not accept phone calls).
Since this has happened I have incurred towing expenses, storage expenses, rental expenses. I just paid the rental bill of $1,300.00. Because of their defective part. I have drained my savings. I have no money for groceries this week. This is the only car we have and I am handicapped. I have written to Toyota several times. They are supposed to respond in 24 hours, but I have yet to get a response. I now have to give up the rental car and have no way to get to work. I feel hopeless and helpless and frustrated that they don't care. When I talked to the "case manager" two weeks ago he said “When no one is hurt things move slowly.” I am little dumbfounded by that statement.
