Kia Soul extended warranty coverage
An extended auto warranty is an optional warranty you can get to lengthen your Kia Soul’s factory warranty. For context, all new Kias come with the following factory warranties:
- A 5-year/60,000-mile limited bumper-to-bumper warranty
- A 10-year/100,000-mile limited powertrain warranty
- A 5-year/60,000-mile limited anti-perforation warranty
- 5-year/60,000-mile roadside assistance
Generally, factory warranties follow the vehicle, not the owner. So, if you buy a four-year-old Kia Soul with 20,000 miles on it, you’ll still have one year or 40,000 miles worth of your factory bumper-to-bumper warranty.
It’s important to note that the 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty only applies to the first owner. If the car is resold, the subsequent owner can still benefit from the 5-year/60,000-mile limited bumper-to-bumper warranty, but they miss out on the additional five years or 40,000 miles of powertrain coverage.
Also, some extended auto warranties start from the original owner's purchase date of the vehicle. So, since the factory warranty lasts for five years and 60,000 miles, a 6-year/100,000-mile extended warranty plan may only provide an additional year or 40,000 additional miles of coverage.
Coverage options
For an extended warranty on your Kia Soul, you’ll have two options:
Kia extended warranty plan
Kia offers extended coverage in the form of vehicle service contracts (VSCs). The Kia Distinction Vehicle Service Contract is Kia’s official extended warranty plan. Administered by Fidelity Warranty Services, the Kia-backed VSC begins on an eligible vehicle’s purchase date and lasts up to 150,000 miles.
Kia offers three VSC coverage tiers:
- Powertrain covers the engine, transmission and drive axle.
- Gold adds coverage for brakes, air conditioning, front and rear suspension, cooling and air conditioning systems, and alternative fuel systems.
- Platinum is the most comprehensive plan, providing exclusionary coverage of most components and systems.
Kia VSCs are available through Kia dealerships, but not all dealerships offer them. Unlike some carmakers, which require you to take your vehicle to a dealership for service if you have an official VSC, Kia allows you to use any licensed repair shop.
Third-party extended warranty plan
Alternatively, you can buy a plan from a third-party extended warranty company. These companies typically offer a wide range of plan types, and you can generally take your vehicle to any mechanic that has Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification.
What’s covered and not covered
Auto warranties only pay for repairs and replacements of parts that are specifically covered and fail from normal wear and tear. They don't cover damage from accidents, aftermarket modifications or improper maintenance.
If you choose a bumper-to-bumper plan that offers comprehensive and exclusionary protection, you’ll generally get more value from it since these plans cover almost all the parts on your vehicle. Less comprehensive plans, like powertrain plans, may be cheaper, but they also cover fewer parts per dollar.
Typically, here’s what a bumper-to-bumper warranty and a powertrain warranty cover:

Is a Kia Soul extended warranty worth it?
Getting a Kia Soul extended warranty can be worth it if any of the following are true:
- The warranty costs less than expected repair costs
- Your vehicle is not known for its reliability
- A big repair bill could hurt you financially
Reliability
As a brand, Kia has above-average dependability, according to J.D. Power. It ranked ninth out of 28 car brands in the J.D. Power 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study, earning a score of 193 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100), which is better than the study average of 204 PP100.
As for the Kia Soul specifically, RepairPal rated it 4.5 out of 5 stars for reliability, which is an “excellent” rating. RepairPal found that the Kia Soul tends to have lower repair costs than other vehicles, and it also tends to have less frequent and severe issues.
While the cost of Kia maintenance is below average and the car is generally seen as reliable, it may be worth getting an extended warranty if you can get a good deal on a warranty and if you’d rather have peace of mind against unexpected repairs.
Customer reviews
Many ConsumerAffairs reviewers reported issues with their Kia Souls, showing that getting an extended warranty could prove valuable to save against costly and unexpected repairs.
Ruth, a reviewer in Texas, had an issue with the fuel pump. “I bought my 2019 Soul new,” Ruth said. “When it had 46,000 miles on it[, ] the fuel pump quit working.”
Engine issues also appear to be common, as Brian, a reviewer from Arizona, experienced firsthand. “Second owner of a 2019 KIA Soul. All required oil changes and maintenance done, no evidence of neglect. At 93,200 miles it experienced a catastrophic engine failure with loud grinding noises, with no prior warning,” Brian said.
Jonathan, a reviewer in Florida, reported nonstop issues. “Since early on, this vehicle has had ongoing safety-related problems, including stalling at red lights and during normal driving. This creates a dangerous situation not only for me but for others on the road,” Jonathan said. “In addition, the vehicle has had multiple defects such as A/C malfunction, horn failure, and loose components under the hood.”
