Why an extended warranty could make sense
+2 more

Honda Civics are known for their reliability, but an extended warranty can still be a smart investment if you plan to keep the car beyond the factory coverage period. It adds peace of mind and financial protection against unexpected repair bills.
This guide explains what the Honda Civic warranty includes, the cost of a plan, your best third-party extended car warranty options and how to determine if it's worth it.
All new Honda Civics come with a three-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty and a five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty from the factory.
Jump to insightThird-party quotes we received for an extended auto warranty on a 2021 Ridgeline ranged from $1,028.16 to $1,072.23 a year. That’s less expensive than the average cost of an extended warranty.
Jump to insightAn extended warranty, like Honda Care, offers additional coverage beyond the factory warranty, potentially covering repairs for mechanical breakdowns and providing roadside assistance.

All new Honda Civics come with two factory warranties: a three-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty and a five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty. Beyond this, you can purchase an extended warranty:
- Honda Care: Offered by American Honda Finance Corporation, this plan is available through authorized dealerships. Honda Care plans can last up to eight years or 120,000 miles and may include benefits such as:
- Mechanical breakdown coverage
- Roadside assistance
- Rental car reimbursement
- Trip interruption protection
- Third-party providers: Companies like Endurance, CARCHEX and CarShield offer extended warranties for Honda Civics. These plans can offer similar benefits, plus let you take your car to any ASE-certified mechanic for repairs.
Honda Civic extended warranty coverage
Car warranties only cover factory defects. If a part fails because of manufacturing issues, it should be covered. Most car warranties (factory or extended) don’t cover repairs needed due to damage, abuse, misuse or neglect.
Honda Care plans are “exclusionary,” meaning they cover virtually every component of your vehicle unless it's specifically listed as an exclusion. This is generally more comprehensive than "inclusionary" plans that only list what is covered.
Covered
- Engine, transmission, drivetrain components
- Steering, suspension, brakes (excluding wear items)
- Electrical systems, air conditioning/heating
- Seals, gaskets
- and more
Not covered
- Regular maintenance
- Wear-and-tear items (brake pads, spark plugs, fluids)
- Damage from misuse, neglect, or modification
How much does a Honda Civic extended warranty cost?
We were quoted $1,072.23 a year from olive for three years of bumper-to-bumper coverage for a 2021 Honda Civic registered in Austin, Texas, with 40,000 miles. From Endurance, the quote for similar coverage was $1,028.16 annually for 30 months of coverage for the same vehicle with the same mileage. Both quotes assumed a $100 deductible. A powertrain warranty will typically be much cheaper, but provide less coverage.
Get quotes from multiple providers, including your local Honda dealer, to compare coverage and cost.
For context, the average cost of an extended warranty is around $1,000 per year of coverage. The quotes we collected for our hypothetical 2021 Honda Civic were more expensive by comparison. The “official” Honda extended warranty is called Honda Care, and it may cost less than a third-party option.
In general, quotes for extended auto warranties vary based on coverage, vehicle, deductible, location and other factors. A 2022 Civic with zero miles typically has cheaper extended warranty options than a 2020 model with 50,000 miles, for example.
Is an extended warranty worth it for a Honda Civic?
Extending the warranty on a Honda Civic is generally worth it if any of the following are true:
- Your vehicle has a bad reputation for reliability.
- The warranty costs less than you expect to spend on repairs.
- A big repair bill could hurt you financially.
- You don’t mind paying for peace of mind.
Honda maintenance is fairly inexpensive, but so are the quotes we received for an extended warranty. Ultimately, if you’d like the peace of mind that a protection plan affords you against expensive repairs, it might be worthwhile to get an extended warranty.
Honda Civic maintenance tips
Civics have been seen as incredibly reliable cars for the decades they have been in production. But you do need to keep up on timing belt maintenance intervals to avoid engine issues. Also, Civics from 2004 to 2011 have some powertrain and minor electrical issues, making an extended warranty especially worthwhile for these model years.

Honda Care vs. third-party warranties
The Honda Care coverage for covered components generally kicks in once the original factory warranty expires. However, some benefits like Roadside Assistance might start immediately upon purchase of the Honda Care plan.
Unlike third-party extended warranty companies, Honda Care is directly from the manufacturer, meaning the repairs are typically processed and performed with Honda's standards and genuine parts.

Where can I buy a Honda Civic extended warranty?
Honda Care extended warranties can be purchased through any authorized Honda dealership. It’s not necessary to buy from the dealership where you purchased your vehicle. Additionally, some dealerships offer online purchasing options, allowing you to shop around for the best pricing.
Are Honda Civic extended warranties transferable?
Yes, Honda Care extended warranties are transferable to a new owner in a private party sale. To transfer the warranty, you must submit a request within 20 days of the vehicle's sale and provide necessary documentation, such as the bill of sale or title and a completed transfer form signed by both parties.
Can I cancel my Honda Civic extended warranty?
Yes, you can cancel your Honda Care extended warranty at any time. If you cancel within 60 days of purchase and no claims have been made, you are eligible for a full refund. After 60 days, you can still cancel and receive a prorated refund based on the unused portion of the contract, minus any claims paid and applicable processing fees.
Bottom line
Auto warranties only pay for repairs and replacements of specifically covered parts that fail from normal wear and tear, not from damage or accidents. Repairs generally aren’t covered under warranty if you don’t properly maintain the vehicle or you make aftermarket modifications.
You’ll get the most value by purchasing the plan that offers comprehensive, exclusionary protection (often referred to as bumper-to-bumper or Platinum). These plans cover 90% or more of the parts on your vehicle. Less comprehensive Gold, Silver and powertrain plans may be cheaper, but they tend to cover fewer parts per dollar.
