If you are buying a used car, this is the gold standard to check fair pricing. Dealers use it and if you don't use it they will charge you a higher price than even they will take if you don't know that price. This is a great place to look for your next vehicle and gain the knowledge to not get taken advantage of.

Didn’t feel the website was easy to use. You have to watch the prices versus the mileage. The mileage on some of the vehicles are really high and they are still asking a high price. I would rather see touch and drive before I made a purchase so you actually know what you are purchasing.

Auto Trader is a good local bible, when looking for either a new car, or used car or caravan, boat etc, and also has a good selection of accessory, from servicing, tyre offers and or a selection of insurers from whom to obtain quotes. Particularly good online, simply decide what make, model you are looking for and the price range which fits you, and you can be sure of a selection on offer in the vicinity you wish to include. Personally, when looking for any of the commodities listed above, it would be my first cholce of browsing, in that it saves trawling local newspaper ads. Autotrader has everything listed, for the motorist.

Autotrader may be great for dealers but terrible for private sellers. My ad never appeared at the top and I received no legitimate contacts. The first week I received 3 texts and two emails but the texts were clearly scams to get me to subscribe to some random VIN service to validate instead of carfax. The emails were classic scams to deliver a car and receive payment through PayPal. It seemed that it was always a person stationed somewhere random with limited communication abilities who was buying a 29k car for a relative. After the first week of scam contacts I received nothing else. I ended up selling the car through Craigslist. After a week I had a valid offer. Much cheaper and legitimate local offers. Feb 22, 2020, I purchased a 2011 Ford F-150 4x4 3.5l ecoboost from our salesman Blake **. We arrived to find out that it wasn’t the truck in the Facebook ad. It was similar, but had different features and drivetrain. Test drove and liked the truck anyway. It had a rattle while test driving, salesman assured me it was something in the glove box and there was stuff in there so I went along with it.
Got to the finance office and while going through that process, I was offered an extended warranty that was $70/month & $200/deductible. I declined. (I declined due to the amount of cost it was adding and the dealership and salesman were recommended by family, so I didn’t feel like they were hiding anything). Finance officer Truman insisted that I get the protection due to “Turbos can go out at any time”. He mentioned the turbos more than once. I declined and was happy with my purchase.
I returned home and left it parked while I drove and sold my other truck. It was parked Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Went to start it and drive it Thursday morning, it made a very loud rattling noise upon starting it. I reached out to Blake to inform him that it sounded like it was coming apart and started the process to bring it in and get a temp vehicle while they inspected mine.
Sonny in the Service department contacted me the following Monday to tell me that it was reported when they took the vehicle in on trade that the turbos were making noise and the sales department did not want to fix it. That was the noise I heard and they recommend replacing both turbos. After a week of going back and forth with Blake and service to figure out what was going to be done about the truck. Used Car manager Jeremy reaches out to me to discuss the issue and then said he needed to get up to speed.
Jeremy calls me today, several days later, to tell me they’re not going to repair it because it is not worth them doing. He gave me the option of dealing with the service department myself or he can try to sell me another truck. He also stated that he has not spoke to anyone in service to see what the actual problem is, just said that it’s not worth fixing to HIM. Now 17 days later I am without the truck I purchased and facing thousands of dollars to repair the issue that the Nissan dealership was aware of prior to my purchase. They were deceitful and lacking the integrity to rectify the situation. It’s very disappointing when you put your trust in someone only to be lied to.

I have placed an ad with Autotrader.com for several months now - and I have received very few responses. That's life. I get it. However, I got suspicious that the company was scamming me soon after my ad ran. I got a couple email inquiries. I responded and no response back - again no problem. That's life. Then I simply asked each person to respond back that they got my email and even stated I think Autotrader is doing something fishy - NO REPLY ever... It has been a number of responses that I have asked this question to.
In one instance, I responded 2-3 times with a prospective buyer. We were setting up a time for that person to come and look at my car - then I sent a note with some availability and also asked to reply even if not interested so I could validate authenticity. NOTHING replied. So either Autotrader is scamming people and sending fake email to make them think their ad is working and getting viewed or they are not screening emails as they state in their service agreement. Either way DO NOT use this site to sell you car. There are so many better options.

I attempted to place an ad to sell my truck on Autotrader on a Monday. I paid $90 for their premium service (Ha!). By Wednesday, the ad hadn’t appeared and I became concerned, partly because they were quick to “cash” my payment. I wrote an email to their customer service area and received a reply apologizing for their error and promising to resolve the problem within “24-48 hours“ (Now THAT’S great customer service-NOT!). So I waited 48 hours...still no sign of my ad. So I wrote back to Autotrader, and received a reply instructing me to call their customer service department, which I did.
A very nice lady did some searching, and more searching, and more searching...and finally offered to begin the whole lengthy process of replacing the ad from scratch. It took me at least a half hour to compose the original ad, take pictures, etc., so I refused and asked for a refund. I was told it would take 3-5 business days for them to process the refund (funny, it only took one day for them to process my payment ). What an absolutely terrible customer experience.

So I began to look for the last car made in that color, which would have been a 2017 left-over. But the price for the car used, was barely $2,000 less than buying new! I listed a relatively new vehicle in great shape way below its blue book value for just over two months and these were literally the only kinds of "buyers" I heard from. "Nice product you've got there, fellas."
Also, if you are looking to sell your vehicle outright, i.e. not trade it in to purchase/lease from a dealer, don't waste your time with the Kelley Blue Book "instant cash offer". You get a bunch of emails from local dealer "partners" who say they need inventory and want to buy your vehicle, but the minute you tell them you won't be purchasing a new one from them, you never hear from them again. OVERVALUATION. They value your car high, you don't sell, they make additional advertising revenue when you upgrade. MISLEADING PRICE SIGNALS. 80% plus of their revenue comes from traders so they structure products for them. So for example the good price/great price comparison icon is only offered to traders. if you know your behavioural science that means traders can pay for priming. your car may be better value than trade equivalent, but thats tough. Interestingly Autotrader say there is no evidence to suggest the pricing signal negatively impacts private sellers. So question is inevitably why offer it? Clearly they recognise someone is losing out, traders paying for a service that doesn't work or private sellers not getting the impact they think they have paid for.
EXPENSIVE. They use price architecture to encourage you to buy more expensive products. E.g. Two weeks for £40 or 6 weeks for £70. Our primitive brains say bargain. Well using them for 3 months we gained 2-3 leads over 90 days with 25-30 vehicles in inventory and I believe 2-3 phone calls max. For the price you spend this program and company is beyond worthless. Your sales rep will not call you or check in to see what they can do better. They do not respond to emails. If you don't pay for the highest package your cars will not be seen as I had one step under their max package which mixes cars around to bump them up. Regardless, I forked out about 2000 with being threatened to be put into collections to square up with them. Fast to collect the money. Slow to help you boost your sales. Pathetic. Do not use them to advertise.

Listed Car For Sale - Autotrader is a scam site. This was the second time I paid for a featured ad on the site. They send you a couple of fake inquiries, about 5 days before the ad is set to expire. The fake "buyers" will ask questions about the vehicle and make an offer slightly below the asking, or they ask to call back to schedule a time to see the car. Each time, they don't call back. One such "buyer" went as far as to let me think he had flown to my city just to see the car. He totally went quiet the day we were supposed to meet. This is a typical pattern that is designed by Autotrader to make the ad buyer believe that the ad is generating some eyeballs, which then motivates you to renew. Seriously, this is business malpractice and a scam.

Back in July 2017 I paid Autotrader.com a fee to post my car for sale and in spite of the car being competitively priced, unfortunately the ad did not receive much traction. In Feb 2018 I contacted Autotrader via email to retrieve my login so I could lower the price as I had established more equity. When Autotrader sent me a follow-up customer service survey via email asking me to rate my experience, I provided the highest marks across the board with the exception: “Would you recommend Autotrader to friends and family?” I answered “no” “that in spite of my car being competitively priced, it has been crickets since July and I expected more by the way of optimization”.
Several days after I submitted my survey I received a random (rogue) message via text: “Interested in your car for sale” to which I promptly replied with a few qualification questions and I received no response. Call it intuition, but I had a strange feeling about the text so I ran a reverse look-up and found the wireless number to be owned by a woman a few cities away but I did not stop there...
I ran a search on LinkedIn and found that she was Head of Sales at Autotrader for another country. I perceived the text was sent to placate me, as a result of my survey response, disguised as a lead to restore my confidence. After all, survey results are audited by sales so to confirm my suspicion and rule out coincidence, I sent a follow-up message to her: “Do you work for Autotrader”? She replied “yes I do” (and then radio silence).
I am not insinuating the company is aware of these lead management practices, but IF she had been inquiring about my car on behalf of herself or someone else, at minimum she needed to disclose her affiliation with Autotrader and not frame the language like a genuine lead. I have lost faith in the Autotrader online platform. But I do hope this is an isolated incident and other folks who use the service are not receiving similar texts from Autotrader sales managers.

Their pricing scale was real high as I don't carry much inventory. I was specific that I wanted to look at the dealer's portal but I stated to not activate it for the public just yet as I am just starting out. Well, Omar activated the account "and" took 2 vehicles from my website to populate the Autotrader site. Both of which I did NOT authorize. After multiple requests (emails and voicemails, etc) to deactivate, they kept it active to generate fees. I have left a voicemail with his Manager Audie ** and have yet to receive a call back. If I could give Autotrader negative stars, I would. They are deceiving and crooks. You need to BEWARE of the new Autotrader and believe all the negative feedback this company is getting.

I had used Autotrader many years ago when they published a magazine and distributed it locally and always had good experience. Not so today as it took me three different attempts to post an ad. First time after I entered all info including description and photos then went to the pay part the link was dead. I phoned them and was told to go to various other sections which I did and as a result lost all my input. They said they were sorry and would help me word another ad. I do not need help with that, just being able to place it.
Next attempt I started over from scratch but only got as far as entering my email address which I had to re-enter online below only to get error message that emails do not match, despite the fact that they matched perfectly. I tried again but used a different email, but had the same results. Called Autotrader and all they could advise was try again from scratch. I did so and this time it worked and I spent another hour downloading photos and rewording description, but it took my credit card and gave me an ad id. Lucky me! Now all I have to do is wait for 24 hours before I can see my ad published.

I reported all of these to Autotrader. Since listing, I have not received even one legitimate inquiry - not one. It was like paying someone to harass you. Now I still have a car to sell and will probably need to pay another service to do so. This is not the first car I have sold online. Autotrader is the worst service I have ever used to date.

First of all the site is terrible. Just to get to your ad, you have to sign in numerous times. I started the ad, then went to finish the following evening. The ad was gone and I had to start again. Now when I want to check the status of my ad, it is difficult to find the link, you then have to sign in again. Your ad page tells you nothing, how many have viewed it, absolutely nothing. Now to get to the responses from my ad. I immediately received 3 text messages, all from the same # with several other #'s included in a group text. I was asked if the vehicle was still for sale and to respond via email. I did to the first one, then realized all three text were from the same person. I even received a text from one of the #s included in the group text telling me that they believed it to be a scam. Sometime later I received a call from a service wanting to "help" me sell my car... for $299! Now mind you I have already paid to place an ad on AT.
I received about 8 more inquiries within the next 8 hours, emails from soldiers wanting to buy a gift for their family member, "can't talk, in a combat zone", "must make purchase immediately", etc. etc. In 2 days I have received 28 inquiries, all have been scams. I reached out to AT, they were sincerely sorry, (I believed them) but they cannot be held responsible, these things happen, yada yada. They gave me a pretty comprehensive list of things I should do to make sure I am not scammed... When I responded and asked what THEY will do to protect their customers... so far radio silence! No mention of a refund, upgrade in ad placement (ads are anywhere between 25-100), any type of customer service responsibility.
I am guessing that I purchased the scammers ad list, i.e. $25. There are way too many free sites that I have used and NEVER had this problem before! I used AutoTrader because my son has a "specialty" car and thought I would reach a different audience... Boy was I right! I definitely would not recommend this site unless you are hypervigilant and watch for scammers, since that is all I have received, it may be best to avoid this site altogether unless you purchase the "no scammers" list. Kelley Blue Book Instant Offers are not too reliable. In fact we had received an instant offer for our 2013 Rav4 XLE in great condition. Once we took the vehicle to dealers. All of them tried to use different techniques to "discount" the so called "Instant Offer". One dealer claimed there was hail damage to the top of the car... there in fact was a few dings that we never noticed and an average consumer would never had seen either. Another dealer pulled the CarFax report and revealed to us that the car at some point, prior to us owning it was engaged in an apparent accident (which never affected the performance and had been repaired quite possibly by Toyota) and never noticeable.
It was apparent to us that this scheme was an effort by the dealers to discount the value of the vehicle and give us the impression that the vehicle was worth less... interestingly the vehicle is a hot seller and it has less than 36K miles. Word to the wise is... don't buy into this nonsense because the effort apparently is geared to get the consumer into the dealers' office primarily to trade your vehicle. If they can con you into believing that your vehicle is faulty... they can do a "steal deal"; i.e. use a scheme to buy it from you at a low-ball price.

Whoever ruined the Obamacare website must be the same person who made AutoTrader.com. I purchased the premium $100 listing for the duration of 18+ months or however long it takes to sell the car. Within a few months I had well over 30 people communicate with me regarding my simultaneous Craigslist ad. On the other hand my AutoTrader ad had maybe 5-7 replies the entire year it was listed. Not to mention 3 or 4 of those replies regarded people telling me the AutoTrader ad wouldn't work properly, either not loading images or them being unable to open the listing.
Those vague analytics a purely to give you an idea where your money is best spent. Keep in mind, I was upgraded for free to the VIP listing for a month or two, since I had complained about their website so many times. I'll give customer service a B for effort, as I do appreciate free goods, but it doesn't mean much when they never made an effort to fix their useless website. Countless time I was told, "We are working on the website". Well the website changed in format, but it still has ALL of the same issues. I couldn't change my ad, I couldn't update or delete anything without asking customer service to do it for me... and wait for it... it still takes 24-48 hours to update to the website! That's provided the changes made actually reflect what you asked for, without typos. Otherwise, looks like I'm making another call to customer service and waiting 48 hours to see if I hit the lottery and they updated it properly.
During my 8 or so months with AutoTrader I eventually gave up on the ad I paid for. It was ludicrous to call in or send emails to customer support to make ANY changes to my listing. Not only that, but I would often find the images only loaded half-way and customer support wouldn't bother to tell me. Typically I would hear from a potential customer that the images don't load or the website doesn't work for them when clicking on my ad. AutoTrader never took ownership of the problem, they would blame my photos, which coincidentally uploaded perfectly fine when sending them the same exact pictures a 2nd time. Their website is very unstable and useless regardless which browser you use, granted I never tried Opera or Safari browsers. It did not work in IE 11, Chrome, or Firefox. All of them had issues uploading images or changing the text in my listing.
8 or so months of dealing with this I asked for some sort of refund today and they declined. Well I shall not decline on reminding people how upsetting it was to use their service, NEVER AGAIN. The dealership had no issue with the condition of the vehicle (2013 Buick Enclave that was fully loaded) but they did have an issue with the $27,200 offer that KBB/Autotrader made. They couldn't even get close in our market. Their offer was $25,800. It was a total waste of my time and their time. This program that KBB has developed has serious flaws that need to be fixed.

Really. Thanks captain obvious. Well 4 weeks later had 0 additional offers from Autotrader. I did not upgrade thankfully, and had 7 offers from the completely insane half of NADA guide value to an offer that was only $300 less than I asked for.
Mind you I priced my car below the next closest same vehicle in 100 miles, $1000 less, but I was the original owner with all receipts. I paid for VIP just in case my ad didn't sell. I was suppose to get a money back guarantee. Not only did I have to take all my own pictures and tell the representative what to write. I listed my car 2k below Blue Book Value. In over 6 months I got one in person and a handful of people offering 2k lower than a Carmax instant sell offer. So, I finally decided to remove my ad and try to get my money back because, "Hey I paid 200+ extra for it," and they inform me that they no longer offer it. After arguing for ~30 minutes they said, "We will give you 100 back then to 189." So the bottom line is I paid 100 for someone to write what I told them and post pictures (something that I could have done in 5 minutes on Craigslist). Do yourself a favor and stay away from this company. Complete waste of time, money, and effort. I will never ever ever think about buying or selling a car affiliated with AutoTrader.com. I submitted my information for their online sale process on my 2007 Jaguar including its VIN number rating the car in average condition. It generated a number that was substantially higher than CarMax by about 25+%. They gave me 3 car dealers in the greater Chicagoland area and I went to one. First of all, that dealer was not prepared to buy the car. They brought in an independent buyer who evaluated the car because this dealer did not buy/sell specialty cars. Second, it was really not a cash offer despite the fact that nothing on what I printed indicated otherwise. It was subject to the information I submitted being validated.
This car had 27, 500 miles, only one small blemish on the outside, and I had rated the car in average condition (2nd lowest rating). I had also disclosed it had been involved in a small accident in 2009. They offered my about 10% less than CarMax. This is nothing more than a lead generation. They told me I did not have the original wheels, which was laughable. If you still decide to do this, ask them to review the information that was submitted via AutoTrader. Ask them what % of cars submitted to them that they buy and at what discount. If they can't answer these questions, save yourself time and energy.

Please people do not waste your time with Autotrader's instant cash offer process (or AIC as I will call it). Total scam to get you into a dealership. I have a 2010 Chevy, 90k miles with minor dings and a star on the window. I am realistic with the condition of my vehicle and submitted as much detail as possible. I'm not opposed to the dealer finding a discrepancy and offering a lower price than the offer. But it is not a no haggle process and should not be sold to you as such. The KBB value of my vehicle in fair condition is 8-9k, the average going rate in my area for the same vehicle/same miles is 10-15k in my area. So the AIC over of 8900 for my vehicle seemed on target.
I'm not unreasonable and understand the dealer is entitled to a profit and will have to invest some money to make my vehicle ready for sale. What is not reasonable or on target though is the offers I received from 2 of their VIP buying centers (what is the purpose of having VIP buying centers?). The first one a Chrysler Dealer sent me a email that they wanted me to come in and were "highly interested" in my vehicle (yes the FCA dealer said they wanted a GM product) and the AIC that I received was the minimum I could expect from the dealership, ok this thing may work after all so I drove it in.
The dealer rep goes out, drives it around back, says there is "no way" they can meet that offer and offered me $1900 less citing the windshield and the big fact they would have to take the vehicle to auction. This is just pure lies, they don't take other trade in vehicles to auction. What about the email? A replacement windshield cost less than $400, which in Michigan good luck having a car window that doesn't at least get one ding. I walked away from that insult.
The Next VIP dealer a GM dealer offered me $2200 less citing "engine bolts", engine bolts? really? there is nothing in the AIC form that I filled out that says I need to claim engine bolts! I googled engine bolts. I can't find anything about issues with engine bolts. They didn't even mention the window, so what the heck is going on? One dealer offers less because of auction/window issues, the other claims there are issues with the engine bolts. This means there is no true offer and its all dealer garbage, they are not interested in buying your car unless they can get fatter selling you another one.
Do not waste your time with Autotrader and this process. I didn't read these reviews and now have added more miles to my car and wasted my time with two dealerships who I will never ever do business with again. If you decide I'm crazy, knock at least two grand off any quote that Autotrader gives you because the dealer sure will.

Our Q5 recently encountered a problem, with the front driver side/passenger side headlights cracking, which resulted in condensation build up in the housing. The warranty for our car states that it covers 80,000 KM, or 4 yrs which until August 2015, whichever comes first. Our car only has a mileage of 46,000 so we were covered under the warranty period. Brought the car into the dealership, in which we were told that even though we were under the warranty timeframe, they could not fix this major problem due to "outside influences".
Instead of them taking the initiative to contact Audi Canada for help, they put that responsibility on us, the customers instead. After months of debating and calling, they finally agreed to fix our passenger side headlight. In the midst of fixing, they found out our driver side had the same problem developing, but once again refused to fix that, up to this day. This is completely ridiculous, as they should have helped us fix this huge issue without any hesitation. Furthermore, the service that we received from ** , ** and ** from AUDI CANADA were mediocre at best, and was rude all around, making our visit and experience here very unenjoyable. The rest were just looking to see how low I would go on price. So I decided to quit checking the site since my package included weekly updates to my email and a rep calling me if anyone had called about the car. Fast forward 4 months, ad now up for 6 months time. Total of maybe 5 legitimate inquiries. Irritated, I remember the guaranteed sale or refund. Inquire about it to find out that you have to request it between 120-141 days after your car has been up for sale. Miss that window and tough luck.
Oh, and did I mention that you have to snail mail the request in. So in all actuality, you have maybe a week to request a refund. Not cool at all. Not to mention I was never informed that I had a "window", I was under the impression that after 120 consecutive days of the ad being up, if it hadn't sold, I could get a refund. Not unlike another reviewer, I was incredulous that AutoTrader mandates a written letter, conforming to their specific requirements and timeline, in order to theoretically receive a refund for a non-selling vehicle ad. The requirements are fine, since they can mandate whatever they choose; however, it is ludicrous to require a written letter via USPS, when email/pdf and faxes are clearly the norm and acceptable in virtually all business communications. I sent multiple emails requesting clarification of the requirement, but never received a response. Ultimately, the timeline for me to submit my refund request expired - which exactly as the intent of AutoTrader in refusing to respond.
It is very clear that the intent of the mailed letter mandate, in lieu of submission by electronic means, is to simply discourage the request of a refund. And, as many have stated, it's of no consequence anyway to waste the time and stamp, because AutoTrader will undoubtedly determine a reason for non-payment. The bottom line is that the AutoTrader "money back guarantee if your vehicle does not sell" is an absolute falsehood. It simply isn't going to happen. Therefore if you choose to use AutoTrader, you need to do so with the intent of your fee for the ad being a sunk cost - sale or no sale.

As others have mentioned, this company is merely another arm of large car dealerships and do not do anything to help the average private consumer. I have a single-owner low mileage (27,000) 2011 Ford Escape Limited, with some relatively minor dents in the front fender. I was also rear-ended a couple of years ago, so it has a "dirty Carfax" reporting one minor accident with minor damage. Anyway, I didn't know that accident was even reported to Carfax because the damage was so minimal I never even got it fixed... just a couple of scratches on the bumper. When I entered the car's information to get an Autotrader sales quote, I accurately identified all of the relevant damage (even overstating it), but didn't know about the Carfax. I received a quote of about $15,000, which was about a thousand below Kelley Blue Book, but I was willing to sell it slightly cheaper to get rid of the thing.
As instructed, I send the quote to a dealer. The dealer calls me and tells me to bring the car in so they can look at it, and they may even offer me more than the Autotrader quote. Lo and behold, when I bring the car in, they say their calculations produced an estimate of only $10,000. When I asked about the extreme discrepancy, they cited the "dirty Carfax". Aside from the "one minor accident with minor damage", the report correctly states that the vehicle has only had one owner, has no odometer problems, and was regularly serviced at Ford Dealerships. That doesn't sound particularly "dirty," to me and certainly not enough to justify a $5000 price hit. This is a huge scam. Do not waste your time.

After several efforts on my part, I lowered the price and fixed the ad, uploading 24 pictures. I was led to believe from their advertising that Autotrader would come and take pictures, but I was clearly wrong. I can't figure out what I got from my investment except a lot of frustration, which I expressed several times over the phone. But they kept telling me the average time to sell a car was 8-12 weeks, which I thought was ridiculously long.
After 4 weeks, I have only received one "legitimate" contact who emailed me, but was never heard from again. I wound up putting the car on Craigslist and got 4 serious inquiries, one resulting in a successful sale. All for free compared to the "VIP" price of $289 which I would only have gotten back if the car hadn't sold after 120 days. First, reading the prior reviews tells me this is a major problem with this company. The State's Corporation Commission wherever they are registered should really look into and audit this company. My issue probably will seem redundant, but will just re-affirm the other tales of woe here. I purchased a 60 day contract with AutoTrader with a few extra services. The core plan was $50 and said it came with a Money Back Guarantee of satisfaction. At the end of its run, they sent me a solicitation to renew. Based on the diagnostics readily available to my personal ad within its content management, there were roughly 1,000 queries about my particular vehicle, but only 2 views of my particular ad in the 60 days. That's exceptionally poor ratios. At the same time I posted my ad on several other FREE car ad sites and had twice as many hits and even live inquiries. My vehicle was in pristine shape and even $3-4,000 below market value.
I sent some friends to the site so they could spread the word and direct it to people they met in person as well and they said it was hard to locate the ad and they even knew what they were searching for. The user interface on AutoTrader is garbage. As a graphic designer I can attest to this. It's loud and messy and clearly based around money for them. Go to Cars.com and see how much more fluid, clean and user friendly it is to navigate.
Anyhow the week following the cancellation, I filed a money back guarantee form simply for the cost of the ad - $50. All procedures were followed correctly. They responded with an email and said they would not refund the money based on the fact I did not put a Vin#. I never freely post this information, but rather provide it to serious buyers when they contact me to prevent fraud issue or what-not. AutoTrader had every piece of info on me, the ad and the vehicle. There was never anything that stated a lack of Vin was a default of contract. If that is the case then they should not even allow ads to post unless that information is input. In short stay far far away from this company and their services. Promises and guarantees unkept by a company trying to exploit loopholes or other tactics is a company not trustworthy or worthy of your dollars in my opinion. Good luck everyone.

I tried to list an ad and was disapproved as they considered it a dealer ad. I called their 1-800 number and spoke to a rep named Wendy. She was excellent, approved the ad and then sent over an email to their other department for further clarification. Wendy phoned me back the next day and told me that I was not considered a dealer and can post as a private person.
I then noticed there was an error on the ad (the motorcycle was listed as USED with 0 km on it). I then had to call in again. I ended up speaking with Wendy once again. She then told me that I should just put "brand new" in the title. When I put brand new in the title it rejected the ad. I called in AGAIN and spoke to a different person this time. She then informed me that I was a dealer and would have to set up a dealer account or pay for the "free" ad. This was after Wendy had put notes on the account regarding this.
I felt that this person was rude and giving me a personal lecture on this subject. This ended as the ad was not approved. I will delete my account and tell everyone that I can think of to read these reviews. They are 100% true. This ended up being a major waste of time for absolutely NOTHING. They gave no direct advice on how to sell my car faster except to buy premium membership. When I did sell my car (not thru Auto Trader) I asked for a credit for unused time left on my account. Their reply is sorry but we got your money to screw you. This company should be listed by every consumer bureau as unreliable and untrustworthy.

Years ago when Auto Trader was a magazine publication I used it with some good results so I decided to try it for online sale of my Toyota. I posted the ad and have been billed $30 which is the minimum package. The ad ran for 5 weeks and I received NO legitimate calls from potential buyers. What I got instead were numerous FRAUDULENT INQUIRIES from a number of scammers. One claimed to be on a ship and buying the vehicle for his brother. The other was an employee of H.P. and out of town on business but wanted the car for his son. I traced both phone numbers to overseas, one coming from Russia (known for international fraud/scams). These clowns wanted my Paypal account information (any guesses what they intended to do with that information?). The only other calls came from a company in California trying to sell me their shipping and advertising services (four calls even though I told them not to call again).
So all in all A COMPLETE WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY TO USE AUTO TRADER. If you want to deal with fraudsters, be my guest but I pulled the ad. Auto Trader of course won't give me a refund because I did not jump through all their hoops. In particular, a requirement to keep the listing for 60 days. Are you kidding me? Why should I have to put up with this crap for some subjective time period, then send in some stupid forms only to be told no, we are not giving you a refund (read the fine print on their "guarantee")? I sold the car on Craigslist to a local buyer in 1 week. I wish I had listed the vehicle first on Craigslist. SAVE YOUR MONEY AND YOUR SANITY. Use Craigslist!!!!

I listed my truck on Autotrader after reading what a great audience they had and all the reviews that they publish about how effective selling automobiles on their site would be. After having my truck listed on their site for 3 weeks, I decided to put an ad on Craigslist for free (Auto Trader's ad cost me $60). On the Auto Trader site, my truck was showing up in results hundreds of times, but I only had one person look at my contact info. I received one text message asking if my truck was the eco boost and that was it. Which makes me think that their reports are a big fat lie!!!! Within 3 days of listing my truck on Craigslist, I had a buyer that was interested in my truck. He came and bought it the next weekend. I requested a refund from Autotrader, but because my truck sold, even though they had nothing to do with the sale, I was not entitled to a refund. My advice if you are selling a car would be to list on Craigslist for free. Save yourself the hassle of being scammed by Auto Trader.

The moment that I placed the ad to sell a car, I started to received "prank" calls or emails of people asking for my personal email so can deal directly. I complained to the company about the service since day one. I sent the evidence about not receiving reliable buyers, they replied to me saying that I was right, the contact came from a fraudulent line. I panicked and I sold the car to a dealer to a great loss! I asked for my money back and they said I'm not entitle to received the money because I sold the car!!! Yes but not through the website ad and they said to me, the guarantee doesn't specify if you sell it through the website or not, only if you sell the car!! I have even spoken with a supervisor and they said to me the same. "You have sold the car, and we can't give you the money back." So my advise to you is do not pay for this service, you will receive the same kind of calls and "buyers" that you will receive on a free website. Nothing special about the service and they do not honor the guarantee that they promise.

I am going to make it my personal mission to blog about, review and inform the public about Autotrader's obvious bait and switch tactics. I got their "OFFER" online for my 2006 Toyota Highlander limited hybrid. I plugged it in 2 ways, one with overstating the blemishes on the car and was given a quote of 7500 dollars. We did it again at First Hyundai in Mass. putting even more blemishes into the equation and on their own computer with their own salesman entering the information he saw on the car, it came to a 7050 dollar "OFFER". But when he walked back to my table after yanking my chain and stringing me along for nearly an hour with "the guys behind the desk", he claimed the car was only worth $4900. When I told them Autotrader and their dealership were bait and switch masters and asked for the key back, they seemed to change their view of my car.
Yes, one minute later it was now worth $6000, not the $7000 they just saw on the computer after they "could not find my online quote" and "had to enter the information again" even though I printed and handed them the certificate I printed at home!! I told them that I did not appreciate being lied to and left. I came home (a 2 hour round trip since there were no "buying agents" in RI), went to a used car dealer around the corner and sold it to him for $6000 all in about 15 minutes. That is 15 minutes at Kingstown Auto on 108 in South Kingstown from the time I pulled in to the time he handed me a check AND he drove me home so I didn't have to call my wife to pick me up!!
That is another thing. In good faith, I had my wife drive to Mass. with me thinking they would cut a check like the dealer here did and she would drive me back to RI. SO, that was 2 round trips of about 2 hours that Auto Trader wasted of my time and money!! Here is my advice: Steer clear of these online quotes from autotrader or any other such company and call Kingstown Auto or a local auto business. It will save you time and make you money!

I also had the car listed on craigslist. 3 days ago I sold my car through craigslist. So autotrader has a "money back guarantee." Well when I contacted them asking to take my ad down, and give me my refund, they refused. They stated that the refund was only if I didn't sell my car, which I DIDN'T sell my car with them. Now, they are telling me that If I wanted a refund I would have had to request my refund 21 days BEFORE my ad expired. How the hell would someone know that OH! It's 21 days before my expiration date, guess I'm not going to sell my car, looks like I should get a refund. Are you kidding me? ** waste of money. They are a bunch of crooks. You will not get it and the dealer will make out like a bandit! Example... I have a 2011 Cadillac SRX Black Book Value which is low... at $24k and change... Auto Trader $20K Trade In BS Certificate they give you which doesn't even come with a condom! If you plan to use that certificate at a dealer, then you better get the black box, The Magnum Condoms, because that's what you're going to need after them sticking it to you with that BS Certificate from Auto Trader! Initially, I paid $120 to put my vehicle on Autotrader and get upgraded to a better standing locally. It seemed to do okay, but not many views on my advertisement. A week after I had it listed, I got a call from an Autotrader salesman telling me how the VIP service would help me sell my car (which is a modified Nissan 350Z and close to a show car). Told me how I would get a lot more views on my car since it would now be a top spot nationally. My car is a damn sexy car and after 2 weeks of it being on the VIP, there was not a change in the ratio of searches to clicks. There was almost 3,000 searches for a 350z and I received about 50-80 clicks on the car, even though it was the highest spot on the page nationally.

In the past (5 years ago) I have had great success with Auto Trader (Canada) but recently (they must be under new ownership?) (April/2014) it has been more than frustrating, even getting disconnected and hung up on. If you want to place an ad, you cannot post it immediately as they have to review it and make sure no persons are in the photos and if so, the photo(s) will be removed. Waiting for an email reply never happened so I had to call each time - even on the priority listing which is only for 8 days and to me is very, very expensive. If you happen to 'edit' your listing once it does show up in the right space and you have to monitor it to make sure it is there, and in the proper heading, then the listing disappears.
Do this on a Friday and your ad is shut down till Monday. I just edited my ad - Friday evening and it has disappeared - called their office - but it is closed till Monday so I lose two days. I just hope they will re-instate those two missed days. Frustrated, I searched for an alternative to post my Mustang for sale and found www.carpages.ca so I submitted an ad there and it runs TILL SOLD for $29.99 ($33.84 with taxes) and you can place a good number of photos (forgot to count them - sorry). At the end of the submission form it says it takes 1-2 business days to approve the ad (Not sure why they can't just submit it when you pay). So, this will be my first time without Auto Trader, but if it works out, I won't go back to AutoTrader.
The girls on the phone were very helpful, but the only calls I got from them were THREE the same day when they wrote down my credit card number wrong and it didn't go through! I did get an email pretty quickly - from a scammer, plus I got calls from some other 'automated' voice system asking if I wanted to sell my car for top dollar. I hung up on the call but it obviously resulted from my ad on the Trader so they must be affiliated some way. Overall, my experience with them now - not impressed and when the ad runs out, it will likely be the last time I use them. Too bad too - I always had great success with them but it must be under some new ownership as now it's terrible.

I took it to their authorized buying dealer, Route 18 Jeep in East Brunswick, and they admitted that I had been very forthright about the condition. However, they offered me $3000 under AutoTrader's guarantee and would not accept the vehicle. This is a scam. The dealer did not want my vehicle, a 2006 Toyota Sienna with 130k miles, because it could not resell it and make a profit. They were going to send it to auction and wanted to make a profit that way. Not my problem. Dealers that work with AutoTrader should honor the price guarantee unless the owner was dishonest about the vehicle. I have contacted AutoTrader numerous times, by phone and email, and they have not responded. Do not do business with these people or Route 18 Jeep in East Brunswick, NJ. Find trade in values by averaging fair to good prices using KBB, NADA or Edmunds. Best bet is to go to a Carmax and they will give you a written offer good for a week or a few hundred miles. I spent almost $100 to sell a Tacoma on AT and sold it in a week on Craigslist instead and sold a RAV 4 later both for a few hundred over dealer trade in. Dealers seem to be using the internet to post their HIGHEST prices and call them internet prices. I went to AutoTrader because I was researching the trade-in value of my vehicle, a 2012 Volvo S60. I was researching this because I have leased this vehicle and the lease will be up in February. I am trying to decide what to do: purchase the car or buy a new one? I'm not sure. The Kelly Blue Book TRADE IN value of the car right now is about $26,500. The amount I can purchase the car right now, according to US Bank is about $26,000. The AutoTrader proposed value (after careful consideration) is $16,068. Does anyone see anything wrong with this?? We are talking about a 2012 Volvo S60 T5, equipped with the technology package (navigation, backup camera, etc.), cold-weather package (heated seats, mirrors), with 35,000 miles, never before in an accident and in perfect condition! This is ODD.
Here is the kicker: after reviewing the initial quote, I realized that for the answer to the question "has there ever been an insurance claim filed against this vehicle?" I had intended to put $500. This was because of a new windshield--I hate dings! However, the quote generated $50,000 as the insurance claim! What?? How stupid. So I resubmitted. I figured that the $50,000 claim must have affected the ODD trade-in value. (And also I wondered who would put a $50,000 claim on a $39,000 automobile) So I resubmitted the request WITHOUT the claim for the windshield. The result? THE SAME: $16,068. And they gave me a list of dealerships who would like to pay me that for the car.
My result: AutoTrader.com is NOT here to work for you--it is here to work for the dealer. To low-ball is one thing, but to come in over $10,000 lower than market value for a 3-year old, no accident, within mileage restriction lease return vehicle is INSULTING. This is not a consumer-advocate website. Not in the slightest.

Subsequently, I received multiple texts and e-mails with further information. However, when I asked for information to arrange an inspection of the car, all contact broke off. In the case of the second vehicle, there was little information on the ad, but a phone number was listed. On calling the number, I had the unpleasant experience of having the other person on the line use a series of expletives then hang up on me. I had checked my bank account and the check had not been deposited. She told me no, I told her that I would like to get my checks back and pay for the car with my credit card. She went and spoke with the owner and she told me that would be no problem. She took my credit card and swiped it and charged me a $3,650.00 for the car. She told me that the guy that does the account was out for lunch and that she has him pull the checks and send them to me in the mail along with the title.
I found out from my bank statement that the check was cashed. The check for $1,650.00 was cashed the same day that I came to the dealership for the second time. The second check was ran three different times and cashed over two months later. I contacted the owner of the dealership and spoke with him in person and over the phone. He refuses to give me my money back. To this day, I never received the title for the car. The car does not run. The motor has gone out on the vehicle. I was charged twice for a lemon. I never received my money back to this day. The owner of the dealership runs an unethical business where he scams people out of their hard earned money.

I place a worry-free ad and figured my car would either sell or I get a refund. The car did not sell, even after pricing it way below blue book value. Their terms and conditions have changed since I placed my ad and refuse to honor the original terms. Now, they say the ad must run 90 days and if you want a refund, you must send written verification 91-111 days after the ad has run in order to receive a refund. That was not true when I placed my ad. If your car does not sell, you will receive a refund. It didn't matter how long the ad was running. Live chat is worthless. I spoke with someone named Gwendolyn. She is an absolute basket case. All she could do was quote current terms and conditions and then tell me to call in if I wanted to speak with someone else.
I am going to post my negative experience all over the web including AutoTrader.com. My car is not for sale anymore. I decided to keep it. The ad will stay posted with my negative experience. Avoid this online fraud shop. Crooks are also flocking to it, just like eBay. I got several unsolicited calls from brokers that told me they have people interested in buying my car but it would cost me $225 for them to sell it. I said fine, sell it, then I'll pay you $225 from the money that I receive. Well, they didn't like that. They wanted their money upfront. I wonder why? Maybe because they didn't have anyone interested in my car? AutoTrader didn't care either. I immediately took down my phone number so I could filter that spam out.

I purchased a 3-week ad. I could not find my ad online, so I questioned them about it. I was told that it was being reviewed (which I understand). My issue is that the ad was reviewed (and not available online) for 48 hours. The 2 days that my ad was not visible online was subtracted from the 3-week ad that I purchased. I paid for a 21-day ad and only got 19 days.

We placed an ad for our classic 1955 Chevy Bel Air. A no-brainer to sell, or so we thought.
One inquiry asked that we post additional pictures of the interior, we did. We purchased an additional six pictures at $20. In what we assumed was a simple mistake, they charged us twice for ordering the extra photos. We have called customer service and were on hold for over 50 minutes before hanging up in disgust. We have sent three emails (with no response) and have gotten nowhere to resolve this problem. Fortunately, I can just dispute the extra charge when we get our bill.
Overall, the response to our ad has left us very disappointed as they have really been bogus to downright scams. Nothing serious has come from advertising with them. The website is hard to maneuver and a lot of steps have to be repeated.
We will never use their services again and will continue to advertise locally. Beware of anyone offering full price off the bat; asking for you to hook up your bank with PayPal or has some excuse as to why the need to leave the country or won't be available to meet eye to eye. They're out there folks, and Auto Trader will do nothing to help you or protect you.
Hope someone is going to read this and take heed. Think carefully before advertising your vehicle with Auto Trader. They are a rip-off.

We paid for an 8-week ad. We didn't receive many calls and when we searched our listing using the sort by price, low to high, we could not find our ad. The reason for this is that Autotrader.com does not sort all of the ads by price. They group them according to how much the ads costs.
Premium listings cost an additional $20 and then your ad will be in the top group by price. If someone had a listing in one of the Featured or Standard groupings, your ad maybe missed. Because when you sort the ads by low to high price, a potential buyer may not realize that when he gets to the highest price he can afford, he still can continue scrolling or he can still get to the next page where there is a whole new group of ads and the prices will start on the low side again. This is so not right.

My husband purchased a vehicle from a dealership 3 months ago. We were told to go home and wait for the paperwork in the mail. By the time we had to make a payment we realized that the bank was charging us a different price. They explained to us that the purchase price for the van was $6,975. The price was fixed from $4500 to $6975 after we left the dealership.
The heating system was never right from the beginning. The vehicle also had no rear headrest in the second or third row and the whole muffler system had to be replaced. We called the service contract and had to pay money towards installing a new heating system that is still not operating. Parts of the system are still missing.
Now, the van is out of the shop and the back heating system is still not working. The service contract is giving us a hard time about fixing the problem. Who can we sue in order to get justice, we feel so victimized and can’t believe that a business would risk losing or paying out more money in the end.

My son purchased a car on AutoTrader in May 2010. He answered the ad for a Honda. The website said that the purchase price was insured for $5,000. Meaning that if something went wrong during the transaction, the buyers didn't have to worry about not having their money refunded. We contacted AutoTrader and they said that there was nothing they could do. I call the local police, like the local police really care about the money you are scammed out of by a worldwide site? My son paid $2,200 twenty two hundred dollars on a car and set up payments for 2 ($700) installments.
When he wired the money to the listed owner on AutoTrader, the man took the picture of the car down and no longer contacted him. I have since, reported this to Internet Fraud Department with the US but have gotten no response. I will not cease trying to recover my son’s money. He is serving his country in the Air force and in pre-med. We have worked hard as a family to attain all we have and will not allow this to go resolved. I need an attorney who is willing to look over all of our receipts and email correspondences.

I located a truck on AutoTrader that I wanted to purchase for my business. I first attempted to contact the "seller" via the number provided on the ad but it went directly to fax. I then sent her an email about my interest in the truck. She asked for my contact information on order to forward to the third-party agent for securing the funds until the transaction was complete. I followed the instructions on wiring the funds via Western Union. I attempted to call several times after that to follow up on the process but to no avail.
A few days later I received another email stating that I needed to send an additional $2500 to secure insurance for the time the truck would be in my possession for inspection. I again asked the "agent" to contact me via phone for clarification on this additional request. He stated he had no way of doing this. I requested my money back and he basically said that it was not possible to get my money back. I then told him I would forward his information on to the proper authorities and he replied via email to do as such.

I listed a 40 Ford on Auto Trader at a cost of $100.00 for 2 months. I tried to list it in their Hot Rod printed magazine, but the website tried to force me to list it in both the "classic" and "Hot Rod" magazine at double the cost. It would not let me select only the "Hot Rod" printed magazine so I listed it online only. I later saw the "Classic" and "Hot Rod" printed magazine were combined into only one magazine. They tried to charge me double for a single magazine. Auto Trader is a rip-off.

I was victim of scam using AutoTrader.com trade mark and licensing to sell vehicles. I went looking for Fraud Awareness on site and discovered it at the bottom in small, almost unnoticeable print. I contacted AutoTrader about the problem and spoke with an operator about the problem. I was informed of policy that I had already discovered too late, and was told that the link had been removed under suspicion of fraud (3/24/10on day of purchase). I had, however, recieved a verification copy of email notification of seller through AutoTrader.com, though when the ad was removed, I was never contacted by the site notifying me (as possible buy) that the link had been removed and why. Had I been informed of the reason, in a timely manner, I could have stopped payment at the source (Moneygram) before the money was collected (3/25/10). I lost $3,282.00 from 401k general purpose loan taken to purchase vehicle.

On June 16, I assisted my aged father in the purchase of a 2008 Ford F150 pickup truck (VIN **). After viewing the AutoTrader.com internet advertisement for this truck, I telephoned Mr. ** (**). After several in depth conversations with Mr. **, ** explained that he could not provide title nor ship the vehicle until paid for in full. ** gave his description of the truck and stated that the vehicle had "a full factory warranty from Ford" and an 8' truck box that is necessary for our farming operation. On the afternoon of June 16, we completed an electronic wire transfer of $9,980 into Mr. **'s personal account number ** at the Bank of America. The truck arrived in Illinois via an auto transport carrier on July 4, 2009.
Upon arrival, the truck in fact had only a 6 1/2 foot box and most importantly, the vehicle was inoperable due to heavy flooding that the vehicle had been subjected to. Inspection revealed that the flood waters had been so deep that dried silt/mud were in the structure of the engine hood and the flood waters had left now dried mud and silt in the acrylic panel that protects the speedometer and dashboard gauges. There was rust on the fabric upholstery of this vehicle that was purported to have only 10 miles. The vehicle engine did not operate, presumably due to water damage to the highly specialized electronics that were subjected to the flooding. The vehicle was rolled off the semi truck, stored in our garage and has not been moved since it arrived. Mr. **’s advertisement stated that the vehicle carried a full factory warranty from Ford, which is fraudulent as Ford Motor Company specifically voids warranty coverage on vehicles that have been subject to damage from fire, flood, or accident.

I bought an ad on AutoTrader.com for $125 on Tuesday, but they never posted the ad and refused to help me. I have contacted customer service many times via phone and email and got the same answer that "it will be available in 24 hours". Can someone please help me? I think it is unfair for companies like this to just take people's money and there's nothing we can do about it.
