What is CarShield?

CarShield offers vehicle service contracts for new and used vehicles, including motorcycles, ATVs and cars with up to 300,000 miles. Purchasing a CarShield vehicle service contract can provide significant peace of mind for owners looking for extended coverage. The company has seven contract options, all of which are available on a month-to-month basis, so you aren’t locked into a long-term commitment.

Contracts are available both in English and Spanish. Most warranties are transferable. All CarShield plans also include access to a customer app that allows you to manage your plan, request 24-hour roadside assistance and get exclusive rewards.

How does CarShield work?

CarShield provides extended auto warranties to protect you against the costs of unforeseen breakdowns. When you need a repair completed, bring your vehicle to an ASE-certified repair facility and file a claim.

Make sure to read the terms and conditions of your contract so you fully understand what CarShield covers. Contracts are available in English and Spanish. Most CarShield contracts are also transferable, meaning the warranty can still cover the car even if you sell it.

Additional CarShield benefits include towing, roadside assistance and rental cars, as well as app access and a map locator for ASE-certified repair facilities.

Compare CarShield coverage plans

Motorcycle plans cover the engine, transmission, drive axle, starter, alternator, power windows, fuel pump, radiator, fuel injector, electrical components, brakes, instrument cluster and NAV/backup camera.

The above table contains only the largest or most popular covered items, so each plan likely includes other parts. For more details on what exactly each plan covers, talk to a CarShield representative.

What isn't covered?

CarShield's vehicle service contracts exclude several items and scenarios across all plans:

  • Wear-and-tear items: Brake pads, tires, wiper blades, filters, belts, hoses, bulbs, batteries
  • Routine maintenance: Oil changes, fluid flushes, alignments, tuneups, spark plugs
  • Cosmetic damage: Paint, upholstery, trim, body panels, rust, dents, scratches
  • Preexisting conditions: Issues present before coverage begins
  • Negligence-related issues: Damage from lack of maintenance, misuse, unauthorized modifications
  • Environmental damage: Floods, fires, hail, earthquakes, animal damage, vandalism, theft
  • Unauthorized repairs: Work done without prior approval, repairs at non-ASE-certified shops

CarShield cost

CarShield plans typically cost between $110 and $170 per month. Rates depend on your coverage level, the deductible, and the vehicle make, model, age and mileage.

Deductibles range from $0 to $250, and different deductible amounts are available for certain plans. With a higher deductible, you’ll pay a lower monthly cost. You pay a deductible whenever you file a claim.

Older vehicles with high mileage will typically cost more to cover than newer vehicles with low mileage. More comprehensive exclusionary plans will cost more than basic powertrain coverage.

You can buy coverage on a month-to-month basis at a price-locked rate. That means that your monthly price will never increase once you begin your coverage, and your protection lasts only as long as you want it to.

The best way to get precise prices is to contact CarShield. You can get a free quote from CarShield by submitting your information via an online form or by calling directly. Pricing isn’t fully transparent because quotes can vary widely, plans are customized to each vehicle and driver, and you need to contact CarShield to confirm exact pricing.

How to file a claim with CarShield

To file a claim with CarShield, take your vehicle to an in-network repair shop, provide your coverage details to the service manager and let them contact the CarShield claims center. If your vehicle is not functional, you can call roadside assistance to arrange for towing to a repair shop. The shop will handle the claim process from there.

Here’s a step-by-step process for filing a claim with CarShield:

  1. Find a network repair shop. CarShield has a network of thousands of repair shops in the U.S. and Canada. You can visit any ASE-certified mechanic or dealership. You can also search for a local in-network repair center at shieldrepairnetwork.com or call 800-852-2502 for assistance.
  2. Take your vehicle to the shop. If your car is functional, bring it to any network shop in your area. If not, call roadside assistance at 866-222-7869 for towing, which is included in all of CarShield’s contracts.
  3. Provide your contract. After diagnosing the problem, but before performing any work, give your contract to the service manager or certified technician.
  4. Allow the repair shop to handle the claim. The shop will contact the CarShield claims department directly. The claims administrator will determine what is covered under your plan.
  5. Get approval. Once CarShield approves your claim, it will directly pay the repair facility. You will be responsible for paying your deductible and any costs not approved or covered by your contract.

If your contract comes with rental car benefits, CarShield will provide a rental through Enterprise while your vehicle is being fixed. Some plans may be eligible for rideshare reimbursement instead of a rental car.

I had good experiences with CarShield in the past, until they started jacking up the rates too high, and I had to stop it. I recently got started with them again because they gave me lower rates. Also, I have an older vehicle and a lot of places really didn't want to cover what I needed. Most of them would only offer me the standard transmission, but CarShield was able to offer me electronics. I have an SUV, and a lot of them don't like to cover the trunk actuator switch or any electricals. Signing up went pretty smoothly. Even the first time I had it done, I didn't have any problems. The new one they gave me this time was the key tag and the cards. I hadn't had that before.

I have three vehicles and I went through CarShield for all of them. I got the hardcopy of my contracts and handbook within a week. They are straightforward but the different tiers is what kind of gets me. All three of my vehicles are different ages, and I want them to all be in the same tier but, unfortunately, they're not. One of my vehicles was put in a different tier from the other two. I have two cars under 100,000 miles, and the vehicle that I drive every day is over 100,000 miles. So, I'm thinking that might have been because of the mileage, and they didn't explain that one very well. But I called six different warranty companies, and they were all the same thing. They didn't tell you if it was based on mileage or not. If it's based on mileage, that's something I really should have known ahead of time. And if there was an option to pay for the tier that I wanted, even if I had to pay a little more, that would have been nice to know.

Other than that, when I had a problem with the air conditioners in two of my vehicles, CarShield was the only one that had no problems getting them fixed and still keeping the coverage affordable. I tried Endurance for a minute and when I needed to get my air conditioner fixed, they waited until the last minute to say that it was not covered. Also, I have three separate policies on three different vehicles. It'd be nice if they were put in one policy, but CarShield don't put them all under one policy anymore, so they can track which vehicle is being worked on. Aside from that, there are some things they’re covering on two of my vehicles, but they don't cover on my third vehicle. But pretty much, they cover just about everything and I'm pretty satisfied with them. I haven't had any problems so far and they communicate very well with the dealership, versus some of the other ones that I had.

I had a warranty on my car that I wasn't happy with, and I was looking for an alternate protection for my vehicle. I was evaluating some of the choices, and the thing that really drew me to CarShield was the customer service that was exhibited when I was inquiring about the policy. The representative was very good, very in-depth, and worked with me through it to make sure that I got exactly what I needed. He didn't over promise and under deliver. He really took the time to talk to me about it, and I appreciated that, because I didn't feel like I was being rushed to sign the paperwork and take on their services. I felt that he actually took the time to evaluate what my needs were, and then look at what the company could do to match that.

I needed protection, and I needed it at a good cost. My services were kind of bundled. I was recognized for my military service. It was an accumulation of different things, but the biggest thing was matching my needs and keeping it within a price range that was feasible but also met the needs of my car and my finances. I'm very happy with the services. I'm still fighting with a company that I have. It was one of those protections that were given when you first bought a car. It's been a freaking nightmare almost to the point where I've got to take them to court. It’s a totally different experience with CarShield. I've shared this experience with other people, and I hope that their finances allow them to provide protection for themselves as well.

Just like any other warranty company, the print can be defective to those of us who sometimes have trouble understanding contracts and automotive terminology. So yes much of what we need done may not be covered under the contract but much is. I've been denied or have had to pay out of pocket for most of my claims but this last claim may go in my favor. I just wish things were more clear when it comes to coverages. For instance, my daughter's car have a dual clutch. So because of that they would not pay for a new or rebuilt transmission. Because inside the transmission is a part that is not covered by the warranty. So she traded the car in for another one and she dropped Car Shield.

I have no intentions on dropping car shield because I have had other warranty company and they are all about the same. So I feel like some coverage is better than none at all. So I suggest that you read your contract to the best of your knowledge and when you come across something that doesn't sound right or you just don't understand, then call car shield and have them explain it until you do. Customer service always rank from 3 to 5 but, claims rank from 1 to 3 most times. And like I said, it's because of our understanding of the contract. This just my experiences with car shield and other warranty companies.

I wanted to have something in place that will help with any sudden maintenance issues to cut the cost on how much it would cost to fix it, and I looked into extended warranties. I went with CarShield since I wasn’t too familiar with any of the other companies out there and I heard more about them. Then, my father also has CarShield. So I didn't do too much comparison with other warranty companies. The reps have always been friendly, very helpful and knowledgeable. I've always had a great experience talking to them whenever I needed to have roadside assistance or any type of claim to call them about. I like their customer service. My payments are always on auto-debit. Sometimes, I wanted to take it off because I wasn't sure that I was enrolled in it. But it just always seems to come out. But even when I've had it where I had to switch accounts, I would just pay it on the app.

Having the CarShield warranty helps me feel prepared. I have something in place that will provide support for me if something were to happen. And if you don't have that, you drive a little bit more carefully. My mind feels at ease just knowing that I have that type of attachment when I'm driving around, especially when it comes to roads and the potholes. Sometimes things happen that are outside of your control and just knowing that I have something that can help me if something were to go wrong just helps you sit a little better while you're riding around. I heard that sometimes mechanics don't like dealing with CarShield because it takes too long to process claims or reimbursement. So, if there's a way to enhance that process, just to avoid certain mechanics not wanting to take the insurance or take the protection, that would be good. I would encourage others to get the protection warranty so they can have peace of mind.

My warranty just ran out on my car and my insurance went down by $1,300 a year. So, it was important for me to get the extended coverage. So now, what I pay for CarShield plus my insurance equals about what I was previously paying for insurance alone. The sign-up process with CarShield was very easy and the guy was very knowledgeable, thorough and pleasant. CarShield’s month-to-month contract suited me. I just had to pay out $2,000 to get my car fixed. It’s normal wear-and-tear things, and they don’t cover it. The list of coverage includes anything electrical, such as your starter, ignition, air conditioning, heat, engine, and transmission, as long as you change your oil regularly and do upkeep. But they don’t cover brakes.

Having CarShield gives me peace of mind for things like engines and transmissions because I’ve had those go under my original warranty, which was basically the same setup. I had to replace the rear differential at no cost to me. I also had to replace my powertrain unit, which would have been about a $2,500 job, and I only paid the $100 deductible. The extended warranty with CarShield is worth it to me. The warranty I paid for when I bought the car more than paid for itself just with those two repairs, and there were other things too. I also had to replace the air conditioning system. Other than the inconvenience of not having a car for a while, it worked itself out. I could have rented one since I have rental coverage as well, but I didn’t.

Manuel, we understand your concerns regarding the claims process and appreciate the opportunity to address them. During the enrollment process, customers are advised to follow the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule and retain maintenance records, as this information may be requested during the claims review process. These requirements, along with replacement part guidelines, are outlined within the terms of the contract. In regard to repairs, contracts may allow for the use of approved replacement parts, which are provided with warranties as part of the repair process. We understand this may not have aligned with your expectations and would appreciate the opportunity to review your concerns further.
