Wal-Mart Tries to Buff Its Image

Douglas of Magnolia TX (12/11/07)
I saw some of the customer service complaints about WalMart and would have to agree that customer service has definitely gone downhill at WalMart. The 2978 store in the Woodlands is a prime example. I had to wait a long time at the register and mentioned to the manager, who was standing right in front of me, that I diddn't have time to wait and had to leave. The manager just gave me a strange look as though he diddn't understand why I was leaving.

They wasted my time and treated me with disrespect when I attempted to explain myself in a courteous manner.

Elizabeth of New York NY (12/11/07)
I ordered nearly 1,000 of items on Walmart.com. After I put in the order, I received an email asking me to call American Express to verify my charge at Wal-mart. I did. American Express verified the charge and approved it. I was supposed to receive the delivery within two to four days. I didn't. The day before the last promised date of delivery, I received another email regarding verification of my charge. Again I verified the charge and again I called Wal-mart customer service -- the woman I spoke with apologized for the inconvenience, assured me that the charge was fine, promised to credit the 90+ that I had paid for shipping and promised that I would receive my shipment by December 6th. I

explained to her that it was Chanukah and that the Wii console and the toys and games I ordered were gifts for the holiday. She assured me that they would have the gifts there at the latest by Friday even though it wasn't a Christmas order. The shipment never arrived. Calls to customer service indicated that Wal-mart had canceled the order, to meet Christmas demand. They never notified me of the cancelation and just told me that I could go on the web-site and re-order everything, (everything is already out of stock). The customer service representatives that I spoke with were useless, inept and infuriating. There was no apology. American Express Platinum services have confirmed that there was no problem with the charge on their end and in the 18years I've had my card, I've never had any difficulty charging anything (albeit I sometimes had to verify information for large charges exceeding 10,000 and for some of my large overseas expenditures). I have no spending limit. Wal-Mart had no reason for the cancelation, no explanation, and gave no apology for their mistake. My kids, who had waited patiently the entire holiday for their gifts -- never received them. I gained the impression that a number of the customer service agents were anti-semitic and didn't see any reason to be concerned about timely delivery for the Jewish holiday of Hanukah.

Joseph of Owosso, MI December 11, 2007

Joseph of Owosso MI (12/11/07)
My brother and I went into Walmart tonight about 1:00 am to do some late night Christmas shopping. I had intentions of getting a few things for my son and my brother was going to get some food shopping done. We walked first over to the food isles so he could get his few things. When I walked past the two workers at the front door on the west of the building, instead of greeting me and saying something polite they just turned their heads. So I just kept walking thinking nothing about it and then I get to the second isle and am looking around and here are those two workers again staring at me in a distance.

I kept walking around the store with my brother so he could finish up his grocery shopping and while we were down an isle reading labels on boxes this lady comes walking up and with a weird tone says what are you guys looking for. We responded with nothing. We finished up his shopping and walked over to the electronics so I could buy a gift and the guy at the electronics would not let us stand alone to look at games. I said lets just pay for our stuff and go somewhere else to finish.

Well, we get up to the cash register and there was an officer standing there and when he was walking he stopped and talked to those guys. The lady at the cash register rung us up and told me twice in a moody tone to make sure I showed my receipt at the door. I waited for my brother and saw two guys walk up there and she never said any word to them. They walked out of the store without showing a receipt to the two guys but when my brother and I got to that end to leave they stopped us in our tracks and demanded we show them. I am completely humiliated and shocked that after coming into this store for all these years and spending as much money as I do that I could be looked up on like a thief. Tomorrow first thing, I am going back out to return the 70 dollars in merchandise I purchased and am never shopping at this place again.

I am upset with the way I was treated at this business and I would like if someone could please do something about it. Those workers are the most untrusting, and very unfriendly.

John of Charleston, SC December 4, 2007

John of Charleston SC (12/04/07)
A couple of days after this past Thanksgiving our neighbor asked if we could help her out by taking her car up to Walmart to get a plug put in her tire because there was a small nail that was stuck in it. So my wife volunteered to go because I was working on our car at the time. They arrive at Walmart and ask for the plug and one of the technicians named Rob tells them that Walmart can not put a plug in it because it is near the sidewall and they can't be held liable.  He then proceeds to pull the nail out of the tire causing the tire to become completely deflated. My wife then said, "well, now you have to do something because you made the tire flat." So he says, "I can show you how to put the plug in the tire but I am not allowed."

So, the plug gets put in the tire and the service mangager (Wendell Reid) is on his way out to fill up the tire saying I ain't got to put no air in this tire, I ain't got to do nothing you say. Then my wife says, "Well, yes you do have to put air in it because ya'll made it flat." That is what started the whole conflict. Then words started getting exchanged he was cursing at her and she was cursing at him. Then I get a call from my wife and she is crying and panicking. She tells me that the service manager (Wendell Reid) and a couple of other technicians were insinuating that they wanted to fight her. They had made a semi circle around her and she felt threatened for her life. The Service manager told her that she needs to bring her man up her to fight him.

I then rushed up to Walmart and when I got there they are still basically surrounding her. I take her inside and ask an associate to contact the store manager immediately. He is at lunch so we get to talk to the assistant manager. She (the Asst Manager) acts like she doesn't care that this happened at all. She says that she will review the security tapes. After reviewing the tapes she comes back and says that my wife can't be seen on any of the camera views and that they don't have cameras pointing into the parking lot by the Tire and Lube Express. My wife is very upset still at this time and is still cursing and the asst. manager trys to tell her she is not allowed to use that language in the store. Now comes the store manager who is a little more compassionate and tries to offer us a gift card. He says he will talk to Wendell about what happened. That they have to view his history and all that.

My wife has changed her entire outlook on people. She is still traumatized by this and now afraid of African American Males or even to be alone in public. I have purchased her pepper spray and she wants to get her concealed weapons license. This has caused serious psychological damage. They harrased my wife and their actions were totally uncalled for. We will never shop at Walmart again for anything. I hope other people never have to experience this kind of treatment from anyone.

Michael of Meridian, MS November 25, 2007

Michael of Meridian MS (11/25/07)
Walmart had a sale for a Playstation-3 80 gig and 10 free blue-ray DVD. I tried for two days to purchase this item at both Super Wal-Mart centers in Meridian, Mississippi. I was told they cannot give me a rain check. That is garbage. When a store has a 3-day sale on a item, and it cannot be found at either store something is wrong. I have had this happen before at Thanksgiving sales and was always issued a rain check. This item that was on sale did not say it was limited in quantity so they should be obligated to issue a rain check. Where has the ethics gone?
