Post-Holiday Letdown

Shawna of Jacksonville, FL (12/28/05)
When checking out at Victoria's Secret I was asked if I would like an "angel card" that would give me savings on future purchases. The woman checking me out said I would not have to fill out anything and never mentioned that it was a credit card.

I had already given her my bankcard to charge, so I did not know when signing the screen that she had charged it to my "brand new account" that I didn't open. She put my angel card in the bag and I didn't notice it until I got home. That's when I saw my account number and limit on the temporary card.

Anthony of Anaheim Hills CA (12/21/04):
The salesperson asked if I wanted extra savings in the future with no obligation. She stated that with an "Angel Card" my wife or I could expect extras savings and information on sales. However, what she didn't mention was that this card is a CREDIT CARD. At no point did the term CREDIT come up. She asked for information, and then slyly said she needed my driver's license and social security # for verification. She was totally misleading, but reassuring that this was just a great way to save, no obligation. It was a total deceiving lie to issue me a credit card that I absolutely did not care to open.

Multiple credit cards can impact credit reports. And I simply do not choose to carry additional cards. After checking on the internet, this deceiving tactic seems to be a running strategy of Victoria Secret. There are multiple reports of people being equally deceived by this cloaked credit card referred to as the Angel Card.

Sharon of Gainesville FL (1/27/04):
I am a frequent visitor to Victoria Secret and on my last visit as my purchase was being rung up I was asked about taking their Angels Card. It was explained to me that it was a points reward card. I specifically asked if this has any form of credit check and if it did, I was not interested.

Assured that it was not a credit card, I agreed. I did think it was unusual to ask for my social security number and it was not until I returned home that I read the paperwork they had put in the bag. Across the top was CREDIT AGREEMENT. I was furious and telephoned the store straight away. They advised me to contact the Credit Card company which my husband did the next day and we have yet to have this removed from my credit history.

As we are in the process of building our credit history, having lived in the USA for 20 months, anything like a luxury Credit Card is not needed. We are looking to finance a house purchase with a mortgage and the net result of this was a decline in my credit score by some considerable margin. According to a mortgage company we spoke to, we have dropped into a lower catagory and are unable to get the lowest rate we were originaly looking at. This basic lie to get me to take their credit card could cost us thousands of dollars over the next 15 years!

Ruthanna of Miami FL (7/14/03):
Today I find a credit report denying credit for a Victoria Secret credit card. The fact is, I never knowlingly applied for this card. In fact, I was asked the usual question before my transaction and I said NO. It was then I was invited to fill out a form for future coupons and mail offers. I did so. Next thing I know I'm denied credit that I never applied for and the report will show up on my credit report.

Alana of Golden CO (7/21/05):
Many things have happened with VS over the past couple years, but I only have time for the latest and last incident. I opened an Angel card and ordered a lot of clothes on it. I moved recently and called VS to change my address. I kept getting the bills at the old address leaving little time to pay. I missed a couple bills and they closed my account.

To make a long story short, VS admits to me calling them 9 times to change my address not counting me changing it 2 times on the bill. They said I needed to call the number on the back of my VS card finally after complaining the 10th time. Why the hell didn't they tell me this the first time and why didn't they change it when I sent it on the back of the bill! This incident doesn't even begin to explain all of the problems I've had with them, but this was probably the worst.

Cassandra of Plantation FL (10/6/04):
I got a credit card from Victoria's Secret. When the first bill came I called to make a payment. I had to do check by phone with a fee of $5.00. I agreed and gave the man I spoke with my checking information. Then the 2nd bill came around and again I called to do the "convenient" check by phone. They stated that they had my information and my account would be charged. Then around the next billing date I recieved a form in the mail stating that I never paid any of my bills. Of course being upset I called right away.

The woman I spoke with seemed very nice and told me that they had the wrong checking information all along. She did appologize, stating that everytime a customer calls, the agents should verify all the information on the account. Of course I agree. So she took the correct information and repeats it to me and said she would correct the problem. So on the next billing date I received another letter in the mail stating that my account couldn't be charged and to call A.S.A.P to fix it or my account will be cut off and further action will be taken. So I called and spoke with another woman. Of course at that point I was extremely mad. I asked why my account couldn't be charged and she repeated my account information. IT WAS WRONG! Gee, to my suprise, it was the same wrong account # that they told me before.

I told her about my last call and how the woman took my account information and she said that THEY HAVE NO RECORD OF THAT! So I told the lady to cancel my credit card account and AGAIN went over my checking information. Of course this time it went through. How convenient!

Zhen of Dublin OH (6/23/04):
I am writing regarding inaccurate data being reported on my account with Victoria’s Secret, regarding late charges that were consequently waived from the account. On May 8th, 2004, I received a telephone call from VS informing me that there was an unpaid balance on the account of $44.30 that was past due. I was informed that the balance was from a purchase made in September 2003. Since this was the first time that I had been notified that there was an outstanding balance due on the account, I inquired as to why I had not received any mailed correspondence regarding the bill.

According to VS’s records, the statements that were mailed had been returned “undeliverable”. The representative then verified that the mailing address that was on record for the account was correct. Due to the lack of notification regarding the balance that was due on the account, I requested that Victoria’s Secret remove all the late fees off the account. Also, Victoria’s Secret had not made an attempt to make contact regarding the unpaid balance until May 8, 2004, yet I had still been receiving the regular advertising correspondence sent by VS, and my other mails during this period of time.

VS agreed to remove the late fees, and I made a payment for the remaining balance due of $44.30. Victoria’s Secret was then supposed to submit a credit correction to removed any incorrect reporting activities. The account has a zero balance and all past due activities on this account should have been permanently removed. But when the Credit Bureau agancies contacted them, they said yes the account is 0 balance, but they don't want to remove the late payment history. Now I have a black mark on my credit report.

jeannette of Xenia OH (7/28/03):
I put in a change of address at the time I placed a charge. They did not update my address change and I therefore did not receive my bill. I eventually got notice and paid the bill. They said they would take that off of my credit report since they failed to update my address, but it is still on my credit report.

Garri of Loma Linda CA writes (11/28/01):
On 11/12/01, I purchased one undergarment for $40.85 from Victoria's Secret using my B of A debit card. During the transaction, the sales associate asked if I would like to join their Angel Club to receive free catalogs and discount coupons. Without a second thought, I provided the associate with my name and address, which was being entered into a cash register, as I spoke. When asked for my social security number, I relayed the number then asked why was it needed?

It was too late! The associate was running a credit check for a credit card that I did not approve. Upon receipt of the credit card in the mail, I contacted the Victoria’s Secret Credit Card provider and asked that they remove the inquiry and credit card account that I did not authorize.

When I spoke to Sabastian at the Credit Company, he informed me that he could not remove my account due to a balance of $40.85. I informed him that this exact amount was debited from my B of A account so how could it be on the VS card? After calling B of A and looking at my receipt, I realized the sales associate never used the B of A card that I presented, but placed the transaction on the new credit card that I never authorized. I have been unsuccessful in my attempts to talk to a live person at the VS headquarters. I have left messages requesting a return telephone call since November 24, 2001.

Garri should write to the company, preferably via certified mail, return receipt requested, enclosing a check for $40.85 and directing that the account be closed.
