Victoria Too Open With Her Secrets

Cathy of Raleigh, NC (2/8/05):
While walking with my ten-year-old daughter through Crabtree Valley Mall in Raleigh, I was shocked at the explicate poses of the mannequins in the Victoria Secret's window display. I went in to speak with the manager, and was informed that there was nothing she can do about it. She explained that it was a corporate advertising campaign strategy and that I could call the corporate office to voice my opinion.

The manager then proceeded to give me the phone number for the office that wasn't even a toll free number. Despite the personal cost, I have contact the company and voiced my disdain.

These new mannequins are designed to be more life like, being flesh colored and more anatomically correct, as opposed to the old white basic mannequins. These mannequins are so sexually explicit they appear to have stepped off of a Play Boy cover. If the thongs weren't suggestive enough, these mannequins are blind folded and arranged in various sexual positions. I do not believe that this is something that my child should be exposed to at her age.

I also feel that as an adult, I have the right to shop at my favorite mall without having to endure pornography. I assure you, it is not welcome in my home nor is it welcome in my role as a consumer.

Sex shops tint and cover their windows. If Victoria's Secret's new marketing strategy is to sell sex, instead of tasteful lingerie then please ask them to have the same courtesy of covering their windows. I can turn off the TV when their ads come on. I can throw away their catalogs when they come in the mail. But I feel it is very unfair that I would have to stop shopping at my favorite mall because I am not able to shelter my child from seeing these sexually explicit displays.
