Equifax in Trouble Again

Equifax can't keep anything straight ... and doesn't seem to try very hard. For the second time, the company has been penalized by the Federal Trade Commission for not responding to consumer inquiries. That will come as no news to the hundreds who've written to us, including those below:

Sandra of Conyers, GA May 19, 2009

I had requested a credit report years ago, complained about an address on our report that I have NEVER lived at, I filed a complaint form with Equifax, now to find out that the address is still on the report. Now I have credit debt that has never made it to me and they will not take off of my report the NON address I NEVER lived at

Dan of Lakeway, TX May 18, 2009

Equifax took 30 days to mail my FREE report to me after claiming it would be 48-72 hours. Meanwhile, I lost the opportunity to dispute the 3 items that showed and lost out on an opportunity to refinance a mortgage. I called Equifax again today when I received the report and asked the names of those listed on the report and was told that could not be given over the phone.

I find it ironic that any yahoo from any company can request my report without providing Equifax with my permission to do so and then I can't even get a list of who is on the report without waiting 30 days for the original report and then another 30 days to request their names and then who knows how long to resolve the issue. Seems like Equifax is all to powerful with peoples lives.

Antonio of Miami, FL May 16, 2009

EQUIFAX is reporting inaccurate and bad information on my credit report damaging mi credit and live, and they report many point over the other agencies, whay?. this Equifax agency that can ruin the lives of so many, should be investigated by the FTC. Everyone's best bet would be to file a formal complaint with the FTC against Equifax. How can the government not step in and regulate this better. Why this agency exist??

Jerry of Chicago, IL May 15, 2009

Equifax did not allow me to "view and print" my free credit report to which I was entitled under FCRA because their credit report on me was the basis of a bank reducing the credit line on my credit card by half. When I clicked on "view and print" after being approved for my report at zero cost a page displayed that required me to log in as a member, which I could not do. And I could not get past this page to view and print my report.

A check of the Equifax Web site stated that to become I would have to purchase my credit report or some other Equifax product.I returned to the request site only to be told that my report was not available online, providing me with a number to call to obtain a copy. A call revealed that such copy would cost 7.95.

I then sent a complaint letter to Equifax. Ten days later, still not having received a reply to my letter, I again tried to obtain my free credit report through the Equifax Web site, only to see a claim that I had already received it and now would have to pay 10 to obtain a copy. A day later I received a written reply to my letter from Equifax. It claimed that I had obtained my credit report and to obtain a copy I now would have to pay 11, one dollar more than the previous asking price, and 3.05 more than the initial price. I believe their Web site - Equifax.com/fcra - is set up so that people can never actually view and print their credit reports and will end up purchasing a report that should be free under FCRA.

I always have had a clean report and a good credit rating, with never any past dues and an outstanding mortgage principal of less than one-fifth our home's current value, and when I refinanced my mortgage seven or so years ago my FICO score was near the top. Thus I worry about what is in my credit report that led a bank to cut my credit line in half and really want to see that report ASAP. Yet I do not want to pay Equifax for a report I should have been able to view and print at no cost. I believe they are trying to force me, and probably others, to just say the heck with it and pay to Equifax money they do not deserve and should not, under FCRA, get. It's a troubling, frustrating dilemma.

Ronnie of Odessa, FL May 11, 2009

Late last year my credit card company notified me of a negative credit history filed with one of the credit reporting agencies, i.e., Equifax. I contacted them (Equifax) and found out that I had been a victim of identity theft. Subsequently, I entered into contract with Equifax for them to re: their ID alert service at the tune of 15/month.

The erroneous information appeared to be removed from the other credit reporting agencies, i.e., TransUnion and Experian; however, Equifax has taken their sweet time to remove the information despite the fact that the companies reporting the information have notified the credit reporting agencies that I was a victim of identify theft. Moreover, information previously removed by Equifax has been subsequently added back into my credit file. It is very, very difficult to contact Equifax. My credit has not been enhanced since they've been involved in helping to clean it up!

Lynette of Glendora, CA May 9, 2009

I recently filed a dispute with Equifax, regarding collection agency, Recovery Solution Specialist. I was subsequently advised that the collection was considered to be my responsibility. I would like to make note, for the record, that I first received a notice from Recovery Solution Specialists on 3/9/05 and faxed their office a letter 3/9/05 advising that I had never received a bill from Cedars Sinai Lab. I also indicated that, while I had not received a bill, I believed that the services were related to lab work in connection with a work related case. I also informed them that they should send the bill to the insurance carrier. I never heard from their agency again and to date have not received a bill or itemized statement related to the charges of Cedars Sinai Lab. Surprisingly, when I checked my credit report, their agency was listed as a collection agency. To top things off, I sent another letter to Recovery Solution Specialists on April 21, 2009, at the address listed on my credit report. The letter was returned, attempted-not known. After receiving the returned letter, I called Recovery Solution Specialists at the number on my credit report on May 1, 2009. I was unable to get a live person on the phone and therefore left a message. I have not received a return phone call. I am very upset by Recovery Solution Specialists' business practices, not to mention the financial impact this is having.

Theresa of Metairie, LA May 6, 2009

Equifax refuses to allow me my report online with a bogus security freeze on my account. I got the other two credit reporting reports with NO problem whatsoever. They need to be shut down and replaced. First, a very large penalty would be appreciated.

Jesse of Asheville, NC May 5, 2009

My wife signed up for Equifax, used the service for a while and then canceled it. Equifax charged us the fallowing month, but we figured we did not cancel early enough the previous month so they charged us. The next month they charged us again, so we called again and asked them not to charge us anymore and credit our account for the charge that month, they agreed to do so. The next month we received no charge, but the month after they did charge us again and caused us a NSF charge of 35.00, so I called them again and they said they have no record of that transaction, so I printed our transaction summary and faxed it to them. They said it was them who charged us (which we already knew), but that they would have to do an investigation before they could give us a credit. We have still not received a credit from them, so if you are thinking of using their service I would strongly recommend against it.

Carolyn of Sherman Oaks, CA May 4, 2009

I used www.annualcreditreport.com to aply for my FREE ANNUAL CREDIT REPORTS from the 3 credit agencies. I filled out all of the info on this website answering security questions to verify my authenciticy. Unlike the other credit agencie that gave me immediate access, Equifax sent me an email verifying my order & instruction me on where & how to get my report. I was unable to log on per their instructions...called their number listed above 3 times...on call #1, was told to call back the next day...on call #2, they had tech issues...and on call #3 I answered 7 detailed security questions so they could 'verify me' & the agent claimed he reset my password and would email it to me...I never got any such email. I waited on hold for a supervisor to help me but was eventually told one would call me back.

I have read on your website that others have had this kind of run around from Equifax. I am entitled to one annual free credit report from each agency, but Equifax doesn't want to give me mine. I told them I was filing this complaint

B of Lincroft, NJ May 4, 2009

Tried to cancel Equifax credit monitoring service and they kept charging year after year. GOOD ADVICE: IF YOU CANCEL EQUIFAX SERVICES, CANCEL YOUR CARD AS WELL SO THAT THEY CANNOT CONTINUE TO CHARGE YOU. Equifax is gang-like, no one quits without a "fight."
