AOL Offers to Settle Federal Charges
Class Action Suit Filed

Jim of Louisville KY (3/7/03):
On or about 03/02/03, the below items were shipped to me, the sum of $115.38 was pulled from my account. On 03/03/03 I returned the items using the allowed codes. As of this date I have had no response as to when my money will be returned. I did not care for the items or for the fact that I was double-sent one item.

Michael of Verona NJ (2/16/03):
I received software entitled "PC Like New" and "Window Washer," neither of which came to my expectations. I returned same in the box in which they were received with a form attached. I was to receive a confirming e-mail and reimbursement. I have received neither. I am out the $70.45 charge plus shipping via USPS.

Brenda of Burbank CA (1/18/03):
I ordered the 30 day free trial offer for the Minotta 240M camera - it was a Christmas Gift - the person I gave it to did not want this camera - I returned it within the 30 day time frame and still not had a response - I returned Certified Mail - I need the $83 credited back to my account or some response as to when I can expect reimbursement.

A couple of year ago - I ordered a scanner from direct shop - it was offered in 4 easy payments - they took the entire amount at once - contacting the about this - I was more or less told "shit happens." I swore at that time I would never order from Direct shop again...I deceided to give them another chance. I am hoping I do not have to make extensive complaints in this matter.

Wayne of Littleton NH (1/4/03):
I purchased a Point & Speak from AOL Shop Direct. I returned the product on 9/25/02 - parcel post, well within the 30 day reqired limit. To date I have not received my refund of $39.95. I will report my loss to the US Postal Service and collect my insurance.

Kathy of Groton CT (11/18/02):
Back on August 01, 2002 I returned a digital camera that was under warranty to have it repaired and sent back to me. I sent it back insured mail and it is now Nov. 18th, 2002 and I have heard nothing from AOL Shop Direct and never got my camera back. I have never heard from them but yes have insured postal reciept for camera. It is a $200 digital camera and I am very upset to have not gotten a replacement or at least a word about it.

Phyllis of Irvington NJ writes (7/6/02):
I was charged $99.00 for a DSL modem that I sent back to AOL shop direct. I called the customer services number for AOL. I was on hold and transferred to several other numbers. After an hour I still did not speak to anyone that could resolve my problem.

So far I still have the charge on my credit card account.

Judith of Dolton IL (6/24/02):
I order the yellow Steam Buggy from AOL sometime in early April, 2002. I discovered that one important part was missing on the Steam Buggy. I called AOL Shop Direct's Customer Service Department and was told that I should send the entire machine back to the company and that I would be sent a new unit with all the parts or my account would be adjusted and the expense of the Steam Buggy would be credited to my charge account.

I sent the Steam Buggy back to AOL Shop Direct as instructed (insured the unit for $200.00)using the return labels in the box. Today is June 24, 2002 and to-date, I not received another unit nor have I heard ONE WORD from AOL Shop Direct about this Steam Buggy nor has anything been said about crediting my account of the estimated $140.00. Is this the way AOL does business? I demand my money be returned to me ASAP. P.S. I have my U.S. Postal Service Receipt to show as proof that I did return your item!

My money has not been returned to me and no one has written or called acknowledging this neglect. It seems as though someone slipped up and no one is admitting it as long as I don't put up a fuss!!

Billy of Cullman AL (6/14/02):
I was sent the wrong mdse. I was told to return it and enclose a bill for the shipping charges incurred and the charges would be returned to me in a check. I did exactly that. More than a month has passed and no response.

Yan of New Haven CT (2/23/02):
I have got a software from AOL shop direct. I was told if I do not like it and send them back, I will get refund. However, after I sent the software back a month ago, I have had $41.70 taken out of my credit card by AOL Shop Direct. And recently more payments of $33.75 were taken out of my credit card again. How do they get away with this?

Megan of Evergreen CO (1/18/02):
On the 24th of December, $32.95 was deducted from my checking account for a product that was purchased and returned to AOL Shop Direct in October. AOL continued to charge me for this product every month, even though it was returned during the 30-day trial period. Every month they claimed "this problems will not occur again". Every month I had to contact and have them credit the money that was deducted from my account.

In December, due to the holiday and being out of town, I was not able to contact them immediately. The withdrawal of $32.95 caused by account to be overdrawn and I was charged with 4 non-sufficient fees at the amount of $24.00 each, a total of $96.00. I faxed them a account summarry immediately. I received a response by email from Desiree McK that I am responsible for all payments deducted from my account for items purchased. I responded that obviously she did not research my account, or she would see the product was returned in Oct.

She then responded that my account is being researched and should receive a response within 48 hours, this was Jan. 7. I inquired about my response and was giving a customer service phone number to contact. From there, I was given two more phone numbers and an extension and manager Judith S to contact. I have left three voice mails for Judith, not one returned. I called on the 17th of Jan. and spoke with 3 different individuals, who responded they could not help me, but their "manager said I would not receive refund because they are not responsible for pop-up ads."
