You'll find Whirlpool appliances at Sears and other retailers. The company's particularly tight with Sears, which gave it not one but six "Partners in Progress" awards recently.

Headquartered in Benton Harbor, Michigan, Whirlpool Corp. has its primary plants in Clyde and Marion, Ohio. The company is a major supporter of Habitat for Humanity and since the 1970s has emphasized environmental considerations in its design and manufacturing process. It's considered a leader in the development of energy efficient appliances for the home.

But of course, the picture's never quite as rosy as the annual report might indicate. There are those who are less than satisfied with their Whirlpool washing machines, refrigerators and so forth, as the complaints in this section indicate.

Whirlpool also makes the KitchenAid line of products.
