It's way too late to do much good now but it may be some comfort to know that, back in 2005, Maytag settled a class action lawsuit covering two million homeowners who had trouble with their Maytag Neptune washers. But as the complaints below indicate, lots of problems remain. Paul of Winthrop, MA October 6, 2009 My 4 year and 2 month old Maytag Nuptune washer broke, i called Maytag warranty service, which, inturn set up and appointment with A+E Factory Service, for a repair vist, this vist cost me 129.00. The tech. from A+E Factory Service told me, the machine would cost 630.00 in parts alone to repair. Not happy with that news, i recalled Maytag and was transferred to costumer service, they told me, that i could get the parts from them, at 530.00, i told them no. I'll buy another machine, it wron't be a Maytag, but i feel that one of their washing machines, not yet 5 years old, should run for many more years, without a break down of this magnitude and cost, to me, the consumer. Jennifer of Brunswick, MO October 1, 2009 I purchased a Maytag Neptune TL in August of 2006 from Lowe's in Columbia, Missouri. It immediately needed locks replaced; soon after, it needed the tub, gears, etc. replaced and the Maytag repairman came and repaired all the items. He stated that it was basically a 'rebuilt' machine now, and we shouldn't have any issues with it for a long time. Well, now it will not complete a wash cycle, and stops in the middle of any setting. I don't understand why Maytag would promote and sell such a product that needs so much repair. I have tried to troubleshoot problems rather than higher a repairman. While researching on the internet, I am finding that I am not, by far, the only one having problems. There are so many people with complaints on this machine, and I think that products should be designed to last, and last longer than a few months before needing the first round of repair. Thank you for taking my opinion, and I hope to receive a response from you, and/or Maytag. Nancy of Selden, NY September 26, 2009 In April 2005 we purchased the neptune top loader washer and dryer at a local Home Depot store. Exactly 3 months after this purchase we encounter our first problem with the washer locking sensor. Initially we contacted Home Depot about the problem. They informed us that the problem was a manufacturing problem and therefore, we needed to contact Maytag directly. We then contacted Maytag and reported the problem and were told that we would need to contact one of their technicians to have the problem fixed. Upon diagnosed, the techinician determined that the washer computer board needed to be replaced. A couple of months after the replacement of the washer computer board we again experiened another problem. By this time, we went back to Home Depot and told them that we wanted to return the washer. Home Depot told us that they couldn't take the product back because it was a manufacturing problem and that we needed to contact Maytag. Maytag refused to take the product back and informed us that they don't take products back but would have their technician fixed the problem again. Needless to say Maytag is not a consumer friendly company. Basically we got stuck with a defective product. We were given the run around and being bounced from one department to another and being put on hold for long periods of time with no resolution. It has now been 4 years since we purchased the washer and the computer board to the washer has been changed 3 times since then and the locking mechanism senser has been repaired 3 times. Every year during these 4 years we have had to contact Maytag for repairs on this washer. Every year since we bought the washer we have purchased an extended warrranty. Unfortunately, we did not renew our extended warranty on time for this year, 2009. By the time we were able to purchase the extended warranty on September 1st, my old warranty had expired. On September 21st, we contacted Maytag for service on the washer again. I was told that since my old warranty had expired before I renewed it, that there was a 60 day waiting period before my new contract would be effective on October 31, 2009. I was also informed that since this is a pre-existing problem, it would not be covered even when my extended warranty became effective. I explained to Maytag that this problem was the same problem that I have been having since I purchased the washer in 2005. I then was transferred to a supervisor in the Service Department. After explaining the situation to her, she suggested that since this was a manufacturing and recurrent problem that I should speak to the Manufacturing Department to see if they would take the product back. I informed her that I didn't see how that would be possible since I had already tried doing that 3 months after I purchased the product and Maytag didn't take it then. She gave me their phone number and suggested that atleast I give it a try and that it wouldn't hurt to ask. I then contacted the Manufacturing Department to no avail. I was informed that they would only fix the product and not take it back and basically told me that since I let the warranty lapse between the renewal of the new contract that I would be reponsible for fixing the washer on my own and that I would need to submit proof showing that the problem was fixed. Needless to say, I contacted a Maytag technician to come to my house and diagnose the problem. Turns out that the computer board has to be replaced once again. He proceeded to inform us that they have been having alot of problems with the Neptune washer computer boards. He also informed us that it would cost us 461.00 to replace the computer and that he would guarantee the computer for only 3 months. He said that they used to guarantee it for 1 year but it was changed to only 3 months. Well now we are stuck with a broken washer that keeps breaking down every year. Why isn't there a lemon law to protect consumers from companies like Maytag. There are alot of complaints against Maytag and yet they fail to compensate their customers. We will never ever purchase a Maytag product again. Vickie of Lafayette, IN September 26, 2009 We bought a Maytag Neptune washer & dryer in 2003, we now find out that the bearings are going out of my washer. As my husband & I are the only people in our home, I only do laundry for the two of us. I have taken very good care of this set, they still look showroom new. We chose Maytag with the belief that this would last through our retirement years. Now we are told that the repair will be well over 500.00, because the tool the repairman had to buy for this repair is around 1,000.00. I think if this was a known problem that Maytag should have had a recall & fix this with no charge to the consumer. Now we are going into retirement with a broken washer that we expected to last the rest of our lives. If I would have known that Maytag was not the quailty that it use to be, I would have chosen another brand. James of HOT SPRINGS NATIONAL PARK, AR September 25, 2009 We purchased a maytag front nepyune and dryer in Dec. of 2000. Did'nt have any problems until 2007. Thats when we had to have the circuit(mother) board replaced at a cost of just under 300. Now inJune of 2009 the machine would not spin. We had sears come in and they replaced the timer. When doing so the serviceman then tested it and popped the breaked. He then said that we needed a new starter and another piece that goes with it. We waited for over a month and was finally told they(sears ) could not find the part anywhere to fix the unit.We could not wait any longer so we went out and bought another washer as the cost of going to the laundry mat was getting expensive. To date we have a neptune sitting in the garage with a broken start button. Its hard to believe that a machine thats is 8 years old is obsolete for parts. Makes me feel that someone is trying to hide something from the public on these units. Dallas of Missoula, MT September 25, 2009 Bought a maytag washing machine 2 years ago and have had nothing but the same problems everyone else is having with it. Its a Maytag Neptune front load machine and I just payed 400.00 to have it repaired because they put faulty parts in them wich required me to have to replace a bunch of other parts because they all needed to match and work together in order to operate properly. My warranty says the motor is covered for 5 years and that was what went wrong but because the harness and controls only go with the new style replacemnt motor i had to by all of that also. It was their mistake by making the units faulty in the first place and I am so dissapointed with my original purchase. When I allready paid 1,700.00 for the washer and dryer expecting it to last more than 2 years Lisa of Mount Dora, FL September 24, 2009 I bought my Maytag Neptune front load washing machine 3 years ago. For the last 6 months every load I wash smells musty and I have to wash them again to try to get rid of the smell. I was not aware of any class action lawsuit because of a mold problem when I bought my washer. Had I known about it, I wouldn't have wasted 600 dollars on this washing machine. I did buy it at a scratch and dent sale so I didn't pay full price like other people. I will now have to buy a new washer so my family and I will have clean, nice smelling clothes to wear. I should not have to buy a new washing machine after only 3 years due to a problem I was not aware of. Save your money and do not buy a Maytag Neptune front load washing machine unless you want many headaches and clothes that smell horrible after you wash them. I will now be going out to spend money I do not have right now to buy another brand of washing machine. I really wish I would have found these complaints before I bought my expensive and smelly mistake. Joseph of Arlington Heights , IL September 21, 2009 Purchased a new washer and dryer in 2000. I was sent a extended warranty by Accent Amana.I paid and renewed these contracts my current contract is good until 12-26-2010. Once again the dryer doesn't work I call to set the appointment for repair and I am told that they already have invested more in the dryer than what I paid for the dryer and will not service it or replace it. What the hell kind of warranty is this as long as you don't use and they make money that's fine I bought it for protection against a poor product. These thind=gs are all scams they take your money and refuse to live up to thier end of the bargain. If the product is subpar it should have been replaced they claim the are not the manufacturer but they send all the stuff with Amana name slapped all over it leading you tyo believe you are purchasing a extended warranty from the manufacturer. This is BS they will not fix the machine or give me my money back what a scam this joint is and I have no idea if Amana is aware of them using thier name. What can I do I paid for this I expect my money back or my machine repaired . Chris McLenan of Framingham, MA September 19, 2009 We bought supposedly top of the line washer and dryer in 2006 and today the washer wouldn't spin and my clothes were locked in the washer. None of the helplines provided technical support and the first service appointment available was in 4 days. Harry of Carnegie, PA September 16, 2009 I purchased a Maytag Legacy Series washer in late July, 2008 from Home Depot. For the last few weeks, the washer has been making a loud, metallic banging sound during the wash, rinse, and spin cycles. To rule out the possibility of unbalanced loads, I ran the washer without any laundry items in the tub. The machine was also checked for level. I called Maytag's 800 number and was told that this was an "unusual" complaint and that there was no history of this noise being a widespread problem. The representative then informed me that Maytag may cover the cost of any defective parts, since the washer was so recently out of warranty, but any labor costs would not be covered. I thought perhaps that I was just unfortunate with this particular washer, then I came upon this website. This noisy operation must be well known to Maytag and they refuse to compensate purchasers for defective design and/or materials. Report Your Experience
