Maytag Settles Neptune Washer Lawsuit

It's way too late to do much good now but it may be some comfort to know that, back in 2005, Maytag settled a class action lawsuit covering two million homeowners who had trouble with their Maytag Neptune washers. But as the complaints below indicate, lots of problems remain.

Janet of South Euclid, OH October 31, 2009

We have been faithful Maytag users for three generations, with each washer and dryer lasting for at least 15-20 years. I got my new top loading Neptune washer in 2004. In the five years that I have had it I have had to replace the intake water valves two times since the water would not shut off causing it to overflow all over the floor. Also, the top of the washer has rust along the inside. Then, there is the matter of the smell that started about 2 years ago, so I cleaned it more often with bleach and now it smells like sewer water. My husband looked at it and took it apart. All parts have black mold on them and at the bottom of the tub was at least an inch of unknown matter.

We called maytag and asked them to send out a representative to look at this gross, smelly mess. They said "sorry, your washer is five years old. " They did not address the matter at all! They did not offer any customer satisfaction. So goodbye Maytag on the junk you sell.

Sandra of Joplin, MO October 30, 2009

I am extremely dissappointed in the product. My husband and I purchased the washer and dryer about 3 years ago thinking it was one of the best. The reason for this was I had a Maytag washer for over 30 years and had very few problems with it. It was still working when we purchased the new ones. Now less than 4 years later, it will cost at least 800.00 to repair the product and about 650.00 is in parts. I take good care of our appliances and this really irritates me that we trusted a product this much. Now I hear from a lot of people that they also had this product and had the same problem. My question is why were they not recalled? Every salesman and individual I have talked to says the product was junk. Yes we will purchase a new washer, after hearing the other horror stories about this product. I will not spend another 800 on repairs to have another problem with it. But I can assure you it will not be a Maytag, Whirlpool or Kenmore since it is my understanding they are all of the same and will not stand behind the product they are selling. What a piece of junk.

WALTER of BURLINGTON , NJ October 22, 2009

About four years ago my wife and I purchased a Maytag washing machine, Model # FAV6800AWW, along with the extended warranty.  This past September we started have problems with it. It stopped spinning. I called customer service and after several visits and several different parts were ordered, it was discovered that the part that I needed is not only not covered by the warranty, it's not even available.

Maytag does not supply the item any longer!  I wish I had known that when I first purchased this "high efficiency" washing machine. Sears charged me 138.08 to diagnois and fix the problem.

As I stated before, three different parts were ordered at different times. With each visit, I had to take time off from work. When they discovered they couldn't or wouldn't fix it, they told me they would refund me the money. The serviceman took back all the new parts and I have not been reimbursed.

Now I'm stuck with a 4 year old "top end" washer that can't be fixed and three less vacation days and I'm out of the overtime I could have worked on the days I had to be home to receive the repairman.

John of San Antonio, TX October 22, 2009

MAYTAG NEPTUNE. First, the lid locks failed and we could not open the lid. Now, during the extraction mode it sounds like the machine will explode. Noisy piece of garbage. Researching alternative washer. Will replace immediately. Tired of the repair bills.

Heather of Skiatook, OK October 21, 2009

I purchased my Washer and Dryer brand new on Sep. 26th, 2007... and since that date I have had to have someone come out and repair my washer THREE times the transmission has gone out all three service calls! Even the 800 number on the washer at the Maytag center, the several times I have called as had to extend warrienties on this appliance so they could have it repaired. The services man from Shelton Appliances with whom Maytag sets me up with everytime says that he has never seen an applaince have so many problems in two years, especially the transmission every time. I have a copy of the work orders and history of call made, they have been within 6 month of each call. I would like to know how Whirlpool plans on making this right to me has the costumer. It has been a very stressful and inconvientient matter. When you purchase something brand new, and spend your hard earned money you expect it to opperate properly!! Not have to be reapaired every 6 months in the past year. PlEASE MAKE THIS RIGHT! Dryer Model # MED5570TQ, Serial # MU2525538. Washer Model # MTW5570TQO, Serial # MCUO541712.

Gerry of Baltimore, MD October 20, 2009

I had a Maytag washer delivered Aug.7th and have been trying to get it repaired since Sept. 17th. The first company A & E never showed up and the second company that was sent Accurate Appliance came to my house Sept. 21st and told me it needed a new timer and it would take about four days. I tired, I cannot tell you how many times and left voice mail messages to return my calls without success. I called Maytag and also kept getting the run around and was told they also left messages in my behalf and also faxed them but did not receive an answer either. The supervisor they gave me to callis the Carlton at 866 64 7146. I talked to him and he was going to see what he could do now I cannot get him to answer either or return my calls. By the way this was a brand new washer that I purchased.

Patrick of Burlington Township, NJ October 20, 2009

Maytag Bravos Purchased in 2009 severe internal damage. Maytag replaced. October 2009 same model internal part damaged again. long delay in sending part to agent. agent tried to fix. part was defective. Wanted replacement model not part due to delay. Manager (Aaron) stated couldn't replace until 3rd time broken. Also lied about expediting part. didn't send claim form for damaged carpet. water damage. General disrespect for situation.

Without washer for 5 weeks. Laundromat charges. damage to carpets from water overflow. Economic result over 1000.00 not including fees to others for water use. Need Washer EVERY DAY due to special needs child.

Heidi of Burbank, CA October 19, 2009

Maytag Neptune, not sure of the year. Annual visit from the maytag repairman. Not so lonely anymore. The wash sounds like a jet engine in my den, THE MOLD, PEEEEWWWW. THEN THE COMPUTER JAMS AND YOU HAVE TO TAKE THE ENTIRE SOAP DISPENSER THINGY APART. Cannot watch TV when it is going due to the sound.

My local repairman said the Maytag quality has plummeted and he no longer recommends the products. He only repairs will not sell them, and he has supported Maytag products with his father for two generations. [Not good] TO BE A MAYTAG, AND THE REPAIRMAN, NOT SO LONELY ANY MORE.

Linda of Albuquerque , NM October 16, 2009

I purchased a Maytag Centenial washer & dryer in July - the "hand wash" cycle is a joke I truly cannot tell the difference between normal, delicate or hand wash - they sound the same and the clothers come out the same - wrinkled. I have had the store where I purchased the appliances come out - they say the cycle, starts, washes and stops as it should. I do not disagree - it is how my clothes come out that concerns me. I hate this washer.

Shelah of Kalispell, MT October 13, 2009

I bought a new Maytag w&d in 2008 THINKING I was buying like the OLD Maytag's were, a superior product! NOT EVEN! I HATE these worse than anything I've ever had! The dryer squeals and I've had a repairman out telling me that's just the way it is. The clothes come out of the washer in huge KNOTS and unless you spend the time shaking EACH ONE OUT, they'll come out of the dryer in a huge knot too!

Takes FOREVER to dry, several cycles! So I KNOW I'm not saving any energy with this unit! WORST investment I ever made! And people wonder why we Americans buy foreign products? Guaranteed my next W/D will NOT be American made either. UGH! DISGUSTED!
