Maytag Settles Neptune Washer Lawsuit

It's way too late to do much good now but it may be some comfort to know that, back in 2005, Maytag settled a class action lawsuit covering two million homeowners who had trouble with their Maytag Neptune washers. But as the complaints below indicate, lots of problems remain.

Glen of Vanceboro NC (02/05/06)
Got my postcard from Maytag about the lawsuit on the neptune washer. I stayed on the phone for hours trying to talk to someone about all the problems i've had. They kept switching me from one person to another, each time the other person had no knowledge of who i was or my problem. After several days of trying they gave me another # that was Maytag corporate. I first got Robin and explained that I had all repairs done with all the updated parts (wax motor, motor control, new motor, mold ring even a new timer I paid for that was not under suit,)

They all knew because they had my file, just like to hear me tell it.  I told her that it had smelled like smoke and quit again (Wax motor)  I said i would like to get a voucher for another washer.  She was going to call me back, I waited for 2 days no call.  I called back waited on hold for about an hour finally got Peggy, had to explain all over again I was told they had nothing to do with lawsuit but would offer me 400.00.

I said I read it was 500.00 -- she said that they had nothing to do with the lawsuit and if i didn't want that i would have to call another # to contact them and for me to have a good day.

Purchased a Maytag dishwasher #MDBTT5AWB from Lowes of Farmington, MO. and an extended service warranty. Paid with credit card. Dishwasher doesn't clean very well, have to pre-wash dishes by hand before loading. Pots and pans can't be cleaned in the dishwasher. The door latch is defective, the washer door will come open in mid-cycle, splashing scalding water in the room.

Clicked the handle to open the door during a cycle to add a drinking glass, waited a couple of seconds for the water to stop, then opened the door. Dishwasher started up when the door was fully open, splashing hot water all over me and the kitchen floor. My 1-yr-old grandson was in the room, but luckily wasn't hit by the water.

I called the number that Lowes gave us (a refrigerator magnet showing the number) for warranty service and was asked what the date was on our extended service policy, but I don't have any paperwork with that information. They said without a purchase date, they can't help me. Mastercard hasn't been any help in locating the purchase in our records, so I'm stuck with a crappy, dangerous appliance and a worthless extended warranty policy that can't be used.

Purchased a Maytag washer and Dryer in October 04. Spent a year in Italy. So washer was used approximately 6 months. Washer model SAV515DAWW started to leak water. We called an authorized Maytag repairman and were told it needed a Tripple lip Seal, an outer tub and a milk stool. I was told that Maytag was aware of the fact that this particular model had a defective lip seal and was replacing it with one that is not defective.

When I called Maytag they refused to admit any such thing. When repairman came to repair said unit he discovered that the machine also had a bad timer. The next day he returned with the timer but when he changed the timer he discovered that the motor was bad and replaced it. He charged me 218 for the labor saying the parts were under warrantee. I did my first load (I had over 10 loads backed up) but half way through the cycle I heard a loud sound and the smell of burning rubber. I called the repairman who came back to check it.

He said the transmission was bad and he would have to order the part but I should know that it would cost me close to another 400 to change it because it's a 4 hour job. So my top of the line Maytag washing machine with less then 6 months of use had to have: Tripple lip Seal, outer tub, milk stool, timer, new motor, and a transmission. Needless to say I called RC Willey and ordered a new washer and drier to be delivered the next day. I believe that their advertising with the repairman falling asleep constitutes false advertising.

By the way a couple of years ago I purchased a new Maytag dishwasher and had to replace the motor and pump three times within the first three months.

We purchased the Maytag Washer/Dryer complete set in November 26,2003 from a local Home Depot Center. Maytag S/N 11333682CR Model MAH55FLBWW A few months after having the washer we noticed some superficial mildew and an odor on our clothes. At this time we pulled the rubber seal back in the front of the washer and we were completely blown away by what we saw, black and orange mold everywhere. Shortly thereafter, I received the mailer about the problems with the washer. I mailed it in immediately and have not heard back from them.

I have called several times and stay on hold for over an hour at a time. I am reassured by all Maytag Customer Service reps that this is normal to have a wait of ONLY an hour. The last conversations that I had were that the settlement department was waiting on the third party to correctly enter all info in their systems before they can issue credits, but it's been a common problem for them to lose the information. Well, since I left off pursuing this my twin boys ( 2 years of age ) were hospitilized for unknown causes creating swelling and their skin to peal.

The only thing that's changed in our life is this washing machine is getting worse by the minute and this may be the cause of many sicknesses in my family. I no longer allow my wife to wash clothes in this machine because we are terrified that our children will be hospitalized again. Therefore, we have been going to the local laundry mat until this is resolved. All I am asking for is to return this washer to the Home Depot I bought it from and get credit toward a new one before my family suffers any more. If this cannot be resolved within the next few weeks I will have no other choice but to seek legal representation.

Ongoing mold problem. I wish we had known about this prior to August 2005 which the website indicates as the deadline for submitting complaints about this washer. We really like the washer...EXCEPT FOR THE ONGOING MOLD PROBLEM.
