Frigidaire, Kenmore Smooth-Top Ranges Recalled

R of Pflugerville, TX April 7, 2009

R of Pflugerville TX (04/07/09)
Purchased Kenmore Elite Oasis HE series canyon capacity washer and matching dryer (Mod #s 110.27072600 - washer, and 110.67072600 - dryer. Installers set machines in place, plugged in and attached dryer vent hose, then left. Drier wouldn't work; no power cord! Tried to use washer; it tripped circuit breakers three times. Behind washer, I saw a bunch of wires with exposed ends sticking out of the back of the machine. The bundle of wires were smashed between the control panel/top of machine and the tub portion. Called Sears to fix. They said power cords don't come with that dryer - you have to order one as an extra!

Two weeks later, repairman fixed washer (we bought our own power cord for dryer). Could no longer see wires and machine worked.... for 45 minutes, then circuit breakers tripped again. Called Sears to fix. FOUR weeks later, repairman could not fix - stated the problem was our home's electric wiring and I needed to hire an electrician (at my own expense). Hired master electrician next day. He tested everything from wall outlet to circuit breakers. Home is only five years old, and amps to outlet were more than ample for both machines. Problem, he states, is obviously the dryer. (I'd run my other dryer for 4 years on the same outlets with no problems.) Called Sears back and recounted electrician's feedback.

Sears said they stand behind their repairman's advice and would not fix under a warranty, but we could pay for a visit and repair (min. 300). I decided to call a local repair company, but both machines inexplicably started working without tripping the breakers within two days, so I canceled the service call. Within a month, dryer started beeping incessantly throughout drying cycle. This wasn't a big enough issue to me to try to fight with Sears customer service again, so we've been living with it. This week, the lid on the washer broke in that the door lock sensor is not locking the lid so the machine will cycle. It therefore won't run for more than five seconds. Contacted Sears. They will not repair as a warranty call; service call would be at my expense.

Did some research on Internet and learned that MANY people have had the same problems with their same model machines. Sears is well-aware of the issue and states that replacements parts are available for a total cost of about 650. New control/touch panel for dryer, new lock for washer, new lock sensor for washer, and replacement lid hinge that broke off completely due to rust (INSIDE the lid!). The way I see it, I bought what was represented as the top of the line washer and dryer from Sears, and from the day the set was installed, I've had constant electrical and electronic issues that have rendered the set useless to me. For the first two months I owned the set, I had less than one day of usable service.

Two years later, I am once again without a working set of laundry appliances. Sears is aware of the reasons, and they are common problems with these machines. I believe that should constitute a recall, or at least a permanent fix to the problems. Sears will not do this unless I pay them almost as much as one of the machines cost new.

Time without working machines has meant going to and paying for the local laundromat. At 15 loads per visit, we've made many visits. All with a new washer/dryer set sitting broken in our home. We've also had the expense of paying for an electrician, the long-term annoyance of only marginally-functioning machines, and the cost of the power cord that should have come with the dryer. Add in travel time, time away from home, time away from other projects and our jobs. This has been a huge inconvenience, and now we once again have to resort to the laundromat for an indefinite period of time until we can figure out how to fix the machines.

I want these machines replaced which is precisely what I demanded on several occasions from my first call to Sears when I saw the exposed electrical cords and had two machines that weren't working. Sears put me off until they no longer felt any responsibility to ONCE ensure we had the properly-working machines we'd paid for. I want them replaced now, since they have only gotten worse over time, and five minutes of Internet research revealed our issues are far too common for Sears to fail to respond with anything other than an offer to pay them hundreds of dollars more with no guarantee the machines will be fixed.

Our less than two-year old Kenmore Elite Oasis (#110.2703) washing machine kept getting an F 51 error message. Bad circuit board. Will be nearly 300 to fix. Ridiculous. This 800 unit replaced a 15 year old cheap (250) Roper that finally died. My service man (not a Sears technician) said this is generally a solid line but this was the first year for the top-loading model. Never buy year one.

300+ for repairs. If there is a class action case I want in. Unacceptable quality.

On March 8, 2008, Sears delivered a Kenmore front-loading washer and dryer. This completed a large appliance purchase since late January, totalling 6300, mostly in Kenmore appliances, from the Fredericksburg, VA store. Since about January 2009, I had noticed that the washer was really shaking when spinning -- far more than usual. Yet it was level. The troubleshooting section of the appliance manual said to not worry about it -- these washers make a lot of noise. So I did nothing.

On March 7, 2009, something broke inside the washer, leading to water draining out into the drainpan. I had not previously noticed that the horrible vibration had shifted the drainpain over and dislodged the caulking around the drainpipe, so all the water went onto the tile, then dripped through the ceiling into our garage. My husband had to remove a large chunk of drywall and insulation, let it dry, then replace it and repaint. Also around the garage door into the kitchen, as the water came down inside the wall. Fortunately, he owns a drywall company, so was able to fix it easily.

I was away from home from 6:30am to 7:30pm on Sunday, March 8, and we didn't realize that was the day the warranty expired. Once I got the kids to bed, I collapsed in bed myself (dance competition weekend). I submitted a service request at 8:15 a.m. on Monday, March 9, 8 hours after the warranty expired, even though the actual damage occurred within the warranty period. Any self-respecting company would extend the warranty 24 hours to satisfy a long-time customer, particularly one that purchased that many appliances from them.

I have gotten nothing but the runaround from Sears, and the bottom line is that they will give me 250 toward labor and materials. We will never purchase from Sears again, and we will urge all of our friends, relatives, and neighbors to also boycott Sears. My husband works for a major DC homebuilder, and he will recommend that they never consider Kenmore appliances if they ever change appliance manufacturers.

Repair: At least 1200 to repair a washer than originally cost 850. Drywall: Several sheets of drywall and insulation, plus labor.

I purchased a Kenmore Elite He3 front load washer 4 years ago. I have already had 3 service calls and spent over 200 to replace a door latch. I have now ben told that I am going to need to replace the control panels at a cost of over 600. I find this unacceptable for a 4 year old machine that I paid 964 for. I am very dissapointed with SEARS abd the Kenmore product line. That's the last purchase for me. No more running around and calling.

This has caused a financial burden, when I purchased the machine I thought that top quality should last for at least 10 or more years, my last machine lasted 13 years.
