Curves

Mariann of san marcos, CA September 17, 2009

After a 2 1/2 year battle with cancer my mom died in Tulsa Oklahoma on April 13, 2008. I live in San Diego & immeditely went to Tulsa to empty her apartment, tend to funeral arrangements & help my sister with any other things that needed to be done. On April 15, 2008 I went to Curves for Women in Tulsa & informed the gym owner of mom's passing & to cancel her membership. She told me mom did not join at that location but she would forward my handwritten letter to all Curves in the area & get this taken care of for me.

I returned to San Deigo & never thought again about Curves till recently. Evidently the membership was not cancelled & they continued to take 33.47 a month out of my dead mother's account. To date they owe me 534.99 & the corporate office in Waco, Texas will not help me recoup the funds from the club owner. I have called the club everyday for 3 weeks & faxed repeatedly everyday to have the owner call me. Finally he called me & offered a 3 month refund even though his policy is to do nothing.

Also the club owner did say that he will not cancel her membership till he gets a death certificate. What a JERK! I have hired an attorney to go after him & the corporation. Someone must stop thes people. This organization is miss leading & corupte. I have not been sleeping & now must endure finacial expenses to stop this unlawful act against the public.

Nancy of Muskegon, MI September 2, 2009

I held a membership at the Whitehall, MI Curves for a year. During this time, my knee was repetedly hurt and I had to stop working out. On March 17 2008 I gave written notice to end my membership. The franchise owner, Suzie, talked me into a 3 mo. medical haitus hoping I'd reconsider. That fall, I was away from home caring for my dying father. Suzie contacted my husband to say the 3 month haitus was ending. He believed that meant my option for continuing membership at the 34 rate was over and the request for cancellation would be in place. Suzie claims she warned that she would restart monthly charges. I have not been to Curves since March of 08. Since I was not at home or handling finances I did not notice that monthly fee charges had been started up again. I just found that I have paid for membership for the last year! Curves International says they have nothing to do with the problem. Suzie sold the franchise and the new owner can't repay my money. The new owner looked at my records and saw my letter, and offered free membership, but I have moved and still can't use half the machines. My friend who is still a member at that franchise had talked to Suzie about my inability to continue membership a long time ago. I believe that Suzie should have ended my membership, and took my money knowing full well I was not attending during the last year.

Linda of Lawrenceburg, KY July 18, 2009

I live in Lawrenceburg, less than a mile from this CURVES, but I work in Frankfort, KY. I am a member of the CURVES in Frankfort because it is very convenient for me. The CURVES in Lawrenceburg does not have convenient hours for my schedule. I worked out at the one in Lawrenceburg on a Saturday morning a few weeks ago with no problem. I was taking a weeks vacation from work and went to the Lawrenceburg facility again on a Saturday morning and the owner told me I could not work out with my travel pass. Her CURVES is now a 24/7 facility and only 'Certified' members can work out there.

I was alway told that if you have a travel pass you could work out at any CURVES location. Apparently this is not true since they are all privately owned/operated. The owners can make up any rules they want. I called my Curves and ask about it, and was told it really is up to the owners. I know CURVES have district managers. There should be some type of guidelines for operation that everyone follows. If you think you are going to work out when you travel or just taking time off work, you better call ahead and see if they will let you.

#1. Knowing so many germs get passed thru touching handles on machines ,,we requested hand santitizer (type you put one pump into hands and don't have to rinse off) The owner did not want to provide this ,,,so a member bought large bottle at wal mart and brought it to curves and put on table for all to use. The owner took the bottle and broke the pump off it and threw it away . Said she didn't want any in establishment. How rude !!!!

#2. We got the new stretch machine and they put the little mats in closet and said we couldn't use them anymore. I love the machine and use it but also still like to do extra stretches on the floor . They did eventually put the mats back out . Good for them.

#3.I have gone to this curves since it opened and love it ,,,when they went to the smart machines card system ,,they wanted me to pay 15 more dollars per month for it . I asked to be grandfathered into the new system and even said I'd pay a one time up front cost but keep my monthly rates as is. I was rudely turned down and treated badly over my even asking .

#4. Since I have been going to curves since it opened ,,I was shown how to do an advanced workout . I like doing the advanced workout ,,,but NOW they tell me I can't do it that way anymore . I never hold up anyone behind me. I am always sure of that. They tell me its not safe to do it . BUT IT WAS FOR YEARS now because of the smart card system they say its not safe???? They want me to pay the extra 15 dollars per month . So now I don't do the advanced regular workout . I feel I am being mistreated . Sometimes think of quitting curves .

Mary of Kenmore, WA June 7, 2009

I joined Curves in 2002 at which time I signed a contract allowing them to deduct the monthly fee of 31.55 from my checkbook. In 2004 I developed numerous medical problems and my doctor wrote a note stating that I needed to refrain from exercising until further notice at which time Curves was to stop deducting money from my account. Several weeks later I mailed a handwritten note to Curves stating I was cancelling my membership due to health reason. I recently discovered that Curves has been deducting the monthly membership from my account since that time. 1.5 years ago the original owner sold the membership and the new owner says she's not responsible and it's my fault for not keeping up on my bank account.

I went over to the club that I originally joined and asked the women who was working there to show me my paper file. In it they had my doctor's note but no copy of the letter I'd sent to them cancelling my membership. I then asked to see the electronic file on me and it showed me as cancelled membership but next to it there was a date of June 2009. It also showed that I had not been to the club since February 2004. Curves never made any attempt to contact me over the years only kept taking my money.

Pierre of La Plata, MD June 2, 2009

I am writing this letter as a formal complaint, and a demand that Curves of La Plata repay my banking account for monies erroneously removed from my banking account, after notifying that establishment that I was ending my wife’s membership there. That notification was made in October of 2008, at which time Curves agreed to stop the automatic debits from my checking account. Well, that never happened. They continued to debit my account, and I was forced to send a certified letter to their establishment, requesting a refund. Four payments were deducted without my approval, and the owner of the business never responded to messages or correspondence. In addition, I have driven to their site several times, and spoke with representatives who apologized to me for not being treated fairly and professionally. The debits stopped for a few months, and then out of nowhere, another debit to my checking account was made by Curves of La Plata in May 2009. I would advise anyone interested in possibly obtaining a membership from that organization not to do so.

Gail of Jacksonville , FL April 27, 2009

Friday, Apr 24 2009 I signed up for a Fitness Study at Curves - an Avon sponsored program. I gave them my credit card to pay 34.00 for the program and scheduled my return visit for Monday, April 27, 2009.

After leaving their facility and thinking about the program, I decided it wasn't for me. I tried to call them on Sat. April 28 & Sun April 29 to tell I decided not to join - but I only got their telephone answering machine. I didn't want to leave a message so I called back at 8AM on Monday, April 27 and spoke to Amber. She told me that I would have to speake to Simone the owner. I left a message for Simone to call me - but she did not. I called again at approximately 3PM to tell Simone about my mind change. My credit card had not been charged the 34. at that time. Simone told me that my paperwork had been processed and that I could not get out of it. Simone refused to let me out of the financial commitment and charged my card.

Virginia of Cedar Park, TX April 9, 2009

Virginia of Cedar Park TX (04/09/09)
I stopped using Curves over one year ago. I told them I was moving and they told me just to bring a letter by, which I did. I dropped it off the day before I actually started moving. They continued to take membership money out of my account for almost a year. They knew I had moved. They knew I was NOT using their facility and still kept charging me. I finally had to close my bank account completely to get them to stop.

The took almost 500 out of my account that I cannot afford! I recently found a woman's purse in a WalMart parking lot. It had a lot of money in it. I found the woman and returned her purse, money in tact. Curves got my purse and said, TOO BAD, It's our money now! UNETHICAL, CHEATS.. I wish someone could file a class action to MAKE them pay. I asked the BBB and they were willing to go to arbitration but it's going to cost ME 70 to do this! Ridiculous! It's like throwing good money after bad to pay them to arbitrate what should have already happened if the owners of Curves had ANY sense of ETHICS.
