Ethan Allen

Lee of Norwalk, CT January 3, 2009

Lee of Norwalk CT (01/03/09)
I used to work for Ethan Allen as an Interior Designer in Danbury, CT. The pressure to sell was terrible, and age discrimination was evident. They treated their workers like cattle. The philosophy was to hire someone keep them two year and then dump them. Also, it was very difficult to keep your job with them if you were over 55. I had a great month, selling over 200,00 in furniture. I was acknowledged at the sales meeting as a top salesman. The next month I was fired.

Duing a short period of time oin 1993-95 sales staff over 55 were fired. I lost my health insurance and had to sell my home because I could no longer make the mortage payments.

On July 22, 2008, I took delivery of two power recliners, which I bough at the Ethan Allen Showroom on Clairemont Mesa Blvd, in San Diego, CA. Because both my husband and I have mobility problems, the purchase of the power recliners was very important. On December 6, 2008, I was alone in the house and in anticipating retiring was unable to get up and out of the recliner because it would not function. The time of day was nearly midnight, and I needed to summon help to get out of the chair.

I called the local store Monday, December 8, 2008, to request service. A service representative came December 11, 2008, only to determine that, in fact, both the recliners were not functioning, and he would need to order new transformers to repair the chairs. Please understand that at the moment we have one inoperable recliner in the reclined position and one recliner that functions as a nice leather chair.

A young woman from Ethan Allen called December 12, 2008 to tell me she had ordered the transformers and they might be here by the middle of January, 2009. A month to get the needed parts from the warehouse in the east!. One could put the parts in a United States Postal Service priority mail package and get it to San Diego two days later at a cost of only 8.00. You may have surmised that I am extremely dissatisfied with the current situation. I think this is very poor service from Ethan Allen. Please understand this is most inconvenient during the holiday season.

Jeanette of New York, NY December 22, 2008

In August2008 I ordered a chair and ottoman. After two weeks, I noticed that the fabric was rippling on both the chair cushion and the ottoman. I called and it was picked up three weeks later. It cam e back in the same condition three weeks later, and still need to go back to be repaired. the man that pick it up said he saw the problems and took pictures.

Ethan Allen decides that they really don't see the problem in the pictures and says that if i want to change the fabric i would only be charged their charge. This chair and ottoman have gone back and forth more than 5 times and it is five months later. The fabric is defective and the company could care less. It seems that once they have your money they could not care less about thier product.

As of today, only the chair is in the house, with the ottoman going back to be repaired. Not only was their fabric defective, but their cushions were not filled and the corners of the cushions were empty! This is really a disgrace. This item cost me 2400.00. In addition, i purchased a chest that could not be picked up till December 19, 2008. So on Dec. 21, 2008 I called to tell them that I needed delivery and they told me they will not deliver to the city.

This is adding isult to injury. They are a horrible company. I was told that they could deliver to the city, ad the charge would be 150.00, now they are no able to do that. I told them I could not take the item, and they said i could not get a refund!!!! how about that????? Can't amke this stuff up!

DO NOT WALK IN THEIR STORE, YOU WILL SAVE YOURSELF ALOT OF MONEY AND FRUSTRATION! I purchased a kitchen table with 6 chairs in style New Country, September 17th/08. I gave my deposit and waited for my furniture. Then in the mail I recieved a copy of the contract that I supposedly forgot to sign and was asked to sign it and mail it back to them. I didn't recall this being discussed with me so I didn't send it back. (This is where they state you must pay for your order in full prior to it being delivered.)

After 6 weeks our furniture was in and we waited for Delivery to call, they didn't call so after a week or so, we called them, we were told we would have to drive in a give them the full balance owing or they would not deliver. My husband talked to the manager and said that when the furniture was delivered we would pay in full, they delivered it that day. When the Delivery man came to the door before he even opened the back of the truck he told us one of the chairs are cracked! So they had to have known this when they put them on the truck. I told them not to bother bringing it in.

Everything else was brought in and we found another cracked chair and on the one table cracked brackets. Today I called to talk to the manager about the product as we now have another cracked armchair which is less than a month old,and the poor custumer service we have recieved only to be put on hold 5 times!!!! I was told I wouldn't be able to talk to the manager as she was not in and seldom can be reached. I would be put through to voice mail or email. This is brandnew furniture, which is garbage.

Also I asked for a quote on some kitchen curtains and front door/side light when I ordered the fabric for the chairs and waited 6 weeks for the quote. I needed 18 yards 53. a yard for cafe styled curtains that came in at 950.00 and that didnt' include labour 672.00 and hardware 400.00 and installation of 200.00! I was stunned, I actually found curtains, made of the same fabric which were finished and to the floor for 40.00 at a local store!I'm happy to say that I declined this order! I am still waiting for my 2 chairs to be delivered, and my one armchair to be replaced and the bracket fixed on the table. This order was placed in September 17........it's Dec. 17. I am still without a full kitchen set and doubt I will have an entire set before the end of January or they are closed and out of business. Shop anywhere but here!

Adam of Brooklyn, NY December 8, 2008

The finish on the 2500 leather sofa I bought started sloughing off a year after I bought it. The store (Garden City) would not talk to me about it but pushed me off to Customer Service. After 3 months of leaving messages (they will not call you!) EA inspected the thing and agreed to replace it. I ordered a new sofa. Months went by. Then I am told what I want is no longer available. I wrote them to ask for a refund and the got back to me another month later to say the person I was working with is no longer there.

SQUARE ONE. Ethan Allen is, to my mind, a sham company that sells average furniture and DOES NOT CARE ABOUT YOU once you sign the check. Those friendly people who sold you the stuff? They won't even talk to you if you have a problem. They don't even want you in the store. When I went back to the showroom the words defective product were scarce out of my mouth before the manager was subtly herding me toward the door and telling me I had to call customer service. Deal with just about any other company before you pay big bucks to these frauds.
