Springleaf Financial Services (formerly American General Finance)

Consumer Complaints & Reviews

You people sent me a letter last year and told me that I was ahead in my payments and could take some time off. So last October, November and December, I decided to take you up on your offer. Now I found out that you reported me to the credit companies and now I have bad credit. You people need to call me and set this straight.

I took out a loan with American General Rip-off Financial, now Springleaf, because of all their unethical tactics. I got laid off. They put a small claims suit against me. I acquired a job, they started garnishing my checks. Mind you, my bankruptcy is paid for in full and they are included in it. They haven't taken the collateral I put up, and now my debit card has been declined, because they have a hold on my checking account. Anyone that is thinking about taking out a loan with this company, don't. They will ruin your lives. I have four kids, no money to my name now. Their attorneys, Krisor and Associates in South Bend, Indiana will back them to the fullest.

Things happen in people's lives to where you are unable to make your payments to your creditors. The garnishment from my paychecks is understandable. But taking all the money I have to my name in my checking account, after they take money from my employer, is just downright selfish of this company and their so called lawyers. I will be making a website about Springleaf and Krisor and Associates telling my story and uploading all my documents. American General repossessed my truck before it went to small claims. They lied about the total amount to regain possession of my vehicle. Then gave me a cheesy receipt with the dollar amount "blacked out with marker" to make me believe the total amount paid to the towing company "bower towing". So much anger towards two companies for unethical business practices. This company needs to be stopped. The people that work for them are just as bad as the administrators of the company.

CareOne has been making payments to this company on my behalf since February 2010. My balance was $4958. As of April 2012, I have paid a total of $6044. I was very upset to find out that the collection agency stated that I owe $3051.08. The lady told me on the phone that they started receiving payments June 2011. My account is **. I even sent a certified letter to the address provided on my credit report: Evansville ACCT RE 600 N Royal ave, Evansville, IN 47715 and did not receive a response. I need someone to contact me as soon as possible to clear this up. At this time, I will not make another payment until all my payments are applied to my account. Thank you.

Springleaf broke the law! I deployed to Iraq in 2010 and Springleaf illegally foreclosed on my home while I was away with the army. This is a violation of the Soldiers' Civil Relief Act. I am getting an attorney and suing them for damages as they auctioned my home for approximately 33% of the value and then put it on my credit report. These folks are criminals.

My husband lost his job in year 2010 and I have very serious medical problems which I have to have treatment three times a week. I do work but my hours were cut down to 32 a week. We could not get (previously American General) Springleaf Financial to work with us. We were current on our payments until all this happened. We got two months behind and then the harassment started with Springleaf. They would call me at work/home/cell, come by my house and they would do my husband the same way.

They told us if we became current, they would work with us by lowering our interest rate, so we could get our balance lower and soon pay off. I have come to the conclusion that they don't want you to pay off the loan and keep charging interest. They refuse to work with us when we became current on payments. So, they filed court charges against us and now want to garnish my wages at 25% each paycheck. My husband continues to look for work and do odd jobs as they come along. He can't find a company to pay him what he was previously making, so he has to do what he can. Please do not do any business with Springleaf. They changed their name from American General because of all the negative feedback right before ex-president Bush left office.

So I just found out that this company wishes to throw a little old lady out onto the streets. They refused to work with her and are trying to take the house. She's been in and out of the hospital, and whenever someone would try to pay her bill, they refused the money, telling whoever was trying to pay that they could not because only her name was on the records. I came to find out that even though they had the house and got it on auction, I read on sites and in books that this wasn't allowed and was against the law. So yes, it seems they are getting away with it. So what's to happen to this sweet old lady now? Anyone care to help? She was in a bankruptcy, and that should have stopped the foreclosure. But according to them, they still want the house and are ordering her to pay $188k. Does this seem fair to this little old lady?

Foreclosure 03/8/2012 began on ** property sold at an auction on 03/29/2012. Personal property moving began 04/08/2012. The new owner closed on 04/26/2012. Filed felony charges 04/25/2012 for removal of dryer, stove, and other personal properties before closing. Springleaf claims that the closing papers stated that home to go as is. The previous homeowner was not able to retrieve the remainder of personal property and charged with robbery. I returned the stove and dryer but on 05/03/2012, returned to outside of the home to obtain the remaining personal property, finding some items missing. What happened to the rest of my personal property? Do I not have any rights?! Also, Springleaf failed to mail a notice of foreclosure to me as partial owner in the mortgage, and property tax deeds.

I have had my loan for $4,700 for 2 years with a couple payments to go. I am on SS, so I pay when my check is direct deposited. I made my payment by phone on April 25 and repeated my account numbers back to the rep on the phone as usual. I checked my check account today on 5/2, the payment was still not through so I called to see if there was a problem and was told that my payment did not go through due to NSF and I owed an additional $30.00 NSF + $10.00 late fee + the payment. I complained first to the rep and was told I needed to pay it, not their fault, the bank returned so I owe. I asked to talk to a manager and he told me I had to show proof from my bank. I called my bank, no payment ever came through and if it had, it would have been paid as I have OD protection. They are sending me the info to pass on. All I can say is once they are paid off next month, I will never do business with them again. Very poor customer service. They need to treat people better!

Well, my ex-husband and I did a loan with American General Financial about 10 years ago and I didn't have any problems or issues with them. They pretty much paid off our credit card bills and we just paid them back, but I must say that it was great to get that payment over with.

I was approved for a loan of $5,000 through this agent named Simpson. Then they asked me to put the first payment on a MoneyPak card through Walgreens for $220.00 and to call them back with the number on the back of the MoneyPak once I scratch it off. I did that and then this account manager named Julie ** asked me to do another payment using another MoneyPak for $400.00 and call them back with the scratch off number on the back of the MoneyPak as soon as possible. Ms. ** promised I would receive another $500.00 to my loan, totaling $5,500.00. She took my bank info, including my routing number and account number. I never received my loan and the phone number is always busy.

I was working with this company (Springleaf Financial Services) American General Finance to resolve the balance on my credit report of $707. I paid the amount of $707. And this company resubmitting to the credit bureau separately, an additional amount after they stated in writing that the amount on the credit report was accurate and correct. I called to mention this to the company, and they threatened me to pay an additional $379. Please help. This company is bullying after an agreement to get more money, and reporting incorrect information on my credit report. I have never had a creditor revise any additional fees after an agreement. If you have any question please contact me or email me.

I had two loans last year with Springleaf. I paid them in full and had great credit with them. I have had two calls this month where they were soliciting loans. They left messages that I could borrow $2,000 the same day. Then I received a mailing telling me that I am a preferred customer and I could borrow $5,000. So, I submitted an application online. It was referred to the branch. The next day at 10am, I called and spoke to Steven **, the same guy who was calling me about a loan. They said they would call me when they had some news on the loan. I never received a call.

The next day, I called at 9:30am and the secretary said she would give the message to Steven. She called me back in one hour and said their new policy was someone with two bankruptcies could not get a loan. I thought that was strange so I proceeded to call another office. They said that was always their policy so they were confused why I even got a loan. They took my information and ran my credit again even though Kristen said it was only a soft hit which was not true. Again, she was supposed to call me when they got an answer back. I called twice that day. At 4:55pm, Kristen had me on hold for four minutes and she said I was declined, but she could not give me a reason. Isn't that against the law? I have seen many complaints on this company. I want to make this known to whoever may be thinking about doing business with this company.

My family and I have already been stressed since the passing of our mother on January 2009. We are trying to take care of her estate for inheritance tax purposes. The City of Harrisburg is requesting a copy of the balance of her property located on ** Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The woman Cherly at the Cheltenham Branch provided us with a verbal quote of the balance. However, this is not sufficient. They need a copy, some sort of documentation. Cherly said she can't send it to us. I said I will come and get it. Again, Cherly said she cannot give us a copy. Why? She said because she can't. I asked her if she had printer and paper. She said yes. So I said then print it out. She again said she can't.

This is very frustrating. Now, we cannot take care of our business with Harrisburg. This is unacceptable and maybe even be illegal! If I don't get any results within a week, my family and I will be consulting an attorney!

In 2003, I borrowed $1500 from American General, now Springleaf Financial. I was making payments faithfully and I did get the loan down to $400 and then the economy got the best of me and I had to file a chapter 13. My case was dismissed but American General got most of their money. Now in 2012, I start receiving harassing calls telling me that I owe them $5000. I asked them how I managed to wind up owing them this amount and they told me that the loan sat in bankruptcy for all of those years and accrued interest. I explained to them that I am on a fixed income and they said that the calls would keep coming until a payment for 5 grand was made to pay off the loan. They told me that they didn't care how many times and what time of day they had to call they would still call. I cannot pay or will not pay this huge payment that they want me to pay. I thought that this loan should have been taken out of the system. I cannot take these calls anymore and I am really tired of this company.

I received my final bill from Springleaf with a balance of $16.75 on my account. I paid the amount and expected to get paid in full later. Instead, I started to get phone calls. The voice mails were speaking about paying a fee for a bounced check in January 2009. Today, I got to answer the call before it went to a voice mail. The guy stated to talk about my paying this. I asked him to send me something showing that I owe the money, and he stated that they don't send that kind of document. I asked what his basis was that I owe money, and he stated that it was from voice mails that I never responded to in February 2009.

Since 2009, I've spoken to that office no less than 10 times, mostly when they wanted to lend me more money, but I have talked to them directly about my account with this never mentioned. I told him I wanted proof of their accounting error, which this would be, since it wasn't included in my balance. He got angry, because I wasn't backing down; and then I hung up.

I have had a loan with American General (now Springleaf Financial) for a few years. I have just recently, due to financial issues, got 1 month behind in my payments. My fiance gave me the money to pay my account off in full. I paid them a payment of $2000 and then the final $2914, and I obtained confirmation numbers, finalizing the deal.

I monitored my checking account, and when I saw that only the payment for $2914 came out, I called Springleaf to see what was going on. Customer service researched my issue and found out that the $2000 payment did not go through due to wrong account information being entered. After I remembered verifying my account information with the customer service person, she told me that it would take 10 days for the branch to get back the information on my account that was entered wrong and that I would have to wait those 10 days in order to pay the $2000 needed to pay this bill out. I told her that would be fine as long as they did not charge me any interest since it was not my error that created this situation. She said that she could not stop the interest.

My fiance had words with her and asked her to have her manager call me. The manager explained the interest could not be stopped but that when they get this information back from their corporate branch in 10 days, she would remove the late fee and the returned check fee. First of all, it is not my fault that customer service entered my information wrong and you want to charge me a returned check fee? I just want to pay this bill off, but if their fee adds up to more than $2000, then I will be filing a claim with the Better Business Bureau. This is very unfair. People these days are not trying to pay off bills; they are just trying to survive.

Adding an additional $1,800.00 in finance fees - I transferred all my debt (HSBC/Chase/American General aka: Springleaf) to a debt consolidation company, Care One. After 3.5 years of paying off what Springleaf initially agreed to have my $2,700.00 debt with them completed, they then contacted a collection agency and said that I still owed them over $1,800.00. My initial loan was for $2,700.00, I paid them $3,400.00 through Care One, and they still demand another $1,800.00, which means that once they took the initial payments, they must have increased the interest rate to triple what it was supposed to be from their original contract with me, that I still have.

Keep in mind, that they made no mention of this issue with Care One, or me until the end of my payments to them through Care One. They are a lying, thieving organization and since they are a sister company of AIG, I am not surprised. After reading the complaints, I see that they have done this to many other citizens. I have asked for help from lawyers to no avail. In the meantime, this outstanding $1,800.00 is on my credit report.

Springleaf needs to be investigated at the federal level. I feel that it is completely ridiculous that in this economy, people like me, who struggled to get out of debt, now have no recourse whatsoever because of huge corporate 100% greedy, lying, and completely corrupt companies like Springleaf, who are consistently allowed to operate at the manipulative levels that they are allowed, with no consequences for their actions.

The consequences are that I'm not giving them another dime of my money. I followed through on my end of the contract for nearly 4 years, and they decided to ignore the contract with both myself and with Care One. They are completely without any business ethics and should be investigated accordingly. I'm sure they're raking in the billions from suckering their former clients. I refuse to be one of them.

Listen and listen good. I took a loan from your organization with an agreement to pay back in a window of time. During this period, I received a letter to pay up the loan in full and saved interest. My wife did so. After this, I received a communication that my account was paid in full. Now, many years later, my TRWs reflect that I am a bad risk. Your organization failed to provide what ever information to the credit bureaus that the loan was paid up before the contract date. Because of your lack of professionalism, my life is ruined. My next step, if I don't hear from you with the resolve, is to notify the Better Business Bureau of your incompetence in this matter. I want my credit to reflect that I paid you off before time and removed from records. I am not threatening you in any fashion. I am just advising you for the 2nd time: fix it!

I fell behind with my payment and spoke with a loan administrator to work some things out. She was more than willing to do so. A few days later, I started receiving rude and threatening calls from someone named Brandon and house visits from someone my roommates said was named Dawn. Rude to the extent of saying "be a real man and call me back!" or "you need to surrender the items or I will have to proceed with legal action". I understand that I was behind, but the magnitude of the rudeness to myself and my roommates is so tacky and uncalled for.

I borrowed $8,000.00 and made my payments of $345.00 faithfully for almost a year and went in paid off. So I decided to ask for another loan of $5000.00 for some little medical bills and small bills. So they told me no problem, we'll be happy to do that for a good customer. They always make it sound like it's not a problem. Well it is, they didn't say anything about a vehicle to finance. I asked for a personal loan, so it just made me mad. When they say one thing, they do something different. If I knew they were going to do that, I wouldn't paid them off. So Modesto, CA. financial will get no more of my business and from a lot of other people too. It will be in other papers in CA.

I borrowed $3,000 from Springleaf Financial to pay off a credit card. My payments were set at $170 a month. A few months after getting the loan, I was hit with a $2,400 federal tax debt. I explained to Springleaf Financial what had happened and they lowered my monthly payment to $100. After making one payment of $100, my fianc lost her job at Edward Jones. Once again, I called Springleaf Financial to let them know what had happened and that I could only make $50 monthly payments for a few months, but that I have a loan with my financial institution that will be paid off soon. (I thought my last payment was April 1, 2012, but it was actually just paid off on March 1st.)

Therefore, I can start making $50 bi-weekly payments starting March 16, 2012, which will be the $100 a month originally agreed upon. Even though I have never tried to avoid any calls or my responsibility to pay my bill, Springleaf has shut me off from making online payments and I have been making $25 bi-weekly payments by mail ($50 a month). Now, there has been a court date set for March 13th. I do not understand the reasoning for this, since I have always done my best at trying to work with these people. What's the purpose of going to court, when I can start making my agreed upon $100 payments 3 days after the court date?

On February 28, 2012, I was contacted about my mom's loan that I took care of and stated to them that I already mailed my payment. They said that their corporate office would not process it on time and they are coming to repossess my vehicle if I did not make another payment by phone right then and there. I stated that there was no money in the account to cover a double payment and the gentleman says, "I'm sorry that you're a low life who can't pay bills." I stated, "I mailed my payment. So why are you talking to me like this?" He says, I can give to ** if you mailed your payment. I'm coming to get the truck and garnish your mother's wages," and hung the phone up on me. I have never been talked to like that and I have had loans with them for almost 6 years now.

I took a loan out for 3K and have always made my payments on time. Job change came up and I got a little behind on paying my payments by just a couple of weeks later than the actual due date. They started calling 2 days before it was even due yet, harassing me and asking to make sure payment will be on time and every day, at least 10 times a day, until payment was made. They actually showed up at our doorstep when the payment was only 5 days late. I call that harassment and it should be illegal. Their interest rates are outrageous and when their approach is disgusting, I would never recommend this company to anyone no matter how desperate they may be.

I worked for them on and off for 14 years. I was fresh out of prison after 6 years. They didn't care. It got to where I was only given accounts that were 4 months or older and told to harass and repo with prejudice, which means do anything I could to destroy the life of the clients. Parents, children, friends, and co-workers were all given the green light. I was paid an average of $90k a year as a sub-contractor. I am now 50 years old and it's been almost 10 years. I can only hang my head in shame and ask forgiveness. For the last 10 years since I left that lifestyle I have dedicated myself to helping people in my community to dealing with finance companies' **. My best advice is read the Fair Debt Collection Act even the short version. Get aggressive back; look outside the box. Follow them. Stop at the same stores as the managers. Meet them in the doorways and if they say anything to you tell them off loudly, they can't take embarrassment. Go on the offensive. Get in their face. Good luck and remember they have unlimited funds to fight you with, so make it hurt.

Due to unavoidable circumstances, we became a few months behind on our home loan through Springleaf Financial in Lake City, FL. I wanted to make two payment of $350.00 each to catch it up, but we received paperwork from Martha ** via mail, suggesting we apply for a loan modification. We decided this would be the best thing for us at the time, since we were going through some financial difficulty. I filled out all the paperwork, and gathered all the required documentation that was requested, and turned it in to Martha by the due date. Four weeks went by, before I received a call from Martha, stating there was a document missing that was needed for the process to be complete. She said the name of the paper, which was unfamiliar to me, and when I asked her what it was, her response was, "I have no idea". This woman was doing a modification on our loan, yet she didn't even know what papers she was requesting from me, and I found this a bit odd.

I finally figured out on my own, that it was a paper from our income taxes, which was page 3 on the taxes, so obviously she lost it, because I gave her the whole pack. I made a copy of the paper she needed, and brought it to her. Two more weeks went by, before I received another call from her. She said we were denied the modification, because the payment was less than 1/3 of our income. I asked her why she didn't tell us it needed to be less than 1/3 of our income in the first place, and she said she didn't know that information at the time. At this point, I felt as if this was her first time even doing a modification, and she is the office supervisor. She was supposed to be trying to help us, and all she did was hurt us financially, because she had no knowledge of what she was doing. Had we known that in the beginning, we would never have applied for it. So, now that another month and a half went by, we now owed almost $1,000, and she said we needed to pay it within a week to avoid foreclosure. This was at the end of November. We could not come up with $1000.00 in one week, so we knew we were in trouble.

During the month of December we received a demand letter from a lawyer, demanding $1,252.92 to be paid by the middle of January, to avoid the foreclosure process. After that, we also received a letter from Springleaf, which I still have, stating that we were denied the modification, because we didn't turn in all the paperwork. This contradicts what we were told over the phone, and I did turn in all the paperwork on time. This company is full of discrepancies, and this woman has no knowledge of how to do a modification. She told us to prove as much income as possible, to have better chances of getting the modification. Now that we finally have our income tax money and can pay a lump sum, we are expected to pay $2,037.20 by next week. This is due to all the months of payments they kept adding on plus a $500.00 in legal fees.

This process was not done correctly, or with any amount of accuracy, and the expectations of us as of now are unjust. The Lake City, Fl Springleaf Financial branch should be investigated, as well as Martha's ability to be the office supervisor, to avoid this happening to other consumers. We are not trying to get out of paying on our loan, but the best option for us was bypassed, because of the unprofessional business and false hope that was proceeded by this company. They also advertise on their website two other options for delinquent accounts, a Repayment Plan and a Cure Plan, neither of which were offered to us.

They still processed the loan after I told them I didn't want the loan. When I didn't take the loan, they put it in as a denial, which affects my credit score. Then without my wife's permission, they ran her information and sent her a denial letter, which affected her credit score. She's furious her credit score dropped considerably.

They did not send my tax document for the interest I paid for in 2011. I called about it and told them to fax it to me, but I have not received it yet.

I had drop off a payment on 12/15/2011 in their drop off box and I had just left my family's Christmas party. Springleaf hired the worst towing company in the world. They towed my truck and didn't give the option to get my kid's Christmas gifts out. They didn't give me a repossession notice until three days later.

The next after they towed my truck, they had it up for auction. They rip my license plates off were I had to buy new one. All of our Christmas gifts were stolen. 3 of my credit card all of my charge personally. I think Springleaf is heartless because they ruin my kid's Christmas. The driver was riding around with my wallet in his vehicle, so unprofessional.

I really hate this company and can't wait to pay them off. I wouldn't recommend a dog to them. A two hundred payment ended up being 1,000 dollars. Wow, this company I really don't have anything good to say. It's been a living nightmare and I still haven't got my items back. You think they care? ** no!

I have used them since I was 18 years old and have had a high credit limit of $5000. When me and my ex husband decided to separate, they were playing both sides, giving him information and harassing me. Remind you that he has never paid any of his loans off and had to charge off his recent account in which he blames me when he refused to pay because he didn't want me to have a motorcycle that was used as collateral, in which he told a representative from the branch it wasn't. They helped him try to take out papers against me so I wouldn't get the bike that was repo because he would sign over the title.

He doesn't pay any of his debts and I do. They would call and threatened to send the police to my job in which I hired a lawyer to settle it. I have a better motorcycle and it was their loss, not mine. They called every place of employment, trying to give me a bad reputation especially Denise at the branch in Shelby! I will no longer deal with them ever again or send anyone to them. They were very unprofessional in the entire ordeal.

I have loan documents stamped paid in full and dated from 3 years ago. Loan is showing past due on my credit report. I'm trying to buy a home and this is screwing me over. My calls were not returned. I'm going to burn their butts with a lawyer.
