I rented a Firefly car at Orlando airport, and explicitly turned down an offer at the check-in desk to use the PlatePass. I told them that I am not interested and I will pay cash, but the clerk insisted that the pass is in the car and I can use it when I don't want to pay cash. I, in fact, paid cash at every toll I passed, passing at cash only lanes, but to my surprise, two weeks later I got a 20 dollars charge on my credit card for the PlatePass. Unless I was sleep driving, which I am 100% sure I don't suffer from, I never did pass through a non-cash lane, and I paid cash at every toll. Multiple attempts to reach them were unsuccessful and the credit card did not remove my charge. To add to the pain and insult, the charge they claim was $1 with $19 administrative fees. I thought that scams on this scale are not possible in a western economy like the US one, but apparently there are companies that manage to scam people unpunished. I will probably continue to file complaints and make sure that there is enough information for people to avoid getting into my situation and PlatePass will cleanup their act or disappear altogether.

I rented a car from Hertz from Dulles International Airport from 1/13 to 1/16. PlatePass billed me $24.85 for tolls (including $14.85 administrative fee) for 2 tolls at $5.00 each that I did not use. One charge was for the Ben Franklin Bridge toll that connects Philadelphia PA to Camden, NJ and the other was the Betsy Ross Bridge that connects Philadelphia PA to Pennsauken, NJ. This is totally baffling to me as I drove the rental car from Dulles International Airport in VA to Winchester, VA on 1/13 and from Winchester, VA back to Dulles on 1/16. Hertz and PlatePass have no explanation as to how or what happened to cause this billing mistake. Is someone committing fraud with these bogus charges and who else has this happened to who may not be aware charges are being incurred that are not valid?

I rented from Hertz last December from San Jose airport, and there is a charge appeared on my credit card for $25.90, which include 4 days of $4.95/day administrative fee and a $6 toll. I was never made aware of the service. If I knew I was going to be charged for the service, I would at least have taken advantage of the fast lanes passing through the toll booth. Mostly likely, if I was told about it, I would deactivate it and take care of the toll manually. Called Hertz and they said that it depends where you get the car. In some states, I will need to call to find out. This is so ridiculous that the car I get may have some hidden figures. I need to know what has been put on the car that I am renting from them. I can't believe this is happening to Hertz. I am a gold member and have been renting from them for years and I am not sure if I will in the future.

I had two weekly rentals with Hertz last month, one at Puerto Rico and one at Florida. Similarly as all previous complaints, I got two bills $40 and $26 (both of them include a $24.75 service fee). I was never told about the hidden toll service fee at the counter, and it's ridiculous that you need to pay for the days on which no electronic tolls are being collected. Furthermore, you have no choice because some of the tolled roads don't have a pay by cash option.
Listen Hertz, you have lost or will lose LOTS of customers because of allowing this trash company to collect tolls this way. I rented a few other times in Florida with your competitors, and this is the first time that I got a toll bill that significantly exceeds expectation. Yes we probably can't dispute the charge because we signed on the contract with damn small fine prints, but we also feel disgusted and will stay away from Hertz in future rentals. As someone else pointed, there have been lawsuits against Hertz and PlatePass. It's just a matter of time that more suits will show up. You won't get benefit in the long term. I hope the government can set up regulations that all toll related surcharges must be explicitly listed on rental agreement (just like all insurance/fuel options), in order to stop some CHEAP companies to squeeze money out of customer's pocket.

In December 12th of 2013, I returned a rental to Hertz. All was normal until a few weeks later. I got a charge from Platepass.com on my credit card statement. I didn't have any dealings with this company so I went online to find out what they do. Apparently, Hertz is supposed to ask you whether you want to use their service or not. I was never asked. Hertz makes it impossible for you (the customer) to ever reach them to complain about this as they will immediately hand you off to Platepass call center, which is also trying to get you off the line as quick as possible. The Platepass call center just directs you to the site. This is a scam and should be illegal.
I paid for the Sunpass charges on the cash lane the few times I passed through one. They are probably counting on millions of people not going to complain but they got it wrong. I will fight them for this on every website that will lend an ear. I'm one pissed off customer that's never again renting with Hertz or ever dealing with this Platepass system. When I finally talked to an agent, he explained that there are tolls where you can't pay with cash and are automatic, so you can't avoid them and your only other option is getting a traffic ticket. This is the shadiest deal I have ever witnessed. I hope Hertz and Platepass get another class action lawsuit for this.

I have been subjected to Hertz Plate Pass fees as well. They have charged me an administrative fee on days that I never passed through tolls, so that I would 'avoid costly fees'. Even though the fee for passing through a NH State Toll is simply paying the toll ($1.00). They have sent me an invoice for this, even though I used my own E-ZPass to pay for the toll while the pass was on my dashboard to be scanned. Apparently, Hertz makes their money by subjecting customers to ludicrous charges and administrative fees. After reading many of the comments on this website I don't feel safe giving PlatePass my credit card or bank account information.

I have a similar story to everyone here. I rented a car from Hertz for a week in SF. I crossed the Golden Gate Bridge once, which no longer has the option to pay in cash. Two months later, I received a bill from Plate Pass for $30.75 - a $6 bridge toll and a $24.75 "administrative" fee. When I called Hertz, they played dumb and told me to call Plate Pass. Searching around, I found Hertzplatepasssettlement.com. This is a scam that has been going on for years, escalating to the point of a class action lawsuit. In spite of losing the lawsuit, Hertz is *still* continuing with this practice. This alone guarantees that I'll never rent from them again. Caveat emptor.

I rented a Hertz car a few weeks ago, declining PlatePass service and paid all tolls in cash. On the last day, we got off one exit that did not have a person at the booth, only a sign saying to please proceed. Upon arriving home, we received a bill for $25.75 - $1.00 for the toll and $24.75 for a $4.95 per day x 5 days usage. Funny how the unmanned exit is right near Orlando airport where most people would get off to get gas to fill up before returning the car. Hertz PlatePass - what a scam! Spent 25 minutes in automated phone limbo calling PlatePass before getting to a live person.

I rented a car from Advantage in Boston for a week in October. We drove through New Hampshire and chose to pay for all our tolls with cash as we went. In reviewing my credit card statement for November, I discovered that there was a charge for $25.49 that showed up almost 3 weeks after we returned the vehicle. Upon calling Advantage, I was referred to PlatePass customer service. I called and explained the situation, that we had paid cash the whole way. I feel that my credit card has been fraudulently charged without my permission for a service that we did not use. Customer Service claimed that my case will be under review for the next 10 days - I have no hope of getting this money back. What gives any agency the right to charge me, falsely, without notice when I never, ever gave them my credit card information?

It has been quite a long time since I been to Texas like 3 years ago. I remember paying $10 in tolls with the PlatePass and that sounded okay to me. Unfortunately, I rented a car in Texas from Hertz at the airport. I knew the car had PlatePass and told my girlfriend that the tolls will be deducted from my account. I got charged $30.33 on my account after I return the car. Then, I did not think much it since we did go on a bunch of toll roads. Then I got charged another $5.00 in 2 weeks. Then another $1.06. I thought they forgot to remove my credit card. But after being on the phone for 30 minutes of waiting to get customer service, I hung up the phone. I ended up calling Hertz, but waited 30 minutes and got nowhere. So then I looked up my rental agreement on the platepass.com and there it was a $24.75 administrative fee. Then my $10 in tolls I needed to pay. What a ripoff. But now I know about the "hidden fees". Wow :(

I rented from Hertz and went over the Golden Gate Bridge once. I just received a charge on my AMEX for $25. When I called Hertz, they said that the charge was listed in my agreement and that I was paying 4.95/day plus any bridge tolls. If I had known that, I would have declined that charge and easily avoided the toll bridges. Hertz tried to shuffle me off to PlatePass, but I said “No, you guys are in collusion with them on this rip off and I hold you responsible.” When I asked to talk with a Hertz manager, I was referred to Customer Service.
When I reached them, I was treated very rudely and the agent would not pass me on to her manager saying, "No, they won't want to talk with you about this either." Needless to say, lesson learned and even though I'm a Hertz Gold Card member, I will avoid Hertz whenever I can going forward.

I rented a car through Hertz while I was in California and a few weeks later, when I was checking my credit card statement online, I found out an item described as "HERTZRENTALFINECOM" and a charge amount of $30.00. I called Hertz as I was wondering what this is about and then they asked me to talk to PlatePass about it so I called PlatePass and they said this is because I had a toll violation. I wasn't sure what exactly this was about still, so I asked for further details and they asked me to contact the toll roads violation department which I did. They said something about I was driving in a highway where there is a lane that I shouldn't be driving but I did so, The car that I was renting was caught on a camera. I never saw a sign about it and I didn't know such thing either since it was my first time visiting California.
Anyway, they helped me reduced my violation fee down to $36. I also asked about this $30 that Hertz or PlatePass charged and they said that would be something I will have to talk to PlatePass. I called PlatePass and they said they can't do anything about it because it is some sort of processing fee. I asked what kind of processing fee that is and they kept saying it is on that agreement that I signed and refuse to credit back. I really think this is ridiculous and like others on this website say "this is a scam". I would never rent a car through Hertz ever. By the way, when I searched "Hertz PlatePass" on google, first thing came up was http://hertzplatepasssettlement.com/. Hopefully, this will happen again.

I rented a vehicle from Hertz. Last week I got a bill from PlatePass for $29.95. The bill is for crossing the Tobin Bridge (outside Boston). Normal toll is $2.50. Their invoice is for: Tolls: $4.50, Administrative Fee: $24.75. Unlike others that paid cash, I used E-ZPass and E-ZPass shows they billed me for this bridge crossing. I contacted them today and spoke with Susie ** who stated that these charges are owed and that until I provided them proof, I owed them $29.25. She was rude the whole time and kept interrupting me while I was trying to give her my correct address since they mailed it to the wrong address. I asked to speak with her supervisor. She claimed her supervisor, Danielle, was not in the office. I ended the call and called right back.
After being on hold for about 20 minutes, a male rep transferred me to Danielle. I asked Danielle how long she had been there, she said a few months, I rephrased to ask about today and she said nearly an hour. I am currently in the process of forwarding my complaints to the BBB, the Massachusetts Consumer Affairs, the Arizona Attorney General office and PlatePass. This is beyond ridiculous. This appears to be the way this company does business and I will not stand for it.

After a week long car rental in Tampa, Florida with Hertz, I was charged $25.89 on my credit card a few weeks later, when I received my cc statement. The charge was from PlatePass. PlatePass said that I ran a toll at 10:13pm in Miami. I called and explained that I was not even driving the car at 10:15pm and was nowhere near Miami. They said that I needed to provide receipts to prove that I was somewhere else on that day and time. I requested for them to remove the charge, but they would not. They wanted to remove $19.80, but leave me with a $6.09 charge.
I requested to see a picture of my rental car's license plate which they were willing to get at a cost and that they would not be able to remove any charges if the picture matched my rental car. I requested the picture. After searching the web this seems to be a common fraudulent way for PlatePass to generate revenue which has been going on for many years. How many people don’t notice the charge on their cc bill? How many will accept the credit of $19.80 and pay them the $6.09?

I rented a car with Hertz and had prepaid via Hotwire. Several months later, I receive a bill from PlatePass. I had no clue what this company was. After digging, I found it's to automatically charge for tolls. I have no problem paying a toll. The problem I have is that Hertz never once told me about this program or its associated fees. I'm sure it's buried in the fine print but they ABUSE this program as an unethical cash cow for their business. They charged an admin fee of 4.95 for every single day of the rental. That's absurd especially since they go out of their way to not tell consumers about it. I tried to contact Hertz customer service via several documented emails and got 0 response. I'm stuck with a $26 charge for a $1.50 toll for some "service" they go out of their way to not tell you about. Shame on your, Hertz. Never ever rent from them. I called and they provided a detail of the tolls that I was "responsible" for (along with a $24.75 administrative charge). The charges were not mine. The vehicle did not have a toll tag in the car. Actually, looking at the charges and knowing the Chicago area, it would be nearly impossible for me to amass these tolls, all one way runs to O'Hare from I-55 without any returns. In one of my discussions with the PlatePass people, they insisted that the toll tag was in the car and I did not know what one looked like. In conversations with Hertz could not confirm that the vehicle actually had a toll tag. Eventually, the money was refunded, but it took four calls. Now I want to know how to charge them for my "administrative" charge.

We were told that the PlatePass system was an unlimited toll option. I reluctantly paid the daily fee even though we only crossed the bridge once (tolls are only charged for one way). Now 2 months later, PlatePass is sending me a bill for $30.75 for a $6.00 toll. What a ripoff. Are these business practices legal? It looks like trying to contact PlatePass is a waste of time after reading all the complaints that date way back.
Looks like Hertz and all their affiliate rental car companies have been ripping off customers for a long time on this. I wished I would have known about this before I rented from Dollar. Our car had no device on the dash or anywhere else that I noticed, to open or keep sealed up to keep from receiving a signal. I have been on 2 more trips since the June date and don't have all my old previous rental contracts to reference. I will never use Hertz or any of their affiliates ever again. I would recommend anyone that does, to video the entire contract signing phase of the rental for evidence of the ripoffs to come at a later date. Hopefully someday, a class action lawsuit will stop these deceptive practices.

I would have no problem paying a one time administrative fee of $5, but paying $25 on top of the $5 toll is ridiculous. This is actually the second time I got charged a month after my rental for PlatePass "Service". This is NOT a service; this is a SCAM. A $3 toll ended up costing me $27.75. You automatically get charged (because you're required to have a card on file) a $4.95 per day Administration Fee and this adds up for each day on your rental contract. It doesn't matter if the only toll you used was on the last day right before returning the rental; you still get charged $4.95 for every day you had the rental. It's one of those important pieces of information Hertz conveniently forgets to mention every time you rent a vehicle. At the end, there's nothing you can do because "It's on page 3 of your contract", said the trained voice on the other end of the PlatePass customer support line. The problem was that every time I thought to look at it, it had come open again, and there was no lock or safety guard to keep it closed. Apparently one of these times that it opened, the toll was charged to Plate Pass rather than my own E-ZPass, which was also on the dashboard. Now, instead of the $8.75 that I should have paid, Plate Pass is piling on almost $15 in additional charges.
I would have no problem paying the $8.75, since I do owe it, but $23.80 for a service that I never wanted is literally highway robbery. The company makes it very difficult and time consuming to get a live person on the phone, and then they all play helpless in the matter. About a week later, I noticed charges on my credit card in the amount of $113 for 9 tolls on 9 different days around NYC. I contacted Hertz, PlatePass, and credit card company to try and resolve the situation. No luck with them trying to resolve it among themselves so I took matters into my own hand.
Finally, almost 2 1/2 months later, I received the refund check from PlatePass. I couldn't believe between the 3 that they couldn't figure it out. Rental agreement showed the pick up and drop off to be the same and total mileage. Simple Google map search would have shown them there was no possibility of me passing through the tolls with the information on the rental agreement, yet it took them 2 1/2 months to figure this out.
I won't rent from Hertz again and I'm disappointed in American Expresses investigation of the matter. It is very difficult to navigate through Hertz and PlatePass to actually get someone to respond. Finally, a couple of stand-up employees from PlatePass helped me.

I rented a car in NY for a weekend from Hertz. I was aware of the PlatePass in the vehicle from previous rentals. First of all, it is poor business practice to require you to have this in your vehicle. As with the gas and insurance options, I would immediately opt out of the device if possible. Hertz's response to this is that I do not have to open the device if I do not want to use it. As I found in this trip, it is not true. I closed the Plate Pass box and began my drive upstate, proceeding through the cash lane at every toll. It was not until the last booth that the very nice representative gave me my cash back and told me that she noticed "E-ZPass has already registered my vehicle."
To my disgust, I realized that the loose PlatePass box had opened throughout the drive approximately 0.5 - 1 inch and was double charging each time I went through a toll. About a month later, I received $35 in charges from PlatePass for both tolls and service fees for the weekend. As I did not keep receipts for the tolls I paid, there was "no way to prove I paid them," not to mention you do not even receive the E-ZPass discount. PlatePass is a scam and it is terrible Hertz agrees to this. It should be optional to place the device in your vehicle.

I was traveling on business to Washington state and exited an area that said toll road ahead. I was appalled by a charge on my AmEe that said PlatePass with the toll and a service charge for every day of my rental. No one at Hertz asked if I wanted this service which I would have denied like I do the gas option, insurance, etc. When I called PlatePass, they simply said there were no toll booths and it is all electronic. They said I agreed on my Hertz contract for this. No way! It's very scary that Hertz would act in this manner.

Recently, I rented a vehicle from Advantage Auto, which is apparently a subsidiary of Hertz. After reviewing my bank statement, I noticed a charge from the above reference perpetrator. I immediately checked my rental agreement to see if I agreed to anything, which I did not. Upon my agreement, it stated that if you do not wish to use the service by PlatePass to go through the cash lane and pay cash for your tolls, which is what I did for each and every toll that I went through. I contacted my bank and filed a dispute. I also contacted the merchant who stated they have photos of the license plate and that there was nothing that can be done. At no time did I go through a toll lane did I not have to pay and I refuse to pay for tolls I already paid for.
Currently, I am awaiting a call back from a supervisor from PlatePass, and I will not give up until my funds are refunded back to me.

Wow! What a scam! I rented a Hertz car in Miami the last week in August. Now, my credit card has been charged $12.00 by PlatePass.com. First of all, I was never told by Hertz that they use this gizmo in their cars (so obviously, I never agreed to it). Secondly, I paid cash at whatever few toll booths I went through. I have told PlatePass to take this charge off my credit card. But if they don't, I will stop the payment. I've also filed a complaint with the BBB about them, which you should, too. I'm just stunned that Hertz (not exactly a reputable company either, by the way) would affiliate themselves with such an obvious scam.

I feel ripped off. I just received a bill from a company called PlatePass in Arizona, that is related to when we rented a car. My husband and I rented a car in Boston and paid the tolls with cash.
Hertz has installed these devices that charge you when you go through a toll. We were told we would only be charged if the device was opened-- and it was not. The verbiage on the PlatePass FAQ form says: "allowing our customers to choose if and when they want to use our service. There is no charge for PlatePass unless you use it. If you enter a cash, coin or gated lane, you will have to pay cash at that time".
I called customer service and the representative told me because we made a U-Turn at some point, we were in violation of the toll and got charged again. She said our PlatePass was opened. Then they charged us an administrative fee of $2.50 per day for this service that we never asked for. Total bill of $10-- not much. I just really resent getting billed for services we did not ask for or use. The customer service rep said there is nothing she can do for us and we just have to pay. I am probably going to just pay the bill, but I am not happy about this and this feels very shady to me.

After a week long car rental in Florida with Hertz, I was charged $10.75 on my credit card a few weeks later, when I received my cc statement. The charge was from Plate Pass. I called Plate Pass because I had a similar problem last year with in excess of $40 charge tolls in New York. I was never in New York. This time, I was told I went through a toll on road 528 in Orlando sometime around 1:00 pm and incurred a 75 cent fee. This was wrong. I am fully aware of the toll booths in this area and I always have change and I always pay cash. There are usually about 4 toll booths between the airport and the Disney area of Orlando, and I am usually there twice a year.
I do not know how they do it, but this outfit seems to get access to your credit card even when you pay cash at tolls, and still charge you these exorbitant charges. This seems to be a scam and I believe it is happening to thousands of people a day for charges they did not create. This time I called my credit card company and told them not to pay, these charges were not created by me. It's very frustrating. You feel violated, like someone is ripping you off and you cannot do anything about it. These states and these rental car companies that allow this must be sharing in the rip off money. I think there is a very good case for a class action lawsuit here, just read the blogs on the web.

This is a scam deal. You get incomplete information to mislead you to use their toll service, beware we got $11 for a one dollar toll. The complete detailed terms are not available and all written information is made to make you do a wrong decision. They do not help or respond the phone, we were on hold for at least an hour and them call drop. Only thieves here! There were no other than the rip off feeling after suddenly they charged my card 10 times toll's price for the "convenience". Beware, sure they can mess your account since there is no warning.
