We checked in the hotel on the 24th of Dec 2010 for a 9-day stay. After several days with the 'no disturb' sign on the door, the maid entered our room while we were out on the 31st, and removed all our stuff. She mixed them up in a garbage bag which damaged our personal belongings. They said there was a problem with the reservations, which according to the front desk, they didn't check the computer reservations before they did that. I've spoken to the manager about that and he stated that he has been in the business for a long time, and had many complaints filed about the hotel, and there wasn't really anything that he could do about it. Econolodge Rideau Street in Ottawa was the worst hotel I have ever stayed at. The manager was very rude and wouldn't even try to resolve the problem.

I was a guest at the EconoLodge in Monticello, NY the night of Saturday, November 6, 2010. My experience in Monticello was the worst experience I have ever had in my many years of traveling. When I took my luggage in, I became aware of a sourish, unclean odor. I called the front desk and asked to be given another room. The young woman told me she could not because the hotel was fully booked. This was patently not true. The parking lot remained empty except for four to five cars all through the night. I have never been refused a request for another room in the two three times in my lifetime that I have made such a request. I saw a total of four people during my stay. One was the man I refer to in the next paragraph and the other two were a couple who left the parking lot at the same time I did on Sunday morning.
I went to the front desk shortly after I was refused another room to ask for some supplies that were missing. There was a young man also in the lobby who complained to me, in the presence of the clerk. You can check in but you can't check out. This gentleman, who had arrived just an hour earlier he said, wanted to check out because of excessive noise in the room next to him. The young woman would not give him a receipt. I commented that this is not the policy of Choice Hotels, and encouraged the gentleman to call 800-4-choice. He told me he would.
In the room there was no alarm clock. When I tried to call the front desk about two hours after my arrival, I discovered that the phone was dead. There was an electrical wall outlet into which the TV was plugged that was pulled from the wall, certainly a safety issue. The carpet was just plain dirty and presumably the source of the sour odor that persisted throughout my stay. There was no room to put toilet articles in the bathroom.
The drapes were not hung correctly so that they sagged in the center. On Sunday morning, November 7th, I went to the front desk at about 8:00 a.m. (Standard Time). I rang the bell at the desk twice and no one ever came to see what I wanted. I am compelled to say that I believe the young woman was only following orders from her superior in refusing a different room to me and in refusing to give the other customer a receipt. She seemed to be a person of refinement and of a gentle nature. I felt sorry for her.

Beware of this hotel. After paying for two nights in Memphis, my boyfriend and I went to Beale Street our second night. Our debit card was rejected, stating that we had reached our withdrawal limit for the day of $1,000.00, which was not right. Sure enough, after consulting our bank account, the EconoLodge we were staying at had charged our card four separate times in the same night. This was nearly an $880.00 unauthorized charge made by Econo Lodge in the course of a single day. My boyfriend called the front desk instantly and they had no clue on how to handle the situation. (Refund our money. You took it out, you can put it back in!). They were rude and acted as if we had our information wrong. After nearly an hour of discussing the matter and being on hold, my boyfriend finally reached someone who assured us the situation was resolved. Lo and behold, once back in Arkansas, our account had not been refunded. My boyfriend spent hours on hold trying to find someone who knew what the heck they were doing while Choice Hotels held on to over $800.00 of our money for a $200.00 hotel stay.
Finally, he reached someone who assured him the matter would be investigated and resolved within 72 hours. Wow, that’s fast. Not. The next day my boyfriend received 3 calls while at work, an environment in which he cannot answer his phone, and was left a hateful voicemail by a customer service representative who not only got his last name entirely wrong, but declared that if he did not call back at once the matter would not be resolved. He called the next day, and they asked for personal bank information while he was sitting in his office, etc. I cannot begin to describe the rudeness and unprofessionalism and waste of our time! Finally, we were told the money would be credited back within 48 hours. We shall see. In the meantime, we requested a free night, and were denied! They were nice enough to refund our $20.00 parking pass.
Thanks a million, Econo Lodge. Not only this, but we were underwhelmed by our stay and the overall condition of the hotel. The downtown Memphis hotel is dirty, outdated, has an unfriendly and slow staff, and the best part was the cleaning lady opened the door on us after knocking once at 9 am, the second day of our two-night stay. Then she never came back and rudely told us we should have put a do not disturb sign on the door when we saw her in the hallway. The rooms were dirty, and you could hear everything going on in the next room. We will never stay at a Choice Hotel again!

We rented two rooms at the Econo Lodge Hershey for an overnight stay July 24th-25th, 2010, one for us and the other for our sons, ages 24 and 26, both professionals. After a long day in Lancaster, we went to the room to turn in only to find a large mildew stain, about 1 ft in diameter on the underside of one of the quilts in our room. It was disgusting. It was late, we were exhausted, so we simply used the other bed. In the morning, our sons showed us that in their room, 2 of the pillowcases were blood-stained and one of the bedsheets was badly stained. They did not realize that the stains were blood stains until morning but had simply thrown the pillows on the floor. They did not notice the stain on the bed sheet until morning.
Jon brought all this to the attention of the front desk clerk and was met with rudeness and defensiveness, saying there was nothing she could do...that one housekeeper had been fired and that we had not reported the stains immediately. Jon responded that we did not know about the blood stains until morning and did not use the bedding with the other stains. He stated that he just wanted her to know her staff needed to be more mindful of cleanliness. She did not respond in a helpful manner at all. When Jon returned to the room, he then expressed to me her unacceptable behavior. I then brought her the pillows so that she could see what we were talking about. She was extremely rude, so I asked to speak with the general manager, who was not there. I asked for his business card and she found one only after I asked for his name and phone number.
The following day, I phoned the general manager, who already knew of the situation. He accused us of vandalizing both rooms, of embarrassing his staff (there was one other family who had already checked out and I was very mindful not to upset their little girl) and the manager told me that I had acted "unprofessional. " He repeatedly told me to keep quiet, that I was acting unprofessional, and refused to speak with my husband, who could tell him how the front desk clerk first responded to him. I finally just handed the phone to my husband, who defused the situation. After disputing the hotel charge through my bank, the general manager agreed to charge us half price for "dirty quilts" which is really not representing the situation accurately.
This entire episode spoiled what should have been a very pleasant getaway. Even more disturbing is that we discovered after the fact that because Blue Choice Hotels are individually owned and operated, no one's at the helm. This manager is accountable to no one. When we contacted the "corporate" number, we were referred back to the general manager, who was part of the problem. Furthermore, my husband could not find any governing body, legal or within the health industry, that was within its jurisdiction to investigate any potential health violations of a hotel in Pennsylvania.
In a nutshell, we were met with unsanitary conditions, unhealthy conditions, unconcerned and rude hotel personnel, and a system in the state of Pennsylvania that is unprepared to do anything about it.

My mother booked a room for us at the Econo Lodge in Cleveland, MS. When we got there, the room was not ready. At this time, we went to Walmart and got milk for my two-year old. When I returned to the room to put milk in the refrigerator, I made sure it was on, turned the air conditioner on high and left to go to my family. When I returned 4 hours later, the room was hot. I called the front desk and they sent a maintenance man. He pulled the air conditioner out and worked for a minute, put back in and stopped working. There were also mosquitoes all over the room. I asked him why, he said the cleaning ladies leave the door open and they get in. I have four children, 3 children with me, two under the age of 3.
We went in the bathroom, there were still dirty rags from the previous customers. I opened the fridge to get the milk, it was hot and not working. I asked for my money back. They said they could not do that and that they did not have a room to give me. They brought me a fan that did no good. At this time, a cockroach started crawling above the bed. I packed up my children after asking again for my money back or help getting another room. They told me no. At this time, I went to Indianola and I had to pay for a room myself. My mother had gotten other room, which she had not received the money back for and I had to pay for the room I could not afford. I will never stay at Econo Lodge again.

I reserved a non-smoker room on May 8. It was confirmed on May 10. We were given a smoking room, which according to our reservation was incorrect. When the desk clerk was approached about the error, he was rude and dismissive. He told us that we could get another room but they would all be smoking rooms. Obviously, we were not happy with a smoking room, but the dismissive attitude appears to flow from the top. I have tried to contact the management and either the voice mail is full or they do not return the phone calls. I did not expect much, but the attitude surprised me. Was the attitude because a bait and switch was standard? Was the attitude due to the color of my skin or how I dressed? Is the reason for the lack of response due to a serious lack of concern about their patrons. I don't know, but I was very disappointed. Obviously, I lost $70 for something that I did not want. I kept the windows open at night to air out the room. I just wonder what it takes to make these guys care about their customers.

I couldn’t cancel or checkout early unless I return the room card and was completely out of the room.

A pleasant surprise. I needed a cheap place to stay for 10 nights. They had a "buy 4 nights, get one free" discount going on, so I did that twice. I heard some bad things about this Econo Lodge before, and at $50-$65 a night, I wasn't expecting a Hilton. However, I was told that the motel was renovated in 2009. The pictures of the motel are inaccurate, the rooms look much better! For $51 a night, I was impressed. My biggest complaint was the toilet had to be flushed twice after each use, and the comforter had some burn holes, but I was in a smoking room, as I requested. The TV worked great, with free HBO. I brought a DVD player, but since the TV didn't have a remote, I wasn't able to watch anything other than TV. But that wasn't a problem.
I am a clean freak, so I disinfected and cleaned the place to my own standards, but with the exception of two hairs in the bathroom, and a very small unidentifiable red stain on the sheet, the room was properly cleaned. And the maids came by every other day to clean, as is their policy, though you can have them come in every day. I had a nice stay. The front desk people weren't very helpful, but they weren't out right rude. Bottom line, give this Econo Lodge a chance. The 2009 renovations really worked wonders. It isn't anything special, but it's the cheapest place for many miles that won't involve hearing the hooker next door all night, feeling clean and safe.
I do have to say that I brought my own blankets and slept with them under me and covering me. So I can't say there aren't bed bugs. I just assume there aren't since everything else was upkept well and clean. There are smoking and non-smoking rooms. Some shady people stay here, but they all keep to themselves and there aren't any parking lot gatherings or incidents. In general, I felt safe, clean and comfortable for the price I was paying. I've stayed at much nicer hotels, but for a fraction of the price. Give it a shot.

I went to this hotel and was given Room **. According to the advertisement, it had an outdoor pool, a refrigerator, a microwave, an iron and iron board, and free breakfast. This Room ** smelled like urine, the toilet rocked side to side because it was coming off the floor, the pool was like a swamp and closed, the refrigerator did not work, there was no microwave, no iron or ironing board, and no breakfast.
The wall socket covers where broken and I could not plug in my cell phone, the TV remote had no batteries. The people above my room said their bathroom door was off the hinges. I decided to cut my vacation off by a day so that I wouldn't have to stay there. I had already paid for 2 nights at this hotel. It's a dump and should be banned from ever having people come and spend their hard earned money for a hotel that usually charges by the hour.

Today I went to the Econo Lodge to check on the pool and room for my daughter’s birthday party. When I asked about it, he got very angry and said no more parties at all. When I asked what was the matter, he said small town and people talk and when they do they lose business, so no more parties. He was very rude to me and I can assure you people will hear about it. Whenever they ask, I will explain how I was treated poorly. Just because one person messed things up, why should the rest of us take the blame?
This town has lost a lot already and the last thing we need to do is lose more but people like him who have no business around here. He should be happy he has a job. A lot of people would love to have a job and he should try to be a little more pleasant to his customers. From what I understand, this is not the first incident of rudeness from this particular hotel. Thanks for your time.

I booked a reservation at the Econo Lodge in Fort Lauderdale, Florida because it was a member of the Choice Hotel Group which is supposed to be Econo Lodges better properties. Upon arriving, I checked in with a very rude man named Jimmy behind bullet-proof glass. Several men were loitering in the parking lot clearly selling drugs. My room on the first floor was supposed to be a non-smoking room but there were ashes and a cigarette butt in the sink. The interior smelled like a $5 hooker and the air that came out of the air condition smelled like the inside of a fake leg. When I was preparing for a shower, I found a 3" long cockroach clinging to the shower curtain. I quickly ran to collect my belongings and exit the room but my clothes had already been infested by smaller roaches. I shook each clothing item briskly and put everything in a trash bag.
Front desk Jimmy didn't seem to care about my findings in the room and he said my room was non-refundable as he yelled loudly through the bulletproof glass. He told me to leave if I wanted. I left, taking a loss on the cost of the room, and checked into a nice La Quinta Suites just down the street. I now have several bite marks on my leg and my skin is extremely itchy. This experience has ruined my vacation to south Florida. Please do not stay at the Econo Lodge - Fort Lauderdale. $80 room + tax in the state of Florida, bug bites and rash of itchy skin on my legs, roach infestation in my luggage and clothes. I threw away several articles of clothing due to fear of roach egg deposits or fecal matter.

I worked for an opening at Econolodge in Walnut Iowa for 4 months. Do not stay at this hotel! While watching them turn an old Colonial Inn into an Econolodge, I witnessed several concerning things. One is the labor. The first people that were hired to do the siding were meth dealers, and although the owner knew of the fact, he did nothing until finally after not working for a week, he had the police remove them from the property. I was hired for front desk work, but soon found myself doing laundry, housekeeping, and front desk, along with several odd jobs that had nothing to do with the hotel, such as getting the in-house manager's mail, or finding phone numbers for them to take their daughter to the optometrist (they still call me!).
The GM, Brent, has been arrested on several occasions in the past, would brag about it, and would talk in front of customers about the strip clubs he used to own. On more than one occasion, he sent myself or another front desk girl home crying. When we ordered company shirts, mine was a size too small, but he told me to go try it on anyway. I came out of the bathroom, and told him it fit a little tight in the shoulders, to which he replied, "tape your boobs down"! There is mold growing under the breakfast cabinet, the in-house managers live in the rooms (they do not have their own living space), and the company refuses to pay overtime as well. I do not suggest you work for this company either.

When we arrived on June 30th, we found cigarette ashes in the commode, dirt in the bathtub and dried substance on the blanket that was hard and crusty. The beds were not very comfortable. When we laid down on the mattresses, you sank down in them and they smelled very musty. The door did not secure, there was a huge gap between the door and the facing that could easily be opened from the outside. The entire hotel had a very bad and unclean smell. Their continental breakfast consisted of three varieties of boxed cereal and spoiled milk.

We stayed because we were exhausted and we’re told there were no refunds. It was the worst hotel I ever stayed in. On 10/02/08 we checked in at 3:40 am for a two day stay. After checking in, the clerk gave us our key card for room #216. Before unloading our belongings we located our room and was appalled by the urine and moldy smell upon entering the room. We immediately returned to the clerk and expressed our dismay. He without apologizing gave us another card key saying '218'. We inspected that room which had the same smell. There was a sign in the reception area that stated there were no refunds. Unfortunately, we had no way of inspecting the hotel before paying since we paid in advance. The hotel on the website looked fairly decent. In addition, we had to maneuver around the maids cleaning cart left in hallway the entire night. There was trash and soiled towels laying here and there in the hallways.
The aircondition units were broken and the windows had no screens and were left open. The only security at the hotel was the clerk sitting behind a bullet proof glass in the reception area. The front and side entrances were left open at all times. The fire alarm had tape across the pull handle. We did not rest well. Especially with no door chain we usually see at most places we have stayed at. The smell was so bad it gave us headaches and we had to purchase scented candles to lessen the stench.
In the past we have paid for many hotels in advance, but this experience has made us leery of taking the chance and not getting our monies worth. We paid $90 + tax per night for a very uncomfortable stay and can't get a refund because of a sign they had posted. It's very obvious that sign was put there because others in the past must have demanded their money back. We feel very ripped off and will never consider staying at another EconoLodge.

My father gifted my husband and I hotel points from Choice Hotels to stay at the Econolodge in Hicksville, NY. We checked in an hour after check-in and was told by the clerk, Dennis, that there were NO King bed rooms available. All that was available was a double-bed room. We did sign for the room, but contacted my father to see if this was customary with the hotel chain. When my father returned home and called Choice Hotels customer service line, he was assured that the room we initially reserved was to be guaranteed until the next day. After talking to the Choice Hotels representatives, I proceeded to go to the desk and ask Dennis why we were not given the room we reserved. This was a few hours after check-in, but felt that we were treated unfairly because we were customers on Choice Rewards points and not paying customers.
At this very point in time, another couple checks in and is given a King bed room in front of my husband and myself. We were told that there were not any King rooms available when we checked in a couple hours earlier. When we asked Dennis why he was able to give them a King room, he responded by saying, Do you expect me to do the same thing to them that I did to you? I was appauled and disgusted with the quality of customer service in her establishment. We filed a complaint with Choice Hotels and the Manager Amy Sharkey, intially sent a letter expressing her apologies. However, in the letter she wrote, If you had decided at check in tha the room assigned to you was unacceptable, there would have been options.
When I asked her to return my phone call, she conveyed that there was another couple that decided to stay longer in the room we had reserved. I thought reservations were for a particular style of room, not one room in particular. From her conversation there were not any options at the time of check in and they were using every excuse to cover up the poor handling of this situation. It seems that in every direction there is another person that is trying to cover up this horrible ordeal.
In Consequence to this horrible ordeal, my father lost 24,000 hotel points. We found another hotel to stay at after feeling humiliated and mistreated that cost approximately 394.00 and the first day of our trip was completely ruined. The restitution I am seeking is my father's account credited back the points used for the nights we did not use and for Choice Hotels to eliminate the Econolodge chain from there affliated hotels.

In September 2006 I made reservations for 2 for 2 nights, November 3 and November 4, 2006. I telephoned on Friday, November 3, 2006 to confirm reservations (which the reservations were in my husband's name Edward Tharrington) and asked them if they had reservations for for Edward Tharrington for 11/3 - 11/4/2006 and was told by Nicole that we did.
We checked in on 11/3/06 and in going into the room we noticed that the dead bolt did not work properly. We reported it to Nicole and she said that she would try to get someone to fix it but if not, that no one could break into our room without a key. They did get the dead bolt fixed by the time we returned from dinner. We also noticed that there was a lot of chewing gum on the not so good carpet. We got some tissue and got that up. In taking showers as soon as we opened the soap, it crumbled into pieces. Heat didn't heat up the room till 4:00 a.m. on 11/4/06. One of the light bulbs was not working.
Walls were filthy behind exterior door as you come in. Shower curtian had mildew on it. On the morning of 11/4/06, Nicole had us checking out that morning. I spoke with her and told her that in September 2006 and when I called on Friday, 11/3/06, I was told that we did have the room for 2 nights and the rate was $89.10 plus tax. She told me that she could not let us have the room for that price and if we stayed we would have to pay $101.00 for Saturday night.

Checked into Econolodge, Vineland, NJ, for two nights. Hotel is a health hazard. Rat poison openly displayed in room. Wallpaper falling from the walls, carpeting torn, toliet did not flush properly, and mildrew smell throughout the room. After complaining to the desk clerk, Roberta, she credited me for one night and we checked out.
Three days later, after complaining on-line to Choice Hotels, someone name Bart called me at home. He left a message on my answering machine that he was the Manager of Econolodge. He stated that if I did not like the hotel, I should have checked out, and not stayed for the one night. If I think I am going to refund your money, its not going to happen. He was very rude, and when I returned his call to explain what happened, he repeated a refund was not going to happen, and he hang the telephone up on me.
