Bedbugs, poor condition, minimal breakfast. My partner and I made the grave mistake of staying at the Econolodge in traverse city, MI. The hotel was run down, dirty, and the room did NOT match the sparkling new looking ones on the Hotels.com website. The plumbing is backwards: "Cold is hot and hot is cold." There was also no full breakfast. Just a pot of coffee and pre-packaged muffins. Milk had been spilled all over the counter and coffee pot. No one was around to clean it up or put out other food. It took a long time for the hot water to come, there weren't enough towels, and a used bar of soap was in the shower. Gross.
Also disgusting: partner found an earwig crawling on the headboard. We checked the pillows and covers for other bugs and thought that was it. NO. We got mauled by bedbugs that night. It can take up to 2 weeks for bedbug bites to show on the skin. Our bites didn't appear until a few days after we stayed here. Once we realized what the red bumps on our skin were, I called the hotel to inform them they had a bedbug problem and that I wanted to be reimbursed for my stay. I was told I'd get a call back by 5 PM that day. Never happened. I tried getting a refund from Hotels.com and the agent spoke with Mike at the front desk. Because I didn't report bedbugs before checkout, Mike refused to refund me the $170 I paid and claimed Econo Lodge Traverse City has never had bedbugs before. He clearly doesn't read reviews since I've found plenty that report bedbugs! I had an allergic reaction and had to go to the doctor for a steroid shot.
Save your money and your sanity. Don't stay at this hotel. It needs to be fumigated, thoroughly cleaned, and staff properly trained in customer service before guests can safely stay here. Ignoring reviews about bedbugs and calling guests liars is not good business practice. To Mike: please learn to properly engage with guests. Educate yourself about how bedbug bites don't always show up overnight, pay attention to bedbug related reviews, and spend a night in your hotel if you think it's so safe and clean.
Deanna, we're sorry to hear about your distressing experience at one of our hotels. Your concerns regarding cleanliness, maintenance, and the bedbug infestation are completely understandable. Your safety and comfort are very important to us, and we appreciate you sharing this feedback.
Please send us a private message with your arrival date, reservation name, and phone number, email, and mailing address linked to your Choice Privileges account. We're here to assist you further. Thank you! ~Jen

A friend and I booked a 2 night stay at the Econo Lodge 127 Ontario Dr., Mt Hope, WV 304-877-6455 Oct 10-12, 2025 to visit Kaymore Mines in the area. We were hesitant upon check in as there were a lot of men loitering in the lobby and there was a girl working behind the counter who looked to be about 12. She was not the one who checked us in. We stayed against our better judgment because it was late. Room 106. My friend paid for one night- I paid for the other. The charges can be verified. The carpet in the room was stained, floor of shower dirty, rusted on the outside of the tub and the ceiling above was peeling and looked like it would eventually come down. We kept our luggage up on the desk, counter area and ironing board and did not unpack. Left nothing on the floor or beds.
Slept there the first night, checked out the continental breakfast which left much to be desired- coffee that we could not drink, juice that was watered down. No fresh options. We were out all day and came back late- slept there the second night and upon getting ready for the day and to check out found a bug crawling on one of the beds. Through Google we determined it was a bed bug. We were naturally upset. We got ready quickly and departed. We went to the desk to check out and to show the bug we collected. Spoke to a Laura who immediately called her manager AJ. She stated that she was going to secure the room and assured us the manager would refund us one night's charge. We left the bed bug with her. She said she was sure the bed bugs were from the many workers who stay there months at a time and decline room service. We received no paperwork at check in or check out. Lesson learned.
We simply left-anxious to get out of there. It is now Oct 27, 2025. After attempts (10/14/25 left msg with Jane and 10/15/25 left msg with Laura who remembered our situation) to call and reach the manager AJ- who apparently has no full name- his staff stated they do not know his full name- I have never had my calls returned nor have we received a refund. We know if there are bed bugs in 1 room they are all over this hotel. According to my research they crawl and are most likely transported on the people who clean the rooms as they go room to room as well as carrying sheets off infested beds.
We took precautions upon returning home and so far have not had an incident at our homes. Due to the refusal of the manager to return my calls and refusal of staff to give his name other than AJ or seem to care at all I have to assume bed bugs are regular occurrence at this hotel and of no concern. I will never look at a hotel room the same. I will always take precautions and leave if at all concerned about the facility. Beware!

If I could give this dump zero stars, I would. This is the most disgusting hotel in which I've ever stayed. My husband and I had never before been to Scranton but, after driving several hundred miles from New England, decided to spend one night in town before driving home to D.C. My husband made the reservation on his phone while I was driving; if we'd been able to read all the horrible reviews, there's no way we would have booked this dump.
After finally finding the hotel, no easy task, at around 10 p.m., the first thing we noticed was a stop work order that had been posted the day before on the front door. The hotel had started renovations without getting the appropriate permits, never a good sign. At the front desk, my husband overheard another guest ask for a different room because hers was overrun with cockroaches and she had her baby with her. On top of everything, the hotel literally stinks, in part because there are many smoking rooms.
I did not see any cockroaches in our room, but we couldn't watch TV because the volume had only one setting: deafening. It was just too late to find another room in a city we'd never visited. When I went to take a shower the next morning, I noticed hair and other materials in the bath tub. No TV, and no shower for us. The hallways were literally crumbling, the wallpaper and paint peeling. Choice Hotels, which owns the EconoLodge brand, gave us 8000 points to make up for our experience, but HARRON PATEL, the manager, didn't even have the courtesy to respond to my email, let alone refund the more than $90 we spent to stay less than 12 hours in that dump. STAY AWAY!!!
Your description of the stay is very concerning, and we understand how upsetting this must have been. We’d like to review your experience further. Could you please send us a private message with the booking information, your phone number, email, and mailing address? We look forward to assisting you. -Kathy

Paid too much for a 1st floor room ($90.00) for a 1 night stay from August 30 thru August 31, 2025, at Econo Lodge near RJ Stadium, Tampa, FL. Room had roaches and smelled, looked like it was partially flooded at one point and never cleaned properly. I couldn't get a full night's sleep because of all the noise next door and outside my room. I am a Choice Rewards member, but I will not stay at an Econo Lodge again. I've been trying to get a hold of the manager, but they're never 'available'. I'm very disappointed with this situation and would like a refund. I didn't even get a receipt for my stay.
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience, Julie. I’m truly sorry to hear about the condition of your room and the challenges you faced during your stay. I can say this hotel is pulling the worst place that I've ever stayed in my life. And it's disgusting. Smells like cat pee dog urine. There's dog feces all over the property. Step out of your car and you're stepping in a pile of dog feces. You can't get known as linen. You have to take your linen to the laundromat and wash it yourself if you want anything. Staff are rude and it seems like the whole staff is on drugs here mainly **. Ice machine is constantly broke down the rooms. Are sweltering hot and it took us 2 weeks to get our deposit back. A place I'll never stay again in my life. I wouldn't rent a room for my worst enemy here. I can't believe Choice Hotels is actually affiliated with this place. Remind me of Skid Row.
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback, Martin. Your concerns about cleanliness, staff behavior, and overall conditions are serious. All 3 front desk reps doesn't really care about the customers, only MONEY. Ask to speak to the owner and was told a lot of different things, I was disrespected by the guy that works front desk because my refrigerator quit working and he really got rude and snapped at me because of it.
My cousin fell down the stairs and they don't care and the younger girl was like he didn't fall all the way down with a snobby attitude. This place is the most horrible place when it comes to customer service and treating people right. Rooms are not up to date and disgusting, rooms smell like mold and mildew. Older lady at front desk is on something and can't focus and doesn't finish her task in hand, I went and told her that my AC isn't working properly and at night its not keeping cold. She brought cleaning supplies and said oh it needs cleaned I'm like umm no it don't it's making a loud noise and not keeping cold. She said F you to me just because she told me the owner was on property and I asked where I needed to talk with him. She said put the couch up against the AC and I'm like we do that every night and that has nothing to do with anything. GO SOMEWHERE ELSE.

Our reservation was at the Rodeway Inn (7300A West Broad st, Richmond VA) but apparently the building it's close and they sent us to the EconoLodge next to the Rodeway Inn. No problem with that, but the nightmare started as soon as we arrived in the room. First the bed linen was burned with cigarette butts and looks like it was not change for a new guest.
My husband went to the reception and the guy gave us other room with an upgrade (we laugh with it). We cannot see the room in detail because at that moment we just want it to go to sleep. For two days we only went to sleep late night but Sunday morning the sinus started to bother me. When I looked the AC unit I was in disbelief, covert in dust, and spider webs at the ceiling, loose toilet seat, shower curtain rod extremely rusty, dirty corners. The bed linen was burned too, and we ended buying bed linen Saturday night because we were too tired to fight with the receptionist and find a new hotel for the last night. They did not send the survey and no receipt, and we just run from there in horror.

We booked one night at the Econolodge in Fairlawn, Ohio because we were camping in a travel trailer and severe storms were expected. Figured a hotel room would be the best place to be. Paid over the phone before seeing the hotel. Big mistake. First issue was the couple that got off the bus and followed us in. Nothing wrong with them but they had no luggage and we figured they only needed the room for a couple hours. Carpet leading to our room was almost black with dirt. Got to our room and we were immediately disgusted. We both looked at each other and decided to forego the $90 we spent and risk our lives in our camper sitting a severe thunderstorm. We were in the room for about 60 seconds. Can’t imagine why Choice Hotels would want their name associated with this dump.

I tried to write this review in detail but I had to cut it shorter so it's more to the story. When arriving to this hotel after being guaranteed a room with a Choice rep we were turned away because I had a service dog. I was asked what was my disabilities which was validating and to bring in my dog to show in a crowded lobby where she sniffed everyone who passed her. When it was clear for me to go up to the front desk. I was told they canceled my reservation because they don't take no dogs of no sort and I have an aggressive breed (Pit). Then he said she didn't listen to any of my commands (I asked her to sit 2x and she sat on the 2nd). I asked did he call his boss and he informed me that he told him to cancel our reservation. I then explained to him how him and the other guy was violating a lot of my rights and breaking a lot of laws. He shrugged his shoulders like oh well.
I asked for my money back and he informed me to contact Choice to receive my refund. I let went into my car to contact Choice, as soon as I got someone on the line and told them what happened they informed me that was against the law. So my husband and I went back in to inform them while we had the lady on the phone but they wasn't trying to hear it so my husband told them we wasn't leaving until we get our money back. Him and the guy had some words and the guy decide to call the police stating he feel in danger we won't leave, we was threatening him, all kinds of lies. He even stepped in the back to talk to them so no telling what else he lied about.
We decided to stay so we could speak to the police so they would know we were the victims. When the police arrived we explained to them everything and informed him to check the cameras and also the 911 call where it was so silent you can hear pin drop and the guy claim we were right in front of him threatening him. As the police was there the Choice rep was still on the line and during the whole incident had put me on hold to speak to the front desk person. When she came back to the phone she informed us we would get a refund within 5-7 business days. Yesterday July 18th I called Choice and one rep informed my they refunded the point. I informed them I didn't want the points, I needed my money back and that's what I was told. So I asked to speak to a supervisor.
A supervisor came on, I explain what happened on the 4th. He then tells me that those points was used on that reservation. I told him that wasn't true, we never check in, then he said we was marked as a no show for that reservation. Again I told him that wasn't true, he needs to check the recorded conversation from the 4th and refund our money like we were told. He insisted he couldn't do so.
I will now be contacting a lawyer to start a suit. I informed them that. All they has to do was refund me my money. He told me to contact the hotel so they can fix it. I tried calling the hotel and it rang one time and hang up when I call from my phone. I then tried with my business phone and it rang and took me to the front desk. I asked for the manager but the person insisted to ask me can they help me and I insisted to speak to the manager or supervisor, they stated there was neither there. I then asked for their name, he stated Steve for the manager and he didn't know the supervisor name then gave me a bogus one for himself.

While the location of the University location in Tucson on Stone Ave. is convenient for an event I spent the night for, I wouldn’t come back here. The staff is friendly and helpful as a positive point, one of the few I can think of. As soon as I entered the parking lot, there were two police cars with officers investigating what the staff explained was a stolen car that had been dropped in the lot. I don't hold that against the hotel, as that's not their fault, but it was a sign of the quality of my stay to come.
The shower ceiling had what looked like mold or mildew on it, the shower floor was worn, and the shower head was dripping when I entered my room. I also woke up and found much of the floor of my room covered in water from either the air conditioner or whatever was behind the locked door in the room. Water damage/mold on the ceiling in the bathroom and water covering the floor of a room isn’t something I expect or want to encounter in a hotel stay. Luckily, I was only staying one night and left early the next morning.

Started the reservation At 7pm and got coffee that had curdles half and half. Went back to the room only to find it raining In our bathroom. I proceeded to complain to the front desk and said that could Switch us 2 rooms down and to take a look at it. I don't know about anyone else, but my idea of taking a look was to make sure that this room had no leaks or imperfections which would disturb our sleep the next morning. It was freezing, so my friend looked at the heating element and got stuck by something as we were trying to figure out what was sharp and he got stuck to empty syringes from behind onto the rug that made us want to continue searching. That’s when we search the whole room. Everything we found was hidden.
When I found was six bags of cracker least cocaine that I tried, which was stupid of me, but I want to make sure that it was legit before I reported it to syringes empty one metal pusher, one empty Superman bag without the tablets in it tons of broken glass And I tried that stuff I ended up in the ER. Sad part of it is they refuse to get my money back. Angela

DO NOT STAY AT THIS HOTEL. First problem was there would be days where the housekeeper didn’t even clean the room just would skip my room whether I was in it or not. I constantly had to ask for toilet paper, new sheets, and pillowcases. The general manager the ** guy gives just anyone hotel room keys. I had someone try to enter my room with a room key that worked and I did not authorize it nor was the person anywhere on my booking reservation. He is a bitter man who just this morning called my room repeatedly because an unwanted guest wanted in the room, he then kept knocking at my door and THREATENED ME who has been nothing but pleasant and has been staying here for weeks with no problem to kick me out and to call the police to escort me off property, just because the unwanted guest was causing a scene when any normal person would call the police and escort the guy with no reservation there off the property.
It blows my mind the lack of respect and professionalism this manager has. He is def in the wrong field and should be fired. I had to call corporate and my case is being escalated. Not worth the cheap price I promise. There is also heavy police activity at this specific hotel. I have seen multiple guests being handcuffed and arrested at this location during my stay.
Hello, Rae. Thank you for reaching out to us. I can imagine how frustrating this experience has been for you. Our guests deserve outstanding service, attention to quality, a safe place, and staff courtesy. Certainly, this does not represent the service we aim to deliver.

The econo Lodge in Sacramento was the dirtiest hotel I've ever stayed at in my life. The hotel was uncapped. The windows did not close or lock. There was mold on the bathroom ceiling and bathtub. The door to the bathroom was broken. The room was filthy. I was very disappointed.
The description and pictures let us down, Jolene, and we can understand your disappointment. My team wants to review this; to do so, please send us a private message with the full name on the reservation, arrival date, and the hotel's state, along with the reservation holder's mailing address, email, and phone number. My stay at Econo Lodge, Gainsville, FL on Aug 6, 2022 was a room without towels but plenty of roaches. This place should of been demolished. Customer service offered a free future stay at Choice Hotels of my choice but did not keep its promise. What was offered? Additional points added to my account. NO FREE NIGHT. Stay away from this line of hotels/motels.

Checked into the Hotel on 12-23-23 checking into room 204. Refrigerator broken, little shampoo bottle only half full. Spoke to Shane at desk. He gave me more shampoo. Next morning hair dryer very nasty at the touch and would not turn on. Went to front desk Emily try to help me find another room with possibly working hair dryer. 206 was not cleaned and prev customer complaint but hairdryer was nasty as well and did not turn on either. Had to go to a 3. room that customer just checked out in order to dry my hair. Emily wrote down all the detailed complaints.
