I noticed a difference 1st from my FF Beef In Gravy. It used to be dark brown gravy, now it's not! Also, the scent in 'all' FF seems to be stronger, not to mention others have gotten lighter in color also. Today, either cats of mine wouldn't eat their wet food at all! Anyone else?

Recently I bought Fancy Feast grilled wet cat food for my two cats - I bought 3 cases and returned them all - Not sure what Purina is doing but the quality has really down hill - the 1st can I opened seemed ok but the second can was awful - not sure what was in this can but it didn't look like it was supposed to - I would not feed this garbage to my cats in fear that they might get sick - I sent pictures and all the info to Purina and to date have not heard back from them - won't be buying this anymore!

I have been feeding my cats Fancy Feast canned food for years. Out of nowhere, both cats refused to eat the food. I tried a different flavor, same result. These cans were from a new batch I just bought. At the same time, they started vomiting multiple times a day and having diarrhea. Then the older one became lethargic. Both cat's vitals were normal, but they were both obviously very sick, complaining when I touch their bellies. After treating both cats for nausea, giving fluids, adding in antibiotics (over $1,000 later), I had them on Purina ProPlan EN for sensitive stomachs. They did really well on this, both returned to normal. Then last night, I eventually fed them each a 1/2 can of Fancy Feast after I ran out of prescription canned food. This morning, the older one is listless again, refusing to eat, complaining when I touch her belly again.

I was searching to find out why I can't buy Fancy Feast grilled turkey and giblets anymore and found that they are discontinuing it. To my horror I came across all of these stories about cats being sick and now it all makes sense. My cat got real sick last May, just like all the others on here vomiting, not eating and after more than a $1000 in vet bills she was put on a prescription diet and got better. Just before this happened for probably the previous 6 months leading up to it she gradually would quit eating various flavors of fancy feast and was losing weight and eventually she was throwing up and refusing to eat and she had a high fever for several days when she was at her sickest. I'd find flavors that she would eat and then all of a sudden she wouldn't eat them.
After she got better on the prescription diet I tried switching her back to fancy feast and she was still real picky and would pretty much only eat the turkey and giblets and chicken hearts and liver. Now I find they are going to stop making both of them. I had at times noticed the changes in the smell and texture of certain cans or flavors. She loved that food and now the last 2 flavors she would eat are going away. Probably 2 of the flavors they hadn't messed with yet because they are just going to be discontinued.
Reading all this it sounds like it may be a blessing in disguise and I just can't believe there were all these issues and nothing was done. It seems the evidence is pretty overwhelming that this food and the changes made has sickened many cats. As others said, I have feral cats I feed regularly as well, usually just dry food and I was just about to take out the probably 100 cans I have of the flavors my cat quit eating and I'm sure glad I saw all these reviews first. I'm throwing all of it out. I'm also going to be asking my vet some questions they better have the right answers to. They had to have known something about this and didn't say anything, they knew I fed her fancy feast. Almost like they knew their was an issue with the food she was eating but instead of saying it was the fancy feast they wanted to sell me the expensive prescription food when they could have just said to switch her to anything not made by Purina and she would probably get better.

Been.. buying Fancy Feast dry food since it came on the market... my last bag I bought notes on the front no dyes... that was new.. upon opening the bag I did notice it's all one color now. I went to their website and it says new formula... well... my four cats will not touch any of the dry food anymore... they have changed more than removing the dye... I now have to find something they will all eat.. Fortunately I still had a bag that had not been changed.... the smell between the two is also very noticeable...goodbye fancy feast.

If I could give Fancy Feast a 0/5 stars I would. We had 2 cats that were basically raised on Fancy Feast, suddenly a few years ago one of the cats would refuse to eat any other food, or any other flavor other than salmon and shrimp. He began vomiting, losing weight and unfortunately we believe he developed cancer and we had to euthanize him. A few months ago, our other cat began to only want the salmon and shrimp flavor, began vomiting after eating, losing weight was heading down the same road as our other cat. I stopped feeding him Fancy Feast, looked into other brands and found Open Farm. Since starting Peach on the Open Farm food he has gained weight back and has stopped vomiting, he is more spunky and I whole heartedly believe Fancy Feast, whatever is in their food, is killing cats. For some background, my cats have been healthy their entire lives, never had any medical problems.

Their quality has gone down considerably. I don’t have any issues with my cats not eating it or getting sick. What I’ve been seeing for some time is huge chunks in all of the grilled varieties. Way bigger than there was before and consistently huge and sometimes ridiculously large. When I open a can 90% of the time I have to use kitchen shears to chop up the huge chunks into smaller bite sized bits, like it used to be before straight out of the can. I realize it isn’t gourmet cat food, but it was a few steps up from the cheap stuff. Not so much anymore and disappointing…

I have been a loyal Friskies and FF consumer with my 2 cats since 2012. Friskies Poultry Mix and FF poultry grilled to be specific. Noticed package change on Friskies with formula change noted. Both indoor only cats, 12 and 16, became very ill with vomit and diarrhea. Stopped Friskies and tried using only the Fancy Feast. Noticed large rubbery pieces. Cats are constipated with black stool and throw up whole serving in whole pieces 3 hours after eating. What has happened to this brand?!
I am pleading with Purina to re examine the formulas and quality control of ingredients. My friend is having same problem with the Purina Pro Plan salmon for sensitive dogs after using it for over 3 years! Dog won't touch it now. I will sadly switch out to different company and let every dog and cat person know that Purina is no longer a safe food from my recent experience. PLEASE figure out the problem so customers can rely on your brand again. I am no longer a customer for now and as a pet lover I will use every social avenue to better advertise this dangerous product hidden under the fake five and four star reviews. Customers are not stupid. If their animals are becoming sick they will know they have been lied to. I plan to have food tested by an independent lab to discover the problem. I hope Purina does same.

I have been feeding my cats Fancy Feast Seafood pate for many years. I have found these large beige rubbery pieces in the cod, sole and shrimp pate in 2 different cans this week. I contacted Purina and they said "The material you have identified is a protein that is naturally occurring from the real ingredients used in the manufacturing of our products. The real ingredients used in the production of this product are ground in their natural state, however, there can be variation in the texture, size, and color of the food." Updated on 07/10/2024: My cats have been enjoying Fancy Feast Seafood Pate for years. On this last purchase they won’t even touch it! I contacted Purina and basically told me too bad. So I decided to try a different Fancy Feast flavor for my cats. I ordered it from Chewy. I opened up a can and it smells like rotted meat! Why is there so many issues?
Original Review: I’ve been using Fancy Feast Seafood Pate for more than 13yrs. All of a sudden the smell has changed and my cats won’t touch any of the three varieties. They won’t even touch it and my 9yr old female started throwing it up when she tried to eat it. I opened several cans and got the same reaction to all of them. I contacted Purina on “X” and their reply to me was that all they changed was the color additives. They said that my cats should get back to liking it once they get adjusted to it. Mmm, don’t think so.

I have experienced the same issues as others have: color changes, little gravy in "gravy lovers" food. Those changes started happening during Covid. You would get a good batch once in a while. Now, June 2024, I've been finding lots of bones in the classic pate food, especially the beef. It looks the the large cans of Friskies only much more expensive. Very unhappy. My cats have loved the brown gravy in the beef feast. It is no longer brown and there's very little gravy, just large chunks that have to be cut. Is it possible they're substituting Fancy Feast with Friskies catfood? I feed 8 cats. Why should I pay $1 to $1.45 (savory centers) for Friskies quality?

He got pancreatic cancer and I think it was his food. I've called to complain and was brushed off then they hung up on me. I've spent a fortune on my cats for past 20 yrs but not one more penny will go to Purina now. They raised their prices but quality is horrible and now their food is making all my cats sick. I have been trying to switch out their food but I can't find anything they all will eat like they used to when Fancyfeast was good. Any recommendations? Tempted to make my own wet cat food for them. My two 15 year old cats have been fed Purina Fancy Feast Classic Pate (poultry & fish recipes) for many years with no issues. In the past few months we have added a few Gourmet Naturals for variety. Suddenly both cats are rejecting the wet food. I am dumping more than they are eating which is very costly. In addition, after eating, they have been throwing up after their meals. I've read that Purina is changing the formula to eliminate artificial preservatives & colors, but I feel something else is going on to make this food smell bad & the cats turning their noses up at mealtimes & getting sick. I'm done with Purina & switching to a vet recommended home cooked diet with added supplements. My cats deserve better than whatever Purina is producing. Obviously from these reviews something is not right & pets are suffering.

I’ve tried all different flavors and same happens with all of them. The cat food is extremely dry which my cats love the gravy. Nothing now. Please analyze what went wrong with your recipes and go back to the original and please don’t cut costs. What I buy is between $.95 and $1.35 a small can, I can’t afford to toss it out. Thank you.

Our 12 year old cat has loved Fancy Feast since she was a kitten, and it was the only wet cat food she would eat. In the past six months, we've noticed it looks different, smells different, and... She's gone from wolfing it down, to mostly licking the gravy off, to not wanting to eat it. This has been expensive as we tried different types within the brand. Something seems way more different than what the company is claiming. (They took out preservatives.). Why would that completely change the texture, look and smell? We're done. If anyone has other brands your cat now does like, please share. We're at our wits end with paying for and then giving or throwing away cans (and a couple whole cases.).

Fancy Feast Fish and Shrimp Feast Flaked used to be a favorite of my cats (and was wonderful to hide medication in) but the last time I purchased it, it was brown and old looking, there were whole pieces of fish skin in the food, and too many bones to pick out, so I had to dispose of it. Some of the pieces of fish were sharp and hard as plastic! I also purchased a 12 count case of FF Gourmet Naturals Pate in Beef Flavor, as I thought it was a healthier choice for my cats, but when I got to the bottom of the can, I saw pieces of the can had come off and were floating in the food. The bottom of the can looked like it had been scratched off or it was a used can, rather than a brand new product.
Unfortunately, my cats had already eaten some of the food before I discovered this. I am extremely worried about their health now and I hope they do not have any health issues from this. I thought it was just the one can that was like this, or my spoon may have scraped the can, so I opened more cans and I dumped the contents out without using a spoon, and all of the cans were in the same condition. I wasted a lot of money on this food, which is very upsetting as I have 14 cats in my care whom I am the sole guardian for after losing my mom to cancer, and I am not working due to caring for my grandmother who has congestive heart failure, so money cannot afford to be wasted.
I have had issues with Purina in the past - their dry Purine One dry food - the Tender Selects Chicken Flavor - made my cats vomit constantly and Purina reps were evasive when I asked them if one of their products, the Purina Cat Chow Sensitive Stomach dry food, was made in China) but my cats needed to eat more wet food per my vet's recommendation for urinary issues so I thought I would give Purina one last chance. I will not be buying any of their products again. For the health of their consumers changes need to be made to this food because it is definitely NOT safe and for the price of the food these cans should be in way better shape than this. Thoroughly disgusted and disappointed.

First of all I want to say FF is all my 6 yr old kitty little girl has ever liked. Something has definitely changed since COVID hit the US. I started noticing there were color changes of the meat (a grayish brown color), as well as the wet food being shriveled up away from the edges of the can and dry looking. My cat loves 3 different paté flavors but won't touch any of them anymore. I have complained to Chewy and they replaced the case I bought with another one but my cat or my mother's 3 cats wouldn't eat it. I have returned unopened cans to Krogers grocery store as well.
I can always tell, as soon as I open a can, if my kitty will eat it or not. I usually open anywhere between 1 to 3 different flavors a day, to try and get my kitty to eat 1 of them, but she'll take one lick and back away from her dish. My kitty constantly begs me for food all day long and it becomes so annoying day after day. Oh yeah, I've bought other brands but she won't eat them, at all. She loves ff but they have had to changed their ingredients, since the pandemic. I feed the strays what my cat won't eat but I have seen them walk away from some of the ff and that's bad when a hungry stray won't eat it, either!
I get that some ingredients are hard to come by but don't just "wing it" for sales! I buy, at the very least 30 cans a month and try to keep stocked up because you never know what could happen! I'm just saying You may not be able to buy any for a while, the way our country is being ran these days. I really wish I had all the money that I have thrown away on these "hit or miss" cans of ff!
And another thing, I've talked to other customers in the stores that I've bought the ff at and they agree that something has changed as well, I even talked to store clerks at 2 different PetSmarts and they told me they've received complaints about ff, as well. Fancy Feast, please stop substituting some of the ingredients and bring back the original ingredients. But no matter what, I'm on a mission to find a different wet cat food company, I'd like to see my kitty eat good, again! Sincerely Christene from Columbus, Ohio

IT'S A LIE...Slowly.. They disguise the "switcharoo" with NEW wrapping..Thinking we won't notice..But they can't fool my cat...At first both kinds were available. That's was the transitioning period..Now..the big stores Amazon..Walmart. etc. only carry the GARBAGE..

Yes..but what IS worse, is having to watch as with each new food wreaks havoc with her digestive system..Diarrhea. Regurgitating..Watching her trepidation as she approaches her food bowl..And WW2. 1 It's hard to find a brand that offers a simple fare..Primarily meat..I've never seen a cat purposely munching on blueberries or sweet potato..But we've all seen them chomping on greens..I'm really angry with Purina..All this upheaval...Just to make MORE MONEY..Take a good product. Any wet food is better to feed your cat than a kibble. Cats don't have a natural thirst drive so the more moisture you can get in their diet, the better. Most cats succumb to kidney failure at some age. By feeding a can a day you can help your pet live a longer life. AND, it's like ** for cats. They will howl for it. My cats are addicted to the gravy Fancy Feast.

Our boy Charlie turned 21 in October. As he's aged he's become very picky and has been at times, it's very difficult to keep weight on him. The vet suggested a high calorie prescription food but nothing we could do would make him eat it. Then my daughter reminded me of how much he LOVED Fancy Feast pate when he was young. In fact we'd only stopped using it because my daughter wanted to try him on a home made poultry and fish diet. He'd loved that for years but was no longer eating it! So we tried the Fancy Feast salmon pate and he ate the entire thing in one sitting! It's been about a year now and he is loving his Fancy Feast! In fact, we've found him sneaking off to eat his brothers food if it's not eaten right away. Thanks to Fancy Feast, and my daughter's great memory, our Charlie is still going strong.

I have been buying Fancy Feast Ocean Whitefish Pate for all of my cats for over 15 years. A couple of months ago I started noticing it was hard to find any at my local grocery stores. I was able to find it online and ordered from as many places as I could, since it's all my cats will eat. I noticed that the texture and color had changed. Then my cats got severely ill (severe vomiting and diarrhea.) I tried giving them different food but they did not want it. I tried giving them Fancy Feast from a new batch (new sell by date) and they became ill again.
I called Purina to issue a complaint and they said the ingredients had not changed and offered me a coupon for other Fancy Feast products (just what I want). All of the cans I've bought with sell by dates of Aug. 2023, Sept. 2023 and Oct. 2023 have been bad. The food looks darker than normal and seems "mealy". After reading the alarming stories in these reviews and I am completely shocked that this food has not been recalled.

Updated on 10/21/2025: This is a follow-up review to the review I posted here in 2021. Fancy Feast made my cats violently ill, with non-stop vomiting and diarrhea. I wanted to let you know the sad news that both of these cats died within a year and a half and two years of the incident. I ended up getting a check written to me for their care by the company. To me, this lets me know that they knew that there was some contamination. I was just grateful when the issue seemed to resolve. One cat died of kidney cancer at a very young age. And the other cat had always been so healthy and died much younger than I have had any of my cats die. Neither lasted even 2 years past the poisoning.
I am convinced that the damage caused by whatever contaminant was in that food they ate dramatically shortened their lifespan. Never leave food down if your cat turns their nose up at it. You might think they're just being picky but they probably sense something is wrong. Their sense of smell is so much more powerful than ours. I never would have guessed something like this could have happened. I see it has seemingly start up again now in 2024/2025 with so many people having their cats sickened and the same symptoms. Certain mycotoxins are known to cause kidney cancer in animals. I'm thinking now it was an ochratoxin, which has been demonstrated to cause kidney cancers in animals. Please avoid this product and please hold them accountable. Don't accept coupons and bs excuses. They wrote me a check for a reason. They were afraid of social media and people hearing what had happened
Original Review: I have two cats, one just over ten years and the other just under five years old. They are indoor cats and do not encounter any other animals. They actually don't even encounter each other as they take turns having the run of the house. They have always been very healthy with no problems. I had been feeding them Fancy Feast for a number of years without problems. They have always been gluttonous in their appetites and suddenly they began rejecting this food, both at the exact same time. I stopped feeding it to them but they got violently ill.
Both cats have experienced extensive vomiting followed by diarrhea that I cannot stop and it has been well over a week now. They are taking ** and over-the-counter **. I don't know what was in that food but it had to be either infectious, a new allergen or a toxin like lead. Vet that has already charged me over $400 and wants to run thousands of dollars more in tests. You can't convince me that this does not have something to do with the breakdown in the supply chain. Something has either been substituted or quality control has gone by the wayside. I have contacted the company and they tried to give me coupons and wave me away and I told them to burn the coupons.
Don't accept that when they offer it. Open a case against them. Make them do it. Document as well as you can and save all vet bills. We really need to join up in a class action lawsuit against this company. We need to pool our information and resources and make them accountable. People have already begun to lose their loved fur babies to this complete lack of oversight on the part of Nestle Purina. Do not feed any Fancy Feast to your cats at this time. It is obviously too dangerous and it will end up costing you a lot. I will never again in this lifetime use anything produced by Nestle Purina. I am seeking a pro bono lab to do toxicology and microbial testing on the food I still have. We need to create a public online site to meet and discuss this. I hope my cat survive and I hope yours is do too.

Finally found something they would all eat, Fancy Feast classics pate seafood variety pack and the Fancy Feast Grilled seafood variety pack. The cats have been eating this everyday for the past few years along with their daily bowls of dry food and are all healthy and doing well. They get no cat treats of any kind. They have never had any urinary, diarrhea, bowel or vomiting issues. They get great reports on their yearly Veterinary visits.

Then my other cat has been vomiting, thinking it's because she's been overeating, but then she started having diarrhea. Our third cat start vomiting and now won't eat. We had to put our youngest down a week ago because the vet believed it's for the best. I was truly heartbroken. Last week my 12 year old cat became violently ill with projectile vomiting and severe diarrhea. I took him to the vet and stool, urine and blood samples led them to believe he had food poisoning. The ONLY food he eats is Fancy Feast pâté. He had several varieties, including fish and shrimp, beef, and chicken. It was the fish and shrimp that made him ill. He ended up on a round of antibiotics after several days at the vet and receiving fluids and anti nausea meds. I returned the batch that had made him sick and bought a new flavor and more recent batch. When I opened it it smelled bad. He also would not touch it. Switched to a new brand and he’s doing better.
I went to grab the other cans to return and several are swollen like they’re ready to pop. They were not even from the same store this time. I will never give my pet this food again. Over $1000+ in vet bills and pain for my cat who is still not himself. When I posted on Facebook, countless others also had cats get violently ill in the same time frame. Some died. I believe that they cut corners, possibly due to pandemic related complications. Our pets deserve better treatment. The company should be ashamed.

I have 4 cats. Two of them eat Fancy Feast Savory Centers (chicken, beef). Two of them eat Fancy Feast regular Pate' (no fish flavors). The Savory Ctr cats are absolutely perfect, no issues. The Pate' cats have suddenly developed jello like diarrhea. There's been no changes in their diet, there is nothing in my house that they could have gotten into (no plants, no human food, no cleaners, nothing - I've very particular about having a cat safe home). The ONLY thing different in their lives vs the other two is the Fancy Feast Pate' vs Savory Ctr's (which has been VERY difficult to acquire for the past 8 months, it's a hit and miss with a can here and there if I'm lucky - of course, Purina gives you some ** excuse why). So, it's impossible to have all 4 cats on the Savory Ctr's due to supply shortage.
There is something going on with the Pate' food (chicken, chicken feast, and beef feast) that has generated this jelly blob-like stool, parasites are negative and it has to be the Pate' that has changed. I am seriously disappointed in whatever Purina has done to change this food resulting in this diarrhea!!!! They are not vomiting, but what they are expelling from the other end has such a NASTY odor that it clears the room where their boxes are - they have NEVER had this kind of foul odor. I have 1.5 cases of this stuff now and it's getting trashed!!! Purina has gone in the crapper this past year and it's time to move on. I have been fostering local kittens since April 2020. I buy a 24 pack case of Fancy Feast Pate Kitten every 2 days. EVERY kitten I've fostered has been mildly to severely ill. I attributed their poor health to being born outside, under houses, in barns or abandoned and unvaccinated. However, even after they had been properly cared for, they would end up sick again every 3-4 weeks. It's been a vicious cycle and they only seemed to be getting sicker every time. They throw up, had diarrhea, even blood in their stool, followed by upper respiratory infections and conjunctivitis. In the past few weeks, my 7 month old foster (Taki) lost 1.3 pounds and she was already struggling to keep weight on. I have always trusted Purina Fancy Feast as they have never had a recall "officially". I never even considered the food being the issue.
I thought I was going to lose my foster Taki a few days ago. She refused to eat (my other 5 fosters were barely eating too) so I whipped up some homemade cat food. I made sure to follow all the nutritional advice and my cats scarfed it down. I've never seen my cats devour their food. Even Taki (who refused to eat and was very lethargic and dehydrated) enhaled her food and was full of energy and playing with the other cats after. Taki's health (as well as the others) have dramatically improved in just a matter of days. There is definitely something wrong with Purina's Fancy Feast Pate Kitten food. It needs to be investigated immediately. I will be first in line for a class action lawsuit! I have poured so much money into this food and vet bills trying to save these fur babies, while this whole entire time the FOOD was the problem. Puking, diarrhea, lethargy, all the bad stuff. I came home one evening to a litter box full of blood/mucus and 2 of my cats seemed sick, but still ate/drank. My 5yr old, the eldest, I found laying in my basement unable to stand or move in a pile of vomit. $2,500 in vet bills and a 5 night stay at the vet she's back home. I vowed not to buy this brand again.
However, another rush of panic buying meant fancy feast was all that was left in flavours my cats ate. The last 4 days, I've been cleaning up vomit. I wasn't positive it was the food at first, until I opened a can and my youngest gobbled it down, started heaving, and proceeded to vomit it all back up into the bowl. The middle cat ran to my bedroom and threw it up, the eldest wouldn't touch it. I wish I could include a photo, but I will give detailed information of the batch code/box/flavour instead. It was a case of Medleys, Florentine collection. Wild salmon florentine was the one immediately puked back up within seconds. Best before date Aug 2022, 02428331 11:17 L020272.

We have 2 indoor cats, dry food only. February 2020 my older one stopped eating. Of course she lost weight. She was 14 and I thought maybe she just couldn't chew/swallow dry food anymore. So I bought a couple of cans of Fancy Feast Beef Pate. She liked it and did perk up some. So I bought a whole case from Amazon. That's a lot of money for someone on disability.
Over the next few weeks she ate less and less until she was down to about 2 tablespoons a day. She was still drinking water and using the litter box. She needed a stool to jump in my lap. But she was still my loving kitty. One night mid-March, about a month after starting Fancy Feast, she started lurching a few steps forward and falling down. She seemed really weak. I knew this day was coming and spent the next 12 hours moving her food bowl to where ever she was, giving her water with a dropper and making sure she knew how much I loved her. I fell asleep. Woke up 2 hours later and she was dead. I thought I would die but I knew she was old. I had a younger cat to take care of. So I kept going. BTW the younger cat flat out refused to eat the Fancy Feast wet food from the start.
I mourned the loss of my older cat and focused all my love and attention on my younger cat and little dog. But the cat still refused to touch the Fancy Feast wet food. I stopped opening and wasting it. My son and ex-husband live in a different town from me. They always have a houseful of cats. But my son has a cat that he loves more than anything. She was born in 2004 so she was 16 years old. I sent all the unopened cans of Fancy Feast wet food to their house for his kitty. My ex has a favorite cat also. He can't afford wet food for all those kitties. But those 2 favorites were given the wet food starting a few weeks ago. The 16 year old died Tuesday. We all chalked it up to old age. We all loved her and are sick with grief. 5 days later the other cat that ate the Fancy Feast wet food was found dead. She was young and healthy.
That's too much of a coincidence for me. Approximately 10 cat's live in these 2 different households. Only 3 of them ate from the same case of Fancy Feast Beef Pate wet food and all 3 of them died within weeks of being switched to that food. All of the 6 or 7 other cats, in both houses that didn't eat Fancy Feast are perfectly fine. Somebody needs to do something.

The sauces are in gravy, with milk, garden greens, savory sauces, gravy lovers, creamy delights, natural gravies, and savory centers. The beef and liver have had an oily odor, and most of the flavors seem to be more watery than I can recall. She seems to like it when it first comes out of the can, but if it sits at all, she won’t touch it. I see a lot of other reviews similar to mine, and I’m concerned. How does this get checked out?

Our 11 year old cat has been eating Fancy Feast wet food his whole life without any issues. He has always been healthy, happy, and very playful. Just recently, he started vomiting aggressively (an abnormal amount), and stopped eating completely both his wet and dry food. It had been over 24 hours since he had any food or water, and his behaviour had gotten very abnormal, we could tell something was wrong. He would sleep all the time and had gotten very very weak. We took him to emergency and he was hospitalized for two nights. They had to put him on IV fluids because he could not eat on his own. The vet suspected either an infection, kidney failure, or worst case lymphoma, and booked him an ultrasound. They put him on antibiotics in case of infection, and the next day he started looking better and eating on his own.
Today we brought him home. He was hungry and we made a mistake in feeding him his regular fancy feast wet food because we had no idea that this could be causing the problem. Just after feeding him, we stumbled across the reviews where we saw that HUNDREDS of cats have been getting ill recently and going through the exact same thing. Hopefully he doesn't get sick all over again. We will never be feeding him fancy feast or any Purina products ever again! It could have killed him!

Two weeks ago I bought FF for my 10 soon to be 11 year old cat. She was relatively healthy and never ever showed any signs of sickness. She was always active and never had any underlying conditions when I took her for checkups. Recently I did research online to take better care of my senior cat. Adding water to kibble and adding canned wet food to your cat's diet helps with dehydration and Loss of electrolytes that’s why I bought the FF. I wanted to spoil her just a bit and give her a bit of kibble in the morning with some added water and gave her FF at night. At first everything was fine she loved the white ocean fish in gravy and her absolute absolute favorite was some shrimp flavored one.
After a week and a half in I noticed one day that my cat had vomited on the floor. Didn’t really think anything of it when I checked up on her and she was her same usual self. Thought she may have just eaten too fast. Another two days later I noticed vomit again but was in more locations. She was fine but I then decided to lay off the wet food for a little bit and took it away for at least another 4 days. After the break when I fed her the wet food again she violently vomited everywhere right after she ate it and not to be gross and TMI but after she vomited the actual food up which was brown in color she was vomiting this gross pink liquid everywhere which I can only assume was byproduct? Then she started to to throw up white vile.
Without hesitation I took her to an emergency vet. The doctor told me that her right kidney showed a bit of inflammation but couldn’t really tell me what was really with wrong with her unless labs were done which I did because nothing was physically wrong with her and get a diagnosis the next morning. From that day forward she became severely ill. During the night hours she became lethargic and unresponsive to my calls. She wouldn’t eat, go to the bathroom, just lay in a specific part of the house. I of course was freaking out. I constantly checked on her to see if she was even breathing. I didn’t want to touch and disturb her just wanted her to rest. Even slept in the living room to make sure she was fine.
After I fell asleep I woke in the early a.m to her meowing to get my attention and to my horror she had moved closer to me but she was scooting her body not being able to use her limbs. I grabbed her pet bed and relocated her on it and I never left her side. Did everything I could to comfort her and even played soft music for her to calm her and have her fall asleep. I was crying and praying so hard for her to be able to come out of it but doubts were flooding my mind. After finally being able to fall asleep once more she meowed again around 7a.m. to get my attention but this time in a weak raspy way this time she was paralyzed from the neck down unable to move or do anything.
I immediately called the vet to get the results from her tests and unfortunately I got bad news. My baby girl was going into acute kidney failure and that the best option was to put her down immediately. My heart sank. I was ugly crying and getting so angry in the other room blaming myself for killing her. Giving this poison to her. So of course I said my goodbyes and had to watch my little girl get euthanized made sure she knew I was there for her till the very end. And like I said before I have done checkups on her with labs and she was not diagnosed with early signs of renal issues. I swear this food killed my cat. Or if she was already sick and didn’t know definitely escalated her death. I don’t know. Just feed this stuff with caution. If you notice vomit stop feeding this stuff immediately.

They did have some vomiting last week and I thought maybe they had eaten too fast or a hair ball but this doesn’t add up. I went to the pet store and bought five different high quality dry foods. None will even try them. I bought various canned foods and they won’t try them. What is wrong? Taking two to the vet tomorrow morning. Very concerned! Have they poisoned my cats???? I came here to this website, as I have been researching any issues anyone has been experiencing with Fancy Feast. My big, beautiful, robust, healthy, indoor only cat died this week of acute kidney failure. Never a picky eater, he started throwing up his food before he was hospitalized with acute kidney failure. I've been feeding all my cats Fancy Feast Classic Pate variety for many years, all my cats loved it and would lick their plates clean.
Just recently (around Dec/Jan 2020) I decided to try the FF Medley's line (Primavera & Florentine). At first they all loved Medley, now they wont eat it. All my cats used to line up and love Fancy Feast Classic pate (all varieties). Now I'm throwing half of it away in the garbage because either they don't eat it or they lick it and then walk away. None of my other cats are throwing up, but they are not really eating the food. I'm getting rid of all of it and switching them to a different wet food. The fact that my seemingly healthy cat (never had any health issues) just died of Kidney failure after bouts of vomiting and my other cats are turning up their noses to the food leads me to believe there is SOMETHING WRONG with the food.

I have been feeding my two cats Purina Fancy Feast Grilled Collection for over a year. The older one has always been finicky about this brand and will only eat the Seafood varieties. She won't even go near the Poultry & Beef. My other cat pretty much wolfs anything down, so he he gets stuck with strictly the Poultry & Beef varieties. In early March, he started to vomit every day. I was away on business and came home to severe sickness. I took him to the vet immediately and after $1,200+ worth of testing they ruled out an internal blockage, kidney issues, infection, etc. But he had lost 2 lbs and was running a fever. They were telling me I might need an ultrasound and to put him under but they couldn't be sure what the real cause was. I was distraught because there seem to be nothing I could do. Plus I didn't want to keep throwing thousands of dollars down the drain without something more concrete to go on.
These went on for more than a month with back and forth vet visits and different meds and more bills. A friend, who used to be a vet tech, asked if I had recently switched foods, which I hadn't, and her response was that I stop feeding the wet food for a while as a test. And then I did a Google search to see if others were experiencing anything and stumbled upon all these reviews of cats getting sick. The DAY I STOPPED FEEDING, he stopped vomiting and hasn't had an issue since! Now I wonder if my other cat knew all along that something was wrong because she wouldn't touch the stuff.
STAY AWAY. This is not safe for your babies. I won't even donate the leftover cans to a shelter or cat rescue because I know it's terrible. What a waste! I hope Purina does something about this and all the negative (and recent!) reviews. Product info: Poultry & Beef Grilled Collection is best before Nov. 2021 and has round pull tabs. The Seafood Grilled Collection is best before Dec. 2021 and also has round tabs.

Started my cat on wet food after 6 month, the only thing she would eat was FF grilled salmon, tuna or turkey nothing else, after 7 years she will now eat other flavours as well. She now comfortably eats about 2.5 cans a day. In 2015 there was a bad batch (about 2 month) of grilled salmon, the cat wouldn't touch and just recently the January 2020 to February 2020 she vomits but then asks for another can straight away. Only vomits if she has more than 3 cans a day. A part from that shes a healthy 16 pounder with no medical problems ever. Sure FF isn't particularly healthy for a cat, but Italian food isn't particularly healthy for human and I'd rather have Italian than vegy/soya burgers and I'm not going to get my cat to ran a marathon. About 4-5 months ago, I noticed all 3 of my cats aren't eating any of their favorite Fancy Feast canned flavors. So I bought more, different flavors thinking they were just getting picky. Then, I noticed a couple of my cats would go outside and vomit right after eating (at this point, they would just lick the gravy and not touch the chicken, seafood, or beef. Grilled Chicken and Cheddar in gravy was their FAVORITE, and now I'm stuck with 4 cases that I wouldn't even throw out for the strays and raccoons! I started smelling every can I opened, and it was AWFUL. SOMETHING IS WRONG!!!
I emailed Purina asking them if they have changed recipes or possibly the cans themselves (I've noticed some cans are gold instead of silver). And all numbers on the bottom of each can per case ended in 1157, 1159, mostly 1160, and now 1162. Purina ASSURED me that they have changed nothing and have no recalls, but reading so many similar reviews, it's obvious something is horribly wrong and Purina is covering it up, or just not caring to look into all of these complaints. So what did they send me? Coupons for more crappy cans!
I also notified Chewy.com, where I ordered my last 4 cases and alerted them to the fact this food is bad. The person I spoke to was reading these reviews while on the phone with me and called a manager over. They may have stopped selling it temporarily, but they were horrified to learn they may be sending contaminated food to their customers. Hopefully they have some power to get Purina to take this seriously before people start losing their pets and filing lawsuits. My cats won't eat anything else but Sheba, but that is SO expensive for so little amount per serving. So I don't know what to do now.

Yesterday one of the cats literally picked out the pieces of fresh tuna I had mixed in and avoided all the wet food. I finally realized that the cats aren't the issue. It's Fancy Feast! Then the Siamese stopped eating all Fancy Feast; he would eat only dry food. The younger one (Ragdoll) continued to eat Fancy Feast. I decided to have him finish all the boxes of Fancy Feast before I tried something new. Expiry dates are still good. But he got tired of eating the last flavour and I purchased a few cans of Fancy Feast medleys brand. Initially he gulped it down. Then he got severe diarrhea and I had to rush him to the vet.
He was getting better and my grandson accidentally fed him a bit from the medleys can. He lay around all day and finally threw it up. Now eating dry food and another brand of wet food as a treat. I think that the Fancy Feast formula has recently changed, or the place where the food is produced (somewhere in China) has become contaminated given all the recent reviews of Fancy Feast. If I empty out the can and weigh it and do the math up to 1 lb it is cheaper to buy chop meat; human grade and add cat vitamins and Taurine myself. One way or the other there is stuff in there I do not want to give to my animals. No I haven't done HPLC testing on the suspected substance, I still don't like it. I found F F Savory Centers and she loved it and didn’t throw up. I forgot where I bought it and went on a hunt in & near my town to find it again. Let me tell you most stores with pet food do not carry it. Finally found it at Walmart & PetSmart but not all those stores have it. I could have cases shipped to me but they are variety packs and my cat won’t eat beef so I buy individual cans. It’s been about 2 months now and she luvs it & hasn’t thrown up once! One downfall is she’s hungry more often. I think because it’s lighter than most cat foods.

I've been buying Fancy Feast canned food for many years. All my cats enjoyed it and it was conveniently sold in supermarkets. Now they stopped eating it but it's mostly the PATE. They will not touch it. Has Purina changed the formula? Is Fancy Feast made in different factories throughout the USA or is it now made in East Asia? If made in Asia it could contain almost anything - not much factory supervision. Don't know what to do - I'm afraid to give it to my cats anymore.

Just like majority of the reviews here, it made my cat very sick. We decided to try something different and bought some Fancy Feast. Fed him this for a few days before realising how bad it was. He is an outdoor cat so we didn’t see his vomit straight away. He began acting really strange and upset. His meow changed and his coat started to look terrible. Then I saw his vomit and I knew it was the food. We changed it straight away and he is a happy cat again.

My cat is throwing up violently, she looks like she is dazed, she is lethargic, sleeping way too much. All I can say is I have been feeding her Fancy Feast canned cat food for years, but for about a week now, she is not herself, she is throwing up violently, several times a day. She has not eaten or drank water for two days now. Her throw up is usually a watered down pink color. Once or twice today, the throw up is a deep brown color. After reading the bad experiences other people's cats are suffering, with feeding FF canned food, I will be buying a premium cat food for my cat not FF. This is terrible, what is going on Purina? I love my cat, I trusted Purina. I am praying my cat gets better, when I change her cat food..

I’m a pet sitter and many of my clients use all different types of Fancy Feast. I also work with a rescue group. I see cats with all kinds of medical problems from allergies to IBS. One thing I’ve noticed is that most of these cats eat Fancy Feast. It’s especially worse if they eat the Gravy Lovers type. This is made with wheat gluten and gravy. Cats can’t digest wheat gluten. Whenever I see a cat with a poor hair coat they’re eating this. As they get older they start vomiting and eventually get very sick. Most of my clients are educated and have money. I ask myself, why would they feed this poor quality cat food. Would they let their kids live on Twinkies and Captain Crunch if that was all they would eat.
You are responsible for your cat's health and well being. If the food has something in it that they don’t normally eat, don’t buy it. If the cat won’t eat quality food, don’t free feed kibble or better yet don’t feed kibble at all. Cats should not have more than 10% of their daily intake be dry food, it’s just junk food. Try having set meal times with quality wet food being the main course with a teaspoon of dry food on top. After a couple of weeks they will gobble up the quality food. The main thing is keep trying and don’t take the easy way out and feed them an unhealthy diet.

Same negative problems here with mostly the "Medley" portions. My one female cat vomiting Violently from the "Tuna Primavera" (Medley). Thought perhaps it was a bad can, but tried again, same result (same with "Chicken Primavera" - used to love that, but will not touch now - think they know something?!!) - reaction to the "Tuscany" also. Two trips to vet (over $600) for stomach meds and expensive prescriptive bagged foods. By the way, blood tests came back normal. Cat also developed a skin rash which vet attributed to food. Since then, I have had her on "Pro Plan Focus" canned; no issues whatsoever with that. Something radically wrong. And now I see from the reviews how others and their pets are being (sadly) affected by these companies and their inferior products.

Hi, My cat has been on FF most of her life. I always thought paying more for the little cans must mean that the quality is better and I always felt like I was feeding her something good. She's always preferred the classic pates. If I fed her the gravy lovers she only wants to lick the gravy so that doesn't work. Around December of 2018 I had gotten her the beef liver and chicken liver to switch things up a bit. Usually I would only feed her the beef, chicken, or turkey (non-liver). Her face started getting really swollen and puffy. My poor kitty who, although 12yo, has always maintained her kitten face, looked like she aged by about 10 years pretty much over night. She started scratching a lot and getting really itchy. I took her off the livers and it helped a bit but she also started throwing up. I switched to a different brand and she got better and her face has come back some although not completely.
A while back I couldn't make it to the store that sells the better brand before they closed so I thought I'd try the FF again since I'm not sure if she'll even eat 9 Lives etc. Sure enough her vomiting came back after the first can, this one was the Cod, Sole, and Shrimp flavor classic pate (green label). I don't think there are particular flavors that are good or bad....I think it's all of them or at least all classic pates. I called the company and complained about it. The woman I spoke with was friendly and helpful and seemed generally concerned which is as expected from a customer service representative. I made sure to give her the details off the can. I explained that I've actually worked in food manufacturing and so I understand that those numbers on the can actually translate to what exact line it was made on, the workers on that line at that time, etc.
Even I often wonder how much of a difference complaining will make but giving them those numbers CAN help. She checked to see if there were any recent changes to the formulas and said none had changed for years. I told her it might be improperly trained workers mixing ingredients wrong or putting in wrong amounts but honestly for cat food they should be weighed out exactly and I'm thinking possibly even robotically or by machine either way. The bumps have come back also either from her scratching a lot or the bumps are allergic reaction causing her to scratch.
After reading all these other reviews I'll be switching to permanently NOT USING FF or Purina in general. Good bye Purina Cat Chow Naturals.... Your company can no longer be trusted to keep my cat alive. Either wake up and do something or you're gonna end up with lots of grieving (passed away pet) owners opening a class action lawsuit over this. I hope either the Execs see this or enough of their stockholders to where somebody realizes there's something really wrong happening here. It could be one of the ingredient sources. Unless they do something now instead of worrying about profits for shareholders then your shareholders are gonna be left holding the bag when their stock prices go down by 50% once a scandal is uncovered. Gotta love capitalism.

One of the cats started losing more and more weight and one started vomiting. The vet said he had an allergy to both chicken and turkey. Now they are refusing the tuna. His abdomen has shrunken dramatically and his eye's look bright in 48 hrs. First day with liver he was hesitant and today, he scarfed it up. I cooked and mixed calves and chicken liver. My other cat warming up more slowly but she has no choice. Stop feeding the canned food to your pets. I think intentionally making them sick. My cats have been eating Fancy Feast canned foods on and off (pretty much all varieties) for the past decade. They've been on exclusively Fancy Feast for the past year--both Elegant Medley and originals (sliced, pate, chunky, etc). They only eat chicken or fish flavors--no beef or turkey. I had 5 boxes of canned food delivered from Amazon two weeks ago. They are all 2021 expirations dates (almost all March, April, and May). In the past week, our older cat (16, M) developed constipation, which lead to an anal gland impaction, and ultimately, abscess and infection. Our other cat (9, F) strongly objected to eating most of the new food and soon began to refuse all of it. She threw up some of the food she did eat. She has now also developed constipation and impacted anal glands.
I just spoke with our veterinarian who said that she saw another cat the day after our appointment with an anal gland abscess who is also only eating Fancy Feast. This is NOT a common ailment in cats! I do not know what has happened with this latest batch of food--if they are using new ingredients or what--but it sickened our cats. I have thrown this food away and bought all new food from non-Purina brands. I caution everyone to do the same. I have no ties to the pet food industry. This is an honest complaint and warning to other cat owners from another cat lover.

Months ago, I left a review that agreed with all the others who had cats sickened by FF food that they previously craved. Mine had the same symptoms and expensive vet bills but nothing could be determined until I found the reviews from other cat owners feeding FF with the same result. I stopped feeding FF for months and my cats thrived; there were NO more episodes of intestinal distress. After reading the most recent positive reviews, I gave FF another chance, hoping Purina had reverted to their older formula. I purchased a few Medley cans from the pet store, and then a few more from a grocery chain that had a sale price on the Medleys. Unfortunately, although he could tolerate the food at times, at other times, he would have diarrhea and vomiting right after feeding. When I was packing the food to return to the stores, I noticed that cans of the same flavor had different colors of tops and bottoms, but the same barcode for all of them.
The labels are identical, but some tops and bottoms are green and some are gold. I assume the colors indicate different manufacturing facilities because the numbers on the bottoms are different. The cans with the green top & bottom are the first ones I opened and my young cat ate and became ill. He won't even go near the FF food now. Since I am returning the unused cans, I don't want to waste the time & money to open one can of each color to test against them against one another. I wonder if any of the other reviewers with sick cats have noticed what color of top and bottom their FF cans have. That might isolate the facility where the problem originates - or whether it just indicates the pet stores sell a premium grade of the product, justifying the higher price, as opposed to the grocery stores.

I started using Fancy Feast Poultry and Beef classics about a year ago. Previously they were eating the chicken feast classic pate with no issues but seemed to get bored with it. Within the past 6 months or so, 2 of the cats were having random issues with throwing up their food immediately after eating. I had attributed it to possibly eating too fast or maybe having a fur ball.
The real issue began when my sweet 13 year old started vomiting blood, couldn’t keep anything down. The blood vomiting stopped after the first day, but I took him to the vet, and spent over $1200 in blood tests, x-rays, and fluid therapy. The vet could find nothing wrong with him to explain his symptoms. He was given anti nausea meds, reflux med, and special gastroenteritis food. After about a week and a half, he started to come out of it. He’s been doing well now for about 2 weeks, and I just started weaning him off the special food. In the meantime, I have pinpointed the flavor that gets thrown up by the other 2 cats. The Tender Beef and Chicken Feast is what they are throwing up on. I am going to call the company to let them know what is going on with my cats and the food. I am at a loss for trying to figure out what is wrong with them.

I searched "is Fancy Feast poisonous?” because of how much BOTH of my cats have been puking immediately after eating it recently. It can NOT be coincidental, and I'm growing very worried that there could be a serious problem (like one years ago involving Giant Food store brand and others that had far more serious repercussions). My cats are my kids - 10 and 11 years old - and are/WERE healthy before they suddenly started this bout of 'eat and puke' recently. I think they are okay the rest of the time, except that one keeps meowing for more food, probably because she didn't really keep any down. The other comes back later to munch Purina Pro ‘crunchies’ and seems to be getting a complete aversion to FF. Also, both of them have refused to eat FF a bunch of times recently - flavors they previously wolfed down.
Something HAS to be wrong, and maybe it's only happening in different locations/to different lots (unless younger cats can stomach it without ralphing.). Alas, I guess I, like Judy from Illinois, will have to 'can' the many FF cans we just bought to find some other brand from now on. I so look forward to 'test and tune time' again on two finicky set-in-their way 'ladies'. (That’s going to be almost as much as fun as chasing them to catch and cage them for a vet visit.) I see two pissed off cats and a lot of garbage in my future. Oh, Happy Joy!

Have just read a large number of reviews of the FF cat food range. For at least 2 years my 8 year old cat would only eat the Chicken Provencal variety. He had been eating less and less, then Wednesday evening was ill, vomiting, which he had never done before. This continued until 5am the following morning. The only other food he consumes is a Hills Science dry food. Since stopping FF and just giving him the dry food and boiled, filtered water he has improved dramatically.
I was shocked to read these reviews. This morning I returned all remaining cans to Woolworths and Coles (Australia) for refunds, thinking that they would contact the manufacturers; only to be told that I should talk to the manufacturers as they "won't listen to supermarkets". To make matters worse, all the FF range was discounted. Will be taking this matter further with the manufacturers.

But in the past month or so, it started getting more frequent and her brother started vomiting too. This past week was the worse. Yesterday morning when I got up there were 8 different places of vomit and it was food. I was very upset to say the least. Even the male cat turned was from the dish of food I put in front of him and it was his favorite flavor. I was ready to take them both to the vet and it finally dawned on me that it has to be the food.
I did go to the vet and got some cans of Hills prescription digestive care food and they've eaten 2 cans since yesterday and no vomiting. I just called Purina and she took down all the information and said they haven't heard of any problems with the food. Don't know if I believe that. We went through a tough time with our two cats being sick @ the same time. They were put on two different antibiotics. To no avail. Finally, they were put on ** and they recovered. We were concerned it was Fancy Feast canned food that had caused the problem. But, we had no solid proof. Since that is the food they like, we threw out the cases of Fancy Food we had stored and bought new cans.
Sure enough one of them is sick again. We feed them Tender Liver and Chicken Feast Pate and Chicken Feast Pate along with Savory Salmon Feast Pate. I am convinced that no one @ Fancy Feast cares. All they want is for the stockholders to make money so the execs can make more money. I would encourage anyone who suspects it is the Fancy Feast that is making their cats sick to throw it away and never buy it again, especially if it has a scorched smell to it and a brown coloring on the bottom of it which is the top once it is on the plate. Like an addiction. Kept getting worse. He does not want to eat anything else. He used to only want dry food, strange cat, but now he only wants FF Medleys cans with garden greens. He constantly badgers me to eat more and more. He also started sneezing when he would go to eat, and the way he gobbled it so fast, I thought he was inhaling it. I have tried to mix in other varieties and he won't eat them, or eats some and then bugs me for FF. So I went cold turkey and stopped all FF.
Now he is vomiting, at first it was 3 times, and then now 1 time per day. It's been about 4 days and I will probably take him to the vet again if no improvement. I will go buy more FF so he will eat and see what happens. I decided to google this subject, and wow there are many others out there experiencing similar issues. Add me to the list of those with cats having similar vomiting experiences. Have used FF Classics for years. Have received great feedback from vets on it too. Before FF Classics I would feed a mix of dry and other wet food to my (then) five cats. One cat became diabetic and after much research, I put her on a strict diet of FF Classics which helped me get my cat into remission. I decided then to stop all dry and put all five cats on FF Classics. I'm now down to two cats (one is 18 and the former diabetic). One will no longer touch the FF Classic so I had to change her diet.
About the same time the 18 year old began vomiting violently. I was thinking it was age-related. She is very healthy per our vet. This morning I was up (again) at 4:30am cleaning up after her. I then fed her a fresh can FF Classic at 7am and within minutes of eating she threw it all up. I finally put it together that the common denominator is the food. I now have 3 cases I'm not going to use and am sadly looking for a wet food alternative. I've lost confidence in Fancy Feast. What changed with the ingredients?

I have two cats that have just turned about two years old and they have been very healthy. In the last couple of weeks I subconsciously noticed a vomit here or there which was very unusual because my cats never vomit. My hairy cat has vomited a hairball only twice since he’s been born. I thought maybe it’s summer and he’s licking himself more and shedding, but the newer vomit doesn’t really contain hairballs. Then suddenly this week they have been vomiting three times a day and diarrhea every single time, and in my bathroom sink and tub like they are trying to tell me something. There’s several occasions every day. And they seemed so skinny and hair was not shiny and healthy looking like it usually is. They seemed dehydrated and lethargic.
I went online and read the very recent reviews for Fancy Feast and completely freaked out about reading other peoples cats being deathly ill and some dead. I immediately stopped them from eating the food and now I’m just waiting to see if they get better before deciding to fork out hundreds on vet bills. There seems to be less vomiting today but still diarrhea, so this leads me to believe it is the Fancy Feast.
I give them an assortment of the gravy type canned food, chicken, tuna, etc. I’m actually quite irritate at the last couple reviews giving fancy feast five stars and saying their cats are fine. To me it seems like it’s a cover-up from fake reviewers. How incredibly belittling and disrespectful to other reviewers to sugarcoat a real problem that other people are having and some ultimately losing their pets. If you actually have and care about your pets, you wouldn’t be reading these reviews and going out of your way to write a good review about the food, but rather be concerned about your own cats health if you heard about these incidents from other people. I highly doubt you hang out on the internet looking for bad reviews on fancy feast to debate about. I know I never did until now.

I went to the grocery store April and got my cat the beef feast. Same thing happened. This time the vomiting progressed to bile, lethargy, hiding, diarrhea. She displayed bumps/rashes around head/ears/neck.
Blood work saw chronic inflammation (further analyzed by by pathologist). She still couldn’t keep down food despite antibiotics. She passed away July 3rd. My 18 year old cat has eaten Fancy Feast Classic varieties (mostly Turkey & Giblet because of a chicken sensitivity and a fish sensitivity) and has loved it his whole life. I also have a four year old cat with a big appetite. In the last few months, I have noticed a strong smell with the Turkey & Giblets variety. The consistency also has varied from lot to lot, but the strong smell is common to all lots. I inquired about a change in formula, as the ingredients appeared to be the same- was told nothing has changed. But both cats gradually ate less and less of it, even my 4 year old who loves to eat. I also feed grain free dry food and switch brands of wet food during the week, so I thought maybe it was them being finicky. When they started refusing it, I knew I had to use my instinct, because of the strong smell, and dig deeper.
I had previously looked at the FDA recall site, and found nothing. So tonight I see all the posts and I am aghast. It looks like gravy varieties are the worst. My cans have been made in St, Louis, not overseas, but whenever a cat doesn’t finish a bowl of food, you have to worry. I previously ran into a brick wall with Purina several years ago trying to find out if their can linings were BPA free, so with the comments I am reading here, I will never buy another Purina product again. The smell isn’t spoilage or textbook “bad” but it is very off-putting and kind of artificial smell, so I am wondering if they are using chemical taste enhancers. Cat people up to now called Fancy Food “kitty crack” so this is not necessary. Maybe it’s some kind of filler. Whatever it is, you can bank on corporate greed being at the bottom of it.
For people looking for alternatives, Chewy.com has the largest variety of cat food and supplies I’ve seen anywhere and shipping is free with $49 spent, but you have to buy by the case. They do have great information on products, ingredients, where made, nutrition, reviews, etc so you can use it as a research venue if your cat has dietary restrictions. Thank you to the people running this forum for being the canary in the coal mine. The FDA has to get on this!

It's been 3 days and 2 mild throw ups, instead of 5 puke ups by now. I will chalk this up at forward movement. Look up raw cooking recipes.

They didn't want to eat it anymore after 1 week of eating the food. 1 of them got really sick still vomiting and having black stool and now not eating much and not drinking water, this is still happening 3 days after eating the food. We are taking him to the vet. And we have stopped feeding our cats the food and no longer purchasing this brand anymore. I wrote a report at Costco and they said they will send the report I made to Fancy Feast.

I buy Fancy Feast classic pate by the case and my cats have been eating it just fine for the past few years. It was manufactured in the good old USA. Just recently, they started eating less, walking up to the plate, smelling it, then walking away. I noticed that the food is now being manufactured in France and the ingredients are a little different. I contacted Purina and was told just certain "grilled" varieties were being manufactured there. They sent me some coupons to console me. Not sure what I'm going to try to feed them now.

My cats began turning their noses up at FF a few years ago. One has irritable bowel syndrome and has reacted violently to some varieties. But they also turn their noses up at other brands, so it's a problem. Sometimes I will just do anything so they'll eat, like feed them FF when I know it's not a healthy choice. But it used to be ok!!! My cat with IBS (16 yo) was recently hospitalized with pancreatitis. Doc wasn't sure she'd make it, but five days later, she started eating again and seems to be okay, thank goodness. Don't know if it was food or something else, but the problem began immediately after she ate FF tuna and threw it all up.
I appreciate the recommendations others have made for replacement brands. I've tried so many, though, and thrown practically all out. I know cats are finicky, and dietary changes are challenging, but I’ve also wondered if there's something in the FF formula that makes cats addicted. Petco has discontinued its sales of FF and Friskies, and some other Purina products as well because of the additives and artificial ingredients and flavors. Kudos to them. Now FF has come out with a "natural" version. Who knows what that means, but I am trusting it's healthier???
It's just not okay for Nestle/Purina to deny formula changes when obviously that's not the case. They'll also say there have been no complaints, when there are plenty of complaints online. But we consumers also need to push back. I pushed hard a few years ago and got a financial refund for expensive vet treatment (and coupons for more inedible food). Petco certainly has more clout than we do, but we can help make it painful enough so they have to do the right thing. How about our states' consumer protection bureaus? I might give that a try too.

The FF chicken classic pate that were made from France are different than those made in the U.S.A. in both appearance and formulation. Go ahead to compare the labels. Those made in France has less chicken, more inorganic impurities, less Calories. My cat needs to consume 202 kcal/day. This calculation was based on the cans made in the U.S. At first, I thought all FF made in the U.S. with the same specifications, I didn't know that those made from France contains 10% less stuff and has different components and composition. As a result, I underfed my cat for 1.5 months before I notice the products were different. Why it is so hard to see it, because they use the same color label, same container size and design. Unless you read the fine print, you wouldn't notice it.
To be sure you got the products from the U.S. The label must print 'manufactured by...at St. Louis...' and NOT "distributed by.... product from France. The U.S. version has 99 kcal/can whereas the France's version has 90 kcal/can. So I underfed my cat 20 kcal/day. The worst thing is that my cat now simply walked away from FF. I tried different varieties of FF, Boo wouldn't touch it. Something must have bothered him. I called FF and asked if any ingredient changes or formulation changes, they said NO. But if you compare the labels, there were significant changes. What a lie. I am more concern about too much artificial stuff were put in the products, e.g. Vitamin A can be toxic if it is overdosed. The first system is losing hair. Petco told me that they will not carry FF in the near future anymore because of too much chemicals.

Our geriatric cat is currently in a very bad state. It is easy to blame problems on age, and as it happened she was just due for another 6 month exam anyway, so I figured, "Well, it's finally the kidneys and it's time to start a fluids routine". Except it wasn't and her labs were really surprising decent -- except for her liver which is suddenly in bad shape. We have safe plants and such and, no, I do not believe she ate some random poison in our home environment. She was fine Thursday as ever, as a geriatric cat goes, until we restocked her Fancy Feast Thursday and she blew her first can Friday morning and went into the foaming heaves and refuses to eat and is hiding in a "I'm in pain, leave me alone hiding place." It is hard not to be suspicious that that restocked Fancy Feast was the variable that changed. I think this thread may on to something similar to the melamine fiasco of Purina's that killed so many dogs and it chills me.

Last year he started throwing up increasingly (almost daily!) and I have taken him to 2 different veterinarians for help. The first vet did not have any answers as to why he was puking up food almost daily. The second vet was positive hairballs were the cause. I finally switched out his dry food from Fancy Feast (Chicken & Turkey and Filet Mignon & Seafood) to another brand. That next day, no puking. He has not puked for 6 days now and I know the dry food was the problem. All other items in his diet remained the same. I am not buying Fancy Feast or another else owned by Purina again. I just took her to the vet this week and found her white blood count is down to 300. Normal range should be 1200-3000. She went from energetic to lethargic in two weeks time. She has lost 2.25 lbs since Dec.2018 which is a lot for a cat to lose in that short amount of time. The vet mentioned possible kidney failure. I have copied all of the reviews to bring to my vet. Fancy Feast used to be one of the better foods as it has low carbohydrate and it helped me w/ feline diabetes. I became a detective reading labels due to FD. I was appalled by the changes to Fancy Feast's formula. The first was the addition of nitrates to their Salmon. Then they started using wheat gluten in place of meat. Nitrates in more flavors. I thought the only safe flavors left were Turkey and Giblets and Chicken and liver. My cat began to refuse to eat it. We did not suspect the food, until I read what others have experienced. All 3 of my cats got sick, throwing up and lethargic after eating this product. I opened another pack from the same package and it smells bad. As humans we aren't supposed to eat fish of any kind if it has an "off" smell. Every pack of the Fancy Feast broths was very stinky and looked darker than it should. Thankfully my cats recovered. However, cats have very sensitive systems and enzyme in raw fish destroys thiamine, which is an essential B vitamin for your cat. A lack of thiamine can cause serious neurological problems and lead to convulsions and coma. I will never purchase this product or any Fancy Feast product again.

I have been feeding my (picky eaters) indoor rescue cats Fancy Feast cat food for the past 9 years. They have always been healthy active cats with no health problems. A couple weeks ago my local pet store pulled FF from their shelves and had signs up saying they would no longer be selling FF brand cat food. I asked the employee and they said something about preservatives making cats sick. I honestly didn’t think much of it. Like others on here giving 5 star reviews I trusted FF as I had been feeding it to my cats their entire lives. I went to a different store and got a box of FF.
Ever since then, I noticed the food bowls would often be full when I went to feed them and my cats were acting a bit strange, following us around and cuddling and whining a lot. Then I noticed some accidents around the house where someone wasn’t making it to the litter box in time to do their #2 business. I still didn’t put 2 and 2 together sadly. Then this past week one of my cats has been throwing up regularly, lethargic and having LOTS of #2 accidents and generally acting miserable. He’ll walk up to the food as if he’s hungry, sniff it, look sad and walk away and cry to me.
We went out and got several different brands of food and have offered them (my cats are EXTREMELY picky) but now they are just refusing to eat. I feel horrible that I did this to them and hope that I caught this in time to save their lives. I see some others on here have lost their beloved pets to this and my heart breaks for everyone affected. Please please everyone stop feeding your cats FF. If you haven’t noticed an issue yet you may have been lucky and just not purchased the affected cans yet. I was arrogant about this when I first heard this, thinking since I hadn’t noticed anything yet that everything must be fine. SOMETHING has been changed in FF recently. I do not understand how there has not been a recall. Criminal charges should be brought against this company.
Their products are not cheap, there is no reason why they should be passing off contaminated (or whatever it is that happened recently) food onto unsuspecting families. This is absolutely devastating, my cats are part of my family and trust me to take care of them. FF has betrayed my trust and loyalty and I have unknowingly been feeding my cats food that has made them extremely ill. I feel as though I have failed in my job as their pet parent. FF - shame shame shame on you! How could you take our money and do this!? I will NEVER purchase another Purina branded product in my life. And I will tell everyone I know about this. I tried switching her food but she would only eat the FF. By January of 2019, the vomiting became almost daily and would always start about 30 minutes after eating and she started to grow more and more lethargic.
Last week she threw up what smelled and looked like feces and she was looking so thin and sickly. I took her to the vet and she not only lost 10 lbs in the last year, but her liver and pancreas were beginning to fail. Her vet and I honestly did not think she would make it. She had to get IV fluids and injectable medications because she was so dehydrated and also extremely anemic. We began her on antibiotics and I started to feed her only baby food and mashed chicken and broth per vet instructions.
After a few days of antibiotics and pain medications, her appetite began to improve and she's perked up. We saw her vet this morning to redraw her labs and they are slowly improving although she's not out of the woods quite yet. Her vet told me she honestly didn't think she would survive and neither did I. I spoon feed her baby food mixed with a bone broth I made by cooking down a whole organic chicken. She's been able to gain a half lb and her anemia is beginning to resolve. I never put it together it may have been from the Fancy Feast patés I had been feeding her until a friend mentioned this to me today. I almost lost my cat and I feel so horrible. If I had not taken her to see her vet when I did, she would have died. I'm so relieved she's gotten better but I'm heartbroken so many cats have gotten so sick and some have died. In fall of 2018, my cat began to exhibit signs of sickness. About a month earlier, he began to refuse to eat his dry food and therefore would only eat Fancy Feast exclusively. Over the course of October, November and December of 2018, he grew to be more and more sick. When I took him to the vet, they could not determine what was wrong with him. He was losing tons of weight, developed allergies on his skin, and grew to be very discontent. Sometimes, he would just stand in one place for hours staring off at the wall. He seemed very out of it. His behavior continued to change and he grew more and more weak.
Finally, a few weeks ago, I noticed that the fur on his back legs and belly began to come off. It looked really infected so I took him into the vet. They determined that he had developed a severe food allergy and that I must change his food immediately. I tried, but unfortunately, it was too late. Although he had been given multiple rounds of antibiotics from the vet, he grew sicker and sicker until he could barely walk and refused to eat. Last Wednesday, January 24th, 2019, he passed away in my living room.
I wish that I had known how toxic Fancy Feast is sooner so I could have changed his food months ago and avoided it. I am heartbroken. My cat went from lively and healthy to sickly and dead within months. After reading all of the posts here, I see that this is happening to many others. Is a class action lawsuit something we could pursue? Anyone?
