We'd been feeding our cat 9Lives tender slices (chicken and beef) for about 6 months with no issues. However, this latest batch of food must be bad. He had horrible, weird diarrhea last night and vomited recently as well. I didn't connect it to the food until he refused to eat it this morning and only wanted his dry food (which never happens). I did a quick search to see if there was a recall and found these reviews.

Our 13-year-old cat started throwing up after eating the 9 Lives Shreds. That was on Wednesday night. She died before daylight on Friday morning. Every time she threw up, she was howling in pain. Our younger cat has lost a lot of hair and is now sick as well. I didn't even think about it being the food until last night when I offered our cat a can of the whitefish/tuna. She wouldn't touch it. I then offered her the beef (I knew she liked this one). She took one sniff of it and ran away. I got online and found this. I hope no one feeds their animals this food!

I have never fed my cat 9Lives cat food but one day, I went to the store and the only canned wet food they had was 9Lives 4 pack, so I bought it. I fed it to my cats and my Siamese stuck up her nose and walked away but my other cat who is not picky at all devoured it. He was fine until a couple days later when he started vomiting, had runny, very stinky diarrhea and was lethargic. This went on for almost a week. At first, we didn't connect it to the food since a few days had passed before the symptoms showed up.

I happened to find this site and I am completely appalled that this food is still being sold in stores! What the hell is wrong with our system that this pathetic company is getting away without a recall?! I think we need to stop complaining on this pathetic site and take stronger action especially when our dear cats' lives and/or well-being are in danger! I will be making phone calls. By the way, the food I bought was specifically 9Lives Chicken and Beef canned/wet food (sold as 4 pack), best by 09/26/15, serial number on bottom of can: 227OBC B1CHM1635.

My son's cat that never eats moist food was given a little last night as a treat. Within 20 minutes, he vomited and wobbled into a wall. My son carried him to me; he was limp, drooling and breathing very heavy and fast. When he laid him down, he just stayed in the position he was put in. Within a half an hour, he seemed to be okay and then began eating his normal dry food after awhile. We think he may have had a seizure. My friend brought this site to my attention and I am reading similar situations. This is very scary.

My 13-year old Siamese got very sick last month with bloody diarrhea and vomiting. It was deemed a "dietary indiscretion". Two of my others as well… I switched foods after cooking for them for a week and they were okay. I still had 9 Lives in the house and opened a can of the beef chunks. One of my cats began retching when I put it down for them. The rest turned away and wouldn't eat it. I have fed them 9 Lives and Friskies for many years and never had a problem. But I notice the smell is different in the cans of chunks. I will no longer feed them 9 Lives knowing other people are having issues with the food.

We have been feeding our cats 9Lives dry and can food for years. Our cat Sadie May started having seizures on Fri., March 15, 2013. We didn't make any connection to the food until I found a hard-as-rock chunk of dry food in the Daily Essentials. I was going to pull up the 9Lives website and saw all of the very upsetting complaints. We had problems with Sadie May having viral infections also. The vet placed her on Phenobarbital, which is a strong med for the seizures to come under control. We will never purchase any 9Lives product again.

Everyone who reads this, tell your family and friends to stop buying it. Lord Jesus, comfort us all in our being the voice for our beloved four-legged babies! We also lost Bitty boy and my girl Isabelle to feline leukemia 3yrs ago and were reluctant to adopting. We have no kids, so she is our precious girl! I had to force feed her. We dipped into our bills money to pay for her vet care and meds. She's also on antibiotics for upper respiratory infection. On Feb. 18, 2013, we started feeding this food to only one of our three cats. By Friday, Feb. 22, he couldn't walk. He didn't throw up the food so we didn't make a connection to the food until later.

The vet kept the cat overnight and said that he had had an assault on his system, meaning he ate something he shouldn't have. He was sent home with antibiotics, high-calorie gel, and we were to feed him kitten formula as well. He started recovering enough that he could eat on his own again, so we started feeding him the canned 9Lives again. He relapsed on Feb. 27th. I finally made the connection that it was the food. If I had made the connection earlier, the cat wouldn't be facing being put to sleep this very day. We've tried everything but he's in renal failure, won't eat or drink and cannot move.

We purchased this food for our two cats and both of them became ill immediately after consuming the food. They both were vomiting profusely and were very lethargic. One of our cats didn't eat much of the food and started to recover though she seemed slow about it. Our other cat however continued to get worse. At first, we thought it was some coincidence but after our dog got into the cat food bag and started showing the same symptoms, we knew it was no longer a coincidence. I looked online to see if we'd accidentally purchased recalled food and found that there in fact wasn't a recall on 9Lives. Yet, there were several posts online from pet parents complaining that their cats were doing the same thing ours were and their pets eventually died. Most complained that the cats had passed away from liver or kidney failure.

Seeing as how our one cat was not getting any better, we took him to the veterinarian who ran tests and found that he was also in acute kidney failure. They then informed us that there wasn't much chance for his survival and that the most humane thing we could to do for him was to put him down. Heartbroken, we had no other choice. Formerly, he was very healthy and happy but he deteriorated quickly. Now, all I have left is a sympathy card from our veterinarian and a few pictures. He wasn't even 5 years old. He had years left on his life. I wish we'd never purchased this food!

I have one male cat that is prone to vomit anyway so I didn't think too much of it until January 2, 2013 when one of my cats experienced the same behaviors as these other people are expressing: lethargy, vomiting kidney failure. But my cat, upon death, had a foul fluid pour from his nose. He has been fine prior to this happening. I have one more bag that I bought along with this bag that I have not opened. I feed 9 ferrets as well and have also noticed lethargy in them as well. I will be returning that bag to Tractor Supply in Sturbridge, MA and going elsewhere to find something else, probably to Noah's Ark. Too many rendered pet animals from shelters in this batch I guess.

First, he was very tired, he wouldn't move and then he had severe stomach pain. Finally, he won't eat and he can hardly walk. I didn't even consider that it could be the cat food until my dog got into it and started vomiting violently. I have started him on another brand of wet food and fluids. He is better but not 100% and I'm feeding him through an eye dropper. If he doesn't make it, someone will be hearing from my lawyer since there are several other claims on this site with the same issues.

I have 4 cats and I split a can of wet food among them every evening. My 10 month old Siamese kitten became very ill the Wednesday night before Thanksgiving. The Monday after the holiday, he would not eat, slept all the time and became pretty lifeless. I took him to the vet and they did all the testing for leukemia and other feline diseases but everything came back negative. He had never been outside and they couldn't figure out what was wrong. They put him on an antibiotic and by that Thursday, he could not walk and became very lethargic.

I took him back to the vets and they kept him over the weekend, force feeding him and giving him fluids, only to tell me Monday morning that he was experiencing liver and kidney failure and there was nothing else they could do so he had to be put down. The vet said he had to have gotten into something but he had not had anything different other than the 9 Lives canned food I had recently purchased, because it was a little cheaper and money was tight. I didn't think it was the food until this week when my 2 older male cats started vomiting and it was clearly the canned food coming back up.

My female, who is also an inside only cat, will not touch it and I could never understand why. After googling and coming across this site, I truly believe there is something wrong with this product and I will discontinue feeding my animals any brand of 9 Lives, wet or dry food. I feel this is something that needs to be investigated. So, if in fact it is this product that is making these animals sick and dying, something can be done and people warned. It breaks my heart to know that my baby died possibly because of the negligence of a company that is supposed to be here providing them with the necessity of food that is safe.

I bought a 12-pack box of 9 Lives canned cat food today for my six-month-old kitten. I fed her half a can of the chicken flavor which she gobbled down. I later tried to feed her a little more and she would not eat it, so I thought she was just not hungry. Within 2 hours of eating the half can of food, she became tired and withdrawn. She went to lie on her favorite blanket and, a short time later, I found her on the floor struggling to breathe, listless, crying and she could not walk. I held her and tried to calm her as she cried as if she were in terrible pain and struggled to breath. Within another hour to an hour and a half, as that is how long she lingered on in this terrible state, she began to violently vomit up all the food, had a horrible seizure and died. I feel as though this cat food had something to do with my cat's death. Within 4 to 5 hours of feeding this food to a perfectly normal cat, my cat that I loved dearly is now dead. This cat food should be recalled and checked for contamination.

All their dry cat foods were taken off the shelves with no explanation in the store or online. I purchased 9Lives Gravy Favorites Variety Pack (12354J QC 011263). When I opened one of the cans of veal, there was an awful rotten odor. At first, I thought that one of my cats (who was sitting next to me as I opened the can) had broken wind. When I put the food down, none of my 3 cats would go near it, nor would the 3 feral cats that I feed everyday (and they normally eat anything I put down, even the leftovers that my indoor cats leave, or other things my indoor cats won't touch). I thought it was a fluke limited to the one can, but they did the same with another can I opened of the same variety (they will eat the beef and chicken varieties somewhat). Is there a recall? Because I suspect this product is contaminated, and that they process the other varieties in the same facility so cross-contamination is likely. I will stop feeding 9 Lives and Meow Mix (which I also feed regularly and it is made by Del Monte as well).

After reading the reviews here, I'm suspecting that this food may be a contributor to my elderly cat's chronic soft stool, and gradual weight loss. I recently took him to the vet and a fresh fecal sample revealed he had Giardia. This cat has been an indoor cat for years and has had fecal exams previously (which were negative). There is no way he could have caught it from the feral cats I feed (no contact, even the bowls are kept separate and not washed together). I'm now wondering if he got the Giardia from the food. He has been retested after treatment (because he is still losing weight) and the sample came back negative for any parasites. In any case, this episode with the veal is a catalyst (no pun intended) for me to find a better quality cat food. With all the recalls of pet food recently, I will be searching for a non-grocery store brand.

I have been feeding my 4-year old cat 9 Lives wet food and occasionally dry food all his life. I have been noticing that over the past couple of weeks, he turns his nose up to eating his wet food. I give him just a quarter of a cup of dry food during the late afternoon as a snack. I opened up a new bag Friday afternoon and gave him some and as soon as he ate it, he threw it up and he showed signs of not feeling well over the course of the day.

Last night, I went to open a 12-can box that I just bought on Thursday. The box sat unopened on a pantry shelf since Thursday. I proceeded to open it and as soon as I pushed my thumb through the zippered edge, a horrendous stench was released. I couldn't believe how bad the small was. Immediately, I went outside to clear my nostrils and took the box with me. I ripped it open to find that the cans were covered with maggots and a clear slippery substance all over the cans. I immediately closed it. I ran to get some plastic bags to wrap the entire box. I placed it in two bags and knotted it tight. I have the box in my store room and I'd rather not throw it away yet until I get some answers as to why the box is in that condition.

I had purchased at the same time 4 wrapped cans of the Tender Slices of Real Beef in Gravy and opened one of them. My cat ate just 1/4 of it and threw it up.
I saved about a tablespoon of it to have it tested for contamination. My impression is that there may be a conspiracy going on and that you need to look into your

internal operations and investigate the people who are dealing directly with the canned and dry foods leaving your plant. Too many cats are being affected and are getting sick and even dying. I plan on taking this to the Environmental Health Dept. in my county and giving them all the information as to where I purchased the products and the SKU numbers and the dates of purchase. We're glad you took the time to contact us and appreciate the opportunity to respond. We can understand your concern of reports about finding bone in the food, and are glad you brought this to our attention. Our products are processed and packed under strict quality control procedures. While it's not uncommon for very small bones to remain in the food, they are usually soft and easy to break apart when they're part of the food, and shouldn't be a problem for your cat. However, large or harder bones certainly doesn't represent the quality of product we want you to receive. After 2 weeks of having this cat food, we have a lot of cats that eat this, plus 2 dogs that eat it too. We have lost one of our cats tonight because of her eating this cat food. I'm very angry because your company has a lot of complaints that our animals are getting sick, but your company refuses to take it off the shelf. I hope we don't have any more deaths because of your cat food. They were fine until they started eating this brand of cat food. Get a grip on your company and start making better cat food that's safer for the animals. I will not be buying 9Lives anymore. This breaks my heart because my cat who died was a very loving cat and she left behind 3 kittens.

I can't get enough of your Salmon dry food. I am writing not to complain, but to commend you for the quality of your Salmon dry of 9 lives Cat Food. Since I started feeding my 12-year-old cat Shadow (aka baby girl), her smile has perked up and she is eating unbelievably. The thing that is very noticeable is that within 2-3 minutes of setting out the dry Salmon 9 lives cat food, she consumes all of it. Now when I try to get my cat to eat any other type of cat food, she won't eat it. If my cat eats, it is only after a couple of days sitting in her bowl. My question is, what is in this product that my cat is just completely hooked on eating? I have never seen an animal consumer food as fast as Shadow eats. I can go upstairs and come back in just a few minutes and she has completely eaten all that's in the bowl and there isn't a morsel of cat food left. The product you sell is quite amazing and I would wonder what is in this to cause such a reaction. I can't serve enough of it and sometimes, I have to stop giving it to my cat because I am afraid that she eats so much and so fast. It is a good product, but it makes me wonder. In conclusion, I have never seen any animal consume a food product this way.

It finally dawned on me this morning after I opened two cans of 9Lives Daily Essentials Real Flaked Tuna & Cheese Bits in Sauce, found bits of bone and read the contents that I realized this product is slowly killing my cats. I have been buying 9Lives for less than 2 weeks. They have been lethargic (not their usual active selves), throwing up after eating and their litter box(es) have started smelling with a terrible stench (so unlike our cats with perfect hygiene). Worst of all, our kittens have lost weight since we changed to 9Lives. They eat, later throw up (in unsuspecting places) and still seem hungry all day. Duh! Several threw up on the carpet, and the stain is still there. It is not a small spot; it is about an 8" circle. I tried every carpet cleaner I could find, even tried OxiClean. Nothing worked. I cannot afford to replace carpeting. If one, or even two, cats got sick, it may have been a fluke. But 4 out of 8 leads me to believe that it was indeed the cat food. They had to keep her for three days on fluids; she finally started to eat after being on antibiotics for the three days too. We brought her home, continued the antibiotics, and she has now recovered. The only thing new was the 9 Lives canned food; afterwards, we looked at the food closely. There were little bone shards or small pieces of plastic; it was hard to tell what it was. It was all throughout the can. We saved the other cans. I will be writing to 9 Lives about this.

Each time I have attempted to give her the Super Supper, she refuses to eat it which I thought was a fluke as she is typically a very aggressive eater. Yesterday, I gave her 1/2 can of the super supper and she barely ate any. My dog helped herself to some of it and she was up all night last night shaking and vomiting mucus. She is a Chihuahua-Dachshund mix. Today, she had diarrhea with slimy mucus in it. She won't eat anything and we have to force her to drink. I am very concerned about this and just checked, but didn't see the canned food on a recall list but wanted to let others know and to avoid buying the 9Lives product as I am certain there is something wrong with it.

They get baths and advantage put on every month on the dot. I recently switched from kitten food to cat food. They always have received your brand and I go through about 2 13.3 lbs. a month. The oldest one and the youngest one I had to bottle feed from around 2-3 weeks old. The middle one, I have had her since she was about 5-6 weeks old. And I had to nurse her back to health from a deathly state. I have never had any issues until now.

About a week ago, I bought this bag of cat food. The youngest ate it one time then would not touch it. The middle and the oldest one, I need to take to the vet now. The middle one is wheezing and the oldest one is throwing up and both were sickly. The middle cat only ate around 1/2 a bowl, and the oldest the same. I went and bought Purina (complete formula) and then after not having to add food to their dishes for about 3 days, I started to notice them sick. They all eat it again and I am back to filling their dishes 2 times a day. However, the middle one is looking better and not wheezing as much, and the oldest one is not throwing up and is becoming somewhat active. This is a cat that is very hipper, will talk back to you, and has very interesting meows for what she wants. If you tell her no, she will look at you, and meow then walk away meowing as long as you are in her sight. She’s very stubborn, happy, extremely uncommonly strong, and loves to play.

The middle cat and her now are both not active and seem like walking is hard for them. They won’t jump in to the window seal where they love to lay, and instead they lay on the ground by the sliding glass door. She was before around 12.6lbs. and strong as ever. After only about 3-4 days, she was around 9 lbs. After I switched foods, she has gained only about 1 lb. They have not had or been around anything new other than this bag alone of 13.3lb. cat food. I would like to know if there was a recall, formula change, or something. I do not see a recall for your cat food on the list of cat foods recalled. I am 100% sure it was the cat food that caused it. These calls are my fiancé and my kids, and would do anything for them.

She was hiding the next morning; she was listless all day not eating or drinking but vomiting (a foul odor to it). She was still like this on New Year's day. I had to take her to the emergency vet. They did a bunch of tests, kept her overnight, and wanted to keep her again, but I could not afford to do that. The cost of the day and night came to $548.37. Her kidney count was bad. She was very dehydrated; I had to take her back to her vet.

On Monday, 1/4/10, as they were closed for the holiday weekend, they did necessary blood work and gave her med for vomiting. She again was dehydrated. She stayed there all day; total cost was $398.36. I asked the vet if he thought it could have been the cat food, as Belle was fine before she ate that. She is an indoor cat. He said it very well could be. And I asked if I should call the FDA, which I did yesterday. I am supposed to hear back from them, hopefully, by the end of the week.

Our cats have eaten the same dry food for years and an occasional can of special kitty over the last year (A type that was not recalled).

When Menu foods did the recall over a month ago, just to be safe we switched them to 9-lives wet cat food because it was not recalled and not a menu foods product. The 9-lives company claims there is no recall on their products, my vet says there is no doubt what happened to my cats is related to their food regardless whether or not it is recalled.

I am deeply saddened by the loss of my baby boy, but even more concerned that one of my other cats or even my dogs may get sick and die. I find it extremely disheartening that there may be more products on the shelves still poisoning our pets and possibly eventually us. What is it going to take to fix this? And who is going to compensate our losses financially, it won't bring back our babies, but it makes the whole experience even worse!
