    Disassembling lamps for packing

Moving lamps safely requires careful disassembly and wrapping due to their many fragile components. Following these steps will help ensure all pieces arrive at your new destination intact.

    1. Turn off and unplug the lamp: Switch the lamp off and unplug the power cord from the wall outlet to prevent electrical hazards.
    2. Allow for cooling: Let the lamp, especially the bulb and socket area, cool down for 15 to 30 minutes before proceeding.
    3. Remove the lampshade: If secured by a finial (the decorative top piece), unscrew and remove it first. Lift the lampshade off the harp (the U-shaped wire frame) or fixture.
    4. Remove the light bulb: Ensure the bulb is cool to the touch, then carefully unscrew the light bulb from the socket.
    5. Remove the harp (shade holder): Locate the saddle (the small U-shaped piece at the base of the socket where the harp rests). Squeeze the two prongs of the harp together at the saddle and lift the harp up and away from the lamp base.
    6. Secure small parts: Place the finial, harp and any other small, loose pieces (screws, bolts, washers, etc.) into a small, clearly labeled plastic zipper bag. Label the bag with the lamp's type or location (e.g., "Desk Lamp - Living Room").

    Choosing the right packing materials

Before purchasing any materials, measure the width and height of your lamp's base and stand (after the shade is removed), which will be important for selecting the correct box size. Aim for a heavy-duty moving box that provides at least two inches of extra space on all sides of the lamp base, so that you can add sufficient cushioning material to prevent movement and shock damage during transit.

For particularly tall lamps (like floor lamps), you may want to purchase specialty lamp boxes designed for their dimensions, as they offer better protection than standard boxes.

Here are the packing materials you’ll need:

    1. Heavy-duty moving boxes: Choose double-walled boxes for fragile items whenever possible, ensuring the boxes are large enough to accommodate the lamp base and provide cushioning space. You’ll also need a separate box for the lamp shade.
    2. Packing tape: Wide clear or brown packing tape to securely seal the box seams, top and bottom.
    3. Bubble wrap: For wrapping the delicate lamp base and stand.
    4. Packing paper: For wrapping the lampshade, filling voids and crumpling for light cushioning.
    5. Packing peanuts, air pillows or other cushioning material (like sheets or towels): To fill the empty space in the box and absorb shock.
    6. Sealable bags: For securing and labeling small, loose hardware like finials and screws.
    7. Permanent marker: For clearly labeling the box as "FRAGILE," indicating the contents ("Lamp Base"), and marking which side is "UP."

    Packing lamp bases

Here’s how you can pack the lamp base correctly:

    1. Secure the lamp's electrical cord: coil it neatly and wrap it tightly in packing paper, securing the paper with tape to prevent unraveling.
    2. Prepare a sheet of bubble wrap (with the bubble side facing inward, towards the lamp) or several layers of packing paper.
    3. Lay the lamp base on its side on this material.
    4. Tightly wrap the entire lamp base with overlapping layers, securing the material with packing tape.
    5. Fold and tape the material over the top and bottom of the lamp base to provide complete protection.
    6. Place a generous layer of bubble wrap, crushed packing paper or other cushioning material at the bottom of the box.
    7. Carefully place the wrapped lamp base into the center of the box, keeping it upright (do not place it on its side).
    8. Fill all remaining empty space around the lamp base with packing peanuts, crumpled packing paper or air pillows until the lamp cannot shift.
    9. Seal the box's top securely with several strips of packing tape.
    10. Clearly label the outside of the box with "FRAGILE," "THIS SIDE UP" and the destination room (e.g., "Bedroom Lamp").

    Packing lampshades separately

Lampshades must be packed in a separate box from the heavier lamp base, as they are easily torn or damaged by pressure. Choose a box that provides at least two inches of extra space around the lampshade after it's placed inside.

    1. Lay down a thick layer (at least a few inches) of crumpled packing paper at the bottom of the box for cushioning.
    2. Carefully place the lampshade into the box, ensuring it remains upright.
    3. Fill the empty space around the exterior of the shade with more crumpled packing paper to prevent movement.
    4. Gently stuff the interior (center) of the lampshade with loosely crumpled packing paper to help maintain its shape; however, do not cram the paper as excessive pressure can damage or warp the shade.
    5. Seal the packed box with packing tape and label it as “FRAGILE.”

Packing paper is generally preferred over packing peanuts for lampshades, as it provides more effective, uniform cushioning.

Securing light bulbs and small parts

Since light bulbs are extremely fragile and easily broken, and generally low-cost, it may be easier to dispose of them before a long-distance move. If you choose to pack them, prepare a small, sturdy box by lining the bottom with several sheets of bubble wrap or other cushioning material.

Wrap each bulb completely in bubble wrap, securing the padding with packing tape, and then carefully place them into the box. Be sure to fill all empty spaces with packing peanuts or crumpled paper to prevent movement during transit. Seal with packing tape and label “FRAGILE.”

Don’t include any small hardware parts or accessories in the same box, as their slight movement could cause the delicate bulbs to shatter. Instead, pack these bags separately with tools or other heavy hardware.
