Our editor’s take

As of publishing, we don’t have enough reviews to determine how satisfied customers are with Charter Van Lines. It does have the appropriate licensing from the FMCSA and the USDOT, and it claims a focus on long-distance moves.

If you’re moving far and want to work with a moving broker, it’s worth requesting a quote. Just make sure you understand the terms (i.e., if it’s a binding estimate), and keep in mind that the company shouldn’t request more than around 20% upfront.

To schedule a move, you can reserve your date online and get an instant quote.

Charter Van Lines pricing

Cross-country or long-distance moves vary in price based on the load size and any additional services.

A typical 1,000-mile move costs around $5,000 on average, depending on how much you’re moving. Factors that influence pricing include distance, number of movers, home size and packing services. If you need storage solutions or a vehicle moved, you can expect to pay more.

Keep in mind that deposits are required and are refundable if you cancel a move outside seven business days before the first packing or load date. (Note that most legitimate movers require no more than 20% for a down payment.)

Charter Van Lines reached out to me. The salesperson was nice but told me other companies would contact me but not to respond because Charter is the best. I believed him. They sent me an estimate which I thought was a quote or would be close in cost. We reviewed it over the phone a few times. I asked them if my stuff would be the only items on the truck and they said yes. The day the movers showed up, I found out that that was not true. There were going to be other customer's things loaded on the truck as well. Also, Charter Van Lines does not do the move themselves, they contract it out. The person onsite looked at my stuff and then double the cost that they told me it would be.

Moving is stressful enough without being shocked by someone giving you a terrible inaccurate estimate. I did not care for the movers that were at my place, and it was hard to communicate with them. At the end of the day, I did not trust them and I fired them. I lost my deposit which was over $1300. I would never recommend hiring this company. I am an honest person, and they are not an honest company. After talking to other people, I guess this is common in the moving industry. Hire someone local or someone you know you can trust.

We had a move from Cannelton Indiana to Bay St Louis Mississippi…on Sept 15 didn’t receive the truck till after the 1st of October. The packers were very thorough…they had to make several stops to drop other locations means our stuff got shifted around in the truck. We had 2 broken TVS and a shattered very expensive painting. Over 1000.00 of damages. The claim department denied our claim. We had bad experience before but by far these are the worst to do business with. I would not advise this company

My review is in the gutter or lower. My elderly mother hired Charter Van Lines believing that they are a moving company. They are in fact, NOT! They are a brokerage company. This is information that they do provide if you have a law degree and a magnifying glass. My mother understood them to be a moving company. No one during her process of laying down thousands of dollars ever made mention that they were not a moving company. They subcontract everything.

The client is NEVER made aware that different moving companies would be handling all of her worldly belongings and would just be handed off to any shit hole moving company. How does a person know who has their stuff?? Firstly, the movers show up at my mom's house and are completely unaware that she has paid to have her house packed. She assumes that these are Charter Van Lines employees. They were not.

Also, she was not made aware that her items were being taken to a warehouse to sit for a week and a half. We found this out later in the process. A couple weeks later they, whoever THEY are, say they will arrive the next day. The truck driver was absolutely horrid!!! He screamed at the Condo office representative about the gate. We were at the gate ready for him. He then decides he is unable to make the turn into the condo complex. Any real CDL licensed driver could have made it in. Instead he says "I need $700 right now before I unload". We don’t feel like we have a choice so we paid. They began to unload only to find that other household belongings are mixed in with my mother’s.

So began the very long process of discerning what boxes are hers. After 2 hours they had all Mom's stuff out on the sidewalk to be dollied a fairly long way to her condo. This is called a Long Haul. They had 2 upright dollies and no flatbad dollies. Going like this was going to be a very long job. The guys that were actually handling the items were pissed as hell and didn’t mind letting us know. One tried to shakedown my mom for more money, saying he would promise to finish the job if she made it worth his while. She declined. She had already been shaken down by the driver.

So, what happened is they dollied the large items and packed the boxes into my moms SUV. Many many trips were made doing this. All the while the driver is hounding me due to the fact that the bank was reviewing the transaction for the shakedown money. We had a screaming match about it. 6’2” big bellied man coming at me hard threatening to drive off. No qualms at all about yelling at 2 elderly women. He got his money unfortunately.

As the day progressed into night the guys doing the work decided they had had enough and without further ado, see ya later or any kind of communication, they walked off the job. Furniture was left out on the sidewalk. Public sidewalk. Heavy expensive items. Completely out in the elements and unsecured. My Mom and I had no idea what to do!! So, the furniture just sat outside all night. We had to hire another local crew to come help us the next day.

This isn’t just a bad review. This is a statement of a criminal enterprise. We were swindled by a huge corporation and then shaken down by a low life moving company driver from Old School Moving and Storage Corp. I plan to keep going and taking action through social media and tv media until this is made right

Also, so far in to our unpacking we have found 2 large boxes of stuff that isn’t ours. I feel sorry for those other unsuspecting clients. What to do? Idk? We will call these criminal movers about it, but I doubt anything will happen

I contacted Charter Van Lines last year November of 2024. Got my quote and ended up moving on February 1 of 2025. Horrible experience, first off the company they hired to move us from St Louis Mo was Midwest Moving Company which I didn’t know at the time that they were brokering our move from another company. They didn’t tell us that someone else besides Charter Van Lines was moving us and I should have checked myself. Anyway the movers showed up with a large moving truck like the size of a large U-Haul truck probably 20-26 foot. 2 people came and looked at our move and said it wouldn’t fit all our stuff and the guys were really rude and hateful and was very unprofessional movers. Anyway they told us they would only fill truck half full with our move. We were upset and had to be out of house.

Anyway I ask them what we need to do since they were not going to take all our stuff. They said they would fill truck full if we paid them cash outa pocket and we were in a bind so we paid them another 1700 dollars cash just to fill truck full which was totally wrong and we were in a bind so we did it because we didn’t have a choice. So they filled truck and still couldn’t get our stuff in that Penske truck. So they left with the 1700 cash bribe. Charter Van Lines did not send a big enough truck to start with. So we paid Charter Van Lines around 5400 plus pay these guys 1700 cash. Now we have a bunch more stuff that Charter van lines said we could fit in that truck that the movers would only fill half full and bribe us so they could get more money from us. So we had to rent a large U-Haul truck to load rest of stuff that was supposed to fit.

The U-Haul truck rental was 900 dollars plus gasoline for the trip from Georgia to Illinois so we had to spend over 8000 dollars plus fuel and hotel for the trip. Also the guys were Smoking pot before they came and was High on pot when they unloaded our stuff. I could smell it and they tore our leather couch moving it in new house. Overall a terrible experience and charter van lines never once followed up to see how move was. We ended up spending 4-5 thousand dollars more to move. I will be reporting this to BBB. The cash bribe or we won’t fill truck was totally wrong. Marty **

I was planning a move from Idaho to Illinois and got connected with Charter Van Lines after requesting a quote. Their rep, Jesse, repeatedly called me back after I had declined, pressuring me to “book immediately” or risk missing a truck. Under that pressure, I placed a $1,174.25 deposit on September 5, 2025. Within just a few hours, my job situation changed, and I called to cancel. Despite no services being rendered and cancellation occurring the same day, the company refused to refund my deposit, citing an internal “nonrefundable within seven days” policy. I called and emailed multiple times but received no response.

After filing a BBB complaint, Charter Van Lines claimed the FTC Cooling-Off Rule didn’t apply to phone transactions. However, federal and state laws — including FTC Act §5 (15 U.S.C. §45), FMCSA 49 CFR §371.113, Idaho Code §48-603, and Florida Statute §501.204 — prohibit coercive sales tactics and keeping money for services not performed (known as unjust enrichment). I eventually disputed the charge through my bank, but this company’s behavior shows why consumers should be cautious. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend Charter Van Lines and urge others to review their rights carefully before paying any deposit.

DO NOT BOOK WITH THIS COMPANY!!!! They will go over your inventory with you, knowing how much much stuff you have and tell you one price to get you to book with them and then when the movers get there it's way more expensive. Then when I called customer service to explain that half my items that were on the list would not fit, she told me I would have to pay more. Keep in mind all of these items were on the list to go on the truck. Then once they delivered my things and I started to unpack, I noticed my 80 inch tv screen was broken. Something stabbed it right through the box. They told me to file a claim. It's been 3 weeks now and I still have not heard anything. This company is horrible. You are better off renting a UHAUL and doing it yourself.

The sales team, dealt with Ryan, promise you the moon and stars. Once you’re under contract, they’ll stop taking your calls. They hire subpar local movers and when issues arise, they won’t speak to you. Hire a local mover on your own and research them. Else, you have no clue who’s moving you until they’re at your door and you’re stuck!

Charter Van Lines is an unethical company that engaged in misrepresentation, withheld information, and misled me. I paid a deposit for their services. I asked questions, and all of those questions got deferred to a "Quality Assurance" call that conveniently fell within the non-refundable window. During that call, I discovered that the previous agent had lied to me about critical information (I have the email threads and paper trail to verify this), and engineered circumstances to block me from getting a refund. This was one of the worst, frustrating, and unethical business experiences I have had. I highly discourage you from engaging in business with them. I ended up using FlatRate Miami for moving and I couldn't recommend them highly enough. FlatRate was professional, ethical, and transparent. Charter Van Lines deserves 0 stars.

My tenant moved in with me over a month ago, and their stuff was slated to arrive less than a week from pickup, timed to be when she arrived. It's been over a month of waiting, and her stuff hasn't left the original state! This company is incredibly rude and disrespectful, wasting her time and punting her around to numbers that don't pick up for a young woman moving solo across the US. They'll quote you a great price because they're lying about the quality of services they offer -- RUN as fast as you can from this company. You're being scammed and they will not try to help you at all.

Do not move with this company.

      1) The bill estimate did not match the total cost. We did add three items (two boxes, one shoe rack) day of but we also got rid of queen mattress, queen mattress frame, 40 in TV. The mover looked at the three items (eyeballed it) and said that it would add 50 cubic feet and upped our total charge instead of measuring the actual cubic feet once in the vehicle. The first movers also told us we needed to pay 60% now and 40% at delivery... it was 50% and 50% when I called customer support. He lied.
      2) They moved our personal items from the original moving truck into an 18-wheeler, then charged us $1 per square foot ($480) to move into a U-Haul truck that would fit in our apartment complex. I'm unaware of any apartment complex that could sustain an 18-wheeler.... We were also never told that it would be different companies throughout this moving process.
      3) When trying to get a hold of customer service, the representative kept repeating that "it is in the contract" and when I asked for her to guide me to the portion of the contract that states the items would be moved into an 18 wheeler, she referred me to where it says "May move into warehouse." Not helpful.

      4) Upon delivery, there was only one mover. My husband had to physically help move items so the gentleman was not breaking his back.

Overall, Don't use this company as it will be confusing and not helpful with stress during your move.
